Now in it’s 21st year, the annual food drive helps provide assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table. “The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is important for our local communities because it helps stock food banks and pantries for the summer, a time when there’s an increased need for food assistance, especially for children who are out of school,” said Fredric, V. Rolando, NALC president. “The letter carriers are commited to supporting the drive by picking up and delivery food donations to local Feeding America food banks and hunger-relief organizations in their markets.” BURNT HILLS - The Burnt Hills Farmers’ Market (BHFM) will be OPENING FOR THE SEASON on Saturday, May 11, 2013. I was just outside enjoying one of the subtler pleasures of spring; the sound of a breeze rustling through the leaves of a large maple tree. It’s one of those things that you didn’t even realize that you missed until you hear it again after so many months. Another thrill was the arrival of our resident hummingbirds who’ve finally returned from their southern home down Mexico way. I feel privileged that they’ve chosen my area to nest and mate. My hummingbird feeders are filled and ready. Ah, the little pleasures of spring. I enjoyed watching my fifteen varieties of daffodils flower but now they’re finished. This reminds me that a lot of folks will forget to “recharge’ their spring flower bulbs at this time of year and will be disappointed next year when they get fewer or no flowers on their daffodils, tulips and other hardy bulbs. This is the time to take action. Let me briefly give you the lowdown. Think of your spring flowering bulbs as rechargeable batteries. In spring, after their flowering cycle is finished, the bulb/batteries are discharged. To get the best show possible next spring you need to recharge them. How? The first step is to snip off the flower stem. Cut the flower stem off down low; as near the base as possible. The reason we do this is to prevent the plant from putting any energy into producing seeds. For the plant, this is their most important goal so they’ll use up a lot of energy to produce seeds. We have no need for the seeds and so, by removing the flower stem where the seeds are forming, we’ll cause the plant to send all that energy back down to the bulb/battery where it’s stored for future use. Make sure that you don’t remove any of the leaves when you’re snipping off the flower stems. Think of the leaves as solar collectors that gather energy from the sun and send it down to the bulb/battery where it’s stored for future use. The final step is to feed your bulbs/batteries. Get your hands on some gentle, high phosphorus, granular plant food. I like the Espoma brand’s Flower-tone. It’s gentle and I’ll use it not only for the bulbs but all my flowering perennials as well. Poke some holes in the soil with a pipe about as deep as you planted the bulbs, and then fill the holes 2/3 up with the Flower-tone. This is where the roots are that will be able to absorb the nutrients. You could scatter the food on the surface and some of it will eventually make it down to the roots but I like to poke the holes so I can get the food where the bulbs/batteries can make the best use of it. Don’t get too close to the stems but insert your food 3” or 4” away. High phosphorus foods will also provide extra energy that your bulbs/batteries will store for future use. That’s it; just three easy steps to insure that your bulbs/batteries have stored plenty of energy so you’ll have more flowers next year instead of less. 1. Snip off the flower stems. 2. Leave the leaves. 3. Feed them with gentle, high phosphorus, granular food. After the leaves have turned all yellow it means that they’ve stored as much energy as the bulbs/batteries can hold and it’s O.K. to trim them off as well. If you find the gradually yellowing leaves unattractive, try masking them by planting them among other plants that fill in later. I like to plant daffodils among daylilies (or vice versa). The leaves are a similar shape and, as the daffodils are finishing, the daylilies are just coming into their own. Another topic I want to touch on this week is moss in the lawn. If this bothers you, you should be aware that the reason the moss took hold in the lawn is because the soil has gradually become acidic. There is a tendency for most soils to become acidic. Grass clippings, leaves and twigs decaying in the soil help make it more acidic. Lawn food applications and acidic rain also contribute. As the soil becomes acidic, it is harder for the grass to survive. As the grass (which prefers neutral soil) thins, the moss (which loves acidic soil) starts to take over. So how do we stop this vicious cycle? The answer is testing the soil’s pH and applying the amount of lime required to bring the pH of the soil back to neutral. Keeping the pH of the soil of your lawn at neutral (7.0) is, perhaps, the most important aspect of lawn care and, undoubtedly, the most overlooked. Besides discouraging moss, lime provides calcium and allows your lawn to make maximum use of any nutrients available. If you want to think of your lawn as a gasoline engine then lawn food would be the gasoline that makes the engine run. Lime would be the engine oil that makes sure all goes smoothly. Without oil, no amount of gasoline can make an engine run for too long. Without lime, eventually the lawn won’t grow as well as it used to. Think of your soil pH test as the dipstick you need to determine you’re how low your lawn’s pH is. These pH test kits are cheap and easy to use and, believe me, can save you a lot of time and money that you’ll spend on grass seed and fertilizer trying to repair a situation that could have been avoided. Lime won’t kill moss but it will prevent it. Once it’s there you’ll have to rake it all out, apply lime, grass seed and a starter fertilizer and spend your time watering the grass seed constantly until it is established. Rest assured, if you care about your lawn, a pH tester is a bargain, and lime is cheap compared to lawn food and grass seed. Thanks for the read.

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day Whether she’s still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother’s Day. And while traditional gifts like flowers and chocolate might make for thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts, those who want to go the extra mile for Mom this year can consider the following unique gift ideas. * Concert tickets: Many adults recall the days of their youth when Mom would relax while listening to some of her favorite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favorite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom’s musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music. * Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then nothing will elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too far for you to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love. * Parts unknown: Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore.

A Day Just For Mom
Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn’t always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day has been around in some form since ancient times. The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades.
Joseph Tranka & Sons
Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the English took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats.

ably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Howe thought there should be a day in honor of mothers in the United States. She introduced her idea in 1872, calling for the celebration to take place on June 2 and all mothers to take a stand against war. Howe had seen the devastation the loss of life in the Civil War had had on mothers everywhere. Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother’s Day as we know it today did not come about until the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it.
holiday for mothers every-
As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother’s wish and started campaigning for a national

where. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions. By 1911, Jarvis’ efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celaround the world. Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.
The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded consider-
Not Quite The Same By Ronda Addy Even though it is sometimes referred to as Mother’s Day, Mothering Day in the United Kingdom differs somewhat from Mother’s Day in the United States. Celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mother Mary, Mothering Sunday traditionally involved children, mostly girls working as domestic servants, who were given the day off so they could visit their mothers. While Mother’s Day in the United States is always on the second Sunday of May, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which varies from year to year. Dating back to the 16th century, Mothering Sunday was a religious holiday designed to bring families together. After they turned 10, children would often leave home to serve as apprentices or domestic servants. Once a year, these children would be given a day off in the middle of Lent so they could visit their “Mother Church” and their family. The children would often bring gifts like special cakes and flowers to their mothers. Over time, the holiday expanded to include all mothers, not just the Mother Church. Mothering Sunday has several names. Although it is not com-
monly used today, Mothering Sunday is sometimes referred to as Refreshment Sunday because fasting rules are often relaxed. In northern England and Scotland, the day is called Carling Sunday because people like to eat carling, pancakes prepared from steeped peas fried in butter with pepper and salt The day is also called Rose Sunday because purple robes worn in the church are replaced with rose-colored ones and mothers attending the services are offered posies of flowers. A food closely associated with Mothering Sunday is Simnel, a two-layered fruitcake made of almond paste and 11 balls of marzipan icing on top representing the 11 disciples. The cake is boiled in water, baked and saved until Easter. According to legend, a man named Simon and his wife Nell argued whether the cake should be baked or boiled. In the end, they both won and the cake was named after both of them; hence, Sim-Nell. Over time, Mothering Sunday has become significantly less religious and is now a close cousin of the Mother’s Day celebration in the United States. Today children give their mothers gifts and flowers and take them out to eat on these special days.

DEAR HEART OF JESUS, In
the past I have asked for many favors, this time I ask you for this very special one. Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your broken heart where your father will see it. Then in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise to publish it and your favor will be granted. L.A.H.

EMPLOYMENT Building a business wardrobe The transition from college student or stay-at-home mom to full-time professional requires a number of changes. Those changes include updating your wardrobe to give it a more professional feel. Clothing that’s acceptable for a jaunt to the store or a night out may not be appropriate for the office. Just what constitutes a professional wardrobe has changed over the years, and the guidelines for such attire are no longer as firm as they once were. But it still behooves a woman to add some classic, professional pieces to her closet. While skirts and pantyhose may no longer be mandatory, dressing conservatively and cleanly in an office environment is always a safe bet.
In order to achieve a wardrobe transformation without breaking the bank, the fashion experts at Marie Claire advise adding separates to build around a base suit. Find a suit that is flattering to your figure and make it a workplace staple. Then purchase coordinating pants, sweater sets, shirts, another skirt, and accessories that can be mixed and matched with elements from the suit to create different looks. If your budget allows, purchase another suit in a different color so you can continue to build wardrobe possibilities. When selecting base pieces, opt for neutral colors of tan, gray, black, and blue so that these items can be worn repeatedly without being noticed. Accessories and
blouses can offer pops of color when necessary. A nice handbag or pair of shoes can quite easily add color to an otherwise monotone ensemble. When selecting items from the rack, look for those that fit well but aren’t too constrictive or racy. Inquire with your new employer’s hiring manager or human resources department to find out if the workplace has any restrictions on wardrobe. There may be employee guidelines, particularly in certain industries, such as law or education. If no such restrictions are in place, keep skirts to knee-length and avoid particularly low-cut tops. Save more revealing items for nights out with friends.
Many employers have adopted dress-down days as perks for their employees. Although you may be invited to dress more casually, avoid dressing for a day at the beach or hanging around the house. Opt for trouserstyle jeans that are free of rips and embellishments. If athletic shoes are allowed, make sure they are clean and not the pair you wear while tending to your garden. Avoid graphic T-shirts that feature potentially offensive or suggestive messages. In more conservative companies, dressing down may be opting for khakis instead of suits. It is important to know the difference. Women who are adding to their wardrobes can include these all-time business staples.

WWW.LATHAMFORD.COM The Talk Just Got a Little Easier (NewsUSA) - When you hand car keys to your teenager for the first time, your heart races as you think of what could happen. The fact is that car

That’s why Trico Products (www.tricoproducts.com) has made a commitment to make teen driving safer and encourage parents to have a serious, sit-down conversation with their children before allowing them to get behind the wheel. To help make that conversation a little easier, Trico offers these helpful talking points:. *Seatbelt -- Teens buckle up far less frequently than adults, so be sure to reiterate that fastening your seatbelt should be the very first thing you do before keys are even in the ignition. *Texting -- Cell phones, the radio and other passengers are all major distractions. Every second a teen takes their eyes of the road could be an opportunity for a terrible accident. (CONTINUED)

*Defensive driving -- Teens need to be hyper-sensitive to all surroundings, since their brain is not fully developed. They must not only be aware of how they’re driving but how others drive too so collisions are avoided.
Make certain they have roadside assistance and insurance information readily available. Also, teach them about basic maintenance to ensure they schedule regular oil changes, tire rotations and inspections and always check that they’ve changed the wiper blades.
