The Lohnes Award is a citizenship/ sportsmanship award sponsored by Bob Lohnes of Schaghticoke, for an outstanding Rensselaer County 4-H Horse project member. Morgan is a 10 year member of the Horses R Us Plus 4-H Club, and has participated in a wide variety of horse programs from educational activities, such as Horse Communications, Horse Bowl and Hippology; in addition to being an avid horse exhibitor at 4-H Horse Shows. In addition to being active in Rensselaer County, as a 4-H member, Morgan has competed at the Regional level for 4-H Horse Communications and Horse Bowl, as well as the regional and state level for Hippology. Morgan has represented Rensselaer County by showing at the New York State Fair 4-H Horse Show and the 4-H Intercounty Horse Competition in Elmira, NY. This year Morgan opted not to be a competitor in Horse Bowl, but chose to co-coach the Novice Horse Bowl Team. The Lohnes Awardee is nominated and selected by the members of the 10 different 4-H Horse Clubs in Rensselaer County. Morgan is a senior at Averill Park High School and plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College in the fall.

SPRING CLEANUP VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE Stop in at the Diver Library on Saturday, April 30th, between 9 AM and 3 PM to help out with Spring Cleanup! Volunteer opportunities include garden work, raking, and general clean up outdoors, as well as indoor cleaning tasks like dusting and vacuuming. Students or community members in need of volunteer hours should be sure to check in at the desk to sign in, so that their time can be documented.

The Tomhannock Reservoir provides drinking water to over 100,000 residents in Rensselaer and Albany Counties. Keeping inappropriate runoff from contaminating the reservoir is critical to maintaining the quality of our city’s drinking water. Last year, over 50 volunteers from the community collected over 100 garbage bags of debris and litter that had accumulated over the past year along the reservoir’s 17 miles of shoreline.

The Mr. and Mrs. Club of Sycaway for instance, was organized by a young, post-war generation whose circumstances differed from their parents; they came of age during and fought in World War II. The Fultonville Historian and Gravestone Expert will lead a walk through the cemetery, highlighting examples of gravestone problems from fallen stones to moss overgrowth, offering suggestions on repair and tips for safe restoration and care. This is not a hands-on program.

STEPS TO PROTECT VETERAN MEMORIALS The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a resolution at the April 12 legislative meeting calling for increased penalties for those caught defacing veteran memorials, along with moving forward on a local law to prevent protests from disrupting funerals of military service personnel.

The legislative action follows instances of disruptive protests at funerals for military service personnel killed while serving overseas and instances of damage to veteran memorials and monuments across the country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our nation owes a great debt to our veterans and their families and as a society, we need to protect the memorials to the outstanding service and sacrifice of these brave men and women,â&#x20AC;? said Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid.

The local law aimed at preventing disruptive protests in the county of funerals of military personnel is expected to be approved at the May 10 legislative meeting. The local law was introduced by the County Executive at the April 12 meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This law would protect families from some of the unfortunate scenes at recent military funerals in recent years. We also believe this protects the rights of everyone involved along with protecting the mourners,â&#x20AC;? said Legislator Thomas Walsh Sr., chairman of the Legislatureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Veterans Committee. Under the law, protests would be prohibited within 750 feet of a funeral site or procession one hour before and one hour following the funeral. The law follows a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that reasonable restrictions can be placed on protests near funerals. The law was suggested to counties by the New York State Association of Counties and other counties across the state are readying or approving legislation. The resolution urging the State Legislature to establish new penalties for defacing or damaging a veteran memorial or monument was passed unanimously at the April 12 meeting. Copies of the resolution will now be sent to representatives of Rensselaer County in the State Legislature. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There have been a number of instances across the country where memorials or monuments have been damaged or desecrated. Establishing new penalties for desecration of those important memorials can help protect them for future generations,â&#x20AC;? said Legislator Alex Shannon, a member of the Legislatureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Veterans Committee.

CAPITAL DISTRICT 4-H DAIRY BOWL CONTEST 4-H members from across the Capital District travelled to Hoosic Valley to participate in the Capital District 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest hosted by Rensselaer County Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Rensselaer County fielded a Novice, Junior and Senior Team.

Many thanks to our team coaches; Joyce Michel and Lisa Coluccio for the Novice, Carolyn Stannard-Carlo for the Junior and Tara Cottrell for the Senior Team. The Novice team placed 3rd and were led by Captain Alex Carlo, and members Isabella Wiley, Wyatt Coluccio and Brigham Logue. Individually, Wyatt placed 10th, Alex 9th and Brigham 3rd overall. The Junior Team placed 4th and was led by captain Patrick Michel and members Danielle Stannard, Abbie Tarbox and Seth Greene who placed 3rd individually overall. Our Senior Team which was led by Captain Courtney Luskin and members Marilyn Lamb, Samantha Carlo and Olivia Logue placed 4th . Individually, Olivia placed 4th overall and earned a seat on the District Senior Team to compete at the State 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest to be held at Cornell University later in the Spring. The Capital District Dairy Bowl event encompasses the 14 different counties that make up the greater Capital District Region of New York State.

TEAM SPARKLE RUNS FOR LITERACY Team Sparkle started as a way for a group of Rensselaer County residents to have fun and raise funds for a worthy cause.

Team member Kristin Morgan is a Literacy Volunteers tutor who has chaired fundraising events for Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County in the past. Last year she combined her love of running and her dedication to the cause of literacy by challenging friends and neighbors to compete in the 5K Literacy Run/Walk. The result was a 16-member team called Sparkle.

This year the team is gearing up once again for the 5K in Troy.

On Sunday, May 1, runners between the ages of 12 and 60something will be out in hot pink Sparkle tee shirts, showing their support for literacy programs in Rensselaer County. The goal this year is for all the team participants to be sponsored runners. Since runners usually rely on friends and neighbors for sponsorship, this is a way for Team Sparkle to cast the net a little wider. “We love the Literacy Run,” said Kristin Morgan.

“It’s a family event, and since it’s a run/walk, it means people of all ages and abilities can participate.”

Literacy Run/Walk is made possible by CAP COM Cares Foundation, IBT Global, Fox 23 News, E. Stewart Jones, Stewart’s Shops, Cohoes Savings Foundation, The Record, Aflac New York, Architecture +, Gettysburg Flag Works, and others.

PITTSTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOLDS EVENT The Canadian World War I Veteran, John Foster Babcock, will be featured in a video on Thursday, April 21st, at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock. Babcock died at the age of 109 on February 18, 2010. He became internationally known as the last surviving Canadian veteran of the First World War. He also served in the United States Army. FIFTH GRADE PARENTS’ NIGHT AT ALGONQUIN Algonquin’s Fifth Grade Parents’ Night is Thursday, May 26th, at 7:00pm. On May 14th , the process continues with participants sharing what they wrote and receiving feedback and additional suggestions. A TASTE OF BRITTONKILL The Brittonkill Educational Foundation, in its 16th year, will be hosting “A Taste of Brittonkill”. This event will be held at The Troy Country Club on Sunday, May 1, 2011, from 4-7pm. It will feature food and drink from local restaurants, raffle items and entertainment from Brittonkill students.

The Brittonkill Educational Foundation raises funds from the community for the purpose of providing innovative programs and projects to the students of the Brunswick Central School District, which are above and beyond the normal course curriculum and are unable to be funded through the district budget.

A “Taste of Brittonkill” will entail various restaurants donating and serving unique cuisine. We would like to invite your business to sponsor this event.
