E.G. TOWN COUNCILMAN PHIL MALONE WINS 3 PARTY ENDORSEMENTS Town Councilman Phi l Malone won both the Independent and Working Families Party endorsements in the September 13th primary. Having already received the Democratic Party endorsement last month Malone now has three lines heading into the November 8th General Election.

“I’m pleased to have three lines this fall, but we have a long road ahead of us,” said Malone “My running-mates and I will continue to knock on doors and ask for taxpayer input and their support in this upcoming election.”

Malone believes his strong record of accomplishments over his first year in office will help him win re-election to a full four-year term. Malone won a one-year term last Fall to fill a vacancy left by a previous board member.

“My fellow board members and myself have accomplished a lot over the last year, and I hope to keep that momentum going for the next four years,” said Malone Over the last year East Greenbush has seen an influx of new businesses and jobs coming into the community. With multimillion dollar projects ongoing at Fed-Ex on Route 4, at Regeneron off Columbia Turnpike and at NYISO off Third Ave extension, the tax base is expanding. In addition to the growing business community, the town has also made several large improvements to roadways and sewer infrastructure.

“Improving roads and other infrastructure will continue to attract business to town; thereby increasing the tax base and shifting the tax burden from the property owners to the new business,” said Malone Malone also noted that sales tax and the mortgage tax are ahead of last year’s budget projections and that over $634,000 was collected from Rensselaer for past water expenses. The Rensselaer water payment was not anticipated as revenue in last year’s budget and a contract has been signed for regular payments on that water bond in the future.

“Residents have seen the progress that has been made in under a year, and I’m confident they’ll be favorable at the polls,” said Malone Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th, from 6am-9pm. Contact the Board of Elections with any questions at 270-2990.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE The Highlight Acting Troupe will be presenting Arsenic and Old Lace written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Ron LeVan. Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy about the sweet old Brewster sisters (Lucy Breyer, Georgia Visconti), who are beloved in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charity which the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoing effort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on their faces—by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked with arsenic. When the sisters’ drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J. Printsky) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably put out—especially since he has just become engaged to Elaine Harper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given the homicidal tendencies of his aunts, the sinister activities of his escapedconvict older brother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptive behavior of younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who is convinced that he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around the house yelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine.

Further complications ensue when the murderous Jonathan Brewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein (Alan Angelo) in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darling aunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed—they’re challenging his own record of murders. The show dates are Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 16 and 23 and 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. CANDIDATE FASOLDT RESPONDS Letter to the Editor: In last week’s Advertiser, Joe Johnson questioned whether I could perform the duties of Town Supervisor. Mr. Johnson didn’t say so, but he is the Town Republican Chairman.

My years in public service as a councilperson, legislator and educator have provided me with skills necessary to meet the demands of the Supervisor’s Office – a job that has always been part-time.

Past Supervisors, with diverse backgrounds and financial circumstances, each managed the office differently. For example, in 2003, I voted in good faith to give a salary increase of $10,000 to Mr. Robelotto making his salary $35,202.

In return, he agreed to serve in two positions - Supervisor and Building Inspector. This agreement didn’t work out.

The Town Board later learned that he was operating his own company during the week in addition to working on Friday’s and weekends for another business. He ceased performing the duties he had agreed to; but continued to increase his salary to $44,000 while adding positions to the town workforce. For these and other reasons, the Democrats declined to endorse him, laying the groundwork for his conversion to another political party. I don’t think that’s the kind of full-time Supervisor people want or deserve.

I will do whatever it takes to ensure that the duties of this office are faithfully fulfilled – being informative and accessible as I have always been. I will reduce the Supervisor’s salary significantly – restoring it to an affordable level. I have no intentions of hiring anyone.

Taxpayers demand value for the money they pay officials.

They are tired of ‘politics as usual’ at their expense. Last week’s article forces me to respond and distracts from the real debate we are all entitled to have on the future of Sand Lake.

Challenging times call for local officials to be creative, responsive and visionary leaders with a work ethic and determination that is untiring. Residents of Sand Lake will not and should not tolerate incompetence, laziness and indecision. NORTH GREENBUSH COUNCILMAN LOU DESSO TO SEEK RE-ELECTION “People, not Politics” Four years ago, North Greenbush town government was racked with controversy and legal turmoil, and residents were burdened by a debt of over $400,000.

Concerned about the future of a town they love, a bipartisan group of residents came together and decided to make a difference. One of those, Louis J. Desso, was driven by a desire to give back to a community that has given so much to the Desso family.

Now, four years later, Desso and a bi-partisan team of public servants have compiled an impressive record. There has been no tax increase during the past four years, the debt inherited from the previous Town Board has been erased, and important town services have been improved.

“I ran on a promise that reducing the financial burden carried by taxpayers would be my number one priority and that I would work hard to ensure budget stability. I believe I have made good on that promise and will continue to do so if re-elected”, stated Desso.

Recently, Desso renegotiated the Town’s sales tax revenue formula with the county netting over $200,000/yr. for the Town and supported restoration of county funding for the North Greenbush library.

Along with protecting taxpayers, Desso and the bi-partisan team have also revitalized the town’s youth and summer camp programs, staged a series of summer concerts that brings the community together, and worked in a cooperative and noncontroversial manner. “We are proud that we have been able to protect taxpayers, provide and improve needed services and protect the special qualities that make North Greenbush such a great place to live. We have done this by focusing on the needs of the people, not the politicians,” said Desso.

“That sums up my philosophy in governing. It’s about people, not politics,” he added.

Desso and his wife Deb have been proud to call North Greenbush home for three decades, and proud to have raised their family, including son Jon, a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and daughter Jamie, a graduate of Russell Sage.

Deb and Lou recently celebrated the birth of their granddaughter Camilla and grandson Nicholas.

During John Glasser’s 20 years on the Town Board, he has taken the lead or supported important initiatives such as; secured $15k grant for updates to the Town Beach, improvements to the Butler Park Stage area, creating the doggie walking path at Butler Park, approving needed repairs and improvements to Town Hall, acquisition of solar lighting, and so much, much more while at the same time doing everything to keep town taxes low. As Sand Lake has changed over the last 20-plus years, and Town Board members have come and gone, John Glasser has been a steady, fiscally conservative hand on the tiller of town government.

DOWDS SEEKS RE-ELECTION AS SCHODACK SUPERVISOR Following two years where fiscally conservative policies produced positive results for the town, Schodack Supervisor Dennis Dowds is seeking re-election.

During Dowds’ first term, town taxes have been stabilized and spending controlled. Schodack also saw an upgrade in the town’s bond rating despite the ongoing national recession. Important town services were maintained during the tough fiscal times.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Dowds relied on his decades of private sector experience to carefully manage town finances.

“We have been able to produce some solid results for our taxpayers despite the recession and strengthened the town’s overall fiscal position,” said Dowds.

The upgrade in the town’s bond rating is important because it will help encourage new businesses and employers to come to Schodack. Respected financial analysts Moody’s upgraded the town’s bond rating from A1 to Aa3, one of the highest ratings available for municipalities.

“The strong fiscal showing by the town gives us a platform to bring new jobs and opportunity to our town and enhance quality of life in neighborhoods throughout Schodack,” Dowds said.

Dowds has extensive private sector management and marketing experience, having worked in management-level positions with companies including AT&T and NYNEX, and having owned two small businesses. That experience will be invaluable in reviewing town budgets and fiscal issues and ensuring residents effectively receive needed services.

Dowds has also served as a part-time professor at Hudson Valley Community College and on occasion Sage Graduate School; and has been a part-time professor at Columbia-Greene Community College, University of South Carolina and Pace University. His public sector experience also includes twenty years as a fire commissioner and a director of the New York State Association of Fire Districts.

Dowds is a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army’s First Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. He earned a master’s degree from Fordham University and a bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York.

From 2003 to 2005, Dowds also served as a member of the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals. He and his wife Sue are proud to call Schodack home and be involved in the community.

SMITH RUNS FOR NORTH GREENBUSH SUPERVISOR Charles Smith of Wynantskill is running for North Greenbush Town Supervisor after a decisive victory against professional politicians who tried to run the same candidate on all ballot lines.

Despite getting into the race late after an unexpected withdrawal of another candidate, Smith secured a place on the ballot and preserved the right of voters to choose between candidates rather than having one candidate imposed on them.

“I am extremely grateful to voters who listened and went to the polls to ensure North Greenbush would have a real election with choices for all voters. It is my intention to represent every town resident by bringing a new direction that emphasizes real progress on the issues our community faces, stated Smith.

Smith identified a number of concerns he and his team intend to address to improve the quality of life in North Greenbush. Getting action on the building of the I-90 connector is critical to relieving long commutes and creating new growth and jobs along the corridor leading to the RPI Tech Park. The project has languished too long and the federal funds set aside for it may disappear if we don’t move.

Other issues include solutions to the constant flooding along the Wynantskill Creek which is a major problem for so many home owners. Smith stated his intention to make certain Highway Department funds are not spent on other town departments so that Highway Superintendent Mark Premo has the money he needs to improve the infrastructure and address the flooding.

Smith also listed other concerns he will address including using a $35,000 State grant to revitalize Main Avenue before it too is lost due to inaction. It is also vitally important that the town properly equip the Police Department with new cars on a set schedule for safety and avoidance of costly maintenance.

Smith is a business professional and is running with Ernest Kern and Andria Fisher for Council, Mark Premo Highway Superintendent and Michael Derevlaney for Receiver of Taxes.

He resides in Wynantskill with his wife Pat and has two children attending their alma matter, Siena College.

This play is based on the life of an actual fugitive slave, Charles Nalle, who escaped to the Sand Lake area shortly before the Civil War and whose two subsequent arrests were both followed by rescues by local citizens. In the play, important moments from Charles Nalle’s life are remembered by his son during meetings with a white man at a Troy restaurant in 1932, with significant consequences. About a dozen roles are available for actors of different races, genders, and ages. There will be one weekend of performances, January 27-29, 2012.

Rehearsals will begin in early November, with breaks over Thanksgiving weekend and during the December 22 through January 2 period. Weekday rehearsals will be two to three hours, beginning at 7pm; weekend rehearsals - on 12/4, 1/8, 1/15, and 1/22 - will begin at 5pm. Production Dates: January 27 - 29, 2012.

A decision had to be made by 8am, and unfortunately at that point, it was raining too heavily for several of our rented items to be set up, with forecasted winds and rain throughout the remainder of the day. Along with the poor conditions of the park due to rain overnight, there could have been potential electrical issues and it was a matter of safety and convenience for the vendors, bands and the local families. No one is more disappointed to report this than me, and I graciously thank everyone who was planning on participating and attending this event. When preparing for an event of this capacity, it makes it very difficult to schedule a make-up day as many vendors and rented items were scheduled precisely on the original date. Hopefully, we will have better luck in years to come and remember to continue patronizing local businesses and farms in our town. PREMO ISSUES BUDGET WARNING North Greenbush Highway Superintendent Mark Premo has reacted to the 2012 Budget with a warning to taxpayers. Last year the Town Board took more than $71,000 in Highway PILOT funds from the Highway Department to pay for a General Fund spending spree rather than to accept the proposed cuts of the Supervisor.

During the year, I have watched the fund balances in the Highway Budget change without my knowledge or my approval.

The numbers have changed without my approval or transfer resolutions from the Town Board. Premo noted that more than $370,000 in set aside highway funds were in his budget at the beginning of last year and in the last few months, balance sheets have shown amounts as low as minus $90,000 one week and plus $50,000 the next.

While I was able to submit a budget proposal for 2012 that should not raise the Highway Tax rate, which is a separate tax fund from the General Fund, my warnings not to use the Highway PILOT Funds for General Fund expenses will force a significant shortfall in the next budget (2013) with no cushion in 2012 for unexpected occurrences.

It appears the Town Board has used most of the Highway Fund Balance leaving us in an unacceptable cash position for 2012 and beyond.

The Town Board should take responsibility for the money they needed to fund their spending in Town Hall and to stop taking Highway PILOT Funds to pay these expenses. Now I do not have funds needed to address added expenses of increased health, pension and contract costs expected and forecasted by the State Comptroller.

My department provides services to the developments appearing all over town. Many receive tax breaks from the county, and we receive no direct tax revenue to provide those services. Instead, we rely on PILOT (Payments in lieu of taxes) money to provide services and plan for our future which had included building a long needed addition to our garage. It appears that plan is gone because the money to build it was taken from us. ~Mark Premo, N.G. ERNEST KERN FOR NORTH GREENBUSH TOWN COUNCIL Ernest Kern of Wynantskill is a candidate for the North Greenbush Town Board in the November election. He represents a generation of senior citizens who are impacted most of all by high taxes in our State. He is 75 years old and is retired from the Times Union where he worked as a computer technician. He is a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. Ernie is also an active member of St. Jude’s Church where he is an usher.

As a former Councilman who served on the Town Board for four years, he is familiar with town government and will not hold a conflicting elective office on the county legislature or anywhere else. “My only service will be to the taxpayers of North Greenbush, not the politics of the Rensselaer County Legislature”, stated Kern.

Mr. Kern and his running mates want to bring real progress to North Greenbush. His goals include action on the stagnant I-90 Connector to reduce commute times and bring new jobs and growth to the RPI Tech Park at the connector’s end. He also wants progress on the eyesore at the 4 and 43 intersection, which the current majority has allowed to become a vacant lot instead of a retail complex.

Kern also wants a solution to the persistent flooding that occurs on the Wynantskill Creek that is a yearly ritual. He will enlist the Army Corp of Engineers and ENCON to help Highway Superintendent Mark Premo in a resolution to the problem. In addition, he will vote to implement a long ignored $35,000 State Grant to revitalize the Wynantskill business district.

As a long time volunteer member of the Town Highway Committee, Kern will stop the continued spending of Highway Department PILOT funds to pay for non highway related expenses. The current majority has consistently taken this money instead of allowing Mr. Premo to budget it within his department.

MICHAEL KENNEY SEEKS RE-ELECTION TO PROTECT SCHODACK TAXPAYERS Michael Kenney is seeking reelection to the Schodack Town Board, citing progress over the past year in management of town finances and work to protect town taxpayers.

During the past year with Kenney serving as a member of the Town Board, the town has continued to put in place fiscally conservative policies and stabilize town taxes.

Careful budgeting by Schodack has also maintained important town services in the face of a national recession.

The town’s fiscally conservative policies helped generate an upgrade in the town’s credit rating in 2011. Moody’s, a respected financial analyst, raised the town’s bond rating from A1 to Aa3.

“We have worked hard to control spending and keep taxes stable. Those efforts are generating positive results for Schodack, as seen by the upgrade of the town’s bond rating,” said Kenney.

“By keeping taxes stable and improving the town’s financial management, we have laid the groundwork to attract new business to our town. At the same time, maintaining town services helps us safeguard quality of life in Schodack,” added Kenney.

Kenney was first appointed to serve as a member of the Town Board following the passing of board member Ken Stinner and won election in 2010 to fill out the remaining year of Stinner’s term. Following his appointment to the Town Board, Kenney also helped coordinate the establishment of a Town Hall memorial to Stinner.

Giving back to the community has been a priority for Kenney.

Several years ago, Kenney led a volunteer effort to build a new, safer and more accessible playground at Green Meadow Elementary School. The project took two years and Kenney helped coordinate fundraising, planning and construction of the sprawling play area.

A lifelong resident of the area, Kenney is a graduate of Columbia High School. He and his wife Tracey are the parents of two daughters. “I am proud to call Schodack home and want to ensure it remains a great place to live, work and raise a family,” said Kenney.

The Averill Park Fire Department Encourages Residents to Keep their Homes Safe During Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2011 What’s the best way to protect your family from fire? Be ahead of the game, of course. That’s why the Averill Park Fire Department is teaming up with NFPA during the October 9-15, 2011, to let our community know: “It’s Fire Prevention Week.

Protect your Family from Fire!” This year’s campaign focuses on preventing the leading causes of home fires — cooking, heating and electrical equipment, as well as candles and smoking materials. Additionally, it urges people to protect their homes and families with life-saving technology and planning. ”In 2009, 2,565 people died in home fires. Nearly all of these deaths could have been prevented by taking a few simple precautions like having working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan, keeping things that can burn away from the stove and always turning off space heaters before going to bed,” says Paul Glasser, Chief of the Averill Park Fire Department.

“Fire is a dangerous opponent, but by anticipating the hazards, you are much less likely to be one of the nearly 13,000 people injured in home fires each year.”

Averill Park Fire Department offers the following tips for protecting your home and family from fire: • Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including the basement).

• Interconnect all smoke alarms in the home so when one sounds, they all sound.

• Test smoke alarms at least monthly and replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond when tested.

• Make sure everyone in your home knows how to respond if the smoke alarm sounds.

• Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible ways out. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

LEGISLATURE TEAMS UP WITH ELOT FOR ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY The Rensselaer County Legislature will again team up with Troy business eLot to sponsor an electronics recycling day on October 22, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid and Legislator Alex Shannon announced. The electronics recycling event will be the sixth jointly sponsored by Rensselaer County and eLot. Participation in the past electronics recycling days has been outstanding. “We have had great success with the past ffive electronics recycling days and invite residents to participate in the event on October 22,” said Shannon. “These recycling events have proven to be a great way to safely recycle unwanted electronics and appliances. We are happy to continue with our partnership with eLot in sponsoring these important events,” said Legislator Judith Breselor.

The sixth electronics recycling day will be held Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the eLot location on Main Street in South Troy.

Residents can drop off appliances and electronics for free.

There will be a $20 charge each for television and no console TVs will be accepted. Lamps are subject to a charge.

The event is organized by the county Environmental Management Council, which is an office of the County Legislature. For more questions regarding the event, please call the EMC at 270-2888.

Gary Gordon was born and raised in the North Central Neighborhood of Troy, New York. Gordon spent a great deal of his childhood at the Troy Boy’s and Girl’s Club and was elected into their Hall of Fame in 2003. After attending St. Patrick’s School, Gordon transferred to the Troy Public School System where he graduated in 1977 from Troy High School. Following graduation, Gordon attended Hudson Valley Community College until 1979 and, during this time, worked in the Public Safety Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he trained and became certified as an emergency medical technician. Gordon began his career with the Troy Police Department and graduated from the Municipal Police Training Council (Police Academy) in 1985. He began his career as an evidence technician in the patrol division.

Throughout his career, Gordon worked in various divisions in the police department including traffic safety, street crimes unit (narcotics); he also was the first Troy Police Officer assigned to the Community Police Unit. Notably, in 1998, Gordon was promoted to Sergeant and received the Silver Shield Award for bravery. Upon being assigned to the Detective Bureau in 2001, Gordon investigated crimes as a Detective Sergeant and was assigned to the Major Crimes Unit shortly thereafter. Gordon remained in that unit until his retirement in 2006.

During his tenure in the Troy Police Department, Gordon received 31 prestigious commendations, but also trained in numerous areas of law enforcement. Gordon is a certified Police Instructor and has, among other places taught at the Zone 5 Police Academy. In 2003, Gordon was an associate of the New York State Police Colonel Williams Homicide Seminar - A very prestigious seminar attended by Investigators throughout the world and presented by the top forensics personnel in the Country.

In 2006, Gordon was appointed as a Confidential Investigator for the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office where he continues to conduct high profile criminal investigations and assures that each individual case is trial ready.

Gary Gordon lives in Brunswick, New York and is married to the former Linda Badolato.

Together they have two children- Michael and Nicole- and two grandchildren: Britney and Mackenzie.

MEET THE TEAM FOR PROGRESS IN EAST GREENBUSH Incumbent Democrats are running for reelection as a team in East Greenbush. Supervisor Rick McCabe, with Councilmembers Phil Malone and Sue Mangold seek the opportunity to build on what has been accomplished, and complete improvement projects that are now under development.

Toni Murphy, Receiver of Taxes has brought steady improvement to that office during her tenure, and is known for her helpful, friendly manner.

Since Sue Mangold, and Phil Malone were elected to join Supervisor McCabe’s administration much has been accomplished by the Democratic Majority on the Board.

Significant Economic Development projects have returned to active status, with Fedex building a regional hub, NYISO’s high tech addition, and Regeneron’s expanding laboratories.

Efficiency and service in Town operations has improved, with increased input from residents. Public Works and infrastructure projects have been upgraded and moved forward, many supported by large outside funding grants. Independent Audits are scheduled annually. A Fiscal Advisory Committee now makes monthly reviews, a broad-based Citizen Committee is developing an Ethics Policy Statement, and the combined Youth/Parks Task Force has revitalized recreation programs and facilities.

All of this and more have been taking place during one of the worst economic downturns the Nation has faced in decades.

Through her years of responsible and responsive service, Toni Murphy has kept her focus on resident’s needs. She computerized the office implementing alternate payment options, most recently electronic transfers or “eChecks’. Toni is Vice President of the NYS Association of Tax Receivers and Collectors.

Beautiful neighborhoods, sensible growth, economic opportunity, stable taxes and increasing services make East Greenbush a great place to live, that this team is proud to call home. MEET RICH MCNALLY CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION RENSSELAER COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY When I decided to seek the position of District Attorney for Rensselaer County a little over four years ago, my wife and I thought long and hard about why we were committing the time and energy to the task. Our two daughters were 10 and 7. There would be a lot of time away from family.

The magnitude of the impact of the office of the District Attorney however cannot be understated.

The job is not about box scores and bluster. The job is a lawyer’s job. Follow the rule of law, seek justice for those whose lives have been disrupted by those who prey upon our children, parents, and loved ones and do justice to the worst of the worst.

The office I lead as your District Attorney has won convictions in some of the most complex criminal cases I have seen in practicing criminal law in the Capital District for over twenty years: Infant Homicides; Serial Sex Offenders; Domestic Violence Homicides and Random Gang Assaults .

I was personally about to begin selecting jurors in an eight year old double homicide case where two men were accused of brutally murdering two people in Troy in 2002, when DNA matched a new suspect. There were countless hours and volumes of work put into that case. We did not rush in. I made the call to dismiss the charges against the wrongfully accused. I directed the investigation that eventually convicted Michael Mosley of the killings that had haunted the parents of two murdered children and this community for nearly a decade. Mosley is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In the meantime I’ve led a team of dedicated attorneys and investigators that have made the criminal justice system in this county work the way it is supposed to. I take pride in our work and our record is proof of our professionalism and effectiveness. I ask for your support and look forward to serving as your District Attorney for the next four years.

Meet Paul Peter, Town Justice – Judge Peter has earned a reputation for fairness and efficiency, resolving thousands of cases in one of the county’s busiest courts. Along with serving as Town Justice, Paul is also owner of Peter’s Dairy Farm.

MEET JACK MAHAR, RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF AND CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION Sheriff Jack Mahar is currently serving his seventh year as Rensselaer County Sheriff. After serving 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, Sheriff Mahar served the Troy Police Department for nearly 28 years where he achieved the rank of Captain and commanded all units within the Department. He is a graduate of SUNY, Empire State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.

Early in his career, Sheriff Mahar was selected by the FBI to serve an Executive Fellowship at FBI Headquarters, Safe Streets Unit.

Sheriff Mahar has received numerous commendations and awards including the Champion for Children Award from the anti-crime group, “Fight Crime: Invest in Kids” and the Project Child Safe and Project Safe Neighborhoods award in recognition of his work on behalf of young people.

In 2011, Sheriff Mahar was elected President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. In this role, he serves as the top liaison between local sheriffs and the State Legislature on issues such as counter-terrorism, drug crimes, jails, EMS and 9-1-1 to name a few.

A member of the Lansingburgh Veterans, the United States Marine Corps League and the Rensselaer County Veterans’ Coalition, the Sheriff’s efforts on behalf of local veterans have been recognized by the Veterans of Stephentown and the United States Air Force.

Sheriff Mahar is a member of TRIAD, a partnership between area senior citizens, law enforcement agencies and community groups that work together to reduce the criminal victimization of senior citizens.

Sheriff Mahar has also been honored by the Rensselaer County Legislature for creating a program which has certified all thirty-one of his Sheriff’s Deputies as Emergency Medical Technicians, making the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office the only law enforcement agency in the State where all deputies are certified EMT’s.

A native of Troy, New York, Sheriff Mahar currently resides in Pittstown with his wife, Selina, and has three children and one grandchild. He enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle as well as aviation and possesses his private pilot’s license.

Meet Dan Fiacco for Town Council Dan will work to protect taxpayers and expand the town base to provide new opportunity and relief to taxpayers. The owner of a successful building and contracting company, Dan has helped build or improve many of the homes and businesses throughout East Greenbush. Dan and wife Jana are the parents of two daughters who being educated in the East Greenbush school system and part of a large family with members throughout town.

Meet Ed Gilbert for Town Council Ed will focus on protecting taxpayers, controlling spending and involvingn residents and their ideas in town government. A manager with the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, Ed has worked for years to help ensure student loans are available to those looking for a better life. Ed and his wife Alice (Sally) are parents of two college-age daughters and Ed frequently attends town meetings.

Meet Corine Sheldon for Receiver of Taxes Corine has years of experience managing finances and accounts, skills that have prepared her to be our next Receiver of Taxes. Corine served as accounts treasurer and handles accounts for her family trucking company.

A resident of our town for 22 years, Corine and her husband Kip are parents of three children, and are active in the community and scholastic sports organizations.

Corine will expand office hours and make it easier and more convenient for residents to handle payments and other matters at her office.

Meet Ray Seney– Town Council: I am seeking re-election to the Nassau Town Council. For the past six years, I have kept a close eye on town spending and services. As Town Supervisor, from 2006 to 2008, I created the Natural Resources Committee, developed legislation to protect our quality of life, established Nassau’s website, and eliminated deficits. As Councilman, I secured $70,000 in funding for Burden Lake Sewer engineering and worked diligently on the new comprehensive plan and zoning legislation. I will continue my efforts to keep taxes reasonable while working hard to protect our environment, health, and welfare.

Meet Guy Forte– Town Council: I have been active in Nassau Village for more than ten years. I serve on the Beautification Committee where I have helped plan and put on many community events. I also serve on the Nassau Village Planning Board. I helped to reestablish the Nassau Sunshine Fund, a no-interest loan program that helps Nassau residents deal with financial emergencies. I am running because I believe that all Nassau communities should be represented on the Council and that I have the judgment necessary to do the job.

Meet Donna Ortgies– Town Clerk: I believe in serving the community. I worked as the Assistant Director and then Director of the Nassau Summer Youth Camp, and I serve on Nassau’s Youth Committee. At my church, I volunteer as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. With a background as an office manager and office assistant, I have the people and office skills to become the new Town Clerk. I look forward to serving the townspeople for many years to come.

Meet Marcelle Gadreault– Collector of Taxes: Since my husband, Kevin, and I bought our home here in 2000, I have really grown to appreciate Nassau’s small town community feel. I am active in the Sutherland School PTO; I serve on the Council Board of the Kid’s Place Preschool and, I’m on the Executive Committee of the Cub Scout Pack 166. I am dedicated, hardworking and have strong organizational skills. I believe I would be a perfect fit for Collector of Taxes. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of Nassau.

DEVIL CATS BASEBALL TRYOUT The Devil Cats will be holding a tryout for their 12U 2012 spring and summer team on Wednesday, October 12th, at 6PM. LEARN TO SPEED SKATE The Capital District Speed Skating Club has opened its 20112012 season. The Club skates Monday evenings from 6-7:30 at the Knickerbacker Arena in Troy.

Hard work and dedication are the ingredients that make up Varsity Golfer, John Fasoldt.

John has been playing golf since he was three years old; he started when his dad made him his first club out of a cut down 7 iron. He has a passion for the game and is a hard working athlete. “He is always trying to improve his game and get better. He is a good leader and a captain on the team this year,” says head varsity coach, Peg Squazzo. “Being a dedicated athlete means that I have to try hard at everything I do. Even when I have a bad day on the course, I go out and try again the next day. I don’t take it so seriously that I get mad about having an off day; I just rub it off and practice what I did wrong the next day. “His favorite part of the game is middle of the match, because he feels that is when he plays his best.

This year, John is taking Economics, Participation in Government, English, Auto Tech 1, Science-Fiction, and Materials and Processing. John’s plans for the future are that he is planning on attending Hudson Valley Community College. He is looking to study in the Auto program, HVAC program, or the Electrical program. Fasoldt would like to continue playing golf in college even though Hudson Valley doesn’t have a team. Besides playing golf, in his spare time, John enjoys going dirt-biking and working on cars. He would like to thank his parents for all of their support and help making him the person he is today. His dad is the person that inspires him to work hard and was the person who inspired him to start playing golf because he is a good player himself.

At the Schenectady Muny Golf Course this season, Fasoldt shot a 41 and had a 320 yard drive. He certainly is an athlete to keep tabs on because of the leaps of improvements that he shows in his game. Best of luck to John and the rest of the Averill Park Varsity Golf team.

MARY’S & SAMARITAN HOSPITALS OFFER HEALTHY HEARTS WALK St. Mary’s Hospital/Seton Health and Samaritan Hospital/ Northeast Health, as part of the Healthy Hearts joint initiative, will offer “Just Walk With a Doc,” featuring a one-mile community walk with a cardiologist, Saturday, Oct. 8, 8 - 10 a.m., Farmer’s Market, Riverfront Park, Troy. The event will kick off with a short educational talk from an area cardiologist who will lead participants in the one-mile walk downtown. Participants will be able to ask medical questions in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. The Just Walk With a Doc program is part of a national initiative designed to educate and encourage physical activity to improve health. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar, elevate mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes.

B.L.C.C. MIXED MEMBER-MEMBER TOURNAMENT Jennifer DiIorio and Tom Mullen shot 73 to win low gross honors in the recent mixed member-member tournament at Burden Lake C. C., while Elizabeth Cushing & Paul Fisher took low net honors with 66.

In this tournament, the format was six holes best ball, six alternate shot and six scramble.

Archie Robinson, tournament chairman, and his partner Valerie Chakea, won the best ball gross portion with 25. John and Therese Buono won low net with 19.

The alternate shot division saw Peg Squazzo and Mark Miller winning gross with 27 and Barb Hansen and bill Madsen net with 21.

Joanne Guynup & Steve Quillinan won the gross scramble portion with 21 and Bob & Kelly Hammond took low net with 17.

NORTHEAST SPARTANS PLAYER DEVELOP. PROGRAM COACHING CLINIC The Northeast Spartans Player Development Program will host a coaching clinic with professional coach Brian McCormick. Coach McCormick has authored thirteen books, is the founder of the Youth Basketball Coaching Association and the creator of the Playmakers Basketball Development League. In addition, Coach McCormick has coached and trained players at all levels and holds numerous speed, strength and conditioning certificates.

The clinic will be held on Sunday, October 30th, at Maple Hill High School from 10-12 o’clock. The cost of the clinic is $30.

The APYB FUNdamental Hoop Camp program runs every Saturday from November 5th, 2011 to February 11th, 2012.

This program is a non-competitive, all play program with emphasis on instruction and fun. Sessions are 90 minutes and held in the AMS gyms.

Cost for this program is still only $60 per child with a maximum of $90 per family. Each player receives a T-shirt at the start of the program and is awarded a trophy at our year-end pizza party. 1st & 2nd graders also get a basketball to keep and use.

ARC IN THE PARK 5K RACE

East Greenbush Central School District’s wrestling coach, Joseph McCabe, was recently inducted into the New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Coach McCabe’s career started at Maple Hill High School as the wrestling coach for 35 years. During that time he compiled 345 wins, 14 Conference Championships, 16 Section II Finalists, and 4 Section II Champions. He joined the East Greenbush Central School District’s Columbia High School wrestling staff in 2003. He currently coaches at the varsity level with Head Coach Anthony Servidone.

“For over 50 years, Coach McCabe has positively influenced thousands of students and has made an impact in their lives.

He is a generous individual who often places others before himself. The impact he has on our District, athletic programs, and our community is immeasurable,” said Michael Leonard, the District’s Director of Athletics.

The East Greenbush Central School District’s students, in grades 3-6, are invited to participate in a free Tennis Clinic on Saturday, October 15th. The clinic will be held on the tennis courts at Columbia High School from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The students will be introduced to basic tennis strokes and racket skills by the District’s tennis coaching staff, and other selected area tennis professionals. Students should bring a water bottle and a tennis racket. Tennis balls will be provided.

Extra rackets will also be available for use during the clinic.

RENSSELAER POP WARNER FOOTBALL GOLF OUTING FUNDRAISER On Monday, October 10, 2011 (Columbus Day Holiday), Rensselaer Pop Warner Football will hold its 23rd Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser. This is the major fundraiser for Rensselaer Pop Warner Football! The outing will be held at the Sycamore Country Club, located on Route 143, Ravena, NY. CROSS ICE/LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY PROGRAM Troy-Albany Youth Hockey Association ( TAYHA) is accepting registrations for its Cross Ice/ Learn to Play Hockey program. This program, recommended for children ages 4-7 yrs, is a 16 week Cross-Ice Hockey development program for young skaters. Each session will include developmental skating skills, stick and puck handling and exciting cross ice scrimmages. Hockey equipment is provided free of charge to the first 30 participants in TAYHA’s Cross Ice/Learn to Play program. The program, meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 am at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Albany.

The Learn to Skate program is offered on Saturdays at 12:30 pm at Frear Park ice rink in Troy. This 16 week program, taught by Dave Randall of North American Hockey Systems is for children with little or no skating experience.

Free loaner hockey equipment is available to the first 30 registrants for Learn to Skate.

The Arc of Rensselaer County presents The “Arc in the Park 5K Race” which will be held on Sunday, October 16th, at the Rensselaer Tech Park in North Greenbush at 10AM. This is our second year of doing a 5K Race and we hope to raise money to support our programs and services for people with intellectual disabilities in our community.

We are looking for people to participate in the “Arc in the Park 5K Race”. You can walk, run or roll (use a wheelchair) in the 5K race. There will also be a 1/2 mile Fun Run/Walk/Roll that is free for all ages at 9:30AM. The race will start at 10AM and the cost if you pre-register is $20, and the first 100 people receive a T-shirt. OVER THE MOUNTAIN THANK YOU On September 23, 24, and 25, members of the Grafton Trail Riders (GTR) and friends participated in the 61st Over the Mountain trail ride. More than 50 horse back riders rode all or part of the 25 mile ride on Saturday, from Petersburgh Pass to the GTR club grounds in Grafton, along with shorter rides in the Grafton State Park on Friday and Sunday. Although the weekend had the potential to be derailed as a result of Hurricane Irene damage to roads and trails, the rides were a huge success, and would not have been possible without the hard work of many. We would like to thank the NYS Department of Transportation, the Towns of Grafton and Petersburgh, Grafton State Park staff, Seagroatt’s Florist, and the individual landowners who allowed us access to their property. Thanks for your part in making this annual event a memorable one for all who participated.

NASSAU FIRE DIST. #1 -2012 BUDGET HEARING

There will be a Public Hearing regarding the 2012 Budget of the Nassau Fire District #1 on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011, at 7PM at the Nassau Firehouse, 26 Chatham Street, Nassau, NY. Copies of the budget are available at the Town Halls of Nassau and Schodack.

The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 8th, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:00 pm and close at 6:00 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

A Free Buffet will be served at the first break.

No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35.00 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10.00 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places.

EGCSD TO HOLD INS./POINT REDUCTION & 5-HOUR PRE-LICENSING The East Greenbush Central School District’s Continuing Education program announces its next available Six-Hour Insurance/Point Reduction and Five-Hour Pre-Licensing classes.

The Six-Hour Driver Training Associates Insurance/Point Reduction course reduces car liability, collision, and no-fault insurance premiums by 10% for 3 years and may remove up to 4 points off your license, as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. It will be held in two evening sessions: Tuesday, October 18th; and Thursday, October 20th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. both evenings.

The Five-Hour Pre-Licensing course is required before an appointment for a road test may be scheduled. It will be held in two consecutive Tuesday evening sessions: October 11th and Tuesday, October 18th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both evenings.

Kathleen Kopaskie ’15 of Rensselaer earned the Valedictorian Scholarship.

Kathleen is the daughter of James and Genine Kopaskie.

Students earn a Valedictorian or Salutatorian Scholarship for graduating first or second in their secondary school class.

Valedictorian Scholarships are valued at full tuition for four years. Salutatorian Scholarships are 75 percent of the tuition for four years.

Theresa Toth of East Greenbush proudly announces the engagement of her daughter Dr. Cynthia Rose Toth to Adrian William Cockeram of Christchurch New Zealand. Cynthia is the granddaughter of Robert and Rose Decker of East Greenbush, and granddaughter of the late Anton and Anna Toth, also of East Greenbush. Cynthia is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and graduated in May 2011 from Sage College.

Cynthia also graduated the PreMed program from Siena College in May 2006 and in addition holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology. Adrian is the son of Brian and Jan Cockeram of Nelson New Zealand. Adrian is the grandson of Herbert and Dorothy Cockeram of Alexandria New Zealand, and the grandson of the Late Douglas and Helen Walker of Southland New Zealand. Adrian has a Masters Degree in Sports Management and is employed as a Registered Contractor in Christchurch New Zealand. An October 2012 wedding is planned. The couple plans to reside in Christchurch, New Zealand.
