SAND LAKE CITIZENS JUST SAY NO No to the Robelotto team of Glasser, Turner and their appointed lawyer Donna Cole-Paul. This is not the election to vote “party affiliation”. It is time to vote for the positive change and responsive government represented by the Fasoldt, Cioffi, and Sniezyk Team.

A Team that will: • Reduce the cost of Town Government operations while maintaining quality services.

• Limit legal costs by reducing attorneys’ salaries, changing the benefit structure attendant to that position & by reducing the number of merit less legal suits brought in response to vindictive actions against Town employees (ie.Town Planning Board Chair), failure to meet court imposed deadlines (ie.TS&G re Zoning), failure to negotiate in good faith with employees, and by failing to comply with Federal Law (ie.Community Van).

• Abide by Town Board policies & procedures which make meeting agendas available on a timely basis.

• Restore civility and accountability - no more will citizens be labeled as “vultures” or called “silly” and “old”.

• Hold appointed employees accountable for missed deadlines and incompetence which result in costly law suits.

Town leadership and personnel should be elected and appointed based on competency and true commitment rather than familial loyalty or party cronyism. If we elect the same old team we deserve the same old results, a dysfunctional board. We deserve a new team, one that has the skills and commitment to make this a better town.

We don’t need a Supervisor whose “my way or the highway” mentality has slandered our Town Clerk, threatened the President of the Friends with arrest, and one who rather than admit an error or to comply with a Federal legal opinion continues, through his team, a vendetta at a high cost to our handicapped citizens and taxpayers.

GIVE YOURSELF A REASON TO VOTE Well, it’s almost that time of the year again: Election Day. As time goes on, it seems like there are fewer reasons to vote than the year before and it gets more difficult to drag ourselves out to the polls. It’s not as if we want to feel this way, it’s just that life, as challenging as it usually is, seems to provide an endless supply of excuses: the candidate(s) who I supported in prior years didn’t win; that all the candidates are really the same, and choosing one over the other doesn’t really make any difference; because my one vote isn’t really going to matter; that life, as we know it, will still go on whether or not I vote; or that given the tough state of our economy and personal circumstances, it just isn’t that important.

The list continues.

One of the interesting dynamics about elections is that, in spite of the various reasons that we use to justify not voting, people tend to vote more often when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race.

Indeed, folks are more inclined to set aside the excuses and come out to vote when a race is at the federal or state level, but then stay home when the races are only local. People often view larger government as being more important government and, therefore, more worthy of their attention.

Certainly federal and state candidates who purchase expensive advertising would like you to believe so.

However, when you really stop to consider the relative significance of your vote at the local level and the issues that really affect your lives the most, it’s ironic that many people will opt to stay home during local elections. Without a doubt, based upon the math alone, our vote counts so much more for a town or county race than it would ever count for a state or federal race. Moreover, decisions made by locally elected officials are likely to have a much more direct impact on our lives than those made by officials at the state and federal levels. Whether it’s an issue regarding public works, emergency services, planning and development, or the taxes that are collected to pay for them, it’s the most basic services delivered locally that have the greatest effect on our quality of life. Without exaggeration, the votes that we cast for local candidates during just one election cycle will matter more than those that we cast for state and federal candidates during perhaps several election cycles.

I, therefore, ask that you resist the temptation to not vote, this year and beyond, and try to realize the significance of local elections in terms of both your individual participation and the dramatic effect that their outcomes have on our lives; however, if you can give yourself a better reason to vote, go for it!

All proceeds will support the APHS Orchestra Trip in April 2012 to Philadelphia, PA., where the students will compete along with other high school Orchestra’s. NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY Susan Gersten didn’t deserve Steve Robelotto’s bullying, disrespectful, arrogant response to her complaint in the Advertiser about the way he handled the community van in Sand Lake.

Ms. Gersten has lived in our community for over 40 years and we should be proud to have a resident like her. She taught school for many years in a tough city school, several of them from the seat of a wheelchair. She has authored a book on traveling for the disabled and she is an accomplished photographer. Sadly, she now is quietly and courageously fighting a life threatening illness. She should be treated with respect.

For Mr. Robelotto to say she complained only because she is my neighbor, I remind him that she is a closer neighbor of his son, his brother, and his mother. She has a mind of her own.

The only reason the Town is now wasting taxpayer money defending a lawsuit is because Mr. Robelotto violated federal law by buying a van that can’t be used by people like me who have impaired mobility. He has nobody to blame but himself.

Mr. Robelotto is lying when he claims that only drivers certified for wheelchair duty can be used. Volunteers don’t need to be certified. He also knows very well that the alternatives he claims could be used are not actually available and that the price he cites for complying now is a ridiculous exaggeration.

These lies are bad enough. But insulting and demeaning an accomplished senior citizen in our community is unacceptable.

ALGONQUIN MIDDLE SCHOOL American Education Week is being observed during the week of November 14th. As my administration winds down, it is time to review what has or has not been accomplished over these last couple of years.

A committee of representatives from the town, county, NYS Department of Transportation, Capital District Transportation Committee, RPI, and elected officials’ offices met monthly over the past two years. Unfortunately, no one else from the Board participated beyond attending one meeting. This group developed a plan for putting the final details in place before we receive the funding from Washington for the I-90 connector.

The Committee wrote a request for proposals to hire an engineering consultant. The engineers would be expected to determine whether the 14 million we have in Washington will be sufficient, to identify where the connector will meet Exit 8 and ensure there are no surprises to contend with along the way.

Doing this mini-project would have been tangible evidence that the town was squarely behind the connector. However, the Board majority felt it was premature as there are no assurances that Washington’s funding would come through in a timely manner and voted not to go forward with this project.

Revitalizing Main Avenue is a project that started in the previous administration. They secured a small grant from the State to hire someone to create a committee composed of residents and businesses who should be involved in visualizing changes and to work with them to plan for the next stages. This also has been delayed by the Board majority, based on concerns that it might raise issues the community is not prepared to deal with yet.

On a more positive note, much has been accomplished in the public safety arena. This committee meets monthly, first contributing to the County natural disaster plan and now completely revising the town’s emergency handbook providing the needed guidance to contend with events such as the recent storms. Members of the HR/Finance Committee are revising an employee handbook last written in the 1990’s. Even though most of the town staff is now unionized, there are still areas that need to be addressed in terms of conditions of employment along with guidelines for those who are not unionized.

THE SCHODACK DEMOCRATS BOYCOTT EFFECT As distasteful and counterproductive as the Schodack Democrats’ boycott of several area businesses was, I think it deserves a deeper look into the mindset of those who would advocate such a thing. I called the owners of the other businesses being boycotted and each of them, even those who resided as far away as Amsterdam and Galway, suggested the person behind the boycott to be Linda Underwood, a candidate for Schodack Town Council. They all knew her from numerous altercations they had with her, suggesting her to be a left-wing extremist.

The week after I heard about the boycott advocated on a page of the Schodack Democrats’ website (that page has since been deleted), I wrote a letter to the editor here and mentioned that my business, Greenbush Computer Fare, was on their list. That week I witnessed a noticeable surge in sales as well as several phone calls of support from past and future customers. I thank you all. Their boycott did not have the intended effect.

But what if it did result in the intended reduction in business?

It really would have been self-defeating. Among other things, it would send business to the big box stores outside of town.

It would mean reduced sales tax revenue and less available payroll for my employees. That would be ironic because many of my employees adhere to left-wing philosophies. We often discuss politics at work but we do it with open minds. There is no vindictiveness. We all have the same goal.

Having an agenda that is counterproductive to progress is the last thing we need on the Schodack Town Board.

NORTHEND NEIGHBOR.MEETING The Northend Neighborhood Group will meet on Thursday, November 17th, at 7 pm. It will be held at the Northend Firehouse Community Room.

I would like to share some of the things that have been happening in the Town of Schodack. I am very pleased to let everyone know Schodack is financially sound. Town Board fiscal restraint as well as conservative financial planning and budgeting have enabled Schodack to achieve a strong financial position. This is clearly demonstrated by Moody’s recent upgrade of Schodack’s bond rating to Aa3. A quote from Moody’s report reflects confidence that “the town will continue to demonstrate strong financial operations given the trend of management’s conservative budgeting practices and commitment to maintaining reserves approximating current levels.” Why is this important? Businesses that are looking to locate or expand in a specific area consider the financial stability of the local government as a determining factor in the decision making process. Schodack meets this criterion. The Town Board members working cooperatively with the Comptroller have and will continue to make sound financial decisions.

Even though economic conditions are not favorable at this time, we strive to control expenses and maintain services to residents. Since I took office in January, 2010, we have experienced personnel reductions in the Highway, Police, Justice Court and Building departments by a total of eight positions. As part of sound management and constant evaluation, we are analyzing the impact of these reductions on our ability to provide appropriate services and will make necessary adjustments.

I am also pleased to let you know our conservative approach to budgeting is working. During the last two budget cycles, we have implemented departmental budget practices designed to have department heads develop financial projections and functional objectives. The results demonstrate every employee’s commitment to fiscally responsible Town budgeting.

We are controlling expenses by applying sound management principles. What is the result? The 2011 Budget had a less than 2% increase over 2010. The 2012 Budget will be in compliance with the 2% New York State tax cap. The foundation for stabilizing taxes is now in place. We are working very hard to attract businesses and stabilize taxes. The Town of Schodack continues to move forward with implementing conservative budgeting practices and sound management decision making.

NASSAU SUPERVISOR’S REPORT By: David Fleming Our dedicated highway crew is continuing to repair damage from Irene and preparing for winter. Meanwhile, the Town continues with progress on a number of fronts.

The Board has approved my recently presented 2012 Budget for a public hearing to be held on November 10 at 6:30 p.m.

This proposal leaves the general fund tax rate the same (0.00% increase). Due to the impacts of Irene and related flooding as well as the massive escalation in state mandated pension costs, increases in health insurance and the cost of fuel, the Town’s proposed highway budget may increase by 1.78% in 2012.

We have also reported being one of the few communities to secure a $5,000 grant from the State to improve our transfer station operations. Thank you to Mr. Sears and Mr. McCagg for their assistance with yet another grant.

The Town has been successful in securing an extension of financing and more funds for the Burden Lake Sewer District.

This will mean that we will have $3.5 million at 0% financing available for this project for two additional years. I would also like to thank Senator Gillibrand who has just sent a letter of support to the State for our requested $600,000 grant for the Sewer District.

The Board has approved a request for proposals (RFP) for solar energy panels for the highway garage. We are seeking installation of panels to save operational funds while also having them installed at no cost to the Town.

We have approved a special use permit for the construction of a parish house on China Hill Road and approved a contribution from our celebrations budget for the upcoming youth party at the Hoags Corners Firehouse. Please watch the Town’s website for information.

We have also appointed Zach Bradt to the Committee on Farm and Agriculture Preservation. Thank you to Mr. Bradt for his willingness to serve.

The Board has also discussed the potential abandonment of Brainard Cemetery, authorized the purchase of materials for the Transfer Station and discussed the proposal for planning and zoning fees based on town law.

We have also approved expending $3,800 for a new copier for the Justice Court. This expense is paid for from yet another grant secured by the Town. That grant was for $26,000 in court updates.

BEING READY Sunday, November 6, 2011, is Communion Sunday at the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches. The highlight of worship will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper with focus on how Jesus works in our lives to prepare us for His presence among us; and for eternal life.

In the sermon, based on Matthew 25:1-13, and titled “Being Ready,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will address how crisis, struggle, judgment, and tragedy are to be expected in living the human life; and how we need to be prepared for times of difficulty and testing.

We need to be grateful that Jesus promises to give us what we need to be ready for fateful times in our lives. APHS ANNOUNCES COMMENDED STUDENTS in the 2012 NAT’L MERIT® SCHOLAR. PROGRAM The principal, Colleen Gomes, of the Averill Park High School announced that Ashley Bloomfield and Randall Feldhusen have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. WHAT GOOD IS A CODE OF ETHICS Letter To The Editor: At last month’s meeting of the Town Board and Ethics Board, Council Person Sue Mangold stated that if a third vote was needed to vote for her brother’s business with the town, she should not have to abstain.

She felt it was unfair for her brother’s business to suffer if she couldn’t provide the third vote. Council Person Malone spoke up saying, “are we to stifle commerce if Sue Mangold can’t vote on her brother’s business with the town?” No board member spoke up to challenge the ethics of Ms Mangold’s comment.

No Council Person should vote on any resolution that would financially benefit themselves or family members. This is a conflict of interest and Mangold and Malone should have known better than to suggest such a thing. What good is a code of ethics when the town board chooses to run this town by THEIR OWN “ethical” standards?

NORTH GREENBUSH BOARD MEMBERS KELLY HOFFMAN AND JOE BOTT PROUD TO SERVE WITH COUNCILMEN SPAIN AND DESSO For the last two years we have been proud to serve on the North Greenbush Town Board along side Al Spain and Lou Desso. We are even prouder to say that while collectively we are from three different political parties we have been able to put our party differences aside and work closely together for the benefit of all who live in North Greenbush.

For the last several years our colleagues Al and Lou have been relentlessly attacked in the press by C.B. Smith and his allies. We have read the misinformation that Smith has spread in his attempt to gain control of our Town. The “platform” from the C.B. Smith team seems to be nothing more than distorting our record of accomplishment over the last two years. We would like to set the record straight about two of those issues.

We changed our Comptroller earlier this year following the report of an audit performed by an independent CPA firm that was referred to us by the Comptroller himself. That firm found a number of problems and discrepancies in the Town’s financial records. One month later an auditor from NYS found the records in such bad shape that he was unable to perform a financial audit, and settled on a policy and procedure audit. We then hired a part time comptroller at a reduced salary with no benefits. While the vote to change the comptroller was four to one at the time, our supervisor later agreed that it was the right thing to do.

The Youth Department was another area where we were able to realize significant savings while improving the services offered our youth. We consolidated the Youth Program among other employees, and asked our volunteers to do more. The result was improved services, increased utilization, with a $70,000 savings to the taxpayers. The vote of the Board on this was unanimous.

In both cases – Comptroller and Youth, we cut costs and improved services. We did this in a respectful, professional manner. It was C.B. Smith who politicized these moves, dragging these people through the press and the mud in the process.

In closing, we would like to thank our fellow Board members, Al Spain & Lou Desso, for remaining professional and never lowering themselves to the C.B. Smith level of politics. We are proud of them and their accomplishments for our Town and will stand with them this election. We respectfully ask you to do the same on November 8th.

EAST GREENBUSH FINANCIALS Residents have recently expressed concern over the 2010 Financial Statements and I wanted to take the opportunity to clarify where we stand: In April 2011, the Town Board approved a three-year agreement with Toski, Schaefer & Co., P.C. to perform Financial Statement Audits for the Town. At this time, it was decided to delay the filing of the Annual Update Document (AUD) with the NYS Comptroller to avoid having to re-file after completion of the independent audit.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the auditors were on-site collecting data until late July/early August. Admittedly, there have been a number of delays, the audit has progressed much slower than expected, and we are well behind the initial schedule for the release of the Financial Statements. At no point has a member of the Town Board asked that the Audit results be withheld, delayed, or “sat on”. To the contrary, the Board has been anxious to see and share the results.

The Town Board and I have been open regarding the finances of the Town and the progress made on the Audit findings from 2009. Both topics have been discussed numerous times in Town Board Meetings and Citizen’s Fiscal Advisory Committee (CFAC) Meetings.

As an indication the Town is on the right track, Moody’s removed its negative outlook - an important first step in restoring our Bond Rating. The Town leadership - elected and appointed - continue to work together to stabilize Town finances.

NORTH GREENBUSH CLERK MISLEADS IN “LETTER TO THE EDITOR” Letter to the Editor: I was shocked to read my name in a “letter to the editor” to the Advertiser dated October 27th, from Town Clerk Connolly. I have never written a letter to the Advertiser and was quite disturbed to see my name used by a politician to rebut other people’s assertions about a Democratic Town Caucus last year.

For the record, at no time did I ever call Clerk Connolly or anyone else to urge that Republican Louis Desso miss a Town Board meeting and three public hearings he was paid to attend by taxpayers so that he could be “invited” to the opposition political party caucus held the same night.

Further, I did not ask Mr. Desso to run against the Democratic candidate in that caucus and do not understand why a Republican would want to be on the Democratic line as well except to avoid competition and an election, which is what happened last year and save a Democratic Primary this year, would have been tried again by Al Spain, the Republican Supervisor candidate.

EAST GREENBUSH TOWN COUNCILMAN PHIL MALONE ASKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT As Election Day quickly approaches I look back on all the Town board has accomplished in the last year and what I want to accomplish in the coming years.

After last year’s election victory, Sue Mangold and I took office within 8 days. Having already reviewed the 2011 tentative budget we were able to trim it from a 2.9% increase to 2.5% our first week in office. That same month we voted as a majority board to approve the 75 million dollar Fed-Ex project, bringing an end to the languishing project and allowing the town to realize millions of dollars in revenue and future job growth.

Not only has the town been attracting more business over the last year but, established employers have been expanding operations. With multi-million dollar projects ongoing at Regeneron off Columbia Turnpike and at NYISO off Third Ave extension the tax base is expanding. Such projects demonstrate that East Greenbush is business friendly and such investments in our community prove that.

We have begun to take a serious look at long term energy costs in town. Our current town board received a grant to upgrade our Department of Public Works electrical infrastructure by installing solar power at the town garage.

We have also approved a similar project at the waste water treatment plant. Such improvements allow our community to determine the price of electricity now and for decades to come and remove the uncertainty of the energy prices determined by foreign governments and local energy providers. As a council member I vow to keep energy costs down and make our energy infrastructure state of the art.

As I knock on our neighbors’ doors this fall I consistently hear residents ask about our parks. I have lived in the town for more than 30 years and the parks have never looked so good but, we can do so much more. Under the current administration we have established a town beautification fund to address such concerns. I want our residents to have a place they feel safe bringing their family and friends and a park system they are proud of.

We need to do more for our senior citizens. I will implement more programs to keep our growing senior population involved with the community and I seek their input as to how we can accomplish that.

We have such a diverse population in East Greenbush and the senior community is a large part of our town and we can learn so much from their experiences.

East Greenbush for far too long has gotten the short end of the stick in terms of sales tax revenue. Our town is the largest contributor of sales tax revenue in Rensselaer County. However, we do not receive a proportional amount of that revenue when the county redistributes it back to the towns in the county. My number one goal if reelected is to get that formula changed that determines what percentage of this sales tax revenue the town receives.

If I am fortunate enough to be reelected, my priorities over the next four years will be to improve our parks, increase senior programs and increase our share of sales tax revenue from the Rensselaer County. I believe all my goals are attainable and with your vote I know we can realize these goals together as a community.

A quilt featuring the names of 24 Capital Region service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 is on display at the New York State Military Museum.

The quilt features white stars on a blue background embroidered with the name of the service member and next to that is gold star featuring the name of the service members mother.

All of the volunteers that came to Restoration Day at Elmwood Cemetery were rewarded with a clear sunny day, an excellent teacher in Joe Ferannini and a sense of discovery as we cleaned headstones to uncover ornate carvings and a glimpse into the past. But, Linda Henchey discovered quite a bit more. Joe was telling a small group of his attempts to help Union Cemetery solve a mystery. For many years, Union had been storing a small headstone they knew did not belong in Union. Upon hearing the headstone detail, Linda led Joe to a large family plot with 2 central stones and several small ones. The family name, dates of birth and Linda’s recall of a large family of ten children lead to the near certainty that the stone belongs to her relatives in Elmwood. by Claire Everett If you read the Advertiser, you might have noticed a certain column missing, but not any more, The Chief column is back!

This space will be dedicated to covering all weekly Averill Park sporting events from now until the end of the year.

This week, many fall sports ventured into sectionals.

The girls Varsity soccer team battled in a total of three games in seven days. They started off the week with their Senior Night in the rain. After a difficult year, the girls earned their first win against Mohon 1-0. Congratulations to all the seniors who played an amazing game. The girls then played their first sectional game against Gloversville and, again, obliterated the competition 4-1. Goals were scored by Molly O’Bryan, Savannah Mason, Claire Everett and Morgan Lionarons. The Lady Warriors then went on to their second sectional game against Burnt Hills on Friday. They played a hard game, but fell short 0-4. Great job to the whole team, and good luck to all the graduating seniors.

The Boys varsity soccer team also had a busy week. The boys started out the with a win against Mohonason, beating them 5-4. Goal scorers were Nick Hess, Mac Hoyt, Noah Madden and Owen Nuss. But this was not the last time the boys would see Mohon. Again, the rivals met to play in AP Boy’s first sectional game. Unfortunately, this time the Warriors fell short 0-3. But congratulations to the boys for a great season.

The girls Volleyball team have had an amazing season, but unfortunately it came to an end this week. The girls started the week out by easily beating Mohonason on their Senior Night, but in their first Sectional game, the Lady’s lost to Catholic High in game three. Great effort by all the ladies and congratulations on a memorable season.

The Cross Country team traveled to the Rensselaer County meet on Friday, October 21st, where Andrew Tario broke the course record. This Saturday the team traveled to Saratoga’s SPAC to compete in the Suburban Council meet. The Warriors ran against the section’s best. Great job to the competitors who ran in both rain and snow!

As the cold weather rolls in, so do the winter sports. Tryouts for all winter sports are coming up, so keep an ear out! I will give you more details next week.

This game will take place under the lights on Thursday, November 3rd, at 6:30 at Averill Park High School. Come out and watch our senior girls take on our junior girls in the fashion of an American pasttime that we all love. Please help us collect more cans of food than we have ever collected before in our annual November food drive. Have a night of family fun for a great local cause and a great price…Be there!

Appreciative, giving, and kind are just a couple ways to describe this week’s scholar athlete; a senior at Averill Park High School with a 90 GPA. Paul LaMontagna is one of those kids who does everything to its fullest. He has been playing soccer since he was in first grade and is on the varsity team for his second year. You can find him playing outside midfielder and defender that is if you can catch this speedy player. Paul is a very dedicated player who began playing because his parents put him into several sports to find which he liked best. His favorite part about playing soccer is working as a team to become better as a whole rather than just as an individual. In his spare time, Paul enjoys volunteering in his community, participating in his church’s youth group and spending time with his friends and family.

Clarkson University is in Paul’s plans for his future, and last spring he received a scholarship to their school. He is looking to become some kind of Engineer but it is undecided which type.

LaMontagna’s favorite classes in school have been, in fact, his Engineering courses. This year he is taking Advanced Placement Government and Politics, Pre-Calculus, Tech Writing, Engineering Design and Development, and Principals of Engineering.

“I am proud to be a scholar athlete and would like to thank my school for offering me so many opportunities,” answered LaMontagna when asked about being a scholar athlete. He would also like to thank his parents for raising him right and instilling great characteristics in him; and his coach, Coach Organ, for teaching him team unity and discipline. His first year on the varsity team, Coach Organ awarded Paul with the Most Improved Award. Paul also attended Boy’s State and was nominated by teachers and administrators at Averill Park High School. The person that inspires Paul to find what he really enjoys and is interested in is his old friend, Quincy Denhom, who is a great artist. Quincy moved away a couple years ago but he taught Paul to figure out what he enjoyed and to improve on it.

Best of luck to Paul in his future and all of the other players on the boy’s soccer team at Averill Park.

2012 POESTENKILL YOUTH SKI CLUB Come join the Town of Poestenkill’s 2012 Ski Club at Jiminy Peak starting January 8th. The program is held on Sundays from 3:00 to 7:30. TROY ELKS 2011 HOOP SHOOT The 2011 Hoop Shoot will be held on November 19th at the CYO Center located at 237 4th Street in South Troy.

Registration starts at 8:15am and competition begins at 9:00am.

The competition is open to both boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13.

Contestant’s age groups will be determined by their ages as of April 1, 2012. Proof of age must be provided at the time of registration.

The winner in each age group will be eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot, after which there are competitions at the State, Regional and National level. The National Finals are held in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the top six finalists’ will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS BENEFIT RIDE On Sunday, November 6th, the Brunswick Harley Owners Group (HOG) will hold its annual Toys for Tots Benefit Ride to raise funds and gather toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program.

Registration begins at 11 AM at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Rd., Troy, NY. A guided parade of bikes, with police escort will take place at Noon. The parade will travel down routes 7 and 142, through Lansingburgh, Waterford, Crescent, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and end up at the Marine Recruiting Station at the Schenectady County Airport. Last year, excellent weather and an overwhelming biker response, resulted in over 400 bikes participating in the event. Last year’s parade was over 3 miles long. In addition to donating a bundle of toys, the event raised over $4,500 for this program. The price of admission to this event is one unwrapped new toy or $10 per person. Toys for older children are particularly needed. Complimentary coffee and donuts and a post ride gathering provided by LT’s Grill, Nott St., Niskayuna. ATTENTION ALL AVERILL PARK 1st – 8th GRADERS! Averill Park Youth Basketball Hoop Camp starts Saturday, November 5th. There is still time to register. This is a fun and educational 13 week non-competitive basketball program that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of basketball. The program runs every Saturday for 90 minutes per session in one of the Algonquin Middle School gyms. The cost of the program is still just $60 per child with a max of $90 per family. Every participant gets an APYB T-shirt and free pizza party at the end of the season. 1st and 2nd grade boys and girls get a bonus free basketball to keep and use!

The program is open to all students in the Averill Park school district, including Gardner-Dickinson.

SPORTS NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE On Saturday, December 3, 2011, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

The course will be held at the Grafton VFW Hall on South Road (581 County Route 85), Grafton, from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, trailer safety, etc.

RENSSELAER ELK’S HOOP SHOOT TOURNAMENT On Saturday, November 5th, Rensselaer Elk’s Lodge 2073 will be holding their local hoop shoot tournament. The tournament will be held at Genet Elementary School at 9:30AM. This tournament is for boys and girls ages 813 years old, using April 1, 2012 for the age cut off. For example, if you are 7 years old and will be 8 years old by March 31, 2012 you will be able to shoot in the tournament. If you are 13 years old and will be 14 years old

by March 31, 2012, then you cannot shoot in the tournament.

The age groups are 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13, in both the boys and girls group. You do not have to be related to an Elk to shoot in this tournament. It is open to all boys and girls who are in the age groups shown above.

For those who have never shot in the tournament, I would like to let you know, that this is not a basketball game, it is shooting from the foul line. The 8-9 year olds shoot from 4 feet in front of the foul line. All the others shoot from the foul line. First you take 10 shots, and then 15 shots, for a total of 25 shots. The winners in each age group will go on to represent Rensselaer Elks in the district tournament, which will be held at a later date, competing against the winners of the other lodge in our district. There are 4 other tournaments after the district tournament that you have a chance to advance to. They are, the east regional, the state, the tri-state, and finally, the National Hoop Shoot Tournament, where you will compete against the winners from all over the country. The winners of the National Tournament will get their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

You can see what you have a chance of doing. But first, you have to participate in our local tournament and win. You do not have to be a basketball player to participate in the hoop shoot tournament. You just have to be the right age and want to have fun.

If at all possible, please bring a copy of your birth certificate with you. If you can’t, that’s okay, but I will need a copy of these who win and go onto the district tournament. Hope to see you on November 5th! ~Lorraine Cancilla, Rensselaer Elk’s Hoop Shoot chairperson

MIRACLE LEAGUE HONORED

Two elected Members of State Government were in attendance at the October meeting of the East Greenbush Town Board.

Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari, and Senator Roy McDonald each presented proclamations to representatives of the Town’s Miracle League Program. Miracle League President Burke Adams, a moving force behind the development of the widely acclaimed program and his son Dan, a Board Member, accepted the honors on behalf of the Miracle League.

The event gave recognition to recent passage of legislation which provided authorization for the Town to finalize the transfer of land within the Town Park to the Miracle League. Some years ago a grassroots effort brought attention to the concept of providing an opportunity for handicapped athletes to participate in organized team sports. Through much volunteer effort and dedication, the idea grew, gained support, and blossomed into the impressive facility that was built in East Greenbush. The Miracle League Field in the Town Park is designed with a special surface, and adaptable layout for multiple sports including Baseball, Football, Soccer, Basketball, and Track & Field in a stadium atmosphere.

The East Greenbush Miracle League Program has garnered widespread acclaim, and draws participants from throughout the surrounding region. Television coverage on ESPN and NFL broadcasts, which featured the state of the art facility, and the impressive organization that built it has brought national exposure to our area.

Both Assemblyman Canestrari, and Senator MacDonald praised the program as a marvelous example of the good work that can be accomplished through cooperative efforts of government and community. The East Greenbush Miracle League was termed a beacon to be followed in other communities, and the speakers noted that they would be encouraging such positive ventures for other municipalities in their districts.

HOOP-A-THON AT TROY HIGH SCHOOL We heard that you are the best basketball shooter in the area. Come show us your stuff and win cash prizes in all age categories. WALKING TRACK NEEDED IN EAST GREENBUSH Letter to the Editor: As we know, obesity is a major problem in this country, stemming from poor nutrition, and leading to diabetes, heart disease, and many other illnesses.

This spring I began a diet and walking program to attack my obesity, which was impacting my health in many ways. So far, I have lost over 40 pounds. The largest part of my success was the fact that the Town of East Greenbush has a wonderful park with many hiking trails. Every morning I was able to enjoy the park and make good progress on my weight loss.

However, as we know, Hurricane Irene had many unfortunate consequences. A little known fact is that a small bug pesky problem was also caused by Irene - huge amounts of mosquitoes. I was forced indoors. (Also, winter approaches.)

Upon checking with my exercise trainer, I was advised that Columbia High School had an indoor walking track for the residents; however it usually operated only 3 days a week during supper time. This school year, it will not be available.

The only other options include the YMCA in East Greenbush (I cannot afford a membership, and my insurance doesn’t cover it), or driving all the way to Crossgates Mall daily.

In a prosperous suburb like East Greenbush, with very high taxes on the residents, it seems that the town leaders could provide such a facility. There are many empty buildings along RT’s 9 & 20 - the town could purchase one, and it would not take much renovation or decoration to make it a walking track.

East Greenbush needs to keep the heath and well-being of its residents in mind. Hopefully, other residents have the same concerns as mine. ~Margaret M. Sunday, November 13th, at 2PM at the East Greenbush Library: Speaker Ernie Mann will speak on the “Railroads in the City of Rensselaer—through the era of the villages to the 1840’s with the Troy and Greenbush Railroads through to the present with CSX and Amtrak.” The Rensselaer Train Station is the 9th busiest passenger station in the country with 24 trains daily carrying over 775,000 passengers yearly. Ernie Mann’s enthusiasm for the railroad began as a young boy growing up in Rensselaer. His father and grandfather worked on the railroad for 55 and 43 years respectively, and Ernie put himself through college working on the Penn Central Railroad.

A life- long resident of Rensselaer and retired Rensselaer school teacher. Ernie also was the city’s fire chief for many years. His recent book about City of Rensselaer railroads published by Arcadia books will be available for purchase and signing at the East Greenbush Library.

ALL POLITICS ARE LOCALESPECIALLY IN SCHODACK Last week, Christopher Lucarelli again attempted to divert your attention from serious local issues, arising from singleparty rule that’s long plagued Schodack. He’s trying to hold local Democrats responsible for the national mess we’re in: ridiculous.

It’s a default position he hopes will make you forget that our high taxes, undiminished spending, and closed government are the direct result of one clique of Republicans running the show, unchallenged, since the beginning of the Secor administration.

They say they have held down the tax rate, but don’t mention that spending has gone unchecked, especially given the hard times the rest of us are going through.

In his letter, Mr. Lucarelli, husband of Council-woman Debra Young, didn’t deny that Town Board decisions are made behind closed doors with little, if any, discussion in public meetings.

He didn’t deny the practice of appointing cronies and relatives to paid positions and jobs, out of reach for other qualified, but unconnected, residents.

He offered no explanation for why Republican candidates declined to participate in the traditional Meet the Candidates Night, sponsored by the MHHS Participation in Government class, Schodack Planning and Development Association, to have been moderated by the League of Women Voters. This event has always been well attended and the kids were counting on it to fulfill their PIG requirements. What were incumbents afraid we’d ask them?

While Mr. Lucarelli heaps praise on the current Board for Moody’s analysis of town finances, I care less about Moody’s take on things here than I do about the growing number of “For Sale” signs I see everywhere. Many of us are concerned about being able to stay in our homes, so great is the tax burden now. And if you do decide to move, good luck selling your house, when one look at our tax bills sends most buyers a’ running.

Re-assessments were done at the height of the housing bubble and haven’t been re-adjusted to reflect current home values. Wouldn’t the self-described incumbent “good government team” want to help struggling residents by getting assessments back in line with housing market reality?

Perhaps Mr. Lucarelli, Schodack Republican Club president, can explain why so many signs for Democratic candidates are routinely stolen, knocked down and destroyed every election cycle, in high-school style acts of vandalism. We leave theirs alone because that’s the honorable way to behave.

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature will hold several meetings regarding the upcoming 2012 county budget, and residents will also have opportunities to comment on the spending plan and changes to the proposal.

The meetings begin in early November and continue for one month until legislators consider the budget in early to midDecember. The meetings follow a schedule set forth in the county charter and the rules of the Legislature.

The proposed 2012 county budget complies with the state tax cap. The budget includes a 2 percent increase and protects mainstream county services. Legislators have proposed to work in a bi-partisan fashion with the County Executive to reduce the proposed increase and continue to advocate for needed and promised relief from state and federal mandates.

All meetings related to the 2012 county budget will be held in Chambers of the County Legislature, located on the third floor of the County Office Building, 1600 7th Avenue, downtown Troy. The schedule for meetings related to the 2011 county budget: • Public Hearing to Review Tentative 2012 Budget - Thursday, November 10 at 5:30 p.m.

• Public Hearing to review legislative changes to budget – Monday, November 28 at 5:30 p.m.

HIGHWAY POLITICS...

NORTH GREENBUSH STYLE For years C.B. (Charles) Smith and Dan Ashley before him have tried to use the N.G. highway department to take control of our Town. This election is no exception.

While most people might agree that Mark Premo and staff do a good job for our Town, his backing of C.B. (Charles) Smith by spreading misinformation isn’t right and ultimately not a wise decision for our Town.

Residents should ask themselves, why is the N.G. highway department the only town highway employees in all of Rensselaer County to be controlled by politics? And why if Mr. Premo is running unopposed is he letting C.B.Smith spread lies under his name? Smith’s misuse of the highway department this election seems worse than usual, probably because he is running himself.

Here are a few facts that all residents should consider: • In several articles including his recent campaign announcement (printed on 10/23/11 in the Troy Record) Mr. Premo informed the public that “more than $370,000 in set aside highway funds was in his budget at the beginning of last year”. Why would he say that when at a Town Board meeting on 10/13/11 the Town Comptroller informed him that the former comptroller reported his 2010 opening year balance was $279,408 and due to bookkeeping errors he found his true opening 2010 balance was $141,408. Mr. Premo is well aware of the correct numbers yet insists on reporting information that is misleading to the public.

• Mr. Premo and Smith in several publications talk about “the highway pilot funds”. Rest assured that pilot money belongs to no one but the people of North Greenbush. It is the responsibility of the Town Board to administer those funds in the best interest of you, the people. Working off the same financial misinformation ($370,000 fund balance) that our highway superintendent was, we decided to direct those funds to the general fund so as not to raise your taxes.

• The Town Board will continue to provide sufficient funding for the Highway Department despite the fact that the Highway Superintendent did not attend the Town’s independent Finance Committee meeting to review his 2012 budget.

• The New York State Comptroller’s office conducted a general audit of our books this year and found no such mishandling of funds. In addition the Town Board hired an independent auditor to verify that all funds have been managed correctly.

Finally, as we were erasing the $429,000 debt we inherited from the previous administration without raising your property or highway taxes, we have adequately funded the Highway Department to ensure the Highway Department carried out its mission. The clear misrepresentation of the facts by C.B. Smith and Mark Premo has compelled us to respond so that the taxpayers of North Greenbush are provided with accurate and documented information.

2011 FESTIVAL OF MUSIC & CHOCOLATE Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) announces the annual Festival of Music & Chocolate to be held on Sunday, November 6th, from 3-5pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 59 Third Street in Troy. The festival features a variety of congregations showcasing their musical and confectionary talents. Tickets for all the chocolate (and non-chocolate) desserts you care to sample will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. A free will offering will be received during the concert.

EAST GREENBUSH OFFICIALS MCCABE AND MURPHY FAIL AT PUBLIC SERVICE In response to the letter Toni Murphy had in The Advertiser last week, I cannot withhold my disappointment and disgust at her hypocrisy. Ms. Murphy tries to paint a picture that is sweet and innocent and yet she demonstrated the exact opposite at the Town Board meeting on Oct. 19th. While a senior citizen was trying to explain his disapproval of the way he was treated at the Tax Receiver’s office and the Tax Assessors office, Ms. Murphy was very vocal and rude in telling the elderly man to “SIT DOWN!”. HOW DARE SHE, or any public figure including Rick McCabe (who did the same thing to another speaker), try to silence people who are only looking for this administration to do the job they were elected and hired to do. When I found out that both Rick McCabe and Toni Murphy took over $20,000 that was not legally approved by the board in order to increase their personal pensions, I was sick to the point that I lost all faith in these elected officials.

It is unfair to present one face to the public in order to get elected and another once you have the job. Both Toni Murphy and Rick McCabe have forgotten that public service means serving the public whether they are happy with you or not.

The public is not happy, it is time to elect new people who understand what public service is all about!

EAST GREENBUSH MOVING FORWARD Letter to the Editor: Thanks should be extended to a former official in the State Comptroller’s Office who brought to light some of the positive achievements made by the town board, now seated in East Greenbush. In a recent submission to the Advertiser, this Audit Director focused on a few of the challenges inherited from the previous regime. These items were lifted from an audit his Department had completed two years ago when East Greenbush was run by a Republican Controlled Board.

What a great opportunity this presents for examining all of the changes made over the past two years that remediated those findings. First, the residents elected Sue Mangold and Phil Malone to serve on the Board to help address those challenges. During their one year tenure, new and improved internal controls were implemented that segregate duties in fiscal operations regarding payroll, purchasing, disbursements, and general ledger procedures. Any lack of clarity in budgeting related to staff compensation was eradicated. The current town budget has been administered with continual oversight by a Citizen’s Fiscal Advisory Committee, working closely with the Comptroller and department heads. This level of scrutiny and involvement has resulted in a positive impact, as a substantial surplus is projected for the end of this budget cycle. As a result of the town’s revised practices, payroll disbursements are now subjected to a comparative review against budgeted salary allocations on a continuous basis.

With all of the improvements to fiscal responsibility, one should take a moment to reflect on all that the Democratic majority has restored to the town board over the last year.

Please consider the ramifications of this turnaround and the positive plans being generated, coupled with new developments being considered as we move ahead.

Consider the list of recent complaints and vague “pie in the sky” promises offered by people who have not been involved in their community. HOPE 7 COMMUNITY CENTER THANKS HANNAFORD FOR FOOD DONATION

Thank you to the Hannaford in Wynantskill for donating 1,000 pounds of food to the Hope 7 Community Center Food Pantry earlier this month. The Hope 7 Food Pantry is currently serving over 100 families each month. This past September, Hope 7 served 112 households equaling to be almost 300 individuals with a supply of healthy food, not to mention fresh produce and bread. Thank you to the Wynantskill Hannaford for their generous support! The Hope 7 Food Pantry is open to area residents Monday through Friday 9:30 to 11:45am and the last Saturday of each month 9:30 to 11:45 am.

DFD ALARM TOTAL REACHES 340 With 43 emergency responses during September, volunteers of the DeFreestville Fire Department raised their total of alarms for the first nine months of 2011 to 340 according to the monthly fire report of Fire Chief Raymond Swart. The Chief said DFD fire fighters spent 202 fire fighter hours at alarms in September, for a total of more than 2,388 hours at emergencies so far this year.

Chief Swart said the September alarms included 17 false alarms with good intent, eight rescue or motor vehicle accident calls, four service calls, four unintentional false alarms, three hazardous condition responses, three emergency medical service calls in cooperation with the North Greenbush Ambulance Association, three alarm system malfunctions, and one malicious false alarm.

The DeFreestville Fire Department in North Greenbush Fire District # 1 is a volunteer organization established in 1945 that provides emergency services 24 hours a day. The fire department always needs and welcomes new members and community support. DFD’s non-emergency number is 286-3612. All emergencies in Rensselaer County should be reported by dialing 911. THE ICE HARVESTER OF BURDEN LAKE This article is from an interview conducted by Diane DeBlois and Rebecca Harrison with William Mixter Green, Junior. (Bill) The Greens Farm on Burden Lake Road near Gundrum Road had a spring-fed pond, and there they built an ice house to store the product of the winter freezes – on the pond first and then off the lake. Bill liked ice harvesting the best of the farming chores. For optimum production, the ice had to be 12 inches thick. Bill and his father (or later a neighbor) would score off 32 inch by 22 inch by 12 inch thick blocks that would weigh 300 pounds and then they would subdivide into 6 fifty pound blocks - just the right size for a commercial icebox.

They would harvest in a grid that they kept surrounded by an avenue of open water so they could float the blocks to shore.

Harvesting the pond ice meant skidding the blocks down to the ice house where they could be stacked to within 6 inches of the siding and then that space would be filled in with sawdust and straw spread over the whole pile.

All dairy farmers had an ice house to keep their milk cool and paid 5 cents a cake for lake ice. An opportunity for more profit was offered by the explosion of cottage building after World War I – vacationers paid 15-25 cents for 50 pounds. Ice blocks that melted into funnels beneath icebox food safes into holes bored into cottage floors. The Greens peddled ice to the summer residents of the second and third Burden Lakes - first by wagon and then by truck. Many summer businesses were open along Burden Lake Road: Maple Grove Inn, Hayner’s ice cream store, Calkins Hotel, George Breigel’s Fisherman’s Rest, which when enlarged became Burden Lake Casino. Bill remembers one morning government Revenuers had raided the Casino the night before and smashed the kegs, so his first job was cleaning the mess of spoiled beer.

Lani has been a tremendous asset to the Town through her work on the Planning Board. The Planning Board is an allvolunteer, highly functioning, and very busy sector of the Town’s government. Lani attends each meeting educated in both the individual agenda items and the overall Town laws and regulations and provides extremely valuable insight. Each member adds value to the meetings and proceedings in their own way, and Lani’s best attributes are her great attention to detail, her proficiency at knowing and communicating the regulations to the applicants, and her outstanding ability to review and make very clear and unbiased recommendations on all applications. Most of the subdivision applications in Nassau have been existing residents giving parcels of their land to their children, so that family can stay in the town. Lani has been extremely supportive of this effort to retain Nassau’s heritage and character, and it’s an example of her family-oriented values.

Antonette ( Toni) Murphy, East Greenbush Tax Receiver, is coordinating arrangements for a series of informational seminars to help residents understand some of the technicalities, and opportunities encountered in dealing with their Town Tax payments. “Interacting with residents at my window, I’m often asked questions that require me to refer people to the Assessor and other Town Offices,” Mrs. Murphy noted. “Many times these questions come from our seniors.” Last year the Assessor’s Office instituted some informational sessions for residents at the Town Library.

Toni sees an opportunity to build on this concept by expanding the topics covered, and broadening the schedule to reach more people. “I discussed this with Brad Canning, the Assessor, and with my Liaison on the Town Board, Ginny O’Brien. Ginny is also Liaison to the Community and Recreational Services Dept., and she agreed with the idea of joining the resources of several offices in this outreach effort.”

Mrs. Murphy is approaching her counterparts in Town Hall to develop a format for residents to get information and clarify their understanding on topics such as tax exemption programs for Veterans, and Seniors, and optional payment methods available to residents. “Many people have questions about how to qualify, and when to file for exemptions, and I think it is important for people to understand that some of the alternate tax payment programs involve processing fees, before they make a decision to utilize them,” Toni said. “As we discuss this further, more topics may come to light, and we hope to develop a very helpful curriculum for the seminars.”

Current plans are aimed at getting these seminars scheduled in a time frame to clarify important information and requirements for people before the next application periods open up. Additional announcements on the Taxpayer Seminars will be posted as the plans and schedules are finalized.
