Evening performances beginning at 7:30pm and a special matinee performance on Sat., March 23 at 2pm. The story explores three days in which many changes occur in the tight-knit Dominican-American community of the Washington Heights section of NYC. Students & Seniors: $5; Adults: $10. Knights Busy at Corpus Christi ROUND LAKE – The Knights of Columbus Council #10869 are having a very busy month of March. Their Annual St. Patrick’s Dinner and Dance will be held on Saturday evening, March 16, in the parish center. A dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage may be eaten in-house at a Cost of $12. Take out is $10. Attendees will enjoy an evening of Socializing, Dancing, and Live Entertainment by Irish Dancers and a DJ. Tickets will be sold after all Masses. On Sunday morning, March 17, from 8:30am to noon, you will find the Knights serving a breakfast of pancakes, hash browns, sausage, etc. at a cost of $6, and $3 for children ages 4-12. Tickets may be purchased in the parish center that morning. In addition, the busy Knights are hosting fish fry dinners every Friday during Lent at 5:30pm. Reservations are requested but not required. SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is proud to announce a new program aimed at Veterans who are interested in having a mentoring relationship with another Veteran. This program aims to match Veterans with other Veterans who have similar interests, goals, or life experiences. If you are someone who is attempting to get re-acclimated to civilian life, and looking for some extra help with the transition we would love to talk to you! Our mission is to design, implement and evaluate a Saratoga County based peer-to-peer support program for veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. We do this by providing: outreach, education, access to local resources, peer to peer relationships, a sense of hope, help with building resiliency, tools for family and community connectedness, and access to suicide prevention/intervention measures. BSBPA to Celebrate 30th Anniversary at Annual Meeting BALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association will hold its Annual Meeting and Community Mixer on Monday, March 18, from 6-8pm at the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge, 10 Hamilton Street. The Association will be celebrating its 30th year of service to the Ballston Spa community. The BSBPA was formed in 1983 to promote the village of Ballston Spa, its businesses and merchants, and to foster community pride through events, activities and village beautification. The Annual Meeting and Mixer will begin with a social hour and buffet at 6pm, followed by the official meeting at 7pm. Officer elections will be held, along with a wrap up of BSBPA achievements over the past 30 years and a look toward the future. This event is open to the public; the cost is $20 per person. Nonmembers attending that evening will receive a $5 discount off membership dues if they join the Association. Malta to hold Armed Forces Day Parade MALTA – The Town of Malta is planning a special salute to the military by holding a parade on Saturday, May 18, “Armed Forces Day.” The Town has been running an annual parade since 2009 on the Saturday prior to Patriot Day – the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. History of the Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. Although St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, many people assume the role of being Irish for the day and participate in the revelry of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these revelers celebrate without fully understanding the man behind the holiday. Despite having such strong links to Ireland, St. Patrick did not begin his life on the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in Britain in the fourth century. His given name was Maewyn. His father was a Christian deacon, but there is no evidence that theirs was a particularly religious family. It is surmised that the role of deacon was more for tax benefits rather than a holy calling. Some history suggests that Patrick considered himself a pagan in the early years of his life. At age 16, after being taken to Ireland as a prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate, Patrick began rethinking his religious beliefs. While working alone as a shepherd, he turned to religion for solace and adopted the name Patrick. He began dreaming of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity. According to his historical writings, he heard a voice in a dream, which he believed to be God. God told him it was time to leave Ireland.

Patrick died March 17, 461. Because the Irish descended from a long line of storytellers who had a rich tradition of oral legend and myth, there are many tales of Patrick that abound, many of which are untrue. He did not scare actual snakes out of Ireland nor did he take part in many of the embellished tales. He did succeed in making a big historical impact, which is why he entered into sainthood and had the date of March 17 established in his honor.
You Don’t Need a Pot of Gold to Buy a Shed at
Patrick escaped his captivity after six years by walking 200 miles to the Irish coast. He boarded a ship and fled back to Britain. Patrick had another holy revelation that he was to return to Ireland as a missionary. To prepare, he began to study at a monastery under the authority of St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years. He was ordained a minister and traveled back to Ireland with the purpose of assisting Christians already living in Ireland and to converting the Irish to Christianity. Patrick had an intimate knowledge of Irish culture due to his captivity. He was also familiar with traditional rituals. Therefore, instead of trying to remove all that was customary to the Irish people, he began working some of their rituals into his Christian teachings so they would seem more natural to the Irish. He managed to convert many pagans, and he and his disciples preached and converted many more. Patrick helped to build churches all over Ireland. By the end of Patrick’s life, the majority of Ireland embraced

What Is Corned Beef? At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part. Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available. According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was drycured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it. Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

Pointer Mix Puppies These babies are also from a high kill shelter down south. They look to have some terrier in them because of their wirey muzzels. One pup is a special need because it may be blind in one eye. That does not seem to keep him down at all. He can keep up with his siblings with no problem. The other two are fine and handsome pups. An Unusual Catch - Historic Lock 19 Brings Home A GOBY The Stakeholders’ Regional Volunteer Center, based in Albany, held its annual GOBY Awards on March 5 at the GE Theater in Schenectady. It was an exciting event, celebrating those who chose to “Get On Board” and volunteer for worthy projects and initiatives in the Capital Region in 2012. One such project, which we’ve talked about so often, was the preservation and improvement effort at Historic Lock 19 in Vischer Ferry, completed in only 10 months’ time. Pete Bardunias, How did we get it done so quickly? Volunteers. President/CEO, the Chamber Concerned citizens wanting to make a difference. of Southern Saratoga County Businesspeople from large and small firms who came forward to help complete the project, devoting some 1600 hours and about $150,000 in in-kind services to its success. The businesses who received the GOBY award included Turner Construction, Curtis Lumber, GE Power and Water, Momentive Performance Materials, AJS Masonry, County Waste, Keller and Sons, Legacy Timber Frames, Siena Fence Company, TREX, Gil VanGuilder Surveyors and SMRT Architects and Engineers, PC. We also had help from other Chamber member families such as Anna Williams and her Dad, Michael, from Pens Ink, Dan and Joseph Kumlander from Roback, Kumlander and Pehl CPAs, and my wife Eileen and son Jonathan, plus interested citizens who wished to lend a hand. Finally, this wasn’t possible without support from and the approval of the Shenendehowa Central School District, the New York State Canal Corporation, the Town of Clifton Park, and the board of directors of the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County. With some 80 high school students taking part in this educational and cultural exercise, it was a model of true collaboration in every sense of the word. Thanks to their efforts, we will be dedicating the Historic Lock 19 Bridge on April 29 at 1PM at the Lock. Check out this column for more information as the date approaches.

At this point last year, our lawns and yards were snow–free and ready for our attention. Things are far different this time around. Winter is hanging tough. Later in the season the idea of “enjoying” yard work may seem a bit of a stretch but, after being cooped up all winter, it will indeed be a joy doing anything outside in the sunshine. The first order of business will be to rake the lawn. Obviously raking removes all the twigs, branches and pinecones from the lawn but there are other benefits. Raking will fluff up the matted blades of grass. This allows air to dry the old blades of grass, which lessen the chances of a fungal disease taking hold. A raked lawn will also warm up quicker and get the grass growing sooner. Another benefit of spring raking is the chance to get reacquainted with our yard and take note of areas that are thin and might need extra attention. I like to rough up thin areas and put down grass right away. It’s too cold for the seed to germinate but the cold won’t hurt the seed. By putting the seed down now, it will have a chance to get all pumped up with moisture so it will germinate as soon as temperatures are right. This will give the young grass as much time as possible to establish a root system before hot summer weather arrives (now there’s a nice thought). Another project that I like to tackle early is feeding all the permanent members of my garden community: the trees, shrubs and perennials. You might be thinking, “Nothing out there is really growing yet! Why should I feed plants that show no signs of life?” A valid question. The reason I like to get these woody and perennial plants fed early is this: the granular fertilizers and tree food spikes that I’ll use take some time to dissolve and permeate the soil. When you get the food into the soil early, it will have plenty of time and spring rain to dissolve and soak into the soil. When the plants get the warmth they need to spring into growth, the nutrients they need will already be there waiting for them. Since our garden plants have depleted a great deal of their reserve energy just surviving the winter, they need nutrients more in the early spring than at any other time of year. For trees and large shrubs, an easy way to apply nutrients is by pounding in some of those tree food spikes that are made of compressed fertilizer. When you go to the garden center, you’ll notice that there are different formulas for different plants. The spikes for evergreens and shade trees are higher in nitrogen and those for fruit tree are higher in phosphorus to enhance fruit production. You may have large, flowering shrubs like lilacs that you want to feed with spikes. The fruit tree spikes, with their higher phosphorus formula would make them appropriate for use on flowering shrubs as well. Be careful to follow the directions when using fertilizer spikes. They should be driven into the ground AWAY from the trunk or stem of the plant you’re feeding. The tiny roots that take up the nutrients are about the same distance from the trunk as the outermost branch tips. For trees, it’s easy to figure out where to place the spikes. Simply walk away from the trunk until you are standing under the outermost branch tips and pound in the spikes at that circumference. How many spikes you’ll need to usse is determined by the diameter of the trunk. There are directions on the package. Follow them. More isn’t necessarily better. If you use too many spikes or place them too close to the trunk, you may do more harm than good. For smaller shrubs and perennials, you’ll want to use a gentle, granular food. I like the Espoma products. You can pound holes around small shrubs (under the outermost branch tips) and pour the appropriate amount of plant food into them. When in doubt, less is best. On the perennials, I’ll dig a shallow trench well away from the crown of the plant and apply a modest amount of gentle Espoma Flower-tone plant food. Follow the recommendations on the package and, again, when in doubt, less is best. If you can get out there at the first opportunity and get your nutrients into the soil early, your landscape plants will be able to take advantage of them and have the best season possible. It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some people prefer to put their four-way-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose. The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.
