Ceremony to Commemorate September 11th

WATERFORD – There will be a ceremony to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 on September 11th, beginning at 8:15am. The service will be held at Battery Park at the south end of First Street in the village of Waterford. The service will commence with the Veterans Color Guard and include remarks from local clergy and a representative from Waterford Fire districts.

The ceremony will conclude at 8:46am, when all churches within the town are asked to ring their bells. The service is open to all. (P)

George Washington Exhibit Comes to Albany

ALBANY – The Albany Institute of History & Art will be opening “First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: George Washington” on Saturday, August 27. “First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: George Washington” will showcase an eclectic array of items from the Albany Institute’s own collection, including teapots, plates, busts, documents, personal correspondence, lithographs, paintings, and even a walking stick cut from a tree near his Mount Vernon grave site, all paying tribute to this purely American hero. The exhibition pays tribute to the most famous face in American history, and to the man who was first in the hearts of his countrymen. It will remain on display until May 20, 2012, fittingly located at 125 Washington Avenue (and just a few blocks from Washington Park). Proposed 2012 Library Budget Announced CLIFTON PARK – The Board of Trustees of the Clifton ParkHalfmoon Public Library has announced a 2012 budget proposal for district resident approval in a vote scheduled for September 15 at the library. The total proposed budget is $3,954,181, a 2.45% increase over 2011. The tax levy portion of the budget is $3,651,139, a 2.94% increase. The impact on district taxpayers includes a 3.29% tax rate increase for Clifton Park residents amounting to approximately $8 annual rise in library tax for a home assessed at $235,000. Due to a change in equalization rates, Halfmoon property owners would see a 1.26% decrease amounting to an approximate $3 annual reduction in library tax rate for a home assessed at $235,000. In addition to voting for the 2012 budget, district residents will elect three trustee positions, two representing Halfmoon and one for Clifton Park. The Annual Library Budget Vote will be held on Thursday, September 15, between 7am-9pm at the Library, 475 Moe Road. Registered voters, both renters and property owners, living in the Library District are eligible to vote. Voters must be registered at least 30 days prior to the vote. Absentee ballot applications are available online at www.cphlibrary.org or at library service desks for those unable to vote at the library on September 15.

Niagara Falls: An enduring state park America is home to hundreds of national parks, state parks, national monuments, and recreational areas of special distinction. Niagara Falls holds the honor of being the oldest state park in the United States, and still garners millions of visitors each and every year.

Niagara Falls wasn’t always the landmark and state park it is today. In the early 19th century, industrialists built mills and factories along the coast of the falls to harness the powerful energy of the water. In turn, the natural beauty of the area started to wane.

Not wanting the falls to be decimated by industry, some enterprising people decided to start an

organization to preserve the integrity and beauty of the falls and surrounding lands. They formed the Free Niagara movement in the mid 1800s, urging New York State to take back the Niagara Falls area. One of the pivotal people in the movement was Frederick Law Olmstead, the landscape architect who designed New York City’s famed Central Park.

It took 15 years of pressure by the Free Niagara movement to finally have a law passed setting aside the lands of the falls as a recreational area and reservation.

Niagara Falls is actually quite young in terms of waterfall creation. Historians say the falls developed at the end of the Ice Age, about 12,000 years ago. Native Americans were probably the first people to witness the awe of the falls.

The falls actually consist of three different waterfalls: The American Falls, between Prospect Point and Luna Island; Bridal Veil Falls, between Luna Island and Goat Island; and Horseshoe Falls.

The Nielsen Co., which monitors television viewer habits across the globe, reported that, in America alone, 22.76 million viewers watched the ceremony as it was taking place between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 29. That viewing was spread across 11 different networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, BBC America, and E! Entertainment. But broadcast networks were not the only ones to reap the rewards of what came to be known as the Royal Wedding. E! Online reported its 23.6 million page views the Friday of the wedding was the most the site had ever garnered, while ABCNews.com, no stranger to big news stories itself, saw its online traffic reach its highest point since the 2008 presidential election.

GLENS FALLS – The Board of Directors of the Adirondack Balloon Festival is pleased to announce that this year’s Festival, which will take place from September 22 thru September 25 will be a tribute to our dear friend, Walter Grishkot, who was a founder and the long-time organizer of the event. Event kicks off Thursday, September 22 at Crandall Park, in Glens Falls. Opening ceremonies will include a tribute to Mr. Grishkot followed by the first balloon launch. On Friday, activities will move to Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport with an evening launch of 70 plus balloons. A full weekend of activities at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport will start Saturday at 6:30am with over 85 balloons anticipated to attend this year’s event.

Sunday morning’s launch will be a mass ascension entitled “Walter’s Flight”, as all balloons will rise to the sky simultaneously from the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport. New this year, Sunday evening’s launch will return to Crandall Park to close the weekend with a flight of 20+ balloons. CLIFTON PARK – On Saturday, August 27, 10am-4pm, in conjunction with our Summer Community Fair, the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center will be having its annual fall Book Sale at 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park. We have been receiving bags and boxes of books, VHS tapes, CD’s and DVDs, and we are still collecting more. This day will be full of romance and adventure, self-help, do-it-yourself, mystery, and intrigue. Make sure you mark your calendar to come by that day to browse our shelves. Food Pantry Requests Donations

CLIFTON PARK – CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services is in desperate need of non-perishable food items and baby products for its emergency food pantry. Canned tuna and fruit, cereals, rice and pasta, and juices go quickly and are always needed.
