RENSSELAER LIBRARY MONTHLY MEETING Friends of the Rensselaer Library will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 23rd, at 6:30 PM at the library on East St. They will be planning for the Saturday, June 25th, Summer Reading Program Kick-Off from 11 AM - 2 PM. This year’s theme is “One World Many Stories” a large variety of activities have been planned for children signing up for the program.

In 1910, the original 108 acres was purchased and established as Glenwood Fruit Farm by Fredrick and Jesse Lemka. In the early years it was a struggle to get the farm going so Fredrick and Jesse had to be resourceful. Fredrick began selling water to the residents of Albany from the farm’s natural spring using the slogan, “What Troy flushes, Albany drinks.” From those days of selling water and planting trees, the farm became larger and more successful, adding orchards of fruit trees, dairy cattle, an egg route and acquiring the first tractor with rubber tires in Renssealer County.

In 1951, Ray and Sue Lemka bought the farm and continued to look at farming with an innovative spirit. They understood that their business would need to change in order to keep the farm viable. In 1957 Ray went to a fruit show in Kingston and saw a man selling cider presses. Sue and Ray decided to invest in the apple cider endeavor. That decision opened up new markets and today the production of old fashioned, no preservative added cider, continues be a sought after product at Kristy’s Barn.

In 1961, Ray and Sue established their own farm market in order to reach more customers. It seemed, “meant to be” when Ray and Sue purchased The First United Methodist Church’s old building on Route 9 and 20 and opened Appleland Farms.

In 1994, Ken and Kristy Lemka Johnson bought the farm. They continued to run Appleland Farms until 2000 when they brought the store down to the farm so customers could see where their food was grown. In 2000, The Farm at Kristy’s Barn was opened.

Since then, the farm has continued to take many different directions in order to keep up with the times including; pasture raised chickens and turkeys, cider donuts, hayrides, petting paddock, school tours, a CSA, and farmers’ markets.

This year we are celebrating over 100 years of feeding families!

Each month we will be featuring a product that has played a large role in the history of our farm. 100 of each product will be given away on a first come, first serve basis.

Elliott brings more than 27 years of experience on the bench Judge Raymond Elliott, III announces his candidacy for the Third Judicial District of the Supreme Court of New York State. Judge Elliott spent 16 years working as a law clerk for Judges Warren Travers and George Ceresia Jr. before becoming a Justice in the Town of North Greenbush in 1984, a post he was elected to eight times and has held for 27 years.

“I am running because I believe that decades of hearing cases have given me the experience and temperament necessary to be an asset to the people of the Third Judicial District,” said Judge Elliott. “My experience in law, accumulated by serving on the bench for over 27 years, teaching law for 10 years and being in private practice for more than 39 years, has provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to serve the residents of the Third District.”

In addition to serving the Town of North Greenbush, Judge Elliott served as Acting Troy City Court Judge in both Civil and Criminal Court and Acting Judge for Rensselaer City Court and East Greenbush Town Court. In that time he presided over more than 40,000 cases, becoming a sought after member of the legal community offering insight and advice for many challenging aspects of New York State Law. After graduating from Columbia High School, Elliot graduated from Colgate University in 1969. He then attended Albany Law School earning a Juris Doctor Degree in 1972. Elliott was admitted to practice law before all Courts of the State of New York and the U.S. District Court of the Northern District in New York in 1973.

Elliott has taken on many leadership roles within the legal community serving as past President of the Association of Towns of the State of New York, past director of the Executive Committee of the NYS Magistrates Association and past President of the Rensselaer County Magistrates Association.

Elliott has been married to his wife, Barbara, for 39 years. The couple has two daughters and two granddaughters.

THE DR. JO MOCCIA DIGNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS AWARD The Dr. Jo Moccia Dignity for All Students Award has been established and will be given annually, beginning in June 2012, to that senior who has done the most during his/her time at Averill Park High School to promote the goals of the Dignity for All Students Act and to make our community a more peaceful and tolerant place.

Dr. Josephine “Jo” Moccia served the Averill Park community since 1987 when she began as District School Psychologist.

Throughout the years, she served as Director of Special Education, building Principal at George Washington School, Assistant Superintendent, and finally as Superintendent. Jo demonstrated unwavering devotion to the students of our community, particularly those with special needs.

The Board of Education for South Whidbey School District, Washington State, located on scenic Whidbey Island, recently conducted a nationwide search for a new superintendent. After a strenuous vetting process, Dr. Moccia was unanimously selected as their first choice. She will begin to serve there as Superintendent July 1, 2011.

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the May 10, 2011 legislative meeting.

With gas prices continuing to increase, we joined calls for the state to suspend state taxes on gasoline during three periods this summer. The three gas holidays would include the Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends. During the gas holidays, motorists could save 33 cents in taxes per gallon, and several dollars per fill-up. While state lawmakers did not act in time for a gas holiday during the Memorial Day weekend, we remain hopeful state taxes can be reduced at some point this summer to provide motorists with a much-needed break.

We are also proud Rensselaer County became one of the first counties in the country to adopt a new law protecting military funerals from protests. The law was drafted by the New York State Association of Counties following a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court determined that municipalities can enact reasonable restrictions on protesters. The county law, which is now in effect, requires that protesters be kept back 700 feet one hour before and one hour following the funeral.

We were honored to have a letter from the mother of Staff Sgt. Derek Farley read at the meeting in support of the law.

Derek was tragically killed while serving with the U.S. Army and attempting to dismantle an explosive device that had placed his fellow service members and civilians at risk.

Legislators have been worried about increasing expenses for special prosecutors in the county. At the May meeting, we did not approve nearly $100,000 for special prosecutors. The Legislature approved a resolution asking state lawmakers to enact reforms for special prosecutor’s fees, and to bring fees more in line with public defenders.

The Legislature also approved distribution to towns of revenues from the filing of mortgages in the county, including $242,620.09 for East Greenbush, $199,346.92 for North Greenbush and $65,218.25 for Poestenkill.

The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, June 14, 2011. RENSSELAER COUNTY REPUBLICANS ENDORSE 2011 SLATE OF CANDIDATES

The Rensselaer County Republican Committee unanimously endorsed a slate of candidates for the 2011 elections during a meeting in Troy, pledging to build on the party’s recent successes, County Chairman Neil J. Kelleher announced.

The county Republican Party endorsed Surrogate Court Judge Chris Hummel for re-election, Sheriff Jack Mahar for re-election and experienced prosecutor Joel Abelove for election as District Attorney.

Along with the nomination of county-wide candidates, Republicans also nominated a slate of candidates for election to positions in Troy, including mayoral candidate Carmella Mantello. Along with Carmella Mantello, the party also backed At-Large Council candidates Jim Gordon, Billie Jean Greene and Tom Killips, District 1 candidate Frank LaPosta, District 2 incumbent Mark McGrath, District 3 incumbent Dean Bodnar, District 4 candidate Debra Lockrow, District 5 incumbent Seamus Donnelly and District 6 incumbent Dan Mahoney.

The party also heard from State Supreme Court Third Judicial District hopefuls Guy Roemer, an Albany attorney, and Jon Nichols, who now serves as Columbia County Court Judge.

Kelleher said Republicans in Rensselaer County are motivated to work hard for the 2011 elections following the party’s strong showing in the 2010 elections. The county posted strong results in helping elect Congressman Chris Gibson and Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, along with helping re-elect State Senator Roy McDonald and winning several local races. In the 2009 elections, the county GOP re-elected County Executive Kathleen Jimino and County Clerk Frank Merola and retained a 13-member veto-proof majority on the County Legislature and won the majority of local elected offices.

“We are looking to build on the victories of 2010 and previous years and have a party that is united and ready to work hard for victory,” said Kelleher.

The Couse Corner Roundabout which we’ve been talking about for the past 10 years seems to be “almost” ready to go. We are still in conference with DOT. Please be advised as we will keep everyone informed about the process and schedule.

The Community Service and Youth Department have done a great job with their Easter program and Spotlight on Youth – a Congratulations for our recipients – Jared Stone, Nicholas Whitney, Lauren Stockli, Ciara Cristo, Catlin O’Neil and Katelyn Job. Thanks to Daniela Lanni and Anita Nero for a job well done!

We have met with the Rensselaer County Legislature, and we are close to an agreement with a Sewer Line By-Pass, which will help not only East Greenbush, but our surrounding neighbors.

Our Solar Project has had all the paperwork signed and are looking forward to “going green” in the near future.

We have concluded our contract with Rensselaer for our water partnership. We are now in the process of finalizing a long term water deal with the city of Troy.

The East Greenbush Community Library has one open position for a five-year term on their Board of Trustees to be voted on September 8, 2011. East Greenbush registered voters who wish to be considered as a candidate for election to the Board of Trustees, can stop in the library to pick up a trustee packet.

The packets will be available at either the circulation desk or the reference librarian desk. Trustee candidates must live within the boundaries of East Greenbush and need 25 signatures from voters in East Greenbush before their name will be placed on the ballot. The deadline for returning nominating petitions and signatures to the director is August 9 at 5:00 pm. Any persons interested or considering running for trustee of the board are encouraged to attend the public hearing on July 19 to discuss the upcoming budget or attend the next monthly board meeting on Tuesday, June 21st.

A black bear has been roaming the area around Crystal Lake (including Mt. View Rd. and Wisner Rd.) in search of bird feeders. The bear is the size of a large black lab, and has been seen raiding backyard bird feeders of several homeowners during the last two weeks.

The Town Board recently held another public hearing on the updated Comprehensive Plan and related GEIS. The written comment period on both documents continues until June 20.

These documents are available at Town Hall, the Library and online.

In May, I provided the community with an update on efforts to explore shared municipal services. A copy of that report and others is available on Nassau’s website. To get there, go to www.townofnassau.org and click on “officials” and then “supervisor”.

The USEPA evaluation work continues at the Loeffel Toxic Site.

The annual fish sampling has begun in the area as well. This is all part of ongoing remediation and evaluation efforts.

The Town has submitted a grant application for $600,000 for the Burden Lake Sewer District. The discovery of a great deal of rock in the path of the sewer has increased the project cost to approximately $3.5 million. We continue to work on engineering, shared services and community partnerships to reduce the cost of construction.

The Youth Committee has announced a Game Night on June 28 at the Nassau VFW. Additionally, they will be hosting another Family Fun Day on August 27. Please check our website for details. Youth Camp is just around the corner. Please be sure to register your child as soon as you are able. Applications are online or at Town Hall.

There will be a job fair at Town Hall on June 16 and June 30 for positions available at the CEO Center just over the border in Schodack.

We extend our special thanks to Diane Maguire, the Historic Preservation Committee and other volunteers for their ongoing work restoring all the Town’s historic markers and the North Nassau Cemetery. They are doing a great job.

The Board has approved $8,000 for summer dust control on our roads and has accepted an application for an Institutional Use Permit for China Hill Road. This application has been referred to the Planning Board for review and will be the subject of upcoming public hearings.

As you know, there is a great deal of progress in the community.

ERRORS IN LETTER REGARDING OWNERSHIP OF GLASS LAKE DAM & DIKE Letter to the Editor: Mr. Ron Berti, a past member of the NY Stock Exchange, but with no ownership interest in Glass lake frontage, is challenging the ownership of the Glass Lake dam and dike and has again sent a letter to the editor with substantial errors.

First, in the vote to limit access and damage at the dam, no owner cast more than one vote for any property owned and many submitted proxies for owners unable to attend.

Second, while there was a letter from the town attorney, that attorney was unable to substantiate ownership rights in a court of law in spite of being given extra time by GLPC and extra time by the court.

Third, in spite of references to 50 deeds, the Glass Lake Preservation Corporation hold one deed, recorded in Troy, with description of the area in question as belonging to the GLPC. You can look it up in book 110 on page 192. It says the GLPC property goes to the edge of the road, as it would have been at the time. The road is not a three-rod, or 50 foot turnpike, but a simple “right of way” owned by the adjacent property owners. Although, CP Momrow, surveyor, noted a plot with the term “3 rod r.o.w. claimed by the town”, no interest party has been able to substantiate that as a fact.

The GLPC, as owner, was required by the DEC to make repairs to the dam and dike to protect those people and properties downstream of the dam, not the lakefront owners. The town did not claim ownership while the work was being done.

St. Jude’s Knights of Columbus has been busy. Recently, we have conducted our Spring litter patrol to clean up Whiteview Rd. from the car wash to HVCC. We also recently paid for $600 of repairs to the convection ovens so they can continue to support the breakfasts, school lunches, and other parish events. We regularly support Joseph’s House, and last month collected two large boxes of items to support out local vets visiting the Albany VA Hospital. All men are invited to become a Knight. SAND LAKE/BUTLER PARK SUMMER RUNS The 2011 Sand Lake/Butler Park Summer series has started its 20th season! This year, as in the past, the runs will be held on eight Thursdays, finishing at the end of July. The Kids Runs (800M, 400 M, and Mile) start at 6 PM, with the road races (2.5 mile or 5.0 mile) starting at 6:30 PM. All of the Kids Runs will be held within Butler Park, and on the grass fields.

The longer Kids Runs will incorporate the woods just behind the fields on nice dirt trails. The Road races will continue to be held on the roads, incorporating RT 43, Old Route 66 and Gettle Road. HOW WELL HAVE AVERILL PARK’S EDUCATORS MANAGED OUR TAX DOLLARS Property value per student in Averill Park (AP) is far below the average for the 38 other school districts in the Capital Region (CR). While state aid helps to reduce the school funding problem this causes, State fiscal and political realities ensure that a large funding problem remains after state aid is distributed.

The remaining funding deficit challenges educators in AP to provide the high quality education each child deserves regardless of family or district wealth, but at a lower cost than in other districts. The Fiscal Accountability Supplement and Fiscal Profile of the School Report Card issued by the NYS Education Department (SED) provides data that can help us assess how well AP educators have met that challenge: • For the latest year available (2008-2009), AP’s total expenditure per student (EPS) was $15,552. In contrast, the average EPS for NYS districts considered comparable to AP in SED’s analysis of district expenditures was $17,708.

• AP’s EPS was also well below the $17,240 average EPS for the 24 districts in the Capital Region considered comparable to AP in SED’s expenditure analysis.

• AP’s EPS is lower than all but one of the 11 districts in the CR that have both a similar property value and a similar income per student as AP. Like educators in AP, educators in such districts need to keep their EPS down in order to reduce the tax burden on district residents.

• AP’s tax rate of $15.50 for 2008-2009 is far below the average of $18.84 for the 11 districts noted above that face a similar school funding challenge as AP. In fact, only one of the 11 districts had a lower tax rate than AP. The above data strongly suggest that AP’s educators and supporting board members have managed our tax dollars very well.

To successfully address the even greater school funding problem we will face next year, the AP community will need more facts and less unsupported speculation and rumor. In worship on Sunday, June 19, 2011, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will engage in an understanding of the “Great Commission” in which Jesus promises both his presence and also makes a command to “go!” and make disciples of all nations. It is here in Matthew 28:16-20 and in the Gospels that we find Jesus is on the move, always; our triune God is our God in motion. Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen, in the sermon titled, “The Trinity, God in Motion” will point to how we, as the church, must willingly keep on the move.

The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and route 9J, approximately one half mile South of the only traffic light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Young folk remain in worship through the children’s sermon and then take up self study activities related to the sermon. Following worship, the church at Stuyvesant will celebrate Father’s day by paying tribute to all Dads and to all those who have worked in the name of Fathers with a fellowship hour featuring baked goods favored by the ladies in the church.

The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building at 43 Church Street, one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village on Route 20. Sunday School has adjourned until September.

The congregation will pay tribute to Dads during worship. Young folk are encouraged to attend church with their families.

SAND LAKE GARDEN CLUB HAS SUCCESSFUL PLANT SALE The recent plant sale sponsored by the Sand Lake Garden Club was a huge success and was due to the work and cooperation of many in the community. The club would like to thank so many people that helped make the sale a success. Thanks to Tremont Lumber for supplying our tent, to Robert Warland Builders for setting up the tables, to Dawn Pawlson of Out of the Ordinary Nursery for supplying pots and one of the raffle prizes. Many thanks also to Donna Foster for donating some of her lovely pottery. Of course, we could not have the sale without the generosity of the Salem United Methodist Church which allows the club the use of its property and tables for this event. Kudos to members of Girl Scout Troop 1530, Taylor, Hannah, and Rebecca, for helping buyers load their cars with purchases. Congratulations to the members of the club for all of their hard work in organizing and holding this event. Winners of the raffle items included Phyllis Scheeren, Tiffany Kimmey, Tim Van Sleet, and Aimee Falk. Proceeds from the sale are used for two scholarships awarded to Averill Park seniors who will be studying horticulture or related subjects in college upon graduation. Community plantings are also augmented through this sale. POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL JUNE CONCERT-ON-THE-GREEN Poestenkill Historical Society’s Annual CONCERT-ON-THE-GREEN will be held on Tuesday, June 28th, 6:45 to 8:15 PM on the Poestenkill’s Town Green [Library Lawn]. This year we have a duo known as “Lost Radio Rounders”. They were formerly known as the “Gospel Train”. Tom and Michael have been playing Historic American music together for over 25 years. Their Concert-On-The-Green this year will be “American Favorite Ballads Songs From Folkways”. These would include Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and many more. They performed for us in June of 2008. Because of rain we moved inside to standing room only. April 30th was the tenth year of this exciting event and another successful fundraiser for the Library. It was also the celebration that marked ten years that the Library has been happily settled in its new home on Plank Road.

Library Director Margie Morris says participation is the key to success. She cites the scores of volunteers, especially the young helpers who livened up the scene with fun activities, and lightened the load by moving thousands of books.

LOCAL CADET GRADUATES FROM WEST POINT Cadet Thomas Joseph Witkowski, son of Thomas and Deborah Witkowski of Troy, NY, graduated from the United States Military Academy on Saturday, May 21.

Witkowski was a 2006 graduate of La Salle Institute. While at West Point, he majored in American Legal Studies (Pre-law) with honors, and received awards for the Academy’s highest course average in American Politics (Homeland Security) and Systems Engineering (Applied Systems Design and Decision Making).

As part of the graduation ceremony, Witkowski was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army within the Military Intelligence branch. He will report to Fort Stewart, GA for his first assignment.

8:30-11am) KRISTINE GRECO FUNDRAISER This is my 19 year old sister Kristine.

In 2009, she was diagnosed with a form of childhood brain cancer called Anaplastic Medulloblastoma.

Approximately 350 children in the United States are diagnosed each year with this awful disease.

Kristine fought hard against this very aggressive cancer. Kristine underwent extensive brain surgery and a course of grueling treatments including chemotherapy and radiation.

Following a yearlong battle, Kristine graduated high school (with honors) and was on the path to a bright future. Recently, after being cancer free for about a year, a follow up MRI showed three large tumors in Kristine’s brain.

Kristine was given a poor prognosis and little hope. Kristine and my family refuse to give up or lose hope. There are various treatment options available. On Saturday, June 18th, Team Kristine will be holding a benefit celebrating life and honoring this young woman who continues to fight every day. The benefit is being held at Lyon’s Lake from 1pm - 6pm and will be a day filled with fun for the entire family. Please come and show your support! JACQUELINE ROSS GRADUATES FROM WELLS COLLEGE Jacqueline Ross of Rensselaer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ross, received a bachelor’s degree from Wells College. Jacqueline majored in Biological and Chemical Sciences with a concentration in Chemistry and minored in Science, Health, and Values.

She was included in the 201011 edition of Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

The golden anniversary of holding our Strawberry Festival will be held on Thursday, June 16th, at 7PM at 42 Church Street (RT 20) Nassau. This event is sponsored by Grace United Methodist church and features entertainment by the Nassau-East Greenbush Community Band.
