I was an organizer of the group that opposed mining on Snake Mountain and participated in the DEC hearings which resulted in denial of the mining permit.

I have advocated for environ-mental controls on pesticides in order to prevent breast cancer, and have been involved in other health issues for women, children, and men. I have experience in how government operates and how it should operate.

Our 99% I would like to express my thanks to “the 99%”. I have been involved in East Greenbush politics for a long time. I was a committee person in the 1970s to the mid-1980s.

I have been a council-person, deputy supervisor, and Supervisor for 14 years. I have attended hundreds of Town Board meetings, missing only 3 during those years.

At these meetings there have been numerous differences of opinions, problems to be solved, and questions to be asked and answered. These have been expressed by Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Independent, Working Family, Liberal, and probably the “Rent is too damn high” party members. In all that time, and through all those questions, 99% of the people who have addressed the Town Board have been civil, polite and concerned. As a Board, we have listened and have taken action to help whenever we could. If unable to act exactly as the resident asked, we have engaged in one-on-one discourse and have attempted to reach a compromise position. We have not made decisions on personality. As one movie said, “It’s business”.

Unfortunately, it seems that this has changed, at least for a small handful of residents, who feel justified in publicly libeling, slandering, and defaming anyone who disagrees with them.

I would like go on the record about this despicable trend.

This administration and the good people who work in town do not deserve this treatment and I will not have them be publicly insulted. This small group has made countless charges, all without validation, against this administration, saying whatever hateful thing they can think of without offering any proof of wrongdoing. As Supervisor, I can accept criticism and reasonable disagreements that are expressed in a civil manner. I believe that those residents of East Greenbush who have continuously acted in a responsible manner expect and deserve no less. The same is true for the Town Board and the good people who work for the residents of East Greenbush.

To the 99%— I want you to know how proud I am to serve as your Supervisor. Over the years, I have come to know many of you and to call you friends. I ask you to go out and vote on November 8. I am asking for your continued support for our team, Toni Murphy, Sue Mangold, Phil Malone, and of course, for me, Rick McCabe. PREMO SUPPORTS PROGRESS FOR NORTH GREENBUSH Mark Premo is seeking re-election as Highway Superintendent. He has served in this position for the past eight years managing a 1.4 million dollar budget and 14 dedicated employees.

Premo expressed concern that as the town grows adding new developments and roads, monies set aside in PILOT funds to maintain these roads have been taken by the town board for other town expenses.

It’s my hope that residents will stand with me opposing this practice and restore these funds to the Highway Department so we can put an addition on the garage to house new trucks purchased to handle the growth without costly borrowing. Premo noted that more than $370,000 in set aside highway funds were in his budget at the beginning of last year and in the last few months, I have been informed the balance sheet was as low as minus $90,000 one week and plus $50,000 the next. None of this money was used by the town board majority with my authorization and at no time was there a public budget transfer as required by law. “I believe the Town Board is using Highway Funds to make themselves look good now, but later the Highway Department will pay the price”, stated Premo.

I am hopeful a new Town Board will be more responsible stewards of Highway Funds and feel fortunate to be on the ballot with candidates that understand this. Premo has been informed he would be the choice of Supervisor candidate Charles Smith as his Deputy Supervisor, an unpaid position, and that his expertise would be utilized to help run the town with the same efficiency as the Highway Department. “I will be honored to serve in this position and will work closely with the next Town Board for fiscal accountability”, stated Premo.

Mark is running on ROW “A” with candidates determined to bring real progress to the town. His running mates include Charles Smith for Supervisor, Ernest Kern and Andria Fisher for Council and Mike Derevlany, Receiver of Taxes. SAY NO TO THE ROBELOTTO TEAM Letter to the Editor: It is time for a change, time to say NO to the Robelotto team and their lawyer Donna Cole-Paul. Their mistakes have cost thousands of taxpayer dollars in unnecessary, unwarranted lawsuits. They have continually voted to represent the interests of their political cronies instead of Sand Lake Citizens. For example, did they represent your interest on mining, lake access, the community van and zoning?

Their “leadership” consists of steering Town business to their friends, while doing as little as possible on their assigned Town committees. Their lack of vision and moral near-sightedness demeans Town residents. Are their votes really putting you and Sand Lake First?

Flora Fasoldt, Mark Cioffi and John Snieszyk will restore integrity and competency to the work of the Town Board. These folks will honor and adhere to the Town’s fiscal and policy procedures and will treat residents with respect. It’s time for a change.

FRANK CURTIS SEEKS TO CONTINUE SERVICE TO SCHODACK With decades of community involvement, Frank Curtis is seeking to continue serving Schodack as a member of the Town Board.

Curtis has supported fiscally conservative policies as a member of the Town Board, helping control spending and stabilize property taxes. The town has also been able to maintain important services despite a difficult national recession, even while reducing spending in some areas of town government.

The town’s strong financial showing and work at controlling costs was recognized through an upgrade of the town’s credit rating in 2011. The respected financial analyst firm Moody’s raised the town’s bond rating from A1 to Aa3.

“Our priority has been to control spending and balance budgets.

By carefully watching our costs and ensuring budget stability, we have been able to protect needed services and weather a difficult recession,” said Curtis.

“Having those efforts recognized with an improved credit rating is important, because it shows to new businesses and investors that Schodack is on the right track. It helps build a foundation for the future,” added Curtis.

Curtis has called Schodack his home for his entire life, and has been active in the community for decades. Frank has been active with the East Schodack Fire Co. for 36 years, including past service as chief and assistant chief. A former Scoutmaster and 4-H leader, Frank is an Eagle Scout and served Schodack as town assessor.

As Councilman, Frank helped author a Right to Farm Law to protect farmland and open space, helped develop a Master Plan, and supported raising exemption levels for veterans, disabled and senior citizens. He recently helped establish an electronic collection site at the town transfer station, and supported efforts to keep Schodack Island State Park open recently after a shutdown due to state fiscal troubles.

“We have been proud to maintain needed services, and in some cases, expand the services offered to residents. The services provided by the town help protect quality of life and we want to keep Schodack strong,” said Curtis.

SPAIN RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS Letter to the Editor: I would like to respond to the letter from Patricia Noel in last week’s Advertiser. She questions my ability to serve as North Greenbush Supervisor next year if I am working full time elsewhere. The fact is that the question is completely irrelevant since I have made it abundantly clear since I first decided to pursue the office of Supervisor, that I would retire from my position with the City of Troy if I am fortunate enough to win this race. Moreover, my opponent has been well aware of my plans, and is manufacturing a nonexistent issue and purposely misleading the citizens of North Greenbush.

I wish my opponents would concentrate on the real issues in this important race rather than creating imaginary ones. WILL DESSO OPPOSE COUNTY TAX HIKE? North Greenbush Town Council candidate Ernest Kern is calling on County Legislator Lou Desso to oppose the tax hike proposed by the County Executive with the same logic he applied to the North Greenbush budget where he holds a conflicting elective office as a Town Councilman.

Before anything was proposed by the Town Supervisor, Desso declared he would not support a tax hike, stated Kern. How can he oppose a tax hike in North Greenbush while supporting one in Rensselaer County? Why did he not make the same no tax increase declaration as a County Legislator?

Kern also questioned how Mr. Desso might avoid a county tax hike. Perhaps he will take PILOT moneys from the County Highway Department to pay for General Fund expenses, as he did here in North Greenbush. He might also simply allow the county budget to carry a deficit rather than increasing taxes, just as he did in North Greenbush for the past 3 years.

Last but not least, Mr. Desso might refuse to purchase any new patrol cars for the Sheriff Department’s Road Patrol fleet which the county is currently soliciting bids for. Until embarrassed into purchasing two police cars in North Greenbush this year, Mr. Desso had refused to allow the Town Police to replace a single car over the past three budgets, forcing them to use cars that were less safe and more costly to maintain.

I call upon Mr. Desso to publicly oppose the county tax hike proposal.

I directed the investigation that eventually convicted Michael Mosley of the killings that had haunted the parents of two murdered children and this community for nearly a decade. Mosley is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the meantime, I’ve led a team of dedicated attorneys and investigators that have made the criminal justice system in this county work the way it is supposed to. I take pride in our work and our record is proof of our professionalism and effectiveness. I ask for your support and look forward to serving as your District Attorney for the next four years.

IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE SERVING SAND LAKE It has been my honor to serve as Sand Lake’s Supervisor these past two years. My greatest delight has been meeting the good people who make Sand Lake special! As my term ends, I thank friends, supporters and employees who have made public service genuinely pleasurable.

Now is a good time to reflect on what worked and what needs improvement. Notable accomplishments include: solar panels and lighting at town facilities, our role in the Veterans Memorial Park, spurring town water improvements, protecting our lakes through sewer expansion, the challenges of the flood and hurricane and maintenance and improvement of our roads and bridges.

Our “Burt’s Round Table” discussions bring people closer to government and encourage public participation. I hope similar gatherings continue in the next administration.

My special thanks to our hard-working Bicentennial Committee.

These volunteers bring town history to life for future generations. We’ll be celebrating in 2012!

There have been disappointments and frustrations. The largest is that the current majority, Splain, Glasser and Turner, allow the Town Attorney – a political appointee – to overstep the bounds of her authority and essentially run town government.

The town attorney should give legal advice only when necessary and requested. Instead, the town attorney directs the Republican Majority. They are a rubber stamp, lacking accountability and work ethic. One board member has withdrawn from work on any town committees. The town now faces multiple lawsuits, some of which were avoidable. They waste precious tax dollars.

Our town’s website must be upgraded and enhanced. The board has dragged its feet. The Town Board Majority missed a chance to put the old highway garage on the tax rolls. Indecision and waffling are causing this town asset to decay. The budget practices of this and past Republican majorities are unsustainable, repeatedly increasing spending and draining our savings. Our diminished accounts will challenge any new administration. As my term ends, I ask you to stay informed and be active in local government. Letter to the Editor: I am writing to set the record straight regarding misinformation being written about Councilman Lou Desso by CB Smith allies Hebert & Price.

After winning a seat on the North Greenbush Town Board in 2007, Democrat leaders decided to deny voters their choice and found a technicality in a 40 yr. old law causing him to vacate his seat. Shortly thereafter, county legislative action corrected the technicality and Lou was reappointed to the seat he had already won.

State law required a special election to fill the remainder of his term. Councilman Desso was happy to run with his party endorsement and began to campaign as such. Eight days prior to the caucus I received a phone call from Democrat committeeman Ed Casino asking me to see if Lou would run in the caucus against Smith’s candidate. After prodding from several committee people, he agreed and won the caucus by a two to one margin. He didn’t INVADE the caucus as Mr. Price writes, he was INVITED to be there.

Price makes a point to say Lou missed a Board meeting that night. It is the only meeting he had missed in four years.

Recently, while battling a life threatening illness, unable to sit, he stood at meetings to perform the duties of his office.

Both Price and Hebert write about voter choice but only when it serves them. In this case, the Democrats refused to give Lou the line he won in a legally held election, thus denying the will of the people. Supreme Court Justice Roger McDonough then ordered his name be put on the ballot line.

Hebert wants progress brought to the Town and Price says you can’t serve two masters. Councilman Desso has demonstrated clearly that he can hold both of his seats without conflict as did Democrats Ginny O’Brien and Keith Hammond before him. He is a hard working public servant and his dual office role certainly helped him to renegotiate the Town’s sales tax formula with the County that has great financial benefits for our Town and helped him get our Library funding restored. ~Kate Connolly, NG Town Clerk

2012 BUDGET MAINTAINS HIGHWAY SERVICES IN NORTH GREENBUSH North Greenbush Town Board members Joe Bott and Kelly Hoffman have taken issue with comments made regarding the 2011 Town Highway Budget, saying the department will receive adequate funding and staffing, and that services will be maintained at the current level.The highway budget is part of a fiscal package for 2012 that includes a general fund budget that does not raise property or highway taxes for a fourth consecutive year. In addition, town services are maintained, a $429,000 debt inherited from previous administrations has been erased, and a substantial surplus established.

Bott, who serves as chair of the Town Highway Committee, said the Town Board will continue to work with the highway superintendent to ensure highway services are maintained.

“We know how important road repair and snow-plowing are to residents, along with the other services and functions performed by the department. We look forward to 2012 being another strong year for highway services in the town,” said Bott. “There have been some misstatements about the department’s budget for 2012. The department is adequately funded, and the department will receive the support it needs during the coming year,” added Bott. The department has been funded adequately enough that the department was able to compile a surplus. That surplus will be used to help fund the 2012 highway budget and also help the town avoid a highway tax increase for the fourth consecutive year.

The 2012 budget also corrects some mistakes in past budgets. Three workman’s compensation payments in 2009 and 2010 were not paid and expenditures for retirement costs were paid from an incorrect fund. The mistakes were found by the new town comptroller, and when rectified, reduced the amount of the department’s surplus.

“We have taken great care to balance budgets and accurately track town finances. A failure to do that by a previous administration caused a deficit to grow. We have been able to erase the deficit, and in doing so, protect needed services like highway and public safety,” said Hoffman.

“The town will continue to provide needed support for town services like the Highway Department while protecting taxpayers,” added Hoffman.

Gary Gordon was born and raised in the North Central Neighborhood of Troy, New York. Gordon spent a great deal of his childhood at the Troy Boy’s and Girl’s Club and was elected into their Hall of Fame in 2003. After attending St. Patrick’s School, Gordon transferred to the Troy Public School System where he graduated in 1977 from Troy High School. Following graduation, Gordon attended Hudson Valley Community College until 1979 and, during this time, worked in the Public Safety Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he trained and became certified as an emergency medical technician. Gordon began his career with the Troy Police Department and graduated from the Municipal Police Training Council (Police Academy) in 1985. He began his career as an evidence technician in the patrol division.

Throughout his career, Gordon worked in various divisions in the police department including traffic safety, street crimes unit (narcotics); he also was the first Troy Police Officer assigned to the Community Police Unit. Notably, in 1998, Gordon was promoted to Sergeant and received the Silver Shield Award for bravery. Upon being assigned to the Detective Bureau in 2001, Gordon investigated crimes as a Detective Sergeant and was assigned to the Major Crimes Unit shortly thereafter. Gordon remained in that unit until his retirement in 2006.

During his tenure in the Troy Police Department, Gordon received 31 prestigious commendations, but also trained in numerous areas of law enforcement. Gordon is a certified Police Instructor and has, among other places taught at the Zone 5 Police Academy. In 2003, Gordon was an associate of the New York State Police Colonel Williams Homicide Seminar A very prestigious seminar attended by Investigators throughout the world and presented by the top forensics personnel in the Country.

In 2006, Gordon was appointed as a Confidential Investigator for the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office where he continues to conduct high profile criminal investigations and assures that each individual case is trial ready.

South Colonie also had a school bus vote. This was approved.

GOOD GOVERNMENT IS OPEN, HONEST AND ACCOUNTABLE Letter to the Editor: I saw the ad in last week’s Advertiser where the Schodack Republican candidates claimed to be a “Good Government Town Board Team”.

They claim to be fiscal conservatives, yet they allowed a police officer to make $140,000 in his final year, so he could increase the pension Schodack taxpayers will be paying for many years.

They also settled a lawsuit for $120,000 with this same officer for EVEN MORE OVERTIME. They claim to be fiscal conservatives, yet town taxes have almost doubled in the past decade under their one-party rule.

They claim to be “Working for the Future”, yet the town does not have an updated master plan with related zoning changes.

They just muddle through, letting connected developers do whatever they want.

They claim to represent “good government”, yet they decide all town business in secret in advance of Town Board meetings, where there is no debate or discussion.

They claim to represent “good government”, yet they refused to attend a candidates forum at Maple Hill High School to defend their record.

Schodack voters should be aware that these claims are just political spin, with little connection to the facts. ~Lillian DeMattia, Castleton

A MORE COMPLETE VIEW OF DESSO’S & SPAIN’S RECORD Letter to the Editor: A letter by Republican Committee member John Wood criticized me while omitting the facts about County Legislator/Town Councilman Lou Desso’s record. Mr. Wood never mentioned Desso’s holding of a conflicting elective office on our town board made possible because his party in the legislature changed the laws enforced by a State Judge which removed him.

This allowed Desso to be reappointed to the seat the judge removed him from. Also not mentioned is the fact that Mr. Desso and his ally Mr. Spain turned off the cameras at town board meeting s so they would no longer be viewable on Public Access television. As for fiscal responsibility, there was no mention of a needless $30,000 NO BID contract to redo the completed Comprehensive Plan which was presented to the town in 2007, paid for entirely with grant money. Nor was there any mention of their refusal to accept a $35,000 State Brownstone Grant awarded to revitalize Main Avenue.

Nowhere did the letter note Mr. Desso’s redo of the 2011 town budget with Mr. Spain’s approval, taking $71,000 in Highway Funds to restore the Supervisor’s cuts in the General Fund. The Highway Superintendent now has no money to build a planned addition to the garage or funds to handle increased pension and health costs.

Finally, I must mention the more embarrassing episodes of this administration, the reckless firings of the Town Comptroller and Youth Director at Mr. Desso’s direction. The Comptroller’s reputation was dragged through the mud with untrue accusations of an “unauthorized bank account” while the Youth Director was terminated on grounds his job was not needed. That came after they first tried to fire him on trumped up allegations they were forced to back away from. Shortly afterwards, the majority approved $10,000 in overtime to the highest salaried town hall employee, a politically wired Building Inspector, to do some of the Youth Director’s duties claimed as “unnecessary”.

PAINT THE SCHOOL PINK On Wednesday, October 12th, the East Greenbush Central School District’s Columbia High School held its annual ‘Paint the School Pink’ day in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The school’s student council decorated the entire school in pink balloons, streamers, and signs. The students and staff also wore pink. In addition, the student council sold pink hair extensions and had a bake sale. The money the students earned will be donated to Breast Cancer Research.

Dear Editor, After reading in the Advertiser (10/20/11) the charge that the Nassau Republican Committee were seeking to take over the entire town government, I decided to research the charge.

Mr. Fleming, Town Supervisor, Mr. McCagg, Highway Supervisor are running for re-election. Mr. Carpenter is already a Town Councilman. All are members of the Committee as is Mr. Sears who is employed as Deputy Supervisor and is now running for Town Council. Further, the Republican Town Clerk candidate is married to a committee member.

When these elected officials meet, are they acting as members of the Committee or as elected officials of ALL the people? Do personal , professional and civic interests conflict with the real needs of the citizens of the town?

These overlapping interests and loyalties can present real conflicts of interest in a time when voters everywhere have so little faith in any parts of our government.

I am a registered Republican although I have never followed party lines in my voting. I believe in checks and balances in all levels of government, even in Nassau.

Because of this I will not vote for the Republican candidates.

TOWN SUFFERED WITH ROBELOTTO’S FULL-TIME LEADERSHIP Letter to the Editor: Former Supervisor Robelotto wants you to think it was good that his job was supposedly “full time”. Does he really believe that doing crossword puzzles, buying car parts and going to Lebanon Valley are a full-time Supervisor’s work?

In case anyone needs reminders, here are things our “full time” Supervisor (who, by the way, was one of the highest paid in the County per capita) should have been handling better: 1. Before Robelotto, Sand Lake had a huge fund balance that should have kept our Town financially secure well into the future.

With his budget mismanagement, spending on pet projects skyrocketed. He played the hero by not raising taxes, but didn’t tell you where the money was coming from. The result? Goodbye fund balance.

2. Robelotto mismanaged the Town’s grant for a community van by illegally buying a vehicle that didn’t meet federal standards, acting without prior Board approval. The town is now defending a federal lawsuit because the van can’t be used by people in wheelchairs. It’s off the road, your money is gone and the disabled have no medical transportation.

3. Robelotto failed to protect Town property, refusing to spend even a small sum to repair the roof over part of the old Town Garage. That part of the building rotted, costing the Town more to demolish it than a roof repair would have cost.

4. Robelotto failed to properly oversee adoption of the new zoning. Now a court has said it was not properly adopted. He blames the Clerk for not filing a document she was never asked to file!

5. Robelotto’s majority on the board repeatedly blocked forward movement on a water system, leaving people unable to sell their home or get mortgages.

6. In Robelotto’s do-nothing Board majority, Mr. Splain refuses to work on committees and Turner and Glasser say nothing.

7. When residents ask questions and make statements, the majority are caught arrogantly calling names like “vultures” and “crazy old lady...”

GUY FORTE FOR NASSAU TOWN COUNCIL Hi, my name is Guy Forte. I am excited and honored to announce my candidacy for Nassau Town Council. By way of introduction, my wife, Sue, and I have been residents of Nassau for more than 10 years. While we didn’t know much about Nassau when we first moved here, we quickly discovered what a truly wonderful place it is to live and have developed a deep commitment to the town and the people who live here.

One thing that is very important to me is serving the community.

Over the years, I have been active as a member of the Village of Nassau Beautification Committee, helping to plan and put on annual summer events enjoyed by the community. I currently serve on the Village of Nassau Planning Board as well. Most recently, I helped to re-establish the Nassau Sunshine Fund. The Fund is a charitable organization that provides no-interest loans to Nassau residents who are dealing with financial emergencies, which are, unfortunately, all too common. Loans are funded through donations from members of the community, so it’s really the community taking care of its own.

Among my core values are a commitment to open and transparent government and the idea that a community can only work when all of its members have a voice in what goes on and how things get done. Regardless of who you are, where you live, or what your party affiliation is, if you’re a member of the community, if you have something to contribute or a concern to be raised, it should be heard and respected. Ultimately, what happens in the community should be a reflection of the values and desires of its members.

Because of these values, I believe I am the best candidate for the Nassau Town Council. I look forward to continuing my service to the community as a member of the Town Council. Vote for me on November 8th and I will work hard to represent the voices of all residents and to preserve the community character of our town.

I have been a member of the Town’s Youth Committee for 4 years. In these positions, I have worked with and served the people to the best of my ability.

I am not a political person, so I was surprised to find out that the way to get this job is to be hired by the people through an election. So for the first time in my life, I am going door to door campaigning. It was a little strange at first, but now I am enjoying meeting my neighbors.

With me, you will get someone who hopes to be Town Clerk for years and years. I will serve you with a smile on my face and run the office in a friendly and efficient manner. I will extend the hours to include Saturday and late afternoons, and will continue to work to modernize operations at Town Hall.

SAND LAKE DESERVED A CHANGE Letter to the Editor: After reading Joe Johnson’s letter in the Advertiser, I feel a need to respond and inform the residents of Sand Lake of the real facts of why the Democrats did not endorse Steve Robelotto for Supervisor in the last three elections. The Democratic Committee’s decision was based on his performance during his term as Supervisor. We felt that the residents of Sand Lake deserved better. We strongly believed that we needed a candidate who possessed exceptional work ethic, researched grants available, and worked in the best interest of the residents of Sand Lake. Of utmost importance, we believed that all residents needed to be treated with respect and concern for their needs at all times. We needed a candidate that fit all these qualifications and certainly Mr. Robelotto, as demonstrated through his tenure in office, did not fulfill our expectations.

As chairman, I never spoke to Mr. Robelotto about town business and I take great offense at being wrongly accused of doing so. I truly believe that once the residents of the town decide who they want to represent them in town government, politics is over and the residents of Sand Lake are first.

A MESSAGE FROM COUNCILWOMAN MANGOLD Government has changed in East Greenbush over the last year. In November 2010 I was elected to the Town Board along with Phil Malone. In that short time I have learned much, and I’ve come to appreciate all the hard work that goes into running Town Government. Working with the Citizens Fiscal Advisory Committee, our Comptroller, and Department Heads, we have kept operations well within the budget, with a forecast for a $240,000 surplus this year. The upcoming budget calls for further reduction of our debt and a continued conservative approach to managing our revenues.

Please recognize that this Town budget under our control represents only about 20% of your total tax bill. Your school, library, and Fire Departments each develop their own budgets, which you have the right to vote on every year.

Since I joined the Town Board, we have initiated contracts for annual independent audits over the next three years. I am a firm believer in audits which provide an opportunity to identify and refine areas that need improvement. We have secured significant revenues, by forging a payment plan from the City of Rensselaer for outstanding water use fees, and collecting mitigation fees from developers for commercial expansion projects that we have approved. It is good to see this positive economic development revitalized as major projects at Fed Ex, Regeneron, and NYISO are now moving along. In addition I have attended numerous ribbon cuttings for new small businesses and retail outlets throughout the past year.

This energy is set to continue as many more proposals are in the planning stages, and I voted to approve development of additional retail units on the Route 4 corridor at the October Board meeting. It is through growth like this that we can expand our base and start seeing some relief in our taxes.

WHERE ARE THE EAST GREENBUSH FINANCIALS???

Letter to the Editor: It should be perfectly clear that the question about the status of the East Greenbush Financials is rhetorical. Given the previously documented financial condition of the Town and the findings and recommendations contained in the reports from OSC, Moodys, Financial Advisors and UHY, there is just no excuse for not having financial information in a timely manner. Financial condition and financial management are where the problems are in this Town. If the Board actually wanted to be on top of things, it could have simply required of staff to have the Annual Update Document (AUD) for 2010 done and to the State Comptroller when it was due on April 1st of this year. And it would have required that a certified audit be done by June or July, or maybe even August or September.

It didn’t.

The Management of this Corporation (East Greenbush) is asking to be retained in the coming election. The Stockholders of this Corporation we, the taxpayers have a right to information related to the performance of Management. We are not getting it.

Given what happened last year, where the Stockholders were fed spun and misleading information about a yet to be released audit report before the election, only to discover later that the Administrations statements were profoundly misleading, it’s not a stretch at all to perceive much the same game-plan going on. The McCabe administration is sitting on the 2010 audit so stockholders/taxpayers won’t have independent information on which to judge its performance before the election. Just doesn’t pass the smell test for transparency and accountability.

It was asserted last year that the UHY audit report contained an “unqualified opinion.” That was a lie. And now we have no idea whether Town management has addressed the matters cited last year in a very critical report. I urge readers to read the commentary titled The downward slide of East Greenbush, NY at the following website. I am pleased to announce my candidacy for North Greenbush Town Council. For the last two years, I have served as attorney for the Zoning Board of Appeals, and as a member of the Public Safety Committee. In 2010, I served on the Comprehensive Plan Implementation/Codes Revision Committee. In these roles, I have demonstrated my ability to work with residents with differing political views, because ultimately, the work that we have done isn’t about me or them, it is about serving you, the residents of the Town.

I feel my life experiences have provided invaluable lessons that I intend to apply as a Councilwoman. While I attended Albany Law School, I had to figure out how to balance my responsibilities as a law student, a mom, and an employee.

This was by no means easy, but I learned the importance of hard work, and that short-term sacrifices can provide long term rewards.

I live on Winter Street with my husband, Jerry, and children, Pam and Danny. I am a principal at the Albany law firm Hinman Straub, PC. I am President of the Board for St. Catherine’s Center for Children and serve on the Board’s Strategic Planning, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Finance Committees.

RESPONSE TO PAT HARRINGTON’S “FACTS” IN NORTH GREENBUSH Letter to the Editor: I’ve officially grown tired of the lies and accusations being spewed by C.B. Smith and his “Progress” team in North Greenbush. While C.B. and his associates are entitled to their own opinion, they are certainly not entitled to their own facts: He claims that the Town Board has allowed 4&43 to become a vacant lot, although wasn’t it C.B. and friends that filed frivolous lawsuits to deter the construction? If the lawsuits had not been filed, the construction would have taken place in a much more favorable economy and we would be reaping sales tax benefits now—just a FACT. He claims that Councilman Lou Desso was elected last year with no opponent, when in fact a Democratic caucus was held that Mr. Desso was invited to by the Democrat committee and prevailed against C.B.’s handpicked candidate by a two to one margin. Then C.B. refused to endorse the democratically chosen candidate of their party, and Councilman Desso had to file a lawsuit to be put on the line he won—just a FACT. He and Highway Supervisor Mark Premo claim that the Town Board took PILOT money from the Highway Department in last year’s budget to pay for a spending spree. The fact is payments in lieu of taxes are not statutorily required to be directed to the Highway Department.

The Town Board balanced a budget based on the total revenue allotted to the Town, just like how any hard working family would balance their household budget. Furthermore, Mr. Premo claims that his budget is currently under funded? Why then did he propose a 2012 budget that shows no deficit? The fact is that this is a concocted issue that C.B. and company have created to smear a fiscally prudent Town Board—just a FACT. I urge the voters in North Greenbush to not read too deeply into the spin-machine that C.B. is dishing out. Remember, Al Spain and Lou Desso are part of a Town Board that have ERASED a $429,000 deficit, inherited from a previous Board, without raising our taxes. NO CORRECTION NEEDED Dear Mr. Fleming, Regarding the letter I had in the Advertiser last week, you emailed me stating, “You may want to note for a correction that I am not the Republican Town Chairman and have not been for quite some time.” I disagree with you. There is no need for me to make such a correction since the document I relied on is the current, official Board of Elections 2010 -2012 Town/City Republican Chairmen list. It names you as the Nassau Republican Chairman.

I did call the Board of Elections to further clarify and a clerk named Kari said that Ron Sears was now the chair, but, she was unable to verify if this was correct. She could not provide nor offered any official documentation to support that statement despite two phone calls and a direct request for her to do so.

Whether it is you, or Ron Sears, the point I am making is still valid: a small group of individuals, calling themselves the Nassau Republican Committee, are running for elected office themselves or choosing family members or other close relations to do the same. Substituting Mr. Sears’ name for yours only reinforces my point, because he is your Deputy Supervisor and he is running for a seat on the Town Council. It is just musical chairs.

I still believe having a small group control Nassau is not good government for the citizens of the town; no matter what the party. Checks and balances work best for all in a democracy.

I am responding to your email in public, because this is an issue the public needs to know about.

Averill Park High School is putting on a Powder-puff Flag-football game as a fundraiser for our Student Government. It isn’t just for the Student Government though, we are also collecting can donations for the local CoNSERNS-U Foundation. Admission into this game will be both $1.00 and a can of non-perishable food (one can minimum) or $2.00. This game will take place under the lights on Thursday, November 3rd, at 6:30 at Averill Park High School. Come out and watch our senior girls take on our junior girls in the fashion of an American pasttime that we all love. Please help us collect more cans of food than we have ever collected before in our annual November food drive. Have a night of family fun for a great local cause and a great price…Be there!

ATTENTION ALL AVERILL PARK 1st – 8th GRADERS! Averill Park Youth Basketball Hoop Camp starts Saturday, November 5th. There is still time to register. This is a fun and educational 13 week non-competitive basketball program that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of basketball. The program runs every Saturday for 90 minutes per session in one of the Algonquin Middle School gyms. The cost of the program is still just $60 per child with a max of $90 per family. Every participant gets an APYB T-shirt and free pizza party at the end of the season. 1st and 2nd grade boys and girls get a bonus free basketball to keep and use!

“Make way for the President, ladies and gentlemen,” Student Government President Sivan Saati has a great back handed shot on the tennis courts. Sivan is a hard working and dedicated senior at Averill Park High School. She started playing in 10th grade and has been on the Varsity team for two years now. “I always wanted to play tennis because I loved the beauty of the game,” says Saati when asked about why she started playing. Her favorite part of tennis is feeling the power of the serves, hits, and returns. Sivan and her best friend Jen Blessing are the number 1 doubles team for Averill Park; playing sideby-side with her best friend is also one of her favorite parts of the game. Sivan is a college bound kid who is looking to study International Relations and Cultural Anthropology. Saati hopes to attend Northeastern University, University of New Hampshire, Tufts University or University of Massachusetts Amherst. With a GPA of 92, Sivan doesn’t take easy courses; she is taking Advanced Placement Government and Politics, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Senior Portfolio, and Advanced Placement English. Her favorite subjects in school are Advanced Placement Government and Politics and Senior Portfolio. Sivan is a great artist and feels that she can express herself without words but with images. Art is something she enjoys doing in her spare time along with spending time with her friends and family, and volunteering in the community.

When asked about being a scholar athlete Saati replied, “It means that I have responsibly balanced my schoolwork with athletics and have dedicated my efforts to both equally.” An art award from Sage College, an attendee of Girls State, National Honor Society nominee, a four year scholar athlete, and a High School Regional Arts nominee, are just some of the awards that Sivan has earned in her High School career. She says she has her parents to thank for it all, “My mom and Aba always support me and provide me with their loving guidance.”

She would also like to thank her tennis coaches, Coach Minkler and Coach Abbatiello, for all of their patience, compassion, and wisdom. Best of luck to Sivan and her partner and best friend Jen with the rest of their season.

TOYS FOR TOTS RUN On Sunday, November 6th, the Brunswick Harley Owners Group (HOG) will hold its annual Toys for Tots Benefit Ride to raise funds and gather toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program. Registration begins at 11 AM at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Rd., Troy, NY. A guided parade of bikes, with police escort will take place at Noon. The parade will travel down routes 7 and 142, through Lansingburgh, Waterford, Crescent, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and end up at the Marine Recruiting Station at the Schenectady County Airport. Last year, excellent weather and an overwhelming biker response, resulted in over 400 bikes participating in the event.

Last year’s parade was over 3 miles long. In addition to donating a bundle of toys, the event raised over $4,500 for this program.

RENSSELAER ELK’S HOOP SHOOT TOURNAMENT On Saturday, November 5th, Rensselaer Elk’s Lodge 2073 will be holding their local hoop shoot tournament. The tournament will be held at Genet Elementary School at 9:30AM. This tournament is for boys and girls ages 813 years old, using April 1, 2012 for the age cut off. For example, if you are 7 years old and will be 8 years old by March 31, 2012 you will be able to shoot in the tournament. If you are 13 years old and will be 14 years old

by March 31, 2012, then you cannot shoot in the tournament.

The age groups are 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13, in both the boys and girls group. You do not have to be related to an Elk to shoot in this tournament. It is open to all boys and girls who are in the age groups shown above.

For those who have never shot in the tournament, I would like to let you know, that this is not a basketball game, it is shooting from the foul line. The 8-9 year olds shoot from 4 feet in front of the foul line. All the others shoot from the foul line. First you take 10 shots, and then 15 shots, for a total of 25 shots. The winners in each age group will go on to represent Rensselaer Elks in the district tournament, which will be held at a later date, competing against the winners of the other lodge in our district. There are 4 other tournaments after the district tournament that you have a chance to advance to. They are, the east regional, the state, the tri-state, and finally, the National Hoop Shoot Tournament, where you will compete against the winners from all over the country. The winners of the National Tournament will get their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

You can see what you have a chance of doing. But first, you have to participate in our local tournament and win. You do not have to be a basketball player to participate in the hoop shoot tournament. You just have to be the right age and want to have fun.

Sacred Heart School held its third Father Vaughan Annual Sacred Heart Golf Scramble at Frear Park on October 1st. Sixty-one golfers from the Capital District and beyond (Herkimer, Utica, Saratoga and Coxsackie) started with lunch, then after playing a round of golf everyone enjoyed a delicious chicken and rib dinner. The lunch and dinner was prepared by the Park Pub Restaurant. The event had over 40 sponsors that purchased flags or signs with over 20 prizes valued at approximately $30,000. Next year’s event is already scheduled for September 29th at Frear Park. NORTHEAST SPARTANS PLAYER DEVELOP. PROGRAM COACHING CLINIC The Northeast Spartans Player Development Program will host a coaching clinic with professional coach Brian McCormick. Coach McCormick has authored thirteen books, is the founder of the Youth Basketball Coaching Association and the creator of the Playmakers Basketball Development League. In addition, Coach McCormick has coached and trained players at all levels and holds numerous speed, strength and conditioning certificates.

EGCSD STUDENTS SUPPORT THE NDSS BUDDY WALK The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. Today, the Buddy Walk program is supported nationally by NDSS and organized at the local level by parent support groups, schools and other organizations and individuals. When the East Greenbush Central School District’s Howard L. Goff Middle School Student Council heard about the Buddy Walk, they decided to form “Kathleen’s Krew” in honor of their classmate Kathleen. The Student Council held a two-day Bake Sale during the school’s lunch periods.

They must have had some delicious baked goods, because when the sale was over, they had raised $700.

On Sunday, October 2nd, Kathleen’s Krew—Goff Middle School students, staff, Kathleen, and her family—went to Schenectady to participate in the 2011 Capital District Buddy Walk and proudly donate their entire Bake Sale proceeds.

SENIORS’ MINISTRY TO OFFER EXERCISE PROGRAM Beginning on Oct. 31, the Seniors’ Ministry of Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph Parish, New Lebanon, will offer indoor exercise classes for seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Participants meet in the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall on Mondays and Thursdays from 9-10 am. The hall is located at 732 U.S. Route 20, New Lebanon. A professional trainer directs exercise activities which emphasize stretching, flexibility, balance, and light muscle toning. Individual needs and limitations will be taken into consideration. For those who join the program, incentive prizes are awarded based on time spent walking and exercising. Although a fee of $25.00 is requested for the first 10 weeks (Oct. 31 thru Jan. 13, 2012), no one will be excluded for lack of funds. Letter to the Editor: The problem of transportation in the Town of Sand Lake has been a concern of mine since I moved here in 1968.

As time went on and I became more involved with the Sand Lake Seniors where I was President for many years, I realized the problem was not merely getting to work, groceries, prescriptions, doctor appointments etc. I was elated to learn that another woman (Barbara Martinage) was also concerned. She had applied for a State Grant (2 in fact) to obtain a van to be used in the Town, but they were denied. Then we started going to various venues to draw attention to this need. What we were promoting was a van to be used to provide our residents with much needed transportation for our residents, mostly seniors. We then approached then-Supervisor Robelotto who contacted Senator Joe Bruno’s office, and in time, they awarded the Town with a Member Item in the amount of $31,000 to purchase a “Community Van”. A meeting was set up to discuss the details of what would be needed to carry out this project.

The type and size of the van was a major part of the discussion. It was decided that a wheelchair van was not necessary to provide the urgent needs of the community since the County had made it clear that wheelchair vans were available to wheelchair bound residents at no cost to the Town. NOTE: Mrs. Martinage was part of this meeting.

The Community Van operated for months with non-medical trained drivers and not once was a request received from a wheelchair bound resident. I have yet to understand why Mrs. Martinage decided to sue the Town over the purchase of a non wheelchair equipped van. Her attitude was expressed at “If it can’t be my way, then it’s no way at all”. Is there no sensible solution to this injustice?

In any event, it is the residents, especially our seniors, who no longer have use of the “Community Van” and Steve Robelotto who took the time to acquire this “gift” hoping to improve services for the Town only to be subjected to unnecessary criticism. Letter to the Editor: As I lifelong registered Democrat, I wanted to express my sincere disgust at the conduct of Rick McCabe and the Democratic leadership in this Town at the most recent Town Board meeting. Rick McCabe was outright dismissive of residents comments and complaints to the point where he blew up at one resident in exasperation saying he had been “Putting up with this crap for a few years.” His words not mine.

Mr. McCabe has simply NOT done his job. He and Toni Murphy have TAKEN $22,000 without board approval to increase their pensions and it has been proven. He has led us to JUNK BOND STATUS and he continues to mis-manage this Town, spinning the facts to make it appear that we are in good shape. We are not!

Since Mr. McCabe has been Supervisor, our TAXES HAVE INCREASED JUST ABOUT 20% based on budgets that HE drafted. His dismissive attitude toward the public was noted by one senior resident at the board meeting, as being an attitude carried out by Town employees in the tax office as well. No resident of any Town should ever be dismissed in the way Rick McCabe did with his unwarranted tirade.

It was suggested that if he considers the public’s opinion “crap”, then he should step down. If he is not willing to, voters in this Town should see to it that he does and vote him out! Rick McCabe, Toni Murphy, Phil Malone and Sue Mangold have demonstrated a disregard for the public in their willingness to stick together, and as such if they are of one mind, they should all be removed from office by the people they take for granted. ~William Mahan, East Greenbush

Following the installation ceremony, these other awards of distinction were also presented. The prestigious Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Fellow was awarded to Joseph Behson and Margaret Weiss.

Ken James was awarded the Diamond Fellow for continuing service beyond his Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Fellow.

CAN WE HAVE JUST 1 IN SCHODACK TO ASK QUESTIONS? Letter to the Editor: In 2007, after assisting the independent voter effort that nearly elected Ray Lemka as Town Supervisor, I began attending Schodack Town Board Meetings. I can attest there is almost zero discussion, questioning, or dissent on legislation by the Board at any public Board meetings. 99.8% of the time, no Board member questions anything before the public. Long time, 1 party rule does that.

As a taxpayer, I think what they vote on (laws, spending, zoning, taxes, etc.) needs to be discussed by the Board before the public.

At most meetings, it is only the audience (Ray, Martha and me), no one on the Board, itself, asking questions.

Board votes appear predetermined. No Board member expresses curiosity or interest about legislation before the public. Do they caucus out of earshot of the public without oversight? Would that be legal?

Why won’t the Board discuss what the public should hear at public meetings?

Why didn’t the incumbent Town Board candidates commit to attend the Maple Hill High School candidate forum? Why did they duck that open forum and kill that unique opportunity to speak to their constituents and to students?

Isn’t 2011 the year Schodack should elect just one candidate to the Board who will not be a guaranteed yes vote?

Don’t we need one advocate on the Board? Can we elect Linda Underwood to ask why, what, how and when?

Every person in town government is of one party. This has been so for nearing two decades. Can this represent you well?

Don’t you want an elected official who will ask why and how much?

The Board is spending our ever increasing taxes as it runs our town. SETTING the RECORD STRAIGHT ON SCHODACK’S TOWN FINANCES Letter to the Editor: There was a politically-motivated letter written by a political candidate regarding the finances in the Town of Schodack. I wish to set the record straight regarding the town’s finances.

During the past two years, the town has been fiscally conservative in the face of a tough national recession.

Town taxes have been stable and the town’s important services have been maintained even despite increasing costs.

The town has also placed an increased emphasis on reducing expenses wherever possible. The town has held off on filing some vacancies created by retirements or departures. In fact, the town has fewer employees on board now than a few years ago.

The fiscal management of the town has received praise. The respected financial analysts Moody’s recently reviewed town finances and found the town on solid ground. Solid enough ground that the town’s credit rating was upgraded.

Many municipalities are facing real difficulties and challenges during these times and find their finances in troubled shape. For Schodack to be both weathering a recession and receiving positive reviews from independent and respected analysts about town finances is definitely good news for our residents.

As a Councilman, I have worked hard to meet the challenges facing our town.

For the position of the town to be misrepresented for political purposes by town Democrats is unfortunate. Letter to the Editor: I happen to be one of those people who will take anything you say about me with a grain of salt. However, I will not sit back and let you defame my husband , Burt Rounds, who has worked long hours as the Town Supervisor during the past two years with a town board and an attorney who obviously take their orders from you. Although Burt asked to meet with you before the end of your term, you refused, you were angry that you did not win and the heck with a smooth transition which would have benefited the town.

During the first board meeting of 2010, you sat with an older woman and laughed and mocked Burt the entire time. I know this, because I was sitting right behind you. Who does something like that except an infantile little boy who is angry because he did not get his own way? You were determined to undermine the new supervisor and you did every chance you got. You visited Town Hall to meet with your people so frequently; some said you were there more than when you were the Supervisor. It also appears you feel it is your right to come into Town Hall and use the Town Clerk’s computer. A computer I would think would hold confidential information. If it is ok for constituents to use the Town Clerk’s computer, the public should be notified that it is available during regular working hours for their personal use.

Mr. Robelotto, I also have to say that I find your attempt to damage Chris Kronau’s reputation contemptible. Chris has served the town for many years and she deserves to be treated with the respect she has earned and deserves. In honor of the National 4H week, from October 3October 8, Jogging Juniors 4H club would like to share our accom-plishments over the past year. Our club welcomed new members and also said goodbye to our graduating members.

Our members participated in project demonstrations and our cloverbuds completed project records and participated in Horse Bowl. Our club members got together last fall and made various items to sell at a Tractor Supply Co. Fundraiser. We also had members who participated in horse events over the year. We rode our horses at the Schaghticoke Fair and our club helped at the 4H food booth during the fair. Besides riding in the fair, we also rode at the Grafton Trail Riders Gymkhanas over the summer; four Gymkhanas over four months. During the July and September Gymkhana, our club ran a food booth for the participants and visitors for the day. The Grafton Trail Riders also had an Over the Mountain Trail Ride, which our club volunteered ourselves to cleanup after the banquet dinner they had. We are looking forward to another great year as a club and all of the adventures that come with 4H. ~Submitted by, Kayle McNeil

IT’S NO WONDER Letter to the Editor: This week, we heard more bad news about President Obama’s economy. The so-called “misery index”, which tracks the unemployment rate as added to the rate of inflation, is at its highest in three decades.

The President has failed to revitalize the economy, more and more are angry and hurting, and Democrats know there will be a price to pay at the polls.

So it is not a surprise to see Democrats in Schodack try to confuse voters with a wild list of claims and outright misrepresentations about the fiscal management of the Town of Schodack. Democrats are obviously desperate to distract from their party’s considerable failings with the national economy.

As Democrats have completely failed on the national level to manage the economy, Schodack Republicans have successfully managed town finances and balanced budgets. The town has restrained spending during the Obama recession and protected needed services. Republicans have also been fiscally conservative and kept taxes stable, including a 2012 budget that comes in under the state tax cap.

It’s no wonder that Schodack Democrats want to confuse voters, when their party is responsible for so much going wrong on the national and Republicans can take credit for so much going right on the county and town levels.

Taxpayers may remember the news from earlier this year when Moody’s, a respected financial analysis firm, reviewed Schodack’s finances. Moody’s upgraded the town’s credit rating at a time when many other cities and towns are facing real fiscal trouble.

Residents would also be wise to remember a recent news article in which the former treasurer of the Schodack Democrats was arrested for allegedly embezzling money from the party.
