SEASON PREVIEW As he enters his fifth season as the head swimming and diving coach at Saint John’s University, Ben Gill has much to be excited about. For the second year in a row, his team finished second at the MIAC Championships last season and many of those key contributors are back this time around. The Johnnies return 65 percent (363.5 of 557.5) of the individual points earned at last season’s MIAC Championships and two MIAC individual champions in 2023-24. Three-Time MIAC Champion Returns Already a two-time MIAC Diver of the Year, junior Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./ Sauk Rapids-Rice) is back in 2023-24. He won the 3-meter E. Grabinski dive (476.10) for the second-consecutive season a year ago and finished second (465.50) to his older brother Jack Grabinski ’23, in the 1-meter dive. Grabinski then went on to finish seventh in both dives at the NCAA Central Regional in Chicago. A Noble Champ Junior Liam Noble (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) led SJU with a total of five All-MIAC (top three) honors as a Noble freshman at his first conference meet in 2021-22 and bested the total by one last season. The crowning achievement of the top-three finishes was his first MIAC title with a time of 51.0 seconds flat in the 100-yard backstroke. The result came hours after he took first in the event's prelim with a school-record time of 50.77 seconds. Noble finished second in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and was on three secondplace relays. SJU's times in the 200- and 800-yard freestyle relays were program records, while the 400 missed it by 0.07 of a second.

A Powerful Class The Johnnies’ junior class doesn’t end with Grabinski and Noble. Carter Larson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) is already a five-time All-MIAC performer and broke SJU's record in the 200-yard freestyle as the first leg of the 800yard freestyle relay at the 2023 MIAC Championships. He is currently second in school history in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in both the 1,000- and 1,650yard freestyles. He set four SJU freshman records in 2021-22. Colby Kern (Delano, Minn.) was a member of SJU’s three freestyle relays that placed second last year and was in the top six in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Connor Thayer (Prior Lake, Minn.) touched the wall eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle and claimed 10th in both the 200- and 500yard freestyles. Zach Ruoff (Melrose, Minn./ Melrose Area) was 11th in the two freestyle sprints and 13th in the 200-yard version, while Langston Philion (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed ninth in the 200-yard butterfly, 12th in the 400-yard individual medley and 14th in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshmen in the SJU Record Book A trio of sophomores etched their names in the SJU record books as freshmen last season. Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./ Chaska) led the way by shattering three freshman records – the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles – and the two longdistance times also broke the program’s all-time records. The 2022-23 MIAC Men’s Co-Rookie of the Year, Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) was All-MIAC in four events at his first conference meet. He finished third in the 100-yard freestyle, fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100yard butterfly (51.22). His time in the 100 butterfly was the second-fastest by a freshman in SJU history, while the time in the 100 freestyle was fourth. Reuter also served as the Johnnies' first leg on the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, and the second on the 800-yard freestyle relay. Clay Megaw (Monticello, Minn.) recorded the second-fastest times by an SJU

freshman in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, at the MIAC Championships. His time in the 100-yard breaststroke is fifth all-time. He also served as the second leg of the second-place 200-yard medley relay. Two others, Tim Rotter (Blaine, Minn.) and Cameron Schreifels (Sartell, Minn./SartellSt. Stephen), collected points at their first conference meet. Rotter claimed eighth on both diving boards and Schreifels was in the consolation final in the 100- (14th) and 200-yard (12th) backstrokes, and 100yard butterfly (14th). Upperclassman Leadership Three seniors return to the pool for their final season as Johnnies after adding to the team’s point total last season. Alex Heer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) just missed All-MIAC honors with a fourth-place time in the 100-yard backstroke, placed seventh in the 200-yard butterfly and tied for 10th in the 100-yard butterfly. Brogan O’Donnel (Rosemount, Minn.) claimed 13th in both the 200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard individual medley and Rafael Rios (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) was 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. The 2023-24 Schedule The Johnnies open the season with fourstraight dual meets, including the first two against Macalester (Oct. 21) and Hamline (Oct. 27) in the Warner Palaestra Pool. SJU hits the road Nov. 4 to face St. Olaf and faces Wisconsin-Eau Claire Nov. 11 at St. Kate’s. Following four-consecutive road trips – Gustavus Adolphus Invitational (Nov. 18), Rochester Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 2), Luther (Iowa) Invitational (Jan. 13) and a dual at St. Cloud State (Jan. 18) – SJU hosts Carleton Jan. 20 for its home finale. Four more road trips, including two diving invitationals, await the Johnnies before the 2024 MIAC Championships on Feb. 14-17 at the University of Minnesota's Jean Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The 2024 NCAA Division III Championships are set for March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C. for the second-straight season. 2

BEN GILL Head Coach Ben Gill is in his fifth season as SJU’s head swimming and diving coach in 2023-24. He became the fourth head coach in the program’s history on Aug. 12, 2019. He also serves the SJU athletic department as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

2022-23 SEASON: SJU placed second out of six teams at the MIAC Championships for the secondstraight season in 2022-23. A trio of divers – Jack Grabinski ’23, Eli Grabinski ’25 and Connor Reed ’23 – competed at the NCAA Regional in Chicago. Jack just missed qualifying for one of the nine NCAA bids and was a first-alternate for the NCAA Championships. Eli was named MIAC Diver of the Year after he won the 3-meter dive and took second to his brother Jack on the 1-meter board at the MIAC Championships. Liam Noble ’25 was SJU’s other MIAC champion in the 100-yard backstroke.

2021-22 SEASON: The Johnnies finished second out of six teams at the 2022 MIAC Championships. Eli Grabinski ‘25 was named the MIAC Men’s Diver of the Year after he won both events, the first Johnnie to do so since John Deters ‘92 - a seven-time AllAmerican and the 1991 national champion on the 1-meter board - who accomplished

the feat three consecutive years from 1990-92. Joe Koller ‘23, like Grabinski, also won two conference titles. He became the first Johnnie to win the 100-yard backstroke since 2012 (Logan Arnold) with a school-record time of 50.88 seconds.

2020-21 SEASON: The Johnnies competed in an abbreviated schedule, though Jack Grabinski ‘23 and Connor Reed ‘23 were named College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-Americans. Grabinski received first-team honors in the 3-meter dive, while both divers earned second-team distinction on the 1-meter board. Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for the second consecutive season, the CSCAA Board once again adjusted the selection criteria for each division. Swimming selections were made on the basis of verified performances in bona-fide competition submitted by their respective coaches, while diving selections were conducted via a video evaluation of performances from the 2020-21 academic year.

2019-20 SEASON: He directed the Johnnies to a third-place finish at the 2020 MIAC Championships. Two of his divers, Jack Grabinski ‘23 and Connor Reed ‘23, competed at the NCAA Central Regional, and Grabinski became the first Johnnie diver to advance to nationals since 2011. Grabinski, however,

did not compete after the NCAA canceled all winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PAST EXPERIENCE: A 2007 graduate of St. Cloud State, Gill served as head swimming and diving coach for the men’s and women’s teams the last four seasons at Loras College (Iowa). Loras sent student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships each of the last three seasons and collected six All-America honors. The Duhawks totaled 64 All-Conference honors, including 14 conference champions. Prior to Loras, Gill was the head coach at the La Crosse (Wis.) Area Family YMCA from 2014-15. Eight of Gill’s athletes qualified for YMCA Nationals and his team placed third at the YMCA state meet, in which multiple state champions were crowned across different age groups. Gill was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater for two seasons (2012-14) and coached nine Division II All-Americans. The SCSU women won back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships during his tenure. His coaching experience also includes stops at the St. Cloud YMCA (2011-12), the Fox Cities YMCA in Appleton, Wis. (200911) and as an assistant at the College of Saint Benedict (2007-08). Gill was also a deck coach at Stanford’s swim camp during summer 2008.

A S SISTA N T COACHES KYLE GREEN ASSISTANT SWIMMING COACH Green is in his third year as assistant swimming coach at Saint John’s in 2022-23. His swimming career began in high school with a state championship for Bettendorf High School in Iowa. Green attended Division II St. Cloud State and swam from 2007-09, where he competed at the NCAA Championships in the backstroke and individual-medley events, as well as relays. He previously coached the St. Cloud YMCA swimming program in 2011-12 and at St. Cloud Technical High School in 2013-14.

ELISE MORELL DIVING COACH (SECOND SEASON) Elise (Genereux) Morell is in her third season as the Johnnies’ diving coach in 2022-23. A 2012 graduate of Saint Benedict, Morell qualified for the MIAC Championships in the 1- and 3-meter dives all four years, and finished 12th on both boards as a senior in 2012. After graduating from CSB, Morell coached the boys’ and girls’ diving squads at St. Cloud Apollo High School for seven seasons. She currently teaches math at Apollo and is working towards her master’s degree in learning design and technology from Saint Mary’s University.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Presented by Institutional Advancement

Scholarships Provide Opportunities for Miller in Saint John’s Athletics Graham Miller ’25 has embraced his passion for sports photography during his time at Saint John’s University in ways he feels wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. As a freshman, the communication major and art minor from Victoria, Minnesota worked in the athletic media relations office at the College of Saint Benedict, and last year he worked as a photographer for Saint John’s athletic media relations director Ryan Klinkner ’04. “I get the chance to see the action from the sidelines and capture moments most fans don’t get to see,” Miller said. “I love my job and I take my position seriously. I’m getting the chance to explore what I want to do. “It can be hard getting access to sporting events at bigger schools, or to find a student job on campus that would allow me to do this. I was fortunate when I came to Saint John’s that I was able to find people right away who supported me and wanted to have me on the team creating images for them.”

Miller, the youngest of four siblings, said coming to Saint John’s wouldn’t have happened if not for scholarships. He receives the Stephen Slaggie Scholarship, the Abbott Baldwin Dworschak Scholarship, the Cyril Pesek Scholarship, the Tse You Kai Scholarship, an academic achievement scholarship, an art scholarship and an alum referral scholarship. “Scholarships have been a really big help for me,” Miller said. “If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have been able to attend Saint John’s. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to receive a great, wellrounded education.” Klinkner said Miller is a pleasure to work with and his skillset is rare to find in an underclassman. “Graham has been impressive since day one, both in his abilities as a photographer and his professionalism,” Klinkner said. “Athletic photography typically demands a long learning process, but that was not the case with Graham. I am excited for Graham’s future and to see how he will continue to enhance Johnnie athletics over the next two years.”

Miller also took advantage of the Student Exploration through Alum Mentoring (SEAM) program where students are matched with alum mentors for informational interviews, networking conversations and an in-person or virtual site visit. It allows student participants to both network and explore the value of their liberal arts degree when it comes to future careers. Miller was paired with James Slagle ‘09, the director of enterprise accounts at Shift4, a financial services company. Slagle has experience in sports marketing in the athletic departments at the University of Florida, the University of Minnesota and the University of Southern California. “It’s great to have the chance to connect with an alum and learn from them,” Miller said. “They share their experience and stories about their career and you pick up skills you might not get in other places.” Miller hopes to work in the work in the sports digital media industry after graduation. He is so grateful to the donors who have helped make it possible for him to chase that dream. “I still remember how it felt receiving my acceptance letter in the mail. I knew at that moment that this was the right place for me, and that feeling hasn’t changed. It’s amazing to know there are so many people out there who care about making this possible. The Johnnie and Bennie network is really something remarkable.”

SWIMMING & DIVING IN THE SJU J-CLUB HALL OF HONOR Pat Haws (head coach, inducted 2019) - The swimming and diving coach at Saint John’s from 1973 to Haws 1998, Pat Haws built the program into an MIAC power. During his tenure, his teams placed in the top three at the conference championships in 23 of 25 seasons – including 15 runner-up finishes. There were also 11 finishes in the top 25 at the Division III national meet. In all, his swimmers earned All-American honors 40 times and won two national championships. There was also one U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier.

Matt Zelen (swimmer, inducted 2019) - Matt Zelen became just the second SJU swimmer or diver to win a national Zelen title when he won the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III national meet in 1999. But by then,

he had already had earned All-American distinction at nationals six times as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 100-yard freestyle that year, giving him a total of nine AllAmerican performances in all. That went along with 13 MIAC titles in individual events and relays as well as four other second-place finishes at the conference meet. He remains the school record holder in three events – the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Jon Deters (diver, inducted 2021) - A transfer from Iowa State at the semester break of his freshman Deters year, Jon Deters went on to qualify for the NCAA Division III national meet four-straight seasons earning All-American honors seven times. That included his junior season when he earned the program’s first national title by winning the 1-meter competition. He also won three-straight MIAC titles in both the 1 and 3-meter competitions during his time at the school.

Jon Habben (swimmer, inducted 2022) - Habben was the first Johnnie swimmer to touch Habben the wall as an MIAC champion when he won the 50-yard freestyle at the conference meet as a freshman in 1976. Two years later, he became the first SJU swimmer to touch 27 GoJohnnies.com

the wall as an All-American when he finished 10th in the same event at the 1978 NCAA Division III championships. All told, Habben won a total of eight MIAC titles and qualified for nationals four times. Tom Kubinski (swimmer, inducted 2023) - A standout at Osseo High School, Tom Kubinski went on to win Kubinski two conference titles in the 100 freestyle and three-straight in the 50 freestyle during his time at SJU. His time in the 50 at the 1983 MIAC meet – 20.90 seconds – was not only a pool and conference record, but made him the first swimmer at the Division III level to break the 21-second mark in the event. He finished sixth in the 50 at nationals this season, then eighth as both a sophomore and senior. In total, he earned All-MIAC honors on eight occasions and AllAmerican honors six times.

THE WANDERING START OF SJU SWIMMING AND DIVING give the sport up. The 1971-72 Saint John’s University swimming and diving team may have finished last at that “I got a message from (Smith) asking me to stop season’s MIAC Championship meet. But the by his office,” said Van Landschoot. “I went Johnnies – in their first season competing in over there and he introduced himself to me. He the sport – already accomplished their mission got right to the point. He talked about the Allsimply by getting into the water in the first place. Sports Trophy and how we hadn’t been able to get over the top the past couple of years. “The Warner Palaestra hadn’t been built yet,” recalls Jim Smith, the legendary former SJU “He said he knew I had a swimming basketball coach who was just beginning his background. I told him that was true, but I’d first stint as the school’s athletic director in the given the sport up and hadn’t been involved fall of 1971. in it for a long time. He told me he thought I “But we knew it was coming and the plans for it included a swimming pool. So, we wanted to start laying the groundwork for that. But the other piece was the (MIAC) All-Sports

could do it, and he convinced me to take the challenge on.” Van Landschoot posted notices around campus trying to drum up interest. 15 students were on hand when the team began practice – only two of whom had any competitive experience. Van Landschoot served as the team’s organizer and director but did not compete. Then-sophomore Steve Smith became the team’s first captain in December of 1971. “I went to a Catholic High School in Owatonna and we didn’t have a swim team,” Steve Smith said. “But I liked to swim and I’d taken Red Cross classes. So I decided to give it a shot.”

Trophy. We had been losing out to schools like Macalester and Gustavus by a point or two. We weren’t getting any points in swimming because we didn’t have a team. I figured if we could put a team together, even if they went to the conference meet and finished last, we’d still get a point out of that, which could be enough to put us over the top.” Smith began looking for any student who might have a swimming background, and who possessed the skills to organize a team on short notice. That search led him to David Van Landschoot, who was finishing his final credits at SJU in the fall of 1971. Van Landschoot was already a leader on campus. He’d been elected as freshman class president during his first year, and he’d gone on to be elected as both vice president, then president of undergraduate student government as well as serving on the school’s administration board. He was also a member of the rugby team. Perhaps even more importantly, he’d been a high school diver in Rock Island, Ill. before his family moved to Pequot Lakes, Minn. prior to his senior year in high school forcing him to

Van Landschoot was able to schedule a total of four intercollegiate meets in advance of the MIAC Championship, the first of which was a double dual against St. Cloud State and Hamline on Jan. 15, 1972. The biggest issue the team faced was finding a pool to practice in. That meant turning to area high schools, or occasionally sharing space at Halenbeck Hall with St. Cloud State. “I remember going to places like Rocori High School, which had a pool,” Van Landschoot said. “It was always at odd hours, like 8 p.m. when the high school team was done practicing. We’d truck over there in the dark in the dead of winter and jump into the water at 8 p.m and get done around 9:30 or so. Then we’d have to dry off, go back out into the cold and drive ourselves back to campus. It got to be a real grind.” The Johnnies hung in there and made a decent showing in competition. Their final meet before the conference meet was a dual at Gustavus in late February of 1972. The Gusties won 57-45, but there were several SJU highlights, with some first and third place honors.

An article mentioned, “the future of the team, however, depends on a pool on the St. John’s campus. Only then will team members be able to get in the practice time needed without being bound to the schedule of a pool owned by someone else.” While they waited for that day, they still had to compete at the MIAC meet March 2-4, 1972. There, the Johnnies finished in sixth-place in the six-team field. That still scored in the all-sports competition, which helped lift Saint John’s to first place for the 1971-72 school year, the first time since 1968-69 the Johnnies had won the award and just the second time overall. For the 1973-74 season, Warner Palaestra had opened with a swimming pool and Pat Haws had been hired as the program’s first real coach - though he did not have a competitive swimming background. Haws, though, built SJU into a conference contender, coaching until 1998. In that time, his teams placed in the top three at the MIAC Championships in 23 of 25 seasons. There were also 11 finishes in the top 25 at the Division III national meet. And his swimmers earned All-America honors 40 times and won one national diving championship. He said the groundwork that had already been laid out helped make that happen. “You don’t know how much that helped,” Haws said. “I came in as a blank slate. And those guys who were here and had a swimming background were so willing to train me. Guys like Steve Smith, Jeremy Raths and so many others. They were all so open to helping me out and patiently letting me get my feet under me. “It meant a lot to me and to the program.”
