RICK McCABE SEEKS RE-ELECTION for EAST GREENBUSH TOWN SUPERVISOR For those of you who don’t know me, I am Rick McCabe.

My wife, Linda, taught for 33 years in East Greenbush. Our daughters are Megan and Lauren, our son in law is Chief Warrant Officer Jeremy Scheiermeyer of the Army National Guard and our granddaughter is Kendall.

I have been Town Supervisor for 6 years. Before that, I served as Deputy Supervisor and Town Councilman. With a Master’s Degree in Education, I taught and coached in Rensselaer. I was also a radio personality at WGNA. I am proud of my administration’s record. Our economy is growing with the East Campus Tech Park, Fedex, Integrated Liners and Regeneron. We have seen smart residential growth with beautiful neighborhoods. Among our accomplishments are comprehensive planning, the Route 4 Corridor/Linkage study, the GEIS plan, a town Master Plan, trail enhancement, Comprehensive Zoning Laws, environmental impact studies, MS4 Storm enhancement, independent financial audits and Hampton Manor water grants.

Our infrastructure has been upgraded, with 2 new water tanks, a new metering system, sewer and water pipe line improvements, drainage mitigation, ongoing road improvements and solar panels for a greener East Greenbush.

In community services, several areas are notable. A park recreation plan and town park upgrades, new trails, a popular dog park, the Miracle League, increased senior activities and a state-of-the art town website are all serving our residents.

We have created committees, manned by residents, in the areas of Finance, Ethics, a Parks Task Force, and Youth Commission. Also, shared services in water, police, public works, dispatch, and bonding have been initiated with Rensselaer, Schodack, North Greenbush, Rensselaer County and the East Greenbush Schools.

All of these, and more, have been taking place during one of the worst economic downturns we have faced in decades.

Beautiful neighborhoods, growth, opportunity, stable taxes, and increasing services make East Greenbush a great place to live, and one that we are proud to call home.

Expect More from Your Officials VOTE • CIOFFI • FASOLDT • SNIEZYK FIRST DAY AT HOLY SPIRIT’S NURSERY SCHOOL PROGRAM The Town of Poestenkill was heavily impacted by the recent severe weather caused by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. The resultant flooding from these storms washed out roads, eroded land along the Poesten Kill and destroyed several homes as well as severely damaging others. There are still many town residents who are struggling to recover from the results of the flooding that ravaged their homes and property.

A collaboration of town organizations will be sponsoring an event, Poestenkill Spirit Day, to raise funds to aid those residents who have been adversely affected.

This benefit is still in the planning stages. Thus far, the program includes a roast beef dinner, sponsored by the town organizations, at the Poestenkill Fire Department, a raffle of items donated by local merchants and a special raffle of a large screen TV. It will also be an opportunity for the community to come together to aid our neighbors.

Please save the date, October 29. As more details become available, they will be announced in The Advertiser and on the Town of Poestenkill website (www.townofpoestenkillny.org) and the Poestenkill Library website (www.poestenkilllibrary.org).

I’m Michael Stufflebeam and have lived in Poestenkill with my high school sweetheart and wife, Kelley Stufflebeam, for 20 years and currently own and operate a General Contracting business. My oldest son, Michael, now attends Albany College of Pharmacy and is in his 5th year of a 6 year program. He has worked at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Sand Lake for the past 6 years. My youngest son, Dylan, is in his 2nd year at Clarkson University on partial academic scholarship and is planning to graduate with a dual major in mechanical and aeronautical engineering.

I am running for highway superintendent and intend to work with the citizens of Poestenkill to implement the right solutions that best serve Poestenkill.

My paramount concern for our town and its people is better and safer roads for everyone. Currently, the town roads are in fair condition, but shoulders, ditches and pot holes need a lot of attention and more work is needed on the county roads. At the end of each winter season, we need a better process to clean up our road sides and intersections. Too much sand and other debris are being left on the road.

It is critical to keep the lines of communication open with our county and state representatives and other state level personnel. I will develop a plan for repairs on our roadways and prioritize road work. I will work cooperatively with other municipalities to improve service and minimize cost, create an efficient organization enabling the highway department to maximize its personnel and assets, and be accountable to you, the residents of Poestenkill.

SUE MANGOLD EAST GREENBUSH TOWN BOARD It has been a year of learning and accomplishment since I was elected to the Town Board last November.

Being part of the progress that has returned local development efforts to active status like the Fed Ex project, and significant expansions at Regeneron and NYSIO, has been very encouraging. I look forward to working toward the completion of more positive projects now in planning and development stages.

I have enjoyed working closely with our Citizen Fiscal Advisory Committee which now reviews monthly budgets and forecasts. I am also pleased that we have a broad-based Citizen Committee now working on a formal Ethics Policy Statement. These activities support my belief in open government with firm cost controls, accountability, and fiscal transparency. My background with an Accounting Degree, and private sector experience as a Fiscal Analyst with GE and RPI, has me well prepared to contribute effectively in these critical areas.

I grew up participating in the life of this community, and raised my own family here. My husband Rob (28 years) and I are both members of the East Greenbush Business Community, and understand all too well the economic challenges people face today.

I love my Town, and I want to continue working to make it better.

My goals for the Town are quite simple although not easy: 1. Keep East Greenbush the wonderful and safe place it is to live.

2. Further strengthen cost controls and fiscal transparency.

3. Move forward via planned smart growth.

4. Ensure the delivery of reliable and enhanced services.

I ask for your support once again this year. I hope for the opportunity to follow through on the positive start we have made, and continue to bring many of those promising prospects to fruition.

I am mindful of the sacrifices we have all had to make in trying financial times. As a Board Member, I weigh the fiscal impact of all Town Board decisions.

TRINITY LITTLE DRESSES GROUP As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the September 14, 2011 legislative meeting.

The meeting came just days after Rensselaer County and much of the Northeast was hit hard by Hurricane Irene. The storm caused flooding, power outages, damage to many homes and businesses, road closures and problems on many farms.

The response by volunteers, emergency responders, local elected officials, and members of public works departments was truly extraordinary. Rensselaer County was able to avoid any loss of life from the storm and residents who were in harm’s way could be moved to safety.

In many cases, those responding to the storm were forced to work around the clock, in tough weather and under demanding conditions. We thank those who responded to the storm with commitment and compassion. This includes many county residents who were dispatched to other areas of the region to perform rescues and recovery operations.

Legislators also approved a change to the county charter to help clear up some potentially contradictory language regarding adoption of the budget. The change is part of an ongoing review of the county charter and related language by legislators.

New York State is the only state to force counties to provide social services that are regarding as required and optional by the federal government. We renewed our request for the state to allow counties the ability to opt-out of services that are not required. Such a move would give counties the ability to save significantly, and help reduce costs for taxpayers for years to come.

In recent months, we have received numerous inquiries from family members who have relatives living in senior care facilities regarding the cost of cable television service. We asked cable companies including Time Warner to review the overall costs charged to seniors at these facilities and consider a reduction.

Legislators also approved resolutions for the repair and improvement of county roads and bridges, and a resolution to improve signage on county roads.

The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, October 11, 2011. The Trinity Lutheran Church, West Sand Lake, T.L.C. (Tender Loving Care) community outreach group will resume the once a month meetings on Saturday, October 16th, from 1 to 3 pm in the Fellowship Hall. We will continue to work on Little Dresses for Africa and Little Britches for Boys projects sent to a national charity for international distribution. Instructions and materials are provided for these simple dresses made from pillowcases, and shorts made from a yard of fabric. Besides sewing, there are many other jobs such as ironing, cutting, and pinning.

Volunteers of all ages from the community are welcome.

If knitting or crocheting is your thing, we have people who crochet afghans and shawls and knit mittens and hats for local distribution. Individual instruction, patterns, and some supplies are provided. Donations of materials and shipping money are appreciated, but the best donation is your time. Come and meet other like minded people who take a few hours once a month to make a difference in the world around us. Letter to the Editor: I can’t let Miss Imbierowicz’s letter on abortion go without a response. In her letter, Miss Imbierowicz states that killing an unborn child is horrible, yet goes on to discuss why abortion is NOT horrible.

It’s sad to see that today’s young people have been taught to believe that it’s okay to decide if baby gets a chance at life. To say that abortion gives girls a “second chance” is to ignore the rights of the unborn child, the most basic unalienable right in this country: the right to life.

People seem to forget that there are other ways to deal with pregnancy, none of which involve the murder of an unborn child. The most obvious is to avoid sex in the first place, since there is no way to 100% guarantee that pregnancy won’t occur. In the event of an unplanned pregnancy, another option is adoption. Adoption allows mothers who are unable to care for the baby to give a child to a family who might otherwise never be able to have children. In situations where pregnancy is the result of an act that wasn’t consensual, why should a baby be punished for someone else’s actions?

Saying that abortion is a way for women to “save” their futures so that life can be “happy and easy” is nothing short of sickening.

It is morally reprehensible to consider murder as a way to get a “new start.” The idea that we have the power and authority to choose whether or not another person gets to live—be it an adult or unborn child—is as erroneous now as it was when Cain slew Able.

I urge Miss Imbierowicz to read Abby Johnson’s book, UNPLANNED. Among the main-street businesses they attack is mine, Greenbush Computer Fare. The website advocates boycotting my business, stating: “Crawmer makes no bones about how much he hates Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, union members, teachers, and state workers. He has used his business to promote his right wing beliefs, plastering political signs on the lawn…”

Untrue - the rare political signs in front of my business were put there by others around election time, including an occasional Democrat, with my permission. I don’t hate Liberals, progressives or anyone else for that matter. I simply inform people of my perspective and defend it. If anyone infers hate from me, I believe it was in their heart to begin with. Many of the people I dearly love are/were Democrats, union members, teachers and state workers, the foremost being my Mother. I clicked on their “contact us” link to see who I should respond to and found several committee members that I recognized as regular customers of mine. Such blasphemy toward their leader! Elsewhere on their site was a phone number to call if you were interested in filling one of the several vacancies on the Democratic Committee. I can understand why there are vacancies and suggest there ought to be more.

The lies, hate and general incivility in political discourse today emanate from Liberals. Their website is a projection of their guilt.

Liberals are a faction of the Democratic, and to a lesser degree, Republican Parties.

Having spent years in the Rensselaer County Taxpayers Association, with fiscally conservative Democrats, Republicans and Independents, I am fully aware that the vast majority of Democrats are not nearly as liberal as their leadership. Their party has been hijacked by the extreme left.

Remember that President Reagan once was a Democrat and that he said he didn’t leave the Party – it was the Party that left him. Liberals truly hate him, and W, and Sarah. October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by the American Cancer Society. In conjunction with that National Program, steps are being taken in the Town of East Greenbush to make residents more familiar with the facts surrounding this serious health threat.

Statistics reveal that 20 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every hour. That means that every three minutes another woman learns she has breast cancer. Also, about five men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each day.

At the September Board meeting, Councilwoman Ginny O’Brien announced that October 19th was being designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Day in the Town. She encouraged residents to wear pink clothing or ribbons when they attend next month’s meeting on that date. Toni Murphy, the Tax Receiver has been talking to co-workers at Town Hall to coordinate a wear pink to work day. In addition to the Town Hall staff wearing the color on that day, she and Town Clerk Linda Kennedy will make pink ribbon lapel pins available to townspeople at the counter in both of their offices.

MAMMOGRAPHY SAVES LIVES The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program “I hope that this month women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal.” For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of whom are women who have had breast cancer. The hotline has been in existence for 31 years. ANNUAL CANCER BENEFIT PIZZA NIGHT AT EAST SCHODACK FIRE COMPANY The East Schodack Fire Company will be hosting our annual cancer benefit on Saturday, October 1st. LOCAL CONGREGATION PLANS BLESSING OF ANIMALS Blooming Grove Reformed Church will host a “Blessing of the Animals” gathering on Sunday, October 2nd, at 11:30AM. The brief gathering will include a prayer and a time for blessing each animal. Everyone is welcome to bring their pets.

This will be the third year that the congregation has hosted a time for people to gather with their animals. CREATING YOUR RESUME USING MICROSOFT WORD The Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch, in conjunction with the Jessica Litwin from Hudson Valley Community College’s Center for Careers and Employment, will offer a two-part computer workshop entitled, “Creating Your Resume Using Microsoft Word.” These one-hour workshops will be held on Saturday, October 15th at 1PM; and on Saturday, October 22nd, at 1PM at the Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch.

The first workshop will cover how to utilize Microsoft Word and its features when creating a resume. The second workshop will involve creating your resume and tips on how to make it look professional.

GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK INVITES ARTISTS TO THE PARK THIS FALL Grafton Lakes State Park invites artists to portray the park’s fall scenery on Sundays from September 18th through October 9th (Columbus Day weekend).

Registered participants in the Art in the Park program will receive free Sunday admission to the park to paint, draw, or photograph in exchange for submitting a piece in the Silent Art Auction at the Winter Festival on January 21, 2012.

The Park’s forests, wildlife, and lakes make for spectacular autumn scenery and an ample supply of inspiration. The pieces will be displayed and auctioned at the Winter Festival, which was attended by nearly 2000 people last year. Artists will split the proceeds of the auction with the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, a group that supports the park’s environmental education programs. Any works that do not sell at the auction will remain on display in the lobby of the park office for the coming year or be returned to the artist.

To sign up, participants can register at the ticket booth on weekends or at the Park office Monday-Friday to receive an Art in the Park pass. You can also call the Park naturalists to register for Art in the Park at 279-1155 and have a pass mailed to you. Space is limited, so call soon to reserve your pass.

It all started with a photo. It was the beginning of World War II. Harold Rowe saw a picture on the front page of the Daily News. It showed a young Chinese girl in a rickshaw with an arm and leg blown off, held by her crying mother. Harold thought if that could happen overseas, it could happen here too. At the time, North Greenbush didn’t have an ambulance service. Residents, especially in Wynantskill had to rely on services from hospitals in Troy.

When Harold approached the Town for funding, they turned him down. Undaunted, he decided to do something himself. He outfitted his dry cleaning delivery truck into a vehicle which could serve a duel purpose as an ambulance. He provided a cot, sheets and blankets, flairs and a first aid kit for the vehicle.

To bystanders the truck must have looked strange: containing dry cleaning in one half and ambulance equipment in the other half.

Two weeks after the ambulance service was officially formed, Harold got his first challenge. In the early morning hours of August 15th, 1942, McLoughlin’s Bar & Grill on Main Avenue blew up. The building was obliterated and Harold had to clear timbers from the bridge near his home on Brookside Avenue in order to get his ambulance to the scene. Harold transported McLoughlin to the hospital but he died from his wounds.

However, the new ambulance service was born.

Harold continued his work for many years, always on call and saving many lives in the process.

His hobby of photography served him later in life. For many years he took portraits for the offices of the Troy Elks Club.

His pictures of town scenes adorn Town Hall today.

His second career as a criminal photographer and Deputy Sheriff with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department lasted many years. He took part in hundreds of autopsies and worked with the North Greenbush Police when they investigated murder cases.

Harold summed up his life by saying he tried to do things for the town and be a “halfway decent citizen”. I think we can all agree he accomplished this. And it all started with a war photo in 1942. Harold died September 17, 2011. May he rest in peace.

LEGISLATURE APPROVES CHARTER CHANGE ON BUDGET ADOPTION The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a charter amendment to clear up a potential inconsistency in the annual budget process that could have threatened the county’s overall fiscal stability. The charter amendment will also help the county avoid interruptions in county services due to unclear language regarding adoption of the county budget.

“This clears up a potential inconsistency in the charter that could have jeopardized county services and the county’s overall fiscal stability,” said Vice Chairman of the Legislature for Finance Phil Danaher.

As originally amended in the mid-1990s, the county charter was changed to require 13 votes whenever a budget is adopted that includes a county property tax increase. However, the section amended said absent 13 votes for a budget that increases taxes, the budget would revert back to the adopted budget under the previous year.

Because of the amount state and federal mandates increase every year, thereby increasing the county budget, a reversion to the previous year’s budget would create a budget gap of tens of millions of dollars. Such a gap would jeopardize the county’s solid financial ratings and result in significant reductions in service.

Under the proposed charter amendment, the budget language will now be revised to state that absent 13 votes, the county spending plan will revert instead to the budget proposed by the County Executive.

“Creating a budget gap of several million dollars, maybe more, due to unclear charter language would mean huge fiscal issues for the county. The new and clearer language ensures the county has a firm set of rules for considering and adopting the budget,” said Danaher.

Legislators note the county charter regarding tax increases is super ceded by the newly-enacted state tax cap.

“The Legislature has been supportive of a tax cap, hopefully accompanied by mandate relief, and recognizes no changes to the charter have any potential for conflict with the state tax cap,” said Danaher.

Nassau’s Village Beautification Committee presents a traditional Oktoberfest celebration on Sunday, October 2nd, at the Village Commons Park. The event runs from 12 noon until 4 p.m. and features traditional German foods, beverages and entertainment. As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the September 14, 2011 legislative meeting.

The meeting followed the events of Hurricane Irene, which caused significant damage throughout Rensselaer County. The heavy storm caused flooding, wind damage, damage to roads and buildings and major power outages across the county.

The storm hit areas of Poestenkill hard, with a number of properties near the Poesten Kill suffering damage. Plank Road was also damaged by the flooding and the county dispatched crews to help repair the road and address some of the flooding.

Several homes on Flint Drive were also damaged.

We had the opportunity to tour some of the damaged areas, and Legislators Fiacco and Desso joined Congressman Chris Gibson and Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin to review the impacts of the storm. Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid also organized a meeting of local officials to discuss relief and recovery efforts, including federal disaster assistance.

The storm prompted an enormous response from local elected officials, emergency responders, public works employees, and residents who came to the aid of those in distress.

Property owners seeking disaster relief assistance can call the legislative office at 270-2880. Information regarding disaster relief assistance can also be found at the county website, www.rensco.com.

At the September 14 legislative meeting, legislators voted to make an important charter change that corrects some potentially confusing language that could have affected budget stability.

Legislators also renewed a request for greater control over certain state mandates in an effort to reduce spending.

Legislators also joined to recognize the 50th anniversary of a Rensselaer County institution, Gene’s Fish Fry on Route 4.

Operated by the Halsey family, Gene’s is celebrating its 50th anniversary of serving delicious fish fry and other warm weather treats.

Legislators also honored George Rogers for his 40 years of work with the South Troy Dodgers youth baseball organization.

George is a resident of District 2 and has helped place a number of players into the professional and collegiate ranks.

FREE DEPRESSION SCREENINGS for NATIONAL DEPRESSION SCREENING DAY The Behavioral Health Services at Samaritan Hospital, in observance of National Depression Screening Day, October 6, will offer free depression screenings to the community, Thursday, Oct. 6, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the hospital located at 2215 Burdett Ave., Troy.

Participants will be screened for a range of common mental health problems which are often undiagnosed, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and mood disorders. All screenings will be anonymous and confidential.

“Anyone can develop depression, regardless of age, race, sex, occupation or social status,” says Scarlet Clement, assistant vice president of Behavioral Health Services at Samaritan Hospital. “Unfortunately, many people who are clinically depressed are never diagnosed and never receive the help they need. We encourage anyone who may be experiencing problems to come get screened, become educated on what warning signs to look for, and get some information and help on how to cope.”

The screenings are open to the public, free of charge.

Information will be available on other mental health topics, such as managing stress, and recognizing the symptoms of various mental health disorders. NORTH GREENBUSH FINALLY GETS TO DECIDE Letter to the Editor: North Greenbush voters will finally have an election in which one candidate is not the only choice in November. The last several elections saw professional politicians working to avoid any competition by trying to put their slate on every party line. Most recently, County Legislator Lou Desso, a registered Conservative loyal to Republicans invaded the Democratic Party Caucus for a Town Board seat and became a Democrat for a day and an election. He was the only choice on the ballot making it impossible for voters to decide whether the Courts were right when they removed him from the Town Board after he won a conflicting seat on the county legislature.

Desso’s friends on the county legislature love conflicts of interest as evidenced by their recent vote to remove HVCC from the county ethics law, so the politically connected could get back on the payroll. This same GOP majority voted to change the county law that the judge enforced to allow Desso to again hold a conflicting elective office on our town board.

His friends on the town board, Al Spain, Kelly Hoffman and Joe Bott promptly put him back on the board.

To make sure voters had no say in the November Election, Desso invaded the Democratic Caucus during a town board meeting he was being paid to attend and missed THREE public hearings as well. After securing the Democratic line away from the Democratic candidate, he ran against himself and surprise, he beat himself and won!

Tongue and cheek aside, this November, Desso will have an opponent and voters will finally decide the wisdom of allowing him to double dip in two elective offices, have substantially more power than is normally conveyed on a politician and try to run North Greenbush government while answering to the politics and ethics of the Rensselaer County Legislature. It is said you can’t serve two masters. ONLINE PAYMENTS IN EAST GREENBUSH – REALLY?!!

In my announcement for candidacy in the September 1st edition of The Advertiser, I presented my ideas to update the East Greenbush Office of Receiver of Taxes by making electronic payments available to the residents. I have researched the service and plan to make available e-payments by check, debit card, and credit card. This service would include the ability to pay over the Internet or over the counter and will provide residents with email notifications for their bills.

I am pleased to hear that Receiver of Taxes incumbent Toni Murphy has taken a portion of my platform to finally offer electronic payment services to residents. On September 21st, the Town Board Meeting adopted electronic payments for town taxes. My question to the residents is this: Why does it take an election to have our town officials react to ideas that should have been implemented years ago? Many nearby municipalities have been providing this service to resident for some time now.

I have also stated that the office should offer some extended weekday hours and Saturday morning hours to allow residents more flexibility for over-the-counter payments and for Notary Services.

NYSSMA RECOGNIZES EGCSD STUDENTS’ MUSICAL TALENTS The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) has named East Greenbush Central School District’s Columbia High School seniors Brian Chiappinelli and Jake Isenhart alternates for its All-State Conference to be held this December in Rochester, New York.

These talented musicians were among thousands who auditioned for this honor last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state.

NYSSMA is the largest state unit of the National Association for Music Education (MENC). Its mission is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing appropriate activities and programs for students.

VANGUARD - ALBANY SYMPHONY’S MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS PROGRAM Vanguard, Albany Symphony is a volunteer organization that works to further the objectives of the Albany Symphony. They do this through educational outreach as well as raising money for the orchestra. One of the education programs is the Musical Instruments Program, which collects “gently used” instruments to be donated to public schools. The instruments are for use by students in the school music program who are not able to provide their own instruments. There is a small budget for instrument repairs, but we hope that most will be usable when received.

This is the beginning of a new school year, and we ask you to please look in your attic, basement or storage closets for musical instruments that your children may have left behind when they moved to their own homes. Or perhaps you played an instrument when you were younger and no longer wish to play.

ST. HENRY’S CYO This is our thirty fifth year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for all of your support thru the years. My motto has always been leave no children behind. If your children need a place to play, I am willing to start a new team up so they will not be disappointed. You do not have to be catholic to play with us.

We also have allowed so many kids that are not in our school district to play with us. We give all of our effort to make our program a great experience for your children. We have a great balance of coaches that are really caring and most of them do not have any children in our program; they are just dedicated.

I have always believed that the program is for the kids and shouldn’t have and politics in it. Our registrations are on October 5th from 6 to 8PM at the high school in front of the gym. LEARN TO SPEED SKATE The Capital District Speed Skating Club has opened its 20112012 season. The Club skates Monday evenings from 6-7:30 at the Knickerbacker Arena in Troy.

This week’s Athlete of the Week loves the kill, on the volleyball court that is. Brianna La Regina is a scholar athlete with a grade point average well above a 90 and is an athlete to watch.

Brianna plays as an outside and middle. Her favorite part of the game is being in the middle of a volley and getting a kill or a block.

La Regina has been playing volleyball for 6 years. She began playing in 7th grade; her reason for starting to play was because she always enjoyed playing with her family when she was younger. She has been playing on the Varsity volleyball team for three years and is a two year starter. Being named a scholar athlete means a lot to Briana because she feels that she works hard when playing volleyball and in the classroom. “I’m happy that my hard work is being noticed,” says Brianna. Head Coach, Dan Fairchild, nominated her because she is a hard working student athlete.

Brianna has a full schedule for her senior year in High School.

She is taking Participation in Government, Economics, Advanced Placement English, Advanced Painting and Drawing, Photography, Senior Art Portfolio, and Statistics. Her favorite school subject, if you couldn’t already guess by her course load, is art; she also really enjoys English. Art has been her hardest course so far this year because she finds it difficult to come up with five different ideas and mess them all together to create them all at once. Due to her love of art, La Regina is planning on majoring in Art Therapy in college. Art Therapy is a type of therapy that allows the patient to express their emotions by using different art techniques. As far as sticking with this major, Brianna says that it could change for the millionth time, but one thing is for sure that she would love to play college volleyball.

In her spare time, Brianna enjoys relaxing, watching TV, sleeping and listening to music. She claims to be a pretty lazy kid, but by her academic records and her dedication to volleyball, it’s hard to call her a lazy kid. La Regina doesn’t take life too seriously and is a very laid back person; volleyball is one of the few things that really gets her excited. She would really like to thank her mom for everything she has done for her. She says, “I owe my mom so much! She always drove me to all my practices that were 40 minutes away and all the tournaments that were hours away. She has supported me in everything I do and I can easily say I owe her a lot of my life.”

Best of luck to Brianna in the remainder of her season and the rest of the Averill Park High School Varsity Volleyball team in their 2011 season.

All Averill Park and Gardner Dickenson School 1st – 8th grade boys and girls are eligible to join APYB programs. The APYB FUNdamental Hoop Camp program runs every Saturday from November 5th, 2011 to February 11th, 2012. This program is a non-competitive, all play program with emphasis on instruction and fun. Sessions are 90 minutes and held in the AMS gyms.

Cost for this program is still only $60 per child with a maximum of $90 per family. Each player receives a T-shirt at the start of the program and is awarded a trophy at our year-end pizza party. 1st & 2nd graders also get a basketball to keep and use.

The clinics are open to both players and coaches. One clinic will be for players in grades 4-8 and run from 10:30am to 1:30pm. The other clinic will be for players in grades 9- 12 and run from 2pm-5pm.

EGCSD TO HOLD FREE TENNIS CLINIC FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-6 The East Greenbush Central School District’s students, in grades 3-6, are invited to participate in a free Tennis Clinic on Saturday, October 15th. The clinic will be held on the tennis courts at Columbia High School from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The students will be introduced to basic tennis strokes and racket skills by the District’s tennis coaching staff, and other selected area tennis professionals. Students should bring a water bottle and a tennis racket. Tennis balls will be provided.

Extra rackets will also be available for use during the clinic.

Accustomed to tax-supported eradication programs, Most offered no protest, whatsoever.

Astoundingly, there are private citizens who participate in this mayhem.

They kill, too, with tacit government approval…immune from prosecution.

What are they thinking?….What do they value?

EGCSD ANNOUNCES UPCOMING BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS The East Greenbush Central School District has announced its upcoming Board of Education meetings. The Board of Education will conduct its Wednesday, October 12th, meeting at the District’s Transportation Center (located at 112 Hayes Road in East Greenbush). Gavin O’Brien of LaSalle Institute was selected to receive a $1,000.00 Cargill Community scholarship for the 2011/2012 school year. Cargill Community Scholarship Program provided this scholarship as a special project administered by the national FFA. Gavin plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Albany College of Pharmacy (NY).

This scholarship is one of 1,521 awarded through the scholarship program administered by National FFA this year.

This year, 129 corporate sponsors generously contributed over $1.9 million to support the program. This is the 27th year that scholarships have been made available by business and industry sponsors to reward and encourage excellence and enable students to pursue their educational goals.

Scholarship recipients were selected from 7,649 applicants from across the country. Selections were based on the applicant’s academic record, school and community activities, work experience, leadership activities and future goals.

ACCOUNTABILITY BEFORE SALVATION “Accountability Before Salvation” is the theme of worship on World Communion Sunday, October 2, 2011, at the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches. The message, in the sermon of that title, based on Matthew 21:33-46, Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will emphasize that we do not have the authority to manage God’s grace; nor do we have control over whom God chooses to give the gift of His Kingdom. Letter to the Editor: Flora Fasoldt, the Democrat candidate for Sand Lake Supervisor, says that if she’s elected, she will give back nearly $15,000 of the Supervisor’s $44,000 full-time salary and save money.

Well, I’m not impressed, since she makes nearly $100,000 as a full-time teacher with Rensselaer County BOCES and she would have to spend considerably more than $15,000 to hire someone to run the town while she’s at work all day.

Fasoldt must have some gall to think the voters are going to believe she can do two full-time jobs at the same time… especially since she is the person who led the charge in 2002 to make the supervisor’s job full-time and to increase the salary accordingly because, in her own words, “He (Supervisor Steve Robelotto) has worked full time since taking the post and has actually saved the town money.” Times Union, 10/16/02.

We visited this very issue a few years ago when then Supervisor Doug Kelley was working in Orlando, Florida, instead of being in town hall; and once the voters found out, they spoke loud and clear that “we want our Supervisor in the office during normal business hours” and fired him after only one term in office.

Apparently, whether Ms. Fasoldt thinks the Supervisor’s job should be full time or part-time depends on who is running. 2011-2012 SPORTING LICENSES AVAILABLE New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced that 2011-2012 hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) may be purchased beginning Monday, August 15. Licenses and permits can be purchased at one of DEC’s 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses can also be ordered by mail or by telephone and via the internet at www.dec.ny.gov. Additionally, anyone – not just hunters and anglers – can help feed the hungry by contributing to the Venison Donation Program at all license issuing outlets. Since 1999, the Venison Donation Coalition has paid for the processing of more than 330 tons of highly nutritious venison, the equivalent of 2.8 million meals served. FOOD COMPACT HIATUS The Nassau Cooperative Community Food Compact will take a four week hiatus starting after the September 21st market.

Ordering will resume on October 22nd and 23rd for the October 26th market. The all-volunteer staff will not be available to run the market during those weeks. We will miss our many walk-in shoppers and will look forward to seeing them again when we reopen. For over a year, Compact members have been picking up their food orders and selling extra produce to walk-in visitors on Wednesday nights at Grace United Methodist Church in Nassau. The public is welcome to stop in and shop from 4-7 pm.

The Compact membership has more than tripled in size in its first year and is currently a finalist for the Locavore Grant to be awarded at the Chatham Fair. Members will be happy to explain the program and answer any questions.

EGCSD SPECIAL EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Each year, the East Greenbush Central School District’s Special Needs Parent Group awards the Mary P. VanDerZee Special Educator of the Year Award to a member of the District’s staff who best displays the characteristics and professionalism of the late Mrs. VanDerZee. According to the Jessica Lansing, the Special Needs Parent Group Chairperson, “Mary VanDerZee was not only the District’s Director of Pupil Personnel, she was a person of great character who had a true calling for the field of special education.”

The Parent Group gives this award annually to a District staff member that has “gone above and beyond for students with disabilities.” This year’s award was presented, at the September 14th Board of Education meeting, to the District’s Green Meadow Elementary School special education teacher Vincenzina Farry.

“We have been doing this for 10 years now; but, I have to say that this year was by far the most difficult as we had over 30 nominations. However, what makes it hard for us, also makes it worthwhile for us. This year’s recipient, Ms. Vincenzina Farry, is without a doubt a truly amazing educator,” said Lansing.

After citing numerous quotes from parents and Ms. Farry’s coworkers, the Special Needs Parent Group invited three of Farry’s former students to speak. The stories they shared were both humorous and heartfelt.
