SEASON PREVIEW
The Saint John’s swimming and diving team and fourthyear head coach Ben Gill are optimistic for the 2022-23 season. And for good reason. SJU set a program record with 731 points at the 2022 MIAC Championships, finishing second out of six teams, and the majority of those studentathletes return this season.
The Johnnies return 81 percent (455 of 561) of the individual points earned at the 2022 MIAC Championships, where SJU finished second out of six teams, as well as three MIAC individual champions. The relays shape up well for SJU too as the Johnnies return all four members from the three freestyle relays and need to replace one from each of the medleys. All five relays finished second at the conference meet last February.
DIVING STRENGTH
SJU scored 50 points in each of the two diving events last season and all three Johnnies return. The 2022 MIAC Diver of the Year, sophomore Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./ Sauk Rapids-Rice) won both conference titles in convincing fashion last year after joining SJU for spring semester and senior Connor Reed (Elk River, Minn./Spectrum) was second in both dives. Senior Christian Pfau (Williston, N.D.) totaled 26 points with a pair of sixth-place finishes on the diving board.
Grabinski and Reed advanced to the NCAA Regional at Calvin (Mich.), where Grabinski finished 10th out of 27 divers with a score of 433.60 in the 3-meter dive and 18th on the 1-meter board. Reed made his second appearance at the NCAA Regional (2020) and claimed 19th in the 3-meter dive (396.05) and 22nd in the 1-meter event (355.20).
TWO GRABINSKIS IN THE SAME POOL
SJU also returns the 2020 MIAC Co-Diver of the Year, senior Jack Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk RapidsRice), who is a two-time CSCAA All-American and Scholar All-American, and the 2020 conference champion in the 3-meter dive. He studied abroad last spring in Chile and missed the 2022 MIAC Championships, but would have had two appearances at the NCAA Division III Championships under his belt had that competition not been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BACKSTROKE CHAMP IS BACK
In the pool, SJU returns eight swimmers who combined for a total of 25 All-MIAC honors (top-three at the MIAC Championships). The MIAC’s top student-athlete in the backstroke last season, senior Joe Koller (Savage, Minn./ Shakopee) returns after winning both the 100- (50.88) and
200-yard (1:51.44) backstrokes with SJU records at the 2022 MIAC Championships. He also served as the first leg on the Johnnies’ medley relay teams. He touched the wall fourth in the 200-yard individual medley.
UPPERCLASSMAN LEADERSHIP
A pair of seniors, Beau Brinkman (three; Wayzata, Minn.) and Ethan Huber (four; Mitchell, S.D.), have combined for seven All-MIAC honors thanks to performances on SJU relays over the last two conference meets. Individually, Brinkman placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, seventh in the 100-yard backstroke and 11th in the 200-yard backstroke last year. SJU’s 2022-23 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president, Huber claimed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley, sixth in the 200-yard individual medley and seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Another upperclassman, junior Alex Heer (St. Paul, Minn./ Cretin-Derham Hall) finished seventh in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and 11th in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Tim Belov (Medina, Minn./Wayzata) tallied a pair of 14th-place finishes in the two breaststroke events.
FRESHMEN IN THE SJU RECORD BOOK
Sophomore Carter Larson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) recorded three top-eight finishes at last year’s MIAC Championships - sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle and eighth in the 200yard freestyle. He set four SJU records for a freshman. His times in the 1,000- (10:01.46) and 1,650-yard (16:35.69) freestyles are currently third-fastest in program history, while his times in the 200- (1:42.90) and 500-yard (4:43.26) freestyles are fourth.
Sophomore Liam Noble (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) led SJU with a total of five All-MIAC honors last year at his first conference meet. He joined Koller as an All-MIAC individual swimmer with a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and was on four of the five relays. He just missed All-MIAC distinction with a fourth-place time in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle. Noble’s times in the 50- (20.99) and 100-yard (46.40) freestyles are good for fifth all-time among SJU freshmen.
Sophomore Andrew East (Minneapolis, Minn./South) placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly at the conference meet, thanks to the third-fastest time by an SJU freshman (52.31), as well as 10th in the 200-yard butterfly and 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
CONTINUED SEASON PREVIEW
Sophomore Connor Thayer (Prior Lake, Minn.) touched the wall ninth in both the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles, and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2022 MIAC Championships. His time of 4:47.85 in the 500-yard freestyle was the fourth-fastest by an SJU freshman.
MORE FRESHMAN POINTS
Three other 2022-23 sophomores provided points for SJU as freshmen at the 2022 MIAC Championships. Colby Kern (Delano, Minn.) just missed All-MIAC recognition with a fourth-place time in the 50-yard freestyle and claimed seventh in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle. Zach Ruoff (Melrose, Minn./Melrose Area) finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle, 10th in the 100-yard freestyle and 12th in the 200-yard freestyle, while Langston Philion (Maple Grove, Minn.) was 11th in the 200-yard butterfly.

ASSISTANT COACHES
KYLE GREEN ASSISTANT SWIMMING COACH
Green is in his second year as assistant swimming coach at Saint John’s in 2022-23. His swimming career began in high school with a state championship for Bettendorf High School in Iowa. Green attended Division II St. Cloud State and swam from 2007-09, where he competed at the NCAA Championships in the backstroke and individual-medley events, as well as relays. He previously coached the St. Cloud YMCA swimming program in 2011-12 and at St. Cloud Technical High School in 2013-14.
ELISE MORELL DIVING COACH (SECOND SEASON)
Elise (Genereux) Morell is in her second season as the Johnnies’ diving coach in 2022-23. A 2012 graduate of Saint Benedict, Morell qualified for the MIAC Championships in the 1- and 3-meter dives all four years, and finished 12th on both boards as a senior in 2012. After graduating from CSB, Morell coached the boys’ and girls’ diving squads at St. Cloud Apollo High School for seven seasons. She currently teaches math at Apollo and is working towards her master’s degree in learning design and technology from Saint Mary’s University.
MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT BRUESS
Welcome to the Warner Palaestra Pool and Saint John’s University swimming and diving!
My name is Brian Bruess and, as of July 1, I am president of both College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University – the first time both of those titles have been held concurrently. In the short time that my wife Carol and I have been here, we have both certainly felt the engaging welcome of this community. The Benedictine hospitality lives up to its billing. Thank you to those who have reached out with greetings and well wishes.
I’m glad you’re here and hope you’re ready for some great competition. The young men out there competing for the Johnnies today have worked hard to excel in a sport they love. That means hours of training, conditioning, preparing and traveling.
Just as impressive, they’re working hard in the classroom. These are student-athletes in the best sense of both those traditions – and they uphold the academic standards for which Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s are well known.
Beyond that, these are Johnnies. As such, each is a member of this Benedictine community we hold dear.
Our students are engaged and involved with the causes and initiatives that move them. In their four years here, they will discover their opportunities to develop as active, thoughtful citizens.
That’s a lot going on. So if things get tight toward the end of a race, don’t lose faith: Johnnies are obviously great at keeping an eye on the clock.
So let’s get settled in and ready for the action. And as we cheer for today’s performances in the pool, let’s all commit to cheering a little louder in recognition of the performances we don’t see – in the classroom, in the lab and in service to their church or community
GO JOHNNIES!
BEN GILL
2021-22 SEASON:
Ben Gill is starting his fourth season as SJU’s head swimming and diving coach. He became the fourth head coach in the program’s 46-year history on Aug. 12, 2019. He also serves the SJU athletic department as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
The Johnnies second out of six teams at the 2022 MIAC Championships. Eli Grabinski ‘25 was named the MIAC Men’s Diver of the Year after he won both events, the first Johnnie to do so since John Deters ‘92 - a seven-time AllAmerican and the 1991 national champion on the 1-meter board - who accomplished the feat three consecutive years from 1990-92. Joe Koller ‘23, like Grabinski, also won two conference titles. He became the first Johnnie to win the 100-yard backstroke since 2012 (Logan Arnold) with a school-record time of 50.88 seconds.
2020-21 SEASON:
The Johnnies competed in an abbreviated schedule, though Jack Grabinski ‘23 and Connor Reed ‘23 were named College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-Americans. Grabinski received first-team honors in the 3-meter dive, while both divers earned second-team distinction on the 1-meter board. Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for the second consecutive season, the CSCAA Board once again adjusted the selection criteria for each division. Swimming
selections were made on the basis of verified performances in bona-fide competition submitted by their respective coaches, while diving selections were conducted via a video evaluation of performances from the 2020-21 academic year.
PAST EXPERIENCE:
• A 2007 graduate of St. Cloud State, Gill served as head swimming and diving coach for the men’s and women’s teams for four seasons at Loras College (Iowa). Loras sent student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships each of the last three seasons and collected six All-America honors. The Duhawks totaled 64 All-Conference honors, including 14 conference champions.
• Prior to Loras, Gill was the head coach at the La Crosse (Wis.) Area Family YMCA from 2014-15. Eight of Gill’s athletes qualified for YMCA Nationals and his team placed third at the YMCA state meet, in which multiple state champions were crowned across different age groups.
• Gill was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater for two seasons (2012-14) and coached nine Division II All-Americans. The SCSU women won back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships during his tenure.
• His coaching experience also includes stops at the St. Cloud YMCA (2011-12), the Fox Cities YMCA in Appleton, Wis. (2009-11) and as an assistant at the College of Saint Benedict (2007-08). Gill was also a deck coach at Stanford’s swim camp during summer 2008.

OF
SJU SWIMMING AND DIVING
The 1971-72 Saint John’s University swimming and diving team may have finished last at that season’s MIAC Championship meet. But the Johnnies – in their first season competing in the sport – already accomplished their mission simply by getting into the water in the first place.
“The Warner Palaestra hadn’t been built yet,” recalls Jim Smith, the legendary former SJU basketball coach who was just beginning his first stint as the school’s athletic director in the fall of 1971.
“But we knew it was coming and the plans for it included a swimming pool. So, we wanted to start laying the groundwork for that. But the other piece was the (MIAC) All-Sports Trophy. We had been losing out to schools like Macalester and Gustavus by a point or two. We weren’t getting any points in swimming because we didn’t have a team. I figured if we could put a team together, even if they went to the conference meet and finished last, we’d still get a point out of that, which could be enough to put us over the top.”
Smith began looking for any student who might have a swimming background, and who possessed the skills to organize a team on short notice. That search led him to David Van Landschoot, who was finishing his final credits at SJU in the fall of 1971.
Van Landschoot was already a leader on campus. He’d been elected as freshman class president during his first year, and he’d gone on to be elected as both vice president, then president of undergraduate student government as well as serving on the school’s administration board. He was also a member of the rugby team.
Perhaps even more importantly, he’d been a high school diver in Rock Island, Ill. before his family moved to Pequot Lakes, Minn. prior to his senior year in high school forcing him to give the sport up.
“I got a message from (Smith) asking me to stop by his office,” said Van Landschoot. “I went over there and he
introduced himself to me. He got right to the point. He talked about the All-Sports Trophy and how we hadn’t been able to get over the top the past couple of years.
“He said he knew I had a swimming background. I told him that was true, but I’d given the sport up and hadn’t been involved in it for a long time. He told me he thought I could do it, and he convinced me to take the challenge on.”
Van Landschoot posted notices around campus trying to drum up interest. 15 students were on hand when the team began practice – only two of whom had any competitive experience.
Van Landschoot served as the team’s organizer and director but did not compete. Then-sophomore Steve Smith became the team’s first captain in December of 1971.
“I went to a Catholic High School in Owatonna and we didn’t have a swim team,” Steve Smith said. “But I liked to swim and I’d taken Red Cross classes. So I decided to give it a shot.”
Van Landschoot was able to schedule a total of four intercollegiate meets in advance of the MIAC Championship, the first of which was a double dual against St. Cloud State and Hamline on Jan. 15, 1972.
The biggest issue the team faced was finding a pool to practice in. That meant turning to area high schools, or occasionally sharing space at Halenbeck Hall with St. Cloud State.
“I remember going to places like Rocori High School, which had a pool,” Van Landschoot said. “It was always at odd hours, like 8 p.m. when the high school team was done practicing. We’d truck over there in the dark in the dead of winter and jump into the water at 8 p.m and get done around 9:30 or so. Then we’d have to dry off, go back out into the cold and drive ourselves back to campus. It got to be a real grind.”
THE
START OF
SJU SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Johnnies hung in there and made a decent showing in competition. Their final meet before the conference meet was a dual at Gustavus in late February of 1972. The Gusties won 57-45, but there were several SJU highlights, with some first and third place honors.
An article mentioned, “the future of the team, however, depends on a pool on the St. John’s campus. Only then will team members be able to get in the practice time needed without being bound to the schedule of a pool owned by someone else.”
While they waited for that day, they still had to compete at the MIAC meet March 2-4, 1972. There, the Johnnies finished in sixth-place in the six-team field.
That still scored in the all-sports competition, which helped lift Saint John’s to first place for the 1971-72 school year, the first time since 1968-69 the Johnnies had won the award and just the second time overall.
For the 1973-74 season, Warner Palaestra had opened with a swimming pool and Pat Haws had been hired as the program’s first real coach - though he did not have a competitive swimming background.
Haws, though, built SJU into a conference contender, coaching until 1998. In that time, his teams placed in the top three at the MIAC Championships in 23 of 25 seasons.
SWIMMING & DIVING FACILITIES
There were also 11 finishes in the top 25 at the Division III national meet. And his swimmers earned AllAmerica honors 40 times and won one national diving championship. He said the groundwork that had already been laid out helped make that happen.
“You don’t know how much that helped,” Haws said. “I came in as a blank slate. And those guys who were here and had a swimming background were so willing to train me. Guys like Steve Smith, Jeremy Raths and so many others. They were all so open to helping me out and patiently letting me get my feet under me.
“It meant a lot to me and to the program.”
WARNER PALAESTRA POOL
The home of Johnnie aquatics lies in the Warner Palaestra Pool. The pool was built as part of the original Warner Palaestra Athletic Complex in 1973. The Warner Palaestra Pool includes a regulation sized, eight-lane, 25-yard pool, one-meter and three-meter spring boards and a five-meter platform.
The Warner Palaestra Pool is also open to club sport and general student use during the course of the academic year. Saint John's Water Polo has seen significant success in the Warner Palaestra Pool in recent years.

PRESENTS STUDENT FUND
Octavius Wilson Jr. has thrived at Saint John’s University.
Not only has the senior linebacker from Hill-Murray High School played a key role in the Johnnies’ defensive rotation, but he’s also served on the program’s leadership council and as a representative on the SJU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
This past summer, he completed an internship in the financial department at Microsoft at the company’s corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington.
But he said none of that would have been possible were it not for the assistance that scholarships provide.
“All of my tuition expenses rest with me, so scholarships were the main thing I had to consider when I was looking at school where I could continue my education,” said Wilson, an economics major who has received the Fran and Julia Ladner Family Endowed Scholarship, the Joyce and William Sexton Scholarship, the Joseph Friedrich Scholarship and a Dean’s Scholarship.
He’s also received Securian Foundation and Eddie Phillips Scholarships from the Minnesota Private College Council.
“Saint John’s was the top place when it came to offering the kind of scholarship package that made going here realistic and affordable for me,” he continued. “I’m really grateful for that because it helped make this opportunity possible.”
Wilson is not alone. In all, 98 percent of SJU students receive scholarships or financial aid. The SJU Student Fund helps make that happen by providing direct financial support to our students.
When you support the student fund, 100 percent of your gift goes directly toward student scholarships. Those who give receive recognition in the annual Honor Roll of Donors and a receipt stating their gift is tax deductible. They also gain the confidence of knowing their gift had a direct impact in allowing Wilson and so many others to experience all that SJU has to offer.
Please consider giving, either by visiting the student fund page in the SJU Alumni section of the CSB+SJU website or by calling 320-363-2591 or 1-800-653-7303.

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University form a partnership of two of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges, attracting students from 41 states and 14 countries.
STRONG INTEGRATION
The long-standing Coordinate Relationship between CSB and SJU demonstrates a history of delivering excellent outcomes through an outstanding joint academic program. Strong Integration is a natural extension and strengthening of our current relationship. It is not a merger of the two institutions; the college and university will remain two separate institutions aligned with their respective sponsoring monastic communities. Strong Integration necessitates no changes to the joint academic program, the admission of students or the separate conferring of degrees. Rather, Strong Integration will ensure that future students are educated by a thriving CSB and SJU. It will allow the college and university to continue delivering a superior liberal arts education with maximal effectiveness in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
The collaborative work of our two institutions and two founding monastic communities is a vital part of what makes the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University such beloved and special places. Our work has been guided throughout by the Benedictine Values, the institutions’ missions, and the needs of our students, and we are proud to take this historic step in our shared history.
We want to channel the best of both schools in new and exciting ways while still maintaining the individual identities of each. Strong Integration will further solidify already-deep ties while still celebrating each school as a college for women and a men’s university. With all of us working together, Bennies and Johnnies will continue writing new and limitless chapters of our shared history in the years to come.
