ON-LINE PAYMENTS IN EAST GREENBUSH Toni Murphy, Receiver of Taxes in East Greenbush, is taking steps to implement another expanded service to residents in her office. The long-time incumbent announced that she wants to push her operation further into the current computer/ information age with a new streamlined payment option.

“I have asked members of the Town Board to authorize the acceptance of electronic payments or ‘E-checks’ for Town Taxes”, she said. “This is a common practice in business venues today, and many people handle most of their household expenses this way already.” Murphy has spoken with her software providers, and has assured Town Leaders that this process is consistent with the existing receipt and report programming in the system. A resolution is being prepared for consideration at the next Town Board Meeting on September 21st that would adopt Mrs. Murphy’s proposal.

Throughout her years of service, Toni Murphy has repeatedly implemented new ideas in her office to improve work flow, and provide improved service to residents. Under her direction, the Office was converted from antiquated paper processing to computerized operations. Since then, she has improved staffing and expanded office coverage to be more available to residents. Most recently, Toni made it possible for people to use credit cards in making their payments.

Toni looks forward to the Town Board’s prompt approval of her proposal and its immediate implementation.

KEITH LANGLEY SEEKING ELECTION AS EAST GREENBUSH SUPERVISOR Keith Langley is seeking election as East Greenbush Supervisor, saying he will use his decades of private business experience to bring new leadership and make town government more responsive and efficient for taxpayers.

Langley has gained valuable business experience as a project superintendent and safety coordinator with Rifenburg Contracting Corporation, helping guide some of the biggest construction projects to successful completion.

Langley said he has spoken to many taxpayers concerned about high town taxes and water rates and the record-high town debt that caused the town’s bond rating to be reduced to junk bond status.

“All across town, residents and taxpayers are worried about the direction of town government. They are worried about the high town tax burden and quality of life in their neighborhoods,” said Langley.

“As Supervisor, I will make sure taxpayers are not forgotten and that residents received the services they need in the most efficient, effective way possible,” said Langley.

Langley is seeking election, along with other members of the Hometown Leadership Team, including Ed Gilbert for Town Council, Dan Fiacco for Town Council and Corine Sheldon for Receiver of Taxes. At my recent shopping stop at the Goff Farmer’s Market, I enjoyed an informative visit with several of the young volunteers and was impressed with their knowledge and dedication. Toni Lettrick told how she and her friends show up three days tending to the plots, planting, weeding, cultivating, and harvesting.

Erin Levesque explained how not all tomatoes turn red when they are ripe, and named some different varieties. Nancy Scott who directs the Goff Organic Garden Program pointed out that even though the market is closing for the season, there is still plenty of fruit on the vine. She said the students will still put in time and that the harvest will be shared with local food pantries and programs for the needy.

It’s obvious that there are strong roots being grown around that little red barn. One mother who was there happily pointed out the workers were more likely to try different vegetables, and tune in to good nutrition. Programs like this plant the seeds of good citizenship and promote positive growth for the future of our community. ~Submitted by Sue Mangold

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER OPEN IN RENSSELAER COUNTY The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has opened a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) located at the Rensselaer County Department of Social Services Administration Building, 127 Bloomingrove Dr. in the Town of North Greenbush.

The DRC is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 8 pm until further notice.

Residents who have sustained damage to their home, apartment, or property are urged to seek assistance at the DRC. KINDERHOOK BANK - HURRICANE IRENE DISASTER RELIEF FUNDRAISER Kinderhook Bank announced it is launching fundraising efforts for Hurricane Irene disaster relief in partnership with the American Red Cross Northeastern NY. All Kinderhook Bank branches will be accepting donations beginning September 6th through September 16th to help families in the Capital Region receive much needed emergency services.

“Kinderhook Bank is launching this fundraising initiative to directly help our neighbors, friends, and customers access basic human necessities like food, clothing and shelter as they try to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Irene,” said President and Chief Executive Officer, Robert A. Sherwood.

GOD’S GRACIOUSNESS FOR ALL On Sunday, September 18, 2011, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will study the Gospel of Matthew 10: 1-16 and Exodus 16:2-15 to further their understanding of God’s promise to be with us always. Live Birds of Prey descend on Glens Falls City Park on September 17 in conjunction with the Friends of the IBA Juried Art Show hosted by Crandall Public Library. SCHODACK RESIDENTS NEED NOT APPLY Letter to the Editor: At its July meeting, the Schodack Town Board appointed James Church, formerly an operative for Joe Bruno, to our Planning Board. The vacancy on the Board arose because the previous month, Peter Goold, Planning Board Chairman of over twenty-five years, was appointed acting town assessor to replace Sharon Martin, elevated to the County Assessor ’s office.

Goold’s appointment had been rumored since he lost his patronage job with the state. While Supervisor Dowds said the position was posted and several candidates were interviewed, I believe it was a foregone conclusion that Goold would get the job. I personally like Mr. Goold. It’s the process by which both he and Mr. Church got their positions that I find deeply troubling.

Behind closed doors, in a political game of musical chairs, the powers that be decided who they wanted to fill the Planning Board vacancy - someone who would fall into perfect lock step with the ruling majority. There was no town-wide search for the most qualified candidate to fill the seat.

So it was also with the newest Town Councilman, Mike Kenney, appointed in July, 2010 to the Board at a meeting that didn’t even include his appointment on its agenda. Mr. Kenney’s qualifications for the job? He’s County Legislator Alex Shannon’s nephew - actual nepotism at work.

The way these appointments are made begs the question: Is it good for the people of Schodack? Can anyone be truly independent of those who gave them their positions in this uncontested manner? The tax burden on residents speaks for itself: decisions that directly affect our lives are made behind closed doors with virtually no public discussion. Yet somehow, when the vote comes up for one spending measure after another, or the appointment of friends and relatives to town positions, Town Board members unanimously rubber-stamp each and every item on the agenda. With no one to question any expenditure, residents see their taxes go ever-higher. With zero debate, poor decisions are made.

A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE Letter to the Editor: As a woman longing to become a first-time mother, I felt I had to address the concerns raised by Katherine Imbierowics in her recent Letter to the Editor. In her letter, Katherine says, if she became pregnant at a young age, she would “like to do anything to save my future, my career, and live a happy and easy life.” I would simply suggest that perhaps there are other ways to handle what is indeed a tragic and all too common problem, without necessarily resorting to an abortion. Perhaps a better way to give a young mother a chance at a good life is for the community and schools to develop programs to offer emotional and social support for the mother and baby, rather than leaving them to their own devices.

Perhaps the solution is to focus more on the education of parents and young adults both in how to prevent such a tragedy from occurring and how to handle the situation if it does. But above all else, I think perhaps we have to get away from this prevalent idea that a child is a “mistake”, and nothing more than an intrusion on our own, personal lives. Prepared or not, unwanted things happen all the time; critical illnesses in ourselves or our families, economic crashes, loss of job, natural disasters, and yes, pregnancy. Few of us are lucky enough to live the lives we dream for ourselves in high school. While we should certainly strive for the best in our lives, even an unexpected baby just may prove the best, most meaningful “mistake” you ever make.

But if nothing else, should you find yourself in such a situation, I hope you would also consider adoption, so a woman like myself, who would give anything to make your “mistake”, could have the chance to give your baby the life you fear you can not.

That way, not only do you get a second chance at a life, your child does, too. ~Elizabeth Fowler, Sand Lake

Schodack Republicans Select Fiscally Conservative Slate for 2011 The Schodack Republican Committee has endorsed a slate of candidates who will continue with the fiscally conservative policies that produced an upgrade in the town’s bond rating and protected the town’s quality of life.

Committee members endorsed Supervisor Dennis Dowds, Councilman Frank Curtis, Councilman Mike Kenney, Town Clerk Donna Conlin, Receiver of Taxes Kathy Lubbers and Town Justice Paul Peter.

Under Republican leadership, Schodack recently saw an upgrade in the town’s bond rating from A1 to Aa3 by respected fiscal analysts Moody’s. The upgrade came about after an independent review of town finances and despite a prolonged recession, and puts the town in a better position to attract new business and jobs.

The Schodack GOP team was supported by a strong showing on nominating petitions, with nearly 500 signatures collected on nominating petitions. Along with the Republican nomination, Dowds, Curtis, Kenney, Conlin, Lubbers and Peter also received the support of the Conservative and Independence parties.

Along with endorsing the re-election of Dowds, Curtis, Kenney, Conlin, Lubbers and Peter, the town GOP also supported the nomination for re-election of Surrogate Court Judge Chris Hummel and Sheriff Jack Mahar, and the election of Joel Abelove for District Attorney. Schodack Republicans are looking to build on the successes of 2010 which saw the committee support the election of Congressman Chris Gibson and Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, along with other Republican victories.

Kenney was also elected to the Town Board in 2010 in a special election.

RENSSELAER REPUBLICAN MONTHLY CLUB MEETING City Republican Chair Lou Lourinia reviewed this summer’s approval by the City Planning Commission of the environmental quality for the hot ash/ asphalt plant being planned for the port of Rensselaer despite citizen protests before the Commission and in published newspaper reports and letters to the editor. According to Mr. Lournia, continued protest strategy is being studied by the Independent “Concerned Citizens of Rensselaer.” He urged committee members to attend and speak out at bi-monthly Planning Commission meetings (2nd and 4th Monday evenings) as well as City Council meetings (1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings) at City Hall at 6PM. “The public must attend these meetings if it wants to see open government in Rensselaer,” he said.

Letter to the Editor: I would like to start out by saying that the contents of this letter are of my own opinion and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of all my fellow employees of the Averill park Transportation Department.

It is now the first week of school and many parents have come to their bus drivers with great concern about the changes being made to the previous bus routes. I would like to state that the bus drivers have had nothing to do with reducing hours and changes to arrival and departure times. The overwhelming majority of the runs have been cut by any where from 15 minutes to 1 hour. We all know these are difficult times and belts have to be tightened by doing more with less. I can understand the parent’s frustrations with these major changes.

These changes were made by administration only.

It is my opinion that these changes were made to save the district money, and I believe there is room for improvement.

But the drastic cuts the district has made to the majority of the runs is not an improvement, and in some cases, have created dangerous bus routes and unsafe situations for the children.

The district has assured us that they will address our concerns and it is only the first week and things will get better. It is my personal belief that the runs were cut to reduce the salaries of the employees of the Transportation Department as retribution for not agreeing to the districts proposed contract. AVERILL PARK COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA Do you now play a musical instrument or have played one in the past? If so, you really should join our community orchestra. The group is comprised of adults and students from this area.

We practice at the Algonquin Middle School on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. We will be presenting a Christmas concert this year and also another one in the spring of 2012. Since we are an orchestra we always need more string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and bass. We can also use more percussion, as well as additional woodwind and brass players. Our first rehearsal will be on Wednesday, September 14. No audition is needed to join. Just come, and enjoy, even if it has been a long time since you played your instrument. We will have a folder ready with music for you.

ROPE MAKING The Poestenkill Historical Society will be starting their fall schedule Tuesday, September 27th, 2011, with a program on the history of Rope Making. Ropesmiths, Dave and Mike, started making historically correct cordage in 1995, after noticing that Civil War Re-enactors were using nylon cordage in their portrayals. From the beginning of history, hemp has been the preferred fiber for rope making in Europe. The only shortcoming was that, since it came from the stalk of a plant, it was proned to rot if not treated with pine tar. Early 1900’s the production of hemp was outlawed in the U.S as a result from lobbying from oil companies who just came out with a new product — NYLON! Dave and Mike are the only suppliers of hand laid, “tarred” hemp cordage in the New World!! The public is welcome to this free program held in the Poestenkill Town Hall (RT 351) at 7:00PM on Tuesday, Sept. 27th.

~Hurricane Relief~ MARKET DAY TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS The Friends of the Poestenkill Library and Poestenkill Business Association are working together to assist the many homeowners in the town who were recently double-teamed by Hurricane Irene and then tropical storm Lee. Two homes in the town were totally destroyed and a dozen more were severely damaged. One immediate need is for bottled water. Donations of either gallons of water or individual servings can be dropped off at the town hall. At Market day, September 17, between 9 am and 1 p.m. at the Town Green a special raffle will be held to help the victims financially.

Make a donation and then guess the number of pieces of candy in the jar. The winner takes home the jar of candy. Checks can be written to the Poestenkill Business Association with a notation “Flood Victim’s Fund.” This is a time to support our neighbors emotionally, physically, and financially in a time of need.

EMMANUEL REFORMED CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday school began Sept. 11th at Emmanuel Reformed Church for the 2011-2012 Sunday School Program.

I realize so much is happening everywhere.

So much need, so much cost, so much lost. But think about it.

Most, if not all of us still have our homes. We still have electricity and fresh water. We could have lost so much more, BUT were spared. Schoharie Village STILL has No Power, No Water Source, some are living on generators, some lost their homes, and some homes are going to be lost to demolition. YET, they are so grateful for any bit of help that comes in. I am aware that there are other communities, BUT so much MAN POWER is still needed! Please get the word out. There is so much that is needed there...HANDS! Clean up is now. Rebuilding is yet to come. NORTH GREENBUSH REPUBLICANS SEEK TO CONTINUE PROGRESS FOR TOWN The North Greenbush Republican Committee has endorsed a slate of candidates for the 2011 elections, including elected officials who restored town finances and revitalized important services while holding the line on town property taxes.

Republicans also pledged continued support for elected officials who have placed town residents before politics, and avoided the controversies and negativity that have held the town back in the past Town Republicans supported current Councilman Al Spain Jr. for Town Council, Councilman Lou Desso for re-election, Stephanie Piel for Town Council, Amy Clinton for Receiver of Taxes and Town Clerk Kathryn S. Connolly for re-election.

Both Spain and Desso joined with Councilmembers Joe Bott and Kelly Hoffman, who have also been endorsed by the Republican Committee, in reducing a $450,000 deficit inherited from the previous Democratic Town Board.

The GOP-endorsed team plan on continuing fiscally conservative policies, and reasonable growth to expand the tax base and provide relief to taxpayers. The team will also work to provide needed services, protect quality of life and govern in a cooperative and productive manner.

Along with nominating Spain, Desso, Piel, Clinton and Connolly, the town Republican Committee also supported the re-election of Sheriff Jack Mahar and Surrogate Court Judge Chris Hummel, and the election of Joel Abelove as District Attorney.

FOOD COMPACT HIATUS The Nassau Cooperative Community Food Compact will take a four week hiatus starting after the September 21st market.

Ordering will resume on October 22nd and 23rd for the October 26th market. The all-volunteer staff will not be available to run the market during those weeks. We will miss our many walk-in shoppers and will look forward to seeing them again when we reopen. For over a year, Compact members have been picking up their food orders and selling extra produce to walk-in visitors on Wednesday nights at Grace United Methodist Church in Nassau.

The public is welcome to stop in and shop from 4-7 pm.

The Compact membership has more than tripled in size in its first year and is currently a finalist for the Locavore Grant to be awarded at the Chatham Fair. Members will be happy to explain the program and answer any questions.

The Rensselaer City Water Department will flush hydrants throughout the City beginning September 19, 2011 and ending September 23, 2011.

Users may experience temporary discoloration as well as reduced water pressure during these operations. It is recommended that the washing of clothes be avoided when flushing is taking place in your local area.

Periodic flushing of the water distribution system is necessary to remove sediment and as a means of locating non-working hydrants and valves.

The School year is just beginning, but many of our fall athletes here at Averill Park High have been working hard for a little less than a month to get ready for their 2011 fall seasons.

One athlete in particular is a senior with a 91 GPA and a love for the game of soccer, that senior is Heather Vale. Heather is our very first scholar athlete of this school year, but she won’t be our last.

Heather is the Girl’s Varsity Soccer Goalie; she has been playing soccer since 3rd grade and loves the rush of the game. Being named a scholar athlete is seen as an honor to Vale, because she feels that it is nice to be recognized on the field as well as in the classroom for all her hard work and dedication. This year she is taking Advanced Placement Biology, Senior Art Portfolio, Psychology, Participation in Government, Economics, Chic Lit, Military History, and Heath. “Advanced Placement Biology,” says Vale, “is going to be my biggest challenge this year. Senior Portfolio is my favorite course so far, because I find it interesting and relieving with such a busy schedule. I use that time during the day to relax and enjoy my friends company while doing something that I really like.” In addition to playing soccer, Heather played Lacrosse and participated in Indoor Track. This season will be Vale’s third season on the varsity soccer team, and she is a two year starter in the goal. In her spare time, Heather works at a retirement community and spends time with her friends. She finds working at the retirement community rewarding. “I would love to continue playing soccer in college whether for the school or on an intramural or club team,” Vale told me when interviewed. Her love for the game is fuelled by the rush of the game and her love for her teammates and playing with them. Vale is interested in several different majors for her college career. She is interested in Marine Biology, Physical Therapy or owning her own business; but for now, her major is undeclared. She is looking to attend Syracuse University, the College of St. Rose, or a couple other SUNY schools.

Heather would like to thank her father for her success on the field and in the classroom because he goes to all of her games and encourages her to do her best at everything she does.

Even though Heather is a goal keeper, she is definitely an athlete to watch; you never know when she will just dive into the air and snag a ball to prevent the other team from scoring a goal. Heather is a very dedicated athlete who has put in countless hours and seasons of work into improving her skills on the field. Best of luck to you Heather in the rest of your season, and we hope to hear great things about you in the future!

CAPITAL DISTRICT YMCA BOWLING TO BENEFIT KIDS EVENT IN E. GREENBUSH

PAPSCANEE ISLAND NATURE PRESERVE IN HUDSON VALLEY RIVER RAMBLE

The Greenbush Area branch of the Capital District YMCA is teaming up with the Spare Time Family Fun Center of East Greenbush for a fun night of family bowling. Set for Friday, September 16, 2011, from 6-8p.m., this event take places at the Spare Time bowling center, located at 570 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush. All proceeds benefit the Greenbush YMCA’s Reach Out For Youth scholarship program. This program provides access to Y services and programs, from after-school care to swimming lessons, to families and individuals who might not otherwise be able to afford these services.

The cost for this event is $15 per person and includes two hours of bowling, shoes, pizza, and a beverage. The Papscanee Island Nature Preserve will again be among the areas in and around the Hudson River that will be included in the Hudson River Valley Ramble. The Ramble will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 9:30 a.m. at nature preserves, historic sites and recreational areas along the Hudson River in several counties. The 2010 Ramble marks the twelth year the event is being held at the Preserve.

In recognition of the Ramble, there will be a special guided one-hour walk through the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve.

Members of the public are invited to attend the walk through the Preserve, which is free of charge.

“The Papscanee Island Nature Preserve is one of the most beautiful areas along the Hudson River and we are excited about showing off the Preserve during the Ramble,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

The Preserve is located on Staats Island Road, just off State Route 9J. Take a right onto Staats Island Road and proceed over the railroad tracks to the parking area at the entrance of the Preserve.

EAST GREENBUSH FIRE COMPANY 17th ANNUAL GOLF SCRAMBLE Each year for the last 16 years the East Greenbush Fire Company has looked forward to sponsoring our very enjoyable golf outing. This year, our 17th year, will be no exception with a great day planned.

The date of the event is Sunday, September 25th, at the Winding Brook Country Club for golf with Checkin beginning at 9AM and tee off at 10PM, lunch will be served at the turn. After a great day of golf at 6PM at the East Greenbush Fire Co. Pavilion, located at 68 Phillips Road in East Greenbush, we will be conducting our annual steak bake for all golfers and open to guests. The cost for Golf and Bake is $85 per person; Bake only is $35 per person. WE hope you can join us for a great day once again!

The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society of New York call on schools to abide by new provision in state’s humane education law This school year, middle- and high-school students throughout New York will be reminded of their legal right to choose when it comes to animal dissection. An amendment to the Education law, signed in August 2010 by former Gov. Paterson and which takes effect this year, requires schools to notify students and parents of the right of students to abstain from animal dissection and to abstain from witnessing the dissection of animals without being penalized.

The legislation, A.3467-B, was proposed by the Humane Society of New York and was introduced by Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, D/WF-Manhattan, and Senator Suzi Oppenheimer, D/WFMamaroneck. It charges the board of education or trustees of a school district to develop a policy to give reasonable notice to students and parents about their right to opt out of animal dissection as students with moral or religious objections may do under the existing law. “Over the years, we have been contacted by many students who expressed moral objections to dissection but who were not informed by their teachers of their right to do an alternate project,” said Elinor Molbegott, legal counsel/animal issues, Humane Society of New York. “The new notice requirement should not only help to effectuate the dissection opt-out provision in the humane education law, but should also encourage a dialogue about respect, kindness, and compassion.” The Humane Society of the United States urged passage of the bill in August 2010 on behalf of its more than 800,000 New York supporters. “Adopting this measure has brought New York into line with best practice,” said Patrick Kwan, New York state director for The HSUS. “The mandate greatly improves the existing law which many students and parents do not know about and makes life-science education more fair and democratic.”

In recognition of the importance of forests to the health and well being of society, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced a contest to Celebrate New York’s Forests. The contest is designed to increase awareness of and appreciation for all types of forests, urban and rural, large and small, public and privately owned, across the state.

“The value of our forests cannot be underestimated,” said Commissioner Joe Martens. “In addition to providing clean air, clean water and places for wildlife to live, thousands of people are employed in the forest products, outdoor recreation and tourism industries, thanks to New York’s wealth of forest.”

Submitted photos should capture all aspects of forests and trees in five different categories: • Nature (wildlife, plants, natural landscapes, etc.)

• Enjoying the forest (hunting, fishing, trails, camping, hiking, etc.)

• Trees where we live (parks, streets, yards, etc.)

• Forest products (maple syrup, lumber, baseball bats, furniture, etc.)

• State-owned Forests (State Forests, Forest Preserve lands, forested Wildlife Management Areas, Campgrounds) Contest details, rules and necessary forms can be found on DEC’s website at: www.dec.ny.gov/lands/75396.html.

Photos must be taken in New York State. Photos will be accepted through November 1, 2011. A maximum of three photos may be submitted by a photographer, each with a submission form found on the DEC website, via e-mail or on a CD via regular mail. DEC has non-exclusive rights to use submitted photos on DEC’s website, in the Conservationist magazine, in brochures and in other publications promoting forests and DEC. The photographer will retain ownership of the photo.

The winner in each category will receive a framed print of their photo. Winning photos will be distributed to the media when the winners are announced on or about December 1, 2011.

GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK INVITES ARTISTS TO THE PARK THIS FALL Grafton Lakes State Park invites artists to portray the park’s fall scenery on Sundays from September 18th through October 9th (Columbus Day weekend).

Registered participants in the Art in the Park program will receive free Sunday admission to the park to paint, draw, or photograph in exchange for submitting a piece in the Silent Art Auction at the Winter Festival on January 21, 2012.

The Park’s forests, wildlife, and lakes make for spectacular autumn scenery and an ample supply of inspiration. The pieces will be displayed and auctioned at the Winter Festival, which was attended by nearly 2000 people last year. Artists will split the proceeds of the auction with the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, a group that supports the park’s environmental education programs. Any works that do not sell at the auction will remain on display in the lobby of the park office for the coming year or be returned to the artist.

To sign up, participants can register at the ticket booth on weekends or at the Park office Monday-Friday to receive an Art in the Park pass. You can also call the Park naturalists to register for Art in the Park at 279-1155 and have a pass mailed to you. Space is limited, so call soon to reserve your pass.

The vote upon such proposition shall be by machine or absentee ballot. CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT Civil War Encampment on October 1st and 2nd, 2011 at NY RT 43 near the Veteran’s Memorial and Averill Park High School from 10AM to 4PM. CHRISTIAN ED CLASS HEARS ABOUT BEING FORGIVEN & FORGIVING OTHERS On September 11, 2011, Christian Education at the Nassau Reformed Church began its 2011 - 2012 Christian Education Program year. The Season had its beginning at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary where Rev. Edward L. Van Kampen welcomed the new Director of the C E Program, Carol Sanford, and assistant, Donna Ortgies, both of Nassau, and the young boys and girls as they prepared for their first session of studying the Gospels and the traditions of the Reformed Church. Before leaving for class, the group listened to Mrs. Sanford speak about the importance of young people joining the Christian journey early in life so as to develop the attitude of love and service which Jesus intends for all who follow him. Before leaving for class, Rev. Van Kampen presented a sermon for young people in which the importance of continual forgiveness and forgiving being a part of the Christian journey.

The following boys and girls were welcomed and became part of the 2011- 2012 Christian Ed Class at Nassau Reformed: Alexis Bulan, Madison Bulan, Josh and Justin Cardenelle, Rebecca Forster, Jack Kelley, McKenna Kelley, Megan and Matthew Murdock, Morgan and Kelsey Pelletier, Morgan and Zachary Sanford, and Christian Zownir. The class begins each week in the sanctuary at 11 a.m. and adjourns following an activity involving young people as the young fold moves to the fellowship hall in a class room setting. Boys and girls of all ages are invited to join four Christian Education program.

The Alumni Association has scheduled its first membership drive and fundraiser event for graduates, spouses, singles, family members and their friends are welcome. It will also be a 50th reunion for the class of ’61 and the 55th for the class of ’56. A sit-down dinner/dance at Birch Hill in Schodack from 6:00 – 11:00 PM on Saturday, October 22, 2011, is scheduled.

The cost: $45 per person/ $10 of which benefits the Alumni Association. In the past 12 years, nineteen $500 awards have been presented to outstanding graduating seniors.

COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2001 REUNION The Columbia High School Class of 2001 10-year Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Wolfert’s Roost Country Club, located at 120 Van Rensselaer Boulevard in Albany, New York, from 6:30 pm until 11:00 pm. There will be an open bar from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm for draft beer, wine, and soda, and a cash bar thereafter. There will be food and dancing all night as well!

The cost of the reunion is $55.00 a person, or $110.00 a couple.

EGCSD INSURANCE/POINT REDUCTION AND PRE-LICENSING CLASSES The East Greenbush Central School District’s Continuing Education program announces its next available Six-Hour Insurance/Point Reduction and Five-Hour Pre-Licensing classes.

The Six-Hour Driver Training Associates Insurance/Point Reduction course reduces car liability, collision, and no-fault insurance premiums by 10% for 3 years and may remove up to 4 points off your license, as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. It will be held in two evening sessions: Tuesday, September 20th; and Thursday, September 22nd, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. both evenings.

The Five-Hour Pre-Licensing course is required before an appointment for a road test may be scheduled. It will be held in two consecutive Tuesday evening sessions: October 11th and Tuesday, October 18th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both evenings.
