POESTENKILL SPIRIT DAY UPDATE The Poestenkill Spirit Day Roast Beef Dinner on October 29th will be sponsored by the Poestenkill Business Association. Reservations may be made by calling 279-6680.

He has run and maintained the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day since its reintroduction. He has introduced free electronics recycling and Tire Recycling Days and is an active member of the Highway and Youth Committees.

Working with Supervisor Fleming, Ron has devoted many hours to the Burden Lake Sewer Project, Loeffel Waste Site clean-up efforts and emergency preparedness. Ron is committed to the proactive plan for Nassau to continue to: provide an open and fiscally conservative town management and preserve the character of Nassau. Letter to the Editor: My opponent in this year’s town election has questioned how I plan to manage the position of Supervisor for Sand Lake. I’m happy to answer.

Communication and accessibility are top priorities. I will have office hours when the majority of residents in our community are available – before and after working hours, as well as nights and weekends. There are many days that I will be on hand at Town Hall. I will have monthly informal gatherings with the community to engage residents on town issues and concerns.

I will bring back my regular For Your Information column in The Advertiser, so townspeople can keep informed of Town Board actions and issues. Outreach to community groups, organizations and agencies will be routine.

Communication with department heads has never been an issue and will not be an issue. My opponent should know that department heads report to the Town Board – not to the Supervisor.

I am eager to engage in the hard work and planning necessary to tackle important improvements for our town right away, some include: • Supporting quality of life programs – community van services, veterans, businesses, emergency services, seniors, youth, arts, and history; • Partnering with municipalities to find ways to advance sewer, water and gas; • Examining budget line items and contracts to eliminate all waste and duplication – starting with cutting the Supervisor’s salary significantly; • Rebuilding our town webpage to promote our community and reflect a higher level of professionalism and easy access to information; • Taking full advantage of current technology by webcasting meetings and bringing town government to people; • Implementing our new, modern zoning code and updating our town maps; • Seeking all available grants from state and federal sources to bring improvements to our town without adding to our own expenses, and • Bringing good planning practices and economic development to our community.

This political domination is what you voted against 6 years ago, and it was your vote then that has given us the opportunity for a new comprehensive plan, updated zoning regulations, effective code enforcement, open government, an opportunity for lake-front sewers, protected water aquifers, and many other initiatives that I spear-headed.

In audio recordings of meetings, you will hear my voice constantly working for you while the majority stays silent and rubber stamps everything. I now get berated by board members when I question processes that could get us into financial or legal troubles. They simply want to go home early. I say, “Send them home.” There is much work to be done and I have a proven record that shows I am capable of doing it.

MARCELLE GADREAULT ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY for NASSAU TAX COLLECTOR I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Marcelle Gadreault and I am running for Collector of Taxes for the Town of Nassau.

Since my husband, Kevin, and I bought our home here in 2000, I have really grown to appreciate the small town sense of community here in Nassau.

We have two young sons, Benjamin age 8 and Nicholas age 4, and I have had the pleasure of volunteering in many of their activities.

Along with another parent, I operate the school banking program for the students of Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School. I am a frequent P.T.O. volunteer with activities such as our holiday gift buying shop for the students, book fairs and picture day.

I also serve on the Council Board of the Kid’s Place Preschool.

I serve as the Field Trip Coordinator for our school. And I have also held the position of Maintenance Coordinator.

I am the Advancements Coordinator for Cub Scout Pack 166 and recently have taken on a greater role in the Executive Committee as we work to recruit additional adult volunteers.

I am dedicated, hardworking and have demonstrated strong organizational skills managing several volunteer activities at the same time and feel that I would be a perfect fit for Collector of Taxes. THE RESIDENTS OF SAND LAKE DESERVE BETTER Letter to the Editor: I was very upset to see Mr. Robelotto’s letter in last week’s Advertiser. I feel I need to respond. He claimed that I “spied” on him by copying his mail when he was Supervisor. I dutifully followed the town policy in effect at that time. I opened, copied and distributed the mail to all proper parties.

Mr. Robelotto should know that non-confidential correspondence addressed to elected officials does not belong to them – these are public documents and records. Anyone can have access to them. Good government is transparent.

Worse, he claims that my “negligence” caused the town to lose the recent law suit challenging our zoning. This is absolutely untrue. He refers to a document that he claims was missing from town records. I filed whatever I was directed to file.

What Mr. Robelotto fails to note is that the document was fully available to the Town Attorney. If she had wanted to submit it to the court, she could have.

Since I am not running for office, I do not understand why Mr. Robelotto feels it is helpful to his candidacy to attack me.

It is unfortunate Mr. Robelotto feels he has to resort to finger -pointing, bullying and false accusations. Kathryn “Katie” Connolly has been North Greenbush Town Clerk for the past 20 years. In this time, she has gladly dedicated herself to serving you, the residents of North Greenbush.

Katie has had the honor of serving as the President of the Rensselaer County Town Clerk’s Association for the past 20 years.

Over her years of service as your Town Clerk, she has been a member of the Ambulance Commission, Recreation Committee and the North Greenbush Industrial Development Agency.

Katie is an Honorary Member of the North Greenbush Ambulance Association and the Defreestville Fire Department. She was the Chairman of the fundraiser for the Playground at the Town Offices and is currently the Chairman of the North Greenbush Memorial Day Parade and has been for the last 20 years.

Katie has secured over 100,000 Dollars in grants for the Clerk’s office for technology and records management, as well as writing the first grant for the Cops on the Street program that provided the Town with the funding for new police officers.

Katie has served you as the Licensing Officer for the Town, Registrar of Vital Statistics, Filing Officer, Permit Issuing Agent and Records Management Officer.

Katie is a graduate of Wynantskill schools and has a Bachelors Degree from Siena College.

Katie has lived in North Greenbush all her life and has a wonderful son Ryan. Katie is also proud to be the daughter of Doreen and the late Tom Connolly of Wynantskill.

SCHODACK DEMOCRATS SET MEET THE CANDIDATE NIGHT Linda Underwood, candidate for a seat on the Schodack Town Board, will be available for an informal Meet the Candidate Night on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Peter Andrews VFW Post on Scott Avenue in the Village of Castleton.

The event was organized after the traditional Meet the Candidates Night sponsored by the nonpartisan Schodack Planning and Development Association and moderated by the League of Women Voters was cancelled because the Republican candidates declined to participate.

“It is troubling that the incumbents refused to take this opportunity to speak with and listen to the residents of Schodack, but their decision will not stop me from following though with such an essential event,” Underwood said. “I welcome the opportunity to speak with community members because I feel the foundation of democracy is an informed electorate and responsive elected officials. It is important for residents to get to know the candidates, question their stands on the issues, and express their concerns about the direction the town is going in. Should the incumbents reconsider, they would be more than welcome to attend this event.”

The event will be informal with a brief statement from the candidate and plenty of time for questions and comments from all interested residents. Light refreshments will be served.

A CONFLICT OF INTEREST I am really trying to understand how one of the Republican candidates for the Nassau Town Council can be running for office when she is the domestic partner and housemate of the town’s Highway Superintendent. Isn’t this a conflict of interest?

More than half of my town tax dollars go to the Highway Department. If she is elected, I can’t see how she will be able to vote objectively on any highway matters. How will she be able to ask tough questions when she has to? If she excuses herself from voting on all highway issues, then voters have lost her as their elected representative. And there are lots of other ways this arrangement can get complicated.

I guess a larger question is: do we really want the Nassau Republican Committee and their relatives taking over all the elected jobs down at Town Hall? The Supervisor is the Nassau Republican Committee Chairman. The Deputy Supervisor and current Council candidate is a member of the Republican Committee. The Highway Superintendent is a member of the Republican Committee. The candidate for Town Clerk is married to a member of the Republican Committee and, as I said before, the other Council candidate lives with the Highway Superintendent.

Common sense tells us that government works best when there are checks and balances. Electing the Republican Committee and their close relations to town office will only serve the members of that small group. But will it work for the town? ~Gloria Boudreau, Nassau Resident Paid Advertisement

HOW CAN NORTH GREENBUSH BE SUPERVISED FROM TROY? Letter to the Editor: One has to wonder what might become of the Town Supervisor’s Office if the next Supervisor holds a FULL TIME job as an employee of the City of Troy? How will a Troy City employee be able to handle the Supervisor’s duties while spending his work days behind a desk in Troy City Hall?

Certainly Troy’s next Mayor will not permit a city employee to do work for North Greenbush on city time.

Candidate Al Spain is paid $73,635 as Troy official. The job of Supervisor, while receiving part-time salary in the mid twenties, requires many more than part-time hours to truly do justice to the position. We have been fortunate that the current Supervisor is retired and has been able to spend nearly fulltime hours attending to these duties. Candidate Charles Smith has indicated his intention to be available in Town Hall during business hours and he will freeze the salary at its current rate for the full two year term. Our Supervisor should be available to us in Town Hall during the day, not City Hall in Troy.

North Greenbush would be better served if our Supervisor had the flexibility to be in Town Hall on Main Avenue during some of our business hours. EAST GREENBUSH SUPERVISOR’S REPORT ByBob RickAngelini McCabe by All of us at Town Hall hope that you had a wonderful summer, and that you enjoy our beautiful northeastern autumn.

This year, our budget process began early. Changes in tax cap laws, the continuing sluggish economic situation, and the many mandates we must address make budget building a challenge.

Very special thanks go to Comptroller Jim Breig, Department heads, Town Board members and all the staff involved in the process for their hard work in presenting a budget that falls below the tax cap while continuing town services and reducing our deficit. We are proud to announce that the budget includes a modest 1% increase for 2012.

Work on the Roundabout is moving forward, for as long as the weather allows. The State DOT assures us that they expect it to be completed in May. We are working closely with the state to ensure the safety of our residents at the site during the winter months.

Thanks to Dave VanWormer and the DPW crew for the great paving and drainage work completed this summer, especially with the extraordinarily wet weather we faced this year.

Our summer program was a great success this year, as evidenced by the many positive comments we received from campers and their parents. Daniela and Anita are already gearing up for a busy fall and winter season.

Special thanks to Carmela for her continued work with the seniors, and for a very successful “Music in the Park” program.

I could not agree more with the article in the Advertisor complimenting our team at the Transfer Station. Joe and Reggie, hired by this administration a number of years ago, have made it a successful operation where everyone feels welcome and respected. Thanks, guys!

Our busiest departments may well be our Planning, Zoning and Building Departments. Rich Benko, Matt Mastin, Joe Cherubino and Hank LaBarba have been filling the void left by the departure of Jim Moore. They are doing a great job in what is becoming a very busy time. They are also handling all of our MS4 concerns, grant writing, and sewer projects. Once again, thank you.

As I always have done, I would like to wish the best of luck to the men and women running for office in the area, and to urge everyone to exercise their right to vote on November 8th.

LINDA UNDERWOOD - INDEPENDENT VOICE for SCHODACK TOWN BOARD Every elected office in America exists so the people are represented in their government. But here in Schodack, our elected officials don’t represent the residents of Schodack, they represent their friends, family members and cronies. You can see this in the appointments they make, who they hire, and planning decisions that are based on connections, not sound planning and zoning principles.

Our taxes have continued to escalate, pushing many people out of their homes because they can’t keep up. In an election year, our elected officials tout how they keep the tax increase low, but they neglect to mention they did that by using savings (fund balance) for operating expenses rather than by cutting spending.

And we all know the result of emptying our bank accounts to pay monthly bills — the bills are still there to be paid the next month and our savings are gone.

The town board incumbents claim to be “fiscal conservatives,” so why has spending continued to escalate? Why did the town board allow a police officer nearing retirement to rack up annual pay of almost $140,000 thanks to unregulated overtime? And why was town record-keeping so shoddy that the same nowretired police officer was able to sue the town for additional overtime, reaching a settlement that cost taxpayers $120,000 more?

It is time for a change in Schodack. It is time for the rest of us to have a real voice on the board. It is time for someone to speak for those of us who are not connected to town powerbrokers. It is time for good, clean commercial development that will help lower property taxes on homeowners and farmers.

It is time for planning decisions to be based on solid planning standards and not who stands to profit from a project.

Only I will be the independent voice on the town board who will hold elected officials accountable.

I can honestly say that I have enjoyed my service as the East Greenbush Receiver of Taxes over the years. The work itself is challenging, as I bear responsibility for the handling and recording of more than $33 million in annual Town Revenues. Throughout my time in this position, I have continually strived to fulfill the mission of the office in an efficient manner, and to be responsive and helpful to all of the residents.

Much has been changed here since I first took office.

Operations have moved from paper transactions to computer based systems. Alternate payment options have been added, with credit card, and electronic transfer programs. The office hours and staffing pattern has been improved. I have been happy with all of these improvements, because people have seen them as a benefit to the public.

Many residents have mentioned that they appreciate being able to review their taxes on-line, from home now, by entering www.basny.com Being in direct contact with so many residents who come to my window, or call in keeps me fully involved in the life of my community. This has always been an important part of my life. My late husband Tim and I raised our two daughters as active members of the East Greenbush Community. Today I am proud to see both of them setting their own family roots as homeowners and involved citizens here in Town.

I have been involved in municipal finance for over 22 years, and have participated in many conferences and training seminars specific to my responsibilities.

I am honored that my professional peers have placed me in the position of Vice President of the NYS Association of Tax Receivers and Collectors.

ANDRIA FISHER FOR NORTH GREENBUSH TOWN COUNCIL Andria Fisher of Bloomingrove Drive has announced her candidacy for the Town Council. Andria holds a Bachelors Degree from Russell Sage and an Associates Degree from HVCC. You may recognize her from the Home Depot where customer service is job one!

She is committed to applying sound business management principles to town government to help the town grow while keeping taxes stable.

Ms. Fisher supports a platform that seeks real progress for North Greenbush in areas which seem unchanged for many years. She believes we need action on the long stagnant I-90 Connector to reduce drive times while producing new jobs and growth to the RPI Tech Park at the connectors end. The connector has long been viewed as crucial to maximize the potential of the Tech Park as the towns economic engine and that will only occur when companies have direct quick access afforded by the connector.

She wants progress at the 4 and 43 intersection, which the current majority has allowed to become a vacant lot for the past several years instead of a retail complex.

Ms. Fisher supports a solution to the persistent flooding that occurs yearly on the Wynantskill Creek and advocates the involvement of state and federal agencies in finding a permanent solution.

Other plans include her determination to accept a dormant $35,000 State Grant to revitalize the Wynantskill business district giving our local business community a chance to take advantage of a new look to attract consumers. She also advocates an end to the current board practice of using Highway Funds to pay for the general expenses of the town.

These monies were being properly managed by Superintendent Premo to build an addition to the garage without borrowing and much of it was transferred away by this majority. She also advocates better planning by budgeting for the purchase of police cars before they require expensive repairs.

I am excited to have this opportunity for public service as part of a team for real progress led by Charles Smith for Supervisor, Ernest Kern for Council, Mark Premo, Highway and Michael Derevlany. Receiver of Taxes.

FARLEY BEGINS AMERICORP TRAINING Justin Farley, a graduate of Troy High School and SUNY Plattsburgh left on October 12th, 2011 for AmeriCorp.

Justin will begin his training in October at the Southwest Region Campus located in Denver, Colorado. For the next ten months he and other members of AmeriCorps will make a difference in many lives, bringing hope to communities across the nation, through service in education, the environment, public safety, human needs, and disaster relief.

Justin is the grandson of Nancy and Arthur Rockwell, both the Rockwell’s can be found working at the Doors of Hope. Nancy is the Coordinator there and Art does whatever is asked of him, both provide community service with a smile.

TAX CAP SHELL GAME Letter to the Editor: With Governor Cuomo garnering so much political capital over his 2% property tax cap, you would think our cities and towns would follow suit. Sadly, such is not the case. It looks suspiciously as though the governor is giving a wink and nod toward local property tax assessors who will raise assessments in order to allow more government spending while the governor creates the illusion of a cap.

What good is a cap on the tax rate if the value of real estate can be artificially inflated?

Such is the experience I’m having in relation to commercial property I own in Schodack.

The property I have used to be a Church and as such, paid no tax. When I purchased the building a mere seven years ago, it went on the tax roll for the first time in decades.

You might think the town would be satisfied with thousands of fresh dollars coming in, but you would be wrong. Their initial tax assessment was much higher than what I actually paid for the property and I had to make my awareness of the heavy assessment known in order to bring it down to a fair and accurate number. My assessment has increased twice since then. The first increase was eighteen percent and this year it went up by another twenty percent.

I protested these draconian increases and was told I was wrong to suggest property values have fallen. Even though then Governor Patterson reduced our STAR exemption based on the State’s acknowledgement of the very real reduction in our property values, Schodack (and you can bet many other municipalities) will actually try to convince you that it’s all in your imagination. Even though banks are foreclosing on more homes, and people are committing suicide in their despair, tax collectors are resolute in their belief that taxpayers should still pay more.

I want to laud the young writers of Averill Park who have been submitting some very articulate letters to the editor here lately.

I have resided in Poestenkill with my family for the past 36 years.

After working for the Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator, I was first elected in 2000. I take my job caring for your roads seriously and serve on the County Highway Superintendant Association board.

I have put down strong roots in the Town of Poestenkill. I am a life member of the Sullivan Jones Post of the VFW. I have served on the Poestenkill Volunteer Fire Company for 35 years.

I serve as Superintendent of the Hillside Cemetery and I am president of the Brookside Cemetery. I am an active member of the Poestenkill Business Association.

As reported in the Times Union in 2005, I am the person responsible for introducing the idea of municipal shared services to repair local roads. This relationship has allowed us to save our taxpayers thousands and allowed us to rapidly respond to emergencies. The Dater Hill Bridge was repaired with an an estimated $100,000 in savings and allowed us to mobilize equipment well beyond our own trucks to respond to the extreme damage Tropical Storm Irene brought to our community.

“PENNIES FROM HEAVEN” JCPenney’s “Pennies from Heaven” program scheduled for October 12th - October 25th at the JCPenney store in Latham Circle Mall will raise proceeds to benefit Troy Boys & Girls Club in downtown Troy. During this period, JCPenney customers are invited to turn small change into “pennies from heaven” by rounding up their purchases and donating the difference to a local afterschool program that provide at-risk children access to life-enriching activities that inspire children to be smart, strong and socially responsible.

Letter to the Editor: As both sides offer their views on town government, we should pause to look back at the facts over the past four years.

The current Town Board Majority is in power in part because they maneuvered themselves into elections without opponents.

This year is different with voters stopping an effort by Mr. Spain to be the only Supervisor candidate on the ballot. He had less luck than County Legislator and Town Councilman Desso who last year left voters no choice in November.

This majority’s record includes voting to award a $30,000 no bid contract to redo a Comprehensive Plan that had been completed at no charge to taxpayers. They fired a respected Youth Director they said was not needed, and then voted $10,000 in overtime to a Building Inspector, the highest paid employee in town hall, to perform the job that “wasn’t needed”.

As town finances and deficit became a hot item, they cooked up false accusations against the Town Comptroller, smearing his reputation, and then fired him. Even when it was clear the accusations were nonsense, the Comptroller was not restored to his job. Instead, they put the Town Assessor in the job, which lasted a week because he could not legally do both, and because he had been charged with an unrelated serious crime still pending in county court.

To keep spending without raising taxes on the General Fund side, the majority took money from the Highway Budget, $71,000 last year alone, in a last second change to the Supervisor’s budget. Today, we find the Highway Superintendent issuing budget warnings that all of his reserves were taken by the Board without his consent and he has no money to build an addition to the garage or absorb projected increases in pensions and insurance. As for the police department, the majority has not allowed a police car purchase in four years creating safety and maintenance issues. Most cars exceed 100,000 miles.

It’s time to decide if this record represents the progress we need in North Greenbush. Salem United Methodist Church of West Sand Lake will be holding a Swiss Steak dinner on Saturday, October 22nd, from 4:30pm till 6:00pm, for the small price of $11 for adults, and a lower cost for children. There is no offseason for this week’s scholar athlete; Nick Hess is a dedicated soccer and basketball player.

He is constantly practicing, playing, and traveling to compete in games and tournaments with the F.C. Dutchman team that is based out of Guilderland. Nick started playing soccer when he was 5 years old and was encouraged by his parents to play. Hess is also a very dedicated student. “Scholar first and athlete shortly behind that,” says Nick when asked about being a scholar athlete. With a 94 GPA and a difficult course load for his senior year, he shows great time management skills and an all around organized kid. He is also a three year captain of the varsity soccer team. This year Hess is taking Spanish 5, Advanced Placement Government and Politics, Advanced Placement English, Advanced Placement Biology and Forensic Science. His favorite subject in school is history.

Next year, Hess is looking to attend Endicott College, St. Lawrence, SUNY Plattsburg, Union College, Brandeis University, or Vassar College; he is undecided about what he would like to study. “I just want to make a difference in the world,” says Hess. Hess is planning on playing soccer and possibly basketball in college though. He finds it to be a great honor to be recognized as a scholar athlete because of all the years of balancing and sports have paid off for him. Hess has his parents to thank for his success. He says that he’d like to thank his dad for always pushing him to do his best and his mom for always being there for him. He would also like to thank Coach Organ for motivating him every day to do his best.

In his spare time, Nick enjoys playing basketball at the YMCA, hanging out with his friends, and spending time with his family.

He has been playing basketball for six years; he has been on the varsity basketball team for three years and the varsity soccer team for four years. His favorite part about playing sports is the brotherhood that he forms with his teammates.

Nick certainly is an athlete to watch; he scored the game winning goal in double overtime to defeat Columbia High School last year and has a total of 27 goals for his high school career so far. Best of luck to Nick and the rest of the Averill Park Varsity Boys Soccer team in the rest of their season.

BOWLING PARTY FOR TOURETTE SYNDROME The local Tourette Syndrome Support Group will host a family bowling party on Sunday, November 13th, from 2-4:30PM at Spare Time Lanes in Latham. The cost is $15 per bowler. Bowlers must pre-register by calling Judy at 384-1765.

TROY ELKS 2011 HOOP SHOOT The 2011 Hoop Shoot will be held on November 19th at the CYO Center located at 237 4th Street in South Troy. Registration starts at 8:15am and competition begins at 9:00am.

The competition is open to both boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13. Contestant’s age groups will be determined by their ages as of April 1, 2012. Proof of age must be provided at the time of registration.

The winner in each age group will be eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot, after which there are competitions at the State, Regional and National level. The National Finals are held in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the top six finalists’ will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

SAND LAKE YOUTH FAMILY SKI/SNOWBOARDING CLUB Informational meeting and sign up will be held Saturday, October 22, from 9am-11:30am at the Sand Lake Town Hall.

The Sand Lake Youth Family Ski/Snowboarding club is designed to allow families to spend time together participating in an activity you love at a reasonable cost. All children need to be supervised by an adult (parent/guardian). Children must be 6 years of age or older to be eligible to take part in lessons.

Proof of age (copy of birth certificate) is required for anyone under the age of eight.

The program runs for 7 weeks on Friday nights starting January 6th and ends February 17th. Lessons run from 5-6 PM and the cost is $145.00 for a lift ticket and lesson or $140.00 for just a lift ticket.

BOATING SAFETY CLASS There will be a Boating Safety Class at the Castleton Boat Club on Saturday, October 22, in Castleton.

It is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break for lunch. It is a basic boating safety class, which is required for anyone in New York to operate a PWC and is recommended for anyone who would like to learn basic boating skills. Anyone over age 10 is welcome, and there is no fee for the class for ages 10 - 18. Anyone over the age of 18 will be required to pay a $10 fee to New York State for the certificate.

ICE SKATING LESSONS EGCSD FOOTBALL PROGRAM GIVES DONATION TO SCHOHARIE SCHOOL The East Greenbush Central School District’s philosophy is School and Community Working Together. The Columbia High School Football Program carried out that philosophy when they decided to help the hurricane and flood ravaged Schoharie Central School District. The football players, together with the Football Booster Club, held numerous coin drops and 50/50 raffles at games. Together they collected $625.

The District’s Athletic Director, Michael Leonard, contacted Jamie Rockhill, Schoharie Central School District’s Athletic Director, and informed him of the donation. A very appreciative Mr. Rockhill said, “Thank you so much for all you have done. Please thank your players and your booster club as well. You have no idea how important this will be to our seniors.”

The donation will be used for the seniors who were victims of the hurricane and cannot afford the cost of the Project Adventure Senior Trip to Howes Cavern. The remainder of the funds will go directly to the families affected by the hurricane.

SENIORS’ MINISTRY TO OFFER EXERCISE PROGRAM Beginning on Oct. 31, the Seniors’ Ministry of Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph Parish, New Lebanon, will offer indoor exercise classes for seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Participants meet in the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall on Mondays and Thursdays from 9-10 am. The hall is located at 732 U.S. Route 20, New Lebanon. A professional trainer directs exercise activities which emphasize stretching, flexibility, balance, and light muscle toning. Individual needs and limitations will be taken into consideration. For those who join the program, incentive prizes are awarded based on time spent walking and exercising. Although a fee of $25.00 is requested for the first 10 weeks (Oct. 31 thru Jan. 13, 2012), no one will be excluded for lack of funds. CROSS ICE/LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY PROGRAM Troy-Albany Youth Hockey Association (TAYHA) is accepting registrations for its Cross Ice/ Learn to Play Hockey program. This pro-gram, recommended for children ages 4-7 yrs, is a 16 week Cross-Ice Hockey development program for young skaters. Each session will include developmental skating skills, stick and puck handling and exciting cross ice scrimmages. Hockey equip-ment is provided free of charge to the first 30 participants in TAYHA’s Cross Ice/Learn to Play program. The program, meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 am at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Albany.

The Learn to Skate program is offered on Saturdays at 12:30 pm at Frear Park ice rink in Troy. This 16 week program, taught

by Dave Randall of North American Hockey Systems is for children with little or no skating experience. Free loaner hockey equipment is available to the first 30 registrants for Learn to Skate. RENSSELAER ELK’S HOOP SHOOT TOURNAMENT On Saturday, November 5th, Rensselaer Elk’s Lodge 2073 will be holding their local hoop shoot tournament. The tournament will be held at Genet Elementary School at 9:30AM. This tournament is for boys and girls ages 813 years old, using April 1, 2012 for the age cut off. For example, if you are 7 years old and will be 8 years old by March 31, 2012 you will be able to shoot in the tournament. If you are 13 years old and will be 14 years old by March 31, 2012, then you cannot shoot in the tournament. The age groups are 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13, in both the boys and girls group.

You do not have to be related to an Elk to shoot in this tournament. It is open to all boys and girls who are in the age groups shown above.

For those who have never shot in the tournament, I would like to let you know, that this is not a basketball game, it is shooting from the foul line. The 8-9 year olds shoot from 4 feet in front of the foul line. All the others shoot from the foul line. First you take 10 shots, and then 15 shots, for a total of 25 shots. The winners in each age group will go on to represent Rensselaer Elks in the district tournament, which will be held at a later date, competing against the winners of the other lodge in our district. There are 4 other tournaments after the district tournament that you have a chance to advance to. They are, the east regional, the state, the tri-state, and finally, the National Hoop Shoot Tournament, where you will compete against the winners from all over the country. The winners of the National Tournament will get their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

You can see what you have a chance of doing. But first, you have to participate in our local tournament and win. You do not have to be a basketball player to participate in the hoop shoot tournament. You just have to be the right age and want to have fun.

NORTHEAST SPARTANS PLAYER DEVELOP. PROGRAM COACHING CLINIC The Northeast Spartans Player Development Program will host a coaching clinic with professional coach Brian McCormick. Coach McCormick has authored thirteen books, is the founder of the Youth Basketball Coaching Association and the creator of the Playmakers Basketball Development League. In addition, Coach McCormick has coached and trained players at all levels and holds numerous speed, strength and conditioning certificates.

RESPONSE TO CANDIDATE FASOLDT Letter to the Editor: Candidate Fasoldt deserves the spin-meister award for her artful dodging in the 10/6 edition of the full-time Supervisor issue and who our town residents will meet with during the day if she is elected. She then backs up her “artful dodge” with the outrageous statement the Supervisor’s job has always been part-time. Not true. The truth is Supervisors Wurtemberger, Regan, Robelotto and Rounds all worked on a full-time basis. And the Town’s payment to the State Retirement System for the Supervisor and Town Clerk is based on full-time employment.

Also not true is Candidate Fasoldt’s claim that Steve Robelotto had a “conversion to another political party” after the Democrats DUMPED him. The truth is the Republican Party offered to crossendorse Steve because of the fantastic job he was doing as Supervisor, but the Democrat bosses (Fasoldt & Cioffi) wanted him gone because he refused to be controlled by them.

Someone with Steve Robelotto’s record of achievement and public service doesn’t come along too often and when it does partisan politics is best set aside for the good of the taxpayers and that is what Republicans tried to do. But the Democrats put partisan politics ahead of good government, said NO to Steve and dumped him; the Republicans said YES and endorsed him.

Candidate Fasoldt’s claim that her years as a legislator and highly paid nearly $100,00 per year teacher prepare her to function as the executive running the town on nights and weekends isn’t supported by history. Probably the best example of the total disconnect between legislative and executive experience is Barack Obama, who, when thrust into the role of “running something - anything” self-imploded into incompetence.

Management experience is the key here. Steve Robelotto has 8 years of management experience running our town and he knows how to get things done. Fasoldt’s promises are worthless, Robelotto’s proven performance is invaluable.

BTW, yes, I am the Republican Chairman; just as Candidate Fasoldt’s running mate Mark Cioffi is the Democrat Chairman.

But you haven’t read that anywhere. Hmmm. You can’t have ~Joe Johnson, Averill Park it both ways.

SHERIFF JACK MAHAR SEEKING RE-ELECTION as RENSS. COUNTY SHERIFF Sheriff Jack Mahar is currently serving his seventh year as Rensselaer County Sheriff. After serving 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, Sheriff Mahar served the Troy Police Department for nearly 28 years where he achieved the rank of Captain and commanded all units within the Department. He is a graduate of SUNY, Empire State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. Early in his career, Sheriff Mahar was selected by the FBI to serve an Executive Fellowship at FBI Headquarters, Safe Streets Unit.

Sheriff Mahar has received numerous commendations and awards including the Champion for Children Award from the anti-crime group, “Fight Crime: Invest in Kids” and the Project Child Safe and Project Safe Neighborhoods award in recognition of his work on behalf of young people. In 2011, Sheriff Mahar was elected President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. In this role, he serves as the top liaison between local sheriffs and the State Legislature on issues such as counter-terrorism, drug crimes, jails, EMS and 9-1-1 to name a few.

A member of the Lansingburgh Veterans, the United States Marine Corps League and the Rensselaer County Veterans’ Coalition, the Sheriff’s efforts on behalf of local veterans have been recognized by the Veterans of Stephentown and the United States Air Force. Sheriff Mahar is a member of TRIAD, a partnership between area senior citizens, law enforcement agencies and community groups that work together to reduce the criminal victimization of senior citizens. Sheriff Mahar has also been honored by the Rensselaer County Legislature for creating a program which has certified all thirty-one of his Sheriff’s Deputies as Emergency Medical Technicians, making the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office the only law enforcement agency in the State where all deputies are certified EMT’s.

A native of Troy, New York, Sheriff Mahar currently resides in Pittstown with his wife, Selina, and has three children and one grandchild. He enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle as well as aviation and possesses his private pilot’s license.

“MANAGEMENT OVERRIDE” COSTS E.G. TAXPAYERS ALMOST $500,000 Letter to the Editor: A year ago, East Greenbush Supervisor McCabe was asserting that the stipends he was discovered passing out had been going on for decades. Back to the ‘70s in one Troy Record interview and the 80s in another. I FOILed for Town records on this matter back to 1990. The Town could only produce material back to 2003, and they gave me Supervisor Angelini’s list for 2003 -2005. It had 6 individuals getting a total of about $25,623 for the three years, or about $8,541 per year. Compare that with Mr. McCabe’s stipend list for 2007-2009, which has 13 individuals getting over $122,800 for the three years, or about $40,940 per year. The number of recipients doubled and the amount increased by a factor of five under McCabe. These disbursements under Angelini and McCabe took place without the required authorization of the Board by Resolution or local law.

Add to this, the payments to a “Town Consultant” without the Board approving the position or setting a pay rate, and you have additional disbursements of about $174,000 without the Board action required by law.

Add to this the restoration of a contract amendment without Board approval to a contract after the Board had specifically excluded (sunset) the provision in specific language in the previous contract, and you have disbursements which cost taxpayers almost $200,000.

The Boards specific actions on financial matters are the internal controls built into the law to protect the interests of the taxpayers. These things are supposed to be done in public for all to see. What we have in just these three examples is the “management override” of internal controls which cost taxpayers almost $500,000 over 4 years. Documents indicate that Mr. McCabe’s actions are responsible for all three. The Town’s employees (patronage employees) in internal control positions didn’t say boo. All they had to say was “where are the Resolutions?” But they didn’t.

ED GILBERT ANSWERS QUESTIONS OF EAST GREENBUSH RESIDENTS I have walked many neighborhoods in East Greenbush over the past four months and have been asked many questions by the residents. I would like to share with all residents the answers to several of these questions.

Why are you running for East Greenbush Town Council?

In a word, Responsibility.

• When our elected officials govern outside of the parameters outlined in our State Constitution, it is time to replace them with people who will adhere to the law and policies adopted by the Town.

• I have attended a great number of Town Board meetings in East Greenbush and have watched in amazement as residents and taxpayers have brought to light mismanagement issues of our town officials, whether it was the distribution of illegal stipends to elected officials, uncollected revenues from valuable scrap metals or improper and possibly illegal benefit add-on’s to employment contracts within the town. Concerned residents have been pointing out these important and disturbing issues to the current administration. The response by our current administration has been “that’s just the way it’s always been done”.

• As a taxpayer and resident I cannot accept that poor excuse any longer. I tried, as did many others, to lobby our elected officials and make changes from the outside and was dismissed as was every other concerned resident.

FOR REAL CHANGE TO OCCUR THE LEADERSHIP MUST CHANGE. What do you plan to do if elected?

• The first priority would be addressing out of control spending within the Town. Wasted spending can be curbed and reformed with more oversight and accountability.

• Another important issue would be an asset inventory. This will provide an accurate accounting of items owned by the Town and another way to address improper spending.

How would you improve the town?

• We need to review our internal control policies, invite the State Comptroller in to help implement sound fiscal policies, like a check and balance system for checks to be issued.

• Stop the abused practice of hiring friends and family for positions that serve no purpose to taxpayers.

• To improve our town, decisions made by the town board members must benefit ALL of the town residents and not just the select few of the current administration.

• Our public parks need to be updated and maintained. This action will attract our residents to use the parks, instead of complaining about their condition.

In the closing weeks of the campaign, I will continue to visit every home I can and look forward to including the residents and taxpayers IN this Town in the future goals and ideas FOR this Town. There isn’t a one party solution to a community, only a community solution. We need to return to old fashioned home town values and a government that serves with honesty and integrity. I look forward to that opportunity.

CANDIDATE STEVE ROBELOTTO RESPONDS TO “VOTE THEM OUT” Letter to the Editor: I have read Ms. Gersten’s article and it is full of misrepresentations in regard to the Van Issue.

• First: She states that because of Councilman Glasser, Councilman Turner and my “ineptitude and arrogance” taxpayers have an expensive federal lawsuit. This is completely false. The cause of the lawsuit is not due to our arrogance, but that of Justin Schultz (town employee and planning board chairman), Janet Oliver and Jennifer Schroeder who were led by Barbara Martinage and her attorney Sim Goldman, who wanted things their way or no way.

• Second: The town must defend this lawsuit because otherwise it would cost the taxpayers another $81,000 to get rid of the former “Community Van” and purchase a “Wheelchair Accessible Van” if not defended.

• Third: The Town was GIVEN $31,000 at no cost to the taxpayers and we made the best decision for all residents, not just one.

• Fourth: Supervisor Rounds and Councilwoman Kronau also voted to defend the lawsuit. I did not have a vote or was able to be involved because I am not currently in office.

• FACT: Ownership of a wheelchair accessible van would also cost the town more money to hire and train NYS Department of Transportation certified drivers who have medical training. Where would this money come from?

• FACT: Volunteers would not be allowed to drive.

• FACT: The wheelchair accessible van would be a duplication of services with not only the county, but also the CDTA Star program and the Capital District Center for Disability Services.

• FACT: Ms. Gersten is an artist, with the Sand Lake Center for the Arts and not a taxpayer for the town of Sand Lake. She lives with another individual who has property located next to Justin Schultz and Supervisor Rounds’ “Confidential Secretary”. So you tell me WHO wrote the article.

• FACT: This is just dirty politics as usual from my opponent and her circle of friends.

BRUNSWICK HOG CHAPTER TOY FOR TOTS RUN On Sunday, November 6th, the Brunswick Harley Owners Group (HOG) will hold its annual Toys for Tots Benefit Ride to raise funds and gather toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program.

Registration begins at 11 AM at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Rd., Troy, NY. A guided parade of bikes, with police escort will take place at Noon. The parade will travel down routes 7 and 142, through Lansingburgh, Waterford, Crescent, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and end up at the Marine Recruiting Station at the Schenectady County Airport. THANK YOU FOR HELPING On August 28, 2011, when the hurricane/tropical storm hit all of us, there were some hit harder than others. When the wall of water came down the Poestenkill Creek that day, people had literally minutes to get out of their houses.

One of those families, now live in a camper. Their house is destroyed but not their strength.

We don’t know what it is like to be forced to reside in a camper.

A summer vacation is one thing: to have a nice wooded campsite with electric hook-up, septic hook-up, garbage pick-up. That’s normal. This family is not residing at a nice campsite.

One of the difficulties this family was experiencing was septic removal. On Labor Day, a telephone call was placed to Sand Lake Septic and was answered by Scott Blair. He is the owner of Sand Lake Septic. This is a small company, and in these difficult economic times, may be having his own problems. She does this because she is insecure. She is looking for a home without cats because she will chase them. Her new home should include another dog to play with her and to show & give her the confidence she needs when new people come to the home.

CLINTON HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFERING 100 FREE SMOKE ALARMS The Clinton Heights Fire Department (CHFD) in East Greenbush is celebrating Fire Prevention Month by distributing 100 smoke alarms free of charge to local families. The smoke alarms were donated by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., whose Industrial Operations and Product Supply facilities are in the fire department’s first-response area.

“We know from experience that having working smoke alarms is essential to minimizing the risk of serious injury or death when a fire breaks out,” said Seth Tracy, First Assistant Chief of the Department. “We appreciate Regeneron’s willingness to be an active participant in efforts to improve the safety of our community. Gifts like this save lives.”

The smoke alarms will be distributed by volunteer fire fighters going door-to-door in the Hampton Manor neighborhood, where many of the homes pre-date modern fire safety codes.

The comfort of a Mother’s hand offers strength to battle sickness and great sadness. It sees us through and keeps us hopeful. We hang on tight to endure life’s ups and downs. Her hand is always there, unconditional, inspirational. Reaching out in the night, a Mother’s hand brings peace and light. Our hands embrace in dreams and memories, spirits lifted with joy and grace.

The love of a Mother’s hand always speaks to our mind, heart and soul; it cannot ever be compromised.

My hand now holds my Mother’s hand; healing fear and unforgiving disease. The touch is strong and powerful. Love’s energy is within; we squeeze tight until no more, our hands are separated. Her strength is now my strength and passed on forever more.
