Averill Park was looking for second straight state crown

TROY

— The introductions had been made and the huge throng of fans supporting the Averill Park girls’ basketball team, some wearing the school’s blue and gold colors and others sporting green for St. Patrick’s Day, already were in full voice. Once the game began last Friday afternoon, the speedy and proficient play from Section I champion Walter Panas, a first-time sectional champion, denied the Warriors’ fans a chance to stay loud as the Panthers looked more comfortable than the program that captured the 2022 Class A state championship.

For nearly 26 minutes, the game completely belonged to the Panthers.

Averill Park displayed the mettle of a champion by refusing to go quietly and, led by a trio of 3-pointers from sophomore

Soumya Boutin grew up in a home with dirt floors. Her father worked multiple jobs. School was unpleasant. At times, the classroom scared her. In her small village in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, girls stopped attending school and were married around the time they turned 13. The teens had children shortly thereafter.

Soumya, who is now a senior at Emma Willard School, was able to escape that life and move to America — thanks to a chance meeting

guard Kayleigh Ahern, reduced a monster deficit to four points with 1:33 left.

Although Walter Panas did not make a basket over the game’s final six minutes, it built just enough of a cushion to stave off the Warriors and post a 47-42 victory at Hudson Valley Community College. The Panthers will play in the state final Saturday night vs. Canandaigua Academy.

“We have been hoping for this our whole season. We are really excited,” said Walter Panas sophomore guard Cadence Nicholas, who scored 17 points and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau during the victory.

The Warriors (22-3), looking for a second straight state title and third in program history, saw their 19-game winning streak snapped. Averill Park nearly completed a miraculous comeback after scoring four points through 11 minutes against the Panthers’ trapping tactics.

“Their speed and their aggression were at the top of our list of concerns,” Averill Park coach Sean Organ said. “For the better of two and an half to three quarters, it took us a while to adjust.”

Ahern’s third 3-pointer in the fourth quarter trimmed a 44-29 deficit to 44-40 with 93 seconds remaining. Organ called a timeout, the Warriors’ fans erupted in approval and standout junior forward Taylor Holohan thought the Warriors were going to win.

“I did,” said Holohan, who finished teamhigh totals of 19 points (8-for-11 shooting), nine

So far, fundraising has been done solely through word-ofmouth and the website, but the organization is looking to host events later this year. She’s been invited to share her story and speak about the nonprofit at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College during its lecture series in April.

rebounds and five blocked shots. “(Ahern) is going to be an amazing player. She is an amazing player.”

The Warriors made just 1 of 6 shots down the stretch and the Panthers (21-6) held on by making 3 of 9 free throws after Kiara Williams’ banked 3-pointer put Walter Panas ahead by 15 points.

“We finally figured some things out at the end of the third quarter and Kayleigh Ahern hit some big shots in the fourth quarter to get us back in the game,” Organ said. “We just missed a few shots at the end. That is the way it goes.”

Averill Park senior guard Bailee Lange made a basket four seconds into the game, but the Warriors watched Holohan pick up two quick fouls, missed the other five shots of the quarter and recorded 10 of the 23 turnovers they committed during the first eight minutes.

“Their guards were quicker than anyone we’ve played,” Lange said. “We came in feeling prepared and confident, but everything went

“Something I really enjoyed at school (in the U.S.) was the way the teachers treated you like a human,” she said.

Sadly, in the mountains, we don’t — laws that are in place, they are not really in practice and teachers would abuse children.

“You would get hit if you got an answer wrong. So you would naturally not want to go to school and every day you would dread it.”

Here, said the Emma Willard student, she can have and express her opinion. She can talk with her

friends without a teacher hitting her because she spoke while the

Back By Popular Demand the Rensselaer County Senior Center will be hosting a number of informational sessions on Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy, Wills, Trusts and so much more.

Just an over the counter drug can affect you in a negative way and put into question your cognitive ability. Our esteemed Director in Schodack Barb Fausner had a terrible experience with Benadryl “She took a trip and never left the farm”. She’d be willing to share her experience with you.

Don’t let someone else decide your last years of life. Take care of your business while there is no question of your ability. Glendora

Vegeterian Club

Good news everybody: some new vegan products are coming from two big companies! Kraft has unveiled a vegan version of their iconic Philadelphia cream cheese that will hit stores any day now. And Hershey’s - a name synonymous with sweets - is set to release a plant-based versions of their classic peanut butter cup and chocolate bar with almonds. And soon shoppers in the UK will be able to purchase Burger King Whopper-flavored Doritos that happen to be completely free of animal products! Plant-based is

winning! What is a vegan? A vegan practices equality with animals. We don’t have dominion over animals, we have stewardship.

Jokes:

A man, angry at the city editor of the newspaper, said, “You put me in the obituary column, and I’m still alive.”

The city editor was truly contrite and said, “Tomorrow I’ll put you in the birth announcements.”

If you get chilly, go stand in the corner; its 90 degrees!

Medicaid made me have a physical with a doctor. What was the first thing the doctor said to Glendora? “I like your hat.” This was the best medicine he could have given me, better than any pill or any injection.

Have you heard about the Czech trampoline team? They call themselves The Bouncing Czechs!

The college declined an invitation to the Sugar

Bowl because the quarterback had diabetes. People would pay more attention to the Electoral College if they had a football team.

Affordable Connectivity Program

Did you you the federal government can help some of us with broadband costs?

“The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more” [https://www.fcc.gov/acp].

Households have to meet at least one of the criteria listed on the FCC website, but there are multiple options including if you participate in veterans pension or survivor benefits.

I learned about this program from “Talk of the Towns” a magazine about towns from the Association of Towns and I wanted to share that information. There are many government programs, we should when we find them.

North Greenbush Town Board Poised to Grant Moratorium Exception to Political Supporter

The ink is barely dry on the North Greenbush moratorium on multi -family housing (apartments, condominiums and townhomes) and the town board already has its first applicant for a variance.

The board sought the moratorium late last year when it decided to take a closer look at the comprehensive land use plan which it has continuously ignored since its implementation in 2009.

The applicant for the variance, a town resident actively involved with several recent projects in town including the new hardware store, professed ignorance of the moratorium. He proposes to construct a mixed use

project containing retail and apartments in Wynantskill. He also is a supporter of the town Republican party and displayed candidate signs for the Town Board member in the last election on the exact same site where his project is proposed! It was not surprising that instead of following the moratorium and shutting down the proposal, the supervisor stated that the project was consistent with development in the hamlet and voted to send him to the planning board for approval.

Business as usual in North Greenbush where payto-play political favoritism rules the day. Now that the board has shown itself open to bypassing the moratorium, we can expect more variance applications from their supporters. Let’s see if corruption continues to win out over the rule of law in North Greenbush.

awry.” Holohan checked out with her second foul with the Warriors trailing 11-2. The junior standout, the Suburban Council’s Player of the Year, returned to action with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter as Walter Panas led 21-4. She proceeded to score 11 points, including every point in a 9-0 run, as Averill Park trimmed its deficit to 26-17 at intermission.

Last year in the state semifinals and final, Organ sat starters with two fouls for the rest of the half. Friday, the veteran coach knew he did not have that luxury this time where Holohan was concerned.

“We had no choice,” Organ said. “The concern was do we put in her in again and risk her getting three. It just got to the point where we were struggling on offense and their defense was getting run outs. We needed her back in the game.”

By the time Ahern made her second 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 44-37, the volume from the crowd, coupled with Averill Park’s raised level of play, rattled the Panthers.

“It was loud. I couldn’t hear what people were saying,” Lange said. “We got real close.”

“We accomplished a lot this year,” Holohan said. “We didn’t get done what we wanted to get done, but we did what nobody thought we could do after losing (Amelia Wood and Michelina Lombardi to graduation).”

teacher was lecturing.

Soumya’s life changed when she 5. She was playing outside with her younger brother, Mohammed, who was born with a genetic foot condition. He struggled to walk and she took care of him.

Dr. Pier Boutin, a Massachusetts-based orthopedic surgeon, was visiting Soumya’s village with a friend. Boutin saw the children playing. Due to her line of work, Mohammed’s condition caught the orthopedist’s attention.

This chance meeting was the start of a deep and life-changing relationship that would bond the two families permanently.

With Boutin’s assistance, Mohammed and his father made several trips to the U.S. to surgically repair the boy’s feet. He is now a teenager and can walk without difficulty. The relationship also led Boutin — who wrote a book about the experience, called “The Little Mo Effect” — to adopt Soumya. During the process, Soumya’s village teacher pulled Boutin aside and said “she’s not very smart, not like her brother.”

The high school senior is now a U.S. citizen who excels academically at the private, all-girls boarding and day school in Troy.

“When she came here, she adapted really quickly,” said Boutin, who helped Soumya get caught up to her grade level by doing extra schoolwork at home. Math, she said, was the toughest. But they did it.

Soumya is still in touch with her family in Morocco, speaking with her parents and siblings several times a week. The conditions in her village have not changed in the five years since Soumya has been gone, and she wants to help break that cycle.

Boutin shares the story of Soumya’s cousin, Mouna. Mouna was the one person the village thought would make it through high school, Boutin said. Mouna was focused on school. She was bright and independent. Sometimes she didn’t wear her hijab. And then Soumya learned that Mouna dropped out of school and got married. The culture pulled her out, Boutin said.

“Soumya was devastated,” Boutin said. That made it imperative “to really, really make a difference.”

Girls in Soumya’s village marry as teens because they have no other choice.

Leaving school at a young age means the girls have no marketable skills and cannot survive on their own. Families marry their daughters off believing it is what’s best for their children in a community that is deeply impoverished.

“They know she can’t exist by herself,” said Soumya, whose birth mother was married at 13 and had her first child at 15. “She needs it to be able to afford food.”

Soumya knows breaking cycles steeped in traditions more than a century old is not easy. But, with the help of her nonprofit’s board of trustees, her mom, friends and staff at Emma Willard, she’s giving it a try.

The idea of Soumya’s Journey came about when Soumya was about 13 and in the car with Boutin talking about former classmates who were recently married.

“I would think ‘I don’t know what to do about this,’” Soumya said. “And I was heartbroken about it.”

Building a school has the potential to be the most effective solution, Soumya said. It’s a critical step in breaking the cycle.

But give these girls a continuing education — one that focuses on math, science and language, as well as trades — and they become less dependent on others.

Soumya envisions a school that teaches coding and cosmetology, as well as other trades.

“So the second they get out of there — they graduate — they can start their own businesses,” she said.

In addition to helping the young women, it would also help the economy of the village.

And, she said, if girls could stay in school until they are 18, they wouldn’t need to be married.

“What Soumya is doing is impressive and amazing,” said Xavier McKinzie, who works in college counseling as Soumya’s adviser at Emma Willard. “We have had multiple conversations where I tell her that I am probably going to audit the classes she teaches in the future. … It’s at the point where I won’t be surprised at the strides that she will go to.”
