Loved ones offered marriage license chance
New state law allows friends, family members to officiate for day
By H. ROSE SCHNEIDER
Wedding season is upon us. And for some happy couples, one step to wedded bliss could become a lot easier. A new state law now licenses friends or family to officiate a wedding for the day.
Lori Sloma-Konicki was the first to receive this license in the city of Poughkeepsie, after her niece and goddaughter Allison Clerkin asked her to officiate her wedding this May, she said. Clerkin, while raised
IBUYHOUSES!!CASH!!
Catholic, is not very religious. Her aunt, who once drove through a blizzard just to attend her baptism, felt like a much better choice to officiate, she said.
“I really wanted to have that personal touch in our ceremony,” she said.
They considered online ordination, but Sloma-Konickki wasn’t entirely comfortable with it, and Clerkin learned some such weddings have been legally contested. This new state law was, as Sloma-Konicki put it, “the perfect solution.”
“It gives a certain amount of freedom, I would think, to the parties of the marriage,” said Danielle Gillespie, city
clerk and registrar for the city of Albany. The cities of Albany, Saratoga Springs and Hudson each have instructions and applications online for those wishing to take advantage of the new license. But there are still some limitations, Gillespie said. The one-day officiant license does not, for example, give you a chance to speedrun as many marriages as you could possibly officiate within 24 hours. It’s linked to the marriage certificate for the specific couple and expires after the ceremony. That means, while you can get married anywhere in the state, the marriage and officiant’s licenses must
to surreptitiously record a conversation, the provision is in-apposite.”
Montagnino also said that Tetu will not press charges against Kim.
All this has triggered the city’s Republican Committee Chairman Michael Brandi to release a statement about Kim’s use of the “f-word.”“This disturbing pattern has to stop,” Brandi said of the Democratic mayor. “Mayor Kim has shown no ability to control his temper and it is completely inappropriate to direct this kind of vitriol and threats towards an employee in any context. If this was corporate America, Kim would lose his job.” In the end,
both be issued in the same clerk’s office. Applicants must also be over 18 and pay a $25 fee.
The legislation was introduced in January 2021, but versions go back as far as 2006, with legislators calling for it as a way to “modernize” and allow for more intimate ceremonies. It was signed into law in late December and took effect March 28, joining states like California, Massachusetts and Vermont.
But not every city was as prepared. Sloma-Konicki said when she first went to the city chamberlain’s office this April in Poughkeepsie, they were not aware of the new law. A week later they had the form available, and she credits them with coming up with it so quickly. City Chamberlain Jasmin Davis said the city created the form as soon as they were made aware of the law.
“I think that munic-
ipalities are trying as quickly as possible to put it in place,” said Davis, who expects the option to be popular in a city that processes hundreds of marriages a year.
In the nearby town of Poughkeepsie, town clerk Felicia Salvatore said they have created forms for the license, but there has been a lack of guidance from the state. Troy City Clerk Maria DeBonis said the city was still drafting legislation for the license fee.
In Colonie, where such legislation was passed on April 20, Town Clerk Julie Gansle said they were

“Harmony on Parade” with the Racing City Chorus
SARATOGA - Men of all ages - do you love parades and patriotic music?
Of course you do! Join the Racing City Chorus,
ally recognized patient advocate, Professor Holly Ahern; and others (to be confirmed.)
About seven years ago, Capital District natives, Lindsay Keyes and Winslow Crane-Murdoch, were very ill victims of Lyme disease and patients of internationally renowned Hudson Valley Lyme disease physician and expert, Dr. Richard Horowitz. When Dr. Horowitz’s nurse practitioner, Jennifer Goldstock (who currently has a private practice in Latham), learned that they were both young filmmakers, she introduced them and they jumped at the chance to work together professionally toshine a spotlight on the dangers of Lyme disease and the largely ignored plight suffered by Lyme patients.
One of Lindsay’s and Winslow’s first stops was to Uncommon Grounds
from Saratoga Springs, on our Parade Float and sing with us!
We will be participating in five parades this spring and summer:

Saratoga Springs - Flag Day Parade, Saturday, June 10th, 10:30am setup.
Clifton Park – Independence Day Parade, Tuesday, July 4th, 10:30am setup.
Schuylerville - Turning Point Parade, Sunday, August 6th, 11:30am setup.
We are inviting men 18 years of age and older, to join us on our float, to sing patriotic songs you already know!
We can include 3-4 men per parade, so get more details and register early
coffeehouse in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where they met with Lyme Action Network founders Chris Fisk and Holly Ahern who helped to map out the scope of the Lyme disease problem and threads to follow in the development of their story. A history of flawed science, politics, and conflicts of interest has shaped the Lyme disease narrative for decades, much to the detriment of the patients. The filmmakers knew the disease first-hand, and traveled around the country to interview internationally renowned experts from coast to coast, building an accurate and highly informed narrative of the disease and patients’ experience, suffered by too many Lyme patients, as well as building financial and professional backing, including that of Pennebaker Hegedus Films, for their project.
by calling 518-504-SING (7464), or e-mail us at info@RacingCityChorus. org. Only registered individuals will be allowed to participate.
We rehearse each Tuesday and will be reviewing our parade repertoire! If you can’t make any rehearsal, no problem, we’ll provide lyrics on parade day. We make it easy!
We’re a welcoming group, so give us a try!

According to the Canadian lifestyle resource Icy Canada, which culled various data points and sources, window and door upgrades, kitchen and bath remodels and deck projects are the most popular renovations in Canada.

6 Ways to Tame Nerves Before a Job Interview
Interviews are an integral component of the hiring process. According to Zippia, the average corporate job opening garners 250 résumés. Among those, only four to six people are likely to be interviewed. With such competition for jobs, landing an interview is an opportunity to be cherished. Furthermore, candidates should do their best to ensure interviews go as smoothly and effectively as possible. Nerves can derail an interview. Nervous energy is a byproduct of humans’ “flight or fight” response in stressful situations. Adrenaline builds up in the body and that can make for a nervous interview. The following anxiety-taming tips can help anyone remain calm, cool and collected during an interview.
1. Laugh out loud. Humor can diffuse nervous feelings. Rather than stewing on the upcoming interview, watch a funny movie or listen to some standup comedy to help you laugh and lighten up.
2. Leave plenty of time for travel. Anxiety can creep in if you’re running late for an interview. Leave plenty of time to get there when interviewing in person. You don’t want to stroll in sweaty and out of breath because you just ran from the subway station or parking lot. For remote interviews, ensure that meeting links are working properly and that you understand how to use the conferencing application in advance of the interview.
3. Be prepared. Prepare for the interview and conduct a trial run with a friend or family member. Research commonly asked interview questions but be prepared to answer more job-specific queries as well. Preparation can help you feel less nervous and more in control.
4. Clear your mind. Figure out which relaxation method works for you and employ it. Some find taking a short stroll outside enjoying nature clears their mind, while others prefer deep breathing and meditation. Some people may feel more relaxed after an exercise session. Build these coping mechanisms into your schedule on the day of an interview.
5. Change your perception. An interview is a conversation and not an interrogation. Certainly you are selling yourself to the recruiter, but the company also has to sell itself to you. Interviews are two-way streets to determine if the employer-employee dynamic is the right fit. Remembering that you are on somewhat equal footing can make the interview less nerve-wracking.
6. Make small talk. While waiting to be called into the interview, speak with others, such as the receptionist, other employees walking by or even people in the elevator. Small conversations can shift your focus from internal thoughts to external stimuli. Job interviews can drum up nerves, but there are strategies to help candidates overcome their nerves.

History Center to Open New Exhibit that Celebrates
Saratoga
BALLSTON SPA - The trustees and staff of the Saratoga County History Center invite residents and tourists alike to celebrate the storied history of their beloved Saratoga County in a new exhibit at Brookside Museum: “Saratoga County: Our Home!”
“Saratoga County: Our Home!”, which opens May 20, 2023, takes guests on an immersive, artifact-rich journey spanning four centuries of Saratoga life, business, and nature. The exhibit fills three large rooms in the historic Brookside Museum, itself a cherished relic of local history from the early years of Saratoga resort life. From the First Nations who lived here before European settlement to the new tech-centered economy, “Saratoga County: Our Home!” offers guests a rich time-travel experience that will instill awe and respect for the county’s evolution.
The exhibit features scores of priceless artifacts from Brookside Museum’s vast collections, including a Bible printed in Amsterdam in 1718, an 1804 tin chandelier from the present Medbery Inn, a windowpane etched by Washington Irving during his Ballston visit, a section of the 1832 railroad track from Schenectady to Saratoga, and a roulette wheel seized in a 1950 police raid. The most recent object is a “wafer,” a Global Foundries disk holding microchips. Over a hundred historic photographs place the objects in context, along with interpretive text that discusses thirteen geographic, economic, and social forces that created the county we
Nature of Perseverance”
Artworks by Kendra Farstad
SARATOGA - Please join us in welcoming Kendra Farstad to Spring Street Gallery from April 28th through June 23rd, 2023. A fine artist and muralist, Farstad had been inspired to work this February through Creative February, an art movement begun by local artist Takeyce Walter. Creative February calls on artists to challenge themselves to develop artwork daily throughout the month of February. These creative endeavors range from drawing, sculpture and jewelry to poetry and performance art. Farstad’s work focuses on the use of oil paints on canvas and panel, taking inspiration from the landscapes that surround her. During the months of April, May, and June when the snow melts and the flowers start to peek out of the ground, Spring Street Gallery is happy to share the work that Farstad has created during her February creative venture. Farstad received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art and a Masters Degree in Anthropology from The University at Albany. She lives in upstate New York with her daughter and dog Fionn. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this exhibit will benefit RISE Housing and Support Services, a human service agency that has been serving people in Saratoga and the surrounding counties since 1978. RISE programs provide safe, healthy housing and support services to people with mental health concerns, substance use, and other life challenges.
Spring Street Gallery is located at 110 Spring Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
