The exercise of journaling is beneficial when you need to translate your experience to a resume. Keep daily or weekly notes on the following to make resume writing easier:

• Track part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, and campus involvement • Keep a record of new skills mastered

Dr. Michael Clagg from Haysville USD 261 school district interviews an education major at the 7th annual Education Interview Day on February 10, 2014.

• Identify transferable skills

• List job duties you enjoy or do not enjoy • Make notes on how you solved a problem • Write about accomplishments

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute...

A student called this morning. He was frantic. He has an interview tomorrow and he’s not ready. He wanted to schedule a mock interview. We didn’t have any appointment times available. None. I couldn’t stop thinking about that disappointed student. So, I want to remind you – don’t wait until the last minute. Schedule an appointment with one of our counselors early in your final semester to go over your job search plan, as well as your resume, cover letter and reference page. Schedule a mock interview so you have opportunity to practice your interviewing skills before an employer calls to schedule an interview with you. You leave too much to chance if you wait until the last minute. Employers are in control of whether or not they want to talk with you or even read your resume. But, you can be in control of presenting the best “you” possible. And, that takes some planning. The clock is ticking. Don’t wait. Call 978.3435 to make an appointment!

& Steakburgers

Contact name and title: Ben Hesse – Director of Training What was your first job after completing your education? After graduating from Wichita State, I took a job with Freddy’s as a cashier. During that time, there were only two units, east and west Wichita. I had a good feeling about Freddy’s; it would someday expand and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I had a vision of where I wanted to take my career and I made sure to learn the business from the ground up. Hard work and determination helped me develop from a Cashier to a General Manager and eventually I was promoted to Director of Training. Tell us about your organization and how it got started. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is a national quick-casual restaurant famous for its cooked-to-order steakburgers, crispy shoestring fries and signature dessert treats made with premium frozen custard. Started here in Wichita, by Scott Redler and Bill, Randy and Freddy Simon, Freddy’s opened its first location at the corner of 21st Street and Tyler Road in 2002 and its first franchise location in Hutchinson during 2004. Freddy’s currently operates more than 115 units and can be found in 17 states. Do you have a job search or resume tip to share? Find something for which you’ve developed a passion and have a vision for where you want it to lead. You might not score that executive position right out of college, but, in time, hard work and believing in yourself can get you there. Many companies are now led by those who humbly learned every position and poured their heart into each, all the way to the top. What is unique about your organization? Freddy’s is an exceptional culture. Employees come first; they deliver the Freddy’s experience to our guests and are therefore invaluable. We promote from within. Our people are empowered and, because of this, we’ve achieved excellent retention rates at all levels. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? The knowledge I gained from the entrepreneurship school at Wichita State helped me refine the Freddy’s systems and processes. Each restaurant operates as an individual business and management is authorized to think like owners. I took my education and with it, contributed suggestions that helped shape several areas of the business. http://www.freddysusa.com/

Political scientists study the origin, development, and operation of political systems. They research political ideas and analyze the structure and operation of governments, policies, political trends, and related issues.

Duties:

Political Scientists

Most political scientists—about 53 percent—work for the federal government. Others work for think tanks, nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, political lobbying groups, and labor organizations. Political scientists need a master’s degree or Ph.D. in political science, public administration, or a related field. They should have strong writing skills and research experience. • Research political subjects, such as the U.S. political system, relations between the United States and foreign countries, and political ideologies • Collect and analyze data from sources such as public opinion surveys and election results • Use qualitative sources, such as historical documents, to develop theories • Use quantitative methods, such as statistical analysis, to test theories • Evaluate the effects of policies and laws on government, businesses, and people • Identify new political issues to study • Monitor current events, recent policy decisions, and other issues relevant to their work • Forecast political, economic, and social trends • Present research results by writing reports, giving presentations, and publishing in academic journals Political scientists usually conduct research within one of four primary subfields: American politics, comparitive politics, international politics, or political theory.

Important qualities: • analytical skills • critical-thinking skills • intellectual curiosity • writing skills

Job Outlook: Employment of political scientists is expected to grow 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. Employment will increase in response to a growing interest in public policy and political issues. There will be demand for those with extensive knowledge of political systems, institutions, and policies. Because the federal government employs more than half of all political scientists, employment growth will be tempered as overall employment in the federal government declines. However, political scientists will still be needed to assess the impact of government policies, such as the efficiencies of public services, effects of departmental cuts, and advantages of proposed improvements.

What is the proper attire when attending a career fair? Courtesy of The Campus Career Coach Blog Nicholas from West Virginia University asked: I have a two day career fair next week focusing on engineering. I am working on my master’s in mechanical engineering, and I have a question about attire for the career fair. I know not to do t-shirts and jeans. My career service representative said to wear a business suit and tie, but I have also heard business causal (khaki pants with a collared shirt) is acceptable. I feel the suit would be overkill for the career fair, and I would feel more comfortable in the khakis. Which one is more acceptable? Is a plain color polo shirt an acceptable collared shirt for this situation? Hi Nicholas I recommend you listen to your campus career services representative; particularly if they have told recruiters that students have been instructed to wear business attire. I know this sounds cliché, but you never do get a second chance to make a first impression. Now – you might be thinking: “But the recruiters are wearing khakis and golf shirts with their logos. Shouldn’t I try to look like one of them?” My response to that: “You can’t wear the uniform until you are on the team.” You might be able to get away with wearing khakis and a collared shirt to the career fair, but why would you even want to take that chance? On some level, career fairs give recruiters the chance to meet candidates under abnormal circumstances and stressful conditions. This is intentional. When you enter the working world, you will routinely encounter stressful conditions. From the very beginning of the process, recruiters want to see how you perform under pressure. Observing how you approach a career fair will give them an indication of how you approach “non-standard” situations and how seriously you are taking the recruiting process. People dress up for weddings, ceremonies and other special events because they are NOT ordinary. A career fair is NOT an ordinary event in your life, so don’t treat it like one. Wearing a suit might be uncomfortable for you, but part of the career fair experience is demonstrating how well you can present yourself in inherently uncomfortable circumstances. Here’s one final reason to dress up rather than dress down for the career fair. If you are dressed in full-on business attire (suit, shirt, tie, nice shoes) and you feel overdressed, you can always loosen or remove your tie, take off your suit jacket, and roll up your sleeves. If you show up in a golf shirt, khakis and loafers and feel under dressed, your only option is to go home and change clothes. When attending a career fair, standing out from the crowd is the biggest challenge. You want to stand out from the crowd, but you want to stand out for the right reasons!

Marketing Your Resume to Employers Courtesy of the National Association of Colleges and Employers Hiring managers get flooded with resumes for job openings. How can you ensure your resume will be looked at? Take some advice from hiring managers:

* Do the basics • Proofread for spelling, grammar, and tone. (Ask friends to proofread, too.) • Use a simple, easy-to-read typeface. • Follow instructions in the job posting. If the employer asks for information—such as references or writing samples—provide it. • If you’re applying by e-mail, your cover letter should be contained in the e-mail. If you’re applying online and there’s no space indicated for a cover letter, put your cover letter in the comments section. • Don't let the informality of e-mail and text correspondence seep into your communications— whether e-mailed, online, or written—with potential employers.

* Organize your resume for the employer—Organize your resume information in a logical fashion. Keep descriptions clear and to the point. As possible, tailor your resume to the job and employer, emphasizing skills, experiences, abilities, and qualifications that match the job description.

* Customize your response—Address the hiring manager directly, if possible, and include the name of the company and the position for which it is hiring in your cover letter/e-mail response.

* Make it easy for the hiring manager—Use your name and the word "resume" in the e-mail subject line so it's easy to identify.

* Focus on the skills and abilities you can bring to the employer, not what you want from the job—In your cover letter, answer the questions: What can you do to make the hiring manager's

life easier? What can you do to help the company? This is your opportunity to market yourself and stand out from the other candidates. Your resume should support that.

* Be professional—Use a professional-sounding e-mail address or voice mail/answering machine message.
