Council Program Guide 2011-2012
This calendar year marks two historic milestones in Girl Scouting. It is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts of the United States and the 50th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay. To celebrate the remarkable alignment of these two landmark events, GSCB has developed exciting new programs and activities for the next 16 months. Throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, GSCB will be engaging Girl Scout alumnae in joyful reunion luncheons, celebrating the spirit of our girls today with innovative leadership opportunities, rounding up Girl Scout supporters everywhere for our Grand Gala and 100th Anniversary Jamboree, and much more. In our ongoing efforts to protect the environment and conserve resources, we are distributing our 2011-2012 Council Program Guide largely electronically.
Our shift to “green” distribution will help us to save dozens of trees, reduce pollution and costs, and increase convenience for our girls, Volunteers and friends. We’ll also be distributing exciting new program and informational updates electronically throughout the coming year. This basic Council Program Guide provides core information on currently planned activities, but be sure to check our website and your inbox regularly for new additions. Please take a moment now to look through our exciting Council Program Guide. Sign up for as many programs as you wish. Do something different this year. Volunteer. Go ziplining. Connect with leaders and envision a new future. Honor the generations of the past 100 years and shape the way for the Girl Scouts of the future. Take action with us to make the world a better place. Yours in Girl Scouting,
Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

How To Use This Program Guide The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay’s 20112012 Council Program Guide contains exciting new activities and tools to help you create a year of fun, friendship and learning for memories to last a lifetime.
Is there a wall or desk calendar?
Calendar pages will be available for download for your convenience on our Council website, www.gscb.org. Check our website often, for new programs and updates, and watch for email updates too.
In 2012, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States and the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay! We invite you to join us for this momentous year. See page 43 for special activities celebrating these historic Girl Scout milestones and be sure to visit our website for new program listings throughout the year. This year’s Council Program Guide has been redesigned to make it easier to find age-appropriate programs and information for Girl Scouts, non-Girl Scouts and adults interested in volunteering. Browse through our exciting programs in the pages that follow, and learn about services and products from supporting advertisers.
How are programs organized? The booklet starts with programs for Daisies. Next are sections featuring activities for Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors. Girl Scouts will recognize the familiar Girl Scout-level colors and uniforms introducing each section, while non-Girl Scouts will relate to the school grade levels. Some programs require girls to be enrolled in Scouting or might have other prerequisites. Please read the program descriptions carefully. Beginning on page 29, a host of Teen Leadership Opportunities are presented. All girls can take advantage of the exciting Teen Leadership Weekend at Camp Grove Point in October 2011! Non-Girl Scouts are simply required to pay the additional $12 membership fee. See page 31 for details and registration information. Adult and Volunteer Programs are found on pages 33 to 38, followed by fun and enriching programs in Programs for All Ages.
How do I register?
You can find everything you need to know about registering for programs, including the Event Registration Form, on page 45. Details on our four camps, including information on how to rent these beautiful, well-equipped sites, are outlined on pages 46 and 47.

Patch Programs
Religious Recognitions
Religious recognitions are developed and administered by each of the major religious groups. Through Girl Scouting, each girl is encouraged to become a stronger member of her own religion. Girls who choose to participate in one of these programs do so outside the regular group meetings with a group of girls guided by a spiritual counselor or with their own families. For more information please visit www.praypub.org or call 800-933-7729.
Adult/Girl Ratios
A minimum of two adults must accompany every Troop to an event, unless otherwise noted in the event description. Please consult the Volunteer Essentials for exact ratio information. Individually registered girls must be accompanied by one adult. When a program specifies that adult attendance is not required, a medical release form and parent permission slips must be provided to the Program Leader. Our primary goal is to provide quality programming to girls. As a result there may not be space available above the adult-to-girl ratios.
Siblings and Friends Female siblings and friends are welcome to join us if they meet the grade requirements of the program. If they are not registered Girl Scouts, they will simply need to pay a $12 fee in addition to the event cost. Please do not bring children who are not within the grade requirement unless noted in the event description. Boys are welcome to attend events only if specifically noted. If you are an adult Volunteer willing to help staff an event, you and your Scout may be eligible to attend free of charge. For more information on this option, please contact the Newark Resource Center and request information regarding Volunteer Event Crew. Visit www.gscb.org for more information and additional forms.

GIRL SCOUT HIGHEST AWARD REQUIREMENTS Girl Scout Bronze Award
To get started, Girl Scout Juniors are required to do one grade-level Journey and earn the awards from that Journey. Once the Journey is completed, the girls may choose to attend a Girl Scout Bronze Award Educational Workshop. This workshop is not mandatory but may be useful in preparing to work in teams as they move forward in earning their Girl Scout Bronze Award. The Final Report is to be completed by each individual Girl Scout reporting on her experience and is due to Council by March 1, 2012, in order to be processed for year-end recognitions. Guidelines for Girl Scout Juniors and Adult Guidelines are available on GSCB’s website, www.gscb.org. NOTE: A schedule of educational workshops can be found on page 15.
Girl Scout Silver Award
The first requirement for Girl Scout Cadettes is to complete one gradelevel Journey and earn the awards from that Journey. During the process of working on the Journey, the girls must attend a mandatory Girl Scout Silver Award Educational Workshop. We encourage any adult who will be mentoring the girls through this process to attend as well. The Final Report is to be completed by each individual Girl Scout reporting on her experience and is due to Council by March 1, 2012, in order to be processed for year-end recognitions. Guidelines for Girl Scout Cadettes and Adult Guidelines are available on GSCB’s website, www.gscb.org. NOTE: A schedule of educational workshops can be found on page 19.
Girl Scout Gold Award
Girl Scout Senior and Ambassadors are required to do two grade-level Journeys. If they have earned their Girl Scout Silver Award, only one grade-level Journey is to be completed. During the process of working on the Journey(s), the girls must attend a mandatory Girl Scout Gold Award Educational Workshop. This workshop is mandatory for any girl who will be working on her Girl Scout Gold Award. Any adult who will be mentoring the girls through this process is encouraged to attend as well. Final Reports are to be completed by each Girl Scout reporting on her experience and are due to Council by March 1, 2012, in order to be processed for year-end recognitions. Guidelines for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors and Adult Guidelines are available on GSCB’s website, www.gscb.org. NOTE: A schedule of educational workshops can be found on page 23.
NOTE FOR ALL: All final reports for the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards need to be submitted to Council by March 1, 2012. Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Family Partnership Campaign 2012 Who knows better than Girl Scout families the difference that Girl Scouting makes in the lives of girls? Girl Scouting opens doors, creates new opportunities and helps girls develop confidence, character and life skills. Family involvement in Girl Scouting, both personal and financial, is essential to support both the Troop and the Council. A financial contribution to the Family Partnership Campaign is over and above your generous gifts of time and talent. It is monetary support for continued growth of a quality program, which we all believe helps make our girls courageous and strong. As the Girl Scouts of the USA celebrates our national 100th Anniversary and Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay celebrates our 50th Anniversary please consider investing in the future of Girl Scouts. Every donation makes a difference in the lives of girls today and tomorrow as we pave the way for future generations of female leaders. All funds received through the Family Partnership Campaign 2012 will be designated to the Capital Campaign to create new service centers that will better serve our girls and volunteers. With your generous support, Girl Scouting is preparing the next generation to face the world with courage, confidence and character.

2012: The Year of the Girl
2012: 50 Years of Girl Scouting on the Delmarva Peninsula
Happy 50th Anniversary Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay! 42
On March 12, 1912, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, GA, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid. Within a few years, Daisy’s dream for a girlcentered organization was realized. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of over 3.4 million girls and adults, a significant growth from its modest beginnings nearly a century ago. In fact, more than 50 million women in the United States today are Girl Scout alumnae. In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA will mark 100 years of inspiring girls and young women with the ideals of courage, confidence and character. This milestone provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions the organization has made over the past century, and also to rally support for the next 100 years of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay will be celebrating this special occasion from August 2011–October 2012 through a variety of girl, Troop, Service Unit and Councilsponsored events. See page 43 for a list of fun activities. Be a part of history and join the Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Celebration!
