HOW MUCH HOMEWORK IS TOO MUCH? Letter to the Editor: As a student, my opinion is that homework should be limited. There’ve been research studies that have proven that homework doesn’t help students with their education. Even if it does, homework can take away from family and relaxation time. I wonder if teachers think I need more to do to fill up my hours not at school; do they think I don’t have a life? Maybe they don’t expect me to have a job that fills up my weekends. Maybe they don’t think I’m juggling two sports all week. They don’t know that I have a little brother, who scored a goal in his game the other day, and where was I? At home, still working to complete my seemingly endless science questions.

Or when my sister needed help on her math questions? Sorry, I’ve got my own problems to do. I wonder if they know it was my friend’s birthday, and I stayed up even later to make her a card. I would find myself dozing off during classes, feeling the effects of the previous night. Is it better to stay up and finish my homework, and not be able to focus the next day, or should I get enough sleep and pay more attention in class? You’d think that since teachers are people too, they would know what it’s like to have other commitments. Do they enjoy music, theatre, or outings with friends? So often my teachers share with us parts of their personal lives, and I wonder what they think I do in my free time. Quite often my parents would lecture me on my bedtimes and the fact that my school takes over most of my personal life. I’ve been to meetings and video showings about homework overloads, and I see people becoming aware of the effects of schoolwork on students, but I question what is actually being done about it. I do enjoy being at school and am grateful for the education I am receiving, but I just wish my whole life didn’t revolve around it. ~Emilie Coutin, Averill Park High School - 11th grade

Boy Scout Kyle Gorzynski of Colonie who for his Eagle Scout Community Project worked with our staff to renovate Catherine’s Closet our thrift store at Circles of Mercy. The renovation project required consultation, detailed planning, recruitment of human resources to assist with the work and the need to solicit donations of materials and hardware in order to complete the project. With the help of his family, fellow Boy Scouts and Leaders from Troop 96 – at St. Pius Church in Loudonville and their parents, the project was successfully coordinated and completed resulting in the tripling of the hanging space for clothing in the thrift store.

MARK JAMES SMITH JR. COMMISSIONED SECOND LIEUTENANT IN US ARMY On June 3, 2011, Mark James Smith Jr. was Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in Hamilton Hall at Elmira College, Elmira, NY. His Commissioning Officer was Lieutenant Colonel Steven Alexander Cornell Army ROTC. In addition, on June 5, 2011, Smith graduated from Elmira with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark James Smith Sr. of Elmira, NY and Bonnie Zayhowsky Smith Levchik of Prattville, AL. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Fredrick Smith Jr. of Postenkill, NY and John Zayhowsky and the late Carol Boobie Zayhowsky of Poestenkill, NY. Smith is the father of 13-year-old daughter Avery Kate Smith.

Smith attended Poestenkill Elementary and in his youth moved to Prattville, AL, then graduated from Prattville High School.

He has served several tours of duty in Afghanistan and will now Commission into the Armor Corps reporting for duty at Fort Drum.

Your cast-offs can help support the Stephentown Historical Society. Their fourteenth annual Community Tag Sale will be Saturday, July 30. Your donation of clean, useable items will help support their programs. If you have things you no longer want or need, you may donate them to the society for this sale. Goods can be brought to the Heritage Center on Garfield Road on the two previous Fridays (July 22 and 29) from 1 to 4 pm. They cannot accept clothing or large appliances, and small appliances should be in working order. The highly visible location is the grassy field south of Gardner’s Coffee Shop on Route 22 in Stephentown, New York. This event has attracted a large crowd of shoppers in past years.

WEST SAND LAKE FIRE DISTRICT PUBLIC FORUM ON PROPOSED FIRE STATION The West Sand Lake Fire District will hold its fifth Public Forum on Thursday, July 21st, at the fire station. The topic of discussion is the proposed new $5 million Fire Station project. District officials anticipate the proposed project will increase the annual fire tax in the District $1 per $1,000 assessed valuation.

Preliminary designs will be reviewed including a new 17,000 square foot station and demolition of the existing buildings with the exception of the museum structure, according the Deputy Chief Dan Hartstein. The presentation will also focus again on the safety of the Emergency Responders, the impact on the West Sand Lake Community, preliminary tax implications, and a timeline to Referendum. “District resident input is especially critical at this juncture” said Fire Chief Dan Hogle.

The Fire Station Building Committee will continue to revise and develop plans as the Community continues to provide input.

One additional Community Forum is scheduled for August 11 at the Fire Station. All residents of the West Sand Lake Fire District are encouraged to attend to assist in this important development. The Referendum Vote will take place on Tuesday, August 16th. Please join us at the Forums prior to the vote, so that you can cast an informed, educated vote.

TO SUPPORT REBUILDING OF POULTRY BUILDING The Rensselaer County Legislature voted at the June 14 legislative meeting to support the reconstruction of a livestock building at the Schaghticoke Fair damaged this past winter, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced. Legislators voted at the June 14 meeting to authorize funds to match community contributions to help in the reconstruction of the popular Poultry Building exhibit area. For generations, the Poultry Building at the county fairgrounds have showcased chickens, ducks and other birds, along with rabbits. The birds and rabbits are often displayed by 4-H and other youth organizations and draw large crowds during the fair.

Unfortunately, the Poultry Building was damaged when heavy snows accumulated and caused the roof to collapse. Insurance will not cover reconstruction of the building. “The Schaghticoke Fair is one the great summer events in the Northeast and the Poultry Building is a major attraction at the fair. The Legislature is happy to partner in rebuilding this important part of the Fair,” said Reid. Under a resolution approved by the County Legislature, $10,000 in unexpended legislative funds will be made available as a match to dollars raised by community efforts. A series of community fundraisers are planned for the summer months in support of reconstruction the Poultry Building.

NG ETHICS BOARD OK’s SPAIN’S VOTE TO BENEFIT BROTHER The North Greenbush Town Ethics Board has finally met LEGALLY to rule on a complaint filed in January 2010 which was withheld from Board members by town officials. The complaint asked for a determination on the appropriateness of Councilman Spain’s vote to rescind a residency requirement and then vote to appoint an out of town attorney to a paid town job in exchange for providing his brother free legal services in a civil lawsuit. They cleared Spain of violating the Ethics Code because his brother is not, in their view, an immediate member of Councilman Spain’s family. When the decision was explained after a questionable executive session, the Board’s Chairman elaborated by saying essentially if Spain had been aware of the conflict before he voted, it might have altered the view of the Ethics Board.

They were then informed that Spain was aware of the conflict before he voted. A discussion took place at the Town Board meeting prior to the vote. Councilman Desso had recused himself from a similar vote involving the other Deputy Town Attorney who was providing him free legal services. The Ethics Board was also informed after their decision that Spain’s brother, Jeff, had also spoken at the meeting and said it was no one’s business what financial arrangement he had with the attorney involved.

This is an unfortunate decision by an Ethics Board which wanted to do the right thing, but failed to get all of the relevant information in a public setting prior to its secret discussions in executive sessions. Now the door is open for Town Board members to use their public offices to enrich family members who are not immediate family members as defined by the Ethics Board in its disturbing reasoning.

Most would agree that a brother is about as close as one can get to an immediate family member and the decision sets an unfortunate precedent for North Greenbush. You can vote to enrich a brother or sister but not your wife and kids. ~Charles B. Smith, Wynantskill

YOUNG ADULT PARENT/CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP! This education/support group is for parents and caregivers residing in Rensselaer County who has a young adult (age 1624) who has a mental health issue (with or without a substance abuse). NASSAU SUPERVISOR’S REPORT By: David Fleming It has been a very active summer with a great deal of progress.

Nassau Town Camp is in full swing with over 120 campers. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Pat Sherman and her staff for such a great job serving our youth.

I would also like to remind residents that there are frequent updates regarding the Loeffel Toxic Site at our website (www.townofnassau.org). Please visit the website often for details of ongoing activities and town financial information.

At our recent meeting, the Town Board authorized an additional $71,000 in chip seal projects for town roads and another $35,000 for asphalt and shimming work.

We also provided an update on the Burden Lake Sewer District.

Most recently, the Town has requested an extension of the closing date on our construction financing as we work to move this project forward. This request has helped provide much needed flexibility for the project.

The Board has ratified the salaries and appointments for summer camp personnel and has authorized the review and extension of the Section 8 Housing contract for affordable housing. We also passed a resolution requesting a reduction in speed limit for County Route 21 following resident complaints.

We have approved the Final Generic Environmental Impact Statement (FGEIS) for the Comprehensive Plan and have scheduled a meeting on these documents for July 28, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

Fred McCagg, who also serves as the Youth Committee Chairman, reported on a successful Game Night. We extend our sincere thanks to Zia’s Pizza for supporting the event. At the recommendation of Deputy Supervisor Ron Sears, I proposed the Town apply for a Clean Air Grant from DEC to assist with Transfer Station operations. The Board has approved this application as well as approved the first disbursement of CDBG funds through a previously secured $400,000 grant that is administered by the Town.

Our Building Inspector also helped spread the word that those purple boxes you see in trees around Nassau are traps for the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle. This is part of a pest census program to test for the spread of this nasty bug.

The Fund is currently seeking more families to give innercity children a two-week experience this summer. By volunteering as a host family for the Friendly Town program, you can help give a child a break from the heat and noise of the crowded city streets.

“Being able to run around and be outside is a freeing experience for her,” says one Fresh Air host about her Fresh Air child. “I still enjoy watching her face as she takes joy in the simple things, like roasting a marshmallow or jumping into the lake.”

EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT At worship on Sunday, July 24, 2011, the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will Worship with Paul’s letter to the Romans 8:26-39 as its base, where Paul speaks of the Spirit of God that empowers us, helping us to be faithful in all things. In the sermon titled, “Empowered by the Holy Spirit,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will center thought around a theme dealing with how prayer in Jesus’ name is a challenge for us- a challenge for people like us to approach God with our intercessions and petitions. Even so, the good news is that we don’t have to fully explain or comprehend prayer in order to pray. The Holy Spirit helps us. Join us and come to more fully understand how God speaks, listens, and responds to us through human beings, and also that God works in ways beyond our powers.

As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our June 14, 2011 meeting.

Before reviewing the meeting, I had the opportunity to provide support to Camp Adventure, the summer camp operated by the Southern Rensselaer County Boys and Girls Club. Camp Adventure is located on picturesque Burden Lake in the Town of Sand Lake. The day camp hosts a variety of activities including swimming, hiking, basketball, softball, volleyball and other games. The 2011 summer season is expected to include 85 campers from throughout southern Rensselaer County. Like many in Rensselaer, Stammel and his family attended summer camps sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club. Like so many other community organizations, funding is at a premium for the Club and I was proud to be able to provide support.

I recognize the problems created by rising property taxes, particularly in cities like Rensselaer, and supported the enactment of the tax cap by the State Legislature. However, I was very disappointed to learn the State Legislature did not approve comprehensive mandate relief for county and local governments. Without mandate relief, spending will continue to increase and the effectiveness of the tax cap will be reduced.

Legislators also asked for a review of existing safeguards for electronics benefit cards. There was a recent episode in Albany County where approximately $6 million was misappropriated through misuse of electronic benefits cards. To ensure county taxpayers are protected, we asked county social services officials to review existing technology and procedures.

I also joined in supporting a new policy to provide two weeks paid vacation to Hudson Valley Community College employees returning from active military duty overseas.

The new Rensselaer County Officials and Services Directory for 2011 are now available. The Officials and Services Directory includes information about organizations and services available in the county, and is available free of charge to residents and businesses in the county. It has been brought to my attention there has been some miss information and confusion around Town in regard to section 250-124 in our Town Zoning Reg’s. This section deals with documentation of businesses that may have become nonconforming when our new Zoning Reg’s became effective Jan. 1, 2011.

Here are the facts. The Town of Sand Lake acknowledges that amending land use regulations may cause certain uses, structures, and/or lots to become nonconforming. This does not mean your property, building or business is now illegal. If the afore mentioned were legal at the time of the adoption of our new reg’s, they continue to be legal. The only items 250124 deals with is documenting your nonconforming use with the Building Inspector. This is not mandatory! Most of the confusion lies in section 250-124 B. (1) (b). This section states, “The fee for documenting your nonconforming status will be waived if you apply within 18 months of the adoption of this chapter.” At this time the Town Board has not established a fee. You will not lose your nonconforming status if you do not submit documentation with 18 months. Pre-apps due by July 22, 2011 Troy Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (TRIP, Inc) announced that it has been selected by NeighborWorks America in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help promote the Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP) in the state of New York.

Congress provided $1 billion dollars to HUD, as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, to implement EHLP. The program will assist homeowners who have experienced a reduction in income and are at risk of foreclosure due to involuntary unemployment or underemployment, due to economic conditions or a medical condition, and are at least 90 days delinquent on their mortgage as of June 1st, 2011.

Under EHLP guidelines, eligible homeowners can qualify for an interest free loan which can bring the homeowner current and pay a portion of their monthly mortgage for up to two years, up to $50,000. The EHLP program will pay for homeowners’ missed mortgage payments and past due charges including principal, interest, and escrowed taxes, and insurance. EHLP is expected to aid as many as 2,633 distressed borrowers in New York State.

“The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program will potentially make it possible for struggling New York homeowners to receive some much needed assistance in paying their mortgages,” stated Bobbi Carter, Director of the TRIP NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center. “There is a very short window of opportunity for homeowners to apply. We must receive all Preapplications by JULY 22, 2011.”

DO YOUR JOB OR RESIGN Letter to the Editor: Did anyone watch the July Sand Lake Town Board Meeting? A town resident questioned why Councilman Splain does not report on any work he has completed for the month. The fact is, Councilman Splain has not worked on any town committees for several months. He quit all of the town committees he was assigned and has refused to do any work on them. His colleagues, Councilmen John Glasser and Ray Turner, sit back silently month after month and say nothing about their running mate’s lack of cooperation. Apparently, Mr. Splain’s majority rule vote is more important to them than his responsibility to the people of the town. If Councilman Splain does not want to perform the duties of his office, then he should resign or be asked to step down by the fellow members of his party. The residents of Sand Lake have a right to expect value in return for their payment in salary to their elected officials. ~James Smyth, Averill Park

Rensselaer County Historical Society Librarian Elsa Prigozy, alerted me to Camp Hardin.

This story comes from Troy newspapers and NYS Historian’s 1903 annual report.

On May 2, 1898, the Second Regiment of the National Guard of the State of New York was mustered in and stationed at Camp Black in Hempstead, Long Island under Colonel Edward Hardin.

From there they received orders and left on May 18th for Chickamauga, GA. Because of the intense heat and bad water, sickness quickly developed. They received orders and arrived in Camp Tampa, FL on June 1st. Further illness of typhoid and malaria ensued. Yellow fever had broken out among the troops at Santiago, Cuba and they were disappointed at not being sent there to help with the war effort. Hopes were lifted, hearing they would be transferred to Camp Ferandina, FL on July 27th. There, extra tents for sick calls were added and a local hospital was also used. By August 19th, it was decided they would be transferred to a camp near home.

Camp Hardin was established on a high hill overlooking Sand Lake (Crystal Lake). They had a complete system of waterworks from the lake and each tent had a board floor. They arrived amid a tumultuous welcome to Troy and came to Averill Park via Troy and New England Railway on August 28th. Soon the camp was crowded from early morning to late at night by people who came to see “how the soldiers lived”. A guard was set over the hospital tents to keep onlookers from annoying the sick men. Change of air from the heat of Florida required warmer clothes, additional blankets and Sibley stoves. Short drills to maintain discipline were attempted, but so few were physically able to do any such duty, that it was difficult to get one full company. On September 13th, the last parade was held and Colonel Hardin bade his men good-bye and God-speed.

They were sent on a 30-day furlough and were to report back on October 14th to be mustered out of service. ~Submitted by, Mary French

BLANEY NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT ITHACA COLLEGE Erin Blaney, a freshman at Ithaca College, doublemajoring in Environmental Studies and Art, has been named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2011 Semester. In order to qualify for this special honor in the college’s School of Humanities and Science, students must maintain a GPA of 3.7 or higher while carrying a course load of at least 15 credits. MAKE MATH WORK FOR YOU! Free Basic Math Class for Adults Scheduled to Begin July 26 If you are looking to sharpen your basic math skills or you’re considering beginning your higher education and need a math refresher, “Applied Math for Adults,” can help.

This free, six-week, non credit course will be offered beginning July 26 at Averill Park High School. Classes will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The course will provide a “real world” problem solving approach to basic math concepts like algebra, fractions and percentages.

Students will work to gain more confidence in using math to help them with a variety of tasks. The course can also provide some confidence to those who are considering entering a technical field and need some help with their math skills.

The Castleton Road Racing Commission in conjunction with the Castleton Kiwanis Club have scheduled the 5th Annual Clove Run races to be held in bucolic Castleton, NY on August 13th, with all proceeds once again going to the Anchor food pantry in Castleton. There will be a family fun run, a 5K race, and a 10 mile race starting at the Castleton Elementary School beginning at 8:30 am. Medals will be awarded in all age groups and tee shirts provided to the first 200 runners to register. AP YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE TRYOUTS The Averill Park Youth Soccer League will hold tryouts for its competitive soccer teams on Wednesday, July 27th, at 6PM on the fields between Miller Hill and Sand Lake schools. These teams typically play during the winter and spring months, with a few teams also playing fall competitive soccer.

These teams involve a higher commitment and level of play than our recreational programs and have access to professional coaching during the season. Teams range from 8 and under (6, 7 and 8 year olds) to Under 19. To determine what age group your child falls in, ask whether he or she will still be “under 8” or “under 10” etc, as of August 1, 2011. After the July tryouts, your child may be selected to play on one of our travel teams, which will require a commitment. If you are interested in having your child tryout, but cannot make either of these dates, please send your contact information, your child’s name, age and birth date to tryouts@apysl.org and you will be contacted prior to the next tryouts. Any questions should be directed to that same email, as should requests to have your child evaluated to “play up” at the next age group.

WHERE TO ENJOY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN EAST GREENBUSH The Town of East Greenbush’s Community and Recreational Services Department would like to notify the residents of the town regarding various recreational activities that are available for all to enjoy. The Town Park, located off of Elliott Road, has three new color coded trails ready to be hiked. If you visit the town website at www.eastgreenbush.org, you will find a map of these trails that you may print out to guide you on your way to exploring 1.75 combined miles of trail. Onderdonk Park, located on Hampton Avenue, is now open Monday through Friday from 10 am until 2 pm. There are picnic tables, two horseshoe pits, three bocce courts, a shuffleboard court and a putting green to practice your golf shots on. For your convenience, there are restroom facilities on the premises. At the Hampton Manor Lakehouse area, there are picnic tables, basketball hoop, playground, and tennis courts—jogging and walking around the lake are highly encouraged. Also, feel free to launch your non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes and rowboats. It’s a natural resource right in our backyard that offers yet another form of exercise for individuals and families to enjoy. There is a basketball court on New Jersey Avenue, as well as a new hoop court at the Prospect Heights Park. CAPITAL DISTRICT KICKBALL CHAMPIONS The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) for the Capital Region held its championship on Thursday, July 7th, at 7:30 pm. In their inaugural season, the WAKA Texas Rangers emerged victorious after John Volks hit a 3 run johnson to solidify the win. Louise Bassette received the Most Valuable Player award and game ball for her brilliance on the mound.

Despite the increasingly negative rhetoric about teachers and education in the U.S., these high-achieving recent grads are bringing their passion for mathematics and science education into the nation’s high schools. In a highly competitive selection process, KSTF, an advocate for new teachers and the teaching profession, has awarded each of these beginning teachers a fellowship in math and science valued at up to $150,000 over five years.

The 2011 KSTF Teaching Fellows from New York are: • Timothy Ciampa, Mathematics Teaching Fellow Mr. Ciampa enjoyed mathematics throughout high school and college not just for the challenge that it presented, but also because of its relation to the world. An avid sportsman, he is a member of College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District soccer team. Mr. Ciampa is earning his teaching credential from the State University of New York at Potsdam and hopes to teach in New York State.

It promises to explode the fallacious misrepresentations of her that compromised her ability to win the Presidency for John McCain. It will chronicle her rise from Alaska’s Oil and Gas Commission to defeat the “good-ol-boy” establishment, win the governorship and end the cronyism and corruption that plagued her state. This movie will give hope to millions of Americans who would like her to do the same for the rest of the country in whatever capacity she is most able to do it.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has just announced her candidacy for President. She is known to TEA Partiers for her stand against government dependency and for things like School Choice. She is the mother of five children and has been the foster parent of 23 more. She holds 2 law degrees and coowns a mental health care practice with her husband that employs 42 people.

As accomplished as these women have proven to be, wouldn’t you expect them to be championed as such in the media? None of what I have just presented to you was found in any main stream media report. CAREGIVING SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED In 2005, Georgia Southwestern State University’s Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) established the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarship. Created in memory of the renowned poet and peacemaker, the 2011 Stepanek Scholarships were awarded this week. Recipients include Amber Thornton, Troy, N.Y. – Currently pursuing a six-year doctorate degree in physical therapy, Thornton volunteered last year with the Shriner’s Hospital aquatic physical therapy program.

She was able to work one-onone with a child with cerebral palsy. This experience prompted Thornton to pursue a career in physical therapy and help children with disabilities. Thornton is also an active community service volunteer.

This summer we will help kids learn to see themselves as partners in building a Christian community where teamwork and the use of each person’s special talent is required. We will celebrate individuals who give their time and energy to help others and kids will learn that it’s OK to make mistakes because God isn’t finished with them yet!

The “building crews” will rotate through areas at the “construction”, site which include crafts, science, stories and activities. At the Briefing for the Day, we learn our Bible verse through drama and music. Break Time will feature unique snacks and fun outdoor recreation activities. Hard hats will be provided, of course!

Kids Under Construction runs from Monday, August 1, to Friday, August 5, from 9-12:30. Our dedicated and seasoned staff will guide children through all the phases of construction! Our Parish Nurse will tend to any construction “accidents.” The cost for the week is $20 per camper and there is a Celebration on Friday evening for families. HOMETOWN NAZARETH: WHERE JESUS WAS A KID A summer family event called Hometown Nazareth will be hosted at Hope United Methodist Church, 566 Brunswick Rd., Troy, from August 1 to August 5. Families step back in time at Hometown Nazareth, exploring what it was like to live in the town where Jesus grew up. Kids and adults participate in a memorable Bible-times marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Jesus’ mom, Mary, and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God’s Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration—a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. FLAWED DECEDENT ASSETS LAW HURTS RECREATIONAL VEHICLE OWNERS A 2010 state law affecting exemption of personal property from the provision of a will or other probate distribution has touched off a groundswell of discontent and confusion in Rensselaer County and other upstate areas as surviving spouses are finding that they are unable to sell any boat, snowmobile, ATV or trailer that they inherit without contacting Surrogate/Probate Court to obtain the necessary forms rather than using DMV to conduct the sale or transfer. Prior to this law, surviving spouses were able to sell or transfer said vehicles through DMV without going to Surrogate court. “The state should revisit this law and fix this section because I believe that they did not intend to cause this much confusion and aggravation among people who are making a simple transaction.� Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola said, “Spouses are already dealing with the loss of a loved one and now they have the added burden of going to court in order to sell a snowmobile, boat, or trailer instead of filling out a simple DMV form. This law further burdens an already overworked state court system and may cause unnecessary delay in a process that normally takes 15 minutes at DMV.�

Prior to 2010, a surviving spouse selling or transferring a vehicle such as a boat, snowmobile or trailer would fill out a DMV form MV 349.2 and the transaction was accomplished. Under this new law, spouses would no longer be able to use form MV 349.2 and would have to petition Surrogate/Probate court for the necessary papers and forms to conduct such a transfer.

This process places potential hardship on both the spouse, who needs to navigate the new process, and the court which now has a number of unwanted new cases to deal with on top of the existing caseload. “Fortunately, this would not require major action by the legislature to modify this law.� Mr. Merola said, “A simple chapter amendment should be enough to reverse the language and allow the transfer to be done at DMV once again. I see no reason why a spouse trying to transfer a snowmobile, a boat or other vehicle to a family member will have to go to court instead of the DMV. I will be contacting state officials in the next few months to try to have them amend this section of the law that does nothing but overburden the courts and confuse the same constituents that they are trying to help.

Nobody every hired someone unless they had a need. Taxes create jobs many ways. One is by paying for services that make us safer. Services like police, fire protection, and agencies that protect us from cheats and unsafe products. Being more productive is another job creator. An educated work force, transportation that is regulated and maintained improves productivity. The ongoing maintenance of our infrastructure is no difference than the maintenance required on a home or auto. Both require money to be spent.

This all supports a progressive tax system. Businesses and wealthy investors use the services that taxes pay more than poor people. An educated work force, good transportation, security, regulated stock bond and banking markets, all provide more value and improve the income of the wealthy much more than the poor.

Not wanting to pay taxes is like not wanting to maintain your home or auto. The family of Dave Sukup and Peg would like to thank the many friends that have had Dave in their thoughts and prayers over the past 2 years while he was battling his illness. We would also like to send a special thank you to all of the people that sent cards, flowers , food and the many friends who shared their memories and stories. We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to our good friends Richie and Rita Saville for organizing Dave’s get-together after the wake, the Castleton Boat Club for letting us use its facilities and its members for all of their help. Most importantly, we want to express our gratitude to Lee Wetherby who spoke from the heart during Dave’s wake and for being there for Dave during his final months of his serious illness.
