Where else would I have the opportunity to do research in a village in China as part of my Asian studies major? The education and personal growth I’ve experienced at Saint John’s has helped me articulate my values and realize how many possibilities there are for me. The faculty and students have become like a second family. Philip Whitcomb ’12 Major: Asian Studies Hometown: Marietta, Ga.

Fellows Society
In 1971, sixty-four people dedicated to the educational mission of Saint John’s University each stepped forward with a significant annual gift, and the Fellows Society was born. The Saint John’s Fellows Society is a distinguished group of alumni, parents and friends, who, year after year, set the pace for the Saint John’s University Annual Fund by making a gift of $1,000 or more. Today, this giving community has grown to more than 800 individuals. The Fellows have an extraordinary impact on Saint John’s – their philanthropy accounts for more than 70 percent of all Annual Fund support and provides an inspiring example for others. More important, their generosity enables Saint John’s to make a substantial and sustained investment in our students. Thanks in large part to the Fellows, Saint John’s is able to provide the small classes, mentoring relationships and experiential learning that prepare young men to lead, serve and shape our world for the better. This leadership giving is critically important to them and to the strength and vitality of Saint John’s. We invite you to make a profound difference by becoming a member of the Saint John’s Fellows Society.

I call it putting my money where my values are. I see the tangible impact the Annual Fund makes for students through scholarships and financial aid, the university’s biggest needs. The Fellows program is a good way for me to give back to an organization that has provided me with so much and to strengthen it for the future.

Fellows Benefits
Making the Saint John’s experience possible for today’s students is one of the principal benefits of Fellows Society membership. However, as members of this leadership giving community, Fellows receive a variety of additional benefits:
Listing at appropriate Fellows Level in the annual Honor Roll of Donors
Fellows Society medallions, plaque and lapel pin
Invitation to Saint John’s Day, the annual leadership donor recognition event
Special recognition at other key Saint John’s events
“
Life is about giving and receiving. And when you give, you want to know that the recipients are benefiting. The Annual Fund directly benefits a large percentage of Saint John’s students. Giving at the Fellows level lets me know that I’m doing my part to help current Saint John’s students succeed. And I’m returning the same benefits that I received. Giving and receiving!

Becoming a Fellow
Yearly Fellows Society membership is automatic with a total Annual Fund contribution of $1,000 or more in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Fellows gifts can be mailed to the Annual Fund office at P.O. Box 7222, Collegeville, MN 56321-7222. Gifts can also be made via credit card by calling 1-800-6357303 or visiting www.supportsju.com. In addition there are several other ways to become a Fellow: Automated Gift Plans Fellows can set up electronic funds transfers from their checking account or arrange for their credit cards to be charged automatically. Automated Gift Plans remain in effect until canceled or changed by the donor. Pledges Fellows can also set up a pledge to Saint John’s and receive reminders via mail annually, semi-annually or quarterly. Pledge commitments can be made for just one year or for several years at once. Gifts of Securities Making a gift of assets like common stock or mutual fund shares can offer you significant tax advantages. By giving highly appreciated shares directly to Saint John’s, many Fellows are able to avoid long-term capital gains taxes and receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the securities. Matching Gifts Many corporations will match their employees’ charitable contributions (or even contribute double or triple the amount), and these corporate matching gifts can be counted toward Fellows Society membership. Consult your human resources office for a matching gift form.

To whom much is given, much is expected reflects our thoughts on philanthropy to Ben and Dan’s alma mater. Our young men were fortunate to attend SJU. It is a pleasure to write our contribution check each year knowing we are voluntarily repaying generous scholarships – meeting our personal goals as well as making opportunities available to others.
