2011 Ag Literacy Week

WARREN COUNTY – Ag Literacy Week (March 21-25) will be celebrated across NY state in second grade classrooms with a visit from a community member involved in agriculture. This year’s book is the Chicks & Chickens written by Gail Gibbons, which will be read to the class and then donated to the school library. Cornell University Cooperative Extension and 4-H is seeking volunteer readers, preferably parents or students, to read the book to elementary students (K-2). Cornell Cooperative Extension is also seeking personal or business sponsors to purchase books for every elementary school and library in Warren County. The cost of each book is $6 and they will be donated to the school’s library after being read. Adopt a Seat Fundraiser

SO. GLENS FALLS – The Parents in Support of the Arts (SPSA) is helping the South Glens Falls Music Department purchase a baby grand piano for the newly renovated High School Auditorium. We have started an “Adopt a Seat” program to let community members “adopt” an auditorium seat for $50 per individual or family and $100 for local businesses and associations. Participants’ names or a short message will be engraved on a metal nameplate to be permanently affixed on the arm of the adopted seat. GLENS FALLS – On April 3 the Glens Falls Medical Mission will hold its 9th annual Family FUNdraiser Fiesta at the Glens Falls Civic Center from 11am-4pm. SARATOGA – On Wednesday, March 2 at 7pm, the Presbyterian-New England Congregational Church will be hosting a program entitled, Jewish Boat to Gaza. The Jewish Boat to Gaza project was started in 2010 when the Israeli military conducted an ill-fated interception against one of the six ships of the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla.” Within days, an international coalition of Jewish groups launched the Jewish Boat to Gaza in protest and as an assertion that Israeli government policies of occupation of Palestinian territories and the continuing siege of Gaza are not supported by all Jews. The Jewish Boat was intercepted by the Israeli military in international waters. Passengers and crew were detained, then released and deported for having entered Israel illegally. Several persons who were on board the Jewish Boat will speak at the church to share their stories. A reception will follow the presentation. Support Program for Grieving Children & Families SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Community Hospice of Saratoga offers Wave Riders, a six-week support group for children, Grades K-8, who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives, including a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Children meet in age specific groups, sharing thoughts and feelings using art, music, games and discussion. Parent Educational Support Group is offered concurrently. GLENS FALLS – bjsartworks Gallery presents its first show of 2011: “Expressive Identities”, March 5 - April 2. Opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 5, 4pm. Open to the public and free of charge. Lake George High School art students will be exhibiting small works at bjsartworks Gallery located at “The Shirt Factory”. Ceramic students will be displaying a series of mugs, vases, plates and other fine crafted ware.

Sculpture students will show their wooden relief landscapes, which are creatively painted with watercolor, acrylic paint, and wood stains. This event and show is intended to give the students a educational experience in a professional gallery setting.
