The mantra “Our Family vs. their team” is one that our soccer family started using in 2013. It is not new to Collegeville as its ethos is embedded deeply in the Johnnie experience and has been since 1857. The following is an excerpt from our Core Values that helps our young men grasp what it means. This remarkably noble, self-sacrificing, generous human being always places the family before himself. He knows that in the end athletes do not miss the trophies. They miss being part of something bigger than themselves. He refuses to lose composure over ridiculous issues, live in fragile states of emotional catharsis, or create crises where none should exist. “No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main . . . any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

To cultivate rootedness and a shared sense of mission.

~ John Donne For Whom the Bell Tolls BENEDICTINE VALUE: COMMUNITY LIVING

My name is Brian Bruess and, as of July 1, I am president of both College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University – the first time both of those titles have been held concurrently. In the short time that my wife Carol and I have been here, we have both certainly felt the engaging welcome of this community. The Benedictine hospitality lives up to its billing. Thank you to those who have reached out with greetings and well wishes. That sense of community was certainly one of the most powerful forces drawing Carol and me to this opportunity, but not the only There’sone.the tradition of academic rigor that Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s have upheld for well over a century. The education our students receive can change lives, impact families and change the direction of whole communities. That’s an exciting thing to be part of, and I look forward to building on those outcomes in the coming years.

Go Bennies! Johnnie Soccer 2022 05 HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING

And, of course, we were drawn here by these students. The unique structure of this integrated relationship attracts and produces women who lead with passion and confidence. It attracts and produces men of character and wisdom who will bring their best to everything they do.

Like all of our Bennie and Johnnie competitors, these are student-athletes in the finest sense of both those words. As we cheer for today’s performances on the field, let’s all commit to cheering a little louder in recognition of the performances we don’t see – in the classroom, in the lab and in service to their church or community. Johnnies!

Message from the president Welcome (and thanks for the welcome)!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Go

And in that spirit, I’m glad you’re here with us today and part of another season in the storied tradition of Johnnies soccer.

There’s the strength and impact of the legendary alum networks that stretch from these campuses, around the world.

Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s grads have always been present for each other, for today’s students and for these institutions, generously serving as mentors, resources and benefactors. I look forward to meeting and connecting with as many of you as possible and learning the heart of that connection.

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – As John Haws ’99 prepares to start his 13th season as head coach of the Saint John’s University soccer team in 2022, there is plenty to be optimistic about.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved changes to overtime rules in April for both the regular season and the postseason, effective for the 2022 season.

No More OT

Three of the four Johnnies who were named to the 2021 All-MIAC soccer team return this fall. Senior midfielder Matt D. Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) was named to the first team and senior defender Aidan Becken (Prior Lake, Minn.) joined Siefken as honorable mention. The four honorees started all 10 MIAC games this fall.

The Johnnies finished sixth in the MIAC with a 4-6 record (8-9-1 overall) and made their 10th trip to the semifinals in 11 MIAC Playoff appearances last fall.

HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING SEASON PREVIEW

Senior midfielder Drew Engel (De Pere, Wis.) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team last fall and returns in 2022 thanks to an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SJU’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president for the 202122 academic year, Engel totaled six points (2g/2a) and the game-winning goal - his first collegiate tally - against Wisconsin-Platteville - last season.

SJU’s lone non-returner who earned All-MIAC recognition last fall, Tommy Picka ’22, led the team in points, both in conference play (8; 2g/4a) and overall (14; 4g/6a). He also led SJU in game-winning goals with three (two in MIAC games), including the thrilling tally in overtime at then-No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus that sent the Johnnies to the MIAC semifinals. Picka ended his SJU career with 21 points (6g/9a) in 51 games.

Johnnie Soccer 2022 07

For the regular season, overtime has been eliminated. Meaning, if a game is tied after regulation (90 minutes), it will end in a tie. Previously, teams played two 10-minute overtime periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie. In the MIAC Playoffs and NCAA Tournament, the suddenvictory component has been eliminated and teams will play two, 10-minute overtime periods instead. In addition, when a substitution is made by the winning team in the last five minutes of the second overtime, the game clock will stop. If the game remains tied, a penalty-kick shootout will be held to determine the winner.

All-Region In Net Siefken returns in net for SJU after being named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region IX third team as a freshman last fall. He finished third in the MIAC with a 0.97 GAA and totaled a 4-6 record with two shutouts and 39 saves (.796) in conference play and was named All-MIAC honorable mention. He made 17 starts overall, including the Johnnies’ final 1,116 minutes in net, and posted a 7-9-1 record. His 79 saves in all games were good for third in the league.

All-MIAC honorable mention as a freshman defender in 2019, Anderson led SJU in shots (23) and shots on goal (14) in conference play and finished with six points (2g/2a).

Overall, Anderson was one of three Johnnies to start all 18 games and led the team with five goals, while finishing second in points with 13. He enters the 2022 season with 22 points (8g/6a) in 40 career games.

SJU returns 10 of the 12 student-athletes who recorded multiple points last fall, and 80 percent (64 of 80) the team’s total points overall, as well as its All-Region goalkeeper in sophomore Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North). In addition, eight incoming freshmen were Minnesota All-State selections last fall, including two of the state’s top five scorers and three in the top 20. The crop includes forward Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels), who was a United Soccer Coaches All-American - one of 88 honorees nationwide - and Minnesota’s Mr. Soccer in Class AA.

All-MIAC Returners

Not only do the Johnnies return the bulk of last season’s offensive production, but the program also welcomes an influx of decorated freshmen.

GARY’S OPENED IN 1982. In 1982, the Johnnies went 9-0 and have had a winning record ever since. Coincidence? We think NOT! Thank you CSB and SJU Students, Staff & Alumni for over 40 great years!

The first of six home games, the Johnnies’ opener on the Haws Field pitch - Sept. 17 against Saint Mary’s - also starts the MIAC schedule. The home opener is the latest on the fall calendar since 1992, when SJU hosted St. Olaf on Sept. 19. That game against the Oles was held 13 days after SJU opened the season with a pair of non-conference matches in Colorado over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 5-6).

SJU opens the 2022 season Sept. 1 at Minnesota-Morris before traveling to California for a neutral-site game Sept. 3 against Cal Lutheran at UC-Santa Cruz. The Johnnies face the host Banana Slugs Sept. 5 to wrap the west-coast trip and travel to Wisconsin Sept. 10-11 for two more non-conference games – at Wisconsin-Platteville and Wisconsin-Whitewater, respectively. The Johnnies host Wisconsin-Eau Claire Oct. 18 in Collegeville for the fifth and final non-conference tilt.

SJU wraps up the first month of the competitive season Sept. 28 against Concordia-Moorhead and hosts four home games in October, beginning with another Wednesday contest Oct. 12 against Bethel. The Johnnies’ final three home games are in a row - Oct. 18 (WisconsinEau Claire), Oct. 22 (Macalester) and Oct. 26 (St. Scholastica) - before the team visits Carleton Oct. 29 for the regular-season finale. The Johnnies are 38-28-5 (.570) in nine seasons at Haws Field. Twenty-one of the 28 losses were decided by one goal. MIAC Playoffs For the seventh consecutive season, the MIAC Playoffs will include six teams in 2021. The first round is scheduled for Nov. 1, followed by the semifinals Nov. 2. The MIAC Playoff Championship, which will decide the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs, is set for Nov. 5. The contest’s higher seed will host the games in all three rounds.

HAWS FIELD

Haws Field, named in honor of retired Saint John’s University soccer coach Pat Haws, opened for the 2013 soccer season. Key features of Haws Field include a natural grass playing surface, permanent team dugouts, bleacher, natural seating and a scoreboard.

The field is made up of “natural turf,” a sand-peat mixture withan engineered sub-base to allow for proper drainage throughout the year. This is designed to ensure that an excess of water will not cause significant damage to the pitch, something that is always a concern for any team with a grass field.

The new soccer field was part of a $16 million athletic facilities renovation project at SJU.

The new renovations to the pitch allows for fans to sit closer to the field of play, especially with the retaining wall running along the touch and end lines. The complex is “light ready,” meaning that conduit is in place for future consideration.

The total cost of the project was $600,000, of which $400,000 came from a generous gift from Coborn’s, Inc.

But with everything happening in recent years – the COVID pandemic, inflation, social unrest, the loss of a prominent federal loan program and changing student demographics, among other reasons – institutions across the country face a myriad of problems. They need new innovations to help deal with the realities of the higher education landscape.

28 Saint John’s University In these challenging times for higher education, Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict are reaching out to their most precious resources – their alumni and alumnae – to make invaluable connections with future generations of Johnnies and Bennies.

“Everybody wants to help – they just don’t know how,” Beirne said. “The easy thing for us to say is ‘refer a student.’ “How? Go to the web site. Go to our student page. You can tell students you’re going to give them $1,000 a year.” And that’s a great feeling – for everyone involved.

IA PARTNERSENROLLMENT

“The power of a real alum talking with a real student faceto-face and encouraging them to look at Saint John’s and Saint Ben’s – that’s the most valuable thing we’ve got,” Beirne said. “We have the passion of alums who can speak to the transformative experience of being Johnnies and Bennies. I see it all the time.” For more information, contact Beirne at mbeirne@csbsju.edu.

Through an associated referral program, it also allows alums to offer $1,000 annual scholarships to prospective CSB and SJU students.

“This is kind of a new way to envision a partnership with our alums, a more tangible, real way to contribute,” Beirne said. ”Our alums can be a little more engaged in the process.” That engagement can mean serving as an admission event panelist, a college fair assistant or as a young alum ambassador. It can provide support as an admitted student mentor or create a personal video message that can be shared with prospective students and their families.

That’s why CSB and SJU jointly launched the Enrollment Partners Program (csbsju.edu/admission/enroll-partners), which is in its fourth year and gives 110 alum volunteers a myriad of opportunities to help.

“We’ve had a wonderful partnership and relation with our alums for decades, but we needed to have something more formalized,” Beirne said.

“We’ve been relying on our alums for many reasons over the years,” said Matt Beirne, Director of Admission at Saint John’s and Saint Benedict. “We rely on them for word-ofmouth and referrals, and also a lot of our alums have sent their children to Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s.”

The long-standing Coordinate Relationship between CSB and SJU demonstrates a history of delivering excellent outcomes through an outstanding joint academic program. Strong Integration is a natural extension and strengthening of our current relationship. It is not a merger of the two institutions; the college and university will remain two separate institutions aligned with their respective sponsoring monastic communities. Strong Integration necessitates no changes to the joint academic program, the admission of students or the separate conferring of degrees. Rather, Strong Integration will ensure that future students are educated by a thriving CSB and SJU. It will allow the college and university to continue delivering a superior liberal arts education with maximal effectiveness in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving higher education landscape. The collaborative work of our two institutions and two founding monastic communities is a vital part of what makes the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University such beloved and special places. Our work has been guided throughout by the Benedictine Values, the institutions’ missions, and the needs of our students, and we are proud to take this historic step in our shared history. We want to channel the best of both schools in new and exciting ways while still maintaining the individual identities of each. Strong Integration will further solidify already-deep ties while still celebrating each school as a college for women and a men’s university. With all of us working together, Bennies and Johnnies will continue writing new and limitless chapters of our shared history in the years to come. INTEGRATION
