What makes Bayliss boats so desirable? A great ride, unmatched performance, and of course, the look.

Historically Speaking

Oregon Inlet - Gateway to the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

North Carolina has always had a strong boat building tradition. For more than three centuries, craftsmen have been building sturdy boats designed to withstand the rough waters of the Atlantic. During the late 1940s, boat builders on Harkers Island enlarged the flared bow and extended the planking, resulting in a “Carolina style” hull used today to build the most beautiful sportfishing boats available.

Boatbuilding comes naturally in Wanchese In the mid-20th century, Capt. Warren O’Neal pioneered the design and construction of eastern North Carolina sportfishing boats. Omie Tillett, who apprenticed under O’Neal, became a leader in his own right and essentially redefined the Outer Banks’ stronghold on custom sportfishing boatbuilding. His boat had a deeper hull than the Carteret County boats and sleeker deck line. Many fine boat builders in Dare County still use this style for their sportfishing boats because of its reputation of being fast and able to readily withstand the rough waters of Oregon Inlet. These hulls were designed to take on the unpredictable Atlantic seas without compromising a smooth ride. Carolina boats were originally built strictly for work, and were far from being known for having anything known as a yacht-like interior, however, today these boats are equipped for living in comfort and traveling in comfort abroad in search of great sport-fishing.

Bayliss

There are no textbooks or short cuts about how to build great sportfishing yachts. John Bayliss had to learn how to become a smart mate to become a good captain; and further, a good captain to become a great boat builder. His life-long experience on the water—in the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and Mexico; in both summer and winter; in good and adverse conditions; spending more than 200 days fishing each year—taught him what to expect from a quality yacht.

A lifetime on the water

Bayliss began his career as a mate in Hatteras Village in 1975 and became a captain in 1980. He ran his boat the Tarheel from 1980 to 1997, running charter trips from Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks. In 1993, he also began running trips from Cancun and Mexico. In 1997, Bayliss became captain of the Hatterascal for Hatteras Yachts; and in 1999, he ran the Bluewater for Blue Water Yacht Sales, out of Hampton, Virginia. Bayliss learned from these experiences what clients should realistically expect from a worthy yacht. His experience running dozens of boats led Bayliss to determine that there was a niche for top-shelf boats, boats that blended the best features from all the boats he had captained. He decided that producing these types of boats would culminate his life-long love for being on the water and living a life centralized around getting the most from your fishing experience. If there’s one thing Bayliss knows, it’s that the details are in the details. John’s goal became reality in 2002 when he opened Bayliss Boatworks in Wanchese, North Carolina.

“Ultimately, the plan is for you to just go fishing.”

The Plan

Planning is the most important part of the building process. To build the highest quality sportfishing yacht available, without compromising her finish, features, or performance, we at Bayliss Boatworks devote immeasurable attention to its refined details and superior craftsmanship. Collaborative planning between John Bayliss, the naval architect Robert Ullberg, and the client ensures that the finished yacht meets even the most specific goals of the client, and fulfills even the most demanding expectations.

Proper planning ensures perfection Incorporating contemporary and innovative design is a natural part of the planning process, whether this means a mezzanine cockpit layout, a center console with wrap-around seating on the bridge, or a fully customized forward master stateroom. We offer accurate, detailed information, giving you options for materials and finishes so that you may determine a budget that meets your needs, resulting in a boat you’ll love, and we’re proud to deliver. Like all great design, the entire planning process starts with a unique idea translated on a blank piece of paper. From there, the options are infinite, but the outcome is certain.

The more informed we all are, the smoother the process goes. And at Bayliss, that’s what we’re all about...building smooth fishing boats.

When it comes down to it, we just want to create a great fishing experience.

From tip to top, each Bayliss boat is uniquely beautiful.

Design

If you can imagine it, we can create it.

The beauty is truly in the details.

From the outset, we decided we wanted to build a very high quality sportfishing yacht, the finest of its class available. So it is extremely gratifying that in such a short period of time, the demand for our boats greatly exceeds our potential output.

We acknowledge that our process is not for everyone. But like us, our owners value meticulous attention to detail, a thoughtful, thorough planning process, and superior craftsmanship. A Bayliss Boat is well worth the wait.

We emphasize a quality experience throughout, and many of our customers have ordered a second or third hull since or before the completion of their first one. Because of our very limited production, there is typically a wait before construction begins, sometimes up to a year or more. A typical project takes up to twenty-four months to complete.

One of the first things you’ll notice about a Bayliss is its striking look — and that’s no accident. “Starting with our first boat we wanted a blend of a North Carolina and a south Florida look. Our goal was to have one of our boats pull into a marina and spark the question, ‘Where was that boat built?’ In this industry, that’s how you have to think. Aim to impress.

If getting there is only half of the battle, do it in style.

Elegance compliments performance We place high importance on what lies beneath the surface; the engine room, machinery spaces and of course, the visible interior. We receive a lot of valuable input from some very sharp owners and captains and we constantly try to raise the bar on every boat we build. Continually building off of the experience we gain from each project and the situations each one presents us is what pushes us to continually evolve as one of the most continuously sought after sportfishing yachts on the planet. We lay these boats out to become the example of how the rest of the industry should strive to build, and we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished.

Every imaginable option is addressed to ensure that a Bayliss boat is designed to meet all of the needs of each individual owner.

Craftsmanship

Our intimate staff of 45 come from quite dynamic backgrounds, ranging from lifetime skilled woodworkers and glassing experts to cabinetmakers and mechanical engineers. We employ only the finest craftsmen in their fields and we have a basic understanding that each of us is a necessary piece of a larger vision. Working as unified as we do, both in the shop, and with the subcontractors that we’ve hand-picked to join us, we are truly a gifted family. Building custom cockpits and bridges is one of our specialties and we use only the finest yacht-building materials. Her huge foredeck, house and bridge are built out of an okoume and foam sandwich. All interior and exterior surfaces are covered with fiberglass and faired and finished with Awlgrip. The net result is a strong, lightweight structure. Computer-controlled CNC routers cut our jigs, and our meticulous carpenters build the custom interior cabinetry, and trim by hand, shaping the finest veneers and hardwoods into beautifully sculpted customizations. The coldmolded wood construction method used to build our boats is more or less the standard in this niche market. Built on a disposable jig, her bottom is skinned with triple diagonal okoume and supported with laminated-fir longitudinal stringers. A foam core is used to lighten her marine plywood bulkheads and framing. This results in a hull that will withstand even the harshest conditions that our local proving ground has to offer.

We’re in the business of building boats that last for generations.

“We’re from the Outer Banks, we know boats.”

Boats crafted to last for generations We believe that our dedication to building the finest marlin-chasing boats, using only the most proven techniques and products that are available, results in a finished product that will ultimately be revered as the best in its class. Our boats are built to fish and to do so in style. So whether you’re at the helm, lounging at the bar below deck, or tied on to a thousand pound wet record off the back, you can be assurred that the boat you are on is in a class of its own. Not only should you feel confident in your capabilities when it comes to fishing, you can also remain confident that you are aboard a vessell that you can always depend on mechanically, even under the most trying situations.

A good team always ensures a great product.

Ownership

We build Bayliss boats to withstand the elements, rise to the occasion when called upon, and last long after we, the builders are gone. That is the way you have to approach building a boat of this caliber. We enjoy what we do and we take great pride in what we as a family produce day in and day out. The process we follow is long and could be considered tedious, but the end result is certainly worth the wait. There aren’t many boat builders available anymore that put so much into such a few gems as we do. And we know that. We take pride in putting our standards of quality and craftmanship before anything else. That’s why Bayliss boats are simply the best sportfishing yachts available. By putting everything we possibly can into our boats, leaving nothing on the table, we become a part of the fabric of each vessel. We’re Outer Bankers. We know what it means to build a quality product and back it up when it really counts. You won’t find any other group of employees that take ownership of their work like we do. What we produce in small increments, day to day, becomes something that our clientes invest in because of our approach. Once we are finished building a boat, it isn’t simply delivered and forgotten of. That’s simply where it physically changes hands.

Welcome to the family Once an owner is delivered a Bayliss, the real fun begins. You are assurred only the best service and support from our entire staff for the longevity of your ownership. You lucky dog. Thanks to the way we build our boats, there’s no part that we haven’t thoroughly inspected and know up and down. So when the time comes for service we know just what you need and our fully

equiped shop is set up to handle all of your needs. In other words, Bayliss boats are built for fishing, not sit in dry-dock waiting for repairs. We’ll help you take as good a care of your boat after you’ve assumed control of it as we did building it. And that’s just the way it should be, making ownership of a Bayliss a breeze.
