SCHOLARSHIP PATHWAYS

ESSAY BASED

Do you enjoy telling stories and expressing yourself through writing? While many of our scholarships require an essay, these specific essay based scholarships do not have any other criteria such as GPA, academic major, or participation in a particular Crosby Scholars Program!

COMMUNITY SERVICE BASED

Have you spent a lot of your time volunteering in and serving your community? We have several scholarships for students who have served a certain number of volunteer hours, who have spearheaded a service activity and/or recruited others, and more!

ACADEMIC BASED

While many of our academic based scholarships are also essay based, they also have a specific GPA requirement that you must meet to be eligible. These requirements range from a 2.0 to 3.5 cumulative weighted GPA.

SCHOOL BASED

These scholarships require your enrollment at either UNC-Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina A&T University, Wingate University, Wake Forest University, or an Historically Black College or University (HBCU)!

FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS

You are considered a First-Generation College Student if neither of your parents have a four-year Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university If this sounds like you, you can apply for a scholarship just for FirstGeneration College Students!

PROGRAM BASED

Are you an active member of the AAMPED Program or have you attended a week of the Right Decisions/Right Now Camp? Our program based scholarships require participation in a specific Crosby Scholars Program!

Essay Topic | Describe how willpower and determination have helped you overcome challenges you have encountered in your life. Describe how you overcame obstacles and found success.

The Kay Landry Scholarship Award |$1,000 Scholarship | Non-renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university

Demonstrate a strong commitment to serving others

Essay Topic | Describe an impactful relationship, including important life lessons you have gained as a result of this relationship, and its impact on your future.

Joyce Kohfeldt Determination Award | $1,000 scholarship | Non-renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Enroll in a two- or four- year college or university

Actively participate in community service and extracurricular activities

Mona W. Lovett Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award | $1,000 Scholarship | Non-renewable

Enroll in a two- or four-year college or university

Have created, spearheaded, or recruited others to participate in a service activity

Mona W. Lovett Outstanding Commitment to Service Award | $1,000 Scholarship | Non-renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Enroll in a two- or four-year college or university

Have completed a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service during their junior and/or senior year of high school

These 50 hours need to be verified and recorded in your Crosby Scholars Student Portal. Applicants who have not submitted community service forms totaling 50 hours may submit additional forms by the scholarship deadline to meet eligibility criteria.

The Carolyn “Mimi” Fox Education Scholarship | $1,000 Scholarship | Non-renewable

Jessica Hill Davis Memorial Scholarship | $1,200 Scholarship | Non-renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Enroll in a two-or four-year college or university in North Carolina

Preference will be given to recipients of the Crosby Scholars Executive Director’s Award, meaning they have completed the Crosby Scholars Program and all requirements every year since 6th grade without interruption or dismissal

Awarded to the Crosby Scholar senior who holds the highest cumulative weighted GPA at the end of the second semester of their senior year and who successfully completes all requirements of the Crosby Scholars Program

Cultural Awareness Scholarship | Two $250 Scholarships | Non-renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Be a junior or a senior in the Crosby Scholars Program

Attend the Piedmont Opera performance offered annually to Crosby Scholars at no cost

Please note that there is no application for this scholarship

James L. Einstein College Scholarship | $3,000 Scholarship | Renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Enroll in a two- or four-year college or university

Demonstrate participation in community service

Demonstrate financial need

Preference will be given to Crosby Scholars seniors whose parents are employees of WestRock Company and work in Forsyth County

Students must apply through the Winston-Salem Foundation at www.wsfoundation.org

Mary Katherine Dixson Scholarship | Number Awarded & Dollar Amount Vary | Potentially Renewable

To be eligible, student must:

Enroll in a two- or four-year college or university or in another post-secondary program of study

Have a disability that requires special services in order to succeed in their post-secondary education endeavors

Be able to submit documentation from an appropriate high school or college staff member stating that they receive services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 through the Exceptional Children’s Program

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Click on the title of the scholarship that you want to apply to.

Create your Submittable account.

You will only have to create an account for the first scholarship you apply for! After you have created your account, you will only need to “Sign In” for all other scholarships you apply for!

When you create your Submittable account, you must use the same email address that you use to log in to your Crosby Scholars Student Portal. Please do not use your parent or guardian’s email address!

Complete the eligibility questions.

It’s important that you answer these questions truthfully.

Not all scholarships will require that you complete an eligibility form.

Enter all required information and upload all required documents.

If you don’t yet have all of the required items for your scholarship applications, you can select “Save Draft” and come back to your application at a later time to complete it.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Please note that some scholarship applications may require other documents, such as a list of colleges and universities you have applied to and/or a list of your SAT/ACT test scores Read each scholarship description carefully to determine which documents are required

ESSAY

Your essay will follow a particular prompt specific to the scholarship you are applying to. Most will have a recommended word count. It is important that you have a well-written essay. We strongly encourage you to use the Crosby Scholars Essay Review Service!

ACTIVITIES RESUME

Your activities resume will list all of the activities you've been involved in during high school, both in and out of school. This includes sports, clubs, community service, leadership roles, honors, awards, jobs, and work experience you may have. You can create your own or use this template.

FINANCIAL AID AWARD OFFER

Your Financial Aid Award Offer is a list of all loans, scholarships, and grants being offered to you by your college or university. Your Financial Aid Award Offer is mailed to your home address, emailed to the email address on file with your college or university, and made available to you inside your college/university Student Account.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

A letter of recommendation is a letter written by an adult, typically outside of your family, that endorses you as a student based on your character, academic performance, interests, etc. Many letters are written by teachers, mentors, work supervisors, coaches, and school counselors.

ACCEPTANCE LETTER

Your Acceptance Letter is a letter notifying you of your acceptance to a particular college or university. This letter is mailed to your home address, emailed to you, or made available inside your college/university Student Account. You can also check with the Admissions Office of your college/university to request an additional copy.

FAFSA SUBMISSION SUMMARY

Your FAFSA Submission Summary contains information about your Federal Student Aid eligibility, your FAFSA form answers, school information, and next steps needed to ensure completion of your FAFSA form. The FAFSA Submission Summary is made available to you at StudentAid.gov after you and any contributor(s) have completed and signed your FAFSA form.

APPLICATION STATUSES

RECEIVED

Your scholarship application has been received!

IN-PROGRESS

Your scholarship application is being reviewed by Crosby Scholars Staff. If your application needs to be corrected, you will receive an email explaining what corrections need to be made.

Once the scholarship deadline passes, your application will be reviewed by our Scholarship Selection Committee. This can take several weeks after the deadline has passed.

WITHDRAWN

You are ineligible to be considered for the scholarship that you applied for. If you’re ineligible, you will receive a notification explaining why you are ineligible.

EDITABLE

You have one or more items in your scholarship application that needs correcting. If your application is in an “Editable” status, you will receive a notification explaining what item(s) of your application need correcting. It’s important that you regularly check your email. Once your application is moved to “Editable,” you will have 48 hours to make the appropriate corrections.

ACCEPTED

Congratulations! The Scholarship Selection Committee has completed the review process and you have been selected as a recipient.

DECLINED

The Scholarship Selection Committee has completed the review process and, unfortunately, you have not been selected as a recipient.

Wingate University Scholarship for Crosby Scholars

The Crosby Scholars Program encourages students to apply for outside scholarships for which they may be eligible. Outside scholarships count as student resources, becoming part of their overall package of financial aid. When need calculated under the federal methodology is greater than the offered financial aid package, outside scholarships are allowed to meet that difference If the offered aid package equals or meets the student’s financial need, any portion of outside scholarship aid exceeding the student’s financial need should be reported to Crosby Scholars Financial Aid Team immediately. If the addition of Crosby Scholars Scholarship funds does not improve the student’s financial aid package (by increasing gift aid received, or by reducing federal student loans or work study), then the student will retain the honor of being selected as scholarship recipient, but the funds will not be awarded. In no case may aid exceed the estimated cost of attendance.

Q: How do I know if I am a First-Generation College Student?

A: You are considered a First-Generation College Student if neither of your parents hold a fouryear Bachelor's Degree from a college or university. If you have a question about this, please email the Financial Aid Team at finaid@crosbyscholars.org.

Q: Where can I find my FAFSA Submission Summary?

A: You can access your FAFSA Submission Summary by logging in to your completed FAFSA application at www.StudentAid.gov with your FSA ID and password. Click on the Eligibility Overview tab and click Print This Page in the top right corner.

Q: Where can I find my Financial Aid Award Offer?

A: Your Financial Aid Award Offer is mailed to your home address, emailed to the email address on file with your college/university, or made available to you inside your college/university student account.

Q: What if information provided on my scholarship application changes after I have submitted my application?

A: Contact the Crosby Scholars Financial Aid Team at finaid@crosbyscholars.org to discuss your situation individually. Specific changes may impact your eligibility.

Q: How will I receive my scholarship funds?

A: All scholarships funds are sent directly to the scholar's chosen institution via check or electronic funds transfer (ACH.) The first half of funds are made available for use in the fall semester with the remaining half being made available for use in the spring semester. Please note that some scholarships may require the scholar to communicate information to the Crosby Scholars Financial Aid Team on an annual basis to receive spring semester funds.

Q: What is the difference between a renewable and a non-renewable scholarship?

A: A non-renewable scholarship is a scholarship that is awarded for one academic year. A renewable scholarship is a scholarship that can be awarded for more than one academic year. Some renewable scholarships may require certain criteria to be met to receive funds from year to year.
