LATHAM – Erika Sanger, Director of Education at the Albany Institute of History and Art, will discuss the diplomatic mission and exploration of Japanese culture by Robert Hewson Pruyn. Pruyn was appointed Minister by Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Pruyn’s private papers include detailed and descriptive correspondence between Pruyn and his wife, other family members, and business associates. The letters recount his travel, the death of his eldest son Edward in San Francisco en route, his first audience at the palace of the Japanese Tycoon, day-to-day financial concerns and the travails of his mission in Japan during the Bakumatsu. Sanger will share images of some of the photographs and ephemera Pruyn collected and read excerpts from the letters. The talk will be at 2pm on Sunday, March 24. (A)

Saint Patrick’s Day facts There are many things the public knows about Saint Patrick’s Day, but there’s much they may not know about the holiday or Irish-American heritage for that matter. Here are some facts and trivia that might surprise even the most devoted of Patty’s Day revelers. * Despite St. Patrick being alive centuries earlier, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations didn’t begin until 1737.
At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part. Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available. According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it. Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

* More people of Irish heritage live in the United States than currently live in all of Ireland. Irish-Americans living stateside predominantly reside in the North Atlantic states. * Saint Patrick angered the Celtic Druids many times by converting pagans to Christianity. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions. * Green is not the official color affiliated with Saint Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a familiar hue during the nineteenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than Saint Patrick himself.
Follow The Leprechaun To Micklas Jewelers
* The three-leaf shamrock has more historical significance with regards to Saint Patrick’s day than a four-leaf clover. That’s because the three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God exists as three persons. * For 67 years, Saint Patrick’s Day was a “dry” holiday in Ireland. James O’Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made Saint Patrick’s Day a religious holiday in the country. Therefore, local pubs were obligated to close. The law was overturned in 1970. * According to their Web site, Hallmark has been selling green Saint Patrick’s Day cards since the early 1920s, now selling as many as 15 million annually.

Adopt A Pet... Pet Pet of of the the Week Week Liza
This poor kitty was found on the side of the road by a gentleman going to work. He just couldn't leave her there. Not only is she beautiful but she is a non-stop motor. She is UTD on vaccine and de-wormed. Can anyone give this lovely little girl a forever home?
Sadie & Family
The first of our spring kittens has arrived earlier than usual and this is only the beginning. Sadie was lucky to come to us and get out of the elements before her babies arrived. Her family is doing well. Her kittens are about 4 weeks old and we are taking deposits on them. Please let this be a reminder to spay and neuter your pets.
Eva
Is ADORABLE!! She came in with puppies and now her family is gone and it is her turn. Eva is UTD on shots, heartworm negative and wormed. She is super friendly however she does not like cats much. She keeps asking when is it my turn?

If you’re one of those homeowners who’s been moaning about how hard it’s been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn’t been completely devastated just because a flood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion “robo-signing” mortgage settlement. In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you’re within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are “move-in-ready,” so if yours isn’t ... well, there’s your problem.
“That’s why I tell clients it’s worth making certain strategic fixes if they’re looking for quicker and more profitable sales.” So, which “fixes” are worth it, and which aren’t? Read on: Worth It:Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said. Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. “Whatever you do might not suit the buyer,” says O’Neill, “and meanwhile, you’d have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars.” Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode.
Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same “taste” issue as above.
Worth It: Anything that enhances “curb appeal.” If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it’s been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are you’ve already lost the sale. “It’s a huge turn-off,” says O’Neill, “and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don’t like.” So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roofing manufacturer in North America), which have the look of luxury shingles but at very affordable prices (www. gaf.com). Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of “you” there is, the more likely prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.
AUTOMOTIVE
“Buyers generally look at ‘asis’ properties that need work, and say ‘I’ll pass,’” says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, N.J.
Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore.

(NewsUSA) - When faced with an intimidating job market and sizeable student loans, students must give serious thought to which college degrees will help ensure a job with a substantial salary. While the phrases “guarantee a job” and “substantial salary” are nearing extinction, job reports and salary trends indicate a few reliable, profitable and in-demand careers. Most notably, engineering.
(ASME). “It’s one that offers immense gratification along with concrete economic benefits. The unemployment rate among engineers is currently about half the national average.”
gineers in the American Jobs Act of 2011, some colleges are seeing more engineering degrees. A New Hampshire report on higher education said the greatest growth was seen in the field of engineering in the past five years. The recent surge can’t come at a better time as public and private companies need more engineering graduates from American schools.
EMPLOYMENT
Engineering is consistently listed in CNN’s “Best Jobs in America,” and it’s a toppaying field that reports high worker satisfaction. What’s even more promising? Data from 2012 show that engineering salaries are rising. “Engineering continues to be one of the most robust professions,” says Thomas G. Loughlin, executive director of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Loughlin isn’t understating when he says, “economic benefits.” The Huffington Post rounded up the top 15 college majors with the highest pay, and eight of the 15 were engineering degrees. The “2012 Engineering Income and Salary Survey” conducted by ASME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) revealed that nearly 72 percent of those surveyed received a salary increase. In 2012, engineers earned an average income of $103,497 -- a four percent rise from last year. Whether in response to the promising salary or President Obama’s push for more en-
The U.S. still produces fewer engineers than other nations, roughly 70,000 American engineers compared to 600,000 and 350,000 from China and India, respectively. Since more education means higher pay, engineering colleges will likely stay on the upward trend. To be frank, the field of engineering isn’t going anywhere but up. Learn more at www.asme.org.

AUTOMOTIVE Octane rating affects car costs A variety of factors come into play when a person is deciding which new or previously owned vehicle to purchase. While body type, model year and make all are considered, shoppers should also look into what type of fuel the vehicle needs. Many drivers are aware of the different grades of gasoline available at the pump. Unleaded versions come in regular, plus and premium varieties, which coordinates to the octane of the gasoline. The octane rating of gasoline tells a driver how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites, rather than igniting normally from a spark plug in the vehicle engine. Lower-octane gasoline can withstand less compression than higher-octane gasoline.
more per gallon than the lowest octane. Over time, filling up with premium gas can be a significant factor in how much it costs to own a particular vehicle. If you are looking to save money, it is important to consider just how much of your budget will be devoted to fuel costs. A vehicle that requires premium gasoline instead of regular gasoline may end up costing a few hundred dollars more per year based on the size of the fuel tank. It is important to note that using a higher octane fuel in a vehicle that is not rated for it will not increase performance -- it only will end up costing you more. That’s because the octane rating refers to how much energy it takes to ignite the gasoline and at what point in the compression cycle, not how much power the gasoline will put out. Premium gas will not improve gas mileage or give the vehicle more “oomph” if the engine is not designed to accommodate a higher-octane fuel. In fact, engines that are not designed for high-octane gas may actually lose power because it burns so much slower and the ignition timing is not tuned for it.
EMPLOYMENT
Gas that ignites on its own rather than from a spark from the spark plug causes knocking and pinging, which can damage the engine. Therefore it is important to use the right octane level of gasoline for a vehicle, based on the car’s compression ratio for the engine. Car engines that are rated in a particular way will benefit from the correct octane in gasoline. Higher-performance engines commonly found in race cars and sporty, luxury vehicles will generally require a premium, high-octane gasoline to run at their optimal performance. Most cars on the market are built to take regular 87-octane gasoline. A visit to the gas station clearly indicates that higher-octane fuel costs

It is always wise to consult with the owner’s manual to determine the type of fuel that will offer the best performance in the car. Those shopping for a new vehicle should pay attention to octane ratings and not assume that every car they test drive is best when running on regular octane.
