Finally it is officially fall. So far weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve avoided frost and the tail end of summer has been quite pleasurable weather-wise. The meadows are all ablaze with wild asters and goldenrodâ&#x20AC;Śwhat a show that is! The annuals are flowering with all the energy they can muster and the lawn seems to be in overdrive. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still mowing but not nearly as much as earlier in the season.. It is a chore that I no longer look forward to but it is better that shoveling snow I guess. Soon it will be time for the mower to get a final cleaning and oil change before getting put in the back of the shed for the winter. The seasons just keep rolling along.

This is the time of year that I like to collect seeds from annuals that I want to reproduce next year. At the end of a dry day, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll collect the mature seedpods from some of my favorites and put them into envelopes for storage. Cosmos, cleome, marigolds, and my purple amaranthus will all contribute to the collection. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also gather seeds from easy-to-grow perennials like coneflower, the several varieties of gallardia that my wife Sharon started from seed several years ago and, of course, the black hollyhocks. There is such an abundance of seeds that I like to scatter what I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t save into outlying areas and down the long driveway. Sometime they come up, sometimes they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. When they do itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a treat.

Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on projects to make next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing season even better than the one just passing.

There are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated.

As the season winds down, time can often be found to build new beds for planting next spring. This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy but, as long as the roots and stems are in good shape, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pass them up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a plan for them. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-burlap shrubs or trees. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead.

First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great spot.

The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a 4â&#x20AC;&#x2122; high retaining wall on the western side of my vegetable garden that works well for this purpose. Parallel to the wall, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and balled bargains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks above the wall, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind. Then, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll fill around the pots and balls with loose soil and tamp it in. Until winter sends my treasures into complete dormancy, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll keep an eye out that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dry out but, with rain such a regular feature this time of year, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not of much concern. As early as I can in spring, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding bone meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of time this fall. Thanks for the read.

Painting is a job that requires preparation and the right equipment. Oftentimes homeowners are unsure about whether they need to use primer before painting or if just paint will do the trick. Although there are no firm rules, there are certain cases where one or the other will be adequate.

Consider a room where the walls have been heavily stained, either by moisture infiltration, rust or another factor. Deep-set stains may bleed through regular paint, therefore a primer should be applied to help block and lock-in the stain. When a room had previously been painted in a very dark color, like red or purple, a primer can help cover the color quickly without the need for multiple applications of regular paint. There also are specialized primers that can be used in rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms that often contain a lot of moisture. These primers inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on painted surfaces. Primers also may be used on materials, such as metal or plastic, to help the colored paint stick to the surface of the item. If a room is only to be painted white or tinted slightly with color, then a primer alone can be used. Certain primers seal porous wall surfaces so they do not absorb paint, requiring more coats for coverage.

Rooms that are being painted that are already white and free of stains or other surface abnormalities may be painted sufficiently with just a coat of regular paint. If skipping primer, look for a high-quality, thick paint that boasts good coverage in one or two coats.

There are new products today that offer primer and paint all in one combination. The jury is still out on the efficacy of these new items, but homeowners can experiment with these paints to see if they work for them. Keep in mind that the cost of a combination product may be more than traditional paint and primer.

Undermount sinks growing in popularity Undermount sinks are quickly becoming the most popular type of sink in today’s kitchens, likely because undermount sinks usually go hand-in-hand with solid-surface countertops. Since homeowners are choosing solid-surface materials, such as granite, quartz and even manufacturered stone for their kitchen counters, the need for an undermount sink becomes evident. Here’s why: Undermount sinks create a seamless surface that works well with solid-surface countertops while maintaining the counter’s aesthetic appeal. They are installed so the top of the sink is flush with the edge of the counter. When solid-surface counters are cut to accommodate the sink, exact measurements are needed so that the hole is essentially custom made for the particular sink so it fits like a glove. Cutting hard materials is not easily done by a do-it-yourselfer. As a result, the project is often handled by the countertop manufacturer.

Unlike undermount sinks, the alternative is a drop-in sink.

These are traditional sinks that do not require an exact cut of the countertop material. That’s because the sink has a lip that overhangs the counter and can cover up inexact holes.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be afraid of pattern Many homeowners want to introduce pattern to their rooms but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where to start. They may wonder if two patterns match or how to determine scale. It may take a little practice, but using pattern is easier than one may think.

Nothing adds visual interest to a room more than pattern and color. While homeowners may have the knack with color, they may shy away from pattern. Individuals can trust their instincts -- theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re usually right. For those who have mastered pattern with their wardrobes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to try out some pattern in home design.

Varying pattern size adds dimension to a room. Not every pattern should be the same size and variety, otherwise things can look too matched and staged. For a room to feel a bit more upbeat, consider complimentary opposite colors. If you prefer a more restful atmosphere, try a palette of colors from the same family. Just vary the intensity of the shades.

Homeowners who have gained some pattern confidence may want to strike out on their own to create a room that is unique. Those who still need a little help may want to consider taking the path of designers before them. There are certain patterns and fabrics that have already been established as working together for certain design styles. Here are a few. * American Southwest:Navajo patterns are at the forefront of this design style and can be used on upholstery or pillows. Use a smaller-scale stripe on window treatments. Solid-shaded throw pillows in a complementary color to the Navajo pattern will coordinate well. * English country: This style is about large-scale chintz on sofa and draperies. Mix in narrow striped, slip-covered lounge chairs for a little extra panache. * American country: A small floral print on the sofa or comforter can be offset with a large country quilt pattern hung on the wall as a wall treatment. Checkerboard checks, medium stripes on draperies or select crocheted valences coordinate well. * 18th century: Lavish patterned fabrics in chintz or paisley featuring golds and robinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s egg blue are just some of the options for classic decorating. * Modern:Mix stripes and geometric patterned items in splashes of color to add a modern feel to a room.

Individuals can experiment with patterns to make a room more personalized and less of a neutral blank page. If it proves difficult to come up with patterns that work together, look at design magazines or books for some inspiration.

Before you buy your paint and painting tools, do your homework on the variety of tapes on the market. Read package labels carefully before making your selection. For most surfaces, a premium-quality painter’s tape will do the job. Here are four essential qualities to consider: Resistance to “bleeding.” One of the biggest problems painters face is paint seeping under -- or “bleeding” -- beyond tape edges. This can cause messy lines and uneven workmanship, and result in the need for frequent touch ups. Simple ways to add years to a vehicle’s life Getting more for your money is a popular trend among consumers. As economic uncertainty reigns, smart consumers are looking for the best values in an effort to get the most out of each and every dollar they spend.

One of the best ways to stretch a dollar is to take better care of your vehicle. Buying a home and financing a college education are perhaps the only times many consumers will spend more money than they do when purchasing a vehicle. But unlike a home or an education, few people take their vehicles seriously, all too often avoiding vehicle maintenance that can greatly increase a car or truck’s life expectancy.

Drivers who want to keep their cars going strong for years to come can do so in a handful of ways. * Prevent, prevent, prevent. Preventive maintenance might seem like a boring way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon, but the efforts will be well worth it. Oil changes and filter replacements are quick and easy jobs but pay major dividends over the long haul. Drivers who aren’t comfortable performing these tasks themselves need not worry about costly trips to the mechanic.

Routine jobs like an oil change or air filter replacement are relatively inexpensive, and today’s vehicles can go much longer between oil changes and filter replacements. Each vehicle manufacturer is different, so drivers should consult their owner’s manual and adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule. * Stay balanced. Balanced tires are tires that will last longer. But an out of balance tire will not only shorten the life of tires, it can also do damage to the rest of the vehicle while simultaneously making riding in the car much less comfortable. When a tire is properly balanced, its mass is uniformly distributed around the axle, making for a smooth, vibration-free ride. However, an out of balance tire shortens the life expectancy of suspension components, including bearings and shocks. Repairs that result from an unbalanced tire can prove costly. Should a vibration occur as the vehicle accelerates (typically, this vibration will be noticeable when the car reaches speeds of 40-45 mph), chances are the tires are not properly balanced. * Look good, feel good. The credo of “look good, feel good” isn’t only applicable to humans. In fact, a car that looks good likely feels good as well.Washing and waxing a car regularly helps avoid rust under the carriage and in the wheel wells. The longer a car goes between washes, the more likely it is to rust, and the paint is likely to corrode as well. There is no quick fix to either of these problems, but preventive maintenance, like routinely washing and waxing the vehicle, can keep these potentially menacing issues from ever rearing their rusty heads. Preventing rust and corrosion is also a good way to ensure a car’s resale value does not diminish over time. * Get out and drive. Cars that spend most of their life in stop-andgo traffic likely won’t last as long as those that routinely get out and go. That’s because city driving with lots of stopping and going is very taxing on an engine. On a highway, air flow to the radiator, oil flow to the engine and everything that makes a car run is much more consistent, reducing the stress on the engine as a result. Constantly accelerating and decelerating is hard on an engine, while the consistent speeds of highway driving offer a welcome respite to the engine. City dwellers should get out and drive their car on a highway at least once a month for no less than 30 minutes. This is also a good way to get rid of potentially harmful condensation that can negatively impact engine performance.

When looking to get more for your money, one of the best ways to do so is to take better care of the car sitting in your driveway.
