Building Shockers, Building Professionals Issue 12 / 03.28.14
Spring 2014 Career Fair When you attend a career fair you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of the job market and specific jobs. You are also building your professional contact network. Students who attend career fairs effectively have a better chance of getting through the application process. Don’t underestimate the value of personal contact. Students who impress recruiters do some, if not all, of the following: • Dress appropriately • Present a professional resume • Know the company products or services • Approach recruiters with a smile and offer a firm handshake • Prepare a verbal summary of his/her background • Ask for a business card If career fairs were pointless, companies would not participate in them. Companies send representatives from human resources, usually someone from the university relations team. Some companies choose to send members of the technical team, the marketing department or employees who are graduates of the university. You never know who you will meet at the fair. Smaller companies might be represented by the president. Why would you miss out on the chance to introduce yourself to the president of the company? You may never have that opportunity again.
