ACL STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR RWANDAN ORPHANS Students from the Academy of Christian Leadership’s AP Literature class (www.ACLonline.org) have raised $1,623 for the benefit of the Left to Tell Foundation, which assists victims of the Rwandan holocaust. The amount raised by ACL is the highest reported on the foundation’s website, and topped the school’s anticipated goal of $1,500. Collected through a fundraising dinner held on April 7, the money will be used to provide much-needed support to orphans in Rwanda. The dinner, “In Memory of the Rwandan Holocaust,” marked the 17th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, during which approximately 800,000 people were brutally murdered. ACL is a non-denominational Christian day school established in 2003 to offer classical Christian education for 6-12 grade students in an atmosphere of Achievement, Attitude, and Adventure.

Letter to the Editor: The North Greenbush Town Ethics Board has finally met to review at least two complaints, long withheld from the Board members by town officials. After going 2 years failing to appoint an Ethics Board as required by Law, the Town Board Majority allowed its EB appointed in January 2010 to stay in the dark for the past 18 months, withholding its correspondence and failing to provide the Board with basic instruction on its obligations to observe the Open Meetings Law requiring Public Notice and Minutes of Proceedings.

A complaint I filed against Councilman Spain was accepted by the Town Clerk on January 25, 2010 and was never turned over to the EB. It was filed again only to be returned by the Town Clerk who did the same thing with a complaint filed by the former Town Comptroller, who was inappropriately fired by the Board Majority after Councilman Desso leaked an erroneous report from a CPA firm to the media to damage the employee’s professional reputation. The EB received these complaints only after they were mailed directly to the home of the Board Chairman which bypassed these documents from being recorded as PUBLIC RECORDS. Requiring the mailing of what would be a public record to the home of a public official rather than the official, business address of town government, is an obvious attempt by town officials to avoid review or accountability for their actions.

SUNY POTSDAM NAMES AREA STUDENTS TO DEAN’S LIST The State University of New York at Potsdam recently honored students who excelled academically in the Spring 2011 semester, by naming nearly 400 students to the Dean’s List.

The students included: Joseph Hulett, a Music Education major from East Greenbush; Melanie Hadden, a biology major from Hoosick Falls; Julie Koehler, a Childhood/Early Child Education major from Melrose; Rachel Daley, a Art Studio major from West Sand Lake; Hannah Decker, a Music Education major from West Sand Lake; Alyssa Rodriguez, a Psychology major from Wynantskill.

To achieve the honor of being on the Dean’s List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours that semester with a grade point average of between 3.25 and 3.49.

BERYL MOUL GRANGE SCHOLARSHIP SELECTS 2011 RECIPIENT The Beryl Moul Grange Scholarship Committee met earlier this month and selected Paige Johnson of Castleton to be the recipient of the 2011 Beryl Moul Scholarship. This scholarship was established in memory of Beryl Moul who placed great value in giving back to the community and in particular investing in young people to help them strive to live up to the mission of the grange.

Paige Johnson, daughter of Kris and Ken Johnson of Castleton, is a 2010 graduate of Maple Hill High School and has spent this past year in the International Rotary Exchange Program. Paige has been accepted to the University of Vermont in the fall and intends to major in agriculture and hopes to eventually come back to her family’s farming operation to pursue her career. Paige has been active over the years in music, sports, 4-H and church to name a few. Paige is clearly entering into an area of education and livelihood that meets the Grange mission. VOLUNTEERS RESTORE HISTORIC CEMETERY Volunteers from the Rensselaer Land Trust, Historic Saint Agnes Cemetery, Troy Irish Genealogy Society, Down in Denver Books of Stephentown, and friends and community members came together on Sunday, June 26, 2011, for cemetery restoration work at the historic Stephentown Old Baptist Church Cemetery on Calvin Cole Road. Under the guidance and instruction of cemetery restoration specialist Joseph Ferrannini of Grave Stone Matters, tombstones were excavated, reset and cleaned by the volunteers. The Old Baptist Cemetery is an early Stephentown cemetery with graves predating the mid-19th century, including a grave of a General from the American Revolutionary War. The property is owned by Alice LeBlanc who is undertaking responsibility to restore the cemetery and granted the Rensselaer Land Trust a conservation easement on the property.

Rensselaer Land Trust is the only not-for-profit land trust primarily dedicated to the preservation of natural spaces throughout Rensselaer County, especially land that protects sources of drinking water, serves as natural habitat for wildlife, and maintains the scenic rural character of the community.

PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT AS WYNANTSKILL SEEKS NEXT DISTRICT LEADER The Wynantskill CSD Board of Education is seeking community input as it searches for a new district leader to replace Christine Hamill, who announced her retirement as superintendent effective December 31, 2011. The public is invited to attend a special community forum on Tuesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. in the Gardner-Dickinson media center.

The forum will help the Board identify the qualifications and characteristics that the community is looking for in the new district leader. Board President Andrea Paone encourages the community to participate in this process. “Community input is a critical part of a search process designed to help the Board select a leader that most closely meets our school community’s unique needs and qualifications,” said Paone.

The Board of Education is working closely with Questar III to assist in the search for a new district leader. Using information gathered at the community forum and provided by the Board, Questar III will help the Board develop a profile of the desired skills and characteristics of the next district leader. This information will also be used to develop recruitment materials.

Why would anyone’s rights have to be voted on, yes you have rights, no you don’t. We are the country that defends people’s rights. I was disappointed in President Obama for taking a stance for civil unions as being equal, if separate but equal were true, why don’t we go back to segregated schools? Separate military by race? Separate is not equal, and for a man of color it is disgraceful for him to suggest such a thing. I’ve heard that gay marriage is an affront to the sanctity of marriage. If this were so, then why is divorce legal? Elizabeth Taylor had been married 8 times; where’s the sanctity in that?

What does one couples marriage have to do with anybody else? I’ve been married for 19 yrs; no matter what any another couple has done it has not affected our marriage. I’ve heard the ridiculous claim that why don’t we let a man and his dog get married then. What part of two people getting married includes a dog? Why would anyone compare any person to a dog or any other animal? If a gay couple choose to, they should have the right to go to a justice of the peace or judge (salaries paid by everyone’s tax dollars) to perform their ceremony. If not, wouldn’t that be taxation without representation. On the matter of religion, believe in your own religion and leave others to their right to believe or not believe as they see fit. If it is against a religions beliefs to marry a gay couple that is that religions right to do so. The last argument I would like to address is that being gay is a lifestyle choice. So what if it is; we all choose to live our lives as we see fit. Who is omnipotent to decide someone else doesn’t have that right. It was a fun day with exhibits, crafts, clowns, hot dogs, cookies, and people dressed in costumes representing their country of origin.

Sixty-seven children were registered and the program began July 5th, prizes will be awarded to readers. The summer reading program is accepting registrations until the end of July, so if your child age 5-12 years would like to enjoy this year’s “One World, Many Stories” there is still time to sign up. The library will also have craft time every Tuesday at 2 PM and Preschool Story Time every Thursday at 11AM. Teen programs are planned and more information is available at the library, 676 East St., Rensselaer, or call 462-1193.

The next meeting of the Friends will be held on September 19th at 6:30 PM.

The Schodack Democratic Club members would like to thank the residents of the Maple Hill Road corridor for their generosity during the Schodack Democratic Club’s recent food drive. Donations helped restock the shelves of the Anchor Food Pantry in Castleton. “We are pleased and thankful for the overwhelming support of our neighbors for this, our first food drive. We collected more than 200 lbs. of food to help Schodack residents who are in need,” said Linda Underwood, Schodack Democratic Club and Committee secretary.

Underwood helped coordinate the event with fellow Democratic Club member Ed Prevost, who came up with the idea for a food drive. “We are encouraged by the reception our food drive received and look forward to the next one.”

Underwood said the Schodack Democratic Club plans to hold food drives quarterly, going to a different area of the town each time. The next one is slated for September.

“These food drives are our way of giving back to the community.

They help us reach out to not only our neighbors in need, but also those who wish to help out,” Underwood concluded.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE AND SHERIFF WARN OF POSSIBLE PHONE SCAM Rensselaer County Executive, Kathy Jimino and Rensselaer County Sheriff, Jack Mahar, alerted residents to a possible phone scam targeting seniors and potentially the general public.

An astute Troy resident contacted County authorities last Thursday to report a phone call she received from an unidentified individual attempting to collect donations for the Rensselaer County Senior Home Delivered Meal program.

Sheriff Mahar said his office has taken immediate action to investigate the source of the phone call.

“There are many scams out there that victimize innocent people, but nothing is more despicable than those which target the elderly,” said County Executive Jimino. “We want to remind residents, and especially our seniors, that no County Department will ever contact you by phone to request a donation.”

“Telemarketing fraud is a crime and telephone scammers are good at what they do,” said Sheriff Mahar. “They will say anything and target everyone to try to cheat people out of their money. Any time you are asked for money over the phone it should immediately send up a red flag. If you can, take the phone number and call my office immediately. Also, be aware that criminals watch the news. They latch onto what is new and at the front of people’s minds and will use current events to appear legitimate.”

Studies show that senior citizens are more at risk to be targeted by telemarketing scams than other age groups.

DEMPSEY NAMED TO PRESIDENT LIST AT CHAMPLAIN Ana Dempsey, a resident of Schodack Landing, NY, has been named to the Spring 2011 Champlain College President’s List for academic achievements and earning a 4.0 grade average.

Dempsey is majoring in Social Work.

The actual roundabout construction should be starting in July.

The project was proposed by the State ten years ago; we look forward to its completion. The next couple of months will certainly interrupt normal flow and probably some patience.

2.) I would like to thank our neighbors in Rensselaer for the opportunity to work together for the benefit of all in regards to our two water contracts. We have reached an agreement over financing with the city. We have also arrived at a tentative agreement for a long term contract with the city of Troy for water. I would like to thank Mayor Dwyer, Neil Bonesteel, Hank LaBarba, Paul Goldman and Margo Thomas for their continued and great effort.

3.) The summer season is here; although some days we question it. I would like to thank Jim Hempstead and Bill Malone for their outstanding work in the parks. The town park is at full capacity and Onderdonk is looking great.

The summer program will be starting after the 4th of July.

Daniela Lanni and Anita Nero have done a wonderful job in organizing the programs for our kids.

Our music in the park will be starting at Onderdonk Park on Tuesday nights in August. Bocci is held on Thursday nights at 5:45. Stop by and say hello to Carmela or give her a call at 477-4775.

4.) We are very proud of Randy Cherubino. Randy has been elected Fire Chief of the Year in Rensselaer County; a great honor for a great leader.

EASTON NEIGHBORS TO HOLD EASTON FAMILY PICNIC The Easton Neighbors group will sponsor Easton Neighbors Day and a picnic on Saturday, July 16th at the St. Patrick’s Pavilion at the Spirtual Life Center on Burton Road. All Easton residents, their families and friends are invited to attend.

SUNY POTSDAM NAMES AREA STUDENTS TO PRESIDENT’S LIST The State University of New York at Potsdam recently honored students who excelled academically in the Spring 2011 semester, by naming 880 students to the President’s List. SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller honored the students for maintaining the high grades necessary to make the list. The students included: Andrea Hollinger, a Performance Music major from Averill Park; Nicholas Manzella, a Performance Music major from Castleton; Joshua Matrese, a Spanish major from Castleton On Hudson; Heidi Crampton, a Music Education major from East Greenbush; Roslyn Brandes, a Music Education major from Rensselaer; Marcus Domfort, a Business Administration (BS) major from Rensselaer; Michael Ganance, a Biology major from Rensselaer; Daniel Jordan, a Music Education major from Rensselaer; Chase Winkler, a Visual Arts major from Sand Lake; Kevin Gifford, a Music Education major from Troy; Elise Kowalczyk, a Performance Music major from Troy; Nia Rowe, a Mathematics major from Troy; Daniel Costello, a Physics major from Troy; Alexander Terry, a Business Administration (BS) major from Wynantskill.

To achieve the honor of being on the President’s List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours that semester with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

CITIZEN - GOVERNMENT DIALOG SUCCESSFUL I was pleased to witness good citizenship, and good government come together at an event in Schodack recently. People assembled in the East Schodack Firehouse, for Coffee, bagels and conversation at 9:30 Saturday morning, and two hours later the spirited exchange had to be called to an end with the room still full. The June 19th event was organized by the Democratic Chairs from Nassau, Schodack and East Greenbush with Mark Streb, local liaison from the Governor’s Office, discussing Mr. Cuomo’s Consolidation Plan. Also in attendance were District Attorney Rich McNally, and Sheriff Candidate Gary Gordon.

After brief remarks from the guest speakers, the floor opened up to questions and public discussion. The conversation was lively as an open and responsive L - R: Governor’s Liaison Mark Streb, DA Rich interchange took off with participation from all corners of the room. Points McNally, Mark Berger from Nassau, and Sheriff were raised by people from all three towns on topics including, school Candidate Gary Gordon, stand with Elizabeth Gable administration costs, highway maintenance and shared services, land use, of Schodack, and Kim Halloran from East Greenbush property assessments, and public safety issues. Within the group of attendees at the close of a Citizen-Government Dialog were a School Superintendent, a Tax Assessment Professional, and several Gathering local officials, including Supervisor McCabe, Councilwoman O’Brien, and myself.

Broad based discussion remained non-partisan and informative, as Mr. McNally, and Mr. Gordon chimed in with helpful observations based on their experience in past positions.

The first attempt at this format was presented in Schodack during the Spring. Last week’s event expanded the concept to neighboring Towns and proved to be a great success. The organizers told me they plan to continue looking for good locations to hold more of these sessions on a periodic schedule. As an elected representative, and an involved citizen, I will be looking forward to future opportunities for this open exchange of dialog. ~Sue Mangold, East Greenbush Town Board

DEC LAUNCHES GRANT INITIATIVE Funding Available to Municipalities for Public Outreach and to Buy Equipment New York state municipalities can apply for $60,000 in New York State Clean Air Grants to help manage residential organic waste that was previously burned and to build community understanding of the serious health and safety hazards of open burning, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today.

“Open burning of leaves, branches and other organic materials poses serious health risks and safety hazards,” Commissioner Martens said. “Burning organic materials can release harmful pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde and lead. In addition, open burning is the largest single cause of wildfires in New York. These grants will help provide localities with safe “Your Hometown Garden Center” alternatives to open burning and educate the public about the hazards of burning organic waste.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provided DEC with the funding for the New York State Clean Air Grants Program under the Clean Air Act (CAA) STAG appropriation to address Great Lakes Air Deposition issues.

The amount of individual awards will vary up to $5,000. A wide variety of projects are eligible for grant funding including outreach programs to educate residents about outdoor burning restrictions, the health and safety hazards of outdoor burning and safer ways to dispose of organic waste materials that were historically burned. Also eligible for grants are projects to assist in the purchase of equipment to manage organic wastes such as vacuum leaf collectors, chippers and shredders as well as specialized composting equipment such as grinders, windrow turners and bagging equipment.

Applications for the New York State Clean Air Grant Program are due to DEC by Friday, August 5, 2011. A full description of Mulch-Topsoil-Compost-Stone-Hay-Straw-Propane the program, eligible projects and who can apply is available at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/.

While the Roadshow will accept anything that’s old and valuable, they will be focusing on: gold and silver coins made before 1965, military items, fine art, musical instruments, pocket and wrist watches. Scrap gold is expected to be a popular category this week due to soaring gold prices.

Buyers for the Roadshow have noticed a tremendous increase in the amount of gold coming to the shows, and for good reason. Record gold prices have Roadshow guests cashing in on broken or outdated jewelry with our fair and honest purchase offers.

Sky High Adventures and Grafton Lakes State Park announce that Off-Road Triathlons will be held at Grafton Lakes State Park the weekend of July 16th and 17th, 2011. The Sky High Kids Off-Road Triathlon, a USA Triathlon sanctioned youth event, will take place on Saturday, July 16th, with a 9:00 am start time. The Sky High Off-Road Triathlon at Grafton Lakes, a Nissan Xterra Points Series Race, will take place on Sunday, July 17th, with an 8:00 am start time.

The Sky High Kids Triathlon includes a 100m swim (within the roped area of Long Pond), 5k bike ride (paved sidewalks, paths and walkways), and 1k run (around the picnic area). The race is open to youth ages 7-17.

The Xterra Course includes a 1k swim, 20k mountain bike ride, and a 6k trail run.

Participants may register on-line at www.skyhighadventures. com or pick up an application at the Grafton Lakes State Park office. Course viewing, packet pick-up and late registration will take place on Saturday, July 16th, from 7-8am for the Kids Triathlon and from 12 to 3 pm for the Xterra. The Children’s Triathlon allows for only individual entry. However, the Xterra triathlon may be competed as an individual or as a team.

The top finishers in each age group of the Xterra event earn points to qualify for the Xterra National Championships in Lake Tahoe and the World Championships in Hawaii. Several Grafton athletes qualify and compete each year in the National and World Xterra Championships. The Xterra Triathlon held in Grafton Lakes State Park has become nationally known for its excellence, and is a true test for any athlete seeking a challenge.

MARY’S & SAMARITAN HOSPITALS OFFER HEALTHY HEARTS WALK St. Mary’s Hospital/Seton Health and Samaritan Hospital/Northeast Health, as part of the Healthy Hearts joint initiative, will hold the next “Just Walk With a Doc” event featuring a one-mile community walk with a cardiologist, Saturday, Jul. 9, 8 - 10 a.m., Farmer’s Market, Riverfront Park, Troy.

Dr. Robert Benton, of Capital Cardiology, will offer a short educational talk on diabetes, and lead participants in the onemile walk downtown. Participants will be able to ask medical questions in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

The Just Walk With a Doc program is part of a national initiative designed to educate and encourage physical activity to improve health. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar, elevate mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes. Additional walks are planned Saturdays, August 13, September 10, and October 8, from 8 - 10 a.m., at the Farmer’s Market in Troy. All events are open to the public free of charge.

LaROCQUE RECEIVES BS IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT Andrew LaRocque, a 2007 graduate of Averill Park High School, graduated May 21 from Endicott College, located in Beverly, Massachusetts, with a Bachelors of Science in Sports Management. Andrew served an internship at Harvard University’s Athletic Department and was Captain of the Endicott College Golf Team where he captured several low medalist honors and led his team to several tournament championships, including the ECAC Division III Championship in 2009.

Andrew has accepted a position with the Atlanta-based American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and is managing multiple golf tournaments for the AJGA on the west coast.

Conlin, Schodack Town Clerk, would like to announce that the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps (Duck Stamps) are now available. The stamps may be purchased for $16.00 from the Town Clerk’s Office. Each waterfowl hunter, 16 years of age and over, must carry on his/ her person a valid Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp and also carry a valid New York State small game hunting license. For Local Hunting Regulations, please contact the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

The stamp sales provide money for migratory bird habitat conservation projects. Additionally, Federal Duck Stamps can be used to gain free admission to National Wildlife Refuges.

MURPHY GOLF EVENT SET July 10 & 11 are the dates set for this year’s Annual Tim Murphy Memorial Golf Benefit Event. This two day celebration raises funds to provide scholarship support to the children and grandchildren of Public Safety Officers.

Sunday afternoon, July 10th, features a party at McGeary’s in Albany that is open to all. Music will be provided by local favorite Kevin McKrell. Beer, Soda and light fare are included for the donation of $25, and a wide array of raffle prizes is being assembled. Golfers take to the links at the Capital Hills Course on Monday, July 11th, with a shotgun start after lunch, and an awards banquet at the end of the day. Registration is open to singles and foursomes for this popular charity event.

The basil in my garden just stopped growing. The leaves never got any bigger than a penny and the base of the stems turned all brown and woody. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because of all the rain we had in June. At the same time, my cilantro is flourishing! In years past, I never had any luck with cilantro and this rainy year, I have a bumper crop.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a direct analogy to made between gardening and investing. Last year small American companies outperformed the rest of the market. In 2009, American mid-sized companies were the big winners. In 2008, U.S. Treasury bonds were one of the ONLY sectors to have a positive return, while virtually every stock sector posted losses.

Enter the concept of diversification.

Diversification simply means not putting all your eggs in one basket. A well constructed portfolio will include stocks, bonds, and cash. Why? Because, these asset classes tend to behave opposite each other. In industry terms, they are â&#x20AC;&#x153;negatively correlated.â&#x20AC;? Typically, when bonds (fixed income) are high, stocks (equities) are low and vice versa.

Back to the basil and cilantro. Good thing my garden has both, right? Because, apparently basil doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like a rainy summer, but cilantro does. If I had planted only basil, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be very disappointed. And next year, if I plant only cilantro, and we have a hot, dry summer, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be equally disappointed. Moral of the story? Plant a variety! Have a well diversified garden!

WEST SAND LAKE FIRE DISTRICT PUBLIC FORUM ON PROPOSED FIRE STATION The West Sand Lake Fire District held its fourth Public Forum on Thursday, June 30th. The topic of discussion is the proposed new $5 million Fire Station project. The project will raise the annual fire tax in the District $1 per $1,000 assessed valued.

Representatives from the Fire Department, the Fire District, HUEBER-BREUER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY’s Division of Fire Protection Services, and Pacheco Ross Architects introduced preliminary designs. The presentation also focused on the safety of the Emergency Responders, the impact on the West Sand Lake Community, preliminary tax implications, and a timeline to Referendum. Residents provided input and were encouraged to express opinions on various aspects of the plan.

The Fire Station Building Committee will continue to revise and develop plans as the Community continues to provide input.

Two more Community Forums are scheduled for July 21 and August 11 at the Fire Station. All residents of the West Sand Lake Fire District are encouraged to attend to assist in this important development.

The Referendum Vote will take place on Tuesday, August 16th.
