AUDITIONS FOR THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT AT SLCA Auditions for a staged reading of The Triangle Factory Fire Project will be held on Mon. June 27, from 7 - 10pm at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts.

This September is the 100th anniversary of this tragic fire that occurred in NYC in 1911. Needed for cast: 5 to 13 men and 4 to 12 women: Will cast up to four roles per person, of varied ages (17-60’s). Ideally, 18 people playing 33 roles.

This is not a formal audition, but there will be readings from the script. Needed as well are lighting person, producer, stage manager/props, assistant director, sound, costumes (very basic), set decorator (very basic): production roles can be doubled, except for lighting and sound. Students with experience are welcome.

Proven Record of Low Taxes and Open Government Citing a proven record of cutting taxes, improving services and providing a transparent and open government for Brunswick residents, Supervisor Phil Herrington announced his plans to seek re-election this November.

“During the past four years, we have worked hard to keep taxes down while not only providing the same services, but in many cases better and more efficient services,” said Herrington.

“Just as many of our residents have tightened their budgets during this economic downturn, so too has the town. Over the past four years, my administration has worked tirelessly to identify cost-cutting measures while still providing top-notch services.”

In recent years, the town has improved its bond rating from BAA to A2, a sign of Brunswick’s increasing fiscal health. In addition, capital investments have saved taxpayer dollars, such as the purchase of a paver currently operated by town employees who pave roads at a significantly reduced cost compared to outside paving companies.

“My administration has worked aggressively to secure grant money to offset the tax burden,” added Herrington. “Grants helped provide solar panels for Town Hall, construct a new bridge and purchase new equipment.”

The Town received a $30,000 grant to provide a power study, which helped lead to a $187,000 grant to purchase solar panels for Town Hall. Once installed, the solar panels will cut the Town’s energy bill by 20% annually. The Town also secured a federal grant for $1.5 million to install a new bridge on White Church Road.

The Herrington Administration has both literally and figuratively opened the doors to government. Town Hall opened in 2005 and measures such as a new personnel employee handbook and an updated comprehensive plan opened the governmental process to residents.

As Brunswick Town Supervisor, Herrington has put forward 11 budgets without raising taxes. “I am proud of my record and I want to continue my fiscally conservative efforts for the residents of Brunswick as we continue to provide new services, like the Farmer’s Market, while keeping taxes low.”

CIRCLES OF MERCY ANNOUNCES TWO SUMMER TRAINING CLASSES There will be several exciting training opportunities happening here at Circles of Mercy this summer and we hope local residents will take time to participate in them.

WEST SAND LAKE FIRE DISTRICT PUBLIC FORUM ON PROPOSED FIRE STATION The West Sand Lake Fire District will hold the fourth of six Public Forums on Thursday, 30 June, at 7:00 pm, at the Fire Station located at 3697 Route 43. The topic of discussion will be the proposed new Fire Station.

Representatives from the Fire Department, Hueber-Breuer Construction Company’s Division of Fire Protection Services, and Pacheco Ross Architects will be on hand to discuss preliminary designs as well as to listen to community input. All residents of the West Sand Lake Fire District are encouraged to attend.

Following a six month long Feasibility Study recently completed by the Fire Department and its consultants, deficiencies and safety concerns were identified. Historical data and ongoing community trends were analyzed.

The Committee studied 6 – 8 Options, culminating in a decision that best meets the needs of the Community and the Fire Fighters. The Fire District has been experiencing a variety of building issues related to their existing 40 + year old structure which include tight egress for the large apparatus, safety concerns related to OSHA regulations and NFPA standards, as well as the inability to expand into programs such as volunteer bunk in which would greatly improve response times.

Two additional Public Forums are scheduled for July 21 and August 11 after which a Public Referendum will be held.

TVHS STUDENTS RAISE MORE THAN $2,000 FOR CAMBODIAN GIRL The 40 Tech Valley High School students who fasted for 30 hours Friday and Saturday raised more than $2,000 for the Cambodian girl they adopted.

“Everyone who took part now has a deeper understanding of why we sponsor Davy through the different activities we did, the movies we watched, and the fasting,” said Annmarie Pryor, one of the student organizers.

A third of the 120-person student body took part in the fast, which started Friday at 12:30 p.m. and lasted into Saturday evening. The students collected $2,041 in pledges for the fast.

The event was organized by the Tech Valley High School Key Club, which adopted the girl, Davy Seab, last year with the promise of raising funds to pay for her yearly education and medical expenses. They met and exceeded those goals last year, raising enough funds to purchase a goat for her family.

“At the end of the fast, we wrote letters to her so they could get to her in time for her 13th birthday on August 5. We also made a poster; on top was written ‘I fasted because...’ and each person wrote a little reason why they fasted,” she said.

Principal Dan Liebert said, “I could not be more proud of these students and what they have done.”

Club Advisor Teacher Jen Hower said she is “very proud of the students’ efforts to raise awareness about the global problem of hunger and poverty.”

QUESTAR III HONORS REC STUDENTS AT AWARDS CEREMONY Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center in Troy honored students at the school’s annual Awards Night on June 1 at Rensselaer High School. Dozens of students received scholarships, plaques or certificates in recognition of their efforts in career and technical education (CTE), career studies, alternative education and New Visions programs over the past year.

Questar III District Superintendent Dr. James N. Baldwin, who provided opening remarks at the ceremony, recognized the academic, leadership and service efforts of students. He also praised Questar III faculty and staff for striving to meet the needs of students, noting that the ceremony represented the culmination of their work together. “They have worked diligently and dedicated their lives to help our students become what they’re capable of and to realize their dreams.”

Baldwin also pointed to the developments in the Tech Valley region and the potential it held for the future. “Questar III’s challenge is to make sure our students can take advantage of all the opportunities Tech Valley has to offer.”

Nine students received scholarships from Rensselaer Educational Center. CRAWMER IS WRONG Letter to the Editor: Mr. Crawmer is wrong, because anyone who castigates an entire group of people based on a label (Liberals) is wrong. Not all Liberals think the same way as is also true of many Conservatives. I am a lifelong Democrat who does not agree with every position taken by Democrats as well as agreeing with some positions taken by Conservatives.

I often agree with David Brooks, David Fhrum, the late William Buckley, and other sensible thinkers. To equate them with Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck would make no sense, but that is how Mr. Crawmer operates. If I criticize a Conservative person or position, I would be careful to describe the position and my objections.

He makes snarky remarks and outrageous claims without a shred of reliable evidence. He alludes to but does not cite support for the notion that Liberal leaders target young people because young people are not aware of the prior failures of liberal thought. Conservatives also reach out to young people to support their positions, but according to Mr. Crawmer, Conservatives “inform” whereas Liberals “indoctrinate”.

He seems to beleive that “Liberals” are lying to cover up their “true” agenda...which is not described but is apparently some sort of unpatriotic, unamerican objective. I agree that a number of so-called liberal solutions to problems have been faulty and (like many) are subject to The Law of Unintended Consequences. But that law has applied to many so-called conservative solutions as well. There have been many conservative positions that are subject to the (presumed) definition of insanity by Albert Einstein to the effect that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. (Lsaffer Curve anyone?) Although this type of behavior is dysfunctional, it does not fit commonly used definitions of insanity. Einstein, although a genius, was a genius in Physics, not Psychology.

My request of Mr. Crawmer, and actually of the Advertiser editorial policy is... Keep it Clean!! I responded to a mere pittance of the content of Mr. Sturn’s first letter, and he felt the need to write another to clarify what I had “misconstrued”. He said I “…insulted the intelligence and vilified the political values of anyone with whom he happens to disagree”. I thought I was perfectly clear that I was insulting the intelligence and vilifying the political values (he forgot to mention sanity) of LIBERALS. I appreciate the opportunity to restate that.

Then there’s his stated inability to understand my comments on job creation and business regulation. He demeaned the importance of intelligence when seeking a job. That prompted me to suggest that intelligent people should create jobs instead of seeking one. Mr. Sturn, are you aware of all the talk about jobs that Obama is trying to create (and failing because that’s not his job)? Do you think rewarding the unemployed with extended benefits would create more unemployment or less?

Have you ever been an employer or are you viewing our economy through the “narrow lens” of someone who’s been an employee or government employee his whole life? I have been all three, but prefer being the employer that I have been for the last fifteen years. Although, with the massive regulatory burden being imposed on me as such, a burden most employees (and apparently you) aren’t even aware of, it is getting increasingly difficult to create jobs. Lastly, there’s his comment about my letters being “self-serving”. Liberals often project their own intentions when they try to impugn the motives of people with whom they disagree by describing them as politically motivated or self-serving. They’re so predictable and transparent that I have often verified a detractor’s likely motivation by going to www.seethroughny.org and typing in their name to verify their public sector employment. You sometimes find their whole family is employed by or retired from the State. NAZARETH COLLEGE ANNOUNCES SPRING 2011 DEAN’S LIST Nazareth College is proud to announce the following students have earned dean’s list honors for the Spring 2011 semester: Kara Snyder of Averill Park, is a junior studying History; Kaitlynn Oles of Castleton on Hudson, is a senior studying Communication Sciences and Disorders; Molly Higgins of East Greenbush, is a junior studying Health Sciences; Regina Memole of Rensselaer, is a senior studying Music Education.

A student’s grade point average must be at least 3.5 or above, and they must complete 12 credit hours of graded work that semester in order to be included on the dean’s list at Nazareth.

SUBJECT OF E.G. TOWN STIPENDS REINTRODUCED BY SUP. McCABE Letter to the Editor: For some unknown reason, Supervisor McCabe has reintroduced the subject of stipends paid at his discretion in his report on the East Greenbush Town website.

The statement makes misleading misstatements of facts which must be addressed. He states the following (in part): The topic has been addressed numerous times, this will be the final statement on the issue of “stipends.”.” The decades long practice of giving extra pay for extra work, which has been beneficial to the town and the fact we did not have to hire extra staff, is no longer in effect. The town ended this practice in 2008 after the state comptrollers’ office said they don’t recommend them. There was no great discovery, no aha moment of handing out monies. The monies were in each budget for the past 30 years voted on by the sitting board. There has been no pension padding or secret bank accounts.

These are the facts — the stipends were ended with the budget for 2010. $43,800 was distributed in 2009. Mr. McCabe gave himself $5,000 in 2009 and $5,000 in 2008. And another elected official received $6,000 in 2008 and $6,000 in 2009.

In all cases, stipend amounts were added to bi-weekly pay at the beginning of each year without the local law or Board resolutions required by Sec. 27 of NYS Town Law. Those additions drove additional pension credits for those recipients in the pension system. The Board is the only entity which can award extra pay for extra work. The Board is even supposed to approve overtime on a regular basis. The total disbursement of stipends for 2006 through 2009 was $145,598, and this does not include the additional cost to the taxpayer which will accumulate in payable pensions until pension recipients and/or beneficiaries die.

Far from not recommending stipends, the State Comptroller sent a package of six Opinions of OSC which demonstrate that the stipends as distributed by the Supervisor were not lawful.

I’ve always wanted to know more about what life was like in the 1800’s in North Greenbush. Recently I obtained a work record book which had belonged to Garret Van Valkenburg, 1822-1896, who wrote a day- by- day record of his “doings” from 1856 until 1872.

The Van Valkenburgs were early Dutch settlers in New York.

Garret’s father Tunis came from Columbia County to Greenbush in 1816 and they lived, as far as I can tell where the shopping center across from Hudson Valley Community College is now located.

Garret was a farmer but also a “jack of all trades” as one needed to be in the 19th century. He was a carpenter, building various things in his shop. Mostly he farmed: haying, planting, plowing and harvesting various vegetables and other crops.

He spends what seems like an inordinate time slaughtering pigs.

He worked at a factory in Troy, which may have been the Burden Iron Works.

Although he owned his own farm, he spent many days working for neighbors and relatives. His wife was a Van den Burgh so there are many entries where he works at one of their family farms. Additionally, he worked for other prominent North Greenbush families including the Bloomingdales, the Defreests and the Phillips’.

He was a school teacher in 1864 and 1865 during the months of December through March (when there wasn’t farming to do).

He worked six days a week and was “at home” on Sundays-no mention of going to Church.

For pleasure, Garret hunted in the Adirondacks and in eastern Rensselaer County. He did some traveling. Garret met friends in Ohio, took a trip to Washington, D.C. and took in Mt. Vernon.

In addition to listing his daily activities, he mentions deaths of local inhabitants and attending their funerals. One interesting entry is from Sunday, April 15, 1865: “A. Lincoln died caused by shot in head.” Eleven days later he writes: “At Albany to see dead President Lincoln’s funeral train.”

Van Valkenburg was seldom sick during the 16 years he kept the record book. One reason for his good health may be inferred from the wonderful entry on the last page-instructions for making strong beer! Perhaps I should print the recipe in a future article.

HESSE GRADUATES MAGNA CUM LAUDE from ITHACA Lauren Hesse graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ithaca College on May 22, during the school’s 116th Commencement. Hesse was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Writing, with concentrations in Professional Writing and Non Fiction and a Minor in Integrated Marketing & Communications. She is a 2007 graduate of Maple Hill High School and is the daughter of Beth Nichols and Bob Hesse of Castleton. Hesse has been hired as Social Media Coordinator at St. Martin’s Press in New York.

RENSSELAER PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM The Rensselaer Public Library is gearing up for the 2011 summer reading program. This year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories”. Young readers ages 5 through 12 will be able to “register” to read either on the computer or with the library staff. Once registered, they will receive a reader’s kit to help them “kick-off” their summer reading. Individual prizes will be awarded for reporting reading and there will be several group raffles during the summer too!

The Rensselaer Public Library’s “kick-off” to summer reading will be held on Saturday, June 25th, from 10AM until 3PM. Registration will take place all day. From 11AM to 2PM, there will be special events, such as face painting, a clown, craft activities, balloon twisting and more!

In keeping with the global theme, the craft activities and snack foods will be representative of different cultures, countries and regions around the world.

There will also be an “All-American Hot Dog Roast” at noon!

The summer reading program-planning committee has been meeting every two weeks in preparation for the “kick-off” global fair on June 25th. They would welcome any new volunteers to help with organizing, planning, cooking, baking, crafting, etc.

Ryan will be starring as whimsical Sister Amnesia in Spotlight Theater’s July production of “Nunsense Amen”. Ryan most recently played the role of Orlando in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”. In 2009, Ryan was awarded a TANYS Award for Excellent Achievement in Performance for his portrayal of Carmen Ghia in The Producers, also a Spotlight production. A native of Scotia, Ryan will be studying Acting at SUNY Fredonia in the fall.

GRAFTON LIBRARY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP The book discussion group of the Grafton Community Library will be discussing What is the What by David Eggers at their June 29th meeting. The group meets at 12:30 PM at the library and is open to everyone.

This epic novel is a fictional recount of Valentino Archak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Suda; who at the age of 7, began his trek across deserts of three countries pursued by militia, wild animals and government bombers. When he eventually settled in the United States, he finds promise, heartache and new challenges. Moving, suspenseful and unexpectedly funny, the intimate novel both describes and is a sweeping journey recounting the nightmarish world of Sudanese civil war. The book was a finalist for the National Book Critics award for fiction in 2006.

David Eggers has written a number of fictional books as well as memoir and nonfiction. He is editor of the Best American Nonrequired Reading Journal with the help of high school students and is a champion of righting injustices and promoting writing through his 826 Valencia writing and tutoring labs for young people throughout America.

It’s time TO PLAN It’s time TO PLAN for the first annual Town Wide Garage Sale sponsored by the Sand Lake Business Association.

The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 17th and 18th, beginning at 8 a.m. The event will close with an auction at 2:30 on Sunday. Proceeds will be going to Sand Lake charities.

Garage sale participants will determine the ending time of their sale. Cost is $10 and proceeds benefit the SLBA and will be used in support of Sand Lake Charities.

L.A. INS. AGENCY TO HOLD CHILD IDENTIFICATION AND SAFETY CLINIC L.A. Insurance Agency, Inc., 2881 NY 43 in Sand Lake, will be having a child identification and safety clinic that will be held on Saturday June 25, 2011, from 11-2pm at the Sand Lake Library. The clinic is in conjunction with the Sand Lake Library Day and will have an appearance of Snoopy, everyone’s favorite beagle, to greet children. During the clinic, parents/ guardians will have the opportunity to discuss child safety with officers from the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s.

During the clinic, parents can obtain a 12-page booklet called “All About Me” that, among other things, contains critical safety topics that every child should know and a detailed three-page questionnaire that corresponds to a national missing children database used by police departments across the country. This clinic is a great opportunity for parents/guardians to have their children’s fingerprints recorded, which experts indicate can prove to be an important proactive measure that can greatly help law enforcement in its ability to respond swiftly to a reported abduction. Parents/guardians will also learn how to develop scent articles and DNA samples. In the mid 30s, entrance to the building faced Route 43. The front half was the U.S. Post Office.

In the back, a well-stocked dry goods store was operated by Elsie, Edith and Jake Werger. The Post Office relocated, and in 1943, Ben Silberg operated his Drug Store in the front. Clare remembers Mr. Silberg having a contest for young people to sell items assigned a number of points. Clare tried for a bike, but did earn a Brownie camera.

After Silberg’s Drug store moved to Main Street and became Park Pharmacy, John and Elva Shaut utilized the entire building as a variety store. It had a marble ice cream fountain and four high-backed wooden booths, all sorts of gift items, groceries, meat, beer, soda, bread and bakery. Clare worked there from 1946-48. The family lived in the huge room upstairs. In 1948, Ray & Vera Eastman purchased it. They moved the entrance to the side. Ice cream fountain and booths were removed for day-to-day items: table oilcloth, window shades, clothing, school supplies, magazines and meat. Eastman’s sold out in 1984.

There were several owners and a time of vacancy until Bob and Renee Phaneuf bought it in 2006 and completely restored it to the handsome mercantile building it was. Especially noteworthy repairs are the slate roof, scalloped cedar siding shingles, reopening boarded up windows, modern doors replaced by an oak set, concrete floor in basement, sanding the hardwood floors and redesigning the kitchen area. It opened as Island Bob’s General Store. In 2007, Miller and Stephanie Young became its owner and designed it to have the décor of an old-time hometown pharmacy. As Young’s Pharmacy and General Store it has a delicatessen, organic foods, homemade specialties and an assorted bakery selection to compliment the pharmacy services which include free local home-delivery.

Bridget was a member of the Honors program and majored in Writing with minors in Spanish and Art. She studied abroad in Spain in a language intensive program during her junior year.

Last summer, Bridget interned at Simon and Schuster, a major publishing house in New York City. Bridget will be entering the Masters of Fine Arts Creative Writing program at Hunter College in New York City in the fall, one of the highest ranked MFA writing programs. She received a Hertzog Fellowship and will be working as a research assistant to a published author while pursuing her degree. Bridget attended Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush and was the valedictorian of Catholic Central High School class of 2007.

Robert Lovelett of East Greenbush, New York has graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lafayette College Division of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Rob was one of a select group of students who completed the Honors Thesis program and received special tribute at a ceremony for Honors Thesis students. Rob was also selected for membership in Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.

Rob completed an internship at the Pacific Northwest National Lab during the summer of 2010. His resulting research paper was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for publication in their Journal of Undergraduate Research. Rob’s thesis paper, concerning a new way to measure the state of charge of lithium iron-phosphate batteries, was recognized by the American Chemical Society and he was invited to attend their 15th Annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference in Washington D.C. Rob will begin study towards a doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering later this summer as a fully funded student at the University of Delaware.

Strawberry shortcake will star at the Thirtieth Annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 26, under the tent at The Berry Patch on Route 22 in Stephentown, New York. The feast, a fund-raiser for the Stephentown Historical Society, runs from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Locally grown, freshly picked strawberries will be served on shortcake with real whipped cream and your choice of home-baked biscuits or golden yellow cake, or on ice cream sundaes. Pies, both whole and by the slice, will also be sold. You can also purchase jams, jellies, and strawberries to take home. The Berry Patch is 1.7 miles south of the Stephentown traffic light. The Stephentown Strawberry Festival began in 1982 when the historical society was in its infancy and was preparing for the town’s bicentennial celebration in 1984. SLCA PRESENTS BATIK WORKSHOP Sundays at the Center Batik Workshop with Pat Smart on July 3 at 1:30pm. $5pp. Batik is an ancient Indonesian method of decorating fabrics using hot wax as a resist for successive dye baths. Pat will explain the traditional method for Batik and give a brief history. She will demonstrate the wax and dye process.

Participants can then try their hands at waxing and put their fabric in an already prepared dye bath. While the fabric is drying (about 30 minutes) Pat will talk about and demonstrate dye painting and answer any questions. The fabrics will then be rinsed and wrapped in plastic for taking home. At home, participants will lay it out to dry and iron out the wax with absorbent paper. (Adults and children 6 and up if accompanied by an Adult, otherwise 12 and up). Limit 16 persons. The Town of Poestenkill presently does not own any land which is dedicated as park land. The Poestenkill Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2006 suggests that a public park or other public gathering place be developed within or in proximity to the hamlet.

CSEA HONORS TVHS SENIOR Tech Valley High Senior Joshua McDonald is the recipient of CSEA scholarship.

McDonald of Troy received the union’s Community Service Award for his volunteer work at the Unity House of Troy.

He received a $1,000 scholarship award during Tech Valley High’s awards ceremony on Thursday.

McDonald is a member of TVHS’s inaugural graduating class and walked across the stage to receive his diploma on June 18th on the University at Albany’s main campus in Albany.

He plans to attend Siena College in the fall where he will study computer sciences.

N.E.N.Y. P.G.A. AWARD TO RON CHOQUETTE The Northeastern N.Y. section of the P.G.A. of America, at its spring meeting, recognized Ron Choquette, Director of golf at Burden Lake C. C., as “Junior Golf Leader of the Year”.

The award “For outstanding contributions in the promotion and development in junior golf, and for reflecting the ideals of those who work with youth, was Ron’s fourth. Ron also received the President’s plaque in 2007.

Choquette has conducted a junior golf clinic at BLCC for the past 27 years, involving more than one hundred boys and girls each summer.

Burden Lake C. C., now owned by Tom Choquette, Ron’s son, permits the Averill Park H.S. Varsity and J.V. golf teams to hold try-outs, practices and home golf matches, free of charge, at the course.

This past season, AP’s Jimmy Sullivan qualified for the N.Y. State High School Championship at Cornell Univ.

New York Army National Guard Soldier Saluted During Military Appreciation Day New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Donald Leinfelder, a Wynantskill resident, was one of three New York Army National Guard Soldiers honored by the New York Mets during the team’s home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Memorial Day. The three Soldiers were honored during the Seventh Inning Stretch along with a member of the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy as part of the Mets and USO’s Military Appreciation Day at Citi Field. The five were recognized for their courage and bravery in combat.

Leinfelder, a member of Headquarters Company of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, headquartered in Latham, was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received while fighting with the 1st Battalion 69th Infantry in Baghdad in 2005.

Leinfelder, serving as a gunner in a humvee, was knocked to the floor when a rocket propelled grenade hit the hatch of his gunner’s turret. He got back up and re-engaged the enemy.

More than 1,400 service members attended the game. The event also featured performances by the USO Liberty Bells and the 35-member United States Marine Corp Band playing on Mets Plaza in front of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda to greet fans as they enter the ballpark.

A joint enlistment ceremony was also held on the field for 16 new members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, and three families of solders currently serving overseas spoke with their loved ones via satellite on the stadium broadcast system.

The event featured a symbolic first pitch thrown out over a satellite TV linkup from Afghanistan by Command Sergeant Major Drew E. Pumarejo of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division to Major General Richard Mills of the Marine Corps in the stadium.

The other two National Guard Soldiers recognized were Sergeant Timothy Gould and Specialist Ismail Diaz, both of New York City. Gould was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster because of injuries sustained in combat in Afghanistan. Diaz was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with a V for valor for his actions in leading Afghan National Army troops in a counterattack against attacking forces.

(518) 506-1500 DFD ALARM TOTAL REACHES 148 THROUGH MAY Volunteers of the DeFreestville Fire Department have answered 148 emergency alarms, and spent more than 1,117 fire fighter hours at emergencies, during the first five months of 2011, according to the report for Fire Chief Raymond Swart.

The alarms in May included six rescue or motor vehicle accident calls, four emergency medical service responses in cooperation with the North Greenbush Ambulance Association, as well as four hazardous condition calls and four cover assignments for neighboring fire departments. In addition, DFD answered alarms for a vehicle fire, an outside rubbish fire, a carbon monoxide detector activation and an unintentional false report.

The DeFreestville Fire Department in North Greenbush Fire District # 1 is a volunteer organization established in 1945 that provides emergency services 24 hours a day. WAITING TO HEAR FROM PARTY CHAIRS ON CAMPAIGN SIGNS MORATORIUM Letter to the Editor: Back in 2009 I wrote The Advertiser suggesting that the political parties in North Greenbush agree to a voluntary moratorium on campaign signs during future elections.

For many years the North Greenbush party chairs had agreed to such a moratorium. It removed a lot of clutter from our roadsides and saved the parties on campaign expenses. Our races were still very competitive. By 2009, that agreement had faded and our community was littered with campaign signs.

In response to my letter in 2009, Republican Party Chair Greg DiGulio indicated his party would agree to a moratorium if the Democrat Party also agreed. Unfortunately, there was no response from the Democrat Party Chair.

Now that another local election year is here, I would like to renew my call for a voluntary moratorium on campaign signs in North Greenbush. Can we hear from both party chairs on this suggestion? ~James Flanigan, North Greenbush

SURRENDER ONE’S SELF TO GOD On Sunday, June 26, 2011, the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will look at the story of Abraham and his son Isaac in one of the most out of the ordinary episodes in the Hebrew Scriptures. This story is one of the most motivating in terms of bringing one to find out what exactly it means to “Surrender One’s Self to God.” In looking at Genesis 22:1-14, the Reverend Edward Van Kampen will discuss Abraham’s following the Lord’s command to sacrifice his only son Isaac on Mount Moriah; and what is involved in being fully consecrated, that is being fully as God desires you to be.

NORMAN NILSEN SR. MEMORIAL PICNIC AND SERVICES Norman R. Nilsen Sr., age 74, died in Sun City, Arizona on March 10, 2011. The cause was Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Born November 1, 1936 in New York, he graduated from Columbia High School in East Greenbush. Norman served in The United States Navy on Active Duty and served as a Reservist for 30 years. On January 18, 1958, he married Virginia Carey of Chatham.

Norman lived nearly all of his life in Nassau, NY. He was a First Class Electricians Mate in the Navy and retired as an electrician at The Times Union in Albany. Norman will be remembered for his warm friendly nature and wonderful sense of humor. He loved the outdoors and was a skilled hunter. He had a deep sense of duty and love for his country and the Navy. Norman Sr. was preceded in death, by his wife. Survivors include his three children, Norman Jr., Lynn and Leigh. He leaves 6 grandchildren, Lacey, Amanda, Derek, Connor, Luther, Angelina, and one great grandchild, Halle.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Military Funeral Service for Norman at the Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville at 12:00 sharp on Friday, July 1st.
