Building Shockers, Building Professionals Issue 12 / 03.28.14
Spring 2014 Career Fair When you attend a career fair you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of the job market and specific jobs. You are also building your professional contact network. Students who attend career fairs effectively have a better chance of getting through the application process. Don’t underestimate the value of personal contact. Students who impress recruiters do some, if not all, of the following: • Dress appropriately • Present a professional resume • Know the company products or services • Approach recruiters with a smile and offer a firm handshake • Prepare a verbal summary of his/her background • Ask for a business card If career fairs were pointless, companies would not participate in them. Companies send representatives from human resources, usually someone from the university relations team. Some companies choose to send members of the technical team, the marketing department or employees who are graduates of the university. You never know who you will meet at the fair. Smaller companies might be represented by the president. Why would you miss out on the chance to introduce yourself to the president of the company? You may never have that opportunity again.

Your resume will be more effective if you focus on accomplishments, achievements and results rather than job duties. Example: Helped create flyers and posters.
Let’s ask questions about this statement. Was the person part of a team? Employers value teamwork, so let’s change helped to Worked in team of three. Now we have “Worked in team of three to create flyers and posters.” How were the flyers and posters used? The flyers and posters marketed new products. Stronger statement: Worked in team of three to create marketing pieces advertising new products. Ask the next logical question - What were the results of the marketing efforts? Business increased 25% the next quarter. Now we have a lot of good information, probably too much for one point, so we break it down into two accomplishment statements. The two new statements point out teamwork, creativity and results. *Created marketing pieces advertising new products, working with a team of three *Contributed to 25% increase in business for first quarter of FY09 Career counselors can help you perfect your resume for the Career Fair. Career Coffee Blog...By Jan Mead The Career Fair - why go? Why would you take time to attend the Spring Career Fair? Time from studying, extra-curricular activities, your job, your family or friends? I’ll tell you why! Attending our Career Fair will put you face-to-face with employers. It will give you the opportunity to become a real person rather than merely an electronic record. This is a huge advantage. Recruiters tell us the people they meet at Career Fairs have the chance to make much more of an impression on them than any record in their resume management systems. And, in order to realize this advantage all you need to do is spiff up – yourself and your resume – and come over to Koch Arena April 9 between 4:00 and 6:30pm. Some employers will be on the lookout for candidates for current openings. Some will be watching for future openings. All will be anxious to meet students and looking for talent. If employers are willing to devote time and money to come to campus to meet you, why wouldn’t you take the time and make the effort to walk over to Koch Arena and meet them? Abby Nelson, B.A., Integrated Marketing Communications, 2013, did and she said: “While attending a WSU Career Fair, I spoke with a representative and later landed an internship with their aerospace company. That internship gave me the skills needed for my own start-up marketing business.” So, get your suit cleaned. Iron your shirt. Shine your shoes. Print off several copies of your resume on bond resume paper. And, come to Koch Arena Wednesday, April 9 between 4:00 and 6:30pm. Make time! It’s the smart thing to do. And, you’re smart...you’re in college.
“Be ready to articulate your skills and your job target in a brief 30-60 seconds. The more contacts you make, the better chance you have of landing a job sooner than the average job seeker.” Pam Kanagy, Compass Aircraft Group “For a job candidate, our recommendation would be to do your research. Take some time and learn about the company... by doing some research, you will certainly network more effectively. It is an indicator of initiative and motivation.” Rick Ralston, SendThisFile, Inc.

There is an excitement felt as soon as you enter the Charles Koch Arena on any occasion – Convocation, sporting events, graduation, and the Spring 2014 Career Fair will be no different. The sounds of employers and students engaging in conversation will echo throughout the concourse on Wednesday, April 9 between 4:00 and 6:30 pm. Instead of jeans and t-shirts, attendees will be wearing interview attire and holding portfolios with resumes and business cards while viewing their uploaded version of the Wichita State Career Fair App. Employers will be stationed around the concourse, ready to network with students, recent graduates and alumni interested in learning about their job opportunities. This is the time to be professional, well-prepared, gracious and polite. Be inquisitive. Be an interested listener. Be a Shocker. Put on your best smile and professional air and wow the employers. Have your student ID ready for quick entry to the fair. If you have any questions during the event, the WSU Career Services staff members will be happy to assist you. There will always be someone at the front check-in area.

And now for the DON’Ts • Don’t come during the last half-hour of the Career Fair and expect to make all the contacts you planned. Be one of the first to arrive when the recruiters are fresh! • Don’t come to the fair with a group of friends. Interact with recruiters on your own. You won’t be hired in a group! • Don’t carry backpacks or large purses. Carry your freshly printed resumes in a professional-looking portfolio or small briefcase. • Don’t show up just to get the giveaways. Not cool.
