SPAIN ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR SUPERVISOR North Greenbush Councilman Al Spain announced that he is a candidate for the Office of Supervisor. “North Greenbush is poised at the threshold of a new era of commercial development in the Town. We are in a position to lead the rest of the County in growth. It is vitally important that we have a leader who will positively guide that growth in a responsible manner, rather than hinder it,” said Spain.

He added, “After serving the Town for the past four years as a Councilman, I look forward to continuing to work in a nonpartisan manner to tackle the issues that come before the Town Board. I am very proud that I have been able to work closely with Board members of different political parties to address the Town’s fiscal situation without raising taxes, and still manage to improve our delivery of services. Council members Lou Desso, Kelly Hoffman, Joe Bott and I are enrolled in three different political parties, yet those differences disappear when it comes time to tackling the issues that come before the Town Board.”

“I often hear people say, ‘why can’t they just put politics aside and work together?’ That is exactly what the four of us on the Board are doing right now. I hope that all Democrats in North Greenbush will turn out for the primary on September 13th, and cast their vote for me. That will send a strong message in favor of good government”. The East Greenbush Central School District has announced its Board of Education meetings for September 2011. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 14th. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room of the District’s Administration Center (located in the Genet Elementary School on Route 4 in East Greenbush).

The Tuesday, September 27th Board of Education meeting will also be conducted at the Red Mill Elementary School (located at 255 McCullough Place, Rensselaer) at 7:30 p.m.

The Board’s Agendas and Minutes are posted on the District’s website. The Agenda’s appear on the Friday prior to the Board of Education meeting. The Minutes are posted as soon as they are completed and approved by the Board. A complete listing of the Board’s meeting schedule is also cited on the website.

APCSD FREE AND REDUCED MEAL ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES Averill Park Central School District announced a free and reduced price meal policy for Averill Park area school children.

Local school officials have adopted the following family eligibility criteria to assist them in determining eligibility:

The Sand Lake Center for the Arts gallery will exhibit the watercolors of Kristin Woodward thru Sept. 30.

Summer’s end brings us the richly detailed watercolors of Kristin Woodward. Her genre scenes and landscapes are fully naturalistic, but are brought to life with a sense of sparkling light that enlivens each scene.

Kristin’s work shows the ability of the master water colorist to capture both permanence and motion in the same object.

Food Stamp/TANF/FDPIR Households: Households which currently include children who receive Food Stamps or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) must complete an application listing the child’s name, a food stamp, TANF, or FDPIR case number and the signature of an adult household member, or provide a Direct Certification letter from the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Children in the household with the same case number may be included on the same application. Separate applications are required for children in the same household with different case numbers. If the family does not list a food stamp, TANF, or FDPIR case number for all children for whom they are applying, then the application must contain all the information as required for “other households” as described below.

Other Households: Households with incomes the same or below the amount of money listed above for their family size may be eligible for and are urged to apply for free and/or reduced price meals (or free milk). They may do so by filling in the application forms sent home with a letter to parents. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office in each school. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year to Karen Andriano, Food Service Manager, Averill Park CSD, 146 Gettle Rd., Averill Park, NY 12018. The information provided on the application will be confidential and will be used for determining eligibility. The release of information to any program or entity not specifically authorized by the NSLA will require a written consent statement from the parent or guardian. The school district does, however, have the right to verify at any time during the school year the information on the application. If a parent does not give the school this information, the child/children will no longer be able to receive free or reduced price meals. PUBLIC INVITED TO APPLY FOR SEARCH COMMITTEE The Wynantskill CSD Board of Education is seeking volunteers from the community to serve on a Superintendent/Principal Advisory Committee.

The committee, which will be comprised of 10-12 individuals representing various groups within our school community, will give the Board input on selected candidates prior to the Board making a final decision. Those participating on the committee must attend all scheduled meetings.

Community members interested in applying for the committee should complete an application found on the district’s website (www.wynantskillufsd.org) by September 1 and send to the District Clerk in the Superintendent’s Office.

The Board of Education is working closely with Questar III to assist in the search for a new district leader. As you may know, Superintendent Christine Hamill announced her retirement effective December 31, 2011. The Board decided at its July reorganization meeting to restructure its administrative leadership.

Specifically, the Board merged the Superintendent and Principal positions into a single Superintendent/Principal position, changed the Principal position to an Assistant Principal role and separated the business manager duties (from the Superintendent position) by exploring the use of shared services effective December 31, 2011. ~Submitted by, Dan Sherman

SPAIN SUPERVISOR DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY Tuesday, September 13th “COME, FOLLOW ME” On Sunday, August 28, 2011, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will look at the Gospel of Matthew 16:2128. In the sermon titled “Come Follow Me,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will share an understanding of what Jesus means when he extends that invitation to us. What are the sacrifices? What are the rewards? Join us an come to more fully understand what it means to be a disciple and follow Jesus.

The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J, approximately one half mile South of the only traffic light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Children are welcome in worship and following the sermon designated for them, they are invited to engage in self-study activities related to the children’s message.

The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building, 43 Church St. (Route 20,) one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village. Sunday School will resume on September 11 with a Rally Day flair and a picnic after worship to celebrate the beginning of the Sunday School year. CLAY WORKSHOP AT SLCA Sundays at the Center will hold a clay workshop with Barabra Reeley on Sun., Sept. 4 at 1:30pm, $5 pp.

Barbara will demonstrate pinch, coil & slab methods of working in clay.

She will also bring a wheel and demonstrate throwing. Participants will have an oppor-tunity to try clay hand-building methods. Barbara can take pieces and fire them for an additional charge of $35. She will return these to the Center for pickup in the following month.

MUSIC IN THE PARK RESCHEDULED Town of E. Greenbush The band White Water washed out from August 9th and is moved to September 6th at 6 pm. This particular band plays all kinds of music from the 50’s right on up and come highly recommended; so hope to see many of you there. Welcome all line dancers and those who want a fun evening. The concert is at the Onderdonk Memorial Park, located on Hampton Avenue across from the Lake.

BARBARA J. LEHMANN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS East Greenbush Fire Company President Jeffrey Tooker announces the recipients of the Barbara J. Lehmann Memorial Scholarship Program for 2011. Through the Barbara J. Lehmann Memorial Scholarship Program, the East Greenbush Fire Company provides scholarship grants to qualified applicants seeking to advance their education in their chosen field of study. The 2011 recipients are Catheryne Boel, Makenzie Edberg, Katie Schmidt, Kayla Williams, Patrick Forgea, Thomas Gullo, III and Jeffrey Snyder. Each recipient received a Scholarship of $500.00 which was presented during the Fire Company’s August meeting. The East Greenbush Fire Company commends the recipients for their academic achievements and pursuit of higher education.

“HISTORICAL BACKYARD FIELD TRIP” Day trips can be so expensive now, so the Rensselaer County’s Troy Senior Center is offering a field trip as a special service to seniors 60 years of age or older, using our Rensselaer County vans and volunteer drivers. RED LIONS INDIE ROCK GROUP IN CONCERT AT SLCA The Red Lions performed during 2006-2010 in the capital region as a group featuring singer/songwriter Eric Margan and a diverse ensemble of musicians. They’ve evolved in a number of ways, both in line-up and musical style. With the addition of singer/ songwriter Caroline Corrigan, the band has begun to sing 3 and 4-part vocal harmonies and exchange roles of lead vocalist.

Multi-instrumentalist Rick Spataro has gravitated toward playing the drums and Jonnie Baker has joined the band as lead guitarist.

Scott Kellerhouse lives in Ithaca but lends his talents on keyboards, guitar and bass on occasion. The new sound is less orchestral and more rock ‘n’roll- but equally as melodious and sweet. SEAMAN ALLISON COMPLETES NAVY BASIC TRAINING Navy Seaman Recruit Kevin J. Allison, son of Patricia A. and Kevin J. Allison of Averill Park, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Allison completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

“Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

The Library’s Election vote for the 2012 Budget will be held on Thursday, September 8th at the library from 9 am to 9 pm. Registered voters in the town of East Greenbush general elections are eligible to vote.

A second proposal on the ballot is the election of one trustee for a five-year term beginning January 2012. The candidates running for this position are Lisa Fox and Jennifer O’Brien.

Ms. Fox and her family have been residents of East Greenbush since 1995. A graduate of Albany Law School, she is employed as an Associate Attorney with the NYS Office of General Services, focusing on administrative and contract law. She has been a long-time member of the Friends of the East Greenbush Library who has volunteered with her family to work at the Friends’ book sales. She recognizes the critical role that the Library plays in fostering literacy and access to knowledge.

Ms. O’Brien is a writer and educator who currently runs an adult education program in Albany. A graduate from the East Greenbush schools, she has also been an English teacher at the Kingston High School and worked as an editor and continues to do freelanceing writing for many publications. More recently, Jennifer graduated from the Rensselaer County Chamber’s Leadership Institute Class in 2011. She pledges to be an active member of the Board who will work to ensure that the library remains a focal point in our community.

Letter to the Editor: Over the past few years the Educational system of the United States has come under increasing attack for dropping test scores. Many people are quick to blame the teachers for doing a poor job rather than blaming the students themselves. Now I am very well aware that there are certain instances where a substantial teacher is to blame but most teachers a very good at their jobs and when they are allowed to, they are excellent in transferring their knowledge to their students. However, there are an ever-increasing number of students who wish nothing more than to impede this action and only hurt themselves and other students who actual wish to learn by doing so. During the school year I had the economics explained to me of what these disruptive students are costing the school. The school has to pay for extra hall monitors as well as extra hours for teachers to stay after school to watch them for when they are in detention and this cost far out weighs the amount of money schools spend on classes for students who excel in certain classes like the arts and sciences.

The law has yielded support, happiness, as well as protest and criticism.

The Constitution states all men are created equal. Our country is known for rights, freedom and equality for all people.

However, only six of fifty states will marry same sex couples. I ask those who are opposed to this law, why should people’s sexuality, their preference in lifestyle make them unworthy of the same rights others have? Massachusetts is another state that allows gay marriage. It seems pointless to fight same sex marriage in New York if it’s allowed next door in Massachusetts.

Gay people in New York can drive at most, a few hours to get married and then return to the state.

I am a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church, an alter server and part of their youth ministry. I believe in God, heaven, hell, and the Bible. However, I disagree with the Catholic view on same sex marriages. According to the Bible, God made it so men and women would marry before him and make families together. To go against this with two men or women is thought of as sinful. I disagree. How is it wrong to commit through marriage to someone you love? The God I believe in would not send people to hell for this. I believe God may not have intended for same sex couples, but I don’t think he condemns them for their sexuality. I believe he loves them as much as he loves heterosexuals.

How, as a heterosexual, does same sex marriage affect you?

How do the choices of those you do not know, negatively impact your life? Why should you enjoy the luxury of marrying someone you love if they are of the opposite sex while those who want to marry someone of the same sex aren’t allowed?

With so many important issues to resolve nationally and internationally, fighting people’s right to happiness is not helping. WHAT PUTS THE “ACHE” IN HEADACHE?

Letter to the Editor: I cannot believe how far this world has digressed. Today, because of nosey, cold and selfish neighbors; along with small town politics, my 85 year old mother-in-law cannot even die with dignity. For 85 years, Isabelle has been a tax paying respected citizen of Rensselaer, now in her last days of her life, Rensselaer is kicking her to the curb. Why? Because her daughter cannot afford to put her in a nursing home. This same daughter quit her job to take care of her mom, and spent her savings to build an addition where her mom could live her last days in peace. Today, Isabelle’s 2 daughters and son take care of her; not to mention daily visits from Hospice. Isabelle has Pulmonary Fibrosis and is on Oxygen 24/7.

The town is demanding that demolition start in Isabelle’s home, demanding that those amenities like a stove, refrigerator and sink be removed. Hospice has written a letter to Rensselaer saying that this demolition would be extremely detrimental to Isabelle’s health. Do the cold hearted neighbors care? Nope, get the stuff out “along with THE OLD LADY” and preserve our beautiful neighborhood full of hateful hypocrites.

Isabelle’s daughter has hired a lawyer, money unnecessarily spent to fight against cold hearts. I hope these cold neighbors and this cold town never have to take care of a loved one, because your home is off limits and they will have to ship them off to an Old Folks Home even if they don’t want to go. Is this still America, do we really own our houses? SPORTS AVERILL PARK BOOSTER CLUB IS LOOKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

A.P. ROADRUNNERS CROSS COUNTRY REGISTRATION The Averill Park Road Runners youth club is now taking registrations for the 2011 Cross Country season. The club is open to anyone ages 7-14 who likes to run, play games and have FUN! You do NOT have to be a resident of the Averill Park School District. Practices will be held Monday & Thursday evenings at Butler Park with several meets throughout the season. The season will start September 1st and end with the Junior Olympics in November.

The Averill Park Booster Club is working hard to bring back athletic programs that were eliminated as part of the recent school budget process. Many in our community have benefited from these programs, or have children or grandchildren currently participating on high school sports teams, reaping the rewards that come from participation in athletics.

Consider this (from the Averill Park Central District website): The athletic department saw the elimination of all freshman sports, indoor track and several assistant coaches. These sports and assistant coaching positions can only be considered for reinstatement pending the availability of fund, to be raised through community fundraising efforts.

The Averill Park Central School District supports community efforts to raise funds to reinstate any and all sports programs and coaching positions. Legally, for a sport or coaching position to be reinstated, the entire cost of the program must be donated to the school district prior to the start of the season.

2011-2012 SPORTING LICENSES AVAILABLE New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced that 2011-2012 hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) may be purchased beginning Monday, August 15. Licenses and permits can be purchased at one of DEC’s 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses can also be ordered by mail or by telephone and via the internet at www.dec.ny.gov. The 2011-2012 sporting licenses are valid beginning October 1, 2011, through September 30, 2012.

Additionally, anyone – not just hunters and anglers – can help feed the hungry by contributing to the Venison Donation Program at all license issuing outlets. Individuals should inform the license sales agent that they want to make a donation of $1 or more to support the program. Since 1999, the Venison Donation Coalition has paid for the processing of more than 330 tons of highly nutritious venison, the equivalent of 2.8 million meals served.

EVIDENCE OF FIELD INSPECTION IN THE BID PACKAGE (statement signed by proposer is acceptable) MATERIAL TYPE AND USAGE Contractor shall determine the appropriate types of materials to meet the requirements of this bid and shall submit sufficient product information for the commissioners to properly evaluate the proposed roofing system. Additionally, the Contractor shall provide a unit breakdown of all proposed materials.

EQUIPMENT Contractor is responsible for supplying all equipment to perform the work outlined in this bid.

SURETY BONDING REQUIREMENT Proposed bid is to include a bid Bond. In addition a performance bond in the full amount of the project costs.

INSURANCE The Contractor shall secure and maintain, throughout the duration of the Contract with the Fire District, insurance protecting the Fire District against the hazards and risks of loss in such types and amounts as hereinafter set forth.

The companies issuing such policies and the form thereof shall be acceptable to the commissioners, and the Eagle Mills Fire District # 1 shall be named as an additional insured on each such policy.

Copies of such insurance policies or certificates evidencing the required insurance coverage shall be filed with the Fire District. The Fire District will require the Contractor to take such steps as are necessary to remove the threat of cancellation or to procure new policies meeting the requirements set forth herein.

No work shall be performed for the Fire District except when policies providing the required insurance coverage are in full effect. The coverages required of the Contractor are as follows:

She loves everyone, she does not understand why she is not allowed to play with my dogs. They do the puppy-bow to her and she cannot play because of her stitches. Her bleeding disorder is not allowing any play. She has the very best personality and adores life. She wants so much to be part of a family and be loved. I honestly cannot remember a dog like her that I rescued who has absolutely no issues. She is the most loveable little dog. Look at her face and see her personality. Her blood disorder will be under control when her surgery site heals. She had surgery to remove a lump that surfaced from the insertion of a microchip. At that time, it was unknown of her clotting disorder. She is a total doll. My nickname to her is 'sweetie'
