All-Americans: Two 2021 All-Americans, senior tight end Alex Larson and senior defensive lineman Michael Wozniak, made their presence known in last Saturday’s season opener. Larson caught a team-high nine passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns, while Wozniak disrupted the Warhawks’ backfield all afternoon and totaled three sacks. The pair of receiving touchdowns enabled Larson to move into seventh place on SJU’s all-time list for tight ends with 10, in only 12 games played at the position. Wozniak now has an eye-popping 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in his last three games.
Back With an Impact: A number of Johnnies, who returned following substantial injuries suffered last year, made big plays in the win over Whitewater. Senior cornerback John Kohler played all 14 games (13 starts) as a sophomore at safety in 2019, but suffered an injury prior to the 2021 season and missed all of last year. He wrestled away an interception on UWW’s first possession of the game. Junior quarterback Aaron Syverson made his first start behind center since he suffered a season-ending leg injury Oct. 23 at Gustavus Adolphus, and finished 25 of 34 passing for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Senior tight end Zach Jungels’ first collegiate reception was a seven-yard touchdown from Syverson that gave SJU an 18-10 lead in the third quarter.

Season-Opening Success Continues: SJU is now 80-28-3 (.734) all-time in its season opener, including a 9-0 record under the direction of Fasching. The Johnnies have won each of their last 17 season openers and 34 of their last 38.

Series History: Today’s game is the 10th meeting between Saint John’s and Wisconsin-River Falls going back to 1937, and the first since the 2014 season opener. The Johnnies are 8-1 all-time against the Falcons, including a 4-1 record here in Collegeville. SJU’s lone home loss in the series occurred in the first meeting on Oct. 2, 1937 (a 12-6 score). With last Saturday’s win over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the books, SJU is now 34-14 against members of the WIAC.

Today’s Match up: Saint John’s took advantage of two safeties and three turnovers by then-No. 4 WisconsinWhitewater in a 24-10 win last Saturday (Sept. 3) here in Collegeville. The Johnnies held the Warhawks to just 12 total yards on five fourth-quarter possessions with the game’s outcome still well in doubt. In fact, UWW totaled only four yards, combined, on its final seven offensive drives of the game. Wisconsin-River Falls, meanwhile, overpowered Elmhurst (Ill.) with wide statistical margins in total offense (560-79), passing yards (328-48) and first downs (33-6) in a 63-0 victory. The Falcons scored 39 points in the second quarter. UWRF was ranked No. 18 in D3football.com’s preseason poll and was picked to finish third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) preseason coaches poll. River Falls tied a program record with nine wins (9-2 record) in 2021, including a 5-2 mark to finish third in the WIAC, and ended the season with a 48-27 win over Washington (Mo.) in the inaugural Culver’s Isthmus Bowl.
DEERWOOD BANK PRESENTS
SJU has won or shared 35 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, 13 more than any other member school, and the program’s current streak of sevenstraight Division III playoff berths has surpassed its own conference record.
Johnnie home games are truly an autumn playground: the vivid fall colors blazing from the trees in the woods surrounding the natural bowl that forms Clemens Stadium, the smoke rising from the grills behind the concession stands (home to the uniquely incredible heavenly apples) and, of course, the crowds.
And then there is the atmosphere.
A TRADITION UNRIVALED
On the basis of on-field accomplishments alone, the Saint John’s University football team ranks among the nation’s elite. Through the years, the Johnnies have won four national championships at either the NAIA or NCAA Division III level (1965, 1965, 1976 and 2003), and have made 31 postseason appearances.
Four Johnnies have won the Gagliardi Award, named in honor of legendary former SJU head coach John Gagliardi and handed out annually to the top player in Division III, and the program can boast 144 All-Americans and 34 Academic All-Americans. But what makes football at Saint John’s special goes well beyond even all those numbers. During his 60 seasons in Collegeville, Gagliardi – whose 489 career victories are the most in college football history – developed his famous list of No’s which still form the program’s core values. That list - which includes no whistles, no tackling in practice (players wear shorts/sweats and shoulder pads) and no blocking sleds or tackling dummies - has drawn national media interest over the years from venerable outlets such as Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, the Today Show and many, many others.
SJU consistently ranks among the national leaders in attendance at the NCAA Division III level and has led the way 11 times since 2005. Since the 2000 season, the program has recorded a single-game attendance number of 10,000 or more 16 times. That included a crowd of 17,327 for a match up against St. Thomas in 2015, a game preceded by a live broadcast of ESPN’s “Sports Center on the Road” program. Add it all up and you have something beyond amazing. You have … a tradition unrivaled.

NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL PRESENTS MIAC UPDATE
GARY’S OPENED IN 1982. In 1982, the Johnnies went 9-0 and have had a winning record ever since. Coincidence? We think NOT! Thank you CSB and SJU Students, Staff & Alumni for over 40 great years!
BEHIND THE SCENES JIM PLATTEN Game Day 09.10.22 | Johnnie Football 09 HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING
“I just find great value in being able to serve others,” he said. “Being in the equipment room, and getting to know all these guys, is something I’ve really enjoyed. I’ve found a great fit for myself here.
“And that’s kind of evolved into my life’s passion.” Indeed, Platten has been in the Johnnies’ equipment room ever since, volunteering his time at practice and games while befriending multiple generations of players and their families.
“I always joke that I feel like I get around 200 new sons every fall.” Those players – and anyone else who follows the program closely – have come to know Platten as the “shorts guy.” It’s a title that springs from his choice of attire regardless of the weather conditions.
“I remember talking to John about superstitions and he knew I usually wore shorts to all the games,” said Platten, who has spent his career in healthcare administration and currently works for M Health Fairview. “He said ‘That’s our good luck charm. You have to keep doing it.’ So I’ve been wearing them ever since in honor of him.
Of course, Platten’s impact at SJU goes far beyond the football field. He was a class agent for more than three decades, he’s chaired the school’s Red Tie Gala and he’s served on numerous alumni, fundraising and reunion committees. He also served a term as president of the SJU Alumni Association board of directors. In 2014, he received the Father Walter Reger Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest honor the Alumni Association bestows.
“I believe so strongly in what Saint John’s is, not only as an institution, but as a community,” said Platten, who first arrived in Collegeville as a freshman at Saint John’s Preparatory School in the fall of 1966. “There’s a t-shirt that says ‘Once a Johnnie, always a Johnnie.’ And there’s a lot of truth to that. Your connection to this school doesn’t end when you graduate. It’s a lifelong thing.”
When Jim Platten originally offered to help, he had no idea he was beginning an involvement with the Saint John’s University football program that has reached 24 years – and counting.
“There are times it gets pretty cold. I remember that (NCAA Division III national semifinal) at Wisconsin-Whitewater (in December 2019) being pretty brisk. There have been a bunch of other times I’ve been wearing them in the middle of snowstorms. I’m sure some people watching have been pretty sure they should call and have an emergency hold put on that crazy guy out there in shorts. But it’s worked out OK.”
“I made the mistake of talking to (former head coach) John Gagliardi one day and telling him ‘If you need help with anything, just let me know,’” recalls Platten, a 1974 SJU graduate. “He said ‘Why don’t you give (former equipment manager) LeRoy (Henkemeyer) a hand.’
Kohler, meanwhile, earned a starting job at safety as a sophomore in 2019 – finishing with 57 tackles and two interceptions. But a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in a pickup basketball game prior to last season kept him out all year. That meant – because of the impact of COVID in 2020 – he hadn’t played a game in almost two full years prior to last weekend’s season opener against Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Seymour has become the ultimate utility player in the SJU linebacking corps. Last year, he played both inside and outside while helping the Johnnies to a MIAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

“I think I’ve become more of a leader as my career has gone along,” he said. “Last year, especially, because I had to learn all the linebacking positions. I’d always been more of an inside linebacker, but they had me playing outside, too. That was a little bit of a challenge, but I think it made me a lot more versatile as a player.
SEYMOUR & KOHLER
The global business leadership major finished with 35 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, and recorded one interception. That came on the heels playing in all 14 games as a sophomore in 2019, recording 13 tackles as SJU advanced to the Division III semifinals for the first time since 2003. (The Johnnies did not play games in 2020 due to COVID).

John Kohler and Carter Seymour weren’t ready to be done with football just yet. That’s why both Saint John’s University senior defensive veterans chose to use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the impact of COVID-19 and return this season.
“I just want to play wherever I can help the team most.”
“You only get so many years of football,” said Seymour, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker out of New Prague High School. “It’s not like other sports that you can keep playing for years to come. So when I had the chance to play one more year, and to get one last shot at winning a national championship, I had to take it.”

Game Day 09.10.22 | Johnnie Football 11 HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING
“(The injury) was a big part of why I wanted to come back,” said Kohler, a 6-foot, 190-pound graduate of Rice Lake (Wisconsin) High School. “There was no way I wanted to let my football career end on a down note like that. I wanted to get at least one more season back.” Kohler has switched positions this fall, moving from safety to cornerback. But it’s really a return to the spot where he’s most comfortable. He was a cornerback in high school and during his freshman season at SJU. “I only switched to safety four days before the first game (in 2019), so that was actually a way bigger adjustment,” he said. “I was learning a lot on the fly. Cornerback is a position that feels more natural to me.” Johnnies head coach Gary Fasching said both players bring a lot of valuable experience to the fold. “We’re glad to have them both back,” he said. “These are each guys who could have graduated, but chose to return. That says something right there about how competitive they are.”
“They wanted to come back and play one more year. And, typically, the guys we’ve had come back for fifth seasons end up performing at pretty high levels.” Both players will graduate after this semester. Kohler already is applying to medical schools with an eye on possibly becoming an orthopedic surgeon or working in ophthalmology. Seymour has started a full-time position in operations at Granite Logistics in nearby Sartell, even as he finishes his classwork at SJU. But they say they are cherishing every moment they still get to spend on the football field. “Gary always says our goals here should be nothing less than winning a MIAC championship and getting to the playoffs,” Kohler said. “Then, hopefully trying to win a national title. “This team has so much potential coming back. I’m really excited to see how far we can go.” 320-259-4100 StCloudOrthopedics.com

Part Homecoming/Reunion, part culinary wonderland, all Johnnie magic. That’s the best way to describe the official SJU Tailgate, which can be found prior to every Johnnie home game in the athletic field parking lots adjacent to Gagliardi Field, Haws Field (soccer), Becker Park (baseball) and the Chang Tennis Complex. As the smoke from a multitude of grills drifts upward past the mass of red and white tents and into the autumn sky, thousands of Johnnie fans can be found enjoying friends, food and beverages while they await the opening kickoff. Parking spaces in the tailgate lot are paid, reserved spots. But walk-ins are always welcome, meaning anyone is welcome to walk down and join the festivities.

Saint John’s University vs. UW-River Falls
20&STRENGTHCONDITIONING
When it comes to training, the right facilities are important. Having the right people in place to staff them is just as Luckily, critical.Saint John’s University has both. The 5,600-feet McGlynn Fitness Center - which was made possible by a generous gift from the Burt McGlynn family, and is open to all students and alums - is equipped with a full range of free weights, upper body, lower body and full core machines, and cardiovascular machines such as treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bicycles.
SJU athletes also have an exceptional resource on which to draw in assistant athletic trainer and head strength and conditioning coach Justin Rost, who is now in his 10th season in Collegeville. “From a football standpoint, when I was hired, one of the things I saw as a necessity when it came to getting our program back to the top of the heap (in the MIAC) was having a full-time strength and conditioning coach at Saint John’s who could work with our players year-round,” Johnnies head coach Gary Fasching said. “Justin came in with a great plan and he’s stuck with it. All of our guys who have worked with him have gained valuable speed, muscle and strength. He’s been a big part of our success the past nine years.” Rost earned his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine from Northwestern College (Iowa), then received his master’s degree in exercise science and education from Wayne State (Nebraska). Prior to arriving at SJU, he was the head athletic trainer for football and wrestling at Briar Cliff (Iowa) from 2011-13. He then earned his certified strength and conditioning specialist licensure, allowing him to perform his dual position at SJU. “If you are persistent you’ll achieve it,” Rost said, summing up his training philosophy. “If you’re consistent you’ll keep it.”

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Game Day 09.10.22 | Johnnie Football 23 HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING
Welcome to Clemens Stadium for this week’s match-up between Saint John’s University and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. This strong tradition of attendance and support for Johnnie football is remarkable to see. It’s delightful to have so many of you here on campus. If it’s been a while, you may be wondering, “What’s new at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University”? Well, not to be too glib about it, but I’m new. Having a single person installed as president of both schools is a big change. And it’s not the only one. In January, the boards of trustees were restructured to form what we call the Common Boards: One set of trustees serving two distinct roles in representing both institutions, with a fiduciary responsibility to each. At the same time, a number of internal administrative functions – things like marketing – were restructured to create single teams serving both schools. We call it “strong integration.” It’s the evolution of the coordinate relationship that has connected Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s for nearly 50 years. It is a carefully discerned response to significant challenges and headwinds that face all of higher education, and an approach that streamlines processes as well as decision-making. Strong integrations is a structure that allows us to be both nimble and flexible as it positions us to continue offering a transformative educational experience – generating remarkable outcomes – for years to come. What it is not is a merger. No assets have changed hands in this transition. Both institutions continue to operate as two separate 501(c)(3) entities. More importantly, both institutions retain their distinct missions.
Now is the time to make these changes, and I am thrilled and honored to play a part. As I mentioned, there are significant societal and demographic challenges facing us right now and in the immediate future and at this moment, Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s are able to proactively address those challenges from healthy positions of strength. Go Johnnies! Go Bennies!
What’s new at CSB and SJU?
Saint John’s will always provide “young men a distinctive residential liberal arts education, preparing them to reach their full potential and instilling in them the values and aspiration to lead lives of significance.”
Saint Ben’s will continue to “provide for women the best undergraduate residential liberal arts education along with select graduate programs, in the Catholic and Benedictine traditions.”
Game Day 09.10.22 | Johnnie Football 25 HOMEITBRINGHOMEITBRING SENTRY BANK PRESENTS LAST WEEK IN PICTURES Here is a look back at the Johnnies’ big 24-10 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater last Saturday at Clemens Stadium.
“We went to a few games over the years,” Murphy said. “I always loved coming here because the campus is so beautiful. Now I guess it’s kind of come full circle in a way.”
“I didn’t come to Saint John’s just because of my dad, I learned about Saint John’s through him, and now I’m making my own path here.”
“I know it may seem kind of weird to make a change like this after going with one name for 19 years,” he said. “But, in the back of my mind, I’d always thought that one day I’d take on my paternal last name. Thinking about it long-range, when I start a family, I’d like to be able to carry on that lineage.”

No matter what name is listed on his helmet, the Johnnies coaching staff is grateful to have Murphy back. After a 2019 season in which SJU was 2 of 7 on field goal attempts and 60-for-77 on extra point tries, the Sioux Falls (South Dakota) O’Gorman High School graduate brought needed stability to the kicking game last fall. He was 4-for-6 on field goal attempts and 63-for-66 on PATs.
The last name may have changed, but Conor Murphy hopes the result on the field remains the same this season.
“There was a bit of an adjustment period right away, but I caught on pretty quickly,” he said. “I didn’t come in here expecting to be the starter, but I knew there was going to be an open competition for the job, and I felt like I had the ability to win it.” His first college kick came following a touchdown catch by tight end Alex Larson in the first quarter of the Johnnies’ 2021 season-opener against Aurora (Illinois) before a crowd of almost 9,000 at Clemens Stadium. That seems like a situation that could rattle a freshman, but Murphy said he wasn’t fazed.
The Saint John’s University sophomore kicker went by Conor Pavelko through his freshman year of college, but elected to take his father’s last name prior to the start of this season. It’s a decision he says had the support of both his parents – his mother, Nancy Pavelko, and father, Kevin Murphy. He is keeping Pavelko as a second middle name to maintain the connection with his mother and his brother Brandon.
“I’ve played in front of big crowds before,” he said. “Our high school played in a game called the Dakota Bowl every year, and that game sometimes draws crowds of close to 10,000. So I had a sense of what this would be like.” Murphy also witnessed the atmosphere surrounding SJU football several times growing up. His father played football for the Johnnies and graduated in 1985.

When you enroll at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, you’re not just signing up for what many of our alums will tell you were four of the greatest years of their lives, you’re also embarking through your gateway to a first job and a lifetime of career success.
In 2021, the career experts at Zippia named SJU and CSB as the No. 1 and 2 schools in Minnesota when it comes to getting a job. In fact, 97 percent of our students are employed, in graduate school or engaged in full-time service work within one year of graduation.

30 Saint John’s University vs. UW-River Falls PRESENTS
“We’ve had a wonderful partnership and relation with our alums for decades, but we needed to have something more formalized,” Beirne said. That’s why CSB and SJU jointly launched the Enrollment Partners Program (csbsju.edu/admission/enroll-partners), which is in its fourth year and gives 110 alum volunteers a myriad of opportunities to help.

“We’ve been relying on our alums for many reasons over the years,” said Matt Beirne, Director of Admission at Saint John’s and Saint Benedict. “We rely on them for word-ofmouth and referrals, and also a lot of our alums have sent their children to Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s.”
This fall, campus is alive and engaged and everyone’s back. So let’s celebrate with Homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 1 , featuring Johnnie football versus Concordia. Lots to do. Lots to explore. Lots to recall. Come see it all! Visit csbsjuhomecoming.com for details.
“This is kind of a new way to envision a partnership with our alums, a more tangible, real way to contribute,” Beirne said. ”Our alums can be a little more engaged in the process.”
With everything happening in recent years – the COVID pandemic, inflation, social unrest, the loss of a prominent federal loan program and changing student demographics, among other reasons – institutions across the country face a myriad of problems. They need new innovations to help deal with the realities of the higher education landscape.
“The power of a real alum talking with a real student faceto-face and encouraging them to look at Saint John’s and Saint Ben’s – that’s the most valuable thing we’ve got,” Beirne said. “We have the passion of alums who can speak to the transformative experience of being Johnnies and Bennies. I see it all the time.” For more information, contact Beirne at mbeirne@csbsju.edu.
That engagement can mean serving as an admission event panelist, a college fair assistant or as a young alum ambassador. It can provide support as an admitted student mentor or create a personal video message that can be shared with prospective students and their families. Through an associated referral program, it also allows alums to offer $1,000 annual scholarships to prospective CSB and SJU students.
“Everybody wants to help – they just don’t know how,” Beirne said. “The easy thing for us to say is ‘refer a student.’ “How? Go to the web site. Go to our student page. You can tell students you’re going to give them $1,000 a year.” That’s a great feeling – for everyone involved.
In these challenging times for higher education, Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict are reaching out to their most precious resources – their alumni and alumnae – to make invaluable connections with future generations of Johnnies and Bennies.
