This past weekend was pretty hectic for an old codger. A ninetieth birthday celebration on April first was pretty exciting, but the surprise open house the next day really threw me for a loop. I quickly recovered, however, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the day.

The amazing part is that it was a complete surprise to me, but with my poor hearing, things can go on right under my nose and I never pick up on it. Unbeknownst to me, Yvonne had put a notice in the Pennysaver/News and when the paper came she hid it so I wouldnʼt see it.

I woke up Saturday morning with the thought that now that my birthday was over I could get on with the rest of my life. So getting on with my daily routine, I settled in my chair with paper and coffee, completely at ease with my world. My grandson, Casey had come in from California the day before to help his old grandpa celebrate and was interviewing and video-taping me for his genealogy search when our youngest son, wife, and daughter from Downstate burst in the door. From that point, it never stopped.

More family came loaded down with cakes and all kinds of goodies, which were subsequently arranged on the table.

About this time the control tower pushed me in the bedroom and told this poor, bewildered old man to change his clothes.

Then she let me read the Pennysaver and it was all revealed, but I sure was unprepared for what ensued.

Friends, neighbors, and many gentle readers stopped by on and off all afternoon and into the next day in some instances.

They were all armed with seed packets of every kind and description. I should have a bountiful garden this year if they all get planted. It was a humbling experience, one I shall never forget.

Casey asked me, “How does it feel to be ninety years old, Grandpa?” I answered, “Casey, I donʼt understand it. For ninety years nobody paid any attention to me and now Iʼm a celebrity.”

Casey said, “Itʼs only for one day, Grandpa, now you have to start on another ninety.”

Well, that put things into proper perspective in a hurry. Iʼm not looking forward to another ninety, but I am looking forward to another seasonʼs garden and maybe if Iʼm lucky, several more after that. Iʼm finally getting the knack of it! Now if we can just get rid of that snow.

As usual, I jumped the gun a bit in my planting downstairs. Iʼve got two flats of peppers up in good shape, but I donʼt know what Iʼm going to do with them until planting time. I have, however, refrained from starting my main crop of tomatoes. I will start them in a few days and if my timing is right, they will be ready to coincide with Mother Natureʼs schedule.

One thing Iʼm really looking forward to is trying out my new Mantis Rototiller. Yes, Yvonne got me a new Mantis for my birthday. She hesitated and questioned me about the wisdom of buying a brand new tiller at my age. But why the heck not? Not only that but itʼs got a five year warrantee and I hope to see it lapse.

My old Troy-built pony ran well, but it was a devil for me to start.

The new Mantis is light weight and starts easily.

At times, Gentle Reader, youʼve probably noticed that I complain somewhat about my relationship with Old Ironsides. On reflection, I ask myself, “What would I do without her?” She watches me like a hawk and I canʼt get away with anything. Iʼm always getting into situations that I canʼt seem to cope with. She sees me struggling, steps in, and in no time gets me out of another dilemma. She hovers in the background pulling strings and this is good. When sheʼs not there is when things get dicey. Am I complaining? Not a bit. How do you think I got to be ninety?

Essence L. Todman to Show Art Work at Cazenovia College Senior exhibition caps college career for Corinth, N.Y., student CAZENOVIA, NY - The Cazenovia College Art Gallery in Reisman Hall will host exhibitions of work by seniors in its Art and Design classes.

Essence L. Todman of Corinth, N.Y., is a senior who will receive a bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion design upon graduation, with a minor in studio art - photography. Todman will be part of the exhibition scheduled for April 18 - 24, with an artists' reception on April 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Cazenovia College Art Gallery in Reisman Hall, 6 Sullivan St., is on the corner of Sullivan and Seminary streets in Cazenovia. Hours during the academic year are: Monday through Thursday, 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; Friday, 1-4 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 2-6 p.m. Summer hours vary.

Todman writes of her work, "As a photographer and a fashion designer, I try to create a beautiful interpretation of the feel of the dress while making the model look great.
