Douglas Anderson, representing Church World Service/CROP, will be the guest speaker during Sunday worship, at 10 am on November 20th at Zion’s United Church of Christ of Sand Lake.

Mr. Anderson is the director of the upstate New York regional office of Church World Service, located in Syracuse, NY. He has served in this position for thirty-five years as a layperson covering 48 counties of upstate New York. During this period, he has had four overseas trips to Central and South America, the Middle East, India and East Africa. In 35 years, the upstate NY office has generated $40 million of resources for CWS through CWS/CROP Hunger Walks, CWS Blankets Plus program and CWS Kits program.

Zion’s United Church of Christ supports CWS each year with the collection of Hygiene Kits, School Kits, Blankets, and taking part in annual CROP Walks. Working with partners, Church World Service builds interfaith and intercultural coalitions to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice around the world.

COUNTY’S FALL ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY A SUCCESS

The Rensselaer County fall electronics recycling day co-sponsored with eLot on October 22 was a success, drawing a significant number of county residents. Legislators Alex Shannon and Judith Breselor helped out at the recycling event.

The Rensselaer County fall electronics recycling day cosponsored with eLot on October 22 was a success, drawing a significant number of county residents, Legislator Alex Shannon and Legislator Judith Breselor announced.

The event drew approximately 250 cars, with residents disposing of unwanted electronics items including computers to refrigerators, stereos and VCRs dropped off for recycling.

“This was another good recycling event and helped many county residents to properly and safely dispose of unwanted electronics,” said Shannon, who is chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee. The county and eLot have sponsored six electronics recycling events with strong attendance at each event. Past events have been held at the County Office Building with the October 22 event held at eLot in South Troy.

Legislators said they are hopeful of joining with eLot to stage another electronics recycling event in spring 2012.

“We value the work done by eLot to help in organizing these recycling events. We know our residents appreciate the opportunity to conveniently dispose of unwanted electronics items and look forward to continuing our partnership with eLot,” said B reselor, who is a member of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

The recycling events are organized by the county Environmental Management Council and the Legislature along with Troy-based eLot.

Dunn, is among the 765 students who entered Colgate University this fall as a member of the Class of 2015. LEGISLATORS APPROVE RESOLUTION FOR VETERAN PROGRAM The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a resolution at the October, 2011 legislative meeting supporting a unique program to recognize the service and contributions of county veterans, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced.

The Return the FAVOR (Find and Assist Veterans of Rensselaer) program has been implemented in other counties across the state. The program invites merchants and organizations to offer special discounts to veterans to show thanks for service to the country.

Counties including Albany, Rockland, Warren and Saratoga, among others, have either implemented versions of the Return the FAVOR program. Along with a number of counties, the program has been supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation, and more information can be found at www.returnthefavor.org.

The Return the FAVOR program would have participating veterans register with County Clerk Frank Merola at the clerk’s office.

Reid said he will have legislative staff begin working to compile information for the Return the FAVOR program and contacting potential partners for the effort.

The resolution supporting formation of the Return the FAVOR program was approved unanimously at the October legislative meeting.

VETERANS DAY SERVICE AND OPEN HOUSE In celebration of Veterans Day, 11-11-2011, Melvin Roads Post will once again sponsor an all-day buffet honoring all veterans as well as those on active duty.

Veterans Day, November 11th, falls on a Friday this year, and at 12Noon, a brief but solemn ceremony will be held in the Post Lounge. Following will be a buffet prepared by Chef, Ed Ryan. All are welcome to join us through 6:00pm. There is no cost, and all veterans, active duty personnel and their families are cordially invited to attend. Last year, over 100 persons dropped by during the course of the afternoon.

ACL STUDENTS HELP SENIORS & VETERANS WITH LEAF-A-THON PROJECT

The Brunswick Historical Society has scheduled the following programs for the months of November and December.

To honor our veterans in November, we have scheduled a “military” program. Three World War II Veterans will speak about their experiences in serving our country. We are losing our WW II Veterans at a rapid rate, so to be able to hear these gentlemen speak is indeed a rare treat. They will also present a Power Point presentation. We want to show these gentlemen our appreciation for their service, with a good turn-out at this program. This program is scheduled for November 19th at 1PM at the Society Headquarters at 605 Brunswick Road in the Garfield School Building. Mark the date on your calendar and plan on attending.

Our program in December will be an Open House at our building on December 3rd at 1PM. The rooms will be decorated for the Holidays and refreshments will be served. This is a good opportunity to look over our rooms and our exhibits. If you have not visited the Society since our expansion, come in on that afternoon. You will be amazed at the changes.

Students from the Academy of Christian Leadership in Valatie are grabbing their rakes and coming to a lawn near you!

During the month of November, ACL’s middle and high schoolers will participate in the 8th Annual Leaf-a-Thon, a community service leaf raking project. This activity connects older and younger generations as the students help veterans, seniors and other residents by doing a fall clean up of their yards and lawns. Working in teams within local neighborhoods and communities, ACL students will spend an entire day dedicated to helping others.

ADRIANNA MAXFIELD DONATES 12" OF HAIR TO LOCKS OF LOVE Adrianna Maxfield, 8 years old, daughter of Scott and Nadine Maxfield, donated 12" of hair to Locks of Love for the second time on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Adrianna, a student at the Berlin Elementary School, wanted to donate her hair to help other kids, and to honor those in her family who have passed away.

Her first haircut was in loving memory of her Nana, Mary E. Maxfield, who passed away due to cancer and who would have celebrated her birthday on October 2 - which was the day in 2008 Adrianna donated her hair.

This time, Adrianna donated her hair in memory of her cousin, Valerie A Lashway (a young mother of 3 who lost a battle with Leukemia last year on Oct. 26). After watching her cousin Velerie struggle with cancer, lose her hair, and have to wear wigs - Adrianna was determined to donate her hair again to this cause.

I find it remarkable when a kid so young fully understands where their hair is going and what it will be used for.

Unfortunately, for 8 year old Adrianna, she has had to watch two special people in her life pass away from cancer. Her determination and strength is truly an inspiration. It goes to show that even though we can’t do much - we can do something!

TOWN OF SAND LAKE VAN Letter to the Editor: Yet again, I must write to correct errors expressed in writing by former Town Supervisor Steve Robelotto. Unfortunately, putting the word “FACT” before a misstatement does not magically make it true. It would not cost $81,000 to sell the current town van and replace it with an accessible one, the van should not have to be DOT certified (as long as there is no charge for the rides), volunteers could continue to drive it, and neither CDTA, the County, nor the Center for Disability Services provides rides to seniors and others with serious mobility impairments within the Town of Sand Lake. For the record, it should have cost the Town approximately $6000 above the $31,000 member item received to purchase the van, or less than a dollar per resident of Sand Lake, for it to have been accessible and available to all as required by law. AMS LIBRARY CELEBRATES TEEN READ WEEK October 16-22 was Teen Read Week, coordinated by YALSA, (Young Adult Library Service Association). What is Teen Read Week? Teen Read Week is a week to celebrate teens reading.

It began in 1998 and is a world-wide celebration. This year, YALSA chose the theme: “Picture It @Your Library”. Graphic novels and books about art and photography were the focus of this celebration and were showcased in the windows of the Algonquin Library. Why is it so important to encourage teens to read? There are many benefits to reading. To name just a few, reading helps teens with their ability to focus, it exercises their minds, opens their imaginations and helps them to better understand the world around them. Research has shown that teens who read independently have better exam scores and perform better in the workplace.

During Teen Read Week, when students came to the library and checked out a book, magazine or renewed a book, they could guess how many pennies we had in our jar for a prize.

After Teen Read Week, the pennies were counted. The final count was 2,818 pennies. The three runners up with very close guesses and winners of their pick of a poster from our collection were James Lownsbury, Joey Costa and Evan Butts.

The lucky winner with the closest guess and the recipient of the $25 Barnes and Noble gift card was Nick Ferra!

HOLIDAY SHOPPING TO HELP ANIMALS IN NEED

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on plans the Averill Park Board of Education has made in order to select a new Superintendent of Schools as well as highlight past and upcoming board presentations.

We will begin to seek input from the community on the superintendent search within the next week.

• An on-line survey will be posted on the district’s web site.

Paper copies of the survey will also be available in all of the district’s schools and in area businesses. Staff, students, and the community are encouraged to complete the survey in order to provide your thoughts about the qualities you want to see in our Superintendent. The survey will be available until December 9, 2011. After that time, the results will be compiled and a summary report provided to the Board and the community.

• In addition to the survey there will be a community public forum to solicit input on priorities for the district and for the new Superintendent. This forum will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 6:30 PM in the High School cafeteria.

The remainder of the timeline, as well as more detail on the steps taken to date is posted on our website (http:// www.averillpark.k12.ny.us/) under the Superintendent Search Process section.

The Long Range Planning Committee provided a comprehensive report to the Board on October 25th. This group was charged with doing a thorough review of our current facilities and providing the Board with their insight on potential work to be done. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and the report is available on our website.

MORE ROUNDABOUT FOOLISHNESS Letter to the Editor: The latest nonsense from the brain trust in Albany is the “roundabout” to replace intersection traffic signals. Whoever dreamed up this ill conceived notion has little grasp of reality.

New “roundabouts” have resulted in an astronomical increase in the number of traffic accidents in Florida. For the same reason another state is spending money to take them out after spending vast sums to install them.

Route 4 at the junction of 151 is a “roundabout” work in progress. After months of messy construction and the expenditure of great amounts of taxpayer money, the project is being wound down, unfinished, to languish over the winter season. Private property is being taken off the tax rolls to accommodate this project and a great deal of money is being spent at a time when all levels of government are short of cash.

It is fortunate there is an insurance office located nearby for convenience of motorists who will be making more damage claims. The ambulance squad adjacent to the new “roundabout” will likely do more business.

The nearby “roundabout” on RT 9 just north of Ichabod Crane School becomes a bottleneck every time an 18 wheel truck attempts to navigate it. Any firetruck or ambulance approaching that intersection is compelled to stop and wait until the big truck navigates its way around at a snail’s pace.

This does nothing to enhance public safety or convenience.

Why do we want to impede the passage of ambulance and fire trucks?

Army National Guard Pvt. Adam J. Wroblewski has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Wroblewski is the son of Gail Kidder of Thornberry Lane, Rensselaer, and Ed Wroblewski of Ternan Avenue, East Greenbush. He is a 1998 graduate of Guilderland Central High School.

St. Henry’s Fall Festival will be held Saturday, November 12th, from 9 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, November 13th, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The youth ministry will be running the Harvest Food Booth for pies, baked goods, jams and jellies and other harvest food goods. Lunch and dinner items will be available for sale on Saturday in the kitchen.

Coffee and donuts will be available for sale Saturday and Sunday morning. Once again the Fall Festival will feature a Chinese Auction with hundreds of dollars in gift certificates and merchandise from area restaurants and merchants.

E.G. SENIOR VICTIM SPEAKS OUT Letter to the Editor: I was the subject of an article in an Albany Times Union ‘The Advocate’ column on Sunday, 30 October. Several of my friends said that I had been portrayed as being somewhat ‘confused’ over some points discussed in the article. I think that I was less ‘confused’ than I was not in possession of all of the information which I needed...but, alas, as the EGB Assessor stated to me, it is not his job to ‘spoonfeed’ the taxpayer (in other words, to help the taxpayer).

And, unfortunately, some senior citizens do not even have computers (or do not make much use of them) nor - dare I say - even read ‘The Advertiser’...both of which, evidently were sources of all of the information which I needed. Foolish me.

Let me add that I have nothing but admiration and respect for the TU reporter and that, on the whole, she put together a basically accurate presentation of the case. However...had I been given the opportunity to rebut some of the EGB town officials’ statements to the reporter several additional facts would have emerged. I am pursuing this because if I could be victimized in a tax situation like this, so too, could a good many other senior citizens. Perhaps even more upsetting than the six-fold increase in my school-tax bill was the rude and arrogant manner in which I was treated by members of the EGB Tax Assessor’s office...although, as one official there pointed out, I do not have a recording with which to prove this. (I must, however, add that I have, consistently, been treated with nothing but courtesy and respect by the EGB Receiver of Taxes.) Incidentally, I am, politically, far to the left of the conventional Democrat...not, normally, a supporter of Republican - backed causes.

A STEAMBOAT WORLD Tom Allison will present “A Steamboat World” on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011, at 7:00PM at the Poestenkill Historical Society’s November program held in the Poestenkill Town Hall (RT 351) at 7:00PM. Once, the Hudson was the commercial life blood of the region.

Tom weaves the age of sail and team together with the life and times of Samuel and Thomas Schuyler. Both men made significant contributions to the economy. Beginning with sloops and small passenger steamboats, they grew into the largest steam towboat company in this part of the country. Early photographs and newspaper clippings illustrate a very different river from the one we know today. The public is welcome to this free program. Refreshments will be provided by Lori Winslow.

RENSS. CITY REPUBLICANS’ CHAIR URGES CITY TO ESTABLISH POLICE BLOTTER At the monthly meeting of the City Republican Committee last night, Chairman Lou Lourinia repeated his call for the City administration to establish a police blotter for reporting criminal behavior to the public for its own safety. These comments were based on five vehicular break-ins on Sunday morning, October 30th. Mr. Lourinia further called for City residents to contact Mayor Dan Dwyer at City Hall to demand establishment of such a record for public consumption.

“We have a right to know about police calls, particularly when they report violent activity that will affect other City residents,” Lourinia stated. “No one has the authority to withhold such information from us, not even the Mayor!” Lourinia stated.

Lourinia first stated the failure of the City to post police calls on a “blotter” at the regular bi-weekly City Council Meeting at city Hall, 62 Washington Street on Wednesday, November 3rd, at the public segment of the City Council Meeting.

The volunteers of the Sand Lake Ambulance would like to remind all residents and business owners that our 2011 fund drive is underway and to thank the many generous donors for their support.

All of the money raised by this annual fund drive is used to support the day to day operation of the ambulance company.

Our operation is supported by an annual appropriation from the town, revenue from billing insurance companies and revenue from this fund drive. It is very costly to provide full Paramedic service to the residents of the town 24 hours a day 7 days a week. However, that is what you deserve and that is what SLA is committed to providing, for as long as it is financially feasible. PROGRAM Sunday, November 13th, at 2PM at the East Greenbush Library: Speaker Ernie Mann will speak on the “Railroads in the City of Rensselaer—through the era of the villages to the 1840’s with the Troy and Greenbush Railroads through to the present with CSX and Amtrak.” The Rensselaer Train Station is the 9th busiest passenger station in the country with 24 trains daily carrying over 775,000 passengers yearly. Ernie Mann’s enthusiasm for the railroad began as a young boy growing up in Rensselaer. His father and grandfather worked on the railroad for 55 and 43 years respectively, and Ernie put himself through college working on the Penn Central Railroad. A lifelong resident of Rensselaer and retired Rensselaer school teacher. Ernie also was the city’s fire chief for many years. His recent book about City of Rensselaer railroads published by Arcadia books will be available for purchase and signing at the East Greenbush Library.

An accomplished scholar-athlete who graduated with honors from Troy High School, Class of 1963, and, the United States Military Academy at West Point four years later, 1st Lt. Roger Alan Fulkerson, was recognized for his service during a ceremony on Tuesday, October, 11, 2011, in the Legislative Chambers at the County Office Building.

Following his commissioning as an officer in the United States Army, and receiving advanced military training, Fulkerson began his service in Vietnam on July 8, 1968. On September 25, 1968, while serving as a forward observer in Duc Lap 1st, Lt. Fulkerson was Killed In Action after calling for artillery batteries to redirect fire onto surging enemy forces and ultimately onto his own position in an attempt to disrupt the enemy advances.

His actions were credited with saving several lives.

For his service, Fulkerson was warded the Purple Heart Medal the Silver Star, the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service, the National Order of Vietnam, 5th Class including Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Expert Rifle Badge, and, the Ranger Tab. “It is truly an honor to have the ability to recognize the service and sacrifice of William Fulkerson who through his selfless actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers while placing himself in imminent danger that ultimately cost him his life. William Fulkerson’s actions can be described as no less than heroic,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

by Claire Everett By way of introduction, I am a Junior at Averill Park High School.

I have been a Varsity soccer player for three years and hoping to play Varsity Basketball for a second time this year. Sports are one of my strongest passions. I love playing, watching, and now writing about Averill Park athletics.

This week, AP was able to enjoy a unique combination of sports; including a Powder Puff game, Dodgeball Tournament, and Cross Country Sectionals.

The much anticipated Powder Puff fundraiser was a blast to be a part of. The juniors battled against the feared senior class.

The senior defensive line was intimidating with Bridget Carney, Linzee Cushing, Rachel Wells, and Katie Vogel. But the juniors fought back with their great speed and agility shown by Sam Scanu and Allison Nunziato. In the first quarter, Molly O’Bryan scored the senior’s first touchdown. The seniors then converted a two point conversion, which set them ahead 8-0. The game raged on and the seniors scored another 2 points on a safety.

The game looked dismal for the juniors until Elaina Ryan recovered a fumble and returned it for touchdown. The juniors then succeeded in their own two point conversion. Although the juniors fought to win, the seniors prevailed. The two rivals will again clash in the spring.

The entire student body had a chance to participate in the unique sport of competitive dodgeball. This fundraiser resulted in thirty different teams vying for the title of Dodgeball Champion. Congratulations to team BBOC, the winners of the night. All students can again compete this Spring.

The highlight and definitely the most recognition-worthy competition this week was Cross Country Sectionals. On Friday, the Averill Park runners traveled to Saratoga to compete in the hardest race of the year. Out of 192 competitors, Andrew Tario of Averill Park placed third in the class B 4908m race, with a time of 5:08. Andrew will be competing in States this Saturday.

Congratulations! Also, kudos to Matt Miller who came in 26th, Chris Shaw who was 33rd, and Josh Foust who finished 62nd.

Great job to Andrew Glanton, Ben Harper, Shane Walsh, and Sean Harrington who also competed. The AP girls also ran their hearts out, featuring Elizabeth Roberts, Allyson Holland, Toni Slyer, Sammi Miller, Meghan Armlin, and Elizabeth Holland.

Congratulations to all runners on getting this far and having a great season.

NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE

THANK YOU FROM THE CAPITAL DISTRICT TRIATHLON CLUB

On Saturday, December 3, 2011, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

The course will be held at the Grafton VFW Hall on South Road (581 County Route 85), Grafton, from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, trailer safety, etc.

Self-motivation and dedication are the cheers that this cheerleader shouts. Myranda Berner is a self-driven athlete who succeeds by working hard and putting in 100% of effort at everything she does. She is a great student and varsity cheerleader. She has been on the varsity squad for four years and is both a fall and winter cheerleader. Berner has been cheering since seventh grade and has loved it ever since. She is also a girl with hopes and dreams that she will accomplish.

Myranda isn’t your typical cheerleader and intends to be that way. She says, “I like breaking the stereotype for cheerleaders by doing everything I can.” Myranda is a strong girl and has the work ethic to prove it. She plays rugby for Rensselaer Rugby and loves volunteering in her community. Berner also enjoys spending time with her friends, listening to music and snuggling up on the couch in front of her favorite movies.

Myranda is a busy girl, who likes to have a good time and help people. She is a member of the SADD club (Students Against Destructive Decisions) at Averill Park High School. She has been a member for two years and really enjoys being part of the group.

With all her extra-curricular activities, Myranda maintains an 88 GPA and is in honors classes.

Two of her most important classes are Advanced Placement English and Advanced Placement Government and Politics. Her favorite subject, apart from those, is science.

In the future, Berner plans to go to college to study fashion merchandising. She is also looking to cheer on an all-star squad and possibly be a coach someday. Her favorite part about cheering is performing stunts and participating in the competitions with her squad. “It means being a positive role model for everyone around me, not letting my team or coaches down, and cheering at every game and competition with 100% of my effort,” says Myranda when asked about being a dedicated athlete. Berner finds that the person who inspires her most is God. She says that he has really helped her through some tough times and feels she can look to him for aid at all times. Best of luck to Myranda as she begins her last cheer season at Averill Park and to her squad in their winter season.

The Capital District Triathlon Club would again like to thank the residents of Averill Park, Poestenkill & Brunswick. Each Tuesday of the summer, the club conducts training sessions which consist of a ½ mile swim in Crystal Lake, an 18 mile bike and a 3 mile run. We thank you for sharing your roads with us over the summer and we thank Crystal Cove for their continued support. On August 20th, the club held its annual Crystal Lake Triathlon in which 249 individuals competed. The club would like to thank the Sand Lake Ambulance, New York State Police, St. Henry’s Church, and the more than 100 volunteers for their support of our race. Proceeds from the race will be donated to Hannah’s Hope Fund and project HEAL. Our club has also adopted Route 66 from Crystal Lake Road to Route 351. Signs should be erected by the NYS DOT shortly, and you may see club members doing road cleanups from time to time.

TROY ELKS 2011 HOOP SHOOT The 2011 Hoop Shoot will be held on November 19th at the CYO Center located at 237 4th Street in South Troy.

Registration starts at 8:15am and competition begins at 9:00am.

The competition is open to both boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13.

Contestant’s age groups will be determined by their ages as of April 1, 2012. Proof of age must be provided at the time of registration.

The winner in each age group will be eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot, after which there are competitions at the State, Regional and National level. The National Finals are held in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the top six finalists’ will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

B.L.C.C. AWARDS BANQUET Heather Morrison was the most improved woman golfer of the year at Burden Lake C. C., and Brian Adams was the most improved male player according to the N.Y. State Golf Association G.H.I.N. program.

Jennifer DiIorio and Jim Kosakoski were selected the most dedicated members for 2011.

Selected players of the year were Heather Morrison, who won the stroke play championship, the Ladies’ Senior Club Championship, and was partnered with Melinda Govern in winning the member-member tournament, and John Keeler, who won the Mens’ Senior Club Championship and the Rensselaer County Sr. Championship.

Announcement of these winners was made at the annual awards banquet held at the club on Saturday.

The Storm’s organization participates in a competitive Travel league program to give its players the opportunity to compete at the highest levels of Travel baseball at both the local and national level. TWO MEN’S HOCKEY GAMES TO AIR NATIONALLY Versus/NBC Sports Network to carry a pair of Engineers home games The NBC Sports Group will air 16 live men’s college hockey games this season and two of those will originate from the Houston Field House and the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The Engineers gain national exposure on January 6 and February 3. To accommodate those contests, both games will now begin at 7:30pm, instead of the original start time of 7pm.

Rensselaer’s game against Dartmouth College on Friday, January 6, kicks off the four-game ECAC Hockey portion of the coverage by Versus, which will be re-branded as NBC Sports Network. The Engineers other game to be aired live is Friday, February 3, against Cornell University.

RPI now has eight games that will be televised this season. In addition to the two on Versus/NBC Sports Network, Time Warner Cable Sports will carry six contests. Three of those will be home games and the other three will be from the road.

BELIEVING IN THE PROMISES OF GOD On Sunday, November 13, 2011, the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed churches will focus on the letter of Paul addressed to the saints in Thessalonica, the capital and largest city of the Roman province of Macedonia. At the time, the Christian faith was being challenged and the people lived under the threat of persecution. Paul writes to the saints, there, who were holding on by their fingernails, waiting, hoping, and believing, year after year, expecting the redemption promised by God. He attempted to comfort and reassure them that the promises of God are trustworthy and true. In the sermon based on Thessalonians 5:1-11, and titled, “Believing in The Promises,” the Reverend Edward Van Kampen will speak to how we long for certain, undeniable evidence that God is real and that God is good.

RENEWED REQUEST FOR IMPROVED SIGNS AT I-90 EXIT 12 Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature and the Schodack Town Board are renewing a request to have a potentially serious traffic and safety issue in Schodack addressed.

During the past several years, there have been numerous problems due to tractor trailers and tandem trailers being misdirected by GPS in the area of Exit 12 on Interstate 90.

Legislators made a request to the state Department of Transportation in 2006 and 2008 for the improved signage.

Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid, Legislators Alex Shannon and Judith Breselor, and Schodack Council members Frank Curtis and Mike Kenney have joined up to renew the request for state action.

“This is a real safety and quality of life issue for residents in Schodack and we are again trying to convince the state to take action to correct the problem,” said Shannon.

“We have received numerous calls from residents who have encountered a wayward tractor trailer on their road or in their driveway. The drivers of the trailers are at least several miles away from their destination and with little idea where they are,” said Curtis.

Legislators and town officials said the fix could be as simple as having the state DOT position a sign at the intersection of Exit 12 on I-90 and Exit B-1 on the Thruway.

The improved signage would better direct trailers and tandem trailers to the Hannaford warehouse located near Exit 12. The warehouse has a mailing address and zip code for Schodack Landing, which is located several miles away.

Because of inaccurate directions from GPS devices and a confusion regarding the zip code, tractor trailers and tandem trailers heading to a busy warehouse often become lost. In many instances, the trailers end up on rural roads on Schodack Landing in the area of State Route 9J. “We have real concern that there will be a serious accident or incident because a tractor trailer has been mistakenly directed

by GPS to an area with narrow roads and low-hanging bridges.

The state needs to address this problem immediately,” said Kenney.

GREAT TRAIN EXTRAVAGANZA 2011 MAPLE HILL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH In an effort to recognize outstanding achievements of our students, Maple Hill High School presents each month a Student of the Month Award. Students may be nominated for this award by any staff member, a representative of a community organization, a parent or another student. Students may be nominated for a single outstanding achievement, for service to the school or community or for significant improvement in school. Each month one student in each grade, 9-12, is selected for this award by a faculty committee after a review of all nominations. For the month of October, 2011, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Peter Aitken; Sophomore – Brenden Roy; Junior – Shannon McCormick; Senior – Emily Santore Peter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Aitken, is nominated for being a student who is confident and is not afraid to take chances in his classes. Peter participates in Environmental Club, chorus, and plays JV soccer. Peter enjoys spending time on his family’s boat. He is planning to go into Law Enforcement after high school.

Brenden, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Roy, is nominated for being a very quiet student who consistently puts forth good effort. He always has his homework well done and is on task in class. Brenden is involved with our Hillstock show at the high school, plays guitar, and is a member of the Environmental Club. He enjoys the amount of school spirit here at Maple Hill.

Outside of school Brenden enjoys target shooting.

Shannon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doug McCormick, is nominated for being an excellent student that is very involved in community service projects. She tries to speak French all the time and it’s obvious she really wants to learn it, not just for the grades. Shannon plays volleyball and runs track, is a member of Student Council, SADD, Key Club, Swing Choir, Chorus, and Prom Committee. Shannon enjoys doing volunteer work and community service.

Emily, daughter of Mr. David Santore, is nominated for being a caring, compassionate and all around great student. She plays Varsity soccer, as well as the tuba in the high school band.

Emily is a member of SADD, Senior Class Secretary, and National Honor Society president. She enjoys the positive feel of Maple Hill. Emily wants to go to college to be a Chemical Engineer.

She is looking at RPI, Virginia Tech, and N.C. State. Outside of school, Emily enjoys snowboarding.

The faculty and staff wish to congratulate these students on being selected October students of the month for their respective grades.

Pet Adoption of the Week Quincy is a nearly-2-year-old neutered male Plotthound that is full of energy. Quincy is house trained, knows basic commands, loves tons of human attention and trains easily. He is neutered and up to date with required immunizations, is a non-barker and rides well in the car. Quincy lovesto swim, and will play fetch endlessly in the water or on dry land! Lives peacefully with a female dog, but recently developed a dislike of other male dogs. He is a bouncy, happy guy! Needs more exercise than his current owner can provide. A walk around the neighborhood isn't enough - he needs an active owner/family to tire him out or a large, large yard with plenty of room to run and play! Quincy is a great dog who is a ton of fun!

RENSSELAER COUNTY JAIL PROJECT COMES IN $3.2 UNDER COST Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature attended the official opening of an expansion to the county jail, with the project coming in more than $3 million under budget, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced.

The expansion was ordered by the state, but thanks to careful management by the county, costs were kept significantly below original estimates.

The first phase of the project was estimated to cost $47.5 million. The project actually came in at approximately $44.3 million.

“The fact that this project was brought in significantly under budget is excellent news for the county and our taxpayers.

These are challenging times fiscally, and this project shows the county’s continued focus on saving money,” said Reid.

“The county did not want to build this expansion and was ordered to do so by the state. The fact that we are able to keep costs down for a project of this size is definitely a plus and speaks highly of the project managers,” added Vice Chairman of the Legislature for Finance Phil Danaher.

Sheriff Jack Mahar was joined by County Executive Kathleen Jimino, Reid and Legislator Leon Fiacco in cutting a ribbon to open the expanded area of the jail. Sheriff Mahar led visitors on a tour of the expansion, including the kitchen, living areas and other spaces.

“This is a very modern facility and one that will suit the needs of the county for years to come. The fact that the county was able to come in $3 million under is great news,” said Legislator Leon Fiacco.

EGCSD RECEIVES SUICIDE PREVENTION GRANT The Rensselaer County Suicide Prevention Task Force has been awarded grant money from the New York State Department of Mental Health to assist in the development of a Teen Suicide Prevention Campaign throughout Rensselaer County. East Greenbush Central School District’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Angle Nagle, applied for a grant from the Rensselaer County Task Force.

Earlier this month, Dr. Nagle received word that the District had been awarded a $500 grant. The grant is earmarked for classroom supplies for an art project designed to deliver the message of suicide prevention through outreach. The students in Columbia High School’s Computer Graphics class will be making posters targeted to reach the county’s teenage population. In preparation for their project, Sergeant Tubbs, from the East Greenbush Police Department, recently visited the class to discuss teenage suicide prevention.

Rensselaer County Executive, Kathleen Jimino, stated, “Despite our best efforts to engage our youth, Rensselaer County communities have experienced the loss of youth due to suicide.

School districts struggle to deal with the devastating effect that a suicide has on a community and it is imperative that we cultivate a strong natural support system and work together to raise awareness with our students, faculty, families and overall community.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM OFFERS FREE COURSES TO VETERANS In honor of Veteran’s Day and in recognition of their dedication and commitment to service, the AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) is waiving entrance fees to its classroom courses for veterans in New York and across the country in November. All military personnel, active duty or retired, are eligible to receive a free DSP classroom course during the month of November (Nov. 1-30, 2011). Military personnel include those individuals who serve or have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard/Reserves, or Coast Guard.

Military spouses (including widows and widowers) and dependent children are also eligible to take the class, free of charge, as long as they present valid military spouse, widower, or dependent identification, such as a dependent ID card or a membership card to organizations such as the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars. The classroom course normally costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Since 1979, the AARP Driver Safety Program has helped over 13 million drivers learn safety strategies and adapt to physical and cognitive changes related to aging. The course teaches valuable defensive driving skills and provides a refresher of the rules of the road. Plus, participants may qualify for an automobile insurance discount by completing the classroom course.* With classes offered in communities throughout New York state, veterans should have little difficulty finding a class that’s conveniently located. Classes are limited in size, however, so those interested should call early to find a class that fits their needs. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, firstserved basis.

After signing up for a course, participants should bring a valid military identification to the classroom—such as discharge papers (DD Form 214), American Legion cards, dependent ID cards or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) cards. Participating veterans will be asked to complete a Veteran Participation Form as part of the course, which will be provided on site by the instructor.

A WARM COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT The next time you slip your hands into a cozy pair of mittens/ gloves, pull a hat on your head, put a scarf on your neck or new clean socks on your feet on a cold morning, just imagine how sad it would be if you had to go through the winter with a cold head, neck, hands or feet! From November 7th until December 20th, there will be a tree in the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County office with bare branches waiting to be filled with your donations of mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and socks. All sizes and colors are welcome, whether homemade or purchased. We would like to see branches hanging full of warm fuzzies.

This year we also are accepting donations of knitted newborn and preemie sweaters, booties and hat sets. So if you are a talented knitter, show off your talent by donating items to our tree.

EGCSD STUDENTS CROSS SOCIAL BOUNDARIES DURING MIX-IT-UP DAY

East Greenbush Central School District’s Howard L. Goff Middle School students joined more than 2 million other students, across the country, in the 10th annual “Mix-It-Up Day.” Teaching tolerance, the Mix-It-Up program is a national campaign that helps schools develop inclusive school communities. According to the national program, “No where in school are students’ boundaries of group membership more clearly drawn than in the cafeteria.” With the help of the staff, Goff students were randomly assigned to cafeteria tables and thereby given the opportunity to connect with “new” people. Students thrive—socially and academically—in schools that are inclusive. Yet, for far too many students, schools are hotbeds of exclusion. Social scientists have long maintained that contact between diverse groups helps alleviate tensions and reduce prejudice. Mix-It-Up seeks to break down the barriers between students and improve intergroup relations so there are fewer misunderstandings that can lead to conflicts, bullying, and harassment.

More than 5,000 schools, nationwide, participated in this year’s Mix-It-Up Day, which is sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project. Organizers agree that Mix-It-Up Day encourages students to cross group lines and meet new people. Mix-It-Up also fosters school spirit and unity, raises awareness about social boundaries, and helps students meet different kinds of people.

PIANO RECITAL The piano students of Mary Lou Kunz will play in a piano recital on November 18th at 7:30PM at The Brunswick Church Worship Center.

Students between the ages of six and sixteen will play pieces

by Mozart, Clementi and other composers including songs from the Harry Potter movies.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER REENLISTMENTS Citizen Soldiers extend their service to state and nation Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.

Sergeant Keith Adams from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Detachment 1 Company A 1-224th Aviation Supply and Services Battalion. Specialist Matthew Whalen from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Combat Aviation Brigade 42nd Infantry Division.

Sergeant Major Charles Tillman from East Greenbush, has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company 369th Sustainment Brigade. Sergeant John Chaffee from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company Brigade Special Troops Battalion 27th Infantry (Brigade Combat Team). Master Sergeant Mark Miron from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Intelligence and Sustainment Company 42nd Infantry Division.

November 8th what a day, 29 years ago god blessed me with a son named Joe, born with 10 little fingers & 10 little toes. As his precious little face peered up at me, I couldn’t help but smile at the miracle god had given me. I was granted 20 years to enjoy his life until that frightful day when he was taken away. It seems like yesterday when you went away, but it’s been almost 9 years now since you’ve been gone, given to god, now an angel, you watch over me.
