HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKING at LA SALLE INSTITUTE Students from La Salle Institute in 10th and 11th grade will have the opportunity to listen to Holocaust survivor Murry Jaros, of Niskayuna, speak and entertain questions on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, from 1 to 2PM in McCormick Hall at La Salle. Jaros will speak for approximately 40 minutes and then will take questions for the next 20 minutes. Religion Department Chair Jim Iavarone has had his students prepare questions to complement the study they have completed on the subject. Both History and Religion departments have organized the event. Iavarone commented on the upcoming event, “this is a very exciting opportunity for our students, and one I’m sure they’ll remember for a long time.”

NASSAU SUPERVISOR’S REPORT By: David Fleming

Students from grades Pre-k through 6th and even some alumni dance the night away.

At the Hop…Sock Hop that is….Sacred Heart School’s Parent School Association held its 9th Annual Sock Hop in coordination with the school’s annual raffle. With a crowd of over 250 parents and students, everyone danced the night away to music provided by Sound Spectrum.

CHURCH OF THE COVENANT The Church of the Covenant in Averill Park hosts its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 3. With more than one-dozen handcraft, gift and food shops, the bazaar is designed for all your Christmas shopping. You’ll find plenty of holiday-themed items, as well as year-round gifts and decor.

Upstairs we have handmade American Girl clothing, gifts for your pet, the Sweet Shoppe, plants, collectibles, the Country Store, handcrafts and religious items. Downstairs is for the kids. Decorate cookies, shop in the Kids-Only store, play games and make crafts.

Be sure to stop by the COC Cafe’. The restaurant specializing in chili, macaroni and cheese, sausage and peppers, assorted soups and other home-cooked options is an annual favorite.

The Church of the Covenant, also known as “The Round Church,” is located at 3055 Route 43 in Averill Park near the intersection of Old Route 66, just west of Burden Lake Road.

Prior to the recent passage of the 2012 budget, we had the opportunity to meet with our emergency services partners to discuss their budget needs. On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to thank them all for their dedicated service to Nassau and their successful efforts at providing the best services possible to our residents at the lowest cost.

We began our last meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of the late Earle N. Cooper, Esq. Mr. Cooper served Nassau for years in numerous organizations and as Tax Collector, Town Supervisor and Town Justice. We thank the Cooper family for sharing Mr. Cooper with us for so many decades and we offer them our sincerest sympathy.

I’m pleased to report Nassau has received another grant. Our town has taken the lead with other towns, to secure an economic development grant through the Greenway. We look forward to this study which will look at ways to promote and attract business that blends with our community character.

We have also posted on our website, the latest update on the Loeffel Toxic Waste Site work by USEPA. A pole barn is currently being constructed around the pumping areas at the site to allow for year-round removal of groundwater contaminants.

This is an important remediation action. Please follow the USEPA activities on our website.

The Board has also approved for sale as scrap, a 1968 loader and a 1994 dump truck. Information on these items is on the Town’s website.

We have begun meetings on the court required review of the TS&G permit application. All upcoming meetings relating to this matter will be posted on the Town’s website.

Additionally, the Town has updated the land use fee schedule and discussed the likely abandonment of the Brainard Cemetery, as well as the likely December notification on our pending grant application for the Burden Lake Sewer District.

We are also pleased to welcome James Kromer as a new member of the Advisory Committee on Farm and Agriculture Preservation and Dale Zipkin as a new Transfer Station Attendant.

We extend our thanks for their willingness to serve. We are always looking for more people to serve. Please contact me should you be interested in a committee position.

SAND LAKE KIWANIS CLUB HOLIDAY FOOD PROJECT As our community recovers from Hurricane Irene, an October snow storm and other historic weather, we look forward to the special celebrations that the holidays will bring over the coming weeks. The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake invites you to join us and our local partners in assisting our neighbors who need a helping hand this holiday season. Once again we are proud to partner with the WSL Hannaford Supermarket, The Walter Adams Post of the American Legion and Averill Park School District to provide meals to families in need on the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.

Pre-made food boxes are available to be purchased and donated at the WSL Hannaford. Elementary and Middle School children from Averill Park School District collected food to be distributed. The Walter Adams Post of the American Legion will provide storage space and room to distribute the food and toys collected. Sand Lake Kiwanis club will distribute the food and toys to those in need.

Maple Hill High School will host a College Financial Aid Information Night on Thursday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. This free event is for parents and students who have questions about the financial aid process. Jim Hanley from the Higher Education Services Corporation will present on the financial aid process in general and provide information about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

A STEAMBOAT WORLD Tom Allison will present “A Steamboat World” on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011, at 7:00PM at the Poestenkill Historical Society’s November program held in the Poestenkill Town Hall (RT 351) at 7:00PM. Once, the Hudson was the commercial life blood of the region.

Tom weaves the age of sail and team together with the life and times of Samuel and Thomas Schuyler. Both men made significant contributions to the economy. Beginning with sloops and small passenger steamboats, they grew into the largest steam towboat company in this part of the country. Early photographs and newspaper clippings illustrate a very different river from the one we know today. The public is welcome to this free program. Refreshments will be provided by Lori Winslow.

Recycling and environmental awareness are being encouraged at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in North Greenbush. The latest project of the Parish Social Justice Committee centers on reducing the use of plastic grocery bags. The committee designed the bags with a Parish logo, and the message “Save God’s Creation”.

Congressman Paul Tonko was the Honored Guest at a Communion breakfast last month, and spoke on the topic of Stewardship of our Precious Environment. Congressman Tonko discussed energy and environmental issues, and the attention they are getting in government today.

The breakfast event with its focus on the environment, provided an opportunity to introduce The Canvas Grocery Bag Program to the Parishioners. GUEST SPEAKER ON WORLD HUNGER & POVERTY at ZION’S U.C.C. Douglas Anderson, representing Church World Service/CROP, will be the guest speaker during Sunday worship, at 10 am on November 20th at Zion’s United Church of Christ of Sand Lake.

Mr. Anderson is the director of the upstate New York regional office of Church World Service, located in Syracuse, NY. He has served in this position for thirty-five years as a layperson covering 48 counties of upstate New York. During this period, he has had four overseas trips to Central and South America, the Middle East, India and East Africa. In 35 years, the upstate NY office has generated $40 million of resources for CWS through CWS/CROP Hunger Walks, CWS Blankets Plus program and CWS Kits program.

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the October 11, 2011 legislative meeting.

Along with the meeting, the past several weeks have included introduction of the annual county budget. County Executive Kathleen Jimino introduced the budget proposal on October 20, and the proposal stays within the state tax cap.

The fact that the budget stays within the tax cap is good news for taxpayers. However, the 2012 budget is just the latest to be introduced without any meaningful or needed mandate relief. Relief from state and federal mandates was promised when the state tax cap was approved.

Without meaningful mandate relief, needed county services will be jeopardized. County officials are hopeful meaningful mandate reform happens during the next several months to ensure services are protected during 2012 and have joined forces with other counties to continue lobbying for relief.

Along with the budget proposal that stays within the tax cap, legislators also saw the completion of the first phase of the state-ordered expansion of the jail. We are pleased to report the project came in $3 million under cost, with the savings due in part to a decision supported by legislators to hire a project manager.

The fact that the jail came in $3 million under budget is accompanied by news that the jail will potentially bring in several million annually from boarding inmates from other municipalities.

Legislators played a role in helping manage the first phase of the jail project to completion and will continue to work with the sheriff to bring about revenues to defray the cost of the project.

At the October 11 legislative meeting, we approved a resolution stating support for creation of the Return the Favor program, an effort that brings together merchants and community organizations to provide discounts and other benefits to veterans. We anticipate work on starting the project will begin this fall.

The Legislature also approved purchase of snow and ice control materials for use during the coming winter.

MAPLE HILL HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES STUDENTS of the MONTH for NOVEMBER In an effort to recognize outstanding achievements of our students, Maple Hill High School presents each month a Student of the Month Award. For the month of November, 2011, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Hunter Sanchez, Sophomore – Oteria Ludwig, Junior – Jennifer Hogan, Senior – Theresa Fuller Hunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sanchez, is nominated for being a student who is very hard-working, participates in class, and gets along well with others. He enjoys being in school and wants to do his best. Hunter is a member of Sources of Strength, Debate Club, and also works on the school yearbook. He enjoys the small school atmosphere here at Maple Hill. Hunter plans to go to law school in the future.

Oteria, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Ludwig, is nominated as being an excellent, dynamic, and personable young lady.

She always contributes in the classroom discussion and others look to her for leadership. Oteria is a member of Key Club, International Club, and Odyssey of the Visual Arts group. She also works on the school yearbook. Outside of school she enjoys cooking and drawing. Oteria plans to attend college to become a Graphic Designer or work in a museum.

Jennifer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Hogan, is nominated for being a polite, respectful student who always tries her hardest. She is focused and shows interest in her classes.

Jennifer loves to dance at the Eleanor School of Dance. She dances 5 – 6 days a week and is part of a competition team.

She is a member of Band and Chorus. Jennifer is looking to go to college to study Genetic Engineering or Creative Writing with a minor in Dance.

Theresa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Fuller, is nominated for working hard and actively participating in her classes. She participates in Band, soccer, basketball, track and field. Theresa enjoys the close knit feel of Maple Hill. She volunteers her time at the Sacred Heart Church in the Youth Group. Theresa would like to attend Western New England College to become an Optometrist.

The faculty and staff wish to congratulate these students on being selected November students of the month for their respective grades.

FINAL WORD ON SCHODACK DEMS BOYCOTT Letter to the Editor: After my paid political ad appeared here, just days before the Schodack Town Board election, the Schodack Democrats website featured a new headline: “In response to David Crawmer’s hit piece in the Advertiser”.

In that response, Linda Underwood continued to illustrate her complete disconnect with reality. She suggested I ran the ad for the benefit of the Republican Candidates she was running against. The fact is that I never met them, didn’t know what they stood for and was careful not to endorse them or even mention their names. I didn’t even have political signs on the lawn as Ms Underwood had falsely accused me of before when she advocated the boycott of my business.

My ad suggested she was unfit to serve on the board because her attempted boycott was counterproductive to the town’s progress.

This new page on the Schodack Democrats website features as much fiction as her original boycott webpage (since deleted).

She falsely attributes a description of one of the other boycotted business owners to me by placing quotation marks around her words. Using wild innuendo she then accuses that person of stalking her, of being my source of information and of being aligned with me.

But once again, this is a product of her hyperactive imagination.

The sources of my information were SEVERAL area businessmen who all, independent of any prior communication with each other, suggested that Linda Underwood would have been the Schodack Democrat behind the boycott.

The other source of my information was the Schodack Dems’ website itself where these business owners’ names, addresses, phone numbers, websites and email addresses were listed along with her admonition to contact each one and what to harass them (and me) about.

I had never met or spoken to any of those businessmen before (or since) calling to inform them that they were the subject of an extremely lame boycott attempt.

I wish to thank each and every voter who chose not to put Linda Underwood on the town board. DEAR AVERILL PARK SCHOOL DIST. COMMUNITY MEMBERS I would like to continue to provide insight on work being done by your district’s school system.

The Board of Education (BOE) is currently seeking input from the community in regards to the superintendent search.

• To provide input on the qualities you would like to see in our new superintendent, an on-line survey is available on the district’s web site. Paper copies of the survey will also be available in all of the district’s schools and in area businesses.

Survey responses will be collected until December 9, 2011.

After that time, the results will be compiled and a summary report provided to the BOE and the community.

• In addition to the survey, there will be a community public forum to solicit input on priorities for the district and for the new Superintendent. This forum will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 6:30 PM in the High School cafeteria.

SALVATION ARMY BELLS RING IN MEMORY OF CHRISTOPHER BASCOM

Several local residents are taking part in an internship this fall through SUNY Oswego’s Experience-Based Education Program.

They are (with their internship in parentheses): Nicole A. Ouellette of Schodack Drive in Castleton, a junior public relations major; (student athlete mentors, on the SUNY Oswego campus). John M. Bobilin-Stahl of Second Avenue in Troy, a senior art major; (art department, on the SUNY Oswego campus).

Adam R. Wolfe of Piney Point Road in Troy, a senior journalism major; (WRVO radio station, on the SUNY Oswego campus).

The Experience-Based Education Program at Oswego places students in internships and career awareness opportunities that allow them to earn college credits while garnering valuable real-life experience.

The Salvation Army bells will be rung at the East Greenbush Wal-Mart all day and evening Thursday, December 1st, in memory of Christopher Bascom on what would have been his 25th birthday. As in years past, family members and friends will serve as bell-ringers to honor a boy who was himself giving in nature.

Christopher was 16 years old and a junior at Columbia High School when he was killed by a hit and run driver in November, 2003. To honor his life and the values he held dear, it seems especially appropriate to commemorate his birthday by helping others. His passion was to make others happy; thus, his spirit and compassion for others will be perpetuated by ringing the bells in his memory.

The Salvation Army provides multiple kinds of assistance to the needy throughout the year, and at Christmas time it focuses on helping the less fortunate by providing them with toys, food, and other necessities. Therefore, people who want to honor Christopher, as well as contribute to a worthy cause, are encouraged to donate money to the Salvation Army in his memory. Such contributions may be made in person at the East Greenbush Wal-Mart (or wherever there is a Salvation Army kettle) or sent directly to the Salvation Army Headquarters Troy Corps, 410 River St., Troy, NY 12180.

LINDA UNDERWOOD RESPONDS TO CRAWMER’S PRE-ELECTION ATTACK PIECE Letter to the Editor: It is sad that Schodack Town incumbents were so frightened of someone running on issues this year that they had to resort to their tried-and-true personal smear tactics, this time via the pre-election attack piece by David Crawmer.

The source of David Crawner’s information – described by him to be a “businessman from Amsterdam” - has been cyberstalking and threatening me for more than eight months, long before I decided to run for Town Board. He focused on me after reading some of my comments on Congressman Chris Gibson’s FaceBook page.

These personal attacks escalated to the point that I feared for my safety and that of my mother so I contacted the State Police. He has been under investigation to determine if he has broken any laws, including aggravated harassment, criminal impersonation and identity theft. Sadly, because I was a candidate, I have fewer protections than the average citizen.

Some of what this “Amsterdam businessman” has done: Threatened to come to my home, force his way in and “demand” that I give back my pension. He tried to solicit others to join him. Created fake yahoo mail accounts with names similar to mine and used them to create multiple fake FaceBook profiles using my name, profile picture and all of my personal information.

He also created several fake campaign pages under my name, posting extreme points of view. He then went to Congressman Gibson’s wall to bring other people’s attention to them, insisting they were by the “real Linda Underwood.” The attacks were so frequent and personal that Congressman Gibson banned him from posting there. The “businessman” created multiple fake profiles to circumvent the ban.

At one point, my 91-year-old mother reported seeing the same car parked outside of our house for several days in a row. It sped away when she went outside.

This is the person David Crawmer has aligned himself with in an attempt to defame me.

During National Diabetes Awareness Month, the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) is speaking out on the important link between regular foot exams and diabetes management. And two studies show podiatric care can save limbs, lives and healthcare dollars.

The Thomson Reuters Healthcare Study addresses cost savings, with podiatric patients incurring lower costs and fewer amputations. The American Diabetes Association estimates the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes is $174 billion.

A Duke University study concluded that persons visiting a podiatrist and/or a lower-extremity clinician specialist within a year before developing all-stage complications were between 23 percent and 69 percent less likely to have an amputation compared with individuals who visited other health professionals.

Economic Hardship Consideration Added To Existing Offer In Compromise Program The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced new reform measures that will improve tax administration on behalf of taxpayers statewide. New eligibility consideration for severe economic hardship will allow the Department to offer more favorable payment terms to taxpayers with overwhelming tax liabilities. The new eligibility factors will be added to the Department’s existing liability settlement program known as the Offer in Compromise Program.

“The changes to the Offer in Compromise Program will allow us to provide relief for taxpayers experiencing undue economic hardship,” explained Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox. “The global economic downturn has made it more important than ever for government to provide more flexible payment options while at the same time protecting all taxpayers with a common sense approach to settling outstanding debt that may otherwise go unpaid.”

Prior to the changes, the Offer in Compromise Program limited the Department to accepting settlement offers due to insolvency or bankruptcy. Now, the Department can consider other factors that may make it unduly burdensome for a taxpayer to pay a liability in full. These factors could include extraordinary individual or family health care costs, or unemployment.

Each case will be carefully analyzed so that all taxpayers are protected. No settlement will be accepted that could decrease overall compliance or that would be counter to the best interests of the State.

“In many cases it is in the State’s best interest to settle with a taxpayer experiencing financial hardship,” said Commissioner Mattox. “For example, if paying the entire liability means a taxpayer will lose his or her home to foreclosure, it’s clearly in the best interest of the State, as well as the taxpayer, to agree to some form of settlement alternative.”

The Department will also implement a fixed twenty year statute of limitations. Delinquent debt collection rates decrease over time, and debt of an age older than twenty years is typically uncollectible.

by Claire Everett If one were to walk through the hallways after 2:30 pm this week, you would hear the shouts of wrestlers, the squeaking of basketball sneakers, and the repetitive footfalls of indoor track. Girls and boys basketball, wrestling, basketball cheerleading, indoor track, and bowling all started this Monday.

For many, this was the week to put it all on the line and prove to the coach that you have what it takes.

There is one Averill Park athlete who has been putting it on the line since early September. Andrew Tario was the only Averill Park runner to attend the Cross Country state meet on Saturday, November 12th. Tario placed 26th out of 129 runners. He ran his race in 17:54 with a pace of a 5:47 mile.

Outstanding job and congratulations on such a successful season!

Congratulations to all athletes who made an Averill Park team; I can’t wait to cover your upcoming competitions!

TURKEY TROT PACKET PICK UP OPENS SATURDAY, NOV. 19th Just over one week remains until the 64th Troy Turkey Trot!

Mayor Harry Tutunjian announced that Troy Turkey Trot pre-race packet pick up opens this Saturday, November 19th, in the Troy Atrium at 49 Fourth Street. Registrants will be able to pick up their bibs, tee shirts, and race packets from 9 AM thru 5:30 PM; and then again, Monday, November 21st, Tuesday, November 22nd, and Wednesday, November 23rd from 9 AM thru 8:30 PM. Race packet pick up will be closed on Sunday, November 20th.

Also, with just over one week to go before the 64th running of Troy’s Turkey Trot, there’s still time to register. Registration will be open online until noon Wednesday, November 23rd, the day before Thanksgiving. In person or mail registration will close at 4 PM, Tuesday, November 22nd. There is no day-ofrace registration.

Thousands of people will be heading to downtown Troy on Thanksgiving morning to run, volunteer, or cheer on friends and family. “Past the 30, the 20, the 10… and TOUCHDOWN”; varsity football player, Casey Slocum, plays for that exact reason.

Slocum is a senior at Averill Park High School and has been on varsity for two years. He started playing football in third grade and has enjoyed playing ever since. He has also played baseball for 12 years, but stopped last year so he could run outdoor track to become faster and stronger for the upcoming football season. During the season, you could’ve found Casey playing defense as either an outside linebacker or a strong safety.

His favorite part about playing football is seeing the results of all of his hard work paying off and being with his teammates day in and day out. Casey plans to play football in college and is looking to study in the field of criminal justice. He is hoping to become a law enforcement officer in the future. This year he is taking a handful of demanding courses such as Psychology, Advanced Placement Government and Politics, Cinema and Literature and Forensic Science. “My favorite class this year is APGAP (Advanced Placement Government and Politics), because I like the discussions during class and Mr. McPartlin, my defensive coach, is the teacher,” answers Slocum when asked about his favorite class. In his spare time, Casey enjoys hanging out with his friends and spending time with his family.

A touchdown as a defensive player is rare, but Casey managed to score two in one game this season! He certainly will be a player to watch next year at whichever school he chooses to attend. He was recognized this year for his talent by being on the Section II All Star team along with Joe Marino, Axel Bryce, Ben Leffler and Kevin Otty. Also he made the 1st team All League Safety, and was awarded Most Improved Player for Averill Park’s Varsity Football Team. NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE On Saturday, December 3, 2011, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

The course will be held at the Grafton VFW Hall on South Road (581 County Route 85), Grafton, from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, trailer safety, etc.

2012 SUMMER TEAM TRYOUT FOR THE 14U, 15U, 16U CAPITAL DISTRICT STORM The Capital District Storm, http:// capitaldistrictstorm.net/ was created as a competitive alternative to the current baseball opportunities in the Capital District region. The Storm’s organization participates in a competitive Travel league program to give its players the opportunity to compete at the highest levels of Travel baseball at both the local and national level. Locally, the 14U, 15U and 16U teams will participate in the ENYTB League playing the top travel teams from the Capital District area and beyond.

The Storm philosophy to maximize player development involves in-season as well as off-season training and instructional sessions with the involvement of locally recognized coaches.

The Storm organization continues to demonstrate a commitment to long term player development and will field a 16U, 15U and 14U team for 2012 season.

The team will hold weekly indoor practice and instructional sessions throughout the winter in preparation for the upcoming season. The Summer Travel season will begin on Memorial Day weekend, at the conclusion of the high school baseball season.

Prior to the conclusion of the high school season, we will hold practices and pre-season exhibition games on weekends.

Run for Funds. Under sunny but chilly skies, Holy Spirit School’s Race for Education took place on Friday, November 4th.

Elementary school students are shown waiting for middle school runners to approach the finish line. In the morning, the class roles were reversed as middle school students cheered on Nursery, Pre-K, and elementary racers. The Race for Education allows the students to combine exercise and movement and help their school’s technology program. Parent volunteers, teachers, and staff gathered all students for an awards ceremony in the afternoon where all were recognized for their participation.

TROY ELKS 2011 HOOP SHOOT The 2011 Hoop Shoot will be held on November 19th at the CYO Center located at 237 4th Street in South Troy. Registration starts at 8:15am and competition begins at 9:00am.

The competition is open to both boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13.

Contestant’s age groups will be determined by their ages as of April 1, 2012. Proof of age must be provided at the time of registration.

The winner in each age group will be eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot, after which there are competitions at the State, Regional and National level. The National Finals are held in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the top six finalists’ will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Olivia Logue with her Jr. Champion Jersey Heifer Penny The 2011 Rensselaer County 4-H Livestock Auction was held Monday, September 5, 2011 at the Schaghticoke Fair, in Schaghticoke, New York. The auction has become a great way for members to end their week at the Schaghticoke Fair in hopes of earning some money from the sales of their animals to put into their school funds or to reinvest into their 4-H Project.

Although it was a smaller auction than usual, there was still a great turnout! Members worked hard all year on caring for their animals and working on their handling skills. The youth are also required to keep a project record to teach them about profit / loss.

This was the first year we had a bred dairy replacement heifer, a jersey, owned by Olivia Logue and purchased by Murray Moore of Buskirk, NY for $1650. The other bovine of the evening was the Champion Market Steer, a Hereford, owned

by Brigham Logue and purchased by Ken Johnson from The Farm at Kristy’s Barn in Castleton, NY for $1725.

Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer.

As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our October 11, 2011 meeting.

Along with detailing the issues dealt with at the legislative meeting, I also want to update residents on the 2012 county budget proposed by County Executive Jimino. The budget does stay within the tax cap set by the state which is encouraging, and is the latest budget to be introduced without significant relief from state and federal mandates.

However, the 2012 budget proposal does call for the closure of the Rensselaer Senior Center. As the legislative representative of Rensselaer, I am opposed to the closure of the center and have met with those involved with the center on several occasions to discuss ways to keep the center open.

I understand the importance of the senior center, and the fact that it serves many Rensselaer seniors and seniors from towns like East Greenbush and Schodack. I further understand the proposed closure is due to the ever-increasing cost of state and federal mandates, but resolve to find ways to keep the center open and will keep residents informed.

Along with the senior center, a number of residents have contacted me concerned about the sudden cancellation of bus transportation by the Rensselaer school district for many students. I sponsored a resolution asking the school district to reconsider its decision and also have spoken to many residents about the issue.

As chairman of the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee, I am proud to report the completion of the first phase of the expansion of the county jail. The expansion was ordered by the state and was opposed by county officials due to the high costs. However, the county made the best of the situation and hired a project manager to oversee the work.

The project manager helped the county take advantage of changes in pricing, and the jail project comes in at $3 million under budget. In addition, thanks to careful management, the expansion will allow the county to collect several million dollars a year for boarding in inmates from other municipalities.

RESPONDING TO “ROUNDABOUT FOOLISHNESS” Letter to the Editor: On November 10th, Mr. Sevits wrote complaining about the roundabout being constructed at Couse Corners in East Greenbush. As a decades-long resident in East Greenbush, and also as a professional driver, I welcome the roundabout. Traffic delays on routes 4 and 151 have gotten worse over time, especially during rush hours. There have been many times that I’ve had to sit and wait for three or more light changes just to get through the intersection, although the wait would have been shorter except for the impatient drivers using the left turn lane to cut traffic. Waiting a mere 3 to 5 seconds behind an 18 wheeler in a roundabout takes a lot less time. I have been through many roundabouts, including the one on Route 9, and promise you that I have yet to create a bottle neck that wasn’t due to traffic already in the circle, or delayed any emergency equipment. Concerning the construction: as with any remodeling, one always has a mess from the tear-out before anything new can happen. You can’t hang the sheetrock before you put in the studs.

Mr. Sevits makes unsupported and dubious claims about the safety issue. With a little research, I found an article from “The Record Searchlight” http://www.redding.com/news/2011/ oct/01/counterclockwise-is-key-when-it-comes-to/ containing the following paragraph: “According to current figures from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts have been shown to reduce total crashes by 39 percent. The IIHS, a nonprofit research institute sponsored by auto insurers, also found that roundabouts reduced the number of crashes involving injury by 76 percent, and fatal crashes by roughly 88 percent. Roundabouts are also more aesthetically pleasing and less expensive than traffic lights.” I found this while trying to locate which state is supposedly removing roundabouts. I have found a few removing some of them for new highway projects, but none due to safety. I’d be interested to know which state is removing them, and will continue looking, but doubt if this is true. So it seems that the money being spent may be well worth it. A WARM COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT The next time you slip your hands into a cozy pair of mittens/gloves, pull a hat on your head, put a scarf on your neck or new clean socks on your feet on a cold morning, just imagine how sad it would be if you had to go through the winter with a cold head, neck, hands or feet! In Rensselaer County there will be many children who face that bleak prospect unless you lend a hand. From November 7th until December 20th, there will be a tree in the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County office with bare branches waiting to be filled with your donations of mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and socks. All sizes and colors are welcome, whether homemade or purchased. We would like to see branches hanging full of warm fuzzies.

This year we also are accepting donations of knitted newborn and preemie sweaters, booties and hat sets. So if you are a talented knitter, show off your talent by donating items to our tree.

At your next business or social meeting, why not collect mittens/hats/scarves/socks, then bring them by the basketful to our office where they will be hung. All of the mittens and hats/scarves/ socks will be donated to children through the Teen Stork Room coordinated by Tarasha DardenMcKoy. Let’s get going and warm your heart while you warm a child’s hands and head.

THE REIGN OF CHRIST THE SHEPHERD Sunday, November 20, 2011, is Christ the King Sunday. It’s the final Sunday in the Christian year and it is usual for Christians everywhere to celebrate the life and strength Jesus gives to us, the nourishment and health he offers. As the worshipping churches of Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed look at Ezekiel 34:11-16 , 20-24, they come to more fully understand Jesus’ use of the parable of the sheep and goats to illustrate the fate of the blessed at the last judgment, as well as the fate of the condemned.

On Sunday evening, November 20, the Nassau Reformed Church will be hosting the Nassau Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service, at 7 p.m., following a service of blending our hearts, thoughts and voices in Thanksgiving and Glory to God. All are invited to enjoy light refreshment and fellowship following worship.

Everyone is invited to worship with the Nassau Interfaith Community. The Nassau Reformed Church, which meets at 11 a.m. on Sundays, is located on Route 20 (Church St,) one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village.

The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in its chapel on Church St., one half mile south of the intersection of Route 26A and and Route 9J in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Its Thanksgiving Service is held in conjunction with the Ichabod Crane Clergy Association at St. Luks Lutheran Church, Valatie, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23rd.

All are welcome to worship with the folks in Northern Columbia County.

Hudson Valley Community College received $400,000 from the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation to create an endowed fund that will expand the Second Chance Scholarship program on campus. This donation is one of the single largest scholarship gifts in the college’s history. The Second Chance Scholarship Foundation, administered by the Mastrangelo family, originally awarded its first five scholarships at Hudson Valley in 1989 and later expanded to other area colleges.

Second Chance Scholarships are aimed at students who not only are in need, but who overcome tremendous personal obstacles in order to pursue an education. The goal is to reward those who demonstrate the initiative to achieve self-sufficiency through education. Students also must demonstrate academic achievement.

Over a 22-year period, more than 400 Hudson Valley students have received Second Chance scholarships totaling more than $1 million. In 2007, the financial aid office at Hudson Valley was named the Mastrangelo Financial Aid Office in honor of the benefactors.

Established in 1987 by Angelo and Kathleen Mastrangelo as the Joseph N. Mastrangelo-Ralph C. Arnold Foundation in memory of the couple’s fathers, it was later renamed the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation’s board and the Mastrangelos together decided to dissolve the foundation and distribute its capital base among colleges it supported in the past.

“Transferring our monies to the colleges will allow us to eliminate administrative costs and sponsor more students. We started our program at Hudson Valley and worked with them for more than two decades. We are confident they will continue to do an outstanding job with Second Chance Scholars,” said Angelo Mastrangelo.

“Students who attain their education against all odds are to be congratulated. With this significant donation to our Second Chance Scholarship program, we will help these deserving students above the standard financial aid amount, and give them the confidence to continue their education,” said Andrew Matonak, president of Hudson Valley. “We thank the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation for this gift.”

- Cute as a button and as happy as a clam! He is a sweet guy who was turned in as a stray and is now safe. He gets along great with other dogs and loves to play chase with them. He is approx. 1 - 1 1/ 2 yrs old, 25 lbs, current with vaccines, wormed and neutered. Friendly with everyone and has zero aggression. Dooly is crate trained and is not a barker. He is waiting for a new home where he can settle in and make someone as happy as he is.
