Bill Douglas is no stranger to the boards having recently played prosecutor Hugh Dorsey in Parade, Wilbur in Hairspray, and Gangster #2 in The Drowsy Chaperone.

Spotlight Players will present Nunsense, Amen this July 20-23 at the Columbia Performing Arts Center at 8:00 pm with an additional Saturday matinee at 2:00 pm. Come ½ hour early and enjoy the NunShow preshow which promises to be 30 minutes of nunsensical humor.

The Columbia Arts Center is located at 962 Luther Road, East Greenbush. Spotlight Players is an Adult Community Theater which is part of the continuing education program of the Columbia School District. We have been proud to bring adult theater to the greater East Greenbush Community for over 30 years.

McGRATH NAMED TO PRESIDENT’S LIST AT SIENA Kathleen M. McGrath of Averill Park has been placed on the Siena College President’s List for the spring 2011 Semester.

Students who have earned recognition through the President’s List have maintained a GPA of 3.9 or higher for the semester.

Kathleen will graduate Siena in the spring of 2012 with a biology degree and plans to continue on to graduate school for physical therapy.

Kathleen is the daughter of Kevin and Christine McGrath of Averill Park and a 2008 graduate of Averill Park High School.

FIELD DAY AT ST. JUDE’S SCHOOL SLCA PRESENTS BATIK WORKSHOP Sundays at the Center Batik Workshop with Pat Smart on July 3 at 1:30pm. $5pp.

Batik is an ancient Indonesian method of decorating fabrics using hot wax as a resist for successive dye baths. Pat will explain the traditional method for Batik and give a brief history. She will demonstrate the wax and dye process. Participants can then try their hands at waxing and put their fabric in an already prepared dye bath.

While the fabric is drying (about 30 minutes) Pat will talk about and demonstrate dye painting and answer any questions. The fabrics will then be rinsed and wrapped in plastic for taking home. At home, participants will lay it out to dry and iron out the wax with absorbent paper. (Adults and children 6 and up if accompanied by an Adult, otherwise 12 and up). Limit 16 persons. 4th of July celebration will be held at the Malden Bridge Community Center from 10am until 1pm with the offering of Strawberry Shortcakes being the highlight of the event. CLINTON HEIGHTS FIRE FIGHTER RENADETTE GRADUATES FROM UNION Chief Randy Cherubino of The Clinton Heights Fire Department (CHFD) is pleased to announce that Fire Fighter Kristopher Renadette has graduated from Union Graduate College, Schenectady, New York with a Masters Degree in the field of Science in Engineering and Management. FF Renadette, a Department of Defense civilian employee for the Army is employed as a Mechanical Engineer at Benet Laboratories, located at the Watervliet Arsenal. He joined the CHFD in April, 2010. Further, while completing his graduate studies, Kris successfully completed the Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course. A native of Plattsburgh, New York, Kris did his undergraduate studies at Clarkson University. He is engaged to enter into marriage next summer with Magen Reyor. POPULAR IN EAST GREENBUSH Letter to the Editor: As election season draws near, at least 9 candidates will focus their efforts on becoming popular. 5 will succeed in that goal, and bask in their glory for 4 more years.

The candidates who get the most votes aren’t necessarily the most reliable. Citizens can’t automatically go to, count on, or trust that person. It doesn’t measure the impact they’ve had on our community, and it is no indication of their character.

Popularity is the trophy of the elected, a shiny balloon that will deflate with time.

For many, this will be the second year in a row with an intense focus on the popularity contest known as an election. The campaign volunteers, political maestros, town employees, potential town employees, anonymous commenters, and bystanding citizens all wait with baited breath. Some watch as if watching TV while folding laundry. Others couldn’t look away if they wanted to. The realization that the board is one of many cogs in our community is beyond comprehension for some. Like oil in water, they refuse to acknowledge that anything other than the 5 member town board could POSSIBLY have any meaning.

While this massive rubbernecking occurs, many will keep the focus on what can be done to improve our community. The focus for these outstanding citizens doesn’t change. For them, the popularity contest is a sideshow, a distraction for the real work that needs doing. The election matters, but it’s not the penultimate. The work will continue despite who sits on the dais, or which set of political brownnosers earn W-2s from our hard earned property taxes. The work doesn’t depend on the board; it never has and never will.

Come November, the 5 people who are declared ‘most popular’ will still not be the same people who make our community great.

There is a 100% chance that no matter who wins, we will have to make progress in spite of who gets elected.

This year all three scholarship recipients are recent graduates from Averill Park High School. In reading each of their narratives, it was obvious experiences they have had with 4H played an important role in their lives and in planning for their future.

Janna Berard has been awarded the $1,000 4H Teen Council Scholarship. She is a 12-year Independent 4H Member. Janna started with projects in photography, needle arts, and entomology, but soon branched out into other areas where she excelled. Janna has been a Teen Leader for the Fashion Revue and served as an Emcee in the Youth Building at the NYS Fair. At the Schaghticoke Fair, she was instrumental in producing the News of the Fair and coordinating activities in the 4H Building. Janna will attend college in the fall; her goal is to earn a B.S. degree in dietetics and to become a licensed registered dietician.

Morgan Kunz has been awarded a $500 4H Teen Council Scholarship. She has been an active member in 4H for 11 years. She has been involved in the horse program for all 11 years and in the last 4 years has put her effort into photography, art and the teen programs. Morgan has well represented Rensselaer County 4H by participating in many regional and state-wide programs. She was awarded the Lohnes Award for the horse program in 2010, along with the Golden Horse Shoe Award and end of year High Point Award.

She will be attending college this fall majoring in graphic arts and continuing onto a four year school to finish her degree to become an art teacher.

Katherine McIntyre has been awarded a $500 4H Teen Council Scholarship. Her involvement in 4H has been growing over the past 13 years. She participated in horse competitions on the regional and state levels and joined teen programs such as Teen Ambassadors and Teen Exchange; all of these opportunities allowed her to meet new people and discover opportunities. Katie is also certified as a Teen Shooting Sports Instructor and was selected to go to the 2011 International SHOT show in Las Vegas to represent the NYS 4H shooting sports program. Katie will continue her excellence at college this fall studying Equine Science.

Letter to the Editor: The current majority of the North Greenbush Town Board under Councilmen Desso and Spain have refused to place town board meetings back on Time Warner Cable’s Public Access since they took control of town Government. The previous administration passed a resolution which permitted the meetings to be broadcast and they were until this majority took over.

Public participation in government should always be encouraged and the taping of these town board meetings for cable tv allowed busy citizens who could not attend board meetings to keep informed of the business of town government and equally important, how the board members conduct themselves.

We have read of the conflicts which have occurred at town meetings and the treatment afforded the Town Supervisor who has apparently had enough and is not running again. But seeing these meetings on tv allows every resident a second chance to catch up despite busy schedules, work loads and kids.

It is my hope that this board will do the right thing and begin again the broadcast of town board meetings on public access tv. There are so many issues which have caused conflict in our town from Ethics Boards that never meet, the hiring of politically connected non-resident lawyers in town jobs, to the wisdom of one person holding two elective offices at the same time.

Far more issues that I can mention here.

It is in the spirit of openness that North Greenbush politicians should allow every citizen the right to see them at work. To do otherwise serves only to permit actions which ultimately serve to diminish our ability to hold government accountable. ~Kim Margosian, Troy

MARK RUST: FAMILY SHOW IN GRAFTON Mark Rust, a multi-talented performer from Woodstock, will give a free concert for the entire family at the Everett Wager Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Rd, on Thursday, July 7th, at 7pm. This show is entertaining, interactive, and educational for all ages.

WHAT THE EFFICIENCY OF AVERILL PARK SCHOOLS CAN’T CHANGE Letter to the Editor: My previous letter noted that according to the Fiscal Accountability Supplement of State Education’s (SED’s) School Report Card, Averill Park’s (AP’s) total expenditure per student is well below the average for school districts that SED considers similar to AP. I also reported that AP’s lower EPS has resulted in a school tax rate that is among the lowest of districts with property value and income per student similar to that of AP. In this letter, I want to begin to clarify not only what the findings mean, but what the findings do not mean. Most importantly, AP’s relatively low tax rate does not mean that the school tax is not an economic hardship for many homeowners and businesses in the AP community.

That hardship is guaranteed – regardless of how efficient the AP district is – by the way we fund education in America: through a flat tax on local property value. That method taxes lower income property owners in AP at the same rate as higher income owners; and that same rate is only slightly below the average for the 39 Capital Region (CR) school districts.

Why is APs tax rate only slightly below the average for the CR even though AP’s EPS is considerably lower than the average for the CR? The reason is that the vast majority of CR districts have greater property value per student than AP. With higher property value per student, a district can charge a lower tax than AP even though they operate less efficiently than AP, i.e., have a higher EPS. So AP’s operating efficiency doesn’t change the fact that the school tax is an economic hardship for many AP households.

But while such hardship remains an issue, what should not be an issue – and should never have been an issue – is how efficiently AP schools are run. Compared to other school districts in our region, the answer to that question is: “very efficiently.”

POLICE NEED HELP FROM ACCIDENT WITNESSES The North Greenbush police department is investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred about 7:05 PM on June 21st in front of 99 North Greenbush Road. The accident occurred when a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander colored Blue, made a left turn into a business located at 99 North Greenbush Road, while completing the turn a 2006 Yamaha colored black, collided with the passenger side of the truck.

On this Lord’s Day, the Stuyvesant and the Nassau Reformed Churches will worship in a theme stemming from Matthew 11 wherein Jesus teaches about the Kingdom. In Matthew 11:1619 and 25-30, Jesus offers a sure, simple, and restful way to deal with the religious experience or spiritual communion. In contrast to the heavy burdens of obligation often associated with spiritual commitment is to “Come to Me.” In a sermon of that title, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will offer that we need to come to a sense of peace as we encounter God. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J, approximately one half mile South of the only traffic light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Everyone is welcome to worship with the church family at Stuyvesant Reformed and there is a sermon for the young folk each Sunday.

As summer is upon us, the Town is in full swing in terms of summer activities. Our Youth and Recreation Department is busy getting ready for camp, which begins July 6th. QUESTAR III’S REC STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL TECHNICAL HONOR SOCIETY On June 1, in recognition of outstanding achievement in career and technical education (CTE), 15 students from Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center (REC) in Troy were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) - the country’s highest award for excellence in CTE. Two additional students were re-inducted for a second year of membership. The ceremony was held at Rensselaer High School before a large gathering of friends and family.

Inductees took the membership pledge and participated in the lighting of candles representing the attributes of a National Technical Honor Society member: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

Commending the students, Questar III Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andy DeFeo said, “You have demonstrated through your academic achievements, commitment to service and leadership that you are willing to … put in the extra effort to serve as a role model for your peers. When other students seem satisfied with middle of the road performance, you have navigated into exceptional levels of academic achievement and program performance.”

THE DEFREEST HOUSE ON JORDAN ROAD I will never be able to sort out all of the Defreests in North Greenbush. There are 169 Defreests buried in the Bloomingrove Cemetery in Defreestville. The one this article will focus on lived in a still standing house on Jordan Road. This was David Defreest.

Just to complicate things he was also know as David Deforrest.

David Defreest was born in 1747 and died in 1815. He was called “dicken” David”, a Dutch term, loosely translated as “chubby”.

Contemporaries probably called him this so as not to confuse him with his grandfather David who presumably was not so “dicken”.

There is some uncertainty as to when David’s house on Jordan Road was built. Typically the house has been dated to 1765 based on a cast iron fireback found in the house with that date.

Additionally, there is a 1767 map of the Rensselaer Manor (today’s Albany and Rensselaer Counties) which shows a David Defreest house, but it is located on the wrong side of the road. There are several theories for this. The mapmaker may have got the location wrong or perhaps this was the location of “grandfather” David Defreest’s home.

What’s interesting is that modern technology has been able to pinpoint the date the house was constructed through a method called dendrochronolgy or “tree dating.” Basically, this science can date the time when tree rings were formed, in many types of wood, to the exact calendar year. Five samples taken from the first floor joists of the house point to a date of 1771.

Although this is circumstantial, “dicken David” married in 1770 and may have built the house for his bride and future family. David didn’t live here his entire life. In 1789, he purchased land on the Wynantskill, near today’s Burden Pond and operated a gristmill there by 1791-92. The property was the subject of a famous court case “Corning v. Troy Iron and Nail Factory” but that’s a future story. This was about the time his son Lucas married and became owner of the Jordan Road property which remained in the Defreest family until 1900.

So if you’re driving down Jordan Road, look for the Dutch Bond brick Defreest homestead with a historical marker out in front- it’s also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization in our local community! Girl Scout activities can be based on badges, journeys (bigger projects), service projects, or just for fun activities. Troops usually meet once every 2 weeks and there are optional neighborhood programs (ex. Ice skating, ice cream social), and council programs (ex. camping and travel opportunities) that girls can participate in as well. The younger troops tend to focus more on badge work, the middle school troops and high school level troops tend to focus more on travel and fun activities.

Also in our community, we have a teen troop (6th – 12th grade) that is dedicated to hiking and only does trips during the year.

Girl Scouts is for all girls kindergarten through 12th grade. We are forming new kindergarten troops now so that we will be ready by September. KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT ST. TIMOTHY’S VBS For more than 25 years, St. Timothy’s has been creating summer magic at its Vacation Bible School. AVERILL PARK YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE Averill Park Youth Soccer League invites you to join our local soccer league for our Fall Recreational Program. This is an all-play, noncompetitive league that focuses on learning the skills and fundamentals of soccer and most of all, having fun!

Teams are formed for the following age groups: Kindergarten; Grade 1/Grade 2; Grade 3/Grade 4; Grade 5/Grade 6; and Grade 7/Grade 8.

All games are played on Sunday afternoons with one practice during the week.

The season runs from September 11th through October 30th. Registration is on-line via at www.apysl.org and ends July 20th.

The Adirondack Bobcats U-15G soccer team brought home the gold following a perfect Princeton, New Jersey JAGS girl’s tournament where over 200 teams participated from nine states on June 18th and 19th. Defensive tenacity paid off as the Bobcats shut down one team after another. The Bobcats won their division without giving up a single goal.

Coach Tim Cross smiled as he handed out awards to his players.

He had encouraged the girls to ignore the brutal heat and the tournament would come to the team willing to endure the most.

After the game, Coach Tim told the players how he is always amazed at their resolve. “We often talk about doing this for each other rather than ourselves, that everyone is accountable.

And, success on the field and future plans for soccer don’t exist without a solid academic background. These girls came together from across the capital district, developed deep friendships and trust in one another and made it all work on and off the field.”

The 2011 Sand Lake/Butler Park Summer series has started its 20th season! This year, as in the past, the runs will be held on eight Thursdays, finishing at the end of July. The Kids Runs (800M, 400 M, and Mile) start at 6 PM, with the road races (2.5 mile or 5.0 mile) starting at 6:30 PM. All of the Kids Runs will be held within Butler Park, and on the grass fields. The longer Kids Runs will incorporate the woods just behind the fields on nice dirt trails. The Road races will continue to be held on the roads, incorporating RT 43, Old Route 66 and Gettle Road. There is no registration fee. Runners will be asked to fill out a race waiver, which is available at the pavilion. So, for some fun, as well as terrific exercise, come on out and join us!

NASSAU BASEBALL’S BUS TRIP TO CITI FIELD The Nassau Baseball Association is setting up a bus trip to Citi Field on July 17th. The Mets vs. the Phillies at 1:00. Seats will be in section 519. This is just to the left of home plate. The seats are under an overhang to protect from the sun or rain.

Yankee Trail bus will leave the ballfield on John Street in the village of Nassau at 8:15 sharp. Tickets for the game and bus trip are only $60 each.

2011-2012 FEDERAL DUCK STAMPS ARE NOW AVAILABLE IN SCHODACK Donna L. Conlin, Schodack Town Clerk, would like to announce that the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps (Duck Stamps) are now available. The stamps may be purchased for $16.00 from the Town Clerk’s Office. Each waterfowl hunter, 16 years of age and over, must carry on his/ her person a valid Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp and also carry a valid New York State small game hunting license. For Local Hunting Regulations, please contact the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

The stamp sales provide money for migratory bird habitat conservation projects. Additionally, Federal Duck Stamps can be used to gain free admission to National Wildlife Refuges.

STAMMEL PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO CAMP ADVENTURE

Rensselaer County Legislator Mike Stammel has provided funding assistance to help with the 2011 summer season at the Southern Rensselaer County Boys and Girls Club’s Camp Adventure.

Camp Adventure is located on picturesque Burden Lake in the Town of Sand Lake. The day camp hosts a variety of activities including swimming, hiking, basketball, softball, volleyball and other games.

The 2011 summer season is expected to include 85 campers from throughout southern Rensselaer County. Stammel has been an active supporter of the camp.

Like many in Rensselaer, Stammel and his family attended summer camps sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club. As with other community organizations, funding is at a premium for the Club.

To help support the 2011 season at Camp Adventure, Stammel provided $1,000 from legislative funds.

“The Boys and Girls Club provides great services to youths in Rensselaer and the southern part of the county. Funding is very difficult for community organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and this funding will help make the 2011 summer program at Camp Adventure a reality,” said Stammel.

“We hope the summer at Camp Adventure is a fun and educational experience for everyone,” added Stammel.

The Boys and Girls Club has operated Camp Adventure for 50 years, and the camp was located on Burden Lake in 1968.

AVERILL PARK FIREMEN TO THE RESCUE At 8 pm on June 17th, at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts, there was an audience waiting to see a show, but there was no power at the Center. At that point the Averill Park Firemen were asked if the show could be held in the firehall. Without hesitation they said “YES.” The show took place, a bit later than advertised, but with great performances and an appreciative audience.

I am very grateful I am to be living in a community with these people who were so willing to help out. I’ve always been grateful for these volunteers, knowing the sacrifices they make to help people in serious situations. This situation was not dangerous or life-threatening, but important to the people involved, and the Averill Park Firemen were great examples of kindness, community support and friendship. “SON SURF BEACH BASH” AT THIRD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Summer is quickly approaching and you know what that means – Vacation Bible School! This year’s program at Third Presbyterian Church (115 Winter Street, Troy) is “Son Surf Beach Bash” and will be held August 8th – 12th from 6:15-8:15 P.M. All children and youth aged preschool through fifth grade are invited to join us. Why do I need Jesus? How can Jesus help me when I mess up? What does Jesus mean to me?

“Son Surf Beach Bash” is not just for children. We also offer an adult Bible study/discussion group.
