Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature are mourning the passing of former Legislator Dom Denio of Melrose, who passed away.

Denio was a well-known public servant, referee of scholastic sports for decades and patriarch of a large family that included 18 children. Denio was also a veteran of World War II. Denio served as a member of the Legislature from 1974 through 1989, winning re-election three times. He served as a representative of the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, and was active in numerous community organizations.

“We join Dom Denio’s family and many friends in mourning his passing and recognizing his contributions to Rensselaer County as a member of the County Legislature and other public service organizations,” said Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid.

Current Majority Leader Ken Herrington served with Denio during the mid-1980s. Despite being a Democrat in a legislative district that favored Republicans, Denio was recognized as a very strong vote-getter.

“Dom was very well-known throughout the district from coaching and refereeing school sports and he had a great support network from his family. You could always count on Dom to run very strong on Election Day,” said Herrington.

“From serving in World War II, to working as a coach and a referee, to representing his neighbors in local government, Dom Denio lived a great American life. We are sad to learn of Dom’s passing this week,” said Legislator Thomas Walsh Sr. The Legislature has endeavored to recognize the service of past members of the County Legislature with a memorial area at the rear of the legislative chambers. Denio will be added to the memorial wall in a future ceremony and a resolution mourning his passing will be considered at the July legislative meeting.

GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK TO HOST OFF-ROAD TRIATHLONS IN JULY Sky High Adventures and Grafton Lakes State Park announce that Off-Road Triathlons will be held at Grafton Lakes State Park the weekend of July 16th and 17th, 2011. The Sky High Kids Off-Road Triathlon, a USA Triathlon sanctioned youth event, will take place on Saturday, July 16th, with a 9:00 am start time. The Sky High Off-Road Triathlon at Grafton Lakes, a Nissan Xterra Points Series Race, will take place on Sunday, July 17th, with an 8:00 am start time.

The Sky High Kids Triathlon includes a 100m swim (within the roped area of Long Pond), 5k bike ride (paved sidewalks, paths and walkways), and 1k run (around the picnic area).

The race is open to youth ages 7-17.

The Xterra Course includes a 1k swim, 20k mountain bike ride, and a 6k trail run.

Participants may register on-line at www.skyhighadventures.com or pick up an application at the Grafton Lakes State Park office. Course viewing, packet pickup and late registration will take place on Saturday, July 16th, from 7-8am for the Kids Triathlon and from 12 to 3 pm for the Xterra. The Children’s Triathlon allows for only individual entry.

However, the Xterra triathlon may be competed as an individual or as a team.

The top finishers in each age group of the Xterra event earn points to qualify for the Xterra National Championships in Lake Tahoe and the World Championships in Hawaii. Several Grafton athletes qualify and compete each year in the National and World Xterra Championships. The Xterra Triathlon held in Grafton Lakes State Park has become nationally known for its excellence, and is a true test for any athlete seeking a challenge.

As legislative representatives of District 5, which includes the towns of Hoosick, Petersburgh, Grafton, Berlin and Stephentown, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the June 14 legislative meeting.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hoosick Falls is one of the more historic structures in the county. The church was constructed starting in 1858 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

A group of residents have worked to secure funding to protect the church and have applied for two grants from the state. We sponsored a resolution supporting the two grant applications and supporting the efforts of residents to protect this important structure.

Legislators authorized two weeks paid vacation for Hudson Valley Community College employees returning home from active duty. We also approved resolutions for the repair and maintenance of county roads.

We were very concerned by reports of a benefits fraud scheme totaling over $6 million in neighboring Albany County. The fraud was carried out through the use of electronics benefits cards.

We asked county officials to review security measures now in place to ensure such a fraud does not take place in Rensselaer County.

In recent weeks, we have been notified about accidents on a stretch of State Route 7 in Hoosick, near the scene of a serious accident involving a propane tanker. We will be calling on the state to review the area of Route 7 in question and to take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of motorists and residents. Increased signage in the area may be one way to improve safety conditions in the area. The new Rensselaer County Officials and Services Directory for 2011 is now available. The Officials and Services Directory includes information about organizations and services available in the county, and is available free of charge to residents and businesses in the county.

SEAMAN WAGER COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING Navy Seaman Recruit Cody J. Wager, son of Jimene J. and Donald E. Wager of Troy, N.Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Wager completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”.

This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Wager is a 2008 graduate of Lansingburgh High School of Troy.

HULIHAN NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT NORTHEASTERN Northeastern University is pleased to recognize those students who distinguish themselves academically during the course of the school year. Brunswick resident Thomas Hulihan, a Northeastern University student majoring in computer engineering, was recently named to the dean’s list for the Spring semester 2011, which ended in May 2011. Mr. Hulihan also achieved Dean’s list status in the Fall 2010 semester.

To achieve the dean’s list distinction, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality point average of 3.25 or greater out of a possible 4.0 and carry no single grade lower than a C during the course of their college career. Each student receives a letter of commendation and congratulation from their college dean.

These collectors are willing to pay big money for those items that they are looking for.”

One gentleman holding his check for over $1,250 in the lobby of the event yesterday had this comment: “I am so happy I decided to come to the Roadshow. I saw the newspaper ad for the event and brought in an old German sword I had brought back from World War II and some old coins, and here is my check.

What a great thing for our community. I am heading home now to see what else I have that they might be interested in.”

The Roadshow continues today starting at 9 a.m.

GRAFTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S JULY MEETING The Grafton Historical Society’s July meeting will be held at the Grafton Town Hall on July 20, 2011 at 7:00 PM. Our speaker will be Phyllis Chapman. She has been a historical interpreter for more than 10 years, has a masters degree in museum education from Skidmore College and has worked at the Bennington Museum and Bennington Battlefield site. Phyllis has made presentations at the Park McCulloch House in Bennington and the Quaker Meeting House in Chatham and numerous other historical societies.

Her presentation will be a Clara Barton interpretation and will discuss Clara’s life before the Civil War, her work during the war as a nurse and after the war in locating POW’s and missing soldiers. This led to the creation of the American Red Cross.

Phyllis will bring artifacts and replicas of Civil War medicine objects and will be in costume.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the June 14, 2011 legislative meeting.

Like many taxpayers, we were concerned by reports of a benefits fraud scheme that may have totaled $6 million in neighboring Albany County. The fraud was carried out through the use of electronics benefits cards. We asked county officials to review security measures now in place to ensure such a fraud does not take place in Rensselaer County and to ensure taxpayers are protected.

As legislators, we have supported enactment of a tax cap to help control the burden placed on state property taxpayers. The State Legislature approved a property tax cap that essentially limits tax increases to 2 percent across the state.

This is potentially good news for taxpayers, but local elected officials across the state, while supportive of a tax cap, are concerned by the lack of mandate relief. Mandate relief is needed as state and federal mandates have risen to unprecedented and costly levels. The cost to the county for the Medicaid program alone has risen to over $40 million, and there has been little progress by the state and federal government in addressing mandate relief.

Without mandate relief, costs for state and federal mandates will continue to increase and eventually make tax caps obsolete or ineffective. We have joined with local elected officials across New York in asking for comprehensive mandate relief to help protect taxpayers and ensure the continued viability of the tax cap.

CCE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

-Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino reported the results of the County’s recent enforcement operations.

Participating agencies included the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department, North Greenbush Police Department, East Greenbush Police Department, Schodack Police Department, Nassau Police Department, Troy Police Department, and the Rensselaer Police Department. During the operations nearly 400 vehicles were stopped resulting in 8 arrests for DWI (Driving While Intoxicated while indicating a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher).

“Driving drunk is never acceptable and all too often causes senseless tragedies that can devastate an entire community,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino. “I want to thank all of the law enforcement agencies who participated in this operation for their continued efforts to keep our streets safe.”

“Getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking alcohol is incredibly dangerous and incredibly stupid,” said Sheriff Mahar.

“There are enough regular hazards on the road in day-today driving. That is why the most frustrating part of dealing with DWI’s is knowing that these tragedies are completely preventable. Law enforcement will not tolerate drivers who place the lives of innocent bystanders at risk. It is also important to remember that if you are caught, besides the embarrassing and humiliating arrest process, there can be devastating financial consequences as well.”
