Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast BALLSTON LAKE – Boy Scouts Troop 83 will hold a Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast (all you can eat) from 8am-12noon on Sunday, May 12, at the Ballston Lake Fire Department on Route 146A in Ballston Lake. BALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa House and Garden Club is pleased to announce its third annual spring Geranium Sale. Available for sale are pink, white, purple, red, dark red, and salmon geraniums with buds and blooms in 4-1/2 inch pots at $4 each. Proceeds from the sale will supplement club efforts to provide funding for the following club initiatives: a scholarship to send a Ballston Spa middle school student age 12-14 to Camp Colby in Saranac Lake in the summer for one week; a cash award for a deserving Ballston Spa high school senior that has been involved in horticulture or a related field; and other club projects such as the maintenance of the Pink Garden at the Ballston Spa Public Library and the Upper Trail Garden at the Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail. Veteran Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is proud to announce a new program aimed at Veterans who are interested in having a mentoring relationship with another Veteran. This program aims to match Veterans with other Veterans who have similar interests, goals, or life experiences. If you are someone who is attempting to get reacclimated to civilian life, and looking for some extra help with the transition we would love to talk to you! Our mission is to design, implement and evaluate a Saratoga County based peer-to-peer support program for veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. We do this by providing: outreach, education, access to local resources, peer to peer relationships, a sense of hope, help with building resiliency, tools for family and community connectedness, and access to suicide prevention/intervention measures. Children Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week BALLSTON SPA – Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, announced today that local children completed a craft activity celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week. Partnering with the Ballston Area Community Center and the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Brookside helped BACC children create 56 origami swans that will be distributed to The Saratoga County Domestic Violence Safe House, The Vet House, and The Guardian House in Ballston Spa. This activity was inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Week, where people are encouraged to do good deeds “randomly.” Random Acts of Kindness Week occurs annually. Also celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week, the DVRC recently worked with BACC children to create a Kindness Quilt. The project was inspired by the book, “The Kindness Quilt,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Over 40 children in grades K through 7th participated in the project. The Kindness Quilt is on display at Brookside Museum, accompanying the museum’s exhibition on quilts called The Threads of Time. (A)

Things To Look For On A Vehicle History Report A vehicle history report can be a used car buyer’s best friend. Whereas in the past buyers bought used cars and hoped for the best, today’s used car buyers can rely on a vehicle history report to tell them all about the vehicle while helping buyers make more informed decisions. When shopping for a preowned vehicle, you should always ask for a vehicle history report, regardless of whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private citizen. If the seller refuses, it’s time to look elsewhere. When a seller eagerly provides a vehicle history report, buyers should examine a few things on the report so they can be more comfortable should they ultimately purchase the vehicle. * Number of previous owners: All vehicle history reports list how many owners a vehicle has had in the past. In general, the more owners a vehicle has had, the more risk you’re assuming as the buyer. Vehicles that tend to change hands often are less likely to have been well maintained. In addition to how many owners a car has had, look at who those owners were. Vehicles that were once owned by a rental car company, for instance, were likely not treated very well, as few people care how much abuse their rental car endures. However, a car once owned by a rental agency likely has lots of highway miles on it, and such driving is less taxing on a vehicle than city driving where the vehicle’s engine is stopping and starting more frequently. * Specifics: Just because a seller provides you with a vehicle history report does not necessarily mean that report matches up with the vehicle you might be buying. A dishonest seller might try to pass off the history report of another vehicle of the same make and model as his own. This is done to hide a suspect vehicle history or even when thieves are selling a stolen car to an unsuspecting buyer. Check the vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the vehicle to ensure the car you’re looking at matches the car on the history report. In addition, each vehicle history report describes the car, so if the description does not match you might be holding an inaccurate report. * Location: The vehicle history report will show where the car has lived over the years. Vehicles that have spent ample time in harsh weather, such as Alaska or another region with a prolonged winter, have likely had their share of weather-related wear and tear, more so than a car driven in warmer climates. While this does not mean past owners didn’t properly maintain the car, some buyers might be wary of purchasing a vehicle that has endured too many harsh winters. * Physical appearance: Does the physical appearance of the car match up with its history report? Sometimes a vehicle owner does not report when a car has been in an accident. Owners might do this to avoid higher insurance premiums or to mask the vehicle’s history because they intend to sell the car down the road. If a car exhibits any signs of body work that aren’t on its history report or if the car drives awkwardly but has supposedly not been in an accident, buyers should consider this a major red flag and strongly consider walking away from the vehicle and continuing their search elsewhere. A vehicle history report can calm the fears of a buyer shopping for a preowned vehicle. But even when a report is made available, buyers should still examine the report closely to ensure the vehicle is all it’s cracked up to be.

Another longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleum-based oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional motor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switching back and forth from one to the other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. * Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Laboratories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines during their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Daphne is a 1-year old Jack Russell Terrier. She is a sweet girl about 20 pounds and is wiggly and friendly! The veterinarian's office she came from said she doesn't seem especially fond of men, and we haven't had a chance to assess her with dogs. Daphne does not get along with cats at all. She needs to be in a cat free home!

Teddy

Teddy is a terrier, possibly mixed with lab, who weighs about 25 pounds. He’s a great dog, good with kids and other dogs, but not cats. Teddy is housebroken and loves to play and have all your attention! Don't you just love those ears?!

These guys are beautiful pups. They are about 8 weeks old, up to date on shots and have had their first worming.

8 year old, pure breed Beagle. Neutered, up to date on shots. Poor Doc! He's got quite the story to tell. He was put on Craig's list(We hate Craig's list) because his owners wanted a smaller dog and he was too big, at 30 lbs. So they gave him away at the tender young age of seven, to a nineteen year o...ld with no stability in his life. Last week the nineteen year old was evicted with Doc and four cats. We took in Doc and two of the cats and another rescue took the other two cats. Doc is a very confused gentlemen. He is a little sad and all he wants is a family with kids, other animals and a place to call home till the end of his days. He is a purebred beagle, a little chubby, up to date on vaccines and neutered. He is the sweetest boy ever.

Malta to hold Armed Forces Day Parade MALTA – The Town of Malta is planning a special salute to the military by holding a parade on Saturday, May 18, “Armed Forces Day.” The Town has been running an annual parade since 2009 on the Saturday prior to Patriot Day – the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. Well, April is as fickle as ever. We can have sunshine and 70 degrees or 30 degrees and snow. Experienced gardeners are used to the unruly nature of April weather and have learned to adapt. I don’t mind the cool weather since it will hold things back a bit. Root growth occurs when soil temperatures are low and, when it finally does warm up, the plants will have a good, strong root system and they’ll explode into growth with plenty of moisture available. A lot of us have managed to use the warm moments to get our beds cleaned out and our lawns raked. I find that these cooler days are a great time to work outside since you don’t get overheated and there aren’t any pesky mosquitoes to drive you crazy. Someone recently asked me why there aren’t any products that had lawn food, crabgrass preventer and weed killer in one bag. The gentleman thought this would be a great idea since it would save a lot of time. His question reminded me that there is a lot of confusion about the differences between weed killer and crabgrass preventer. Let me try to straighten this out. Crabgrass, unlike most lawn weeds, grows from seed that the mother plant produced the previous summer. The mother plant dies completely over the winter never to be seen again. In early spring (starting about now) the seed germinate and start to grow. Crabgrass preventer is an agent that dissolves and forms a coating on the surface of the soil. ANY seeds that try to sprout and push a root through that barrier are killed. The best way to time you crabgrass preventer application is to keep an eye on the forsythias and lilacs bushes that are growing in your yard or neighborhood. You want have your crabgrass preventer applied before the flowers of the lilacs are completely open. It is a convenient coincidence that crabgrass seeds germinate at the same time that forsythia’s flowers are falling to the ground…just as the first lilac flowers are opening. Spring weather can be fickle but, if you use the forsythias and lilacs as your clock, your crabgrass preventer will always go on at the right time. Remember that crabgrass preventer forms a thin film on the surface of the soil so make sure that all your raking is done before you apply crabgrass preventer. If you rake afterward, you will scratch up the barrier and crabgrass will be able to grow. Dandelions, plantain and other lawn weeds are perennial plants. They come up from a root system that was established the year before and they survive the winter. Because they are coming up from roots not down from seeds, they are immune to the effects of crabgrass preventer. Lawn weed killers do not prevent weeds, they kill existing weeds. Weed killers (liquid or granular) are basically plant growth hormones that, when applied at the proper time, cause the weed to die from the shock that occurs when the weed tries to grow faster that it is able to. Sort of like an overdose of stimulants. If weed killers are applied too early in the season (when nigh time temperature are below 50 degrees) they will not kill the weeds. During the cool days and nights of early spring, the weeds are not growing rapidly enough for the growth hormone to cause the level of shock necessary to kill the weed. Every June people complain that the weed killer they used is “no good” or “doesn’t work”. The real reason it didn’t work is because it was applied WAY too early. Sure, you can look out in the yard and see those buggars out there growing but it’s too early to get rid of them unless you want to dig them out. Bide you time and strike when the iron is hot (or when the soil is warmer). The best time to apply weed killers will be during late May or early June. If you apply it sooner you are wasting time and money. Another important thing to remember about weed killer is that they are absorbed ONLY through the leaves of the weeds. Because of this, weed killers MUST remain in contact with the leaves of the weeds for a minimum of 24 hours (48 is best) for the weed to absorb enough to be killed. Many who use liquid weed killers will soak and soak an area to be sure they get the weed killer into the soil. Any weed killer that isn’t actually touching the leaves is wasted. Since leaf contact is the name of the game with weed killers, don’t mow the lawn prior to applying weed killer. If you mow, you’re removing the leaves that absorb the weed killer. Keep an eye on the weather and make sure that you don’t apply weed killer when rain is expected within 48 hours after the application. Even a quick shower is enough to wash the weed killer off the leaves, rendering it ineffective. Wait to wage your war on weeds Thanks for the read.
