VIRTUOSITY

KAKI KING

THE NECK IS A BRIDGE TO THE BODY

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 • 7:30 pm

Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, Saint John’s University

A SPECIALLY CUSTOMIZED OVATION ADAMAS GUITAR BECOMES THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THIS LUMINOUS, GROUNDBREAKING CONCERT. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” composer and guitarist Kaki King earned critical acclaim for her eclectic mix of unusual tunings, complex fingerstyle picking and slap bass techniques. In her latest work, “The Neck is a Bridge to the Body,” she uses her guitar in an entirely new way: as a projection screen. This performance is King at her visionary best: deconstructing and redefining the role of solo instrumentalist with a playlist that ranges from acoustic to high-voltage rock songs, all while projections illuminate and transform her guitar.

HIP CHARM

THE WESTERLIES SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23 • 7:30pm Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, Saint John’s University

IMAGINE BRASS WITH A PINCH OF FOLK, A DASH OF SASS AND A HEAP OF AMAZING TALENT. This self-described “accidental brass quartet” takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from the West to the East. NPR's “Fresh Air” called them “skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers.” The Westerlies explore jazz, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that’s intellectually rigorous, freshly hip and tenderly folksy. Equally at home in concert halls and living rooms, The Westerlies will blow you away with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band and the charm of your best friend's band.

OFF THE STAGE, INTO OUR LIVES A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF THE FINE ARTS SERIES IS THE VISION THAT INTIMATE, DIRECT INTERACTION WITH ARTISTS STRENGTHENS AND ENRICHES OUR COMMUNITY. Nearly every artist who performs on our stages also connects with our community through a variety of unique workshops, masterclasses, pop up concerts, school assembly performances or small group discussions. Our artists have worked at the St. Cloud VA Healthcare System, in hospice homes and youth detention facilities; they have lead DJing workshops at the Boys & Girls Club and taught acting workshops for both high school theater students and senior citizens. OUR ENGAGEMENT PRIORITIES INCLUDE PROVIDING ACCESS TO ARTS EXPERIENCES TO: • K-12 students across the region • CSB/SJU students through creative, multidisciplinary programs • Greater central MN community members
