What does a day of remembrance mean? How can we make it meaningful? Join us on Thursday, April 13th, at 6:30 pm at the East Greenbush Community Library for an evening of learning and remembrance.

Registration is required.

This year, International Holocaust Remembrance Day fell on January 27. The Israeli/Jewish commemoration, called Yom HaShoah, starts on April 17 (the 27th of the Hebrew month of Nisan). Shoah is the Hebrew word for “catastrophe,” while Holocaust is Greek for “sacrifice by fire.” Both terms – and both memorials – struggle to capture the tragedy of the past as we grapple with its meaning in the present.

East Greenbush cites safety in effort to slow motorists

EAST GREENBUSH — The town plans to put the brakes on drivers by dropping the speed limit on town roads to 25 mph from the current 30 mph.

Concern about speeding on the town’s 304 streets is one of the main reasons for the proposal, according to information collected by the town and an engineering study required to make the drop.

“We have received complaints about speeding in every neighborhood in East Greenbush,” Supervisor Jack Conway said Monday.

The move to reduce the speed limit over most of the 85 miles of roads in the 24-square-mile town is to let drivers know the town is serious about curtailing speeding.

The move to reduce the speed limit over most of the roads in East Greenbush is to let drivers know the town is serious about curtailing speeding. “We want to send a message. Slow down in the town of East Greenbush,” Supervisor Jack Conway said.

“We want to send a message: Slow down in the town of East Greenbush,” Conway said.

In the Hampton Manor neighborhood, some residents said setting the 25 mph speed limit is a good move.

“I appreciate the effort,” said Gideon Weinstein of Madison Avenue.

ALBANY — Websites and obsessive fans following the current taping of the 20th season of the ABC dating competition series “The Bachelorette,” have listed one suitor whose name will be of note to Capital Region residents — Sean McLaughlin is a son of Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

Sean McLaughlin — who says he is a Florida resident — was given a shoutout Wednesday by the man who is considered the preeminent spoiler of “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” taping secrets, Reality Steve, who has a website and podcast. He posted photos and video clips reporting Sean McLaughlin won a competition during a group date in California this week by singing a song, and then got some brief alone time with this season’s bachelorette, Charity Lawson.

McLaughlin also has been named on a few fan sites as one of the men on the upcoming season, expected to premiere June 26. ABC has

He said he didn’t know if the lower limit would inspire drivers to slow down.

Lindsay Sutton of New York Avenue said speeding has to be curtailed to protect children, pedestrians, dog walkers and other drivers.

A state law allowing municipalities to go to a 25 mph speed limit was approved in August. The cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy began studying whether to lower their speed limits after the law took effect last year.

The East Greenbush Town Board is considering enactment of the 25 mph limit at its April 19 meeting, Conway said. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 12 at Town Hall.

The town will have to erect 175 signs with the new speed limit, at a cost of $50 apiece. Overall, it will cost $8,750. The town has most of the signs on-hand, so work installing can begin immediately when the local law is adopted.

The law would take effect May 1 under the proposed legislation. Conway estimated it would take about six weeks to replace the 30 mph signs.

not released the list of contestants yet.

The clip of McLaughlin posted online featured a “Barbie Sing Off” competition, likely timed to promote “Barbie,” a movie based on the iconic doll that is coming out in July around the same time the episode is expected to air. Reality Steve said that episode will air July 10. The county executive is following Reality Steve on Twitter.

If Sean McLaughlin is on a group date, it means at the very least he made it past the first night of the show, which sees 30 men vying for the bachelorette’s affections at a mansion near Los Angeles. Producers largely keep contestants away from phones and computers during taping; McLaughlin’s cellphone went directly to voicemail when the Times Union reached out Thursday.

“Each guy had to dress up in a funky costume and sing ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun,’ but set to their own lyrics they made up,” Reality Steve wrote on his website. “Sean Mc-

Laughlin ended up winning the date, as judged by (former bachelorette and her husband JoJo and Jordan) and Charity. He got 1-on-1 time with her after the show as they got to walk on the pier and talk there by themselves. Rensselaer County 4-H Horse Communications

Rensselaer County recently hosted 4-H youth for 4-H Horse Communications. Members were able to share and present on an equine topic of their choice to adult and teen evaluators.

Many thanks to our evaluators: Grace Huffam, Emilee Roadcap, Kira Colarossi, Mikayla Malenfant, Kelli Grab, Brandon DeShane, Katie Navarra, Regina Cristo, Glenn and Eileen Van Oort. It was a successful night which resulted in the following members receiving “Exceptional Presenter” designation, Ava Severance, Lily Coraldi, Kaylie Millar, Emilee Roadcap, Thomas and Carlo Colarossi. There were eight presenters that qualified to represent Rensselaer County at the Regional 4-H Horse Communications Contest: Ava Severance of Schaghticoke, Kaylie Millar of West Sand Lake, Emilee Roadcap of Troy, MacKenzie Martin of Valley Falls, Mya Bull of Troy, Niko, Thomas and Kira Colarossi of Melrose. We wish our members luck as they move on to participate in the Regional 4-H Horse Communications event. Poestenkill Update from Councilmember Wohlleber

The Town Board unanimously passed a local law providing tax exemption on real property for senior citizens, and another local law providing tax exemption based on the owners volunteer membership in the Poestenkill Fire Company.

Several residents had questions about the proposed dog kennel at Waste Management on Route 66. The likely next step will be the consideration of the PDD status and this will continue to be a topic of discussion at future Town Board meetings.

The Town Board is reviewing proposals to repair the roof at Town Hall as well as potential work at the front entrance of the building.

The Town Board is also considering options to update/upgrade street lights in town, the majority of which are in the hamlet with a several also on Plank Road towards East Poestenkill. This will continue to be a topic of discussion at future Town Board meetings.

The Town Board is considering the purchase of a F2690 Kubota Tractor to remove snow on sidewalks in the hamlet. The cost of the tractor would exceed $40,000.

A public hearing will be held at the April Town Board meeting to consider amending the requirement for all new roads constructed in town, to be 24 feet wide.

The next Town Board Meeting will be Thursday, April 13 at 7pm.

“Let’s Make the Pandemic History!”

On April 11th the Sand Lake Historical Society program will present “Pandemic Remembrances”, the result of a special project to document our shared history of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Late last year, a special committee began soliciting and reviewing submissions by town residents on their experiences during the recent pandemic – what it was like for themselves, their families, at work, and in the community. And the roller-coaster of emotions. Even if you not able to submit your story, please come and listen to others and share what you did and how you felt. Our goal is to compile our stories into a book.

The program will take place on Tuesday April 11th at 7PM at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY 66, Averill Park. SLHS monthly pro-

grams are open to the public and are live-streamed on the SLHS website -- http://sandlakehistory. org (archived video also will be posted there). A $5 donation is suggested for non-members. New members are always welcomed. Like us on Facebook. SLHS turns Fifty in 2024!

Factors That Can Delay Your Renovation

Homeowners who decide to renovate one or more rooms in their homes may be excited about the changes that are in store. Even simple modifications to paint color or accessories can change the look of a space. Larger renovations can produce even more dramatic effects. When contractors provide cost estimates, they may

predict how long they expect the job to take from start to finish. It is impossible to plan for every scenario, however. Jobs may be delayed for various reasons, and it’s rarely the fault of the contractor. Here are some reasons a renovation could experience snags along the way.

• Preexisting conditions: Opening up walls or removing flooring could reveal hidden problems. These include prior insect damage, leaks and water issues, asbestos, mold, or even pests. The presence of unforeseen issues will require remediation that can extend the project timeline.

• Schedule backup: Contractors often have busy schedules. When one job experiences delays, that causes a domino effect on others on the calendar. Homeowners should realize that the estimated start date of their own project is just an estimate and not necessarily set in stone.

• Lack of materials: Builders sometimes have difficulty procuring materials from vendors. Whether it’s concrete or a special-order appliance, the contractor is at the mercy of the vendor. If there are shipping delays or other issues, the job will have to be pushed back. Many steps to a project hinge on the one before. For example, walls cannot be put up until electrical work and plumbing has been completed.

• Prior errors: Corrections may need to be made to what a previous contractor or even the homeowner did. Problems need to be fixed or they may compromise the look and safety of the project. Issues may arise if prior renovations were not done to code.

• Obtaining permits: The application process for obtaining permits can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the municipality and the scale of the project. Long permit lead times can delay the start of the job.

• Weather: Mother Nature can affect everything from the availability of materials to the job itself, particularly if work is being done outdoors.

• Finances: The overall cost of the job may change, especially if issues arise during the work. If funds dry up, the project may stall.

Certain factors can affect how long a renovation project will take. Homeowners should know that timelines are estimates and not set in stone.

The Role of Nature in Home Design in the Years Ahead

Outdoor living spaces were prioritized during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when public gatherings were greatly limited and individuals were urged to stay home as much as possible. Such demands have had a ripple effect on various industries, including home design.

According to a survey conducted by the New Home Trends Institute in collaboration with Pro Builder, 58 percent of the more than 300 residential architects, designers and design-minded builders who participated said connection to the outdoors/nature will be an important influence on their design choices in the years to come. In addition, 45 percent of respondents indicated increased attention will be afforded to outdoor entertaining spaces.

So what might the outdoor spaces of homes built in the not-so-distant future look like? Respondents to the survey anticipated a growing demand for various built-in outdoor features, including:

• Firepits or fireplaces

• Outdoor kitchens

• Gazebos or pergolas

• Pools

• Spas or hot tubs

Though trends and consumer demands are ever-shifting, architects and designers are anticipating that future homeowners will want more developed outdoor living spaces and greater access to nature, which is something current homeowners can keep in mind when renovating their properties.

After reaching the final four with bachelor Zach Shallcross during the just recently wrapped 27th season of “The Bachelor,” Lawson was named the new bachelorette. Lawson is a 27-year-old child-and-family therapist from Columbus, Ga.

The ABC series is known to have launched many people into the world of podcasting and influencing — if you get enough screen time to be noticed. Each week involves one-on-one dates and group dates, with the bachelorette narrowing down the men to eventually find the one she wants to be engaged to. At some point in taping, the men leave California and are whisked away to locales internationally in the final weeks of the show.

If you are picked as one of the final four men, you take them home to meet your family.

And if a contestant is cast on the summer spin-off “Bachelor in Paradise” — where men and women from both “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” get a “second-chance” to find love in Mexico — the exposure only grows.

some yarn knotted up from the cat? Or a new smartphone with apps that are hard to figure out? Don’t toss it or give up

A Repair Cafe is a fun, no-charge community event where people bring their cranky, futzy, wonky, or torn household items to the volunteer repair coaches who are glad to try to fix ‘em up. You can bring all kinds of household things to a Repair Cafe: bikes, chairs, toys, small kitchen appliances, lamps, stuffed animals,

jackets, skateboards, and similar. This month we have sewing, mechanical, and electronic specialists available for you to visit with your favorite-but-broken things. We also have a specialist who can untangle any gnarly yarn or string, and a couple of smart techy-types ready to help figure out how to use apps or programs in your Android or Apple device. The motto behind Repair Café is “most items can be fixed…but even if they don’t, we have a good time trying!”

Got something at home that needs fixing? Visit the Repair Café Saturday April 22 , 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, 413 Main Avenue (across from the firehouse). Coffee, hot drinks, goodies, and restrooms available to all

guests. Items need to be small enough to hand carry, and not powered by any combustible fuel. Email questions about items to bring are welcomed and encouraged – just send a note to FRCWRepairCafe@gmail.com.

Hudson to pick developer for public housing revamp

After five responses, decision to be announced April 17

HUDSON

— The Hudson Housing Authority will announce which developer it selected to completely rebuild the city’s public housing portfolio during a meeting April 17.

Rental prices have accelerated in the city of 5,900 since the pandemic, leaving public housing one of the only affordable options. But the two HHA buildings — Bliss Towers and Columbia Apartments, with a combined 131 units — are in disrepair.

The city wants to construct new apartments, move HHA tenants into them, then demolish the old apartments and build additional, mixed-income units on the land.

The HHA issued a Request for Qualifications in November seeking a developer to “negotiate and enter into a pre-development agreement” with the authority. Different from a Request for Proposals, an RFQ does not ask respondents for construction plans for a project, but instead what would qualify them to develop such plans. The project would be a collaboration between the developer and the city.

Hudson Housing Authority Executive Director Jeffrey Dodson said the HHA received five responses for the Request for Qualifications. The selection will be announced during the next regular meeting of the HHA Board of Commissioners.

Hudson had received $800,000 as part of its 2017 Downtown Revitalization grant for predevelopment of a parcel of land across the street from Bliss Towers to build new public housing, but the original plan had to be pared down because of poor soil conditions at the site, which limit the density and height of any new development. The original plan was mothballed in 2019.

In this second go-around, the HHA has the option of purchasing land from the city to

develop the new housing.

Dodson said there were multiple options available, but the HHA had not selected which to buy, which would be a decision made after the developer had been selected.

The funding for the project had not yet been secured, but would most likely include grants and state funding, according to Dodson.

Bliss Towers and the Columbia Apartments turn 50 this year, and the five decades have led to many of the units being unrentable. Twenty-five of the 131 units were offline in December 2020, and Bliss Towers has struggled since its construction with rainwater leaking into apartments through the building’s porous facade.

The city of Hudson wants to move Housing Authority tenants into new apartments, then demolish existing public housing buildings like Bliss Towers, above, and build additional mixed-income housing in its footprint.

Hudson has been working to build housing as its rental market skyrockets. In September, Kearney Realty & Development Group was selected to develop 85 affordable units on three parcels in the city and the Galvan Foundation is working on developing 138 apartments, more than 50 of which are affordable or middle-income.
