GRADESS RETURNS TO APHS FOR A ONE-TIME, FREE CONCERT Sam Gradess, a 2007 graduate of Averill Park High School, will be returning to APHS to sing with his select choir, the Laurentian Singers, on Saturday, March 5th, at 3PM in the auditorium. The Laurentian Singers are celebrating their 65th anniversary this year, and will be performing their pre-tour concert at the high school of the group’s current president (Gradess). The choir will be touring Montreal, Paris, and the Normandy region of France. The repertoire consists of 16th Century chansons, as well as 20th Century whimsical pieces by the famed composer Maurice Ravel. There will also be spiritual pieces, gospel pieces, and pop songs by The Beatles and K’Naan. The concert is free to the public and has something for everybody! MAYOR BOB SEVERANCE SEEKS TO CONTINUE SERVING NASSAU Mayor Robert J. Severance has been proud to serve as mayor of the Village of Nassau, and working to protect quality of life and the small-town feel of the community. After being urged by many village residents, Mayor Severance will seek reelection in the March 15 village elections. Bob has served as mayor since 1989 and with the help of dedicated Village Trustees has completed many projects to make the village a better place. These projects include updating the village water system, replacement of a seventy-one year-old water tank, computerization of village offices and the start of a recycling program. The recycling program has meant significant savings for the village and was ranked number one in the Eastern Rensselaer County Solid Waste Authority for the amount of waste decreased and increase in recycling. For years the community has enjoyed events at the Village Commons. Bob led volunteers in building the gazebo and shed at the Commons at no cost to taxpayers, and has used his carpentry and electrical expertise on many village projects, also saving the village money. A member of the Village Beautification Committee, Bob also assisted local Girl Scouts in constructing a playground in Ben Stanley Park. While working to protect the quality of life in Nassau, Bob has ensured needed services are provided and has also kept the tax rate stable. Bob is past Fire Commissioner for Nassau Fire District No. 1, past president of the Nassau Baseball Association and member of the Rensselaer Elks. Bob served in the US Navy for two years aboard the destroyer USS Brownson DD868 and was in the Naval Reserves for three years. Bob has worked at Benet Laboratories at the Watervliet Arsenal as an electronics technician for nearly thirty years, and graduated from Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in Industrial Electronics. He and his wife Joyce have proudly called the Village of Nassau home for 35 years, raising their children, Robert Jr. (BJ), Christopher and Jennifer in the safe community environment. Bob also enjoys spending time with his nineteen-month old granddaughter Ava and his two-month old grandson Braden.

COMMUNITY SENIOR NEWS Seniors in the entire Southern Rensselaer County area are invited to utilize the Edward C. Swartz Senior Center of Rensselaer County, located at 1800 East Schodack Road in Castleton NY. We are located next-door to the old Schodack Town Hall at the end of the large CDTA Bus parking lot. Seniors (age 60 & up) are welcome to visit the local center to enjoy a hot meal each weekday at noon and participate in any of the programs available here at the senior center. The daily nutritional meals are served with beverages and dessert. Each day activities are scheduled for seniors to enjoy. On Monday mornings, we have a sewing group that makes pillows for heart and kidney patients at Albany Medical Center and Monday afternoons the “Over the Hill Gang”, our chorus group, rehearses music that they perform at senior centers and residential senior homes throughout the capital district area. This group, directed by Kathy Lubbers, is always happy to welcome new singers. On Tuesday mornings, knitters and crotchetiers get together to create lap robes, hats, mittens, and slippers for many organizations in area communities. There is always a need for these items, if this interests you, please come and join our group. Wednesday mornings we offer a Tai Chi class and following the noon meal, Line dancing is a lively group that practice routines to perform at several locations in the area. Thursday afternoons an exercise class designed just for seniors is held and Friday afternoons schedule includes darts. Numerous other monthly programs are offered: Attorney Services, Blood Pressure Screening, Free Hearing Clinic, Good Food Ideas and Bingo. We have “special programs”: Defensive Driving classes, general senior information, as well as many other seminars covering senior issues such as Medicare workshops are offered throughout the year. On specific days, van transportation is provided for seniors who don’t have access to a vehicle. The New Year brought many blustery winter days, but with Rensselaer County’s operation of this senior center; we are here to welcome you for a hot meal, good friendship and the many programs that are offered. TEXAS HOLD’EM IN STEPHENTOWN The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, March 19th, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5PM and close at 6PM. Play begins at 6:15 sharp. A Free Buffet will be served at the first break. SPAIN FAILS TO APPEAL AND DELAYS RESTITUTION Letter to the Editor: North Greenbush Democrats are calling on former Chairman Jeff Spain, to make full restitution to the Democratic Committee of the more than $3,000 he owes pursuant to the order of a Judge. Mr. Spain was provided free attorneys by the GOP to defend the case and then engaged in a bogus appeal to delay justice, stated Chairman Dan Ashley. At least one of these attorneys was placed on the town payroll with the support of Al Spain, his brother, who is a Councilman allied with the Republican Majority on the Town Board. An ethics complaint filed against Councilman Spain seeking a determination on the appointment as a quid pro quo for the free legal services has been utterly ignored by a Town Board appointed Ethics Board which has never met, not once during its 13 months of existence. This is how Al Spain and his GOP ally Lou Desso run the town, stated Ashley. Thankfully, they do not control the Courts. The Decision and Order of a trial judge found that Spain had illegally disbursed more than $3,000 in party funds after he lost control of the Democratic Committee in September 2008. On September 10th, one day after the Primary election, a majority of the Committee notified Spain of his responsibility to protect party funds. Spain ignored this warning, emptied the checking account leaving .45 cents to run town elections. In September 2010, Spain’s lawyers obtained a stay of the order so they could appeal the decision. Instead they did nothing and time has run out resulting in the lifting of the stay issued by the court. Since his refusal to obey the court order, Jeff Spain has been further enriched with a paid town appointment to the Planning Board, thanks to the GOP led Board majority. Despite his new second income, not a penny has been returned to this Committee. Mr. Spain should reimburse the Democratic Committee and Councilman Spain should explain why he supported a town job for his brother’s attorney. LORI CLARK READY TO CONTINUE SERVING NASSAU ON VILLAGE BOARD Lori Clark has served as trustee of the Village of Nassau during the past four years, and has worked to protect the health, safety and quality of life of village residents. She will be seeking re-election during village elections on March 15 to allow her to continue serving on the Village Board and to continue her work for the community. Lori was first elected to the Village Board in 2007 and as a board member, was chosen to supervise the village’s recycling program. During Lori’s time supervising the recycling program, the recycling rate has been increased by 25.2 percent and the amount of waste disposed by the village reduced by 20 percent. The improved recycling rate and reduction in waste collected by the village during Lori’s supervision of the recycling program benefit taxpayers by helping the village keep costs for garbage tipping fees in check. Lori earned an associate’s degree in Business from Hudson Valley Community College and has put education to work in budgeting and keeping taxes stable while providing needed services. Along with her work on recycling and budgeting, Lori also serves as a member of the Nassau Beautification Committee, and was chairperson of the popular Nassaufest for several years. Prior to her service on the Village Board, Lori worked as secretary to the Planning and Zoning Board for both the town and village of Nassau. Lori now works for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) as an Associate Project Manager. In her free time, Lori enjoys gardening and outdoor activities. Lori Clark, a lifelong resident of the Village of Nassau, is the daughter of Margaret Van Deusen and the late Arthur Van Deusen. She lives on Westbrook Drive with her son Nicholas Clark, Jr.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER REENLISTMENTS Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard. Sergeant Jason Taluto from Nassau, has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 42d Special Troops Battalion. Master Sergeant Mark Tremblay from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Joint Force Headquarters. Sergeant Christopher O’Rourke from Troy, has reenlisted to continue service with the Joint Force Headquarters. “Over the past 3 years, the New York Army National Guard has come from far below authorized strength to 100 percent strength,” Murphy said in remarks to the force. “Our priority is to provide ready forces for both state and federal missions and readiness starts with maintaining our strength.” “We have more than 16,000 men and women in the Army and Air National Guard with each individual member having an important role.”

MAPLE HILL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH In an effort to recognize outstanding achievements of our students, Maple Hill High School presents each month a Student of the Month Award. Students may be nominated for this award by any staff member, a representative of a community organization, a parent or another student. Students may be nominated for a single outstanding achievement, for service to the school or community or for significant improvement in school. Each month one student in each grade, 9-12, is selected for this award by a faculty committee after a review of all nominations. For the month of February, 2011, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Andy Jenkins; Sophomore – Sierra Pizzola; Junior – Erin Mosher; Senior – Danielle Biernik Andrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Jenkins, is nominated for being a pleasure to have in class and for being extremely successful academically as well as socially. He has a great sense of humor and is helpful to others. In addition to being the Freshman Class President, Andy participates in Environmental Club and plays soccer, basketball, and runs track. Andy has aspirations of being an architect. Sierra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Pizzola, is nominated for being a well-rounded, conscientious student and a charming young woman. When she is not on the softball field, she can be found playing her instrument in the band or working on a project for Girl Scouts. She is currently working on the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Sierra wants to go to college after high school, possibly Syracuse University. Erin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Mosher, is nominated for being an outstanding student, kind, respectful, considerate of others, and hard working. Erin plays soccer, basketball, and runs track. She was named 2nd Team Patroon Conference All-Star in soccer. Erin plans to go to college for something in the Sciences. TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE VILLAGE OF NASSAU I’ve been a proud resident of the Village of Nassau since 1987 and have moved here for many reasons, not the least of which was my belief that this would be an ideal place to raise my family. I certainly haven’t been disappointed and my family and I have enjoyed the sense of community the village provides to all of its citizens. Several years ago I decided to take an active role in public service to the village and have served on the board for two terms as a village trustee over seeing the Code Enforcement and Animal Control Officers and participating on the ERCSWMA board. I’ve found these positions to be both challenging and rewarding while also giving me the chance to give back to my fellow village residents and represent their needs and concerns. I have now decided to seek election as the Village Mayor in order to continue my efforts to improve the lives of my friends, neighbors and all village residents and businesses. My platform will be a stark departure from that of most politicians in that my efforts may result in the abolishment of my position. If elected, I intend to investigate the dissolution of the village government and the departments that provide us with services in favor of consolidation with the Town of Nassau and perhaps where more appropriate with Rensselaer County and the State of New York. I’m sure there will be some residents deeply concerned with this approach and how it will affect the delivery of services and on our taxes. But make no mistake, if our level of services will be compromised or if tax levels would increase, I will not support moving forward. In addition, whether the information obtained during this study is favorable for consolidation or unfavorable it will be made available for public review prior to any decision. ~Charles H. Our February Town Board meeting began by honoring the service of Jim Moore, the Town Director of Planning. Jim had served our community in this capacity since 2004; his expertise and knowledge will be sorely missed. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill this position. Resumes can be sent to the Town Hall. Town water rates have not been increased in 3 years while the costs of operation and maintenance have steadily increased. Due to increases in the purchase price of water from the City of Troy, the Town has increased water rates. However, rates for minimum consumption will remain the same. This resolution passed the town board with a unanimous 5-0 vote. In response to recent water-quality concerns, we authorized a survey for the potential merger of the Hampton Manor Water District with the General Water District. This survey will be mailed to Hampton Manor residents with their July bills. Phil and Sue attended the Associations of Towns meeting in NYC this past week. They appreciated the opportunity to attend the many seminars focusing on the issues facing all Towns in the State. Two of the topics that we will be addressing in the short-term are Multiyear Financial Planning and Storm Water Management. The Citizens Financial Advisory Board for the Town has already expressed an interest in helping to produce multi-year budgets. Building Inspector, Joe Cherubino, also in attendance at these meetings, is focusing on bringing the Town into compliance with the State mandates to keep our water and sewers free of dangerous chemicals. Appliance Amnesty Week will take place the last week of March. Starting Monday, March 28th, through Friday, April 1st, appliances can be picked up with an appointment by calling the Town DPW at 477-6103. The next scheduled Town Board Meeting is Wednesday, March 16th, at 7pm.
SL UNION CEMETERY MEETING OF LOT OWNERS The Annual Meeting of the Lot Owners of the Sand Lake Union Cemetery will be held in the Lounge of the Church of the Covenant, on Thursday, March 10th, beginning at 7PM. It is the day on which we commemorate the special revelation of Jesus’ divinity to the three disciples; it was God’s divine affirmation of everything Jesus had done and was about to do. Worship at the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will be centered around Jesus’ transfiguration, the transformation of his friends and how God changes us as we journey with him. In the sermon, based on Matthew 17:1-9, titled, “Changed by God,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will focus on how hearing Jesus’ message can lead us to become changed. FORMER COMPTROLLER REACTS TO CHARGES Letter to the Editor: North Greenbush residents are witnessing Lou Desso’s efforts to repair damage done to their competence by attacking my reputation and open the door to hire one of their political cronies as Town Comptroller. Evidence a report from a consultant leaked to a newspaper by Mr. Desso, which inaccurately accused me of creating an “unauthorized bank account”. No one ever consulted or questioned me on the report’s findings. The failure of the Board and the firm they retained to obtain my input is inexcusable and evidence of a taxpayer funded political hit. Their claim of an “Unauthorized Bank Account” is untrue and outrageous. The Comptroller was never restricted by the Board in determining which bank or account or type to use. The account was fully authorized by the comptroller and opened in the name of the Town of North Greenbush, not Mike Strenka. Every penny is secure. Contrary to the innuendo, the board approved bank is right here on Main Avenue and not some off shore bank in the Cayman Islands! As a County Legislator, Mr. Desso approves depositories for the county. Does he know of every account the county’s fiscal officers use and does he approve each one? Of course not; the finding is both wrong and incorrect as a matter of law and practice. Finally, I must disclose that any reports not finalized by my office were slowed at the direct demand of Councilman Desso who was paranoid that critics would utilize them to demonstrate the failure of the majority to fully implement budgetary recommendations. Mr. Desso was obsessed by the deficit, which he continued to contribute to with unnecessary spending, while wanting to insist there was “no deficit”, as he stated many times at meetings. Desso’s interference with the Comptroller’s Office severely hampered our ability to execute our fiduciary responsibilities in a timely fashion. The East Greenbush Central School District’s Class of ’61 is now in the process of planning its 50th Class Reunion. The events will be held on the weekend of September 16 and 17, 2011. The planned activities include an informal event at the Elks Club (located on Route 4 in East Greenbush) on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Reunion Committee has planned a continental breakfast at the Genet Elementary School (the “old” Columbia High School) followed by a tour of the building. Later in the afternoon, there will be a tree planting ceremony at Columbia High School (located on Luther Road in East Greenbush) in memory of deceased classmates. There will also be a dinner Saturday evening at Moscatiello’s (located on Route 4 in North Greenbush). Class of ’61 graduates, spouses, significant others, children, and grandchildren are all welcomed to each of the scheduled events. Sunday, March 6th, the Trinity Lutheran Church of West Sand Lake will be celebrating its 235th anniversary. We will begin with worship at 11 am with Pastor Jim Hulihan. Following the service, we will host a reception with displays from our past including a short history program. We are inviting the entire community to come and share their memories of our church, as well as learn more about the oldest church in the Town of Sand Lake. We can trace our history from l776 when we formed a local church from the Gilead Lutheran Church in Brunswick. Records of our church dating back into the l800’s will be on display. The purpose of this Sunday is not only to share stories from our past, but also have you share the stories you have or have heard. All are welcome. We have to thank Gretchen Oliver Romanelli of Trinity for all her hard work in getting this “Homecoming Sunday” together. The cheerleaders have one more competition on 3/5 at the nearby Columbia High School. They are all very excited to be in the last competition of the season for Suburban Council. When APHS senior Eileen Lantry talks about who has inspired her to be the way she is, she gives all the credit to her family. “They’ve been my inspiration for everything I have accomplished so far.” Eileen has been riding horses for 10 years. “I love the feeling of accomplishment when you and your horse do something right together, especially when that horse is young and just learning.” When she was young, Lantry was taught how to ride by Marj Ritzer. Eileen first started in summer camp, and one day, her mom surprised her with riding lessons. Eileen’s horse’s name is Perfect Pic. Along with riding horses, Lantry helps out at the barn she rides at. Eileen plans on continuing her riding career in college. Next year she will be attending either UVM or Becker College. Both colleges have riding teams which Lantry will be trying out for. In college, Eileen will be studying Animal Science and hopes to find a career in the veterinary field. Eileen’s senior year courses consist of Pre Calculus, Physics, French 5, English, Economics, and Participation in Government. Throughout her high school career, Eileen has managed to maintain an 88 grade point average. Good Luck to Eileen as her senior year comes to a close.

AVERILL PARK ROAD RUNNERS YOUTH CLUB IS NOW TAKING REGISTRATIONS The Averill Park Road Runners Youth Club is now taking registrations for the 2011 Track & Field Season. The club is open to anyone ages 7-14 who likes to run, jump, throw and most of all, have FUN! (You do not have to be a resident of the Averill Park School District.) Kids can choose from many events including sprints, distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, turbo javelin and discus. Practices will be held Monday & Thursday evenings at the Averill Park High School, with several meets throughout the season. The season will run from April 25th through June and finish with the Junior Olympics. Registration is now available on our website at www.aproadrunners.com. The registration fee is only $40, plus uniform if needed. A $15.00 late fee will be added on April 1st. There is a $10 sibling discount. MARK HERRINGTON NAMED ALL-AMERICAN It wasn’t too long ago when Mark Herrington was playing football for the East Greenbush Pop Warner program. Following a successful academic and athletic career at Columbia High School, Mark accepted a scholarship to compete at Union College. Mark continued to excel in the classroom as well as on the football field. Recently, Mark was named to the 2010 American Football Coaches Association First Team All American. Mark becomes only the 17th First Team All American in the 124 seasons of Union football history. This is the third post-season honor for Mark Herrington. He was a unanimous selection to the 2010 Liberty League All Star First Team and also named to the Division 3 Football East Region First Team. Mark’s leadership abilities were recognized by coaches and players as he was chosen as team captain. A four year varsity starter, Mark will graduate this spring with a degree in History. Mark is the son of John and Lisa Herrington of Rensselaer. ~Joe Peluso

Letter to the Editor: The majority of the town board of North Greenbush cannot take pride in the political hatchet job they attempted to execute last week on the former comptroller whom they fired without warning in January. Taking the heat for the manner in which they acted was apparently not easy. They hired a CPA to make some recommendations on the operations of the comptroller’s office. They made a glaring error by falsely stating the comptroller had opened an “unauthorized bank account” because the town board had never approved it. Mr. Desso for political gain, leaked the false report to the newspapers before it had been delivered to his own Finance Committee. Just a day later, the comptroller fired back providing proof that the account was authorized, opened in the name of the town and in a bank on Main Avenue designated by Desso and the town board. What Desso and his high priced CPA should have known is that Town Boards do not approve the bank accounts, just the banks. Mr. Desso has been on the Board for 3 years and he didn’t realize he has never voted to approve a single bank account? The auditor report harmed the former comptroller’s reputation and may very well open the door to a lawsuit against Desso and the firm. Desso has repeatedly called for a “forensic audit” implying criminal conduct to further enhance the conclusion of the false claim in this taxpayer funded report. Equally reprehensible was the Board majority’s refusal to fix the mistake by failing to support the Supervisor’s resolution to ask the firm to look at the law and proof of their error and decide if they should amend their conclusion. After acknowledging the error, no one would vote for the Supervisor’s resolution. They apparently prefer to leave the report as written with its shamefully inaccurate accusation. This is another example of the conduct of our Town Board which can’t do the right thing even when they are forced to acknowledge that a conclusion is wrong. Firing him was just not enough. Hudson Valley Community College will host a summer camp fair, Sunday, March 13, for families looking to explore camp options for their children this summer. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the McDonough Sports Complex on the Hudson Valley campus, 80 Vandenburgh Ave., Troy. More than 20 camps from around the Capital Region are expected to have booths and representatives in attendance. The event will be co-hosted by Radio Disney and will include a family fun area, clowns, a DJ, music, dancing and a bouncy house for the kids. Parents will be able to speak with summer camp representatives from around the area as well as from Hudson Valley Community College’s own Kids Camps programs. This summer, the college will again offer a variety of athletic camps, as well as Circus Theatricks, Technology Camp, Youth Theater Program, and Summer Academy, a fun educational enrichment program for children. LOCAL RESIDENTS SUPPORT FRED BAYE 9/11 FIRST RESPONDER & FIRE VICTIM The day after Christmas a terrible fire destroyed the home and took the lives of the four dogs owned by East Schodack resident and NYC 9/11 First Responder Fred Baye. After reading about the fire and the losses suffered by Baye, East Greenbush resident and founder of the Facebook page “You Know You Grew Up In East Greenbush‌â€? Barbara Emma decided to contact Baye asking if she could help him rebuild his life after losing his house and his E.G. Resident dogs. Barbara Emma Since then, Emma has been manning what with the two she calls the “Fred Baye Command Postâ€? dogs Cocoa and she organizing whatever she can do to help Ziggy Baye.
