SEASON PREVIEW The 2022-23 hockey season was full of highlights at Saint John’s University.
3.18 GAA and a .888 save percentage (174 saves).
The Johnnies finished 9-5-2 in MIAC play and 13-10-3 overall, placing third in the final regular-season conference standings and making their fifth consecutive appearance in the MIAC playoffs. That record included a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind overtime victory over Augsburg outdoors under the lights at Polar Lakes Park in White Bear Township as part of Hockey Day in Minnesota weekend. Three All-MIAC selections, and seven of the 10 players who recorded 10 points or more, return as head coach Doug Schueller begins his 16th season at the school. Joining them are 10 newcomers – nine freshmen and a sophomore transfer. Here is a more detailed look at the 202324 Johnnies:
Olsen
Crosby
Senior Leaders SJU returns a pair of senior forwards from Edina – Lewis Crosby and Max Borst – who totaled 17 points or more last season. A two-time All-MIAC selection, Crosby played all 26 games and totaled 22 points (7g/15a) with a team-leading 90 shots in 2022-23. He led the team with 13 powerplay points (5g/8a) and was second in both assists (15) and power-play goals (5). The scoresheet was not the only place Crosby made an impact as he led the MIAC, both overall (.608/400-258) and in conference play (.597/244-165), in the faceoff circle.
Huber
Borst
Howe
Returning Netminders The Johnnies return both goaltenders who saw time in net last season. Junior Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) was left off the 2022-23 All-MIAC team despite leading the conference with a 2.15 goals-against average and was third in save percentage (.918). He started 19 games between the pipes and posted an 11-5-3 record with two shutouts and 457 saves. Thirty-four percent (14 of 41) of his goals allowed were on the penalty kill. Sophomore Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) appeared in seven games and went 2-5 with a shutout,
A member of the 2022-23 MIAC All-Playoff team, Borst ended the season second on the team with nine goals and fourth in points (9g/8a), which included three power-play goals and a pair of gamewinners. The forward was also whistled for just two minor penalties in 23 games. Decorated Defensemen A pair of decorated defensemen, senior Jack Olsen (Lakeville, Minn.) and sophomore Mason Campbell (Rosemount, Minn.), headline the Johnnies’ blue line in 2023-24. An All-MIAC pick as a sophomore in 2021-22, Olsen played 25 games last season and totaled 12 points (3g/9a), which ranked third on the team among defensemen. Campbell was named to the All-USCHO Rookie first team after
he finished fifth on the team – first among defensemen – with 16 points (6g/10a) in 25 games as a freshman. He was whistled for two penalties with a plus/minus rating of +7. Campbell tied for second in the MIAC with two game-winning goals and collected eight points (4g/4a) in league play en route to All-MIAC honors.
Campbell
SJU also returns juniors Cooper Anderson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Danny Eckerline (Orono, Minn.), and sophomores Zach Enebak (Lakeville, Minn.) and Michael Spinner (Prior Lake, Minn.). INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
Borst
Max Borst came to Saint John’s University to play hockey. Learning to surf was just an added bonus.
It happened because the senior captain and his Johnnie teammates were able to spend 11 days in Australia last May as part of the team’s latest international trip. SJU visited Sydney and Newcastle, playing three games against Australian professional teams while seeing places like the Sydney Opera House and, yes, those world-famous beaches. “That was my first time,” Borst said of his debut on a surfboard. “It was kind of cold, so we had to wear wetsuits. But it was a lot of fun getting out on the water like that.” The study-abroad experience is an important part of campus life at SJU and the College of Saint Benedict. But winter sports athletes’ seasons span both semesters, making it difficult for them to participate.
That’s why Johnnies coach Doug Schueller has made a commitment that his team will take an international trip at least once during the four years a player spends on campus. In recent years, the team has been to Japan and Germany and Northern Italy. Along the way, SJU has played some hockey. But Schueller said that’s not really what these trips are about. “It’s been nice to have the opportunity to play hockey in some of these places, but that’s not the main reason we go,” he said. “It’s more about giving our players the opportunity to experience different countries and cultures. “It’s a chance to visit places most of our guys have never been to before. And when we do our senior exit surveys, it’s always those trips

that our players cite as their most memorable experiences during their time here.” The commitment to travel extends into the season itself. Schueller also tries to schedule one trip to play out east during a player’s four-year career at SJU. This season, the Johnnies will travel to Utica, New York for the Utica Thanksgiving Showcase Nov. 24-25 at the Adirondack Bank Center. In 2019-20, the team played in the Boston Landing Tournament. “It’s good for us to get the chance to go out there and face some of the best teams in the east at our level,” Schueller said. “That’s part of what it takes to be a premiere Division III program, and that’s something we’re committed to being.” Fellow senior captain Jack Olsen said both the international and domestic trips are important when it comes to team building. “Just having the chance to spend that time together helps you get to know your teammates a lot better,” he said. “We’re a pretty close-knit group anyway, but the trips have helped make us even tighter.”

Scholarships Provide Opportunities for Miller in Saint John’s Athletics Graham Miller ’25 has embraced his passion for sports photography during his time at Saint John’s University in ways he feels wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. As a freshman, the communication major and art minor from Victoria, Minnesota worked in the athletic media relations office at the College of Saint Benedict, and last year he worked as a photographer for Saint John’s athletic media relations director Ryan Klinkner ’04. “I get the chance to see the action from the sidelines and capture moments most fans don’t get to see,” Miller said. “I love my job and I take my position seriously. I’m getting the chance to explore what I want to do. “It can be hard getting access to sporting events at bigger schools, or to find a student job on campus that would allow me to do this. I was fortunate when I came to Saint John’s that I was able to find people right away who supported me and wanted to have me on the team creating images for them.” Miller, the youngest of four siblings, said coming to Saint John’s wouldn’t

have happened if not for scholarships. He receives the Stephen Slaggie Scholarship, the Abbott Baldwin Dworschak Scholarship, the Cyril Pesek Scholarship, the Tse You Kai Scholarship, an academic achievement scholarship, an art scholarship and an alum referral scholarship. “Scholarships have been a really big help for me,” Miller said. “If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have been able to attend Saint John’s. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to receive a great, wellrounded education.”
conversations and an in-person or virtual site visit. It allows student participants to both network and explore the value of their liberal arts degree when it comes to future careers. Miller was paired with James Slagle ‘09, the director of enterprise accounts at Shift4, a financial services company. Slagle has experience in sports marketing in the athletic departments at the University of Florida, the University of Minnesota and the University of Southern California. “It’s great to have the chance to connect with an alum and learn from them,” Miller said. “They share their experience and stories about their career and you pick up skills you might not get in other places.”
Klinkner said Miller is a pleasure to work with and his skillset is rare to find in an underclassman.
Miller hopes to work in the work in the sports digital media industry after graduation.
“Graham has been impressive since day one, both in his abilities as a photographer and his professionalism,” Klinkner said. “Athletic photography typically demands a long learning process, but that was not the case with Graham. I am excited for Graham’s future and to see how he will continue to enhance Johnnie athletics over the next two years.”
He is so grateful to the donors who have helped make it possible for him to chase that dream.
Miller also took advantage of the Student Exploration through Alum Mentoring (SEAM) program where students are matched with alum mentors for informational interviews, networking
“I still remember how it felt receiving my acceptance letter in the mail. I knew at that moment that this was the right place for me, and that feeling hasn’t changed. It’s amazing to know there are so many people out there who care about making this possible. The Johnnie and Bennie network is really something remarkable.”

HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA For Jackson Sabo, it felt like a journey back in time.
supporters on hand on the other side of the glass.
The Saint John’s University forward and his teammates were playing Augsburg outdoors under the lights at Polar Lakes Park in White Bear Township as part of Hockey Day Minnesota weekend on Jan. 27, 2023.
"It's cool, but this (was) really a team win," said Sabo, who drove in and poked the puck past Augsburg goalkeeper Jack Robbel, ending the 3-on-3 overtime set up when teammate Nick Michel scored with the goaltender pulled with 1:03 left in regulation to tie the game 4-4. "Anyone of our guys could have scored that last goal. I'm just grateful to be out here with this great group of players." The game was a homecoming of sorts for SJU head coach Doug Schueller, who played on two state tournament teams before graduating from White Bear Lake High School in 1995.
And it reminded Sabo of days gone by. “(It) was so cool," he said. "It was just like when I was growing up playing hockey on the pond in my backyard. It's such a great feeling. There's nothing like it." Especially when you deliver the way Sabo did. It was his goal 2:16 into overtime that lifted SJU to a dramatic 5-4 come-frombehind victory over the Auggies in a key MIAC matchup. The goal set off fireworks above the outdoor rink as Sabo skated over to celebrate with the throng of SJU

“I think part of the reason we were considered is that Mike Schwartz, who was my head coach in high school, went on to coach at Augsburg,” Schueller said of his team’s participation. “So there's a connection between our two schools and White Bear Lake. “That helped everything line up for this to fall into place."
