Bicycle Recycle Day at EMS SARATOGA SPRINGS – Looking to clean out your garage or storage space, while providing essential transportation to needy members of our local community? On Saturday April 6, from 10am-4pm, representatives from Bikeatoga will be at the Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) store at 3066 Route 50 in Wilton to collect used bicycles. Bicycles collected will be distributed to needy people in the Saratoga Springs region by Bikeatoga. Bikeatoga (formerly Saratoga Healthy Transportation Network) is a local bicycle advocacy organization dedicated to pushing for a better future by making functional cycling more convenient, accessible, and safe in and around Saratoga Springs, NY. Bikeatoga’s volunteer members work to emphasize the environmental, economic, and health-related benefits of everyday cycling, as well as the pleasure of it. The group runs the Bikeatoga Workshop out of the basement of the Church of St. Peter at 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The Workshop is generally open on Thursdays from 6-8pm, and Saturdays from 9am-12pm. For more about the bike workshop visit www.bikeatoga. org, or www.facebook.com/bikeatoga. A children’s bike giveaway is planned for the spring, and adults can “earn a bike” by volunteering at the workshop. After being paged by Fire Control, After The Fire members respond to the fire scene to provide the family members with clothing, gift cards, personal care items, a night’s stay at a participating hotel/motel, Red Cross referral, informational material, emotional support-- whatever is needed to help the family through an extremely traumatic situation. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday at 7pm as follows: February, March, October & November at Eagle Matt Lee Fire House on Washington St. in Ballston Spa; April, May, June & September meetings are held at Halfmoon Town Hall on Harris Rd. in Halfmoon. SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Fair has announced that up to ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to current New York State high school seniors and also students enrolled in college. The New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York State Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarships. The qualifying students must be active at the Saratoga County Fair or with the New York State Showpeople’s Association. All applicants from Saratoga County must submit their applications through the Saratoga County Fair or the NYSSA no later than Friday, April 12, 2013. It will take place on March 28 at 7pm. Discover how one of the nation’s worst floods interrupted life in and around Saratoga County. Through photographs, newspaper articles and personal accounts, Corinth Historian Rachel Clothier will explain how this natural disaster destroyed local landmarks and created permanent changes in the area. SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Community Hospice of Saratoga will offer a six-week support group for children who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives, including a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Men and women looking to finance the purchase of their next vehicle could potentially fall victim to a practice referred to as “spot deliveries.” Consumer advocacy groups warn that spot deliveries, in which a car is sold “on the spot” before the financing has been completed, can leave consumers with average or below average credit vulnerable to abuse. When a person wants to finance a vehicle purchase, the dealership must first find a bank to approve their loan application, a process many banks do not do on nights or weekends, when many people are inclined to shop for a vehicle. During a spot delivery, a dealership will allow the consumer to drive off the lot with the car, even though the consumer has yet to be approved for a loan. In some cases, the lender may not approve the application, forcing the consumer to return the vehicle, while other times the lender might only approve the loan with a high interest rate, one the consumer may be unwilling to pay. In addition, lenders may require a higher down payment the consumer cannot afford. To protect themselves from spot deliveries, consumers can arrange for vehicle financing on their own before visiting a dealership, or insist that the lender approve their applications before they take possession of the vehicle.
