GOOD for the FIRST AMENDMENT and the “SIGN MAN” Letter to the Editor: Mr. Jeff Dorr’s 7/28/11 Letter to the Editor, for some reason, appears to be a personal attack on the “sign man” as he describes him as “a strange and funny man”. Mr. Dorr complains about drivers not being able to read the signs and yet he lists what most of the signs say. He makes a point of trying to denigrate the various signs and obviously the man who put them up. He implies that the man hasn’t heard about the ’08 election results. When indeed, it would seem, the man was referring to getting Democrats and President Obama out of office. This hasn’t occurred, someone should inform Mr. Dorr. The reference to water boarding capturing Bin Laden is true. Information was obtained that eventually led to Bin Laden’s demise. The sign-man cut to the chase. Mr. Dorr’s literal reading would appear to be purposely demeaning. His other comments regarding the signs are of the same nit-picking nature.

It is good that we have the first amendment, so the sign-man and Mr. Dorr can express their ideas. ~J. BSA TROOP 528 AWARDS EAGLE RANK Aaron Uline, a member of Boy Scout Troop 528 in Poestenkill, NY, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor on June 29th 2011 at the Rotary Scout Reservation in Poestenkill. The Sullivan-Jones Post 7466 VFW sponsors the local Troop 528.

Aaron, the son of Joel and Shelly Uline is a 2011 graduate of Averill Park High School. It has taken years of dedication on behalf of Aaron and his parents to earn his Eagle Rank; a high honor recognized by many and lasting a life time.

To reach Eagle rank, scouts must be committed to fulfill requirements for twenty-one merit badges, demonstrate spirit and leadership in the Troop and complete a community service project. Aaron’s Eagle Scout community service project was the dismantling and rebuilding of the Averill Park Preschool playground located on Route 43.

In attendance at Aaron’s Court of Honor among his close family members and friends, included his fellow Scout family and members of Troop 528. In addition were representatives of the Sullivan-Jones Post 7466 VFW, the BSA Mahikan District of Twin Rivers Council, the Town of Poestenkill and our Rensselaer County Legislators.

At Le Moyne, she was a Psychology major and received a bachelor of arts.

WEST SAND LK. FIRE DIST. FINAL PUBLIC FORUM ON PROPOSED FIRE STATION The West Sand Lake Fire District will hold its final Public Forum on Thursday, August 11th, at 7:00PM at the fire station. The topic of discussion is the proposed new $5 million Fire Station project. District officials anticipate the proposed project will increase the annual fire tax in the District .88 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation.

Preliminary designs will be reviewed including a new 17,000 square foot station and demolition of the existing buildings with the exception of the museum structure, according to 2nd Assistant Chief Dan Hartstein. The presentation will also focus again on the safety of the Emergency Responders, the impact on the West Sand Lake Community, preliminary tax implications, and a timeline to Referendum. “District resident input is especially critical at this juncture” said Fire Chief Dan Hogle.

The Fire Station Building Committee will continue to revise and develop plans as the Community continues to provide input.

All residents of the West Sand Lake Fire District are encouraged to attend to assist in this important development.

The Referendum Vote will take place on Tuesday, August 16th.

Residents and Rensselaer County Legislator and North Greenbush Councilman Lou Desso came out for a benefit for animal protection efforts at the Healthy Pet Center on Route 4 on July 9. The benefit was organized by Healthy Pet Center owner Lisa Neal, and supported local rescue efforts and the Companion Animal Placement Program. CAPP assists in the rescue and placement of homeless pets. The event also was an opportunity for homeless animals to be adopted by local residents. “This is a great effort and shows real compassion and concern for animals by many county residents. Lisa Neal, the Healthy Pet Center and many other volunteers provide needed support for our furry friends and they should be commended for their work,” said Desso.

BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS CONTINUING EXHIBITS The Brunswick Historical Society has two continuing exhibits at the present time. The first is a school exhibit with numerous photos of original school buildings, of grade school pupils and school books and other items from district school buildings. Included with this exhibit is a collection of books and papers regarding President James A. Garfield who had a local connection.

The second exhibit is titled, “Let’s go Somewhere and do Something.” This exhibit explores a segment of Brunswick Society in the 1950. It describes the Mr. and Mrs. Club of Sycaway and some of their activities. This was organized by the young post-war generation whose lifestyle was very different from that of their parents. This exhibit also has many photographs, records from the Club and also several outfits which may have been worn by members. These exhibits are on display at the present time and will probably be changed in the fall.

The Society also has an extensive genealogy collection, a number of books of photographs of early citizens of the town, buildings in the town and new clippings from early years.

The Society is open on Wednesday afternoon from 1PM to 3PM and on Saturday from 10AM to 3PM. The public is welcome to visit during those hours to view the exhibits. Admission as always is free.

DEC ANNOUNCES NEW YORK’S FORESTS PHOTO CONTEST In recognition of the importance of forests to the health and well being of society, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced a contest to Celebrate New York’s Forests. The contest is designed to increase awareness of and appreciation for all types of forests, urban and rural, large and small, public and privately owned, across the state.

“The value of our forests cannot be underestimated,” said Commissioner Joe Martens. “In addition to providing clean air, clean water and places for wildlife to live, thousands of people are employed in the forest products, outdoor recreation and tourism industries, thanks to New York’s wealth of forest.”

Submitted photos should capture all aspects of forests and trees in five different categories: • Nature (wildlife, plants, natural landscapes, etc.)

• Enjoying the forest (hunting, fishing, trails, camping, hiking, etc.)

• Trees where we live (parks, streets, yards, etc.)

• Forest products (maple syrup, lumber, baseball bats, furniture, etc.)

• State-owned Forests (State Forests, Forest Preserve lands, forested Wildlife Management Areas, Campgrounds) Contest details, rules and necessary forms can be found on DEC’s website at: www.dec.ny.gov/lands/75396.html.

Photos must be taken in New York State. Photos will be accepted through November 1, 2011. A maximum of three photos may be submitted by a photographer, each with a submission form found on the DEC website, via e-mail or on a CD via regular mail. DEC has non-exclusive rights to use submitted photos on DEC’s website, in the Conservationist magazine, in brochures and in other publications promoting forests and DEC. The photographer will retain ownership of the photo.

The winner in each category will receive a framed print of their photo. Winning photos will be distributed to the media when the winners are announced on or about December 1, 2011.

CLINTON HEIGHTS FIRE RECEIVES GRANT The Clinton Heights Fire Department has received a favorable response to a proposal to purchase a RAD-57 carbon monoxide sensing device. The Grantor is the Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation.

The RAD-57 is a hand held non-invasive device that tests for carbon monoxide poisoning in the blood stream in a matter of seconds. Placed on one’s finger, it quickly analyzes with seven plus wave lengths of light an extraordinary rich stream of physiological data measuring Carboxyhemoglobin and Methemoglobin percent levels in the blood of the patient. Since the inception of Amanda’s Law in New York State stating that all residences must have at least one carbon monoxide detector, there has been a marked increase in “CO calls” in the fire district.

Two recent calls this year were very serious. The RAD-57 will allow the Clinton Heights responding fire fighters—many of whom are EMT’s—to immediately detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide not only in the blood stream of residents but of the fire fighting personnel who enter potentially compromised homes. “FEET & PAWS WALK” “Feet & Paws Walk” will be held on August 14th 2011, at the Cohoes Basin Pond and the walk starts at 7AM. Protect Wildlife in and near the Cohoes Basin Pond that runs pararell along 787 North & South bound through Cohoes. Each year, Beavers leave their Dam site in search of food and get run over by nearby passing cars. These incidents are a tragedy since nothing has been done to prevent this from occurring.

The Pond gives home to many different species of wildlife and has become a wildlife preserve and attraction to many animals.

Currently the County is due to receive nearly $18 million in reimbursement of funds the County is required to pay in the first instance to administer and partially fund the State’s mandated programs.

The State then reimburses the county for their share of the cost of the program the State requires the county to provide.

“Recent reports from the Governor, Legislature, and Comptroller indicated that State taxes are generating more revenue than expected for the State, yet the State is continuing to withhold reimbursement to counties for the expenses we incur administering and paying our required share for the programs they mandate us to provide. Their refusal to reimburse counties in a timely manner, in many cases for nearly a year, forces us to borrow money to meet our other obligations driving up the cost of government to our residents,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

“The State does not allow us nor any taxpayer to be late with the money owed to the State, yet they are chronically late in paying money they owe us for their share of the mandated program they require. Especially at a time when our State leaders are announcing that the State coffers have more money in hand then they expected, this practice of not paying us the money we are due is unacceptable,” concluded Jimino.

TSATSAWASSA PROTECTIVE FIRE CO. 23rd ANNUAL PIG ROAST On Saturday, August 20, the Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Inc. will hold its 23rd Annual Pig Roast on the firehouse grounds, located just off Route 20 in the hamlet of Brainard, NY. Doors will open at 1PM and the afternoon will be filled with fun events, including door prizes and games as well as hot dogs, sausage/hamburgers and drinks, all the while the ‘whole pig’ covered with foil, will be roasting on the spit in view of the attendees. About 5PM, the Roast will be served, including baked potato, applesauce, corn on the cob, and of course, the pork - all followed by ice cream with your choice of strawberry or chocolate sauce. MULTICULTURAL MUSIC & MOVEMENT at STEPHENTOWN LIBRARY Multicultural Music & Movement at Stephentown Memorial Library with Beth Jacobs to be held on Wednesday, August 10th, at 10AM & 1:30PM. The morning session at 10AM is for preschoolers and young children. It is a basic introduction to dance and stretch combined with sharing of rhythm instruments and maybe some accompaniment by world music. We will use library books to find images for the dances which are accompanied by the singing of rhyming song and maybe the instruments and /or world music. The afternoon session at 1:30PM is for older, school-age children and the participants will have a dance/ movement class and then create a “movement play” by individually referencing something in a book, creating a move for it and talking briefly about the subject. East Greenbush Animal Hospital is a Family Affair The East Greenbush Animal Hospital was started in 2003 by the husband and wife veterinary team of Dr. Chris Rocchio and Dr. Debbie Chew. The pair, who moved to the Capital District in 2000, recognized a need for a new veterinary hospital in East Greenbush after watching clients drive to practices in Albany or even Clifton Park to receive progressive veterinary care. Using their combined 35 years of veterinary experience, and following the advice of clients, neighbors and local humane organizations, Dr. Rocchio and Dr. Chew decided to establish the East Greenbush Animal Hospital to better serve the community. The practice offers compassionate and quality health care for pets of all types within a state-of-the-art veterinary facility that includes the latest in therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities for pets. “Clients expect more from veterinarians, with medical technology growing rapidly every day,” said Dr. Rocchio. “If a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure is available for a human, most likely it is available for your pet. It is an exciting time to practice veterinary medicine; there are more treatment alternatives than ever before.”

The husband and wife team are not new to the idea of working together. They met while completing their internship in Small Animal Surgery and Emergency Medicine at the California Animal Hospital in Los Angeles. “We’ve always worked well together,” states Dr. Chew. “If one of us has a difficult case, we can ask the other for input and advice.” We’ve always had a very similar practice philosophy,” said Dr. Rocchio. “We both feel that patient care and customer service are the two most important factors in a successful practice.” The main hurdle they have faced has been the work schedule. “For the first few years, one of us was always at the practice,” states Dr. Rocchio. “That definitely put a strain on our family life. Now that we have five great veterinarians and a fully trained staff, we’re comfortable being away to enjoy some family time. We trust everyone that works for us to do as good if not a better job than we would do.”

The growth and success of their practice has come mostly through word of mouth in the community.

With their kids, Joey and Penny, they have been involved in raising money for pet rescue organizations such as Animalovers and the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, kids’ organizations such as East Greenbush Soccer and even raising money for a playground at the new Castleton Elementary School.

“We have tried to teach our kids that the best thing about owning a small local business is giving back to the community,” said Dr Rocchio. “Joey and Penny have helped wash dogs at our annual dog wash, paint T-shirts at the CES Community Fair and helped educate clients about proper pet care at the local pet events for the humane society.” Their kids have even had to come down to the hospital in the middle of the night for emergencies. “When you have a C-section in the middle of the night, we need as many helpers as we can get,” said Dr. Chew. “Unfortunately for them, they are the easiest volunteers to find!”

She was a competitive gymnast at Chatham high school.

After High school she Stephen, Karen, Rick & Brian Leggett worked at Yury’s School of gymnastics for 21 years before opening KJ’s. Her son, Brian competed a few years at Yury’s before opening KJ’s.

The first 3 years KJ’s was in a small garage in East Chatham, where the whole family would set the gym up on Sunday night for the next week’s lessons. Brian was at the gym helping by demonstrating the skills to the kids. When the Inflatables where purchased, the gym wasn’t big enough to hold parties so we rented them out and Rick and older son, Stephen managed that part of the business. In fall of 2002, KJ’s moved into its present location and started doing birthday parties at the gym, Rick became party coordinator. When Brian was old enough he became part of the KJ’s staff.

They work together at their studio at 4236 Route 43 in North Greenbush, just east of the Parker School. Their work is quite different; Kathryn preferring brown clay and bright colored glazes, and Mary preferring white clay and Mary Pierce LaFleur & Kathryn Pierce Benson light glazes. There is a gallery in front of the studio which is open by appointment.

The potters will have a very busy fall. On August 7October 26, their work will be on display at Art!, a gallery at 200 First Street in Troy. They will sell pots at a Harvest Festival in Sharon Springs on September 24-25, and the Valatie Fall Festival on October 1 at Great Finds. In October the sisters will take a week-long handbuilding class in Tennessee at the Arrowmont School of Craft.

Goold Orchards Celebrates their 100th Harvest Season!

Goold Orchards began in the spring of 1910 when James and Bertha Goold arrived by rail at Castletons town hub, a small whistle stop called the Brookview Station and walked to the farm they had recently purchased. Bertha, schooled at Emma Willard in Troy and husband James, a recent graduate from Cornell were eager to apply the latest in agricultural technologies on their new fruit farm. Widowed in 1933, Bertha and her teenage son Robert continued to operate and grow the family farm. In 1941 Bob and his wife Marcia Grainer settled into the family farm and began raising a family. They continued to work and grow the family fruit farm into what is now Goold Orchards. Bob and Marcia eventually passed the day to day running of the farm to their children Peter, John and Sue, each of whom contributed to growing and running the family farm. Today, Sue Goold and husband Ed Miller own and operate the Goold family farm and the awardwinning Brookview Station Winery at Goold Orchards.

NASSAU LIQUOR STORE FROM PAST TO PRESENT Nassau Liquor Store was opened in 1965 by Alice and Artie Druba. As experienced business owners, Alice and Artie saw the need for a local package store. The liquor store complimented their existing bar, restaurant and hotel businesses all located within the historic Grand Hotel building.

After being closed for a short while, in June 2007, their daughter Anita and granddaughter Jennifer re-opened the liquor store.

Jennifer earned her BA from SUNY Albany and is training for her first marathon to be completed this fall. Jennifer is also a member and trains with the Capital District Triathlon club. Lyons Lake Is The Summer Place To Be Lyons Lake is a small and tranquil spring-fed lake located just 1.4 miles from Nassau Village. William and Mary Murray, grandparents to current family owner, Irene Rings, purchased the land in 1884. Irene’s father, Frank Murray, inherited the land and continued to develop the property into what is now called Lyons Lake Restaurant and Bar and Murray’s Beach, Inc. Irene and her late sister, Olga Bruck, inherited the property after their father, Frank Murray, passed away, with Irene managing the dance hall, beach and picnic property and Olga handling the rental cottages located lakeside.

Irene, her three sons and daughter, and her five grandchildren continue to manage the Lyons Lake business, although the rental cabins were sold a number of years ago and are no longer available for rent. Irene can be seen at the admission gate as well as on her lawn tractor, taking care of the scenic grounds and also greeting patrons. The rest of the family assists with the day to day operations of the business.

The restaurant and bar sit lakeside with outdoor dining available Wednesday through Sunday from mid-May to early October. The affordable menu offers a wide selection of foods from appetizers, including amazing chicken wings (a best kept secret) to entrees that include prime steaks, seafood and eclectic homemade specials.

10TH GENERATION FAMILY FARM In 1793, Fritz Mesick, an immigrant from southern Germany, purchased approximately 100 acres in South Schodack. Now, 218 years later, George Mesick and his family are continuing the farming tradition.

Back in 1974, three head of American Bison, (or “buffalo”) made GEM Farms their new home. At that time, GEM Farms was a dairy farm, but George Mesick, an 8th generation farmer, had dreamed of having buffalo.

George Mesick and Sam Mesick George, along with his wife Gerry and sons, David and Jim, continued to grow their farm crops and milk their herd of 220 Holstein cows while the buffalo herd grew to 200 head. Soon after they started selling their buffalo meat from a small chest freezer, they realized they needed a bigger space for more freezers. They now sell their buffalo meat in their on-farm store. A website has broadened the customer base, and they ship meat orders via UPS or Fed Ex. Over the years, demand for buffalo meat has grown, and word of the health benefits it offers has spread. It is a very lean, delicious red meat, low in fat and cholesterol. GEM Farms Buffalo sells all cuts of their buffalo meat including tenderloin, prime rib, steaks, roasts, burger, sausages and organ meats. Their buffalo are pasture raised, and the Mesicks are adamant that they are never fed any commercially processed grains, nor given any hormones or antibiotics.

George, along with son Dave and grandson Sam all manage and work the farm.

George’s daughter Diane helps out where needed, primarily in the farm office.

In addition to the buffalo meat, they also sell their farm grown vegetables and their locally famous sweet corn from July to September. George continues to work full time on the farm, and says he will never retire. He loves the family farm life he lives!

In our case, this will add over $150.00 per year to the $229 we paid in January.

LEGISLATORS OPPOSED TO EXPANSION OF SMALL WATER SOURCES Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature are stating their opposition to a proposed plan by the Environmental Protection Agency to expand the water sources that will be subject to often costly federal review.

Legislators, including Majority Leader Ken Herrington, said the new expanded regulations are unnecessary and will cause new expenses and delays for property owners and businesses.

In addition, the new regulations would apply to municipalities.

Those new expenses and delays cannot be afforded as the country and state deal with a prolonged national recession, said Herrington.

“We cannot afford new and costly federal regulations at a time when so many businesses and property owners are struggling to stay afloat,” said Herrington.

“In addition, these new regulations will mean additional costs for municipalities that maintain ditches and small lakes and ponds,” added Herrington.

The proposal by the EPA would expand the waters the federal government has jurisdiction over from waterways, wetlands, rivers and lakes to minor bodies of water, including ditches, mudflats, sloughs and prairie potholes. Under the context of

For more information about the DAR and eligibility, call Regent Carol Haid at 283-3159. the Clean Water Act section 404-permit program, the owner of operator of a site with any of the listed waters would be required to obtain federal permits before doing routine maintenance, upgrades, mitigation and improvements.

“Anytime a property owner does basic maintenance or upgrades at or near even a small body of water they could be subject to lengthy reviews and expenses. That would be counterproductive, especially since the EPA has not demonstrated a clear environmental need for this expansion,” said Herrington.

Herrington has sent a statement to be included in the comments being gathered by the federal government on the issue. A resolution stating opposition has also been introduced for consideration at the August 9 legislative meeting.

LOONEY’S TUNE Letter to the Editor: Pardon the pun but a recent letter to the editor here by Mark Looney made me do it. He used the tragedy of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster to justify his opposition to Congressman Chris Gibson’s proposal to build the world’s best nuclear power plant here in NY. That’s like suggesting we stop building new state-of-the-art bridges here after the collapse of a 40-year-old bridge in Minneapolis.

Mr. Looney suggested that he believes the residents of our 20th Congressional District prefer wind, solar, tidal and thermal energy sources. Yeh, and the people of the Mojave Desert will gladly trade the solar power they generate for an equivalent value of Hudson River water packed in by camel. Barring the discovery of a practical superconductor, there is no way that any or all of these sources will power the entire country.

Mr. Looney stated: “The world is running out of oil now” with the same conviction reminiscent of Jimmy Carter when he predicted the world supply of oil would run out by 1990.

Mr. Looney went on to decry fracing of natural gas, although it has a proven record of being safe, clean and economical. New York has the largest deposits of shale gas in the country and shale gas is expected to make up half of all natural gas production by 2020. Our known nationwide reserves are enough to meet the consumption demands of the entire country for the next 100 years.

Mr. Looney continued with the dire revelation that we are in the evacuation path of the Yankee nuclear plant in Vermont.

Now that’s a scary thought - when Vermont gets hit with an earthquake and tidal wave, our roads will look like the exodus of a Grateful Dead concert.

Mr. Looney’s manifesto ended with an attack on energy corporations for being “narrow-minded” and “self-interested”.

Maybe he hasn’t heard about G.E. getting away with paying no taxes in exchange for their collaboration with President Obama on his green jobs and energy boondoggle. The winner of the Section 3 Tourney advances to the State Tournament, representing the greater Capital District.

On July 27th, the team defeated District 16 champion, Highland, 14-3 in the first round of the Sectional tournament.

MARY’S & SAMARITAN HOSPITALS OFFER HEALTHY HEARTS WALK St. Mary’s Hospital/Seton Health and Samaritan Hospital/Northeast Health, as part of the Healthy Hearts joint initiative, will hold the next “Just Walk With a Doc” event featuring a one-mile community walk with a cardiologist, Saturday, Aug. 13, 8 10 a.m., Farmer’s Market, Riverfront Park, Troy.

Dr. Robert Benton, of Capital Cardiology, will offer a short educational talk on hypertension, and lead participants in the one-mile walk downtown. Participants will be able to ask medical questions in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

The Just Walk With a Doc program is part of a national initiative designed to educate and encourage physical activity to improve health. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar, elevate mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes.

Additional walks are planned Saturdays, September 10, and October 8, from 8 - 10 a.m., at the Farmer’s Market in Troy. All events are open to the public free of charge. Rain or shine.

CASTLETON KIWANIS 5th ANNUAL CLOVE RUN The Castleton Road Racing Commission in conjunction with the Castleton Kiwanis Club have scheduled the 5th Annual Clove Run races to be held in bucolic Castleton, NY on August 13th, with all proceeds once again going to the Anchor food pantry in Castleton. WHERE TO ENJOY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN EAST GREENBUSH The Town of East Greenbush’s Community and Recreational Services Department would like to notify the residents of the town regarding various recreational activities that are available for all to enjoy. The Town Park, located off of Elliott Road, has three new color coded trails ready to be hiked. If you visit the town website at www.eastgreenbush.org, you will find a map of these trails that you may print out to guide you on your way to exploring 1.75 combined miles of trail. Onderdonk Park, located on Hampton Avenue, is now open Monday through Friday from 10 am until 2 pm. There are picnic tables, two horseshoe pits, three bocce courts, a shuffleboard court and a putting green to practice your golf shots on. For your convenience, there are restroom facilities on the premises. At the Hampton Manor Lakehouse area, there are picnic tables, basketball hoop, playground, and tennis courts—jogging and walking around the lake are highly encouraged. Also, feel free to launch your non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes and rowboats. It’s a natural resource right in our backyard that offers yet another form of exercise for individuals and families to enjoy. PAPSCANEE ISLAND NATURE PRESERVE IN HUDSON VALLEY RIVER RAMBLE The Papscanee Island Nature Preserve will again be among the areas in and around the Hudson River that will be included in the Hudson River Valley Ramble later this month.

The Ramble will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 9:30 a.m. at nature preserves, historic sites and recreational areas along the Hudson River in several counties. The 2010 Ramble marks the twelth year the event is being held at the Preserve.

In recognition of the Ramble, there will be a special guided onehour walk through the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve. Members of the public are invited to attend the walk through the Preserve, which is free of charge.

“The Papscanee Island Nature Preserve is one of the most beautiful areas along the Hudson River and we are excited about showing off the Preserve during the Ramble,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

The Preserve is located on Staats Island Road, just off State Route 9J. Take a right onto Staats Island Road and proceed over the railroad tracks to the parking area at the entrance of the Preserve.

THE FEDERAL FARM BILL IS UP FOR RENEWAL NEXT YEAR It needs a major overhaul so it will help family farms and promote healthier diets.

Family farms continue to disappear at an alarming rate. Most support goes to wealthy investors owning corporate farms.

The average payment for 80% of farmers is $579.

Processing facilities need to be funded so medium size farmers aren’t forced to raise their crops and livestock based on the dictates of a few large corporations.

More funding is needed to preserve farmlands, especially near urban areas where development pressures are great but where much of our food is grown.

Food stamps (SNAP) accounts for two-thirds of Farm Bill funding.

The House Republicans recently voted to gut food stamps, because with the economy in such bad shape, spending has increased to help more households feed their families. The food stamp program, however, is supposed to be a safety net when families are out of work and/or unable to pay their bills.

Revised federal health guidelines urge Americans to eat many more fruits and vegetables. Yet hardly any money in the Farm Bill goes to these healthy foods. Instead, the Farm Bill funds sugar (corn syrup) and fats (soy), resulting in a diet of heavily processed unhealthy food that leads to expensive health problems such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Food stamps benefits need to be raised so households can afford a nutritious diet. Many of the three million New Yorkers who utilize emergency food programs see their food stamps run out way before the month is over.

The House recently voted to slash funding for critical farm conservation and environmental programs. One of the many disasters from Mississippi River flooding has been the creation of the largest dead zone ever (9,400 square miles) where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico as fertilizer, and animal waste runoff from farmlands depletes the oxygen needed for marine life.

The ability for a nation to create the workforce needed to compete in the global economy begins with infants and toddlers.

Literacy and communication skills begin before a baby speaks her first word. Babies are pre-wired to communicate and learn.

They begin to communicate through crying, facial expressions and movement. Fancy curriculum or flash cards are not needed for the development of infant and toddler communication skills.

What is needed are responsive adults.

Learning occurs through the relationship that the infant and toddler has with significant adults in their lives including parents and caregivers. By responding promptly to infants’ and toddlers’ attempts at communication, we teach them that they are important and encourages them to continue to find ways to engage and communicate with those around them. Caregivers have a tremendous affect on helping infants and toddlers learn language and communication skills which set the foundation for all future learning.

I had the opportunity to attend training and become a Certified Trainer with the Program for Infant and Toddler Care and learn the importance of caring relationships that support infants’ and toddlers’ development. An environment where parents and caregivers are supportive, positive and offer rich verbal stimulation is one where children will show advanced language and cognitive development.
