RED LIONS INDIE ROCK GROUP IN CONCERT AT SLCA

The Red Lions performed during 2006-2010 in the capital region as a group featuring singer/songwriter Eric Margan and a diverse ensemble of musicians. They’ve evolved in a number of ways, both in line-up and musical style. With the addition of singer/ songwriter Caroline Corrigan, the band has begun to sing 3 and 4-part vocal harmonies and exchange roles of lead vocalist.

Multi-instrumentalist Rick Spataro has gravitated toward playing the drums and Jonnie Baker has joined the band as lead guitarist.

Scott Kellerhouse lives in Ithaca but lends his talents on keyboards, guitar and bass on occasion. The new sound is less orchestral and more rock ‘n’roll- but equally as melodious and sweet. They’re having a lot of fun playing music so come hear them play their versions of familiar songs, as well as the great originals from their CD’s Midnight Book and Human Rhythms on Fri., Sept. 9 at 7:30pm and tickets are $12 adults and $8 under 18. Jennifer E. O’Brien is seeking a seat on the East Greenbush Library Board of Trustees, in the Town-wide election on Thursday, September 8th. Ms. O’Brien is a writer and educator who grew up in East Greenbush and graduated from Columbia High School. She continued her education at Stony Brook University and The College of St. Rose, and holds a Masters Degree in English. While on faculty at Kingston High School, Jennifer was one of 14 teachers nationwide to earn a Fulbright Scholarship, and completed an 8 week inter-cultural study program of Southeast Asia in Vietnam and Thailand.

Since returning to East Greenbush to raise her own family, Ms. O’Brien has taught writing and English literature at The College of St. Rose and HVCC, and has run multiple summer writing and poetry programs, as well as a preparatory institute for SAT candidates. In her current position, she directs adult education services for a large statewide union. She is a 2011 graduate of the Leadership Institute run by the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. O’Brien is a frequent freelance contributor for the Times Union and several monthly publications. She was the first editor of the local weekly Greenbush Life, and was instrumental in developing its original style, format, and staffing.

Ms. O’Brien and her husband Lewis Dubuque are raising their two children as active library patrons. She particularly appreciates the extensive children’s programming offered at the library, and looks forward to working with the Board of Trustees to maintain the library’s high level of quality services, and promote efficiency in its operations.

Voting for this volunteer position will take place at the East Greenbush Library on Thursday, September 8th, from 9 am to 9pm.

“DEMOCRAT” IS REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE Letter to the Editor: As we approach another election in North Greenbush, a candidate for Supervisor is talking about being “bi-partisan” while asking Democrats to support him in a party primary. Trouble is nowhere in his announcement did he tell voters he is the REPUBLICAN candidate for Supervisor and that if he takes the Democratic nomination away from his Democratic Party endorsed opponent, he will leave voters no choice in the November election.

It’s hard to imagine that a true Democrat would be running as a Republican and then neglect to tell Democratic voters he’s the Republican nominee! Yet, Al Spain did just that in his letter last week. He also glossed over his record as a member of the Republican majority on the town board, working against the Democratic Supervisor on so many issues, including the no bid contract that cost taxpayers $30,000 to redo the Comprehensive Plan to his liking. He also failed to mention the $35,000 State Grant he and his majority refuse to take, because they don’t like the folks who worked to get the grant.

This candidate supported a budget that took thousands of dollars from Highway Dept PILOT funds and used it to restore General Fund cuts in the Supervisor’s budget. After an error caused the salary of Highway Superintendent Premo to be reduced, he played games with the man’s salary until public pressure caused his majority to correct the mistake. He appointed two politically connected non residents as town lawyers and ignored two qualified town residents seeking the jobs. He also voted to fire the Comptroller and Youth Director for political purposes and maneuvered his brother into a paid spot on the Planning Board.

So, Democrats have a choice between the GOP candidate for Supervisor and the Democratic candidate. We live in Upstate so we know power outages and weather events happen no matter what the season. For the safety of your entire household, please make preparations in advance of need.

In the event of a town-wide emergency, it is important to note that the Tsatsawassa Fire House is the Town of Nassau approved Red Cross shelter. This shelter is located near the intersection of Fire House Road and US 20 in Brainard.

In a town-wide emergency, it may be necessary for the Town to declare a local State of Emergency. This act allows for increased executive authority to coordinate and direct the protection of the safety of Nassau’s residents. If a declaration is issued, it will be communicated to the media along with information on available local assistance. It is extremely important that you are able to access this information. Please be sure to have a fully charged, battery powered radio or television, available at all times to allow you to access emergency updates. In the event you are utilizing your cell phone for emergency contacts, please be sure to send text messages or similar communication to prevent lines from being too congested.

If you or someone in your family has special medical needs that require power, such as oxygen equipment, please be sure to contact your local fire company in advance of an emergency so that they are aware of your situation. This will assist their efforts to reach out to community members to check their status and needs in an emergency.

The kindness of Nassau’s residents is also a vital component in emergency response. If you know of neighbors in need, please be sure to check on them. Working together during past weather events, we have shown how effective we can be as a community. There are many resources available on how to prepare for all types of disasters. The key to keeping your household safe is to be prepared. Please take the time to explore these resources in advance of need. In addition to Internet resources, there are materials available at Nassau Town Hall to assist your emergency planning.

Finally, please don’t forget to plan ahead for your pets as well.

They will need your assistance and protection in an emergency.

On Saturday, September 10th, the annual Nassaufest celebration will take place at the Village Commons Park on John Street in the village of Nassau. Scheduled from 11 am to 3 pm, the event features a kid’s carnival with kid-friendly games of skill. Each player is guaranteed a “Nassaubuck” just for playing, more if they win. “Bucks” are redeemable for great prizes and school supplies. Free activities include: musical entertainment

RESPONSE TO LIBERAL NONSENSE Letter to the Editor: I am insulted that Mr. Crawmer suggests that most liberals don’t pay taxes. Disagreements are a good part of our democracy. Accusing any religion, ethnic group, or political leaning of being corrupt promotes hate with no facts or justification. Any disagreement that relies on unverifiable accusations toward someone with opposing views is becoming the norm in America and I find it repulsive.

My letter was titled “Cutting Taxes Does Not Create Jobs”. I said that demand for a product or services created jobs and taxes used to improve transportation, education and create a safe and legal environment improve a business ability to satisfy that demand.

Living in a democracy I accept the fact that not all tax money is spent as I would like. I totally agree with secretary of defense Robert Gates that the defense budget could be cut. As he stated we spend more on our navy than the next 13 countries combined and 11 of those 13 are our allies. However if the majority wants to spend this amount we need to fund the spending with tax money.

Our tax cuts for many years have been coupled with unfunded spending increases. If there is no funding from income taxes a progressive tax system where those with an ability to pay get taxed then regressive taxes like property or sales taxes and various fees are needed. No Child left behind is a good example of unfunded spending that raised school taxes. Who was the liberal that created that? CLAY WORKSHOP AT SLCA Sundays at the Center will hold a clay workshop with Barabra Reeley on Sun., Sept. 4 at 1:30pm, $5 pp.

Barbara will demonstrate pinch, coil & slab methods of working in clay. She will also bring a wheel and demonstrate throwing.

DEDICATED TO EDUCATING AMERICAN CITIZENS Letter to the Editor: September 5th is Jury Rights Day. Americans have the right to jury nullification of bad law because of the determination of a man of conscience. On September 5th, 1670 Quaker William Penn of London was arrested, pled not guilty, and subsequently argued against Englands Conventicle Acts, which outlawed the practice of religions other than the Church of England.

The Judge instructed Jurors of the case to find Penn guilty.

The Jurors’ refusal to enforce what they considered bad law led to the Court jailing and withholding food and water from them.

Some of those jurors appealed their fines and imprisonment, and a higher court confirmed the right of the Jurors to base their verdict on their best judgment and conscience. Even though there was a law against freedom of religion, the high court held that juries could not be required to enforce any law they thought was wrong.

This ruling established protection for the jury, including that they are not required to give a reason for the verdict they render, and firmly established the right of jurors to refuse to accept bad government laws. This refusal of bad law is called jury nullification. Through jury nullification, people can control their government by refusing to allow bad laws to be enforced.

William Penn later came to Colonial America and founded Pennsylvania. Penns trial, along with the 1735 trial in New York of publisher John Peter Zenger for publishing unlawful criticism of the royal governor of New York colony, helped establish our legal traditions of freedom of religion and speech. In both cases, rebellious, conscientious jurors voted for acquittal against the law and the instructions of the judge.

Jurors in America today still have the authority to nullify bad laws. This authority is our peaceful protection to stop corrupt government servants from violating our rights.

Most Judges today do not inform their juries of their right to nullify laws with their verdict. There is an organization called the Fully Informed Jury Association (www.fija.org) which is dedicated to educating American citizens of this little known freedom. ~Robert E. Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer.

As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our August 9, 2011 meeting.

Along with detailing issues considered at the legislative meeting, I have received numerous calls regarding the proposed asphalt plant at the Port of Rensselaer. Residents are concerned about traffic and environmental impacts, particularly in the Fort Crailo, lower Broadway and South Street areas. Residents are also concerned their feelings regarding the plant have not been adequately addressed. I have written to the city planning director requesting the scheduling of an additional public comment session on the proposed plant to ensure all concerns are heard. In my letter to the city planning director, I asked that the developers of the proposed asphalt plant deal with the concerns of the residents living in the neighborhoods near the site of the project. In particular, concerns about potential increases of traffic in nearby neighborhoods due to the closure of a bridge near State Route 9J should be addressed.

The Legislature has been working hard to reduce expenses.

Recently, a bid of the county insurance policy netted a savings of $900,000 over three years. Spending has also been reduced in legislative offices. Following a bi-partisan review by county lawmakers, the purchase of electronic tablets, specifically iPads, was approved to reduce the costs of paper, printing, copying, staff time and related expenses. It is expected the new measure will save $40,000 over the next three years and more in the years to follow. I joined my colleagues in requesting repeal of a state law adopted in 2010 that requires widows or widowers seeking to sell or transfer a boat, trailer, all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile to seek approval from a surrogate or probate court.

Previously, such transactions could be conveniently handled in a local DMV office.

Normally, regular monthly meetings of the County Legislature take place on the second Tuesday, but Primary Day takes place on the second Tuesday of September. To accommodate voters participating in the primary, the next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Wednesday, September 14, 2011.

SCHODACK REPUBLICANS SELECT FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE SLATE FOR 2011 GOP Backs Dowds, Curtis, Kenney, Conlin, Lubbers and Peter The Schodack Republican Committee has endorsed a slate of candidates who will continue with the fiscally conservative policies that produced an upgrade in the town’s bond rating and protected the town’s quality of life.

Committee members endorsed Supervisor Dennis Dowds, Councilman Frank Curtis, Councilman Mike Kenney, Town Clerk Donna Conlin, Receiver of Taxes Kathy Lubbers and Town Justice Paul Peter.

The Schodack GOP team was supported by a strong showing on nominating petitions, with nearly 500 signatures collected on nominating petitions. Along with the Republican nomination, Dowds, Curtis, Kenney, Conlin, Lubbers and Peter also received the support of the Conservative and Independence parties.

Along with endorsing the re-election of Dowds, Curtis, Kenney, Conlin, Lubbers and Peter, the town GOP also supported the nomination for re-election of Surrogate Court Judge Chris Hummel and Sheriff Jack Mahar, and the election of Joel Abelove for District Attorney. Schodack Republicans are looking to build on the successes of 2010 which saw the committee support the election of Congressman Chris Gibson and Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, along with other Republican victories. Kenney was also elected to the Town Board in 2010 in a special election.

Not that I do not support the fire stations, I do, but the fire station in West Sand Lake already, has nothing wrong with it. I understand that there were problems with it being too small and older than some of the others in the area.

Honestly, though, thirty-five years old is not that old. Most of the houses in the district are around sixty and some even older than that. It would be nice to build a new fire station, but right now is not the time, and it’s nice to see that people in the area know that even if they want a new fire station. We all know the money is just not there to fund it, especially when our schools have had to make cuts in classes and courses. I don’t think it’s right if we can’t afford to pay for education, but we can spend all our money on a five million dollar fire station?

If we can’t raise our taxes a little to help out children’s education, than we can’t raise our taxes to pay for a brand new fire station. LOCAL & NATIONWIDE EDUCATION CUTS Letter to the Editor: This year, I noticed controversy not just locally, but all over the country centered on school budgeting.

The government was making educational cuts nationwide, and it definitely had a strong effect on many people- I saw this when I attended a couple of Averill Park’s budget meetings. As always, some of the first things to be considered for removal from the curriculum were the arts, language, and even a couple sports as well as many teachers’ jobs.

These things are being rapidly cut from many schools around the nation because the government politicians have been more focused on overseas wars and getting re-elected than the quality of education in their own schools. Watching the news, I saw the government spending all their time arguing over the debt ceiling and whether to raise it (which does seem to defeat the point of having a debt ceiling at all), so they could fund wars and pay other countries what they owe, and meanwhile we, the students, are stuck with a smaller budget.

I think it is vital for students to get the best education they can, and that includes the opportunity to be schooled in the arts. LABOR DAY Letter to the Editor: Labor Day; a day many American’s celebrate with parties, picnics, and parades. Labor Day marks the end of the summer and the start of a new school year for many.

Observed on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is a day to remember and acknowledge the contributions the labor force has had on the success and prosperity of our nation. The holiday was created during the labor movement in the late 19th century but wasn’t established as a federal holiday until 1894. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th 1882 in New York City with a grand parade when approximately 10,000 workers took an unpaid holiday to march in the very first Labor Day parade.

HISTORY, CRAFTS & ENTERTAIN. AT CRAILO FAIRE On Saturday, September 10th, Crailo State Historic Site and Friends of Fort Crailo present Harvest Faire, an event with something for everyone in the family! The rules about getting your driver’s license are different in each state. In Texas, residents are allowed to get their permit when they turn fifteen, but they have to hold their permit until they are at least sixteen. In New York, residents have to wait until they are sixteen just to get their permit.

Then they are required to hold it for at least six months until they can take their first crack at the driver’s test. I don’t believe this is fair, not to mention extremely inconvenient. It’s hard for our parents to drive us all over the place, as if they don’t have enough to do already. As we grow older, we have more responsibilities, and we are in need of transportation more frequently. It is necessary for kids to save up for college while they are still in high school, and if we have our license at a younger age, then we can get to and from a job. If we don’t have a driver’s license, then having a job as a teenager is almost impossible. If you have your driver’s license at a younger age, you can help your parents run errands and shuttle your siblings around. The main problem that people have with teenagers having their license is that teenagers are sometimes careless drivers. However, what people don’t think about is adults are also careless at times... we see adults on their phones all the time. Sure there are some risks of having teens on the road, but there are some adults out there who are even more reckless than teenagers. There is now talk about a new law requiring sixteen year olds to hold their permit until they are seventeen. I say that we change the law so you can get your permit at fifteen and your license at sixteen. LOCAL LIBRARIES NEED OUR SUPPORT

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the August 9, 2011 legislative meeting.

With increased budget pressures due to the ongoing recession and increases in state mandates, the Legislature has placed an increased emphasis on cost-cutting measures. Recently, our comprehensive re-bid of the county insurance policy generated a savings of $900,000 over three years, bringing county insurances costs lower than in the early 1990s.

We have also reduced legislative budgets and rejected numerous requests for spending for new equipment and services in recent years. To enhance these efforts at cost-cutting, we instituted a bi-partisan effort to explore new ways to reduce spending.

After several months of consideration by legislators from both sides, we approved a new cost-cutting measure. The new measure involves utilizing electronic tablets, specifically iPads, to replace the voluminous amounts of paper generated in legislative offices, along with mail, printing and copying.

We expect the move will generate a savings of at least $40,000 over the next three years. The savings increase when staff time is factored in.

Legislators also joined County Clerk Frank Merola in requesting repeal of a state law adopted in 2010 that requires widows or widowers seeking to sell or transfer a boat, trailer, all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile to seek approval from a surrogate or probate court. Previously, such transactions could be conveniently handled in a local DMV office.

County lawmakers also joined in recognizing members of the District Attorney’s office and Troy Police Department for their role in the successful prosecution of Michael Mosley, who had been charged with a double homicide that occurred in 2002.

We also recognized members of the county Probation Department, including probation officers Colleen Burns and Kelly Miazga, who helped determine the need for DNA samples that led to Mosley’s conviction.

Letter to the Editor: With the tough economic times that we are experiencing, it is important to cut back on our personal spending as well as our government spending. However, that does not mean cutting funding for our local libraries. When we cut funding through tax cuts we end up doing more damage than good.

The most important thing about a library is that it’s open to everyone. There are no fees or memberships, which keeps it available for lower class Americans struggling to make ends meet. One of the resources provided are computers. A computer is essential in the search for a job when unemployment is so high. In many cases employers require that applications be submitted via the internet. However without access to a computer, this is impossible. Schools also require students to have computer access to complete assignments online. In many cases the school computers are not available, forcing students to find another means of completing their homework. Even I have used a library computer to do homework when mine was broken.

Libraries provide access to the greatest learning tool a person can have; books. They have books for all ages, in all sizes, and genres. Books are essential to learning and education, helping children to become the future of tomorrow. Anything can be found in the pages of a book, as long as we have access to them.

Lastly, Libraries provide free forms of entertainment including, DVDs, CDs, community events, and classes. All of these things are positive on the community and provide a safe place to spend time, especially for teens. For a family cutting corners, the savings of a library can make all the difference.

THE JOY OF PAYING TAXES! Letter to the Editor: Response to Mr. Crawmer’s letter 8/11/ 11. It appears Mr. Crawmer is too smart for all you Liberal Self Serving state workers. You’ve had your hand in our wallets for too long now. You all make me sick, especially the State Police, aren’t you supposed to “Protect & Serve”, it’s not for you to self serve to the things the rest of us pay for, roads, government, ...police! As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the August 9, 2011 legislative meeting.

We joined with County Clerk Frank Merola in asking for a change in a state law that has been inconveniencing widows and widowers. Prior to 2010, widows and widowers could sell or transfer a variety of vehicles, including boats, trailers, ATVs and snowmobiles registered in the name of their spouse.

Unfortunately, the new state law requires for a widow or widower to seek approval in either surrogate or probate court.

This causes inconvenience to a surviving spouse and adds expenses to an already crowded court system.

County Clerk Merola reports he has received a number of complaints regarding the new state law. We agree with County Clerk Merola that the best solution is to repeal the 2010 state law and go back to the original standards. Our resolution will be sent to state officials for consideration.

The Legislature has worked in recent years to reduce spending wherever possible. We have reduced spending in legislative offices and our re-bid of the county insurance policy will result in a savings of $900,000 over three years. We continued those efforts, agreeing to use electronic tablets, specifically iPads, for use to reduce the amount of paper, printing, copying and postage in legislative offices. The change follows other municipalities who have made a similar switch and is expected to generate a savings of $40,000 over the next three years.

Following reports about more safety concerns on an area bridge, we asked the state to review safety conditions on bridges carrying motorists over the Hudson and Mohawk rivers into Rensselaer County.

We were also pleased to appoint two District 2 residents, Jeff Tooker of East Greenbush and Lee Crosier of North Greenbush, to the Rensselaer County Emergency Radio Communications Committee.

I am excited and honored to announce my candidacy for East Greenbush Receiver of Taxes, and would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and my family. My husband Kip and I have been residents of East Greenbush for over 20 years. We have three children who we have been proud to raise and educate here in town. Our daughter Kara is a graduate of Columbia High School and is a senior at the College of Saint Rose. Our son Alec is a sophomore at Columbia and our youngest son Austin is in seventh grade at Goff Middle School.

I have years of business management experience that have prepared me to serve as Receiver of Taxes. My husband and I have been business owners in East Greenbush for 20 years. I worked as office manager for our business while raising our children. As office manager, I have been responsible for every aspect of the business operation, including employee payroll, customer invoicing, financial summaries and preparation of all tax documents. I earned an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Hudson Valley Community College, and I am currently completing my Bachelor’s of Science in Business through Empire Business College.

As your Receiver of Taxes, I will be responsive and accessible to the people. In addition to the current services, I would like to implement extended workday hours and Saturday hours, credit card and online payments for taxes, and Notary Public services.

Like many East Greenbush residents, I am concerned about the future of our town, the high taxes and the town debt, which has reached an historic high and caused town finances to be reduced to junk bond status. THE EQ OF LIBERALISM Letter to the Editor: There’s a big difference between being intelligent and being devious. Both can lead to tremendous success and indeed intelligence plays a large part in being successfully devious. But being devious has no roll in being intelligent.

When I hear that Liberals think Barack Obama is extremely intelligent, I think it’s time to provide them a little more perspective. Some twenty years ago, I found myself being told I was wrong by so many people so often that I was being consumed by self doubt. I was finding it difficult to make business decisions involving investment risks. I had a friend who, when disagreeing with me about politics back then, asked if I ever considered the possibility that I could be wrong. I was shocked and said of course. I continually engaged in introspection, that internal debate that we humans employ to form judgments. Didn’t he?

In order to help me to decide if I should continue to find my own way or if I should simply submit to the status quo that I thought was wrong, I submitted myself to an IQ test at a MENSA membership drive. The results gave me the confidence to invest in my own business and ignore the voices of defeat around me. Those voices are still there and in fact have become amplified.

Some time ago while listening to WGY radio in the morning, the host interviewed an author of a book that challenged the validity of intelligence. His book was about an Emotional Quotient, or EQ, that he thought was more important to human development. He used the tragic example of Bobby Fisher the chess genius, to bolster his flawed theory. People of all stripes are capable of losing their minds so I found his book to be a waste of paper. But the real tragedy of promoting such a theory is that it empowers people to base life’s decisions on their emotions, without engaging in a moment of introspection.

That, in my opinion, explains why we have so many Liberals in elected positions today. It is just so quick and easy to manipulate peoples’ emotions in order to win an election. AVERILL PARK CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT BUS ROUTES 2011-12 The following is a brief description of the school bus routes for the Averill Park Central School District for the 2011-2012 school year.

The routes will provide parents and students with school bus numbers, the daily route area of each, and the time the bus leaves to start the route. AUTHOR PRESENTS ALBANY IN THE AGE OF REVOLUTION Local historian Warren Roberts will discuss his new book “A Place in History: Albany in the Age of Revolution, 1775-1825” at 7pm Wednesday, September 7, in the Sand Lake Town Library’s William Kennedy Room. The library’s Book Group invites the public to enjoy this free slide presentation and discussion about Albany’s pivotal role in the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the construction of the Erie Canal.

Roberts has been a member of the History Department of the University of Albany since 1963. A Distinguished Teaching Professor, he is well known locally for his interesting lectures on Tiffany Windows in the Capital District and other aspects of the history of Albany. He has also written several books on French revolutionary artists. The author will have copies of his books for sale at the event. RECYCLING: IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE Letter to the Editor: More often than not, we find ourselves throwing away water bottles, cereal boxes, food containers and the list goes on. Simply because there wasn’t a recycle bin, or we were just too lazy to find one. We do this thinking one more bottle or can isn’t going to harm the environment. However, when everyone, everyday is throwing away “one more bottle” the piles in the landfills will begin to stack up. Roughly 50 billion plastic water bottles end up in U.S. landfills each year, that’s 140 million everyday! In fact when you lay them end to end, it’s enough to reach China. That’s only water bottles, imagine all of the other recyclable products that are thrown away each year.

The numbers begin to skyrocket It’s time people begin to realize how fragile our little planet is, and that with nearly 7 billion people on the planet, we can’t afford to be lazy. And when it comes to recycling, the immediate thought is “hassle,” but there are several ways that recycling can be made easy, it just takes a few habitual and attitude changes. One great way to start is to have a separate bin in the kitchen for recycling cans, bottles, papers and boxes. This makes it much easier to recycle, also it will help you remember to recycle, since we often tend to forget.

Secondly, be sure to sign up for your garbage company’s recycling program, this makes it easier than going to a recycling center. It may possibly cost a little extra money, but if it does, just know it’s for a good cause: to help out the planet we live on. Additionally, redeem your bottles and cans at the grocery store, they’re worth 5 cents each, remember. Recycling is a minute, and virtually no cost way of providing aid to the environment. In doing so we can help reduce the staggering amount of trash that ends up in landfills everyday. Besides, thousands of years from now, it’s not garbage that we want future generations to find in between layers of rock. AVERILL PARK BOOSTER CLUB IS LOOKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The Averill Park Booster Club is working hard to bring back athletic programs that were eliminated as part of the recent school budget process. Many in our community have benefited from these programs, or have children or grandchildren currently participating on high school sports teams, reaping the rewards that come from participation in athletics.

Consider this (from the Averill Park Central District website): The athletic department saw the elimination of all freshman sports, indoor track and several assistant coaches. These sports and assistant coaching positions can only be considered for reinstatement pending the availability of fund, to be raised through community fundraising efforts.

The Averill Park Central School District supports community efforts to raise funds to reinstate any and all sports programs and coaching positions. Legally, for a sport or coaching position to be reinstated, the entire cost of the program must be donated to the school district prior to the start of the season.

The Melvin Roads American Legion Baseball team completed a very successful 2011 season.

The team compiled an overall record of 24 wins and 11 losses. This group of fine young men were led by Coaches Marc Peluso, Matt Murphy, and Curtis Nobles. These coaches all played and coached on previous Melvin Roads Championship teams. The character of this team fed off the determination and desire of the coaching staff. The players on this team never quit as evidenced by their several come from behind victories. The players meshed into a very cohesive unit showing respect on and off the baseball field.

Significant highlights for the season included a 2nd place finish in the prestigious Blue and Gold Tournament. The team compiled a 5-2 tournament record falling in the championship game to Gibbsboro, New Jersey 11-6. Another second place finish in the Saratoga Coopers Cave Tournament with a 6-2 record left Melvin Roads still searching for a tournament championship.

Lastly, the team participated in the New York State District 3 Tournament in late July. Once again, the team fell just short of a tournament championship by losing the championship game to Kingston 10-8.

This year’s team was led by Christian Brown with a .438 batting average. Christian played 2 seasons with Melvin Roads and will now take his baseball skills to Ithaca College. The team’s primary catcher, Matt Kasper, hit .358 and was a defensive stalwart behind the plate.

The future is very bright for the Melvin Roads baseball team as they prepare for 2012. Ten players return led by Rookie of the Year, A.J. Maney, who compiled a .396 batting average and a 6-0 pitching record. The team will also welcome back fleet footed center fielder John Stanley .353 batting average and multi-talented Jonas Godell who compiled a .347 batting average and a stellar 3-0 pitching record. First baseman Ian Bennett will be looked upon to continue his strong hitting and steady first base performance. The defense will rely on sure handed Zeb Gaston and Greg Ruddy. Matt Raymond and Christian Maldonado will anchor a very talented pitching staff.

Thriving cities are great places to live, but they need a healthy surrounding countryside to provide fresh air, water, and food.

Easy access to natural places is often cited as an important quality in rankings of “livable” cities.

The Associated Press recently reported that “animals across the world are fleeing global warming by heading north much faster than they were less than a decade ago” (Times Union, August 19, 2011, p. A7). If human climate refugees follow suit, our downstate neighbors may soon put tremendous growth pressure on our still largely rural area. All residents of our area will benefit if we have had the foresight to protect significant tracts of open space for recreation, agriculture, wildlife habitat, and the refreshing of air and water.

RECKLESS DRIVING DECISIONS CAN BE DEADLY Letter to the Editor: Driving can be deadly when you make reckless decisions, and not only for the one making the mistakes.

I am a new driver in Averill Park, and I’m noticing a lot of poor driving conduct while I’m learning how to drive. I usually follow the speed limit. As a result, I am constantly being tailgated by impatient drivers. I understand that they’re in a hurry, but it’s extremely dangerous for everyone. It only takes one thing, like a child chasing a ball into the street, to cause an accident.

I have witnessed many poor driving situations. For example, I have been passed on a road with double yellow lines near a blind turn. Had there been a car coming the other way, there would have been a pretty bad accident. Luckily, no one was coming and we all drove away fine. Driving unsafely like that can have severe consequences.

It is getting harder and harder for teenagers to get their licenses.

Many of us are decent drivers and we fail, often more than once. However, some of these reckless adults are still driving on the streets putting many in danger.

People around you can suffer the consequences of other’s mistakes; suffer because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. The vote upon such proposition shall be by machine or absentee ballot. The hours during which the polls shall be kept open shall be from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. prevailing time or for as long thereafter as necessary to enable qualified voters who are in the polling place at 9:00 p.m. to cast their ballots.

FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the qualified voters of the School District shall be entitled to vote in said annual vote and election. GIRL SCOUT RECRUITMENT Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization in our local community!

Girl Scout troops meet to plan and carry out different activities.

These activities can be based on badges, journeys (bigger projects), service projects, or just for fun activities. Troops usually meet once every 2 weeks and there are optional neighborhood programs (ex. Ice skating, ice cream social), and council programs (ex. camping and travel opportunities) that girls can participate in as well. The younger troops tend to focus more on badge work, the middle school troops and high school level troops tend to focus more on travel and fun activities. Also in our community, we have a teen troop (6th – 12th grade) that is dedicated to hiking and only does trips during the year. Girl Scouts is for all girls kindergarten through 12th grade. We are forming new kindergarten troops now so that we will be ready by September. HIGH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TO HOLD DINNER DANCE IN FALL The Alumni Association has scheduled its first membership drive and fundraiser event for graduates, spouses, singles, family members and their friends are welcome. It will also be a 50th reunion for the class of ’61 and the 55th for the class of ’56. A sit-down dinner/dance at Birch Hill in Schodack from 6:00 – 11:00 PM on Saturday, October 22, 2011, is scheduled.

The cost: $45 per person/ $10 of which benefits the Alumni Association. In the past 12 years, nineteen $500 awards have been presented to outstanding graduating seniors.
