Outdoor Awards Introducing our new Outdoor Awards! How do these work? GSCB Outdoor Awards are designed to be a part of an ongoing experience. Girls can work on their awards anytime they attend a council-run summer camp. This means if they begin work on a particular award one year, but don’t quite complete it, they can come back and continue to work on it the following summer!
A picture of mom’s camp gu ide!
These awards are not intended as participation trophies. While we want to recognize camp participation (and we will with every girl receiving a fun patch for each session she attends) these awards are designed to challenge girls. Upon arrival at camp, the girl can express her desire to work on a certain award to her counselor. They’ll work on designing a plan to meet that objective, helping the girl to understand how long it may take and how much time may be required. Some awards could be earned in one session but the highest-level awards will take years of skill development. No girl is required to aim for awards; this is an entirely girl-led experience. Additional information regarding award achievement will be available closer to the start of camp. Until then, check out the Outdoor Awards below:

Price Increases and Added Value
As you can tell from our camp guide, a lot of things have changed at our camp properties from previous summers. You might be asking yourself–why all the change? The time has come to make some big changes to the types of programs we offer. An important part of this is offering a wide variety of sessions, as well as those that offer progression to girls who have been attending camp year after year. We’re trying some new things because we know that girls WANT an outdoor experience and research shows that having summer camp experiences help to make kids resilient. Having a summer camp experience, particularly one in a residential setting, helps youth develop better coping strategies for challenges, learn to build relationships with peers and trusted adults, develop a stronger sense of identity, as well as offer a sense of belonging through the culture of camp. Long-term benefits from a summer camp experience are immeasurable and we want to offer the most beneficial experience to our Girl Scouts!
Why has the price increased so much? Girl Scouts of the
Chesapeake Bay had camp fees in the past that were far below industry standards for day or resident summer camp sessions. In 2015, a week of day camp cost $170 and a week of resident camp cost $315. In comparison to national averages, the American Camp Association research has found that the average cost of one week of day camp is $304 and one week of resident camp is $690. Even with our price increases for 2016, we are still well below the national average. The truth of the matter is that our summer camps operate on a deficit every year because of the low camp fees that have been charged in the past. For our camps to continue into the future and be around for the next generation, we must break even between camp fees and camp costs. Increased prices also mean that we can begin to add value to the camp programming.
Where does that money go? It pays for recruiting qualified
staff and paying them competitive salaries so we can ensure we have the best counselors caring for your children. It pays for better, healthier, fresher food options in the dining hall. It pays for new program equipment like better bows and arrows for archery. A girl with tremendous potential as an archer is not going to develop many skills on old, broken equipment. These are just some of the examples of how “Early Bird” camp can be improved Register between January 15 and March 1. through an increase in price. In the same way “Full Pay” that paying for college $15 off when full balance is paid at time is an investment in your of registration. child’s education, paying “Full Bird” for camp is an investment Register and pay in full between in your child’s identity, January 15 and March 1 and that’s $30 off! confidence, and joy. 16 ........................................................................................................................................ My Most Memorable Summer • www.gscb.org
Ways-2-Save!
How do I register my daughter for camp? We are excited to announce GSCB’s online camp registration. Links to our reservation system Ultra Camp can be found by visiting www.gscb.org on January 15, 2016. Should I register my daughter for the grade level she has just completed or the grade she is entering? Register for the grade she is entering in Fall 2016. Is a deposit required for camp? Yes, GSCB requires a $35 deposit for each session the girl is registering for. This amount is applied to the total cost of the camp session. “Cookie Bucks” (earned by a troop through the Girl Scout Cookie Program) cannot be used for the deposit. If you are requesting a campership to help cover the cost and are unable to pay the $35 deposit, please provide a written explanation. For camps less than $35, please see the online registration forms for deposit amounts. Deposits are refundable for cancellations prior to March 15. After that date, GSCB will retain the $35 deposit in the event of cancellation for any reason.
Do you offer financial assistance to help pay for camp? Need-based camperships are available for
one session per summer to those girls demonstrating need. The Campership Application must be completed with other registration materials. Notification regarding financial assistance will be sent via email in April of 2016.
Is my girl ready for camp? Many factors play a role in deciding when is the right time for a girl to begin camp; whether it’s a day camp, three-day session, or a full week. Although age is one factor in camp readiness, a child’s maturity level and personality can be more important indicators. Talk to your child before registering her. If she is enthusiastic about attending, she will enjoy camp. The following questions can also be a guide in determining your girl’s readiness for resident camp: • Has your girl ever been away from home for more than one night without family members? • Will she feel comfortable sleeping in living quarters separate from her counselors? • Can she take care of her own personal hygiene without assistance? • Can she keep up with her personal belongings? • Can she cope with unfamiliar people, new places and group schedules? • Does she enjoy making new friends? • Does she like group situations? • Does she enjoy being outdoors? Can she see mosquitoes, bugs, or other “nature” friends without being frightened?
Am I ready for my girl to attend resident camp? It isn’t just the girl who needs to be ready to attend
camp; you as her parent or guardian will also need to feel prepared for the experience. In an age of constant communication, it can feel disconcerting when you are not able to connect with your girl for days at a time. Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine your preparedness to have a girl away at resident camp: • Can you relax and enjoy yourself when your girl sleeps overnight away from home? • Are you prepared to be away from your girl for several days without speaking on the phone? • Are you willing to have your girl participate in camp kapers (chores) such as setting the table, cleaning her living quarters, sweeping, picking up trash and cleaning the bathroom? • Are you confident in your girl’s ability to take care of herself, make her own bed and keep track of her belongings? • Do you believe that camp provides girls with a fun and rewarding experience that builds self-worth and independence? • Are you willing to trust the camp staff with the care of your girl?
My Most Memorable Summer • www.gscb.org ......................................................................................................................................... 17
Can camp accommodate my daughter’s dietary needs? If your girl has special dietary needs, contact the appropriate Camp Director at least two weeks prior to her arrival at camp. You can discuss the nature of your camper’s needs and gather additional information to determine if the camp can provide the appropriate support and accommodation for your camper. Can my daughter attend camp if she has a chronic medical condition? We handle each situation on a caseby-case basis. If a camper has a special medical condition, it is the policy of GSCB to work with the parent to help us determine what the appropriate accommodations might be, keeping the girl’s health and safety as the priority. How will my daughter receive her medication at camp? Medications need to be in original containers, prescribed specifically for the camper and must not be expired (or expire) while at camp. The camp will assist campers who need regular medication on a set schedule. Campers that occasionally need over-the-counter medication for headaches, allergies, or lactose intolerance must be able to communicate to staff that they need this medication or it will not be given to them. The camp carries select over-the-counter medication that parents may authorize the camp to administer on the health form. Medications will not be dispensed in any manner other than what is specified on the label, without written instructions from a physician. What if it is hot outside? We still have a great time at camp even when it’s hot outside! We encourage the girls to drink plenty of water and refill their water bottles with cold water, regularly. We have designated locations at each camp with air conditioning where we can do certain activities in the event of severe or prolonged heat. Although girls may spend some time in air-conditioning, a majority of their camp time is spent outside. How do you handle inclement weather? All GSCB summer camps have emergency weather procedures in place. We reserve the right to alter scheduled activities due to weather conditions. Alternative options will be offered to replace an activity cancelled due to weather. No refunds or adjustments in fees will be made as a result of weather-related changes.
Y BFFs Y
What if my camper is homesick? Can she come home? Please include your girl in the decision-making process so she is aware of the length of stay. Do not promise her she can come home early if she does not like camp in the first couple of days. Experiencing some feelings of homesickness is totally normal; in fact, research shows that 96% of kids experience some degree of homesickness at some point during their time at camp. Less than 10% of campers, however, experience homesickness that is so severe where an early return home becomes necessary. You can help set your girl up for success by explaining to her that she might feel homesick at camp and discuss some coping strategies like journaling, talking to a friend or counselor, or keeping busy with games and crafts. (See pg. 21!) We will work with your camper to help her adjust. If homesickness persists, the Camp Director will call to inform you of the situation and work to develop a plan of action. Does my camper require a physical? GSCB no longer requires a physical for a girl to attend camp. All girls must have Health History forms and immunization records completed on Ultra Camp by June 1.
18 ......................................................................................................................................... My Most Memorable Summer • www.gscb.org
What electronic devices are permitted at camp? No electronic devices are permitted at camp. Electronic devices can be easily lost or damaged in the camp environment. Cell phones, computers, iPods, screens, tablets, e-readers, etc. are not permitted at camp for any reason. If an electronic or technology device is brought to camp, it will be immediately taken by staff and returned the day the camper departs camp. Digital cameras are not prohibited, but not recommended. The camp, staff members and Girl Scouts are not liable for the loss, theft, or damage to any electronic device brought to camp in noncompliance with camp policy, including digital cameras. How do you handle behavioral problems at camp? All girls are expected to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law while at camp. The Camp Director and staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, GSCB reserves the right to send home from camp any girl who consistently exhibits unsuitable behavior or endangers the camp community, or whose actions towards others are unacceptable. This includes, but is not limited to; physical violence, excessive profanity, disrespectful behavior, or bullying. In this case, the girl’s parents/guardians are responsible for picking her up. In the event that a girl is sent home for behavioral problems, there will be no refund for camp fees or travel costs. Can I visit my daughter at camp? No visitors are permitted at camp. Unless a session is specifically advertised as a family session or prior approval has been given from GSCB for volunteer hours, parents should not expect to be able to remain with children or visit at any time during the session. This policy is designed with the best interest of the campers in mind as having parents around can serve as a distraction and prohibit your girl and her peers from fully engaging in their experience, developing independence, or exacerbating homesickness. Ask an adult to help you cut out #flatjuliette to take with you to camp! We can’t wait to see what activities she’ll get into this summer! If you glue her onto a piece of cardstock or posterboard before you cut her out, it will make her more sturdy.
