Lyn Gill Lyn served on the 100th Anniversary Committee as co-chair of the event.

Joann Bruch Joann chaired the weekend long birthday event in Ocean City, MD, which celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts and the 50th Anniversary of GSCB. The event drew more than 1,200 girls and adults from across the Delmarva Peninsula and provided an opportunity to learn how Girl Scouting has changed through the decades.

Joann spent many hours with staff and the 100th Anniversary co-chairs to find the perfect venue for the event. She then dedicated countless hours determining logistics for the event and creating fun and educational activities. In her spare time, Joann leads a troop of 10 Girl Scout Seniors, making sure that they benefit from the Girl Scout program every day.

Joann is the ideal Girl Scout volunteer - continuously giving back to the community.

Her primary responsibilities were to oversee the alumnae functions, troop and service unit activities and the Girl Scout history events. She spent many hours helping create a timeline to tell history of Girl Scouts, finding ways to creatively display uniforms of the past and then working with the girls at the birthday event. As a long time member of the Archives Committee, Lyn was also instrumental in providing information and support to the Delaware History Museum for our Girl Scout exhibit. She worked with the museum curator to ensure that the exhibit was not only historically accurate, but provided hands on fun for our girls. At the end of the exhibit, Lyn was there to confirm the return of the items and place them in their proper locations – not an easy job!

Susan Karschner Susan has served as troop leader for two troops in Service

Unit 13 for over five years. During this time, she has also served as organizer, co-manager and manager for her service unit and as an outdoor trainer for council. Susan has helped plan and has chaired several events for her service unit, including cookie kick-offs and encampments, where her love and appreciation of camping and the outdoors has become evident. She wouldn’t even let a cast and crutches slow her down! Susan is eager to share her knowledge and experience with other leaders and girls and has even become archery and zipline certified so that girls can have even more experiences. Service Unit 13’s encampments have been so well attended that this year there will be two encampments – one for younger girls and one for older girls so that every girl has the opportunity to attend.

Deni Matz Deni has been the cookie manager for Service Unit 30 for the past 10

years. Deni has worked tirelessly to ensure that troops, volunteers and girls have the support and encouragement they need to have a successful Cookie Program. Through her efforts, the service unit has experienced an increase in cookie sales, which resulted in an increase in revenue for the troops and service unit. Deni is dedicated to and has been a role model for the girls and adults in her service unit.

Betsy Wenny Betsy has been a valuable member of the Archives Committee

providing support in the research and storage of items. She worked with the committee and the Delaware History Museum curator to set up the Girl Scout history display. Betsy also co-wrote “Hats Off to Girl Scouting,” the 100th Anniversary patch program, which was earned by over 1,000 girls, providing a fun but educational way to learn the history of Girl Scouting through the decades. Betsy also attended the birthday celebration in Ocean City, where she worked with girls in the exhibit area. Betsy is a true Girl Scout in every way.

She lives by the Promise and Law in every decision she makes. Her heart is always with Girl Scouting and the impact it has on the girls, as well as the volunteers.

Pam Yarborough Pam has been a member of the Archives Committee for the

past five years. She is an eager and proud supporter of our council and in keeping our history in order. Pam can be counted on to research uniforms and keep complete records of our inventory of uniforms. During the 100th Anniversary celebrations, Pam helped create the displays for both the Delaware History Museum and the Ocean City birthday event. She also participated in the birthday celebration by helping with the hands-on activities. Pam demonstrates what Girl Scouting means to her through her caring nature.

JESSiCA WILSON Jessica is a member of the Board of Directors and serves as chair of the Finance Committee. Her expertise has brought the Finance Committee to a higher level of responsiveness and responsibility. She ensures that information provided to the Board is both current and accurate. Jessica also volunteered her services in evaluating and making recommendations to the work of the 100th Anniversary Jamboree Planning Committee. In addition to her work on the Board, Jessica also stepped up as committee chair for the Northern Women of Distinction event – an event that creates exposure for Girl Scouts of Chesapeake Bay in the wider community and results in creating funding opportunities for programs within the council. Jessica’s organizational skills, management style passion, and energy motivate all of us and moves every project she is involved with in a positive direction.

MARY WARREN Mary has been an active board member for two terms. Her generosity in opening doors and facilitating meetings between Girl Scouts and the Wilmington Flower Market has broadened the Girl Scouts’ base of volunteers and donors and has resulted in donations that have benefited the entire council. Mary’s experience chairing the Wilmington Flower Market was invaluable in helping the Jamboree Planning Committee to understand and recognize the challenges in planning a very large girl event an afforded her the skills to navigate the committee to a successful conclusion. Mary has also co-chaired and chaired the Women of Distinction and was actively involved in many of the 100th Anniversary celebrations, including the birthday celebration, the gala, Best of Delaware and the Delaware History Museum exhibit. Mary can always be counted on to provide service and a helping hand to the board, girls and volunteers of our council.

AMY SCHISLER Amy has shown both leadership and dedication to scouting through her many roles over the years. She has had a positive impact on girls and volunteers, not only in her service unit, but throughout the council. In addition to serving as a troop leader and service unit manager, Amy has also volunteered her time to Summer Roundup, a volunteer resident camp which serves girls from across our council. She stepped up to the position of camp director, also a volunteer position, when the opportunity became available and has been in the position for the past six years. The effort she puts into making the camp program an exciting and novel experience for girls was evidenced by the record number of girls who registered for Summer Roundup last year. Amy has also served on the Council Advisory Board and was chair of the regional fundraising committee that helped make our new program center at Camp Todd a reality. She is the epitome of a Girl Scout – always leading by the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Thanks Badge Jen Smullen Jen served as co-chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee with a focus on the birthday celebration, service project and patch programs. Originally, Jen signed on to serve on the committee as a member, but graciously stepped in as co-chair when the position unexpectedly needed to be filled. As a result of her direction and support, more than 1,200 girls and adults had the pleasure of attending a memorable birthday celebration in Ocean City, MD and more than 1,000 girls participated in each of council’s Anniversary Patch Programs. In addition, many children living in shelters will experience the joy of a birthday party thanks to the “birthday in a box” service project. Jen gives her all to Girl Scouts and to each and every position she undertakes. She believes in the benefits of Girl Scouting, which is evident in her actions and her commitment to her troop, service unit and community.

Thanks Badge II Joan PrZYwara Joan has been a Girl Scout volunteer for more than 50 years.

While others might show signs of slowing down, Joan continues to serve and inspire another generation of Girl Scouts. Over the past several years, Joan has recorded the minutes for the Annual Meeting and has been a member of the Archive and the Women of Distinction Committees. She has also been the liaison for the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington and our representative with the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministries. As part of the Archives Committee, Joan has transformed many of the extra uniforms into garments that the girls can easily try on. These uniforms were used as part of the 100th Anniversary birthday party and provided hours of fun and nostalgia for girls and adults. She has been instrumental in cataloging and inventorying our collection of materials and was involved in the selection of items that were displayed at the Delaware History Museum exhibit. As a member of the Women of Distinction Committee, Joan chaired the committee to recognize “50 Pearls” in honor of the 50th Anniversary of our council. While this may seem like an easy task, it took many hours of research to filter through the long list of dedicated volunteers that have made a positive impact on our council. In her position as liaison between the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, Joan ensures that any girl wishing to earn her religious award has an advocate. She facilitates presentations, tracings and coordinates the Catholic Award ceremony. Joan also works diligently to ensure accurate information regarding Girl Scouts and the Catholic Church is conveyed to the parishes, parents and media. Everything that Joan does is done with one thought – serving the girls and volunteers to the best of her ability. She is our go to person – a true fountain of knowledge. We are a better council because of Joan’s contributions. She has truly exemplified and continues to exemplify the best of Girl Scouting.

Chairperson’s Award Capital One has been a major part of our Days of Caring for many years. Known as Orange Days of Giving, their program involves community support through volunteer time and financial resources. Their project involved completion landscaping at the LEED Platinum Lynn W. Williams Science and Technology Lodge. This was important to our organization because we needed this work completed to fulfill New Castle County land development criteria. Capital One purchased and installed all the landscaping, including more than 100 trees and other plants, a utility shed, fencing and equipment. They also performed overall maintenance.

With more than 80 volunteers working all day, the total amount of volunteer time adds up to 640 hours.

WMDT created a series of four television commercials to commemorate our 100 year anniversary, including filming, production and placement.

The commercials included Girl Scouts, adult volunteers, alumni and community leaders talking about the value of Girl Scouting, set in front of displays from the Delaware History Museum’s Girl Scout archive exhibit.

Individual topics included the benefits of being a Girl Scout, camp, the Girl Scout Promise and Law, and recruitment. WMDT also broadcasted the national Girl Scout Cookie program ad. The total value of this advertising was more than $100,000 and involved a significant amount of time and commitment.
