Spring cleaning? Have an old clock you’ve been meaning to have repaired?
Trouble with our computer or mobile device?
The ColumbiaNE Repair Cafe can help. 25 skilled “fixers,” or repair coaches, will volunteer their time at the New Lebanon Firehouse on Sunday, April 30, from 12-4 to diagnose, consult and in many cases, fix your broken but cherished item. For free!
The landfills are piling up and most of us no longer know how to fix things ourselves, or even where to turn to find someone who will. It was from this quandary that the idea of the repair cafe was born. Arriving in the Hudson Valley in 2013, there are now well over 30 and new ones pop up every month.
The ColumbiaNE Repair Cafe committee is a loosely affiliated group of
Reports of active shooters send campuses into lockdown
By H. ROSE SCHNEIDER
It started March 30, when districts like East Greenbush and Albany went into lockdown due to reports of active shooters. Similar situations at other area school districts were reported, with State Police saying incidents like these were occurring throughout the state. The following Tuesday, schools in Washington and Warren counties closed or delayed classes after receiving bomb threats.
Threats and false reports of shooters have been occurring for months at schools and colleges across the country. Earlier last month, some area school districts received an identical, threatening email. Incidents at local schools last week were quickly deemed not credible, with State Police later saying the hoax likely originated outside the U.S. But the increasing rate of such incidents can have other impacts.
“That’s the problem with these swatting calls, it spreads law enforcement thin,” said Stuart Williams, community relations coordinator for Ballston Spa Central School District.
What is swatting, and how do schools respond?
The FBI describes swatting as making a hoax emergency call to draw a response from law enforcement, usually a SWAT team, with such calls going back decades. Schools have since had to deal with hoax threats via email and on social media as well. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Geoff Hunter said the term can apply to any case of someone knowingly providing false information to elicit a law enforcement response.
Hunter, who works at the bureau’s Albany field office, believes there has been a slight increase in swatting on a national level. Incidents last week were further exacerbated by recent mass shootings across the country and even local incidents such as the lockdown at Albany Medical Center.
“Unfortunately, after we see a true event we see an increase in these swatting events,” Hunter said, though he noted they had not drawn a correlation between any recent events and last week’s swatting incidents.
Responses from school districts can vary depending on the situation. The state Department of Education defines the following emergency responses as follows:
A Shelter-in-place: Students and staff stay inside the building and in assigned classrooms.
A Hold-in-place: Students and staff stay inside the building and in assigned classrooms during short-term incidents.
A Evacuate: Students and staff leave to a designated location.
A Lockout: Campuses are secured and outdoor activities are terminated, but classes continue as normal.
A Lockdown: Used during immediate threats. Students are moved to safe, out-ofsight areas of classroom and doors are locked or barricaded if necessary.
Politicians seek harsher punishments for threats
The increasing rate of school threats has drawn calls for more punitive measures from state politicians. State Sen. James Tedisco announced last Wednesday he was co-sponsoring a bill to make falsely reporting an incident a felony offense. Mohawk Valley state legislators Sen. Joseph Griffo and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon have renewed their

TROY — Intruders entered City Hall and other parts of the nine-story Hedley Building sometime over the weekend, city police said Monday.
“Mischievous” was how Police Chief Dan DeWolf described the actions by the person or people who entered the building at 433 River St. sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday. Police said there was no sign of forced entry, but declined to specify how they think the individual or individuals got in.
The trespassers entered City Hall on the fifth floor and ate food in the employees’ break room. While sources described it as a party, city officials said they wouldn’t call it that.
“Papers and files were ransacked,” said a City Hall source who asked not to be identified due to the ongoing police investigation. The source said papers were thrown on the floor. The government offices were closed Monday as police investigated the incident.
Mayor Patrick Madden said file cabinets were not ransacked. No city property was identified as being stolen. Madden said most city offices were locked and went untouched. DeWolf said at least one laptop was taken from other offices in the building. The building directory lists 21 businesses, including the city of Troy.
“At this point, we can confirm individual(s) criminally trespassed throughout multiple floors of the building, including some areas of our City Hall on the 5th Floor,” Assistant Chief of Police Steven Barker said in a statement. “Detectives and evidence technicians

Stewart’s Holiday Match Funds LVORC’s Innovative Program for Children
Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC) has received $1000 from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program. The funding supports the Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program, increasing children’s chances for success in school and in life through positive reading experiences with caring adults.
Children at School 2 and School 14 in Troy and at Van Rensselaer Elementary in Rensselaer are paired one-to-one with volunteer mentors from local businesses, colleges, and the greater community. Volunteers read aloud to their reading partner once a week during lunchtime. 47 reading mentors and 60 students have participated during the 2022-2023 school year. According to the remedial reading teacher at Van Rensselaer Elementary, the program has improved the self-esteem of the children who participate in the program. Reading skills for all participants have improved, including comprehension, sight words and phonics. Most

-Please note: our programs will be held in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, lower level. The
building is handicapped accessible. Our museum is located across from the church, so perhaps you can visit our establishment after the presentation. We look forward to seeing you. Any questions? Please call 518 283-4890.

of the students do not have someone who reads to them at home, and it’s valuable for them to form positive relationships with adults. They are learning to listen and to wait their turn to speak.
“Children who develop a love of reading are on their way to becoming lifelong learners,” says Nancy Benz, Executive Director of LVORC. “Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County provides a wide range of programs and services to promote literacy in the Capital Region. The Power Lunch program is a great way to engage volunteers in building a more literate community.”
LVORC provides free, confidential tutoring to adults in Rensselaer County and Albany County. Since 1968, we have trained volunteers to help learners to improve their ability to read, write, speak and understand English; empowered our learners to be advocates for themselves; and educated the community about literacy issues. We also offer math, computer, and financial literacy; English Literacy Civics and citizenship prep. New volunteers are always welcome. Call 518 244-4650 or visit www.lvorc.org.

We were planning Nick’s 90th Birthday Party but he sadly passed away suddenly on Wednesday March 29th in one of his favorite rooms The Music Room in his comfy chair after an active morning.
Nick was one of a kind and always left people with smiles on their faces. A great dancer with a gigantic heart! Everything he had was shared with all the people he loved. We are so thankful to Nick and Tim for their years of friendship and we hope to always carry a bit of the love, generosity and thoughtfulness they implanted in us.
We will be dining on Prime Rib Burgers, Vegetables, Potatoes and Special dessert. Music will be by one of Nick’s favorite bands The Gone Grey Band. There will be an empty seat at our table but on this day we’ll fill it with love for two great friends one with us in body and one with us in spirit. What to know about feline diabetes
No pet owner wants to imagine their furry friend falling victim to illness, but companion animals are not impervious to disease. In fact, various ailments typically associated with humans can affect pets as well.
Diabetes is one condition that cat owners may want to learn about. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, between 0.2 and 1 percent of cats will be diagnosed with diabetes during their lifetime. Though that’s a small percentage, cat owners can still make an effort to understand feline diabetes so they can spot its signs and help their cats avoid any potential risk factors for the disease.
What is feline diabetes?
Much like their human owners, cats need sugar (glucose) for energy. Glucose in the blood needs insulin, which is a hormone the pancreas produces. The CFHC notes that insulin is used to “unlock” the door to cells. Insulin attaches to cells and indicates the right time to absorb glucose, which is used as fuel and leads to lower glucose levels in the blood. Type 1 diabetes occurs when insulin production is insufficient, leading to high concentrations of glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes occurs when glucose levels are elevated because the body’s cells are not responding appropriately to insulin. The CFHC reports that, in the case of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, cells cannot access the nutrients they need because insulin cannot transport the sugar from the bloodstream into the cells that need it.
What are the risk factors for feline diabetes?
Some of the risk factors for diabetes in humans affect cats’ risk for the disease as well. For example, obesity and physical activity are two risk factors for feline diabetes. Being obese and living a sedentary lifestyle increases humans’ risk for diabetes as well. The link between obesity and feline diabetes is so significant that the CFHC indicates obese cats are up to four times more likely to develop diabetes than ideal weight cats.
But those are not the only two risk factors for feline diabetes. The CFHC notes that the use of glucocorticoids, a type of steroid sometimes used to treat feline asthma, could increase the risk for feline diabetes. In addition, PetMD reports that certain breeds of cats have been found to get diabetes more than others, which indicates that genetics could play a role as well.
What are some symptoms of feline diabetes?
Weight loss and increased thirst and urination are two of the more common signs of feline diabetes reported by cat owners. The weight loss occurs even when cats exhibit a strong appetite. Though the CFHC indicates this is rare, in some instances cats with feline diabetes may experience nerve damage in the hind limbs. Though this isn’t painful, it may compel cats to walk or stand with their hocks on or close the ground.
Can feline diabetes be treated?
The good news regarding feline diabetes is that the prognosis is good when the right steps are taken to manage the condition at home. A veterinarian may recommend a combination of insulin therapy and dietary changes. Insulin therapy typically involves insulin injections, but the CFHC notes that syringe sizes are typically so small that cats tolerate the injections quite well.
Feline diabetes may be something cat owners have never considered. The condition can affect any cat, and learning its ins and outs can ensure cat owners know how to respond if cats begin to exhibit symptoms of the disease.
Sometimes it is challenging to realize a pet dog is losing its vision. That’s because, unlike humans, dogs do not rely on sight as readily as other senses, like hearing and smell. A pup who is slowly going blind might be able to navigate quite well, as the other senses enable the dog to adapt to changes in eyesight, advises the American Kennel Club.
Pet parents who are concerned their dogs may be losing their vision can learn the risk factors for vision loss and keep an eye out for potential signs that such loss is present.
Breed risk
Certain breeds are at higher risk for health issues that can lead to vision loss. For example, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in Cocker Spaniels, says HandicappedPets.com. Both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are genetically predisposed to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can cause blindness. Due to recessive genes, Siberian huskies can be susceptible to eye issues, including corneal dystrophy. Boston terriers may develop cherry eye, a condition caused by a prolapsed eyelid.
Pet owners should speak with their veterinarians to learn if their dogs have a genetic predisposition to eye diseases and conditions that may lead to blindness.
Conditions that cause blindness
Dogs who have had a cataract, which is a clouding of the eye that stops light from reaching the retina, may slowly lose their vision. Diabetes also can cause full or partial blindness. Glaucoma, PRA and sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) all can lead to blindness in one or both eyes. If dogs have been diagnosed with these issues, it’s best to work with a vet to carefully monitor and/or treat them, if possible.
Signs of diminished eyesight
Vision deterioration can produce certain signs, including:
• Cloudy appearance of the eye or eyes.
• Improper pupil response to light and darkness.
• Difficulty focusing on items or people’s faces. Some dogs may have to come much closer to recognize a person’s features.
• The dog seems dazed and confused, or gets surprised by someone suddenly when entering a room.
• Hesitancy running or moving around, or changes in mobility. The dog may no longer want to go up and down stairs.
• Difficulty finding the food bowl, as well as weight loss from not eating.
• Behavioral changes, such as acting more anxious, sullen or even scared.
Vision loss can occur in dogs, particularly aging canines. Pet owners can be attuned to signs of diminishing vision and take steps to help their furry friends.

A Rundown on DIY Demos
Homeowners looking to make improvements to their homes likely want to make such projects as budget-friendly as possible. After soliciting estimates from contractors, homeowners may seek to do some work themselves in an effort to cut costs. That is why many in-
dividuals opt to handle demolition and other preparatory tasks before contractors get started. There are important things to keep in mind when doing demo.
• Prybars are your friend. These tools, sometimes called crowbars, can be used to remove nails or pull materials apart.
• Cover vents in the space where you’re working. Construction dust can be sucked into the HVAC system and cause furnaces to clog. This also may cause the distribution of dust throughout the home.
• Use safety gear. Always wear safety goggles, gloves, (Continued on Next Page)

For 40 years I’ve been telling my contemporaries to stop eating meat with all its blood and toxins. Look what you’re doing to these animals. Do you dare face videos of how they are treated? Stop putting money down at the supermarket counter to pay someone else to commit this cruelty.
Look what you’re doing to your body - ruining it. And now all of these people are dead : horizontal. And here I stand, alone and vertical.
What do I do? Tell their progeny to see if they can be saved?

calls to pass a bill that would create new crimes referred to as making a threat of mass violence.
“With these terror calls, it’s becoming open season on spreading fear, stress, anxiety and depression throughout our vulnerable student bodies as well as staff and their families,” Te-disco said in a statement.
Other districts suffer from ‘copycat’ incidents
As nearby schools received bomb threats last Tuesday, police that morning were also investigating a shooting threat a Ballston Spa High School student received, Williams said. That afternoon, Rotterdam police investigated a similar threat on social media against the Mohonasen Central School District.
Williams said the parent of a Ballston Spa High School student contacted the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office after the student saw a threat on social media. A shelterin-place was issued for the high school and middle school as law enforcement searched the campus. Classes were delayed and eventually canceled at all four elementary schools for the same reason, Williams said.
“You get what’s called copycat events in school districts,” he said. “You never know if it’s connected.”
Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said the threat, sent over SnapChat to a student, was deemed not credible, but was still under investigation.
Rotterdam Police Lt. Patrick Farry said the Mohonasen Central School District had found images of a handgun with a threatening message posted Tuesday afternoon on its Twitter feed, with the student responsible interviewed and charged with a felony for making a terroristic threat. District Superintendent Shannon Shine said in a statement the threat was made by a middle school student using a virtual private network, or VPN, to mask the origin of the posts.
The use of VPNs, which are commercially available and not particularly expensive, are part of an ongoing challenge for law enforcement, Hunter said.
“These criminal actors are using more and more instruments to obfuscate their identities,” he said.
The student’s threat was found not credible, Farry said.
“He does not have access to any firearms.”

are following our normal investigative procedures to determine what other crimes may have been committed, as well as the identity of any involved individuals,” Barker continued.
“At this time we have no reason to believe City Hall was specifically targeted. Also, we do not believe any sensitive areas were accessed on any of the impacted floors.”
There are surveillance cameras in the building, but none in the City Hall offices on the fifth floor, Barker said. Police are examining available video from the building and other businesses on River Street, DeWolf said.
Madden said a review would be conducted to determine what additional security measures should be taken at City Hall. The mayor did not rule out installing security cameras.
“There also has been no forced entry identified. It appears the areas accessed were not access-restricted areas,” Barker said.
DeWolf declined to say how the Hedley Building was entered. Troy City Hall is directly accessible by elevators that open into the fifth-floor lobby. Generally, city employees lock the doors into the two sections of City Hall on either side of the elevators. The floor also is accessible by stairways.
The city rents the fifth floor of the building for its offices. It does not own a City Hall building as Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Rensselaer, Cohoes, Watervliet, Mechanicville, Hudson and other cities do. Troy knocked down its City Hall at 1 Monument Square about a decade ago to clear the site for redevelopment. So far, no development has taken place.
