Hope Lutheran Church (470 Winter Street Extension, North Greenbush) has a long history of collecting food for area food pantries, dating all the way back to when CoNSERNS-U was located in the basement of a building on First Street in Rensselaer.

The congregation realizes that the need for food pantries has grown over the years. We are reminded now that the Christmas season collections have ended, but the hungry are still with us. Hope LC jumps at any chance to create a special collection event.

Averill Park captures its 14th sectional title in its past 16 attempts

TROY — The first time the Averill Park girls’ basketball team claimed a Section II Class A championship in 2006, many of its current roster members either had just been born or were on the way. Throughout that span of time, the Warriors have continued to rack up title after title under the tutelage of the same coach who started the program’s winning ways.

Junior standout Taylor Holohan, who claimed the sectional Most Valuable Player last year when Averill Park went on to capture its second straight championship, earned the honor once again last Friday as she delivered 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a 61-49 title triumph over second-seeded Catholic

Central.

After the final horn sounded, the bench met the players on the floor at midcourt as if Averill Park won its first championship. That jubilation explains why the Warriors have been able to maintain their slot at the top of the Section II Class A hierarchy.

The win Friday was the 18th straight for Averill Park (21-2), ranked No. 2 in the state, and locked down the program’s 14th sectional title since 2006 in its past 16 chances. There was no sectional tournament in 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Warriors lost scholarship players Amelia Wood (Sacred Heart) and Michelina Lombardi (Le Moyne) for the 2022 state championship. This season’s team opened the season at 3-2 with losses to Saratoga Springs and Albany before beginning the winning streak.

“I think our team was kind of looked down on this season, but we worked hard,” Holohan said. “We lost two amazing players, who are on to bigger and better things. We worked and did what we need to do to improve and get where we needed to be. We’re going to keep working even harder to get even farther.”

“This was a very hard-fought game. I give Catholic High a lot of credit. They had a great game plan and played great defense,” Averill Park coach Sean Organ said. “We had to work for everything tonight. What I think about this team, I am not sure many people gave us a chance after graduating Michelina Lombardi and Amelia Wood from last year.”

All five starters for the Warriors took turns making an impact at both ends of the floor. Averill Park previously beat Amsterdam (6418) and Columbia (69-26) before dispatching

Predictions range from premature blooms to bears waking early

On the heels of an unseasonably warm winter with below-normal snowfall in many locations, experts are unsure of what lies ahead. But it would not be out of the question for the Hudson Valley to see a premature emergence of tick nymphs, frogs and flowers this spring, as well as some toxic algal blooms come summer — the kind that painted the Wallkill River a vibrant green last August, they say.

No matter what the groundhog said a month ago, this early spring

the Crusaders. The Warriors impressively shot 55.3 percent (21-for-38) from the field and limited the Crusaders to 30.9 percent accuracy (17-for-55).

CCHS (19-3), ranked No. 7 in the state, was attempting to win the program’s first sectional title since its 2020 team captured a state title led by coach Chris LaBombard and star player Aiga Bautre.

Holohan tallied 15 of her points in the first half as the Warriors built a 30-21 advantage. From there, teammates Bailee Lange (seven points) Tatiana Tune (10 points), Arianna Verardi (14 points, all-tournament selection) and Kayleigh Ahern (10 points) helped Averill Park maintain its advantage. After Holohon scored in the third quarter to make it 33-23, the deficit for the Crusaders never dipped below 10 points again.

Holohan said the second straight MVP award was significant to her.

“It shows that the hard work I have put in is paying off,” Holohan said.

CCHS sophomore star Tanavia Turpin fouled out with 4:59 remaining and the Crusaders trailing 49-36. She finished with a teamhigh 12 points and joined teammate El’ Dior Dobere (11 points) on the all-tournament team.

emergence isn’t just happening locally. All across the United States are reports of the most premature spring conditions on record. It’s difficult for scientists to make exact predictions about what will happen when the seasons change. And some of the effects may not be attributed to a single unusually mild winter.

“Any particular winter can see warm-ups and strange aberrations of 50 degrees in February for a short period,” said Matthew Schlesinger, chief zoologist at the Department of Environmental Conservation’s New York natural heritage program. “Populations have evolved with these changes. It’s the long-term patterns we are more concerned about.”

Not all species will react the same way.

“An extreme storm that wipes out one species might be something to shrug at for another,” he said. “It’s complicated. Wildlife doesn’t react as a bloc.”

‘Mismatches of timing’ among animals

Certain animals known to sleep through the winter, like bears, may come out of hibernation earlier. Some may migrate earlier. But don’t worry — bears coming out in the upcoming weeks is not a major concern, though they may have trouble finding food, Schlesinger said.

Defreestville Fire Department

March 2023 Update

March is National Women’s History Month and the Defreestville Fire Department proudly counts many brave, hardworking women among our ranks. Women like Lt. Kylie Cotugno, Eng. Emily Pirie, FF Rose Jokiel, and FF Sara Rothery; Chief’s Aide Bonny Mounteer; and Supporting members Marybeth Max, Jaime Vooris, and Pam Belschwinder.

Of course, this list would be incomplete without 20+ year member Dianne Westfall. We’re proud to count them among us, and thank them - as well as the spouses of our members, whom contribute their patience and time enabling our members to respond - for their dedication and service to the public safety mission of the DFD.

In fact, according to Women In Fire, “the first woman firefighter we know of was Molly Williams, who was a slave in New York City and became a member of Oceanus Engine Company #11 in about 1815.” Women in Fire continues, “[d]uring World War II, many women across the country entered the volunteer fire service to take the place of men who had been called into the military. Two military fire departments in Illinois were staffed entirely by women for part of the war.”

While more women are joining the fire service, one thing that hasn’t changed is the mission of responding to emergency calls for assistance and other service-related responses. In February, the DFD responded to a total of 23 calls, including one structure fire. That

What to know about having a bird as a pet

Pets make wonderful additions to a home and family. One of the best things about welcoming a new pet into a home is that no two pets are the same, which means pet owners will get an entirely unique experience each time they bring a new animal into their home.

Birds are among the most unique pets. Brightly colored feathers give pet birds their own distinctive look, but there’s more to birds than just vivid plumage. Individuals considering adopting or purchasing a pet bird can consider these needs and character traits commonly associated with birds so they have a good idea of what to expect.

• Birds have unique veterinary needs. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation notes that pet birds have special veterinary needs, and recognition of those needs can help prospective bird owners determine if a pet bird is for them. The Association of Avian Veterinarians (aav.org) can help individuals find an avian veterinarian in their area, and such professionals can discuss the unique veterinary needs of various bird species. Familiarity with those needs can ensure individuals pick the right bird for their lifestyles.

• Most pet birds are diurnal species. The AAV notes that most pet birds awake at dawn and settle in to sleep at dusk. Prospective bird owners should be comfortable with and willing and able to accommodate that sleep-wake cycle. If they can’t accommodate that, a pet bird could suffer as a result. The AAV reports that artificially long days resulting from household lights or televisions can cause sleep deprivation in birds and compromise the bird’s health. Before buying a pet bird, prospective owners should recognize that birds are generally best when they get between 10 and 12 hours of sleep per night.

• Birds need exercise. Pet birds live well in a cage, but that does not mean they don’t need exercise. The AAV notes that birds need exercise to maintain their cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The AVMA recommends choosing a cage that affords birds space to climb, walk around and fly. Some cages may restrict a bird’s ability to fly. In such instances, the AVMA urges bird owners to provide supervised access to an adequately sized exercise area outside of the cage. The AAV notes that bird owners should be conscious of the potential for trauma if exercise rooms feature ceiling fans, mirrors or windows, which birds can fly into. If possible, find a room where this risk is minimal. Provide access to the exercise room for several hours each day if the cage does not feature ample room for the bird to fly.

• Birds can be trained. Individuals may associate pet training with dogs, but birds, and their owners, can benefit from training, too. The AAV recommends reward-based training over punishment-based training and notes that some good resources for bird training include Goodbirdinc.com and the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (iaate.org.)

Birds make for wonderful pets. Recognition of their unique traits and needs can help prospective bird owners understand what bird ownership will be like.

Make your dog a better leash-walker

Walking a dog on a leash is required by law in many towns and cities. Leashing a dog prevents the animal from trespassing on neighbor’s property and keeps it from jumping on people or other animals.

A leashed dog can be restrained from sniffing the waste of other animals, which may help curb the spread of diseases like distemper or parvo. Leashing also can reduce the propensity for the dog to run away from an owner and get lost.

Despite the benefits of walking dogs on a leash, some dogs are not too keen on the idea. Puppies may acclimate to it over time, but circumstances can make any dog want to escape a leash. The following are some issues that may arise and how to remedy them.

Pulling

The vast assortment of collars and harnesses billed as “no pull” suggests the issue of dogs pulling on the leash is common. Dogs on leashes that are too long may be distracted and pull more readily. Start out with a short leash and only allow a longer slack when the dog has exhibited an ability to walk diligently on the shorter leash.

Rather than punish bad behavior like pulling, many dog trainers recommend rewarding the good behavior, such as walking without pulling at your side. This praise can be delivered verbally and with plenty of treats.

Lunging and leash reactivity

Dogs may behave differently on a leash than they do when off them. Most dogs who lunge at passersby or bark or snarl may actually crave the attention of other companions but not have the social skills to engage in a proper meet and greet, according to the American Kennel Club. Should the dog be off-leash, he or she may not behave in the same way.

Lunging and other behaviors may stem from aggression, but it’s more likely a cause of fear, says the AKC. It’s a mentality marked by an “I’ll get that thing before it gets me” outlook designed to make the feared person, dog or object go away. A leash also may cause frustration that the dog can’t get to a desired pet or person, and the animal loses emotional control.

A trainer can help owners learn to distract the dog on the leash from others with high quality treats. Strategies to remove leash tension also can cut down on leash reactivity.

Right equipment

Dog owners can experiment with gear to make leash-walking go more smoothly. Traditional collars may put too much pressure on a dog’s throat, particularly those who pull. A harness can be a better option. Gentle leaders are a type of head gear that enables pet owners to redirect their dogs more readily. Because they resemble muzzles, some owners may hesitate to use them despite their efficacy. Front clip harnesses and correctional collars might help as well. Consult with a veterinarian or trainer for the best options.

It pays to invest some time teaching dogs to walk calmly on leashes.

A Rundown on DIY Demos

Homeowners looking to make improvements to their homes likely want to make such projects as budget-friendly as possible. After soliciting estimates from contractors, homeowners may seek to do some work themselves in an effort to cut costs. That is why many individuals opt to handle demolition and other preparatory tasks before contractors get started. There are important things to keep in mind when doing demo.

• Prybars are your friend. These tools, sometimes called crowbars, can be used to remove nails or pull materials apart.

• Cover vents in the space where you’re working. Construction dust can be sucked into the HVAC system and cause furnaces to clog. This also may cause the distribution of dust throughout the home.

• Use safety gear. Always wear safety goggles, gloves,

boots, and other equipment as needed to remain safe.

• Get a power saw. Circular saws and reciprocating saws can cut through various materials, making faster work of demolition.

• Exercise caution when removing drywall. You don’t know what is behind the drywall, including electric wires, so be careful when choosing a spot to make the first hole in the drywall.

• Get a trash container with a gate. You’ll save yourself some aches and pains by being able to fill a wheelbarrow and dump in into the container, rather than having to toss debris over the top.

• Bust up heavy or bulky items. Cast iron tubs and shower surrounds can be heavy and difficult to move. Unless it’s a family heirloom, cut or break large items into pieces to remove them more easily.

Greenbush Historical Society

Please join the Greenbush Historical Society in celebrating Women’s History month on Sunday, March 12 , 2PM, at the East Greenbush Library.

Our speaker will be Barbara Urban – historian for the Illium Club which turned 100 years old last fall. The club was formed at a time when women’s opportunities were restricted by societal expectations. However, women across the country were hungry for socialization and self education in the early 20th century. The Illium Club brought to Troy just these things – an opportunity to get together, to be active in the community, and a way for women to further their education. Learn about this active group today on March 12 .

All GHS programs are free and open to the public but registration at the library is required. Please call 518 477 7476 to reserve a seat.

Join us, at Poestenkill Library at 6:00 on Thursday 3/16 as we welcome Roger Savoy, owner and President of Homebrew Emporium, to the library for a Basics of Home Brewing program.

During the program you’ll learn about basic

ingredients; malt, hops, water and yeast, the process of brewing with all grain or extracts, how fermentation works, how long it takes, and more! There will be samples of necessary ingredients and the basic equipment needed to begin brewing at home will be presented as well. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and contribute to the discussion throughout the evening. For more information please visit the library’s online events calendar at www.PoestenkillLibrary.org/calendar.

Attendees must be 21 years of age or older. Registration is not required, but would be appreciated. You can register by calling the library at 518-283-3721.

ters, early blooming plants can cause issues.

“Insects that rely on those plants might be timed wrong. Those kinds of mismatches of timing are what we worry about,” the zoologist said.

Reptiles and amphibians migrating too soon to breeding ponds risk getting caught in a cold snap, he said. That can set a population back, but it can rebound as long as the unusual weather doesn’t continue to occur year after year.

But among all the uncertainties, one thing is definite — outdoors enthusiasts will have to be on high alert for ticks. The warm weather means adult-stage ticks have been active all winter.

“They come out whenever it’s above 40 degrees and it’s been above 40 almost every month and almost every week all winter long,” said Richard Ostfeld, distinguished senior scientist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook. Ostfeld isn’t exactly predicting more ticks in the coming months, but the tiny, difficult-to-find nymphs that emerge in spring eager to find hosts will be here sooner than usual.

“We should get ready. Warm winter makes the dangerous period of the spring and early summer begin up to a couple of weeks earlier, based on over 20 years of monitoring when they appear,” Ostfeld said. Nymphs will come out in April and peak in May.

Toxic algae could bloom

Harmful algal blooms consist of a form of cyanobacteria capable of releasing toxins that can harm humans, pets and wildlife. They bloomed locally last summer, but there’s no guarantee they will return this year.

“I wish I had a crystal ball,” said Jessica Frost, the U.S. science director of BlueGreen Water Technologies, which makes products that treat algae. “We don’t have predictive models.”

Algal blooms are influenced by many factors, including weather, nutrient load, wind, sunlight, vegetation and rainfall.

“If you have intermittent rain without ice storms and you are 20 degrees above average, that is a recipe for a strong algal bloom season,” Frost said.

Dan Shapley, co-director of the science and patrol program and Riverkeeper Inc., said the weather between now and summer will have a greater influence on toxic algal blooms developing than what happened over the winter. When Shapley documented blooms last summer in the Wallkill River and Rondout Creek, as well as in lakes and the local water supply, he noticed people spending time near them.

“People don’t understand yet that the appearance of green sludgy water is something to avoid,” Shapley said. His advice for summer 2023: “Common sense. If the water doesn’t look clear or healthy or good, don’t let your dog swim, and don’t go swimming yourself. Choose a different place.”

The blooms don’t bode well for outdoor tourism, a major economic driver in the Hudson Valley during the spring and summer when visitors look for spots to swim, kayak, paddleboard or canoe. The toxic algae can also affect fish farms and crop irrigation.

Frost believes algal blooms will become more prevalent in the years ahead, so it’s a good idea to learn how to protect ourselves going forward.

“We knew summertime blooms were a thing,” she said. “Now it’s late spring, early fall, even winter.”

Protective gear for toxic algal blooms is similar to what you’d wear to shield yourself from ticks, except it needs to be waterproof, with long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. Masks can also help if you’re not going to wait until the water clears.

“If you’re cruising down the river and creating wave action, don’t leave your mouth open. And your dog doesn’t have to go on your boating expedition this time,” Frost said.

Water enthusiasts can check the conditions of harmful algal blooms on the DEC’s website. It’s not comprehensive and there can be a time lag as DEC relies on critical public reports. Widespread monitoring and testing haven’t become routine yet.

Tracking and reporting health symptoms associated with toxic algal blooms to medical doctors or the health department can help scientists. This spring, people who experience watery eyes, runny nose or skin irritation after being near water shouldn’t assume those symptoms are from seasonal allergies, Frost said.

If Hudson Valley residents document what they see and feel in the natural world, it helps scientists understand just how widespread changes are in the months following a notably warm winter. Tools like iNaturalist can help people chronicle their observations.

“Biology can be incredibly unpredictable,” Frost said. “We need data to make things predictable.”

RPA Speaker Series Presents Nurturing Our Roots: Nature Therapy and Mindfulness

Nurturing Our Roots: Nature Therapy and Mindfulness with Molly Freiberg Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 7pm on Zoom.

Do you have an early memory of a nature connection? Some have shared feeling joyous and free. Others say they’ve experienced curiosity and vitality.

Yet most admit losing that connection over the years. In times of high stress, loneliness, despair, and endless screen time, we can connect to the natural world for restoration and wellness.

Studies show that time in nature can reduce anxiety, depression, attentional difficulties, and loneliness. It can improve creativity, memory, and the immune system while restoring an embodied sense of awe.

Molly will share about present-centered, nature-based practices and how engaging in them can make positive physiological changes to our brains and benefit our mental and physical health. The talk will also cover Forest

Bathing, a Japanese wellness practice that welcomes us to take in the forest atmosphere with all of our senses.

Pre-registration is required. The suggested voluntary donation is $5, though any amount is welcome. Register on the RPA website on our events page!
