HILLSDALE — State officials on Thursday submitted a request to relocate a “rare and significant” Columbia County building from New York’s turnpike era 30 feet to protect it from traffic and road hazards.

The Columbia Turnpike East Tollhouse, on the north side of Route 23 in the town of Hillsdale, sits on a turnpike that was an overland route between western Massachusetts and the Hudson River that was active between 1799 and 1906. The wood-framed tollhouse was

built for the tollkeeper and, until 1906, was fronted by a tollgate that could be raised and lowered to restrict the movement of road traffic, according to a news release from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, and the request proposes moving the building to protect it.

The New York State Board for Historic Preservation reviewed and approved the new location as similar in character to the original site. The move, spearheaded by the Friends of East Gate, would include and retain the building’s original features, orientation and historic interrelationship with the road. If approved, the tollhouse would also come under the purview of the National Park Service. The update comes along with the board’s recommendation to add 13 properties to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Of those, the tollhouse was the only one in the Capital Region, though the list includes two sites in the Mid-Hudson Region: the Tioronda Estate-Craig House Historic District, a historic Gothic Revival house that sits on 69 acres in Beacon and the town of

River 64-38.

Such listings can assist owners in revitalizing properties, making them eligible for public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits, Hochul’s office said.

Once recommendations are approved by the commissioner, who serves as the state historic preservation officer, the properties are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and then nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, where they are reviewed and, once approved, entered on the National Register.

— Being named as the top player in the Suburban Council this season should have sent Averill Park junior forward Taylor Holohan into elation. Although pleased by the honor, Holohan’s biggest concern upon learning the news was what would be happening that day in practice.

“I could not have done any of it without the help of teammates and coach (Sean) Organ and all he has done for me,” Holohan said.

“This is true to her character: she was pleased and smiled after I pulled her into my classroom to tell her the news. That was it,” Organ said. “It was really nice and I know she worked hard to get to that point. It was not over the top. It was very modest. That is how she is. She wanted to talk about our practice.”

Holohan and the Warriors are still practicing and the standout forward continues to excel in the postseason after earning Suburban Council Player of the Year honors. She collected her second straight Section II Class A Tournament Most Valuable Player award after leading Averill Park to its ninth consecutive sectional title and 14th since 2006. “Taylor has really been good all season long,” Organ said. “What helps is if teams double or even triple down to crowd her, we have four other players on the floor that can score so there is a lot of unselfish play as Taylor will look to set her teammates up inside or outside.”

Averill Park (22-2), ranked No. 2 in the state, returns to the court Friday at Hudson Valley Community College to take on Section I champion Walter Panas (20-5) in the Class A state semifinals.

Last March, Holohan played an integral role in the Warriors securing the program’s second state championship with a 54-48 victory over Tappan Zee. Gone from that squad are Amelia Wood, the program’s alltime leading scorer who just helped lead Sacred Heart into the Division I NCAA Tournament, and Michelina Lombardi, who plays at Le Moyne College.

Now the lead component in Averill Park’s offense, Holohan’s versatility as a low-post player sets her apart. She is not only proficient scoring with either hand around the basket, she has the ability to connect from 3-point range and also is excellent in finding teammates with passes.

We hope the luck of the Irish is with you and yours on this upcoming St. Patrick’s Day. We are lucky to have dedicated employees working with us at Town Hall.

That includes our long-time employee Frank Giuliano who recently retired from the town after many years. Supervisor Joe Bott and Deputy Supervisor Kelly Hoffman attended Frank’s retirement party and recognized him for his lifetime of service to the town.

At our monthly town board meeting, the board reported on a rate increase passed on by the City of Troy who provides water to the town. Beginning April 1, 2023, residents will see the new rate of $5.28 per 1,000 gallons; for an average sized family this would amount to an estimated $50 per year increase for water usage.

The board approved an out of district water user agreement for a resident on Geiser Road whose property does not have an adequate water supply from an existing well. The cost will be paid by the resident. We are gearing up for Summer Camp and appointed our key staff to begin the process of getting activities ready!

The board considered a variance from Local Law #2 of 2022 in connection with a proposed project at 128-130 Main Ave where 5 residential apartments are proposed above first floor retail spaces. This was referred to the planning board for a recommendation.

Jack Rogers Reports to the Town of North Greenbush

Water rates will be increasing again in the Town of North Greenbush. The town contracts with the City of Troy for municipal drinking water. There will be a 11% increase in water rates per 1,000 gallons effective April 1, 2023. This will be an estimated increase of $50/year per household. The last water increase was January 1, 2022.

The Twin Town Regional Baseball League is Back for its Third Season!

Twin Town Little League is now offering a non-travel baseball league for players of all ability levels ages 17 - 25. This is a wood bat league open to anyone in the Capital District.

We will play a 10-game season running from May 30 - July 16, with games primarily at our Williams Road Complex. Games will be scheduled most Saturdays in addition to 4-5 weeknight games, typically Tuesday or Thursday. There will be no games over the July 4th weekend.

We will honor requests for friends to play together whenever possible and will consider allowing entire teams to register. Player-managers are allowed

The Town’s Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 1st.

Want to take a trip under the sea? Averill Park High School’s class of 2023 will be putting on the annual Mr. AP show.

Our 10 contestants will be competing head to head for the coveted title in a series of different categories. These include a talent portion where the contestants will attempt to win over the crowd with an engaging and fun act showcasing their best abilities.

As well as activity wear, career wear and formal wear, where the contestants, accompanied by their escorts, will showcase their current extracurriculars, future job

plans, and don their finest attire. Several dance segments featuring contestants, escorts, and committee members flaunting their best moves to some beachy tunes, filler acts, and videos showcasing the behind the scenes efforts of everyone involved in the show. It will be held in the High School auditorium at 6 PM as well as a tailgate event from 4-6 PM. Our blue and gold themed tailgate will feature music, cornhole, and food trucks all in the High School parking lot! Tickets for the show will cost $10 and the tailgate event is free to attend! Earth Day Poster Contest

Rensselaer County Legislative Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman has announced their Annual Earth Day Poster Contest! Earth Day is Saturday, April 22, 2023 and the theme this year is “Invest in our Planet.”

Members of the Legislative Majority encourage students who live in Rensselaer County to partic-

ipate in this fun activity while showing off their love for our planet. We will be accepting entries from students in grades K-6 until April 29t h.

One original art entry per student, not to exceed 22x30 inches. Posters can be mailed or dropped off to: Rensselaer County Environmental Management Council or Legislative Majority Office at: 99 Troy Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061.

Troy Scouts Hold Fundraising Breakfast at Pawling Avenue Methodist Church

TROY, NY -- The Scouts of Troy’s Troop 502 will hold their annual fundraising breakfast on Saturday, March 18, at the Pawling Avenue Methodist Church, located at 520 Pawling Avenue in Troy.

Doors open at 8 a.m. and the Scouts will be serving pancakes and bacon until 10:30 a.m.

Cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for kids ten and under.

Troop 502 provides Scouting for boys in the Troy and North Greenbush area.The Scouts of Troop 502 go camping, hiking, backpacking, canoeing and spend a week at summer camp.

Scouting teaches young men and women skills ranging from cooking to first aid, and also teaches citizenship, public speaking, and leadership. Scouts can earn over 130 merit badges in subjects ranging from electronics to kayaking.

Money earned at the breakfast will go to help underwrite the cost of Scouting activities.

How to Handle a Lengthy Renovation

The global pandemic reignited people’s passions for home renovations, as they directed dollars that would normally have been spent elsewhere into the places where they were now spending the most time — their homes. According to the 10th annual Houzz & Home survey of more than 70,000 respondents in the United States, higher-budget projects cost around $85,000 or more in 2020, compared with $80,000 in the two years prior. Kitchen projects were the most popular among renovating homeowners. Even though many COVID-19-related restrictions have lifted and life has largely returned to regular programming, renovations remain a popular investment. Homeowners embarking on home renovation projects understand that a certain measure of upheaval is to be expected, but some may not fully anticipate the impact that renovations have on daily life. The following are some tips for making it through a lengthy renovation.

• Discuss the timeline with contractors. It may be easier to make a plan for how much life will be disrupted if you have an idea of how long the renovation will be (if everything goes according to plan). Sit down with contractors and have them spell out the minutiae of the project so you’ll be able to anticipate what’s going on day-to-day.

• Start at the right time. Some contractors may say they can fit your project into their schedules in between other jobs. While this may seem convenient and timely, your work may be put on hold if there are delays with the other job or jobs. Instead, it may be better to hold off until the contractors can devote the bulk of their attention to your renovation.

• Recreate commonly used spaces elsewhere. A kitchen or a bathroom remodel often requires giving up spaces that are used throughout a typical day. Unless you have a spare full bathroom or kitchen, you’ll need to make due. Set a microwave, tabletop electric burner and a coffee pot on a folding table in the garage or utility room. Rent or purchase a small refrigerator where you can store a few necessities. Ask your contractor to set up a makeshift outdoor shower so you have a place to get clean when the bathroom is under construction.

• Pack up and cover. Remodeling one room may cause a trickle down effect on other areas. Dust from drywall sanding can infiltrate many rooms in the home. Pack and label boxes with items not immediately needed and store them in another area. Cover most things so a film of dust won’t form on them.

• Adjust your schedule. Sleeping in will be a thing of the past for the duration of the renovation, as may be working from a home office. Try to get out of the work zone as much as possible for new scenery and respites from the noises and smells.

Outdoor living spaces were prioritized during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when public gatherings were greatly limited and individuals were urged to stay home as much as possible.

Such demands have had a ripple effect on various industries, including home design. According to a survey conducted by the New Home Trends Institute in collaboration with Pro Builder, 58 percent of the more than 300 residential architects, designers and design-minded builders who participated said connection to the outdoors/ nature will be an important influence on their design choices in the years to come.

Stress poses a significant public health problem.

Though work is often cited as a primary cause of stress, in 2022 socioeconomic issues contributed to a spike in stress levels, which serves as proof that there’s no shortage of potential stressors.

According to the Stress in America Survey 2022 from

the American Psychological Association, 81 percent of respondents indicated they were stressed out due to issues affecting the supply chain. Inflation proved even more troubling, as 87 percent of participants in the survey indicated they were stressed out by the rising cost in living. That’s especially noteworthy, as it marked a

nearly 30 percent increase from the year prior.

Stress is more than an inconvenience. Though the APA notes the human body is well-equipped to handle stress in small doses, chronic stress poses an entirely different problem, affecting various parts of the body.

Musculoskeletal system

The APA reports that muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction to stress. However, muscle tension for long periods of time can trigger a host of problems, including tension-type headache and migraine headaches, which are each associated with chronic muscle tension in the shoulders, neck and head. The APA notes that work-related stress in particular has been linked to musculoskeletal pain in the lower back and upper extremities.

Respiratory system

Stress can present problems affecting the respiratory system as well. Shortness of breath and rapid breathing can occur when a person is feeling stress. Though the APA acknowledges this is often not a problem for people without respiratory disease, the group notes it can exacerbate breathing problems for people with preexisting respiratory conditions, including asthma and COPD.

Cardiovascular system

Chronic stress can contribute to long-term problems affecting the heart and blood vessels, which the APA notes are the two elements of the cardiovascular system that work together to provide nourishment and oxygen to the body’s organs. Chronic stress has many hallmarks, including a consistent and ongoing spike in heart rate. As a result, long-term ongoing stress increases a person’s risk for an assortment of cardiovascular problems, including hypertension, heart attack and stroke.

Gastrointestinal system

The APA notes that hundreds of millions of neurons in the gut are in constant communication with the brain. This is why feelings of nervousness or anxiety often produce the sensation of butterflies in the stomach. When a person is dealing with chronic stress, that can affect communication between the gut and brain, potentially leading to pain, bloating and other discomfort in the gut.

Volunteer gatherings such as hikes, movie nights, picnics, and more are scheduled throughout the year.

To honor St. Patrick’s Day, author Kevin O’Hara will present “A Berkshire Sampler,” reading selected short stories at the North Chatham Free Library on Sunday, March 19 at 3 pm. “I think she’s had a ton of experience being on varsity since being an eighth grader,” Lange said. “Taylor has really stepped up every game for us when we’ve needed her, and she continues to show that obviously on both sides of the floor.”

“Where we also saw growth is with her leadership,” Organ said. “She challenges her teammates, praising them when they do great things and challenges them when they need to be better. In many ways, she has become one of our vocal leaders while also leading by example. The way that she and Bailee have led this team has been excellent. She is a special player because she plays both sides of the ball.”

During the early stages of her sophomore season, Holohan scuffled as her scoring proved inconsistent and she often found herself in foul trouble. Once the calendar turned to 2022, her game really took off.

“She was trying to figure out where to fit in,” Organ said. “Between Michelina and Amelia, she was only a 10th grader trying to understand exactly what her role would be. Most of the offseason (with the NY Havoc), she played more on the perimeter and less on the interior. The other part of the transition was learning how to play more inside.

“As the season progressed, we saw enormous growth offensively. Where she really opened things up is with her ability to defend. She covered people’s mistakes, like if someone was beaten off the ball, she moved her feet and was excellent at blocking the ball in the air clean.”

When asked what aspect of her game she derives the most pleasure from, Holohan quickly stated defense with a particular fondness toward blocking shots.

“It is an energy-giver, I think, a lot more than offense,” Holohan said.

“I think teams get intimidated to be honest,” Lange said. “It is great to know that when an opportunity comes, she is going to block a shot.”

Holohan, who is averaging 18 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks, three assists and three steals per game while shooting 57.3 percent from the field, put in extra work to elevate her skills at the offensive end and also has an added source to tap into with her aunt being Maureen Holohan, who helped lead Troy to the 1989 Class A state title as a junior. She went on to earn All-Big Ten honors playing at Northwestern, played professionally overseas and later became a published author.

“She lives down in New York City, so I don’t see her as much as I want to, but I like that she made history and I am going to make my own history,” Holohan said.

“I know she is super proud of Taylor and tells her some things that will help her,” Organ said. “I have learned a lot about her aunt through people that know her and saw her play. It is interesting to me that years later, Taylor is playing really well and still has better days in front of her, for sure.

“I think Taylor sees a great opportunity in front of us. No team in Averill Park has ever been able to go backto-back. I think she and her teammates are very much driven by that.”

East Greenbush CSD Approves Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Poperty Tax Exemption

The East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Property Tax Exemption at a public meeting on February 27. The board voted following public comments at the meeting.

The tax exemption will provide a 10% property tax exemption of assessed value for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers with at least two years of service. The property tax exemption becomes permanent after 20 years of service.

Additionally, the exemption will continue for the surviving spouse of a volunteer who is killed in the line of duty with five years of service.

The resolution shall take effect immediately for the 2023-24 school tax year.

The tax exemption was made available through state legislation that was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on December 9, 2022.

opens March 17th! Averill Park Road Runners is a club for anyone ages 7-14 who enjoys running, jumping, throwing and having

FUN! Events include sprints, distance running, long jump, high jump, shot put and turbo javelin. AP School District

residency is NOT required.

Practices at AP High School Monday and Thursday evenings and some optional Saturday mornings. Several meets throughout the season, from April 17th through the USATF Junior Olympics and Regionals in June and July.

Brunswick Historical Society Presents “The Gilded Age”

Kathryn Sheehan, Rensselaer County & Troy City Historian will present an illustrated lecture on how Troy’s 19th century architecture became an integral backdrop to the Julian Fellows HBO series “The Gilded Age”. Kathryn worked with the location scouts and production designer on locations throughout the city as well as providing information on how Troy appeared during the Gilded Age, who the major players were in the city at the time that represented “old” money and “new” money. Kathryn will also share some of the behind the scenes stories that happened during the filming for season one. This program will be held at the Brunswick Community Center on March 18, 2023 at 1PM.
