— The introductions had been made and the huge throng of fans supporting the Averill Park girls’ basketball team, some wearing the school’s blue and gold colors and others sporting green for St. Patrick’s Day, already were in full voice. Once the game began last Friday afternoon, the speedy and proficient play from Section I champion Walter Panas, a first-time sectional champion, denied the Warriors’ fans a chance to stay loud as the Panthers looked more comfortable than the program that captured the 2022 Class A state championship.

For nearly 26 minutes, the game completely belonged to the Panthers.

Soumya Boutin grew up in a home with dirt floors. Her father worked multiple jobs. School was unpleasant. At times, the classroom scared her. In her small village in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, girls stopped attending school and were married around the time they turned 13. The teens had children shortly thereafter.

Soumya, who is now a senior at Emma Willard School, was able to escape that life and move to America — thanks to a chance meeting

Although Walter Panas did not make a basket over the game’s final six minutes, it built just enough of a cushion to stave off the Warriors and post a 47-42 victory at Hudson Valley Community College. The Panthers will play in the state final Saturday night vs. Canandaigua Academy.

“We have been hoping for this our whole season. We are really excited,” said Walter Panas sophomore guard Cadence Nicholas, who scored 17 points and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau during the victory.

The Warriors (22-3), looking for a second straight state title and third in program history, saw their 19-game winning streak snapped. Averill Park nearly completed a miraculous comeback after scoring four points through 11 minutes against the Panthers’ trapping tactics.

“Their speed and their aggression were at the top of our list of concerns,” Averill Park coach Sean Organ said. “For the better of two and an half to three quarters, it took us a while to adjust.”

Ahern’s third 3-pointer in the fourth quarter trimmed a 44-29 deficit to 44-40 with 93 seconds remaining. Organ called a timeout, the Warriors’ fans erupted in approval and standout junior forward Taylor Holohan thought the Warriors were going to win.

City of Troy – Lead Service Line Replacement - The Democratic Minority sponsored legislation (Resolution P/121/23), calling on Governor Kathy Hochul and our NYS lawmakers to release available grant moneys from the Clean Water Infrastructure Act to the City of Troy. These state funds, which can be earmarked for lead service line replacement, must be immediately directed to Troy for the purpose of replacing the City’s dangerous lead service lines and ending the public health crisis. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the legislature.

Algonquin Middle School recognized 121 students who earned the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, the nation’s highest honor for middle school students. To qualify, students must have a 90% or higher average from the previous school year and achieve at the highest level on a NYS Assessment. Great job, everyone!

Both Algonquin Middle School and Poestenkill Elementary School held their Kids Heart Challenges recently. AMS raised $6,000 for the American Heart Association and PES raised $9,000. Way to go, everyone!

The District is offering a full-day Pre-Kindergarten program once again this year, funded by a New York State grant. This year, there are 47 spots available, up from 18 last year. Community Caregivers, a nonprofit agency, has continued to expand in Rensselaer County! We have over 50 clients but not enough volunteers to serve all of these nice people. Are you looking to help someone in your community remain living independently with a little assistance from you? We need your help! Our volunteers can take someone to the doctors, grocery or other errands as well as visiting and calling. We have a simple orientation process.

The Arthur G. Ferguson Scholarship

The Averill Park Sand Lake Fire Department has established The Chief Arthur G. Ferguson Scholarship to honor his years of service to our community.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide support to a graduating senior of the Averill Park High School who has displayed a commitment to their community through service as a firefighter or EMT; or is pursuing a career as a firefighter, or in the field of emergency medicine (Paramedic or EMT).

The scholarship may be awarded annually to a graduating Averill Park High School senior who meets one of the following criteria: a graduating senior who is pursuing a career as a firefighter or in the field of emergency medicine (Paramedic or EMT); or a graduating senior who has no less than one year as an active member in good standing of a volunteer fire department or ambulance service.

The scholarship will be a one-time award of $250

May & June Field Hockey

CAPITAL DISTRICTCapitalland Field Hockey will be running a MAY & JUNE field hockey program for players in graders K – 12 grades. Players can chose to play on Tuesdays night, Sunday afternoons or BOTH. All programs will start on May 16 and end on June 25. Each group will play for an hour and a half each day/night.

Levels include: a K-3 learn to play program; girls instructional programs for beginner & novice players grades 3 - 10, an advanced program for players in graders 6 –9 and one for 10 - 12 who want to refine their game while being introduced to more advanced techniques. at Grafton Lakes State Park

Grafton Lakes State Park will host a Volunteer Open House on Sun., March 26th at the Welcome Center. Do you love the park? Have you been coming to the park for years and would love to help keep the park beautiful? Are you new in town and are looking for a great community? Whatever your reason, the park could use your help! The informative session will take place from 2pm-4pm on March 26th.

Grafton Lakes has a growing volunteer base. Volunteers can get involved in a range of activities with varying

level of commitments. At this session, visitors will talk to the Trail Crew Leader, the Volunteer Gardener, the Friends Group, volunteer education assistants, and others about their experiences and why they love volunteering at the park.

From gardening to a welcome center greeter, to being a volunteer Fire Tower Steward, to a program assistant, to helping with trail work- if you have a passion for something in the park, we can work together to utilize your skills to make the park a better place. No commitment required to attend. Volunteers earn benefits such as program and boat passes the more hours they serve. Volunteer gatherings such as hikes, movie nights, picnics, and more are scheduled throughout the year.

Hopes Kitchen Free Community Dinner

Did you you the federal government can help some of us with broadband costs?

“The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more” [https://www.fcc.gov/acp].

Households have to meet at least one of the criteria listed on the FCC website, but there are multiple options including if you participate in veterans pension or survivor benefits.

I learned about this program from “Talk of the Towns” a magazine about towns from the Association of Towns and I wanted to share that information. There are many government programs, we should when we find them.

North Greenbush Town Board Poised to Grant Moratorium Exception to Political Supporter

The ink is barely dry on the North Greenbush moratorium on multi -family housing (apartments, condominiums and townhomes) and the town board already has its first applicant for a variance.

The board sought the moratorium late last year when it decided to take a closer look at the comprehensive land use plan which it has continuously ignored since its implementation in 2009.

The applicant for the variance, a town resident actively involved with several recent projects in town including the new hardware store, professed ignorance of the moratorium. He proposes to construct a mixed use

project containing retail and apartments in Wynantskill. He also is a supporter of the town Republican party and displayed candidate signs for the Town Board member in the last election on the exact same site where his project is proposed! It was not surprising that instead of following the moratorium and shutting down the proposal, the supervisor stated that the project was consistent with development in the hamlet and voted to send him to the planning board for approval.

Business as usual in North Greenbush where payto-play political favoritism rules the day. Now that the board has shown itself open to bypassing the moratorium, we can expect more variance applications from their supporters. Let’s see if corruption continues to win out over the rule of law in North Greenbush.

Electronics Recycling Day

The Rensselaer County Legislature and Environmental Management Council announce their annual Electronics Recycling Day event on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Rensselaer County Office Building, 1600 7th Avenue in Troy.

Please enter the parking lot from Congress Street. Soumya’s life changed when she 5. She was playing outside with her younger brother, Mohammed, who was born with a genetic foot condition. He struggled to walk and she took care of him.

Dr. Pier Boutin, a Massachusetts-based orthopedic surgeon, was visiting Soumya’s village with a friend. Boutin saw the children playing. Due to her line of work, Mohammed’s condition caught the orthopedist’s attention.

This chance meeting was the start of a deep and life-changing relationship that would bond the two families permanently.

With Boutin’s assistance, Mohammed and his father made several trips to the U.S. to surgically repair the boy’s feet. He is now a teenager and can walk without difficulty. The relationship also led Boutin — who wrote a book about the experience, called “The Little Mo Effect” — to adopt Soumya. During the process, Soumya’s village teacher pulled Boutin aside and said “she’s not very smart, not like her brother.”

The high school senior is now a U.S. citizen who excels academically at the private, all-girls boarding and day school in Troy.

“When she came here, she adapted really quickly,” said Boutin, who helped Soumya get caught up to her grade level by doing extra schoolwork at home. Math, she said, was the toughest. But they did it.

Soumya is still in touch with her family in Morocco, speaking with her parents and siblings several times a week. The conditions in her village have not changed in the five years since Soumya has been gone, and she wants to help break that cycle.

Boutin shares the story of Soumya’s cousin, Mouna. Mouna was the one person the village thought would make it through high school, Boutin said. Mouna was focused on school. She was bright and independent. Sometimes she didn’t wear her hijab. And then Soumya learned that Mouna dropped out of school and got married. The culture pulled her out, Boutin said.

“Soumya was devastated,” Boutin said. That made it imperative “to really, really make a difference.”

Girls in Soumya’s village marry as teens because they have no other choice.

Leaving school at a young age means the girls have no marketable skills and cannot survive on their own. Families marry their daughters off believing it is what’s best for their children in a community that is deeply impoverished.

“They know she can’t exist by herself,” said Soumya, whose birth mother was married at 13 and had her first child at 15. “She needs it to be able to afford food.”

Soumya knows breaking cycles steeped in traditions more than a century old is not easy. But, with the help of her nonprofit’s board of trustees, her mom, friends and staff at Emma Willard, she’s giving it a try.

The idea of Soumya’s Journey came about when Soumya was about 13 and in the car with Boutin talking about former classmates who were recently married.

“I would think ‘I don’t know what to do about this,’” Soumya said. “And I was heartbroken about it.”

Building a school has the potential to be the most effective solution, Soumya said. It’s a critical step in breaking the cycle.

But give these girls a continuing education — one that focuses on math, science and language, as well as trades — and they become less dependent on others.

Soumya envisions a school that teaches coding and cosmetology, as well as other trades.

“So the second they get out of there — they graduate — they can start their own businesses,” she said.

In addition to helping the young women, it would also help the economy of the village.

And, she said, if girls could stay in school until they are 18, they wouldn’t need to be married.

“What Soumya is doing is impressive and amazing,” said Xavier McKinzie, who works in college counseling as Soumya’s adviser at Emma Willard. “We have had multiple conversations where I tell her that I am probably going to audit the classes she teaches in the future. … It’s at the point where I won’t be surprised at the strides that she will go to.”
