The Sand Lake Democrats have unanimously selected Mark Cioffi as their candidate for Town Board in the fall election. Mark is a 40-year resident of the Town and lives in West Sand Lake with his wife, Beth.

Mark received his bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Rose and is recently retired from a 35-year career with Standard Register Corporation where he managed their relationship with both commercial and government entities.

In accepting the nomination, Mark stated, “I am humbled by the endorsement of my friends and neighbors and will work hard to represent them at a time when communities are facing tremendous challenges. I intend to put my business experience managing budgets, government projects and employees to use as a member of the board. OKTOBERFEST BRINGS BAVARIA TO NASSAU Nassau’s Village Beautification Committee presents a traditional Oktoberfest celebration on Sunday, October 2nd, at the Village Commons Park. The event runs from 12 noon until 4 p.m. and features traditional German foods, beverages and entertainment. Inspired by European harvest festivals, the Oktoberfest will feature a complete menu including bratwurst, bauernwurst and knockwurst, imported German sauerkraut, potato salad and made-as-you-watch potato pancakes. Imported German beers and wines will be available, including Spaten Oktoberfest beer, the same beer served to millions at Munich’s original Oktoberfest.

Musical entertainment will feature Nassau’s own Bavarian Barons. A traditional German brass band founded in the village 40 years ago. With a lively program of polkas, waltzes and marches, the group has a long history of entertaining the public throughout New York and New England.

Admission is free and will take place under tents rain or shine.

LOCAL CONGREGATION PLANS BLESSING OF ANIMALS Blooming Grove Reformed Church will host a “Blessing of the Animals” gathering on Sunday, October 2nd, at 11:30AM. The brief gathering will include a prayer and a time for blessing each animal. Everyone is welcome to bring their pets.

This will be the third year that the congregation has hosted a time for people to gather with their animals. It is held in anticipation of the feast of Francis of Assisi (4 October), who was known, among other things for his care for animals and the environment. “More and more, science shows us what faith has told us all along: that our well-being is intrinsically linked to the well-being of our planet and its creatures. This is especially true of our pets, the animals we live with,” says the Rev. James Hart Brumm, pastor at Blooming Grove and officiant for the annual celebration. “It is natural for us to want to pray for them, and important for us to remind ourselves of our place in the created order.”

The “Blessing of the Animals” will be held outside, weather permitting, at the congregation’s barrier-free facility, behind the CDTA Park & Ride off Route 4 in DeFreestville.

JOHN SNIEZYK FOR SAND LAKE TOWN BOARD The Sand Lake Democratic Party has nominated John Sniezyk for Sand Lake Town Board in the upcoming November election. “I am honored to have been chosen and anticipate using my private enterprise experiences solving problems and containing cost to keep Sand Lake a great town,” commented Sniezyk, accepting the nomination.

John is a retired engineer, working most recently as a project engineer for plastics companies. Projects varied from electrical connectors on the International Space Station and the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to commercial cleaning products and sporting goods. “I believe my background and skills transfer readily to Town government. In my job, I was responsible for keeping the customer, management and workers informed of the goals, cost and any problems that affect a project. Elected officials need to keep residents, department heads and town workers informed of the goals, cost and reasons if changes are needed.”

John is a strong supporter of the Democratic platform of Town Supervisor candidate Flora Fasoldt and fellow Town Board candidate Mark Cioffi and looks forward to working cooperatively and productively with Board members. GRAND OPENING OF CEO’S FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

Human service center will meet needs of low-income families The ribbon cutting on September 9, 2011 officially opened the CEO Southern Rensselaer County Family Resource Center to the community. Community, local, state, and federal partners attended the grand opening ceremony at 24 New Road, Nassau, NY. The center, which created nearly 175 on-site jobs during the construction phase, will bring an estimated 15 jobs to the area; provide educational services to 47 children through Head Start and Early Head Start and provide support services to an estimated 1,300 individuals annually.

“In the current economic climate, Community Action is needed more than ever to ensure that all individuals, children, and families have equal access to support to promote selfsufficiency and stability,” stated Karen E. Gordon, Executive Director of CEO. In attendance at this celebration were Yasmina Vinci, Executive Director of the National Head Start Association; NYS Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin; Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino; Schodack Town Supervisor Dennis Dowds; Nassau Town Supervisor David Fleming; and Joyce Thomas, Regional Administrator for the Administration for Children and Families in Region II, among others.

NORTH GREENBUSH DEMOCRATS ANNOUNCE ENDORSEMENTS FOR 2011 The North Greenbush Democratic Committee has announced its endorsement of a slate of Democrats for this fall’s town elections. Chairman Dan Ashley said the slate reflects the Democratic Committee’s commitment to providing people a choice between candidates on elections day as a means of preserving our two party system.

The Committee endorsed Charles B. Smith for Supervisor, along with former Councilman Ernest Kern and Andria Fisher for Town Council. The committee also endorsed Michael Derevlany for Receiver of Taxes to replace the retiring Kyran Devery. Mr. Derevlany holds an MBA in Finance from Adelphi University and a J.D. Degree from PACE University. Rounding out the endorsements is Highway Superintendent Mark Premo who also serves as the Deputy Supervisor.

“Our candidates are committed to progress in North Greenbush while shining the light of openness on the business of town government”, stated Ashley. Once elected, all town board meetings will again be broadcast on cable TV Public Access so people can see and hear their town board in action from the comfort of their homes. In addition, the candidates are committed to see action on the construction of the I-90 Connector to relieve the long commutes we are experiencing and to promote economic development along the corridor and the RPI Tech Park.

IN THE JOY OF SERVING On Sunday, September 25, 2011, the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will concentrate on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians at Philippi and believers everywhere. The sermon, based on Philippians 2:1-13, and titled “In the Joy of Serving,” will define the mind of Christ that we are to seek in carrying out the role of servanthood, He carried out. Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will refer to the specifics of a model of new possibilities that God sets before his children in serving others as outlined

by Paul in his letter.

Christian Education begins with a “Ministry with the Young” in the sanctuary before adjourning to class. FOOD COMPACT HIATUS The Nassau Cooperative Community Food Compact will take a four week hiatus starting after the September 21st market.

Ordering will resume on October 22nd and 23rd for the October 26th market. The all-volunteer staff will not be available to run the market during those weeks. We will miss our many walk-in shoppers and will look forward to seeing them again when we reopen.

For over a year, Compact members have been picking up their food orders and selling extra produce to walk-in visitors on Wednesday nights at Grace United Methodist Church in Nassau. The public is welcome to stop in and shop from 4-7 pm. The Compact membership has more than tripled in size in its first year and is currently a finalist for the Locavore Grant to be awarded at the Chatham Fair. Members will be happy to explain the program and answer any questions.

The long awaited construction of the Couse Corners roundabout began this July with great hopes of completion by the fall. Our town people worked diligently with consultants and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to assure a smooth transition from the existing roadway layout to the new roundabout.

We have just concluded meeting with National Grid, Verizon, DOT and the contractor to review the schedule and progress to date. Unfortunately, due to Verizon’s labor strike, hurricane Irene, and generally poor weather conditions the past month, the utilities have been required to divert their work forced to people throughout the northeast who are in dire need of services and have no power or phone service. These delays by Verizon and National Grid have pushed the completion date to a point that we will incur cold weather and freezing temperatures, preventing the placement of blacktop on the roundabout.

We have come to a mutual decision that it is best for the project to be placed on hold until April of 2012 whereby the new completion date will be June 1, 2012. Work on the project will continue into November, but the current layout of the intersection will remain the same through the winter months.

We ask that you all please bear with us as our neighbors are dealing with much more pressing issues than the Town of East Greenbush. ~Rick McCabe, Town of East Greenbush Supervisor

EGCSD STUDENTS EARN WISE BLUE STAR SCHOOL STATUS East Greenbush Central School District’s Columbia High School 2010-2011 Financial Life Skills class was recently awarded the WISE (Working in Support of Education) Blue Star School designation. The students earned the award for their exceptional performance on the 2011 Financial Literacy Certification Test. The test, administered nationally, was taken by the District’s Financial Decision Making class in May 2011.

The exam’s topics included: banking and financial systems, investments, credit, identity theft, insurance, and retirement planning.

According to Columbia High School’s Business Education teacher Tracy Farrell, “I am very proud to have the opportunity to offer this program and testing to our students. This award proves that we have been providing a strong curriculum for career and life readiness.”

WISE spokesperson David Anderson stated, “We are truly proud of your students’ accomplishment. We are equally proud of the teachers in your school who helped them become Certified Financially Literate. Because of your dedicated and tireless commitment, you have given them vital knowledge about their personal finance. You have also provided them with the tools they need to become financially capable young adults.” Columbia High School will be presented with the Blue Star Banner award in November at the WISE annual MoneyPower Conference for Financial Literacy.

I am running for reelection for Nassau Town Councilman so I can continue to work on the many important projects that are crucial for a healthy and vibrant town. I have a unique vantage point of knowing how the town actually .functions; day to day and year to year. I have fought hard to protect our town and I have worked diligently on many major issues.

Over the past 6 years, first as Supervisor and then as a Town Councilman, I have worked on developing the comprehensive plan and zoning law. I secured engineering funding for the Burden Lake sewer project and lobbied to get the Dewey Leoffel toxic waste site listed with the Federal Superfund. I have carefully reviewed budgets and expenditures to make sure we have a responsible budget.

Being a board member means more than just showing up to vote at a Board meeting. A Councilman should be selfmotivated, take responsibilities for important projects, and bring the voice of the people to the table. As I have done since taking office, I continue to represent the citizens of Nassau in a non-partisan fashion and I encourage our citizens to be active in their town government. While some board members would rather rubber-stamp what is handed to them so they can get back home quickly, I take the time to do the work, make an informed decision, and be sure that proper procedures are followed.

It has been a pleasure and honor to serve in local government for the past 6 years and I look forward to serving the great town of Nassau for another four years. I would sincerely appreciate your continued support so we can continue to move forward together.

EGCSD STUDENTS PAY TRIBUTE TO 9-11 VICTIMS AND FIRST RESPONDERS

East Greenbush Central School District’s student leaders at Columbia High School worked together and prepared a “Never Forget” tribute ceremony that paid honor to the victims and the first responders of September 11, 2001. In addition, they paid a special tribute to the members of our armed services and the school community’s fire department, police department, and rescue squad. The ceremony was also attended by local dignitaries and Columbia’s senior class - most of whom were only 8 years old when 9-11 occurred. East Greenbush Town Supervisor, Richard McCabe, addressed the audience-comprised mostly of Columbia High School seniors and honored guests.

He talked about seeing the people in New York City running away from the Twin Towers all covered in soot - they were indistinguishable. On television that day, and the days to follow, he saw story after story of people whose only concern was to save their fellow human beings. He saw the survivors helping strangers. He saw the first responders risking their lives.

Addressing the students directly, Mr. McCabe said, “You are E.G. SATURDAY IN THE PARK the future. Never forget the importance in helping each other.”

NYS TAX DEPT. IMPLEMENTS NEW HARDSHIP ELIGIBILITY PROGRAM Economic Hardship Consideration Added To Existing Offer In Compromise Program The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced new reform measures that will improve tax administration on behalf of taxpayers statewide. New eligibility consideration for severe economic hardship will allow the Department to offer more favorable payment terms to taxpayers with overwhelming tax liabilities. The new eligibility factors will be added to the Department’s existing liability settlement program known as the Offer in Compromise Program.

“The changes to the Offer in Compromise Program will allow us to provide relief for taxpayers experiencing undue economic hardship,” explained Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox. “The global economic downturn has made it more important than ever for government to provide more flexible payment options while at the same time protecting all taxpayers with a common sense approach to settling outstanding debt that may otherwise go unpaid.”

Prior to the changes, the Offer in Compromise Program limited the Department to accepting settlement offers due to insolvency or bankruptcy. Now, the Department can consider other factors that may make it unduly burdensome for a taxpayer to pay a liability in full. These factors could include extraordinary individual or family health care costs, or unemployment. Each case will be carefully analyzed so that all taxpayers are protected. No settlement will be accepted that could decrease overall compliance or that would be counter to the best interests of the State.

“In many cases it is in the State’s best interest to settle with a taxpayer experiencing financial hardship,” said Commissioner Mattox. “For example, if paying the entire liability means a taxpayer will lose his or her home to foreclosure, it’s clearly in the best interest of the State, as well as the taxpayer, to agree to some form of settlement alternative.”

The Department will also implement a fixed twenty year statute of limitations. Delinquent debt collection rates decrease over time, and debt of an age older than twenty years is typically uncollectible.

HEROES AMONG US Letter to the Editor: As a grandmother of teenagers, I was especially touched by the article in the September 9th Times Union. It was an article about 3 teens who were rescued from a flooding creek on September 7th. One boy was able to get help quickly and Thank God for the Coeymans Hollow Volunteer Fire Department and their EMS Squad for averting what could have been a tragedy. The Squad Captain was in the exact place at the right time and was able to rescue these kids.

Once again, our first responders came through! Looking for heroes? We don’t need to look too far. They are right here among us; our family, friends and neighbors.

The Battle of the Teen Bands was a three day event that started with 19 bands in the competition. The judges narrowed it down to 8 bands after the first day and 5 bands played in the finals. Time Machine was the youngest band to compete and they finished in second place missing the top spot by only 2 points on the 4 judges score cards. Time Machine performed, “Working Man” by Rush, “Livin’ After Midnight” by Judas Priest and “It’s Not My Time” by Three Doors Down. They had a very busy summer performing at many parties and events, two of which were held at Appletini’s and Jillian’s in Albany. The event they are most proud of participating in was the benefit concert at Columbia High School for Columbia graduate, Laura Casellini and her family. “Time Machine” and two other EGCSD teen bands (“Cass & Emma” and “Famous Last Words”) helped raise over $3,000 for Columbia graduate, Laura Casellini and her family. Time Machine’s Battle of the Teen Bands performance and Laura’s benefit video piece can be viewed on YouTube by entering in “Time Machine East Greenbush” in YouTube’s search engine.

It is that time of year that the flags cascading off the poles will be taken down by the Highway Dept. I will pick the flags up at garage, remove flags from the staffs, properly discard any damaged flags and wash all the rest to hang them out to air dry before folding them to be stored for next year. I’d like to thank Geri Ryan and Charlotte Foster for letting me borrow their clothes lines. I tell you this because so many people have asked on how it is done every year. Oh, I might add that I also put oxy clean in the wash to keep them shiny white. The staffs will be wet wiped down unless it is in need of a new coat of paint, then stored.

This seems very old fashioned. But truly there is no magic on how it is done, just a lot of work that Geri Ryan my mother has helped me with every aspect on getting the job done. On the other side of the coin is that none of this work could be done without the support from local businesses and individuals whom many have donated continuously through the years with the high cost that it takes for this community project. EGCSD STUDENTS EARNS NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMI-FINALIST The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has named East Greenbush Central School District Columbia High School seniors Royce Duda and Jacob Isenhart as Semi-Finalists in the 2012 Merit Scholarship competition. The Semi-Finalist talent pool is designated on a state representational basis, and the number of Semi-Finalists in each state is proportional to its percentage of the national total graduating seniors. To date, only 16,000 students, nationwide, have received this honor.

National Semi-Finalists have earned the highest score in their Verbal and Math PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Scores out of more than 1.2 million program entrants. Their qualifying test scores allow them to continue in the competition for one of the 8,000 Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring of 2012.

The next step for Duda and Isenhart will be to fulfill requirements to advance to Finalist standing. To become a Finalist, SemiFinalists must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by their school principal, and submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test performance. In addition, both students, and a school official, are required to submit a detailed scholarship application, which must also include each student’s self-descriptive essay, and a detailed outline of their participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Merit Program Director of Educational Services, Else-Britt De Long, stated, “Recognition of academically talented students and of the key role played by schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation.

PRINCIPAL East Greenbush Central School Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Education has appointed Cara Talmadge as the Assistant Principal of the Howard L. Goff Middle School. She will be replacing Jennifer Gonyea who took a position with the Bethlehem Central School District. Talmadge comes to the District from the Stillwater Central School District, where she is currently a Living Environment, AP Biology, and a General Science teacher. She also completed a one-year administrative internship with the District. Prior to teaching in Stillwater, she taught in the LaFayette Central School District and the Lansingburgh Central School District.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the State University of New York Oswego, with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a course of study in Elementary Education and Middle School Science Extension. At the State University of New York Plattsburgh (Plattsburgh Branch Campus, Queensbury, New York) she earned her Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction, New York State Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership, as well as her New York State Permanent Certification in Biology and General Science 7-12, and Elementary Pre-K-6 Common Branch.

Education is a family affair for Talmadge. Her brother teaches Science, ELA, and Math; and, her sister-in-law is a second grade teacher. She spends her summers helping her father and brother run a family farm stand.

She is currently residing in Greenwich, New York with her son Lucas who attends Kindergarten. She enjoys running, gardening, reading, listening to music, playing guitar, and performing science experiments with Lucas.

NASSAU SUPERVISORâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S REPORT By: David Fleming Due to the dedication and hard work of Highway Superintendent Fred McCagg and the Nassau Highway Department, Nassau escaped some of Ireneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s destructive powers. The efforts of the highway crew before, during, and after the storm, prevented even greater damage to Nassauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roads and property.

At our last meeting, the Board unanimously approved Local Law No. 2 of 2011. This new law implements many of the changes to our local laws called for in the recently enacted Comprehensive Plan. A copy of this new law is available on the Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website (townofnassau.org). There are a number of simplified sections for applications and other areas of zoning.

Since we have passed this new law, there is no current need for the extension of the large scale construction moratorium in the Town. The moratorium is no longer in effect. We are expecting several construction projects to be proposed shortly that will be subject to the new law.

The Board has set a special meeting for October 4th at 6:30 p.m. for the presentation of the proposed 2012 budget. A great deal of work in this terrible economic climate is going into producing a prudent budget. The recent storm impacts on our budget have increased the difficulty of this task. A public hearing has also been set for the same night at 6:45 p.m. on the Special Permit application of the Qadiri Rifai Tariqa (Q.R.T).

I would like to thank him for agreeing to continue serving his neighbors in this way. Please also note that there are two vacancies on the Town Planning Board. One is for the position of Chairman and the other is for an open term. You may contact my office if you are interested in an appointment to one of these important positions. The Town is also looking for a CDL truck driver for the Highway Department. The website outlines all the details of this position.

At my request, the Town Board has unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the dedication of the Town of Nassau Highway Department and our emergency services partners across the Town for their exceptional response to Irene. WORLD WAR II OBSERVATION POST The Record reported on October 30, 2008 that on November 8, 2008, the only known WWII Observation Post in NYS, which had been reconstructed, would be rededicated in Petersburgh.

Town Supervisor Mason Hubbard said, “In 1939 there was no radar to alert cities to enemy aircraft attacks, so observation posts were manned with people to watch and listen for enemy activity. During the war, the Army Air Force called the posts the ‘eyes and ears of the Air Force’. In early years, observation posts were nothing more than bare hill tops or shacks without any amenities. There were about 16,000 posts throughout the country manned by about 8,000 people.”

Where was the Observation Post in Sand Lake? Gail Lennon Booth gave the answer. Gail’s mother Catherine Kilmer Lennon Hynes, third from the right in the picture, was a spotter. This Air Force Observation Corp building was on the corner of Burden Lake Road, House Road and Orient Avenue. A platform for a ceremony is in front of the building and four persons have “front row” spots on the porch. Town Historian Judy Spencer Rowe received her wings and a certificate of Honorable Service on the twenty-ninth day of May 1944. She was fourteen then and now gives a first-hand account of being a spotter in the town of Petersburgh.

“A small shed was built on a hill in back of our school. The women and older men manned this Air Observation Post.

They reported the flights or a single plane to a center in Albany where they were tracked until they left the section.

Later teamed with older women, I learned how to identify and report the planes by telephone to the center in Albany.

In time, as more people took jobs in war plants and we grew older, school children manned the post after school 4 – 8 p.m. weekdays and on Sunday. Many years later, I met Mary Parker, one of the volunteers who tracked the planes we reported on a large map table until they left our section.”

If you are thinking you might wish to live in a place where religious and secular laws are one and the same, I suggest you research life in Iran, or possibly Saudi-Arabia. It is my personal belief that your Bible is nothing more than quaint historical fiction, but since you quoted passages from it, I will do the same. In Matthew 19:19 (and in many other passages) Jesus is reported to have said: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Though I looked hard, I could not find anyone who reported that he followed up this statement with the qualification: “except for homosexuals”.

CEO TO PROVIDE DISASTER RELIEF SERVICES IN RENSSELAER COUNTY Community Action Agency to Provide Resources to Devastated Communities The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) announced that it will offer disaster relief services to help provide support to Rensselaer County residents devastated by Hurricane Irene.

CEO will provide disaster relief services to the community, including emergency food assistance, clothing, cleaning supplies, appliance replacement, emergency transportation, bed replacement, toiletries, and housing relocation assistance.

The agency will also offer case management, counseling, referrals, and linkage to individuals and families. Referrals and linkage will help people get access to the help they desperately need, both through CEO and other agencies.

“Times like these illustrate the need for the community to come together, mobilize, and make sure that no one goes without basic needs like food, water, or clothing,” Executive Director Karen E. Gordon shared. “As the Community Action Agency in Rensselaer County, CEO has hit the ground running – assessing the needs in the community and making sure the community is aware that we are here to help, and they are not facing this disaster alone.”

CEO is the recipient of CSBG and HEAP funds, assisting the agency with the provision of disaster relief services.

MELVIN ROADS AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL TRYOUT Melvin Roads American Legion baseball will be conducting a try out for talented high school and college players who wish to be considered for the 2012 Melvin Roads American Legion team. The workout session will be conducted on Sunday, September 25th, at 1 PM at Legion Field located at the South end of I-787 next to the St. Rose sports complex. Melvin Roads plays an aggressive 30-35 game schedule while competing in NYS District 3 American Legion. Returning players are requested to attend and participate in the tryout. Players with a birth year of 1993 or sooner are eligible to participate.

Dedication is the middle name of this week’s Athlete of the Week; Ben Leffler is a senior at Averill Park High School.

Nominated by the head football coach, Coach Gobel, Leffler has a 92 GPA and is a great athlete. “He is out on injury right now, but we really miss him on the field. The other boys that are playing his position are doing a great job as well, but we really do miss him out there,” says Gobel.

Ben is a very dedicated scholar athlete. He works really hard in the off season to become faster and stronger. This is Leffler’s fifth year playing football and it is his second year on varsity. He plays offensive guard and defensive end; he is a starter in both positions. His favorite part about the game is being able to work with all his teammates on the field.

This year Ben is taking Advanced Placement Biology, Economics, Participation in Government, Statistics, Cinema and Literature, and Engineering Design and Development. He is a serious student who works as hard on the field as he does in the classroom. He says that his parents have always inspired him and encouraged him to push himself to succeed on the field and in the classroom. He would like to thank them and all of his coaches for their help and motivation both on and off the field.

In his spare time, Leffler enjoys lifting weights and getting stronger. He also likes just relaxing in general. He likes weightlifting so much that he plans on going to college and becoming a strength and conditioning coach. He would also really like to continue playing football in college. “He really is a very hard working kid,” says Gobel.

This season, Leffler’s goal is to go as far as his team can and just have fun playing football with his teammates. Leffler is a quiet kid who brings a loud presence to the field. For him, it is nice and an honor to be recognized for his hard work on the football field, in the weight room, and in the classroom.

We wish Ben and the rest of the Averill Park Varsity football team the best of luck in the remainder of their season.

SOFTBALL COACHES COMING TO MAPLE HILL FOR CLINICS Associate Head Coach Wally King and Assistant Coach Mike Bosch of the Syracuse University softball program will be coming to Maple Hill High School to put on two clinics on Saturday, October 1st. The clinics are open to both players and coaches. One clinic will be for players in grades 4-8 and run from 10:30am to 1:30pm. The other clinic will be for players in grades 9- 12 and run from 2pm-5pm.

AMANDA’S JOURNEY FOUNDATION PLANS THIRD ANNUAL WALK On September 24th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Amanda’s Journey Foundation will present the Third Annual Walk for Mito Awareness at the Crossings of Colonie, (Albany Shaker Rd).

The purpose of the walk is to raise funds for the non-profit Amanda’s Journey Foundation and to raise awareness of diseases of the Mitochondria, genetic disorders that can often be fatal. The foundation is named after a Rensselaer County girl whose courageous fight against Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome inspired all those who knew her.

After her daughter’s passing, Jacki Perrotta became a volunteer representative for the United Mitochrondrial Disease Foundation, the nation’s premier “Mito” organization. In June, she and two A.J.F. volunteers traveled to the national Mitochondrial Disease Conference in Illinois where Amanda’s name was well known, and her fans were legion. It was more proof that a determined teen with a computer, a pen, and a fiercely positive could change lives; even the lives of those she never met.

WALKERS AND PLEDGES NEEDED FOR 2011 CAPITAL REGION AIDS WALK Troy Area United Ministries and the Troy Damien Center are looking for walkers and pledges for the 2011 Capital Region AIDS Walk to be held this year on Saturday, September 24th. This is a major fundraiser for the Troy Damien Center. The center provides social, educational and support opportunities for people and families affected by HIV/AIDS. The center also provides meals, three times a week for clients at the Troy Area United Ministries office, located at 392 Second Street in Troy.

ZUMBA FITNESS PROGRAM The Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch in conjunction with the Troy YMCA, will offer Zumba Fitness classes on Mondays, September 19th – October 24th at 6PM. Come for one hour of fun, aerobic dancing. Burn calories and sculpt your body to exciting international rhythms. This class will be taught by a certified Zumba instructor.

RENSSELAER CITY TEXAN’S 2nd ANNUAL LINE DANCE The City Texan’s were founded in 2010 in an effort to raise funds for “Susan G. Komen”. All proceeds raised go to breast cancer research. City Texan’s, a local organization founded to honor Amy Hulett, a Rensselaer native who now resides in Texas, who is currently fighting this terrible disease.

The City Texan’s held their first line dance in the fall of 2010. It was a major success. The donation goal was not only reached, but doubled!! Grafton Community Library is presenting a series of introductory knitting classes for beginners. No experience is necessary. This class will have techniques, projects, social networking for knitters, great books and whatever else we can fit in. Together, we will be making dishcloths and a hat in time for holiday giving.

Instructor Lynda Holt has twenty-five years of knitting experience. She owns two sheep and is experienced in spinning and using natural dyes to color yarn. Lynda makes her home in Pittstown with her husband, two boys, and her stash of yarn.

The group will meet for six Mondays beginning October 17 through November 28, excluding Halloween on October 31. Class time is 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and materials are provided. Class size is limited and participants must be at least ten years old. Preregistration is required either in person or by calling the library at 279-0580.

SEAMAN SKOPAYKO COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING Navy Seaman Thomas J. Skopayko, son of Wanda L. Skopayko of Troy, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eightweek program, Skopayko completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”.

This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

RESPONSE TO OBAMA EMAIL ABOUT CREATING JOBS Letter to the Editor: I just received an email blast from President Obama in which he urged me to put pressure on Congress to pass his plan to create jobs. I replied: Dear Mr. President: It’s not possible for you to: “…lay out a clear plan to get Americans back to work.” because creating jobs is not a President’s job.

Creating jobs is what I do. I am Main Street America. Even under the best of circumstances, I can do nothing more than create an opportunity for a job. The potential employee is the one who must have the desire to pursue happiness through work. We can only lead a horse to water. We cannot make him drink.

Providing people with free food, free health care, extended unemployment income and other forms of happiness is an incentive to not achieve them through employment. Taxing other workers to provide these entitlements breeds resentment.

Offering tax dollars to me as an incentive to hire from a particular group of people that you would like beholden to you for creating their job will have no effect. What you can give us as President is our freedom. Reduce the tax and regulatory burden on Main Street and we will create the job opportunities. Think of it like chickens and eggs. If you want more eggs, you first need healthy chickens. ROPE MAKING The Poestenkill Historical Society will be starting their fall schedule Tuesday, September 27th, 2011, with a program on the history of Rope Making. Ropesmiths, Dave and Mike, started making historically correct cordage in 1995, after noticing that Civil War Re-enactors were using nylon cordage in their portrayals. From the beginning of history, hemp has been the preferred fiber for rope making in Europe.

The only shortcoming was that, since it came from the stalk of a plant, it was proned to rot if not treated with pine tar. Early 1900’s the production of hemp was outlawed in the U.S as a result from lobbying from oil companies who just came out with a new product — NYLON! Dave and Mike are the only suppliers of hand laid, “tarred” hemp cordage in the New World!! The public is welcome to this free program held in the Poestenkill Town Hall (RT 351) at 7:00PM on Tuesday, Sept. 27th.

MARRIAGE EQUALITY STRENGTHENS NEW YORK’S SOUL Letter to the Editor: Isn’t it ironic? No, I’m not speaking about the 1995 hit by Canadian songstress Alanis Morissette that left us contemplating black flies in our Chardonnay. I’m speaking of Ms. Linda Nasman’s oblivious response to a high schooler’s unapologetic support of marriage equality for all New Yorkers.

Nasman’s assertion the recognition of same-sex marriage, “infringes on my right to believe the Bible and publicly state that belief,” couldn’t be any more laughable if it hadn’t appeared in a letter to the editor for The Advertiser. In fact, she refers to the Holy Bible a total four times, but doesn’t offer an empirical argument to rebut Ms. Lynch’s initial question, “How does samesex marriage affect you?”

Instead, she speaks of Mr. Jerry Buell, a Floridian “Teacher of the Year,” under scrutiny for comparing marriage equality to a “cesspool” online, and then publishing it through Facebook for the entire school district to read. Never mind his class syllabus already declared: “I teach God’s truth, I make very few compromises. If you believe you may have a problem with that, get your schedule changed, ‘cause I ain’t changing!”

Fortunately, as a gay alumnus of Averill Park High School, I’m comforted to know firsthand that neither I, nor allies such as Ms. Lynch, felt captive to a “Christian viewpoint” that the likes of Buell and Nasman are peddling as “tolerance.”

Nasman has the right to freely quote Scripture, and deny she’s cherrypicking from a text permitting daughters to be sold by fathers [Exodus 21:7], execution of anybody caught working Sundays [Exodus 35:2], and death upon anyone dining out at Red Lobster [Leviticus 11:10].

Don’t hide behind the veil of religious faith, and be such a transparent bigot.

ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS Letter to the Editor: Dear Ms. Imbierowicz, You are correct that everyone has a different view and opinions on everything. While I appreciate yours, however, I believe you are missing a very important part of the equation on pregnancies in young women or women who choose to use abortion as birth control, and that is responsibility. I raised a daughter and I suffered 4 late term miscarriages trying to have her. I also worked as a medical assistant in an office that performed abortions and women’s health issues. I watched as healthy young girls had their “mistakes” taken away in an instant and walked out of that office care free. I also watched as other women, both young and old alike trying to have a baby over and over again, without success as others discarded theirs.

Life is not always “happy and easy” as you stated. Sometimes life takes a tough turn that you must deal with in a responsible manner.

In my opinion, a young girl or boy, who is not able to take responsibility for their actions or use proper precautions, should not enter into a relationship they cannot handle.

I believe, aside from a few circumstances, that girls should at least live through the inconvenience of 9 months and adopt the child out to one of those loving people who are trying so desperately to have a child. The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, September 24th, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Road in Stephentown. EGCSD PRELICENSING CLASSES The East Greenbush Central School District’s Continuing Education program announces its next available Five-Hour Pre-Licensing classes.

SCHUYLER MANSION STATE HISTORIC SITE OFFERS SOUTH END WALKING TOUR Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, in conjunction with the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Hudson River Ramble will take place the three latter weekends in September.

For this year’s event, Schuyler Mansion will hold a free South End Walking Tour on Saturday, September 24th, from 10AM to 12noon. Led by City Historian Tony Opalka, the ramble will explore the significant people, places, and changes that have impacted one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. The walking tour will be preceded by a slide presentation at the Albany Public Library’s Howe branch.

On Monday, September 12, 2011, the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) recognized 16 youth who completed the seven-month YouthBuild program.

“This is a great day for our community,” Executive Director Karen E. Gordon stated. “These 16 young people came to YouthBuild without high school diplomas. Today, all have improved their academic achievement, nine have already been accepted into local community colleges, eight have secured employment, and seven have attained their GEDs.” In attendance at the graduation ceremony were Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin and Troy Mayoral Candidate Carmella Mantello, among others, including guest speaker and Empire State College adjunct professor, Richard Smith.

“Our young people deserve someone who can look beyond their rough surfaces and recognize their inner genius. CEO YouthBuild provides that someone for our community’s youth,” Richard Smith shared.

YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that addresses core issues facing low-income communities, such as education, employment, and leadership development. At CEO YouthBuild, low-income youth who dropped out of high school are given a second chance to work toward their GEDs, learn job skills, serve their communities, and transform their lives.

YouthBuild participants constructed a home at 30 Defreest Avenue, Troy that will be sold to a low-income homebuyer.

East Greenbush Central School District’s Bell Top Elementary School has received a donation of backpacks filled with a large assortment of school supplies. On Thursday, September 08, 2011, President Elect Brad Clowe, from the North Greenbush Kiwanis Club, came to Bell Top to deliver the backpacks.

“This is the second consecutive year that this organization has supported our school-community with a donation of back-to school supplies. The Bell Top staff is extremely grateful for the Kiwanis Club’s kind gesture,” said Bell Top principal James McHugh.
