Fall Harvest Craft Fair

ALBANY – The Shaker Heritage Society in Albany, will host their Fall Harvest Craft Fair on September 10 & 11 from 10am-4pm.

The fair features over 75 local artisans offering high quality hand made items ranging from pottery and glass to textiles and jewelry for sale. Visitors can also participate in hands-on craft activities.

George Washington Exhibit Comes to Albany

ALBANY – The Albany Institute of History & Art will be opening “First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: George Washington” on Saturday, August 27. “First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: George Washington” will showcase an eclectic array of items from the Albany Institute’s own collection, including teapots, plates, busts, documents, personal correspondence, lithographs, paintings, and even a walking stick cut from a tree near his Mount Vernon grave site, all paying tribute to this purely American hero.

The exhibition pays tribute to the most famous face in American history, and to the man who was first in the hearts of his countrymen. It will remain on display until May 20, 2012, fittingly located at 125 Washington Avenue (and just a few blocks from Washington Park). CLIFTON PARK / HALFMOOON – The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition is seeking sponsors for the 9th Annual Mohawk Towpath Duathlon, which will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Couples commonly ask family and friends to take part in the ceremony as ushers, bridesmaids or readers. Before enlisting the help of a child to fill such roles, couples should carefully consider whether a youngster is capable of participating in the wedding ceremony or if he or she may not be up to the task.

For instance, Prince Henry reportedly delighted little Eliza Lopes with a pink “wiggly worm” so she wouldn’t be frightened by the crowds. Said wiggly worm actually made it into the official group bridal photo, being clutched by Miss Lopes.

Couples worrying about all the little details of their own weddings may not want to fret about kiddie meltdowns or the bloopers that can occur when kids act like kids. Each child’s personal maturity level should be considered before enlisting their help. There are some other strategies to use as well. * Young children serving as flower girls or ring bearers should be able to walk down the aisle without coaxing. If they cannot handle this task, then they should not be asked to take part in the wedding. * Should children prove competent to walk down the aisle unattended, couples can have them then make their way to the seats next to their parents, rather than awkwardly standing with the rest of the bridal party for the ceremony. * An minimum age requirement for wedding participants might be a good idea. A child age 5 or up may be able to appreciate the importance of the event. * Consult with the pastor or officiant of the ceremony. The ceremony location may have rules governing children in the ceremony. * All people who have participated in the ceremony will be invited to the reception. If couples decide to have a kids-free party, then reconsider children in the ceremony. * Think about another role for a young child that will not disrupt the proceedings. Perhaps he or she can help hand out birdseed or small bottles of bubbles to use when the couple has finished their vows.

Or give children disposable cameras and allow them to capture a kids’-eye view of the wedding.

Couples who choose to have children participate in the ceremony have to realize that there is the potential for slip-ups.

Old Fashioned Sunday

LATHAM – The Friends of Pruyn House will celebrate the 28th annual “Old Fashioned Sunday” at the Pruyn House, 207 Old Niskayuna Rd., on Sunday, September 11, from noon-4pm. The public is invited to this Free event, which will be held rain or shine. The historic House built in 1830 will be open for touring as well as the carriage house, one-room schoolhouse, tool museum, Buhrmaster Barn and gardens. There will be music throughout the afternoon, old tyme craft demonstrations, exhibits, and vendors.

For children, there will be pony rides, face painting, a storyteller, a magician, and live animals. There will be homemade baked goods as well as vendors selling hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, ice cream and popcorn. NEW WILTON FOOD PANTRY RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY HELD WILTON, NY (August 16, 2011): The Wilton Food Pantry (WFP) celebrated the opening of its location at the Trinity United Methodist Church,155 Ballard Road, with a "can opening" ceremony held on Tuesday, August 16 that drew high-ranking politicians and corporate executives including Wilton Town Supervisor Art Johnson, Senator Roy McDonald, Assemblyman Tony Jordon, Saratoga E.O.C. Executive Director Julie Hoxsie, Trinity United Methodist Church trustees, and Wilton Rotary Club and Wilton Kiwanis representatives. ”We celebrate not only a new food pantry but what this space represents—a community of people whose determination and compassion have made this a reality for Wilton families,” said Jared Dinsmore, WFP Board President. “It took many neighbors to bring this project to fruition and we are humbled to be able to provide food to those in need in the Town of Wilton.” Dinsmore added, “There has been a 50% rise in families being served at food pantries in Saratoga County since 2008. We are asking the community to partner with us to help end hunger in our region.”

The WFP moved into the Trinity United Methodist Church Annex in July 2011 after nine months of research, planning and minor renovations. Special thanks are extended to the following organizations for their support and donations: Trinity United Methodist Church, Golub Foundation, Wilton Rotary Club, Wilton Kiwanis, Saratoga National Bank & Trust Co., Ballston Spa National Bank, The Town of Wilton, Hannaford Supermarkets and many individuals, corporations and volunteers.

WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE 2011 Sponsored by the West Canada Preserve, LLC Hosted by the Adirondack League Club….Old Forge, New York We are happy to announce the 3rd Annual Adirondack Adventure Weekend event to be held at the Adirondack League Club in Old Forge, NY. This year’s program will build on the success of the first two events, and promises to be even bigger and better. Lodging will be provided at club camps located on the ALC preserve. There will be volunteers from other Adirondack clubs and organizations working with ALC members and staff during the weekend. Activities will include fishing, fly fishing instruction, hiking, canoeing, sporting-clays, kayaking, seaplane rides, photography and more……(great food, too!!)

Wounded Warrior Project members are invited to sign up for this special event… space is limited to 12-14 participants… Anyone interested in going should contact Tom Williams or Karen Feldman as soon as possible. Additional information will be sent to those who respond. Preference will be given to those who have not attended before or those with special needs.

This event starts on Thursday September 8th and concludes on Sunday September 11th….the Saturday night dinner reception will pay special tribute to the 10th anniversary of September 11th, 2001.
